15/12/2023-Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set are of: 1. Sky around sunrise this morning. 2. View on my lunch time walk at Lakeside. 3 and 8. Some Long-tailed Tits, part of a group it was joyful to see flitting around a tree in the southern fenced off area, I got some of my greatest views of these often secretive birds really as I felt immersed in them seeing them fly around and come close to each other and get some of my closest ever views of some. Their calls sound like jingling bells and they resemble baubles hanging in the trees especially when upside down. 4. A smart Moorhen seen at Lakeside. 5, 6 and 7. A smashing scarlet sunset which I enjoyed this evening. 9. My first candlesnuff fungi of the year, an eyecatching and fascinating silver fungi which I was pleased to see. I funnily enough thought I saw some earlier in the walk when I was walking quite fast and didn't properly check it out but then beside Concorde lake as I checked out three dashing male Tufted Ducks swimming along I enjoyed seeing this fungi that I first learnt last year too. 10. A gorgeous Redwing in a tree, it was delightful to cherish sightings of these in the eastern meadows.
At Lakeside it was also so good to see Jay, Magpie, big Carrion Crows, minute Goldcrest and Wren dashing around in the eastern meadows, gorgeous Goldfinch, Blackbird, Woodpigeon, Coot, Great Crested Grebe nice water birds seen alongside the captivating four Tufted Ducks with the female around too and a nice Herring Gull with moments of being serenaded by Song Thrush and Robin and Blue Tit heard which was lovely. Ivy, rose hips, apples, moss, lichen, shelf fungi and old man's beard hugging a line of vegetation were other highlights on the walk with Starling seen nicely at home and dandelions on the green out the front.

Xerneas and Yveltal are Fungi: Let Me Explain...
Source: Bulbapedia, Wikipedia, Bulbapedia, Enchanted Nature
Xerneas and Yveltal are my favorite legendary designs. There's something weirdly alien about these bio-luminescent approximations of fauna, like they're trying to look like animals and failing. I've always thought they looked a little bit...fungal.
Xerneas and Yveltal are like batteries. They're life energy brokers; Xerneas distributes life, while Yveltal drains it. Supporting and draining life is one of the main characteristics of fungi. In fact, it's like their whole thing.
Some fungi have a mutualistic relationship with their hosts, where they actually benefit their health. And in general, fungi are essential to supporting the ecosystem. Then there's fungi that are simply parasitic.
Fungi can also go dormant, as well as their spores. Staying still is their thing, just chilling in dark places. Xerneas and Yveltal's dormant forms are especially weird, showing just how anomalous these creatures are.
Now allow me to lichen fauna to fungi.
Sources: Bulbapedia, New Forest Pics, Wikipedia, Mushroom Diary Blog
This is xylaria hypoxylon, also known as Stag's Horn fungus. (Not to be confused with Yellow Staghorn.) It reminds me a lot of the dormant form of Xerneas, or the "deactivated" form it takes in the PC.
Stag's Horn is also bio-luminscent, which means the tips of the fungus faintly glow - much like the tips of Xerneas's antlers.
Speaking of the first legendary Fairy Pokemon, mushrooms are often associated with fairies. Fairy Rings are circles of mushrooms that are connected by mycelium underneath. (I'll get into mycelium in just a second.) There are too many myths about Fairy Rings to get into here, so for now I'll just point out the Fairy Ring around Valerie's Gym in Laverre City.
Sources: Bulbapedia, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Enchanted Nature, UK Wildlife
I'm not sure whether Bulbapedia or Dr. King on Pokemon Amino first likened Yveltal to Devil's Fingers, but the similarities are uncanny. Like Yveltal emerges from its cocoon, Devil's Fingers emerge from what is called their "egg stage". I tried to find the least unsettling picture of this that I could. Enjoy...?
I mean, what kind of bird turns into a cocoon, anyway? Honestly though, fungus isn't supposed to hatch from an egg either, so this is all mixed up.
Okay, so Xerneas and Yveltal are based on different aspects of Yggdrasil. But if you were going to design Pokemon based on Yggdrasil, the World Tree that connects the universe, wouldn't you base it on fungi rather than an actual tree? Mycelium can actually partner with the roots of plants and other fungus to create a widespread beneficial mycorrhizal network, a truly interconnected ecosystem of organisms.
Source: BBC News - How Trees Secretly Talk to Each Other
And that's why Xerneas and Yveltal are fungi. Or it could be part of their inspiration, at least. They're not necessarily inspired by these specific fungi, but I think the concept may be part of their design. Either way, Gen VI is especially fun to research!

Xylaria hypoxylon by Beat Buetikofer Via Flickr: These are very common these days. But they look rather inconspicuous and only reveal their charms when you look at them up close. Die sind aktuell sehr häufig zu finden. Sehen aber eher unscheinbar aus und offenbaren ihre Reize erst wenn man sie aus der Nähe betrachtet. Stack with 28 single shots.

Xylaria hypoxylon or candlestick fungus, candlesnuff fungus, carbon antlers or stag´s horn fungus, it´s bioluminiscent! Even where everything seems hopeless and dead, there is life. (Geweihförmige Holzkeule)
Small velvet shank mushrooms growing on a tree. Edible mushroom, also cultivatet in Japan as Enoki. Typically found during winter. Gemeiner Samtfußrübling.

Candlesnuff | Bleeding Tooth | Parasitic Cordyceps
The last three mushrooms of Funguary 2022. Candlesnuff is my favorite of the set because of how much it reminds me of antlers. There’s also a lot of slight color variation in reference photos of it, so it was fun to work with. I’m most proud of the Bleeding Tooth tho: making the red parts look goopy and glossy was an interesting challenge.

Today is the last day of spooky mushrooms for #Funguary , so we’re finishing strong with Candlesnuff fungus! Tomorrow will be the beginning of a new weekly theme: colourful fungi!!
When I heard the name of these fungi, I immediately decided I’d have to incorporate an actual candle snuffer into my drawing somehow! (I suppose I also could’ve gone with a more animalistic design, considering how much these fungi look like antlers, but where’s the challenge in that? 😂)
I also happen to love old-fashioned nightgowns, like the one I drew this girl in; they can be either really romantic or really creepy, depending on the vibe you’re going for, so that worked perfectly with the candle theme. The result: my ghostly Candlesnuff girl!

19th November 2022: Denny Wood, New Forest
I had a great time here this afternoon, a day with a more typical temperature for the time of year again where steamy breath was visible. I was delighted to see some eyelash fungi on the bare wood of a fallen tree that my Mum had seen here in the week. It was waxy, precious and delicate, distinctive, well coloured in red and black and a charming sight. I’ve seen them three years running here now which is great and it always amazes me how small they are. I took the third picture in this photoset of them. Another gem in my best ever autumn and year of observing fungi which I am really enjoying. This log was brimming with interesting things, bits of moss and some other fungi including some candlesnuff fungi as shown in the fourth picture in this photoset another mysterious little one which was new to me today and was memorable to see. I also saw turkey tail and some other great little and large mushrooms on the walk this afternoon. I took the seventh picture in this photoset of some big bits of white shelf fungi clinging to a log which stood out today and was nice to see. Lichen, thistle leaves and others and hardy daisies were lovely to see this afternoon too. Pine cones, sticks and fallen leaves scattered across the grass concentrated in one area was a nice autumnal image which I took a photo of and tweeted on Dans_Pictures tonight.
It was brilliant to observe and feed the woodland birds at the car park gathering here as they do through the winter, allowing for such intimate views. Busy Blue Tits, gorgeous Great Tits and marvellous Marsh Tits which I got especially strong intimate moments with today all came down to feed, with another exciting glimpse of a Nuthatch here lately I photographed that and am enjoying a good run of seeing them in the autumn with sightings at Blashford Lakes and Lakeside too getting photos on all but the Lakeside one, Dunnock one I’ve had a good week for seeing one in the garden on Thursday too, Coal Tit and Robin coming down too, with Chaffinch enjoyed nearby. It was really good to connect with the Marsh Tits especially but all of the birds, hearing the flickering beat of their wings and that being a dominant sound and pure main focus for those few minutes was mindful. I took the eighth and ninth pictures in this photoset of Marsh Tits. Elsewhere on the walk we got a smashing view of an eye catching Redwing.
Roe Deer was nice to see too as well as Grey Squirrel heard and seen whilst out here today. I took the fifth picture in this photoset of our dog Missy on the walk, two days before her fourteenth birthday.
There were some beautiful views of the rich woods gripped by autumnal colour, soft sun illuminating the woods I saw a lot of sun through tree scenes today and pretty sky scenes. I took the first, second and sixth looking over the heath pictures in this photoset of views here today.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: One of my favourite mammals the Roe Deer, Redwing, Robin, Dunnock, Nuthatch, Chaffinch, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Marsh Tit, Starlings seen nicely on a bare tree, possibly one of my favourite birds the Jay seen quickly flying through trees and Grey Squirrel.
Seeing garden birds House Sparrow, Blue Tit again, Goldfinch and Starling really well feeding on the balcony and beautiful autumnal colour in the beautiful sun as I was unusually downstairs in the morning/early afternoon as my Uncle visited today were highlights at home today. I took the tenth and final picture in this photoset of a view out the back with the golden birches behind the buildings looking nice again. We’ve certainly been thrust into a time where bare branches are starting to dominate with some striking red bare branches I enjoyed today and it’s amazing how quickly some trees have become quite bare. I also enjoyed a quick moving spider in and out of a crack in the hallway tonight. I really liked seeing a large Grey Heron flying as we passed the lovely Lower Test on the way home tonight it’s always enjoyable seeing things going past here.

Fieldwork Safety Brocure
...heh, safety.
Welcome to @cordycepstion, home of a Dottore Segment- Designation: Ignoto- as written by Kes (they/them, 18+).
Rules:
Due to themes that will likely be present on this blog, please be 18+ before following.
Ignoto has a power that can affect those around him. While I'll avoid borderline godmod-ish mind control unless discussed with you, he is a biohazard to be around. Consider this a mutual "no godmodding but they can hurt eachother if a scenario goes that direction" statement.
If you have any questions or doubts Ever, please feel free to talk to me!! I know it's easier said than done, but I promise even if I take a minute to reply I'm not ignoring you and do genuinely want you to have a good time.
No hate speech will be tolerated on this blog. This blog does not consider "queer" a slur, and is queer themself.
Warnings:
Themes present will likely include-
Parasitism
So much fungi
Death (animal and human)
Unethical experimentation
Body horror/gore
Bioweaponry/biological defenses
Kidnapping
Improper lab safety
NSFW (adult characters only)
(Character details below cut!)
Designation: Ignoto
Species: Human Adjacent (supports a fungi colony, clone)
Most frequented/Home nation: Sumeru, northwestern region.
Affiliations: Dottore Collective, Fatui, Fungal Entity Population
Mission/Speciality: Bioweaponry development, mycology, and mycelial information network research
Notable Physiology and Abilities:
Broad spectrum biologically produced toxin resistance. (Not immunity)
Fungal bodies growing on clothes and body. Most growths resemble candlesnuff/staghorn fungi, but others may resemble flat lichens or shelf fungi.
Increased caloric requirements.
Capable of releasing spores at will that can have a variety of effects on those who inhale them, including: mild allergies, sense of unease or impending doom, minor hallucinations, and hormonal responses. Each effect must be carefully and often intentfully cultivated before release, and so only one effect is likely to be present at a time.
Sharklike teeth typical of Segments.
Holder of one Dendro Delusion to aid in his research. Will cause a surge in spore production and entering into a transformation state.
Rudimentary communication capabilities with the sentient fungi population of Sumeru.
Weaknesses:
Antifungal substances. (He'll hiss at you if you chase him with lavender oil)
Pyro.
Removing the visible parts of the fungal network in his body means he'll need more energy/food and time to regrow before more spores can be released.
Personality:
Ignoto is dissecting you with his eyes long before you're ever in a lab, you're being studied the moment you're close enough for him to be aware of you. The occasionally used thousand-yard stare hides how he hears everything around him, devouring information and readying himself for pursuit, avoidance, or possible confrontation. His studies come first- supporting his integrated fungal colonies is an important second. Supporting the colonies and having fun often intersect. He's a Dottore Segment absolutely, but he's also a living mushroom farm with an alarming sense of humor one might expect.
..though he does have a weakness for a good pun.
