I've never seen yugioh what's it about

hello fellow canadian!

thank you for asking and i'm so happy to answer, but this question is a bit loaded so i hope you don't mind a long (possibly inaccurate) answer lol

the base of the plot of yugioh is that thousands of years ago, the kingdom of Egypt was under a terrible threat. in order to vanquish that threat, the kingdom turned to incredibly dark magic--essentially human sacrifice--and created seven "Millennium Items"; one of them being the Millennium Puzzle, which is the one you see the main character, Yugi, wearing all the time. the creation of these items brought upon the ability to play "Shadow Games" which can be played in any format (chess, card games, etc.) but with the twist that the true nature of your soul would be shown. so if you are a person who cheats all the time or you're greedy, those negative traits would be enhanced to the point where you couldn't control them, and the loser would either lose their soul or have those negative traits "crushed", leaving them to experience a severe psychotic break where the only way to recover would be to pick up the fragments of your own shattered mind. for obvious reasons, this dark magic got out of hand and was locked away by "The Great Pharaoh"--or "The Nameless Pharaoh" as he's also called. switching to the present, the main character, Yugi, manages to solve the Millennium Puzzle and accidentally releases this dark magic back into the world along with a soul who was trapped in the Millennium Puzzle and remembers absolutely nothing of his past. together, they navigate unlocking this ancient mystery over the course of four years until their searching inevitably brings them back to Egypt where it all began.

i'm omitting a lot because i'd be here all day if i wrote out the synopsis of the entire franchise, but my favourite element of the entire story is it's whole battle between light and dark, and how you learn how morally grey everyone involved actually is.

i will say that i tend to lean towards my own headcanons and fanon than actual canon because--as someone who was once one of those kids obsessed with ancient Egypt--i need more of yugioh to be based in actual history and mythology. but more importantly, the 4Kids dub leaves a lot to be desired.

if you're thinking about getting into yugioh, i would really recommend reading the manga (coloured / black & white) because it maintains the original tone for yugioh. the next thing i would recommend is to watch the Season 0 anime. it doesn't have an official english dub, but it does have subs and follows the original manga very closely. unfortunately, it ends before the Duelist Kingdom arc begins.

lastly, there's always the 4Kids dub that the majority of people are familiar with. i have a love/hate relationship with the 4Kids dub. while it does make yugioh more accessible to the english-speaking audience, its writing reduces the weight of the story and strength of its characters in favour of sanitizing everything for christian audiences and showing off the duels. but that's a whole other rant haha

i hope i made yugioh sound interesting enough for you to check out because i would love if more people could get into it and see it's potential beyond a trading card game!

I have published one (1) fic in this timeline and hopefully there will be like a dozen more. Or something idk how many but at least 3 or 4 that i have details for and probably other oneshots. I think i just need to write about my bird boy's backstory and it will finally fix me. But first i must write Everything Else

The Antarctic Empire had practically taken over the world as they abused the way maps were supposed to be made, and only in a short matter of time too. Phil and Techno individually hadn’t expected this kind of outcome, only for seperate reasons but nevertheless were glad it turned out this way.

SMP Earth had eventually come to a stop and so did the ability to stay in the world.

“So what are your plans when this is all over?” Phil murmured cracking open a beer and passing it to Techno as they enjoyed one of the last sunsets to happen on the server.

“Nothin much, I had a side war with another guy on a different server and that ones looking pretty close to the end.” Technoblade took a long swig from the beer bottle as his eyes wandered aimlessly around the terrain.

“You should come with me for awhile, I’ve kept in touch with my family and I think they’d like you.”

“Maybe in the future then.”

At midnight, exactly a week and two days after the end of SMP Earth that Philza had gotten a message that Technoblade was coming to visit and needed permission into his world, and at three twenty-nine in the morning Technoblade had logged onto the world.

“What’s going on Techno? It’s three in the morning.” Phil asked as he walked down the steps of his porch and began walking towards where Technoblade had appeared.

“Oh. Sorry, forgot sleep schedules are a thing.” Techno murmured, “I wanted to visit to let you know I’ve won the potato war in person since this is an optimal excuse to see you.”

And like that, the two spent until six-thirty celebrating Technos victory.

“Dad?” Came the voice of one of Phils children after Technoblade logged off.

“Oh! Hey there Wilbur, why’re you up so early?”

“I woke up to you talking with that guy that just left, who was he?”

“He’s a friend I made while I was in SMP Earth, he wanted to stop by to catch up. Now go back to sleep, it’s still early in the morning.”

“Okay dad.” Wilbur mumbled turning to go back upstairs.

It had been a few weeks since the first visit, a steady on and off random visits schedule had begun to form in that time, Technoblade visiting in the late hours of the night and leaving just before late hours. Today seemed to be quite different however, a notification appearing in chat informing Phil someone had joined the world with no prior notice.

“Dad? Who’s that?” Tommy asked looking up at Phil.

“It seems a friend of mine has joined, you go sit down and eat your breakfast before it gets cold.” Phil replied ushering Tommy to sit at the table Wilbur was seated at.

Before Phil was Technoblade standing on the porch in a slouch nervously looking at the now open door. “Techno?”

“Heya Phil, surprise?”

“You know that still doesn’t answer my question man.”

“Dad Dad! Wil and Techno are twins!” Tommy shouted as Phil entered the room with a cup of coffee.

“Yeah, me and him have the exact same birthday.”

Philza sputtered for a moment. “Your fifteen Techno?”

“I know right?”

“What- does this mean I’ve committed war crimes with a fifteen year old?”

“No, you were committing war crimes with a thirteen to fourteen year old, don’t know if that’s any better though.”

Wilbur let out a long laugh as Techno let out a small grin while Philza was practically going through the five stages of grief.

Quackity: We literally had an execution set up to kill your son.

Tubbo: Your son? Technoblade??

Phil: He’s not my son.

Tubbo: Doesn’t he have the same birthday Wilbur did??

Phil: He does.

Quackity and Tubbo: ???

Phil: He might be like a son but we’re more like war buddies after committing so many war crimes together back on SMP Earth.

Tubbo: What?

Quackity: What the fUucK??
