joel did not do well like this, he did not do well at life in this .. form. being almost helpless, being almost a burden - with nothing left to give to the community that housed him. he felt all eyes on him whenever he left the house, the incident written all too clearly in scars on joel’s skin. he’d been growing out his hair again to cover up much of it, but hair took its time these days - or it always had, really. 

life would never be the same for him, but at least the kids ( & tommy ) had made it back in once piece. shimmer would be forever missed, but it could’ve gone much worse. today though, loss was set aside as joel meandered away from the safety of his own four walls. the limp all too obvious before he maneuvered his body on a bench. he wasn’t even halfway to breakfast yet. short break, soft sigh, but joel had never been one to give up - no matter the hardship that lay ahead. almost panting, joel collapsed on a bench just outside the building he’d set as his target location, but the voices inside reminded him it would be crowded, he’d have to stand & wait. 

unless.. lucky day.

“jesse, wait - hold on. you mind fetchin’ me breakfast from inside? seth’s makin’ a mean turkey sandwich...” please.

             ❛ hey, so... ❜ ellie trails off, trying to fill the silence while the two of them search one of the abandoned buildings of seattle. it’s still kind of awkward that her girlfriend is pregnant with his child, but she has no doubt that jesse is going to be a great dad to the baby when it arrives & she’s glad that there’s no hard feelings between them about it. for now, though, they need to work on getting abby finding tommy so they can return home and keep dina and the baby safe. ❛ got any names for when the baby comes? ❜

          ❝  having second thoughts? pfft, baby,  ❞ she goated with a scoff, staring at the obstacle before them: a tall rusted chain link fence, far past the area that they were allowed to explore. especially this late at night. joel would be furious... not that she was planning for him to ever find out.  ❝  you can always turn back around. it’s getting past your bedtime.  ❞ mockingly, she sucked on the tip of her thumb, in what she felt was the perfect representation of an infant.

          ❝  anyway, speak for yourself,  ❞    she told him with misplaced confidence, her expression full of mischief as she grinned in his direction,  ❝  i know exactly what i’m doing...  ❞

          as if to make a point, she squeezed herself through the hole she’d cut into the fence, careful not to catch on the rough edges. when she was on the other side, she put a hand over one of her eyes and pretended the other was a hook as she took on a horrible pirate ‘accent’, ❝  i be huntin’ fer buried treasure, me hearty! are you with me, or do ye be a lilly-livered-landlubber?   ❞

she says it through a throat full of tears, but it’s no less genuine. it’s just that the wound of talia’s death still feels fresh, worsened by the fact that they had almost made it to jackson together. dina can’t help but dwell on how different her life would be if they had.

she wouldn’t be living alone, for one thing, in a small house converted to apartment she shares with another girl who’s got no family, though a few years older and a bit more prickly. she’s thankful for jesse, who sneaks out past curfew to see her. and even though they’ve been skirting around the subject of them, what they are to each other, for a few weeks now, dina is glad he’s brave enough to stay.

she settles against his side, eventually slipping into an embrace so she can rest her head against his broad chest. so little in her life seems certain, even with the stability that jackson offers. it’s no less turbulent to try to find her place here. but then there’s jesse; strong and sweet, solid ground to help her stand. even the timbre of his voice is comforting and dina doesn’t want to even try to imagine where she’d be without him.

“ you’re kind of the best. you know that, right? “

Hands can do so much, they’re extremely versatile much like yourself. They can nourish, they can pray, they can comfort. But we both know that’s not what you use yours for is it?                     WHAT’S YOUR UNDERLYING MOTIF?

the dog.

whether it’s the way you bare your teeth when backed in a corner, your loyalty, or your tendency to act on instinct, your reoccurring theme is the dog. like mitski said “i get mean when im nervous, like a bad dog” or how halsey said “i won’t smile but i’ll show you my teeth” even when migos said “dance with my dogs in the night time” the essence of the dog runs through you. you’re tough and a quick draw on the outside, but if we got down to it we’d see you’re acting the only way you’ve ever known how. it doesn’t make you bad, survival is natural, your loyalty and determination is commendable. i don’t blame you for the way you act when your back is against a wall, but please remember to not bite the hand that feeds.
