Slowdive
Tumblr media
Commonly identified as shoegaze, Slowdive nonetheless exhibited a broader set of inspirations -- one that spanned four decades, including folk-rock, dub, and ambient techno -- than the majority of their '90s contemporaries. A combination of geographic origin, labelmates such as My Bloody Valentine and Ride, and a sustained predilection for dreamlike harmonies and psychedelicized layers of guitar, led to inevitable restrictive classification. The band's distinctive sound continually evolved from their late-'80s start through 1995, when they closed out their first phase with a misunderstood ambient album that shed nearly all rock convention. Two decades later, while most of the members remained involved with individual pursuits, the band was reactivated for touring and recorded again.
Formed in Reading, England in late 1989, Slowdive originally consisted of Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (guitar, vocals), Neil Halstead (guitar, vocals), Christian Savill (guitar), and Adrian Sell (drums). Goswell, Halstead, and Sell were previously the core of the Pumpkin Fairies, an indie-pop act that had recorded a demo. Savill was a member of Eternal, who released a single on Sarah. Within less than a year, Slowdive signed to Alan McGee's Creation label and released their debut, a self-titled EP of demos. "Slowdive" itself was named Single of the Week by Melody Maker. Morningrise, featuring temporary drummer Neil Carter, and Holding Our Breath, with ex-Charlottes member Simon Scott on board, followed as the band's second and third EPs of sleepy, escapist dream pop. "Morningrise" appeared on the U.K. pop chart for one week (registering at number 83), as did the third EP's "Catch the Breeze" (which entered at number 52). Both songs were likewise praised by Melody Maker. The same publication dubbed Slowdive part of "The Scene That Celebrates Itself," a small and loose conglomerate of guitar bands, including Lush, Moose, Swervedriver, and the pre-Britpop Blur, that could be seen at each other's shows.
Just for a Day, Slowdive's debut album, was released in September 1991. Though it placed in the Top Ten of the indie chart and climbed to number 32 on the pop chart, the U.K. press was not as supportive as it had been in the past. Months later, the Blue Day compilation appeared on the racks. It combined the band's first three singles, leaving off their version of Syd Barrett's "Golden Hair" and the instrumental version of "Avalyn." The band's sound developed significantly for Souvlaki (titled in reference to a favorite skit by telephone pranksters the Jerky Boys), released in June 1993. Assisted by Brian Eno on a couple tracks and mixed by Ed Buller, it was even more atmospheric than the debut, an exemplary "studio as instrument" album of the era, elevated by refined songwriting. Dates with Catherine Wheel were intended to promote the album in the U.S., but snags with Stateside label SBK ensured that Slowdive toured a country where their latest album was available only sparingly as an expensive Creation import. When the U.S. edition of Souvlaki did arrive, eight months after its original U.K. release, it added four bonus tracks, including three-quarters of the 5 EP. Issues with SBK came to a head when the label pulled financial support from a later tour. The band responded by funding a two-week tour themselves and sold a live cassette to help pay the way. Despite poor promotion in the States, the band had cultivated a sizable following through word of mouth and short tours.
The band's third studio album was released in 1995. Pygmalion was essentially a solo ambient recording by Halstead with guest vocals from Goswell and occasional percussion from Ian McCutcheon (ex-Mermaids), though all five members were listed in the liners. Taken further than the ambient techno slant of the 5 EP, it was mostly beatless. Within a couple weeks of the album's release, Creation, who had expected something else, dropped the band. Goswell, Halstead, and McCutcheon swiftly moved on with Mojave 3, signed by 4AD on the strength of a demo that basically became the first of their five albums released through the 2000s. In 2014, Chaplin, Goswell, Halstead, Savill, and Scott -- most of whom had remained active with numerous bands and solo activities -- resumed as Slowdive to play festivals and tour on multiple continents. The quintet eventually made a fourth album, Slowdive, released on Secretly Canadian sublabel Dead Oceans in May 2017. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi.

World Building June in July: Day 3
Who lives in your world?
As stated, the world of Terra Faerma is not completely removed from the traditional structure of Forgotten Realms, or similar places in the greater Dungeons & Dragons multiverse - but, where the pieces fall can be very different. For example, while the “traditional 5 races” exist here - Dwarves, Gnomes, Halflings, Elves, and Humans -, their relationship to one another and their history at the point of the year 10K413 of the Age of the Violence Storm should give some indication into Terra Faerma’s alternate position.
Dwarves in Terra Faerma are in fact kin to Giants; Giant-kin in fact can be differentiated amongst the greater Humanoid family by the severe reduction of their ears, as opposed to Goblin-kin with their more pronounced ears. Specifically, Dwarves as giant-kin came about within the shadow of their much, much larger cousins, coming to depend on the hierarchy to the point of many dwelling inside the bodies of vast Titan-giants. In the modern age, the dominant Dwarf-culture rules from deep Underkingdoms, with a hierarchy extending deep beneath the surface of the planet. Dwarves are also defined by a deep history and legacy; it was a combination of their records and Elven book-keeping that defined the current understanding of the 9 Ages of the Dreaming World. Names are kept, remembered, and rarely recycled, with a single Dwarf often going by a combination of many names. There is an emphasis on immortality, having one’s name or deeds extend far, far beyond the lives of their peers.
Gnomes are also Giant-kin, but while their cousins the Dwarves have built themselves beneath the surface, the Gnomes keep close to Nature. Gnome-folk have contributed much to the healthy ecosystems of the Overside of Terra Faerma, enough so that they can form the cornerstone of many small environments. They know the tongues of beasts and plants, and much of their magic is dedicated to keeping the balance between their civilization and the bounties of the natural world. Gnomes rarely seem to live together, but only to the untrained eye; beyond the Material Plane, there are vast demi-planes built through Gnome-homes that expand and accommodate hundreds of thousands. Gnommish culture is particularly entranced by novelty - there is a distinction placed on coming up with something that no one else has come up with before, or mastering a skill that no one else has (even if that skill contributes nothing). It is believed by some that the traditions of certain adventurous classes - Bards especially - were constructed on particularly Gnommish traditions.
Halflings, through tangled taxonomies, are more closely related to Goblins than they might perhaps be to Elves or other Bigfolk. Distant ancestors of theirs, the Kender, excelled in picking apart the hypocrisies of larger civilization, and when the Giants fell the Kender grew ever smaller. Their history is shrouded in secrecy by design; much Illusion and Abjuration magic is spoken in the languages of the hills. There is a prevalent belief amongst the clans that the Halfling story is but the dream of a greater spirit, and that if told too much will make holes in the plot apparent, and so fade away forever. Equally narratively-minded, the Halfling clans and warrens respect above all else Great Folk who make individual names for themselves, though it is a great honor to be named after many heroes at once.
Elves, as implied, are related to Goblins - they and many others in fact make up the “Goblin-kin” side of the greater Humanoid family tree. Through this, Orcs are understood to be a kind of Elf, as are Humans. While those species have identities that are altogether inclusive, however, Elven culture is exclusionist by nature. There is a great splitting up of the Elven family into a variety of “sub-races” - from High Elves, to Wood Elves, to Shadar-Kai and Eladrin, to even the protean Wild Ones or the wayward Star Children. Elven history begins with what is called the Great Sundering of the Elves, wherein some ur-ancestor of all the kinds of Elves were separated by some great disaster, and in that isolation drifted apart as they found new magics and Blood-Cures to define themselves. Speaking of Blood-Cures, these seem to be what make the different Elves endemic to one another - Trances, the innate magical abilities, and even details like the strict vegetarian diet are encoded through long-lasting curse-magics laced throughout generations at birth. Elves tend to live alone or in closely-knit groups, though happily willing to dominate others from their towers. The concept of the Overlord began with the Elves, as the Underking did with the Dwarves.
Humans are technically a kind of Elf (but never considered such by the Over-Councils), and are unique in their soul-potential. There is a fascinating quirk when it comes to the shape of their souls – it is believed to be “Tripartite”, and at a certain point in time the same individual Human can be a ghost, a revenant, and an ancestral spirit-guardian. The vast majority of organisms cannot do this, and certain spells (like Resurrection) won’t work for creatures with only the “Dipartite” soul, so Humans have picked up the strange stereotype of monstrous necromancers and mindless undead-fodder. Still, it is the humans who have filled the cities and tracked the roads of Terra Faerma, and over the last 20,000 years have defined themselves as god-makers and adventurers in turn. What’s more, perhaps through the unique soul-potential of these creatures, Humans have been capable of intermingling with many disparate species, even over the course of the Blood War when alien planes and planets intersected with the Material. Tieflings, Dragonborn, Genasi, Aasimar, and even Half-Elves and Half-Orcs are but a few things considered “human” in these societies.
There are many, many other organisms capable of speech, civilization, and the arcane arts on Terra Faerma as well - from the bizarre Aberrations like Beholders and Illithids, to the many groups of beast-folk that live amongst the margins. The beast-folk, especially, are numerous, with essentially any group of beasts (hyenas, cats, birds, etc.) seems to have a sentient, somewhat humanoid representative. There are certain beast-folk who have actually banded together in response to opposition from the Humanoids as “gnolls” - hyena-folk, tuatara-folk, bat-folk, and opposum-folk are but a few species that make up this socio-political group.
Similarly, there are many groups of Goblin-kin and Giant-kin that tend to join Orc society, usually making their livelihoods within the Brutelands. The tradition of Orc-Quantum defines citizenship being limited to Orcs, as Elven or Dwarven societies might limit their citizenship to Elves or Dwarves - but, “orc” is defined almost like a state of mind. Bugbears, Goblins, Hobgoblins, Ogres, Lizardfolk, and even groups of Humans or other Elves are welcomed as orcs within these sprawling societies.

Fishing I Love A Good Pole Dance Vintage T Shirt
RESTROOM SHE DOES I DO NOT TRUST A Fishing I Love A Good Pole Dance Vintage T Shirt POLITICIAN WITHOUT CHILDREN WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON THAT I DON’T KNOW MAYBE MAYBE TO USE HARRIS’S OWN WORDS MAYBE SHE WAS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 AND 24 MAYBE SHE DID SOME DUMB THINGS THAT MAY OR START STERILE STERILE YOU FROM YOU IS THAT DUMB THINGS ALL THEY SAID OH NO THEY SELL THEIR EGGS IN ALL THEY SELL MONEY YOU GET WHEN WHO KNEW THAT THE YOUNG YES I SO SOMETIMES THEY DO SOME DUMB THINGS I DON’T KNOW I DON’T KNOW I HAVE WHY SHE NEVER HAD ANY CHILDREN SHE’S PROBABLY STERILE SOMETIMES A WOMAN MAY NOT BE STERILE SOMETIMES THEY SIMPLY DON’T WANT CHILDREN SOMETIMES YOU HAVE WOMEN WEAR SOME STERILIZE THEM AND IT WAS NOT THEIR DESIRE TO BE STERILIZE YET IS YOU THAT BLACK WOMEN IN AMERICA NOT JUST AMERICA BUT THEY BEEN STERILIZE HYSTERECTOMIES WHERE THAT THE UNIVERSE IS REMOVED SO HARRIS A STORY I DON’T KNOW BUT YOU ALSO NOT REALIZED THAT MICHELLE OBAMA HER TWO DAUGHTERS WERE BORN OF SURROGATE MOTHER SURROGATE MOTHER SO I DON’T KNOW THE WHOLE STARTING MAN OKAY SO AND. Make sure to litigate the fact that check this out boysand we didand he didn’t affect his idea about this movieand were discussing the going on with all is after a while what we started I get taken it seriously does realize it was a pretty cool idea about you taking to the movieand fit in with the overall song is pretty basic idea songs about the bookand a movie after that the state tells that little guy with a box on the day he now cool to do it with like when you concept with it also noticed with in a sanity is yet a concept that’s really only telling half of itand then do so many things about videos I think that we still don’t know that work learning about things you do when you like I did get all with different visual things he can do with blending thingsand all the crap that were like complete newand weird so you know the idea was that it was pretty cooland the whole way was put together that’s what made it work very focused trialand message to the family until incurring the going anti now seems to be the site awareand you know Texas about which were by yearand a half takes us you know which is about six months offand then the we start writing salsa wood on the recordsand longed to year is three years already so it seems to be what we can stuck in right now so you know only on 94 is taking time with anything you know you want to just write in the mechanic at the money now to make sure that it’s rightand how long you’re in the studio always causing as much oh my God you know in the long run it is really matter if you’re happy with the workand six month break we definitely needed after that long to her in writing materialand we take pride in his chair out in a 30 sauceand pick up 12 best whatever caseand it would To finally write daily life cannot be fairly quick actually clicked by standards I think the whole brining process took about eight weeks eight weeks premature never saw him it was quiteand I was just like been three years last on the ideas are stacking up was just kind of taking eight months offand all that was really an email the right thing to do because when we can actually like really gung hoand going for some pretty much the right thing to do is fill out we get a couple must account a jam onand I was the cool thing we didn’t get to do that on some of the other albums you have a few of them readyand we all jam togetherand go in the studioand still be writing stuff for the other guys never even played it with us so you two is about the stars maker is a risk can safely say that this lonely can add them off a couple monthsand generally settled in to see where they were going all the vocal stuff is almost ready to go to the next phrasing so when you can where the song was sitting helps like with each person doing drum step by step on the vocals of time things it was the first time that we ever actually counted with a producerand somebody else was kind of like weird at first light when the rehearsal roomand the site guys in the room taking notes of my of those scary first couple days but got comfortable with that he was just as great you really changed much around the song line but it was good that somebody can fit throwing ideas can blend almost like what other bands do refining is a no signing they want a lot of things I regret like a year later Lindsay like the last couple years just to open up your mind to different things got to go with what feels like you can’t worry about what you said four years ago in an interview in Langley look at things differentlyand get olderand obviously felt thing I was even like it was like a list of people that was just like well it is Bob rock on it we should meet him so we flew upand then was not like a huge thing to me does not like people history something being forced upon us by management a record company payroll very happy that we finally sort of look outside todayand for somebody else to help with planning unit was never really a producer in the classic sense of how worried he was more like a technical for super engineer Canada push the buttonand when really cannot say in there this amino real Canada coaching he said at a counter is not a performance oriented which I think it became apparent to those who really needed somebody to start helping us get some life into Iraq Tinaand him Bob makes pretty lively records flooding knew what we wanted sound wise the sign performs at an early screw this I thought I could fulfill that the way you really knew what is supposed to doand the producer does is makes you sound more like you not not taking Bon Jovi ideasand put them on this band is not his thing in pulling the best of value being object from a different way you might sitand go you know how I want to know what they did because you like in the middle of tracking is something like they just can’t step outside yourselfand can looking for somebody like Bob really helpful when Canadian what is your afterand then when you feel that okay now this guy understands what it is whereafter then you can leave it with you Dominicans were a lot more about performancesand going for them the engines were about overseeingand making no major decision you know cannot about that kind of stuff so it can lilies of us to deal with potential to greatly justify the ones we didn’t trust him it took a little while when you finally say this guy knows aware what we want do is wake upand it was cool in any so that the couple weeks but I’m low levels strain theand domestic fail taband select thought unknown failing to agree that is little will pull the simple timing the simplicity of it all you hear the easy things to Gary register saw a different approach to songwriting in a different thing to go for production wising a lot of people have been shown the last couple weeks is easier record to Mason to mechanic say that you know suggesting a contrived thing but the thing is when you have a different approach the way you write the songsand you have like she almost like enjoy yourself when you’re playing that comes across like a different feeling record before then I think all those things make it easier listen to is not sent down to make a record that is you listen to dislike were like having fun in all this attitudeand then comes through in the planeand that makes it easy for you listen to cannot be part of what we trying to deny me heavy load that isolates the styleand how the law last think we really try a lot of that stuff a lot more self conscious if I comes up interviews afterwards sitting somebody throw the question is what you want we do that will make you know we just do things you would always wanted to do things differently than what a lot everybody else is doing sometimes might look at somebody elseand discounted subconsciously save your cell wall maybe things will be differentand wanted to spend a go this way for a while is not to vilify myself interviewsand talking about it seems like what we do things happen in people always want answers afterwards weird analyze something that doesn’t really take a lot when it is taught is getting together you mean it will fit adult looks like shorter songsand conversation taken off five seconds like arthritis source out okay in a letter to this okay like you know 30 seconds later why do you think of things that contain one more more answers in England but anywhere else What would you think about all this concept that’s happening the mine would get sand shooting a band engineering band shooting us never a big fan of being shot but the video cameras okay you get you get professionals out there that their little jaded with all that hailand put my mark on this with thisand this is my styleand that I well anybody really if you’ve been doing it long enough you you develop a styleand it’s kind of hard to break out of that the fans shoot from that basically she was able to see so it makes total sense one thing that people can be curious about the tatsand dumb I was just wondering what you had any that you could maybe briefly show whatever it’s a good bit of the story about what it’s in the means to you yet while I mean these guys here first of all means but through my time of the country infatuated with Angelsand just the the next afterlife or somethingand you know my parents leaving us are earlier than others having some kind of guide in my life because I know I like I should’ve died hundreds of timesand I’m not the only one but I can only speak for myself that I know there are things like after I’ve done something like that was really stupid I could like man made my mom or dad or somebody is it made made car turn this way instead or somethingand it’s it’s kinda nice to see those those are realize those things this is my higher power this is an angel bringing the gift of music to me these are actually my hands the the tattoo artist Jack Rudy he he took a Polaroid of my handsand then he copied him so that’s meand struggle this is the angel bringing me music to help me through the fireand this in Latin is don’t die which means gift from God so this one is besides my kids namesand all of the other many of obviously are not meanings but this one is pretty importantand then Cliff you know this is cleverly Burtonand this is the middle bit 20 Ryan the base part delete duty duty do it on right those people find it hard enough to stop drinking like you to win stresses alive around the I know I my battle leaving the bottle way too often some like yourself who has a polygon the US scrutinized by people unfairly whatever like what you kept you going to be Abba to do to do what he can do what you did set deck can’t be an easy thing is it is tough inand learn in certain tools is important to be on the road especially while you are nowadays there’s a lot more bands out there that the bottles not that important to them or the drug or the smoke of the whatever the checks into whatever it is that sidetrack you a lot is not as important as it seems as it used to be but yeah can be challenging on the stuff they’re sitting right in front of you know in them for me is it I’m not really haven’t been really good at long term goals in healthand long term happiness is was always pretty foreign to me to be happy right now I want it now is I feel like shitand into the drain chair that whatever was always a quick quick fix to use it but if I want to if I want to miss it if I eat off of five of five feed the dog that says this was so great remembering this or if I feed the dog that says do look how great your life is right now look at the crap that you used to be in the know this that depends on how you look at itand I know I could I could I could go back in things up pretty quick quickand I don’t need to do that so but also you went you know the criticizing that the public guide of things like that it really depends on my mood is on a really good mood I can I can take anything at any time but if I’m feeling a little insecure little tired or look hungry or whatever it is or just know fraid from the roadand that’s why we don’t go out for such long periods of time as you do you start to get fraid in your head starts to swell you think you’re greater than you are in all of this stuffand I could do whatever I wantand then all of a sudden you don’t do stuff I don’t need to be doing so keep in keep in the tour legs shorter has helped a lotand in all the criticism he has is people are people man you know were no greater than each other we get the same size souland were trying to try to feel happy nor trying to feel loved simple as thatand some people think if they could put someone else down they feel a little more the ego comforts them a little bit I know what that’s like mad so I I contributed to that psychologist being like that now you know get nothing to do with me so been able to tick tenant let it bounce off it is sometimes difficult but that’s the tool I like to use what is it that so that prevents you from some straying away from you telling it there there there are two sites me on that the one side is I’m so happy here I get to write whatever I want to I just wrote an intro to my apocalypse last weekand we played at the concert the other night all this is awesome is a lot of freedom if you let it you know that is a lot of times when we all can it get hung up on each otherand want to try this is like wool may be no way you know this the democraciesand and now I got step backand think second level maybe that’s best that’s best for us for not all in agreement with it let’s not do it man you know or management thinks while this is maybe a bad idea likeand fighting a little bit on itand then click well wherever the passion is I’ll believe you probably be on that the true passion is the keyand that is that we go with that so obviously enough of that in the band to be Abba to the sustain you without taking to the credit elsewhere I think I keep trying to do stuff outside of it you even feel like writing nothing else matters that was not metallic I was not gonna be from attackand I was just meand my head in my know misery for a whileand they heard itand said he ring it onand so it seems like anything is able to be metallic now which is fine as the other side of me this like well you know they’re keeping me know management doesn’t me to do this because it’s affecting the name of the band so I can’t do what I want here in theand he gets gets it gets single mindedand this does notand I know that’s not the right thing to do you know we got a great thing going here is this this part of me that thinks you know as soon as somebody goes offand does a side projectand how I don’t take them seriously anymoreand not not to knock other bands but say it you must let not Corey amazing from an amazing singer please don’t really know which band e zine at the moment you know he’s got so many things going onand if that’s you knowand I can’t I certainly won’t judge him on that if the if it’s maybe it’s maybe he’s doing that to survive maybe the money thing is tough or who knows what it is but maybe not getting in all the stuff that he needs to get in but that’s his that’s his journey I don’t I know I would much rather I think I think I think dedicationand loyalty it was a long way with me what album to you like what you a young kid was one of those outlets I said this is this is my calling man like what the hell is this a guardian more of it by add abuse set black Sabbath no one out of all the records in my brother’s record collection my my my brothers 10 years older than I he was in a bandand he had all kinds of albumsand email from Jethro told of the Beatles to whatever all this other stuff in a put on black Sabbath that was that was pretty much it like Sabbath like Sabbath you self taught here had the first album put it onand it was while this is differentand I like this you know this is got some cool it’s got some ball this got some heaviness it’s got a little bit of scariness in there but as its next level you know it’s is taking it a step further this is just not regular bouncy rock this is the highlight of the way this has this has emotion behind it says howand help our fear whatever it really has to do with your roots man when you’re growing up that stuff so importantand it’s so impressionable on you so everyone has that in their lifeand whatever bandit is at that time you know for my wife it’s no Phil Collins that’s okay it moves her that she reminds her of stuff of her teen years or something that she connects withand goes while I can ground myself in his music for me going back listening to Sabbath listening to Skynyrd listening to UFO listening to priest listening to early maiden stuff like that it does that it does that for me with your proudest track that you overwritten personally itself that’s difficult question because I think we’ve all we’ve all accomplished some great things that with different feels there are some songs that we cannot forget about that I think are pretty amazing I think leading me is one of those moments I think outlaw torn I think the picture you a little bit of those epic E in a with its cut instrumentals with lyrics really there is I’d say the third verse in unforgiven to is a distant when it when it breaks downand there’s that way around land where you know the little law plane is parting from Bob Roxio in the lawand second were professional now it sounds like it’s almost Jimmy page you know so where we were entering the realm of zeppelin at that pointand not pretty proud of that to this easy to most of them going on stage he says something which is up to the back your head that use of sale as you used to be afraid of on the stage but obviously five that yeah water afraid of drowning them out I would say I think all of us together used to be a lot more scared to be okay with no wrong to be wrong were playing just a variation on the album you can get away or you can just say hey I felt it my best I try my bestand that’s all I can do if it was you know 30 in Russia when we played that soloing in my fingers froze up that’s as good as I could do work at my throat was swollen shut like that I’m trying to say nothing else matters I did my best so I think were a little bit better at accepting how things are in the I’d say the thing I’m most afraid of his probably like something like my back going out something like that on stage wishes like you go downand then the wheelchair comes up at the stretcher SCA will make this one up you know you don’t like making gigs upand I’ve kinda been the one who’s been making everyone else make up most the gigs with’s broken arms are catching on fire backs going out or eating bad oysters yeah that’s actually not remembering something on the website about that is like you seem to have that strength that you two way this way keep on going to get the fuck right train rolling while your bestand if it we can do a show you where human at the end of the day if we can’t will make it upand that’s the best we can doand if people travel a long time ways you know to come to that show that they can’t make it the other dates it’s a bummer but it’s part of life in can be superhuman fuel questions always late but yet thank you I really appreciate on really hope they show guys wealthy guys next to not something awesome displaying a part of everything he liked the three days of living doing this with Chaffin Vicki’s it’s it’s been great also experience I really had Gladys Louise Smith (April 8, 1892 – May 29, 1979), known professionally as Mary Pickford, was a Canadian-born American film actress and producer with a career spanning 50 years. She was a co-founder of the Pickford–Fairbanks Studios with Douglas Fairbanks and the United Artists studio with Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, and D. W. Griffith, and she was one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which presents the yearly Oscar Awards ceremony.
Pickford was known in her prime as "America's Sweetheart" and the "girl with the curls". She was one of the Canadian pioneers in early Hollywood and a significant figure in the development of film acting. She was one of the earliest stars to be billed under her own name, and was one of the most popular actresses of the 1910s and 1920s, earning the nickname "Queen of the Movies". She is credited with having defined the ingénue type in cinema.
She was awarded the second Academy Award for Best Actress for her first sound film role in Coquette (1929), and she also received an Academy Honorary Award in 1976 in consideration of her contributions to American cinema. The American Film Institute ranked her as 24th in its 1999 list of greatest female stars of classic Hollywood Cinema.
Mary Pickford was born Gladys Louise Smith in 1892 (although she later claimed 1893 or 1894 as her year of birth) at 211 University Avenue, Toronto, Ontario. Her father, John Charles Smith, was the son of English Methodist immigrants, and worked a variety of odd jobs. Her mother, Charlotte Hennessey, was of Irish Catholic descent and worked for a time as a seamstress. She had two younger siblings, Charlotte, called "Lottie" (born 1893), and John Charles, called "Jack" (born 1896), who also became actors. To please her husband's relatives, Pickford's mother baptized her children as Methodists, the religion of their father. John Charles Smith was an alcoholic; he abandoned the family and died on February 11, 1898, from a fatal blood clot caused by a workplace accident when he was a purser with Niagara Steamship.
When Gladys was four years old, her household was under infectious quarantine as a public health measure. Their devoutly Catholic maternal grandmother (Catherine Faeley Hennessey) asked a visiting Roman Catholic priest to baptize the children. Pickford was at this time baptized as Gladys Marie Smith.
After being widowed in 1899, Charlotte Smith began taking in boarders, one of whom was a Mr. Murphy, the theatrical stage manager for Cummings Stock Company, who soon suggested that Gladys, then age seven, and Lottie, then age six, be given two small theatrical roles – Gladys portrayed a girl and a boy, while Lottie was cast in a silent part in the company's production of The Silver King at Toronto's Princess Theatre (destroyed by fire in 1915, rebuilt, demolished in 1931), while their mother played the organ. Pickford subsequently acted in many melodramas with Toronto's Valentine Stock Company, finally playing the major child role in its version of The Silver King. She capped her short career in Toronto with the starring role of Little Eva in the Valentine production of Uncle Tom's Cabin, adapted from the 1852 novel.
By the early 1900s, theatre had become a family enterprise. Gladys, her mother and two younger siblings toured the United States by rail, performing in third-rate companies and plays. After six impoverished years, Pickford allowed one more summer to land a leading role on Broadway, planning to quit acting if she failed. In 1906 Gladys, Lottie and Jack Smith supported singer Chauncey Olcott on Broadway in Edmund Burke. Gladys finally landed a supporting role in a 1907 Broadway play, The Warrens of Virginia. The play was written by William C. deMille, whose brother, Cecil, appeared in the cast. David Belasco, the producer of the play, insisted that Gladys Smith assume the stage name Mary Pickford. After completing the Broadway run and touring the play, however, Pickford was again out of work.
On April 19, 1909, the Biograph Company director D. W. Griffith screen-tested her at the company's New York studio for a role in the nickelodeon film Pippa Passes. The role went to someone else but Griffith was immediately taken with Pickford. She quickly grasped that movie acting was simpler than the stylized stage acting of the day. Most Biograph actors earned $5 a day but, after Pickford's single day in the studio, Griffith agreed to pay her $10 a day against a guarantee of $40 a week.
Pickford, like all actors at Biograph, played both bit parts and leading roles, including mothers, ingenues, charwomen, spitfires, slaves, Native Americans, spurned women, and a prostitute. As Pickford said of her success at Biograph:
I played scrubwomen and secretaries and women of all nationalities ... I decided that if I could get into as many pictures as possible, I'd become known, and there would be a demand for my work.
She appeared in 51 films in 1909 – almost one a week - with her first starring role being in The Violin Maker of Cremona opposite future husband Owen Moore. While at Biograph, she suggested to Florence La Badie to "try pictures", invited her to the studio and later introduced her to D. W. Griffith, who launched La Badie's career.
In January 1910, Pickford traveled with a Biograph crew to Los Angeles. Many other film companies wintered on the West Coast, escaping the weak light and short days that hampered winter shooting in the East. Pickford added to her 1909 Biographs (Sweet and Twenty, They Would Elope, and To Save Her Soul, to name a few) with films made in California.
Actors were not listed in the credits in Griffith's company. Audiences noticed and identified Pickford within weeks of her first film appearance. Exhibitors, in turn, capitalized on her popularity by advertising on sandwich boards that a film featuring "The Girl with the Golden Curls", "Blondilocks", or "The Biograph Girl" was inside.
Pickford left Biograph in December 1910. The following year, she starred in films at Carl Laemmle's Independent Moving Pictures Company (IMP). IMP was absorbed into Universal Pictures in 1912, along with Majestic. Unhappy with their creative standards, Pickford returned to work with Griffith in 1912. Some of her best performances were in his films, such as Friends, The Mender of Nets, Just Like a Woman, and The Female of the Species. That year, Pickford also introduced Dorothy and Lillian Gish– whom she had befriended as new neighbors from Ohio –to Griffith, and each became major silent film stars, in comedy and tragedy, respectively. Pickford made her last Biograph picture, The New York Hat, in late 1912.
She returned to Broadway in the David Belasco production of A Good Little Devil (1912). This was a major turning point in her career. Pickford, who had always hoped to conquer the Broadway stage, discovered how deeply she missed film acting. In 1913, she decided to work exclusively in film. The previous year, Adolph Zukor had formed Famous Players in Famous Plays. It was later known as Famous Players-Lasky and then Paramount Pictures, one of the first American feature film companies.
Pickford left the stage to join Zukor's roster of stars. Zukor believed film's potential lay in recording theatrical players in replicas of their most famous stage roles and productions. Zukor first filmed Pickford in a silent version of A Good Little Devil. The film, produced in 1913, showed the play's Broadway actors reciting every line of dialogue, resulting in a stiff film that Pickford later called "one of the worst [features] I ever made ... it was deadly".[1] Zukor agreed; he held the film back from distribution for a year.
Pickford's work in material written for the camera by that time had attracted a strong following. Comedy-dramas, such as In the Bishop's Carriage (1913), Caprice (1913), and especially Hearts Adrift (1914), made her irresistible to moviegoers. Hearts Adrift was so popular that Pickford asked for the first of her many publicized pay raises based on the profits and reviews. The film marked the first time Pickford's name was featured above the title on movie marquees. Tess of the Storm Country was released five weeks later. Biographer Kevin Brownlow observed that the film "sent her career into orbit and made her the most popular actress in America, if not the world".
Her appeal was summed up two years later by the February 1916 issue of Photoplay as "luminous tenderness in a steel band of gutter ferocity". Only Charlie Chaplin, who slightly surpassed Pickford's popularity in 1916, had a similarly spellbinding pull with critics and the audience. Each enjoyed a level of fame far exceeding that of other actors. Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, Pickford was believed to be the most famous woman in the world, or, as a silent-film journalist described her, "the best known woman who has ever lived, the woman who was known to more people and loved by more people than any other woman that has been in all history".
Pickford starred in 52 features throughout her career. On June 24, 1916, Pickford signed a new contract with Zukor that granted her full authority over production of the films in which she starred, and a record-breaking salary of $10,000 a week. In addition, Pickford's compensation was half of a film's profits, with a guarantee of $1,040,000 (US$18,500,000 in 2020), making her the first actress to sign a million dollar contract. She also became vice-president of Pickford Film Corporation.
Occasionally, she played a child, in films such as The Poor Little Rich Girl (1917), Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1917), Daddy-Long-Legs (1919) and Pollyanna (1920). Pickford's fans were devoted to these "little girl" roles, but they were not typical of her career. Due to her lack of a normal childhood, she enjoyed making these pictures. Given how small she was at under five feet, and her naturalistic acting abilities, she was very successful in these roles. Douglas Fairbanks Jr., when he first met her in person as a boy, assumed she was a new playmate for him, and asked her to come and play trains with him, which she obligingly did.
In August 1918, Pickford's contract expired and, when refusing Zukor's terms for a renewal, she was offered $250,000 to leave the motion picture business. She declined, and went to First National Pictures, which agreed to her terms.[24] In 1919, Pickford, along with D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, and Douglas Fairbanks, formed the independent film production company United Artists. Through United Artists, Pickford continued to produce and perform in her own movies; she could also distribute them as she chose. In 1920, Pickford's film Pollyanna grossed around $1,100,000. The following year, Pickford's film Little Lord Fauntleroy was also a success, and in 1923, Rosita grossed over $1,000,000 as well. During this period, she also made Little Annie Rooney (1925), another film in which Pickford played a child, Sparrows (1926), which blended the Dickensian with newly minted German expressionist style, and My Best Girl (1927), a romantic comedy featuring her future husband Buddy Rogers.
The arrival of sound was her undoing. Pickford underestimated the value of adding sound to movies, claiming that "adding sound to movies would be like putting lipstick on the Venus de Milo".
She played a reckless socialite in Coquette (1929), her first talkie, a role for which her famous ringlets were cut into a 1920s' bob. Pickford had already cut her hair in the wake of her mother's death in 1928. Fans were shocked at the transformation. Pickford's hair had become a symbol of female virtue, and when she cut it, the act made front-page news in The New York Times and other papers. Coquette was a success and won her an Academy Award for Best Actress, although this was highly controversial. The public failed to respond to her in the more sophisticated roles. Like most movie stars of the silent era, Pickford found her career fading as talkies became more popular among audiences.
Her next film, The Taming of The Shrew, made with husband Douglas Fairbanks, was not well received at the box office. Established Hollywood actors were panicked by the impending arrival of the talkies. On March 29, 1928, The Dodge Brothers Hour was broadcast from Pickford's bungalow, featuring Fairbanks, Chaplin, Norma Talmadge, Gloria Swanson, John Barrymore, D.W. Griffith, and Dolores del Río, among others. They spoke on the radio show to prove that they could meet the challenge of talking movies.
A transition in the roles Pickford selected came when she was in her late 30s, no longer able to play the children, teenage spitfires, and feisty young women so adored by her fans, and was not suited for the glamorous and vampish heroines of early sound. In 1933, she underwent a Technicolor screen test for an animated/live action film version of Alice in Wonderland, but Walt Disney discarded the project when Paramount released its own version of the book. Only one Technicolor still of her screen test still exists.
She retired from film acting in 1933 following three costly failures with her last film appearance being Secrets. She appeared on stage in Chicago in 1934 in the play The Church Mouse and went on tour in 1935, starting in Seattle with the stage version of Coquette. She also appeared in a season of radio plays for NBC in 1935 and CBS in 1936. In 1936 she became vice-president of United Artists and continued to produce films for others, including One Rainy Afternoon (1936), The Gay Desperado (1936), Sleep, My Love (1948; with Claudette Colbert) and Love Happy (1949), with the Marx Brothers.
Pickford used her stature in the movie industry to promote a variety of causes. Although her image depicted fragility and innocence, she proved to be a strong businesswoman who took control of her career in a cutthroat industry.
During World War I she promoted the sale of Liberty Bonds, making an intensive series of fund-raising speeches, beginning in Washington, D.C., where she sold bonds alongside Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Theda Bara, and Marie Dressler. Five days later she spoke on Wall Street to an estimated 50,000 people. Though Canadian-born, she was a powerful symbol of Americana, kissing the American flag for cameras and auctioning one of her world-famous curls for $15,000. In a single speech in Chicago she sold an estimated five million dollars' worth of bonds. She was christened the U.S. Navy's official "Little Sister"; the Army named two cannons after her and made her an honorary colonel.
In 1916, Pickford and Mrs. Cecil B. DeMille helped found the Hollywood Studio Club, a dormitory for young women involved in the motion picture business. At the end of World War I, Pickford conceived of the Motion Picture Relief Fund, an organization to help financially needy actors. Leftover funds from her work selling Liberty Bonds were put toward its creation, and in 1921, the Motion Picture Relief Fund (MPRF) was officially incorporated, with Joseph Schenck voted its first president and Pickford its vice president. In 1932, Pickford spearheaded the "Payroll Pledge Program", a payroll-deduction plan for studio workers who gave one half of one percent of their earnings to the MPRF. As a result, in 1940, the Fund was able to purchase land and build the Motion Picture Country House and Hospital, in Woodland Hills, California.
An astute businesswoman, Pickford became her own producer within three years of her start in features. According to her Foundation, "she oversaw every aspect of the making of her films, from hiring talent and crew to overseeing the script, the shooting, the editing, to the final release and promotion of each project". She demanded (and received) these powers in 1916, when she was under contract to Zukor's Famous Players in Famous Plays (later Paramount). Zukor acquiesced to her refusal to participate in block-booking, the widespread practice of forcing an exhibitor to show a bad film of the studio's choosing to also be able to show a Pickford film. In 1916, Pickford's films were distributed, singly, through a special distribution unit called Artcraft. The Mary Pickford Corporation was briefly Pickford's motion-picture production company.
In 1919, she increased her power by co-founding United Artists (UA) with Charlie Chaplin, D. W. Griffith, and her soon-to-be husband, Douglas Fairbanks. Before UA's creation, Hollywood studios were vertically integrated, not only producing films but forming chains of theaters. Distributors (also part of the studios) arranged for company productions to be shown in the company's movie venues. Filmmakers relied on the studios for bookings; in return they put up with what many considered creative interference.
United Artists broke from this tradition. It was solely a distribution company, offering independent film producers access to its own screens as well as the rental of temporarily unbooked cinemas owned by other companies. Pickford and Fairbanks produced and shot their films after 1920 at the jointly owned Pickford-Fairbanks studio on Santa Monica Boulevard. The producers who signed with UA were true independents, producing, creating and controlling their work to an unprecedented degree. As a co-founder, as well as the producer and star of her own films, Pickford became the most powerful woman who has ever worked in Hollywood. By 1930, Pickford's acting career had largely faded. After retiring three years later, however, she continued to produce films for United Artists. She and Chaplin remained partners in the company for decades. Chaplin left the company in 1955, and Pickford followed suit in 1956, selling her remaining shares for $3 million.
She had bought the rights to many of her early silent films with the intention of burning them on her death, but in 1970 she agreed to donate 50 of her Biograph films to the American Film Institute. In 1976, she received an Academy Honorary Award for her contribution to American film.
Pickford was married three times. She married Owen Moore, an Irish-born silent film actor, on January 7, 1911. It is rumored she became pregnant by Moore in the early 1910s and had a miscarriage or an abortion. Some accounts suggest this resulted in her later inability to have children. The couple's marriage was strained by Moore's alcoholism, insecurity about living in the shadow of Pickford's fame, and bouts of domestic violence. The couple lived together on-and-off for several years.
Pickford became secretly involved in a relationship with Douglas Fairbanks. They toured the U.S. together in 1918 to promote Liberty Bond sales for the World War I effort. Around this time, Pickford also suffered from the flu during the 1918 flu pandemic. Pickford divorced Moore on March 2, 1920, after she agreed to his $100,000 demand for a settlement. She married Fairbanks just days later on March 28, 1920 in what was described as the "marriage of the century" and they were referred to as the King and Queen of Hollywood. They went to Europe for their honeymoon; fans in London and in Paris caused riots trying to get to the famous couple. The couple's triumphant return to Hollywood was witnessed by vast crowds who turned out to hail them at railway stations across the United States.
The Mark of Zorro (1920) and a series of other swashbucklers gave the popular Fairbanks a more romantic, heroic image. Pickford continued to epitomize the virtuous but fiery girl next door. Even at private parties, people instinctively stood up when Pickford entered a room; she and her husband were often referred to as "Hollywood royalty". Their international reputations were broad. Foreign heads of state and dignitaries who visited the White House often asked if they could also visit Pickfair, the couple's mansion in Beverly Hills.
Dinners at Pickfair became celebrity events. Charlie Chaplin, Fairbanks' best friend, was often present. Other guests included George Bernard Shaw, Albert Einstein, Elinor Glyn, Helen Keller, H. G. Wells, Lord Mountbatten, Fritz Kreisler, Amelia Earhart, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Noël Coward, Max Reinhardt, Baron Nishi, Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko,[38] Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Austen Chamberlain, Sir Harry Lauder, and Meher Baba, among others. The public nature of Pickford's second marriage strained it to the breaking point. Both she and Fairbanks had little time off from producing and acting in their films. They were also constantly on display as America's unofficial ambassadors to the world, leading parades, cutting ribbons, and making speeches. When their film careers both began to flounder at the end of the silent era, Fairbanks' restless nature prompted him to overseas travel (something which Pickford did not enjoy). When Fairbanks' romance with Sylvia, Lady Ashley became public in the early 1930s, he and Pickford separated. They divorced January 10, 1936. Fairbanks' son by his first wife, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., claimed his father and Pickford long regretted their inability to reconcile.
On June 24, 1937, Pickford married her third and last husband, actor and band leader Buddy Rogers. They adopted two children: Roxanne (born 1944, adopted 1944) and Ronald Charles (born 1937, adopted 1943, a.k.a. Ronnie Pickford Rogers). A PBS American Experience documentary described Pickford's relationship with her children as tense. She criticized their physical imperfections, including Ronnie's small stature and Roxanne's crooked teeth. Both children later said their mother was too self-absorbed to provide real maternal love. In 2003, Ronnie recalled that "Things didn't work out that much, you know. But I'll never forget her. I think that she was a good woman."
After retiring from the screen, Pickford became an alcoholic, as her father had been. Her mother Charlotte died of breast cancer in March 1928. Her siblings, Lottie and Jack, both died of alcohol-related causes. These deaths, her divorce from Fairbanks, and the end of silent films left Pickford deeply depressed. Her relationship with her adopted children, Roxanne and Ronald, was turbulent at best. Pickford withdrew and gradually became a recluse, remaining almost entirely at Pickfair and allowing visits only from Lillian Gish, her stepson Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and few other people.
In 1955, she published her memoirs, Sunshine and Shadows. She had previously published Why Not Try God in 1934, an essay on spirituality and personal growth, My Rendevouz of Life (1935), an essay on death and her belief in an afterlife and also a novel in 1935, The Demi-Widow. She appeared in court in 1959, in a matter pertaining to her co-ownership of North Carolina TV station WSJS-TV. The court date coincided with the date of her 67th birthday; under oath, when asked to give her age, Pickford replied: "I'm 21, going on 20."
In the mid-1960s, Pickford often received visitors only by telephone, speaking to them from her bedroom. Buddy Rogers often gave guests tours of Pickfair, including views of a genuine western bar Pickford had bought for Douglas Fairbanks, and a portrait of Pickford in the drawing room. A print of this image now hangs in the Library of Congress.[34] When Pickford received an Academy Honorary Award in 1976, the Academy sent a TV crew to her house to record her short statement of thanks – offering the public a very rare glimpse into Pickfair Manor. Charitable events continued to be held at Pickfair, including an annual Christmas party for blind war veterans, mostly from World War I.
Pickford believed that she had ceased to be a British subject when she married an American citizen upon her marriage to Fairbanks in 1920. Thus, she never acquired Canadian citizenship when it was first created in 1947. However, Pickford held and traveled under a British/Canadian passport which she renewed regularly at the British/Canadian consulates in Los Angeles, and she did not take out papers for American citizenship. She also owned a house in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Toward the end of her life, Pickford made arrangements with the Canadian Department of Citizenship to officially acquire Canadian citizenship because she wished to "die as a Canadian". Canadian authorities were not sure that she had ever lost her Canadian citizenship, given her passport status, but her request was approved and she officially became a Canadian citizen.
On May 29, 1979, Pickford died at a Santa Monica, California, hospital of complications from a cerebral hemorrhage she had suffered the week before. She was interred in the Garden of Memory of the Forest Lawn Memorial Park cemetery in Glendale, California.

The Fashionable Pop Music Sounds Rubbish But Nonetheless It Is The Most Profitable Genre Why
Initially of last month, an impressive assortment of standard music entitled Now That's What I Call Music! 9. The 60s !1960: Pete Greatest joins the Beatles, The group invited Pete Greatest tobecome their drummer on 12 August 1960. 4 days after hiringBest, the group left for Hamburg. The Beatles started a 48-nightresidency in Hamburg at Bruno Koschmiders Indra Club.1961: American country singer Patsy Cline becomes a mainstreampop music hit.Cline was the first feminine vocalist who adapted to thechange and have become a profitable pop singer.Ziggy Marley is born: David Nesta "Ziggy" Marley (born October 17,1968, Trenchtown, Jamaica) is a 4-time Grammy-winningJamaican musician and chief of the band Ziggy Marley and theMelody makers. Canada has an extended custom of singer-songwriters and that's partly in because of its own folksong laureate", Gordon Lightfoot. Coming out of the Toronto 60s folks music scene, Lightfoot's native country would become his lifelong muse, penning such classics as ‘Canadian Railroad Trilogy' and ‘Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' and yet common sufficient to appeal worldwide, turning him into Canada's most profitable modern people artist. A beloved cultural icon, he's been the beneficiary of numerous awards and honours together with the Companion of the Order of Canada - Canada's highest civilian honour. Other issues are actually extra speaking factors than criticisms. What's of a greater worth, an overview or the near microhistory of one thing like Jon Savage's 1966: The yr music exploded. You want each after all, although the hazard with a survey is that it may possibly seem to shape history to its narrative. So for instance Andrew Loog Oldham was instrumental in getting the Stones rolling, however they didn't suffer as a result of leaving him as instructed here. They want on to report their biggest albums, and a number of the greatest in the style. I exaggerate, of course. No historical past can wholly keep away from classes. But Ross's place to begin is novel all the same. In Paul Griffiths's "Concise History of Trendy Music" (1978), fashionable music begins with the delicious flute solo that opens Claude Debussy's "Pr¿lude ¿ l'apr¿s-midi d'un faune" (1894), simply as for Griffiths the theories of Boulez (who first touted the idea of Debussy as founding father of modernism) are the important thing to music since World Warfare II. But Ross makes gentle, to not say enjoyable, of the "pseudoscientific mentality" of the Darmstadt summer colleges in Germany, the place Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen held court within the early '50s, "researching" ever more cerebral ways of writing music. Instead of Debussy, he opens twentieth-century music with the Austrian premiere in Graz in 1906 of Richard Strauss's "Salome," a piece subsequently admired for its daring and also hated for its vulgarity. As for "bad" pop, for me, there are multiple reasons. When you may have a first-tier pop artist they usually deliver a dud at the start of their album cycle (Ed Sheeran), that's an unforced error. There is also earwormy songs that quickly become tiresome, the "MmmBop"s and "Shots"s of the world, that start out annoying and get an increasing number of annoying the more it airs. Some music is just shit, there is not rather more you possibly can say about it. "Battle Track" is a pile of garbage, however it has found its area of interest viewers (divorce parties; ineffective political campaigns). More than 230 music genres is still too abundant to create a comprehensible structure that permits straightforward orientation. The necessity for a overlaying framework is a matter that can be addressed in this chapter. Certain (although few) visual genealogies choose not to implement such framework, and don't (or vaguely) display clusters of associated music genres. When coping with quite detailed genealogies similar to musicmap, omitting a visible framework would seriously hurt any sensible use the map may need. Thankfully, this framework already exists as almost all genres belong to higher, properly-known areas" in the musical community, what we will name super-genres. Super-genres are merely the mum or dad style of any given style; the next-level, overarching family. Pop music is the style of standard music that produces the most hits. Successful is a tune that sells many copies, and the latest hits are listed every week on the charts. To get on the charts, a music must be released as a single, magicaudiotools.com although most singles are additionally launched on an album. Songs that become hits almost at all times share sure features which might be generally known as the pop-music formulation. They've a very good rhythm, a catchy melody, and are straightforward to remember and sing along to. They usually have a chorus that's repeated a number of times and two or more verses. Most pop songs are between two and 5 minutes lengthy, and the lyrics are usually about the joys and issues of love and relationships. Pop songs are produced by groups like the boy band One Course and the lady group Women' Technology, and by pop singers like Justin Bieber and Madonna. It takes a strong debut track to knock the Queen of Pop, Taylor Swift, off the highest of the pop charts. And that is what Cardi B did with the historically profitable "Bodak Yellow." The swaggering hit marked the primary time a female rapper scored a solo No. 1 song since Lauryn Hill in 1998. It makes complete sense, too, as the music takes Cardi B's no-fucks-given approach to life that made her an Instagram and reality star. If that is not the right encapsulation of in style culture in 2017, then I don't know what's. You will have seen the popular video four Chords" by the Axis of Awesome wherein 4 guys cycle amusingly by means of 50 pop songs in six minutes, interweaving recycled harmonic constructions to nice impact. At any price, you've actually heard these chords earlier than, again and again. Utilizing the Roman numerals of music concept, we could label them I, IV, and V, the bread and butter of the blues, along with the minor chord, vi. In the key of C, that might be C main, F main, G major, and A minor. The 4 chords will be arranged in a number of methods, and the Axis of Awesome make use of this by shuffling by songs which include completely different orderings, using their widespread chords to pivot.
Tumblr media
Based on a crack group of Spanish philistines (using a complex snarkhive referred to as the Million Music Dataset), over the previous 55 years there has been "a progressive homogenization of the musical discourse." Which means transitions between combos of notes and chords has diminished: songs have much less modifications in them, and are less completely different from one another. As well as, the researchers used sophisticated algorithms to prove that pop music has change into considerably louder than it was in the course of the first half of the twentieth century, as record producers ramp up the quantity throughout the recording process.

This period is actually often the renaissance regarding American animation, where numerous large American amusement businesses reform and reinvigorate the animation department following the drop suffered in the sixty, 70 and 80.

Through 1988 to the existing
Disney's come back
In the actual mid 80's, the particular United states animation industry dropped in to disgrace. Toy advertisements masking as entertainment applications toons dominated the night as well as the morning of Weekend, and the only test had been carried out through independent developers. Actually cartoon films were expected within theaters at times, however the glory of the aged days has been gone. Along with great excitement, in 1988 the research worked well with Steven Spielberg to create the animated film Who else Framed Roger Rabbit, aimed by Robert Zemeckis. The actual film was a achievement, in addition to gave to often the animation business awaited press for that period. Roger Rabbit not only gained him a pile connected with money with regard to Disney, however also sparked nice associated with the classic animation which is constantly on the this day. The particular history of computer animation all of a sudden became an object regarding study (and their fans). Several directors, business story, such as Chuck Smith as well as Friz Freleng had been abruptly in the limelight, being recognized after years of being practically overlooked by audiences and also market professionals.

The studio room spent heavily in fresh technology connected with computer cartoon for this kind of purposes, yet could perform super-productions such as "Beauty as well as the Beast" along with "Aladdin, inch which drawn audiences which were not observed in decades, and when supplied a visual feast which has not been exceeded because the 40. The peak associated with the strike Disney ended up being in 1994 whenever his or her film "The Big cat King" exceeded all anticipation regarding the study to turn out to be probably the most successful of almost all time. Even later on Disney films as "Pocahontas, inches "The Hunchback involving Notre Dame", "Hercules, very well "Mulan" and "Tarzan" seemed to be blockbusters.
Disney has also created inroads into the ignored part of the animated TV collection. With the accomplishment connected with shows like "The Brand new Adventures of Winnie typically the Pooh", "The Activities associated with the Gummi Bears Disney" and "Duck adventures", often the "new" Disney made the mark in TV photos. Through association and repeating, Disney can provide higher quality movement for TELEVISION. A series of big diffusion was conducted inside mid-nineties, with some pundits designating "Gargoyles" as the actual Disney toon project regarding TV's the majority of ambitious in addition to best done nicely. Typically the soundtracks of each of those animated films were a part of its success, simply because Disney was including throughout each of these tasks a noisy voice through the world of songs, such as Elton Steve (The Lion King), Luis Miguel (The Hunchback regarding Notre Dame), Ricky Charlie (Hercules), Christina Aguilera (Mulan), Celine Dion (Beauty as well as the Beast), Ricardo Montaner (Aladin), Jon Secada (Pocahontas), among others.
Spielberg and also animation
Spielberg along with Bluth
While Disney offered brand-new life to computer animation, Steven Spielberg was creating his / her own way. Animation novice life, Spielberg was additionally interested in making large quality cartoon, and proved helpful with his competitor, Wear Bluth animation maker to be able to produce "Fievel and the particular " new world ". " The package office good results of this particular and Bluth's following movie, "In The Land", Showmanship made him understand that Disney did not hold any monopoly on animated functions. The other Hollywood galleries started again production of it has the own computer animated features, nevertheless still falling in to the snare of trying to replicate Disney's 1997 film Put on Bluth, "Anastasia", produced simply by Sibel, is mentioned because the 1 launched typically the Fox Computer animation Studios in addition to Disney's opponent, however, these types of studies still did not succeed right after "Anastasia" as well as closed with 1999. Like most effective productions of Disney, "Anastasia" was attended by Thalia, who played the main theme of the soundtrack in the versions in The spanish language, British and Portuguese.
Spielberg and also Warner Bros.
Spielberg, at the same time, switched to TV SET along with worked with movement studio Warner Bros. for you to produce "The Small Anime Adventures, " a top quality living series that compensated respect to the great shows of Termite Terrace. "The Tiny Toon Adventures" experienced a good rating many thanks to the young audiences, which influenced the Warner Bros to help resurrect their dying toon studio in addition to once again a competitor in the field involving animation. The production obtained away of hand and finished up being significantly belittled and forgotten by simply nearly everyone.
Outsourcing animation
The primary reason for increasing the high quality of Us animation will be the ability to delegate the heavy lifting for you to cheaper animation houses within the South and Southeast Asian countries gaining a large quantity of frames from lower cost. The script, personality design and storyboarding is completed in American offices. Often the storyboard, models and colour books are mailed overseas. Sometimes causes problems due to the fact no final product could be completed until the structures tend to be mailed to the particular U. H.. Although finances have been decreased, overseas productions houses are usually selected per episode, and even for each scene, depending on typically the sum of money available at that will time. As a outcome there exists a big difference within quality in one episode to help another. This is especially evident in shows just like "Gargoyles" and "Batman": The actual Animated Series where, occasionally, the characters seem very different from one episode in order to the grieve of it is directors.

" Also, Harvey Birdman, attorney, on any mediocre super-hero, Birdman that was originally typically the celebrity of Birdman and also Universe trio had become an attorney. Its customers, like most of the characters in the set, emerged completely from outdated Hanna-Barbera characters.
In inclusion to large computer animation documents old and inexpensive, self-employed animators also started to advantage from new digital technology. An artist with adequate technical skills could discover new styles and types with much more independence. The standard animation skills associated with sketching and painting got provided way to electronic manipulation along with aggressive utilize new methods of cartoon.
Along with these kinds of completely new programs, the Usa viewers, particularly in geographic places influenced by blend together with the cultures of often the Pacific cycles coast, began to be able to adopt Japan cartoon, or even anime, eighty. Inspired by the Olympic speed skating champions Québec has fostered like Gaétan Boucher and Robert Dubreuil, the new Centre de Glaces is primed to inspire movement in Canadians, aspiring and established athletes alike. With a 400-metre oval speed skating track and two Olympic-sized ice rinks, one for short-track speed skating and the other for ice sports like figure skating and hockey, this bold ice sports complex of elegant and restrained designs from Lemay is the largest of its kind in North America and the first on the eastern seaboard.
The oval structure is composed of fluid and continuous forms that reflect the speed, dynamism, balance, and skill of a skater gliding on the center’s 13,500 sqm of ice. As a compliment to a well-loved outdoor community skating rink, the Centre de glaces features the adaptive gesture of a floating ring which lifts the entire volume of its perimeter envelope high enough to create a 360-degree band of windows at eye-level. In doing so, the interior and rolling landscape that encircles the building become interconnected, only separated by a wall of glass that merges being seen with seeing.
“By focusing on absolute transparency, we have decompartmentalized the space to open it up to the community, connecting skaters to the outside world,” said Eric Pelletier, architect, senior partner and design principal at Lemay.
This visual democratization of the Centre de glaces’ activities is maintained through the elevation of its bleachers by placing them on a higher mezzanine with an integrated multimedia banner for indoor projections.
Layers like these present an elegant solution for the concealment of mechanical services, allowing for a better appreciation of the sleek minimalism found throughout the environment.
An expression of Lemay’s commitment to northern design, the Centre de glaces promotes wellness and embraces Canada’s nordicity by enticing movement no matter the time of year through the inclusion of two running tracks. One follows the periphery of the ice indoors and is complimented by a second that encircles the complex with rising and falling mounds, allowing for multiple viewpoints along the building’s outer envelope of cut-outs and projections with a metallic skin that shines and fades as ice does.
Locals and visitors from abroad have already begun to connect skates to the ice of this achievement in architecture and design fit for the blades of Canada’s Olympians. Meanwhile, onlookers can watch from either the luminous hall or a lofty mezzanine seat a few meters away from the ice, projecting them into the heart of the action at major speed skating competitions, hockey tournaments, and other events.

Telesat raising $500 million in debt for Lightspeed broadband network

Telesat raising $500 million in debt for Lightspeed broadband network
Tumblr media
TAMPA, Fla. — Canadian satellite operator Telesat plans to raise $500 million with a bond to help fund its $5 billion Lightspeed broadband constellation.
The senior secured notes due 2026 will be issued around April 27 as part of a debt package that will fund 60% of the project’s cost, with the remaining 40% financed through equity.
Dan Goldberg, Telesat’s CEO, told a session of the Satellite 2021 LEO Digital Forum April 6 that he expects to complete Lightspeed’s financing “in the next couple of months.”
The company is also close to finalizing plans to start launching the constellation of nearly 300 satellites from next year. It has early launch arrangements with Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and 3D printing specialist Relativity Space. Neither company has conducted an orbital launch.
Europe’s Thales Alenia Space is building the low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites in a $3 billion contract, including network management software and gateway integration.
As part of plans to fund the multibillion-dollar constellation, Telesat said Nov. 24 it will form a new Canadian company to list shares on the Nasdaq stock exchange in the third quarter of 2021.
Telesat is combining with Loral Space & Communications, a major shareholder that already trades on the Nasdaq.
Loral and Canadian pension fund manager PSP Investments are Telesat’s largest shareholders, after buying the company in 2007 for about $3 billion in a leveraged buyout deal.
Telesat has also said it is considering debt financing from an export-credit agency (ECA), which used to be prevalent in the commercial space industry before bonds and other financing alternatives rose to the fore.
Meanwhile, the company has been receiving strong government support to develop Lightspeed.
Canada’s federal government awarded Telesat 600 million Canadian dollars in funding in November to provide subsidized broadband services to rural communities in the country.
Separately, Quebec’s provincial government said Feb. 18 it will invest 400 million Canadian dollars in Lightspeed, and Canadian space hardware maker MDA, to build the network’s phased array antennas. The Quebec government is splitting its investment between equity in Telesat and a loan to the company.
Telesat expects Lightspeed will start offering services in 2023, putting it behind other broadband megaconstellations Starlink and OneWeb.
However, the company plans to leverage its existing geosynchronous (GEO) satellite network, and the expertise gained during five decades in business.
Telesat’s fleet comprises 15 GEO satellites, one LEO test spacecraft and a Canadian payload on U.S.-based operator Viasat’s ViaSat-1.
Unlike megaconstellation frontrunner Starlink, which has 1,378 satellites in orbit, Lightspeed will not provide consumer broadband services. It will focus on markets including backhaul services for mobile network operators and internet service providers, aeronautical and maritime connectivity, and government customers.
Telesat’s new bond carries a 5.625% coupon, which is the annual interest payment that its holder receives from the bond’s issue date until it matures.
The debt prompted Moody’s Investors Service, the ratings agency, to downgrade the operator’s corporate family rating (CFR) by one notch to B2 from B1.
Peter Adu, Moody’s vice president and senior analyst, said it downgraded the company because the bond will change its ratio of debt to adjusted EBITDA, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, from 5.1 times 2020 earnings to 6.1 times earnings.
Moody’s rates about $3.5 billion of Telesat’s debt. The satellite operator recorded 653 million Canadian dollars ($511 million) in adjusted EBITDA for 2020, a 14% decrease compared with 2019 as COVID-19 weighed on the business.
The ratings agency said Telesat remains on review for another downgrade as it expects further changes in its debt to EBITDA ratio amid Lightspeed’s construction.
However, it also noted how Telesat’s $2.7 billion Canadian in contract backlog gives it a predictable revenue stream over the next 12-18 months. Plans to monetize the company’s C-band spectrum, for terrestrial wireless use in U.S. and Canada, also boost the company’s future outlook.

Leaving On A Trip? Use These Travel Tips!
Traveling is something we all do from time to time. It is often essential for both business and pleasure. Making traveling easier is a goal that many of us have. In this article we will discuss a few tips for making your next travel experience an easier one.
Avoid crowds and save money by visiting in the off-season. If you want to be able to enjoy your vacation without having to battle a crowd of people everywhere you go, learn when the popular months are for the location and plan your vacation for the less popular time. Be aware, canadian immigration consultant  while it can save you money, in some locations you may have to contend with less than ideal weather.
As you plan your trip, pick a digital camera that really suits your needs. You likely don't want a camera with a rechargeable battery if you're backpacking. You want a camera you can turn off and on quickly and that focuses fast.
If you are staying at a lower-cost or no-name hotel when traveling, never put your bag on the bed. Be sure to check the sheet and spreads for bugs. If you must take your clothing out of your luggage, hang it in the closet instead of putting in the dresser or onto the furniture. Bedbugs are a major problem in North American hotels.
Tumblr media
If you are traveling on a budget, make use of the in-room amenities to cook your own food. The coffee maker that is usually provided in even the cheapest hotel rooms can double as a hot plate. You can heat plain water in the carafe for ramen or soup, or use the hot plate itself to make bacon.
It's always time well spent to insure you have critical items with you on your trip. Make a list and check it twice! If the item that you have forgotten in your irreplaceable medicine or perhaps some critical piece of electronics, however, you're in trouble! Plan ahead to insure this doesn't happen to you!
If you are traveling by air, it is vital that you remember to drink enough water. Travel is stressful, and the running around can deplete your body of water. The recirculated air on airplanes and in most airports will further dehydrate you. Buy a refillable water bottle after you go through security to help with hydration.
If you plan to travel with children it is best to think ahead. Kids are not the easiest to vacation with and will need quite a few entertainment tools to keep them happy. canadian immigration consulatant in toronto. If you make a list in advance, you will know exactly what to bring when you travel.
There are many large families that would like to travel to popular vacation destinations, but are afraid they cannot afford it. You can book trips with time sharing and save money each year by already having the lodging. If you plan trips when gas prices are low, you will also save money on your travel expenses.
Keep your wallet in your front pocket, and wrap a rubber band around it. Both of these tactics will allow you to feel if someone is attempting to steal your wallet. Keeping it in your front pocket is a big deterrence anyway, because it is more difficult for you to be distracted.
When traveling long distances by car, you can save a lot of money by staying at campgrounds as opposed to hotels. A tent site will cost on average $20 per night, and usually includes facilities & most likely a camp store. Camping guides can be found for free at most rest stops and travel information centers.
If you are traveling on a cruise ship, take a fishing tackle box with you. Put all your valuable jewelry in it; someone who is trying to steal from you probably will not look in it. Tackle boxes even have small compartments that allow you to store earrings or rings as well as larger areas for other jewelry.
When you are traveling on a cruise ship, wear your key as a necklace. It is easy to leave your key laying around while you are at the pool or in another area of the ship. This compromises the security of your room, so consider attaching your key to a necklace and wearing around your neck.
If you travel with many electronics pack a power strip. Though hotels have electrical outlets available it is not uncommon for each person to have 2 or 3 items that need to be charged every night. A power strip can keep the cords relegated to one area instead of strewn all over the room.
If you will be driving when you travel to another country, take the time to contact your insurance carrier. They can give you any needed documentation that pertains to your insurance coverage, any additional insurance you may need and much needed advice or information about regulations for driving at your destination.
Make sure that you take enough prescription medication to last for the entire trip anytime you travel. You should always take some extra meds with you, just in case you are delayed or get stranded somewhere, for a long period of time. Bring your medication information along with you, as well, in case you need to get more from a pharmacy.
When going on a car trip, make sure that you treat it like any other drive and wear your seat belt. Also make sure anybody traveling with you wears theirs too. Things can still happen on a trip that can harm you or other people while driving. Road safety doesn't take a vacation.
Traveling is essential for business and pleasure as well. It can sometimes be difficult to navigate airports, figure routes for car travel, or even understand a bus schedule. So how do you make travel easier, and more enjoyable too? In this article we have provided a few tips that can help. We hope they will prove successful the next time you decide to travel.

Modern American Animation
Tumblr media
This article depicts the historical backdrop of movement in the United States of America since the last part of the 80's until the mid twenty-first century. This period is frequently called the renaissance of American 3d animation  liveliness, during which numerous huge American amusement organizations change and revive its activity division after the decrease endured in the 60, 70 and 80.
Disney's return
During the 80's, the American activity industry fell into disrespect. Toy ads taking on the appearance of amusement programs kid's shows overwhelmed the night and the morning of Saturday, and the solitary analysis was completed by free designers. Indeed, even vivified films were projected in venues now and again, yet the wonder of the days of yore was no more. Indeed, even the liveliness goliath Disney, which had battled a corporate securing during the 80's, was thinking about deserting the creation of energized highlight films.
Both the eager crowd, pundits, and the artists were overwhelmed when the hotly anticipated renaissance of activity started in the most established and most traditionalist organization, Disney.
Disney had an uncommon change in the 80, its new boss Michael Eisner the organization moved to his feet, getting back to its underlying foundations and renewing their examinations. With incredible flourish, in 1988 the examination worked with Steven Spielberg to deliver the energized movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit, coordinated by Robert Zemeckis. The film was a triumph, and provided for the liveliness business anticipated push for that time. Roger Rabbit not just brought in him a heap of cash for Disney, yet additionally started the notoriety of the exemplary activity that proceeds right up 'til today. The historical backdrop of liveliness abruptly turned into an object of study (and their fans). A few chiefs, business legend, for example, Chuck Jones and Friz Freleng were unexpectedly at the center of attention, being acclaimed following quite a while of being practically disregarded by crowds and industry experts.
Disney proceeded with the accomplishment of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? with "The Little Mermaid", the first of a progression of vivified films that appeared to recover the sorcery of the brilliant time of Walt Disney himself. The studio put vigorously in new innovation of PC movement for such purposes, yet could do super-creations like "Magnificence and the Beast" and "Aladdin," which pulled in crowds that were not found in many years, and Once gave a visual banquet that has not been surpassed since the 40. The pinnacle of the hit Disney was in 1994 when his film "The Lion King" surpassed all assumptions for the investigation to get quite possibly the best ever. Significantly later Disney films as "Pocahontas," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Hercules," "Mulan" and "Tarzan" was blockbusters.
Disney has likewise made advances into the ignored zone of the vivified TV arrangement. With the achievement of shows like "The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh", "The Adventures of the Gummi Bears Disney" and "Duck undertakings", the "new" Disney positively influenced TV pictures. Through affiliation and reiteration, Disney can give top notch activity to TV. A progression of huge dissemination was directed in mid-nineties, for certain pundits assigning "Foreboding figures" as the Disney liveliness project for TV's generally goal-oriented and best done masterfully. The soundtracks of every one of these energized films were a significant piece of its prosperity, since Disney was remembering for every one of these tasks a boisterous voice from the universe of music, for example, Elton John (The Lion King), Luis Miguel (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), Ricky Martin (Hercules), Christina Aguilera (Mulan), Celine Dion (Beauty and the Beast), Ricardo Montaner (Aladin), Jon Secada (Pocahontas), among others.
Spielberg and liveliness
Spielberg and Bluth
While Disney gave new life to liveliness, Steven Spielberg was making his own specific manner. Liveliness beginner life, Spielberg was likewise keen on making great movement, and worked with his opponent, Don Bluth activity maker to create "Fievel and the New World." The movies accomplishment of this and Bluth's next film, "In The Land", Hollywood caused him to understand that Disney didn't hold a syndication on energized highlights. The other Hollywood studios continued creation of its own vivified highlights, yet falling into the snare of attempting to impersonate Disney's 1997 film Don Bluth, "Anastasia", delivered by Fox, is referenced as the one dispatched the Fox Animation Studios and Disney's opponent, in any case, these examinations neglected to prevail after "Anastasia" and shut in 1999. Like best creations of Disney, "Anastasia" was gone to by Thalia, who played the focal topic of the soundtrack in its adaptations in Spanish, English and Portuguese.
Spielberg and Warner Bros.
Spielberg, then, changed to TV and worked with liveliness studio Warner Bros. to deliver "The Tiny Toon Adventures," a top notch energized arrangement that gave recognition to the incredible sketch of Termite Terrace. "The Tiny Toon Adventures" had a decent appraising gratitude to its young watchers, which propelled the Warner Bros to revive his withering liveliness studio and indeed a competitor in the field of movement. The Tiny Toon Steven Spielberg were proceeded by introducing "Animaniacs" and "Pinky and the Brain". The last pulled in new watchers to Warner Bros., yet additionally caught the consideration of watchers young people and grown-ups.
Bakshi's return
Ralph Bakshi, overseer of imaginative energized films like "Fritz the Cat" and unique "Master of the Rings", got back to liveliness subsequent to making a concise stop during the 80's. In 1985, he collaborated with the youthful Canadian artist John Kricfalusi and the amazing British band "The Rolling Stones" to make an enlivened music video for "The Harlem Shuffle", which was finished in mid 1986. Despite the fact that the music video didn't talk a lot, he assembled a creation group "Bakshi Animation" project proceeded with the fleeting yet generally welcomed, "The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse." Bakshi and Co, chipped away at various ventures toward the finish of the 80, yet the greatest task was "Cool World: a blonde between two universes", which debuted in 1992. The creation turned crazy and wound up being seriously scrutinized and failed to remember by nearly everybody.
Rethinking liveliness
The primary explanation behind expanding the nature of American movement is the capacity to reevaluate the hard work to less expensive activity houses in the South and Southeast Asia picking up countless edges with ease. The content, character plan and storyboarding is done in American workplaces. The storyboard, models and shading books are sent abroad. Now and again causes issues on the grounds that no end result can be finished until the edges are sent to the U.S.. In spite of the fact that financial plans have been diminished, unfamiliar creations houses are picked per scene, or even per scene, contingent upon the measure of cash accessible around then. Accordingly there is a major distinction in quality starting with one scene then onto the next. This is especially clear in shows like "Figures of grotesqueness" and "Batman": The Animated Series where, once in a while, the characters appear to be totally unique in relation to one scene to the disappointment of its chiefs.
Grown-up Animation
The Simpsons
In the 90's came another influx of energized arrangement whose essential point was the grown-ups, after a nonappearance in the class longer than 10 years. In 1989, "The Simpsons," an energized short dependent on "The Tracey Ullman Show," turned into the principal vivified arrangement in early evening since "The Flintstones" and dazzled an enormous piece of the crowd. It was the principal hit arrangement for the youngster Fox, caused little affectability, entering mainstream society and picking up wide acknowledgment. In 2008, "The Simpsons" appear to give no indications of halting, and could outperform "Gunsmoke" as the fiction program on the air longer the historical backdrop of American TV. In 2007 have delivered their first film, named "The Simpsons: The Movie", named in Spanish and Chinese.
Ren and Stimpy
In 1991, Nickelodeon debuted "The Ren and Stimpy Show," "Ren and Stimpy" was an idiosyncratic arrangement gone out of control disregarded all the customary limitations of right drawings of Saturday morning and rather preferred the particular style of the short the brilliant time. Besides, the arrangement maker, John Kricfalusi, who had functioned as an artist during the plunge of Saturday morning, was greatly impacted by the exemplary works of Bob Clampett.
Spike and Mike
Close by standard liveliness nineties there was a bizarre and test development. In a short activity celebration in 1989, coordinated by Craig Decker and Mike Gribble Spike (known as "Spike and Mike") and initially situated in San Diego. Everything began with the portrayal of an assortment of topical short, known as the Classic Festival of Animation, in business environments gatherings and exchange all through the nation.
The assortments were made generally by Oscar-selected short, works of understudies of the Institute of the Arts in California and trial work of the National Film Board of Canada. The primary celebration included works by John Lasseter, Nick Park and Mike Judge. Judge's work, "Frog Baseball" denoted the primary appearance of their establishment characters Beavis and Butthead.

In any case, the celebration progressively turned into a film program called Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation and transformed into an underground development of grown-up humor and topic. To know more visit the official website http://bit.ly/2XeuwKz

KBUNBURYHELPS FC SUGGESTIONS: DARK SKIN BLACK FEMALES
So the rpc keeps playing like dark skinned black actresses don’t exist and when they decide to acknowledge them it’s really just Ryan Destiny and recently China Anne McClain (mainly due to Descendants 2 and the announcement of Black Lightning which I’m super excited for but I digress) which is great but like they are not your only sources of dark skin females. Then again, more than half of y’all still using only Zendaya(who I love and would love to be her best friend but dang y’all) to stand for all black characters. Get your life. Anyway for all who know about color and all that, the word dark skin is so subjective and it’s hard to categorize just so you know before attacking my inbox about how ‘they aren’t really dark’. I personally don’t consider them that dark but they are darker than the majority of what the rpc currently uses. Dark to a Sudanese person might not be the same dark to a South African or a West African or to a person from the Islands. You get the point.. I was mainly just going to do an under 30′s list but the rpc likes them young (which sounds super creepy when I say it like that but am I lying?) and yet still plays Ian Somerhalder as a high schooler so I don’t even know. If you haven’t realize yet, this intro is trash and you’ll be better off just going to the names already. Sit down. Take several seats. Be Humble. Gif them, love them, use them. I shouldn’t have to say this but please look up their exact identities and don’t erase them.
NOTE: If you’re only going to use these females to push stereotypes about dark skinned women, just scroll on past. Yeah, keep going, it’s a long post. We have enough issues, don’t need you adding to them. If you need to know what stereotypes to avoid, use google. Have a nice day. AGAIN DO NOT USE TO PUSH DARK SKIN BLACK WOMEN STEREOTYPES.
NOTE: For the love of all that is good and holy and pure in this world, do not whitewash them. You can miss me with that ‘it’s for the aesthetics’ ish. AGAIN DO NOT WHITEWASH.
China Anne McClain: Turning 19 this year (1998). Aye my girl, you guys might know her from ANT Farm and Descendants 2. It actually pains me to say that because you should all remember her from House of Payne and Daddy’s Little Girls (with Idris) but whatever. Anyway gifs of her are probably all coming from Descendants but she’ll also be in Black Lightning and hopefully someone will gif it.
CoCo Jones: Turned 19 this year (1998). Another of throwbacks. She’s an actress, singer, and songwriter. She was on So Random! and this year acted in the movie Grandma’s House and is recording some movie called Flock of Four. Don’t know if she’s giffed, don’t think so.
Diamond White: Turned 18 this year (1999). Not that well known but she should be. She was in a YoutTube Red show called Guidance and Sing It! She also acted in a movie called Boo! A Madea Halloween 1 and is currently filming  #2 of Boo! A Madea Halloween. @casshelps bless her, has giffed her,
Imani Hakim: Turned 24 this year (1993). Throwback to anyone, this girl is known for her role as Tasha on Everybody Hates Chris. As of this year, she has recently acted in Burning Sands and some short called The Dissection of Jack & Jill. Definitely doubt if she’s been giffed.
Keke Palmer: Turning 24 this year (1993). Very well known for a lot of roles but especially as Akeelah in Akeelah and the Bee, True Jackson in True Jackson V.P., and Zayday Williams in Scream Queens. There aren’t that many recent gif packs of her but have no fear I’ve giffed her.
Lovie Simone: Turning 19 this year (1998). Not well known, just started acting last year. She’s been acting in Greenleaf and was in an episode of Orange Is The New Black. She is also filming a movie this year. She’s been giffed but only in gif sets and I’m pretty sure all but one have text.
Ryan Destiny: Turned 22 this year (1995). Started becoming big the year Star came out. Acted in a movie called A Girl Like Grace and of course known for Star. I’ve giffed her, many people have giffed her.
Raven Goodwin: Turned 25 this year (1992). Should be known for her role as Teddy’s best friend on Good Luck Charlie but honestly, I don’t know what y’all watch. She’s currently on Being Mary Jane which really, does that mean anything to you people? Like do you know of these shows? I’ve seen a gif pack of her from Good Luck Charlie.
Need More suggestions? Look under the cut for more beautiful women.
The names below this cut are more suggestions that I just didn’t feel like making another graphic for but knowing my procrastination skills, I probably will end up doing. Anyway, their pictures are linked with their names which is why their names are italicized.
Mouna Traore: Age unknown. She’s a Canadian actress. Not well known in the U.S. but she’s acted in The Murdoch Mysteries and Hemlock Grove. For the record, I did gif her so some gifs of her do exist.
Sierra Aylina McClain: Turned 23 this year (1994). She is the older sister of China Anne McClain and honestly should be just as famous and popular. She’s also known for Daddy’s Little Girls. She is currently playing Nessa on Empire and will be in Honey 4. Let’s be real the peope who gif Empire gif like 4 people so I don’t doubt there not being that many gifs of her.
Lauryn Alisa McClain: Turned 20 this year (1997). Honestly hasn’t been on tv recently as much as her sisters but was in BearCity3 (2016). Known for Daddy’s Little Girls and mainly known for composing. I don’t think I’ve seen gifs of her.
Tanyell Waivers: Age unknown. She’s an actress who isn’t well known because she got her first acting gig in Queen Sugar and so far that’s it I think. I did gif her, but the gifs I made of her suck so I may redo them. Or y’all can request gifs of her to makers who have gif packs open, use her.
Denee Benton: Turning 25 this year (1992). She’s an actress both Broadway and stage but mainly Broadway. On Broadway she’s been in The Book of Morman and Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 and on tv she’s only been in UnReal. I will be giffing her eventually in UnReal, at least in some of the episodes she appears in. Girl has been nominated for a Tony Award so obviously she should be used.
Reiya Downs: Turning 18 this year (1999). She’s known for Degrassi Next Class, she has a little sister who looks just like her and is also acting. She’s adorable and for all your ‘actually looks like a highschooler’ needs. I honestly don’t know if anyone gifs her in Degrassi but they should.
Camille Winbush: Turned 27 this year (1990). You may recognize her from the Bernie Mac Show (R.I.P). She’s known for the Secret Life of the American Teenager and even then I don’t know if she’s that well known. Other than acting in The Choir recently, she’s mainly filming two movies this year named Everything But a Man and Bachelor Lions. I have personally giffed her a bit.
Yindra Zayas: Turning 23 this year (1994). You may or may not recognize her but if you watch Girl Meets World you really should. She plays one of the background filler students who occasionally does something. Literally most of her IMDB she goes uncredited ‘cause she’s that much away from a main character. But this girl doesn’t even look her age. I highly doubt there’s that many gifs of her, if any.
Stefanee Martin: She’s 26 that’s all I know about her age. If you watched The Get Down then you definitely recognize her, even if The Get Down has come across your dash a couple times you probably still recognize her. She plays Yolanda, other than The Get Down there’s not much past acting experience. She is filming a movie called Skin in the Game. I’m sure there are some gifs of her, probably more gif sets than packs though.
Asha Bromfield: According to riverdale wiki she’s turning 23 this year (1994). If you think Riverdale is her first acting role then you’re dead wrong but it is probably her biggest or one of it. She did act in The Gabby Douglas Story (along with Imani Hakim) but I don’t know how many people watched that. I’m not sure if there are gifs of her at all.
Karidja Touré: Turned 23 this year (1994). She’s a French actress, possibly why you haven’t heard of her but she did make a big break in 2014 in Girlhood aka Bande de filles. She didn’t act again until this year where she’s been in more french movies. You’re probably thinking, but why would I suggest her if she’s not really known, girl probably doesn’t have gifs. That’s where you’re wrong. Right here you can find enough gifs for using her as a faceclaim. What’s your excuse now. Bless @casshelps again.
Nafessa Williams: Turning 28 this year (1989). I’m only featuring her because I’ve talked about Black Lightning so much I might as well add her. She’s known for her role in One Life to Live. She’s also acted in Burning Sands and will be acting in Black Lightning. Look at this point I’ve hyped up this show so much it literally cannot/should not let me down. No idea if she’s been giffed but again with Black Lightning coming out I hope to God someone will gif her.
Don’t like my other suggestions check my page. Checked there and want other suggestions but don’t know where to look? Use IMDB, check your popular shows. They might not be main actresses but usually there’s a darker skin’d female that’s played a side or very background character. Check Oprah shows, Tyler Perry Movies or Shows, black stations like BET…. well (some of y’all know what that well means, if you don’t, don’t worry about it). Look at Soap Opera’s they’re more diverse than I bet you give them credit for. Look at shows and movies from popular services that have black people as main characters (gasp yes black people as main characters do exist outside of BET) like Netflix’s Dear White People and the original movie or Burning Sand. Check IMDB lists, I can’t tell you how many imdb lists there are of dark skinned black actresses of all ages, even of just black actresses.
If you find no faceclaims after doing all of that, then you don’t want to play a dark skinned black female in the first place and please don’t use some stupid excuse. Don’t bother.
AGAIN DO NOT USE TO PUSH DARK SKIN WOMEN STEREOTYPES. DO NOT WHITEWASH. I really shouldn’t have to repeat it but I know that’s the only way some of you will listen.

Assignment 12 First Draft: I’m Scared And You Should Be Too
The chapter starts with a quote by Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, who said “No country would find 173 billion barrels of oil in the ground and just leave them there” (Lewis and Maslin 368). I wondered, why not? Why are we so conditioned to just continue to take and take with the assumption that because no human has laid their claim on it, that we have the right to take it? It seems unjust to me that we find ourselves so superior to all other life on earth.
This chapter outlines that there are “three possible futures: continued development of the consumer capitalist mode of living towards greater complexity; a collapse; or a new mode of living” (Lewis and Maslin 2018, 369). I personally hope we choose the third route, since the first one is unsustainable for our lives to continue, and the second implies death of the human race. The third option implies that what we spend our time doing would effectively change, and so would our planetary impacts.
Business as Usual
Historically, human societies have been adaptive to change, and this leads the authors to believe that we will continue with business as usual, relying on innovation and technological advancement to save us from the inconvenience of change. The book cites three major reason why the current mode of living is unlikely to continue:
Positive feedback loops (problems building on more problems) drive the current system and end in fundamental changes.
The energy, information and collective human agency factors that underlie all human societies are changing at exponential rates.
There are core environmental challenges which may cause collapse.
The second reason stands out prominently. The world is more interconnected now than it has ever been, and it is easier for communication to have a farther reach. This suggests that greater numbers of people are able to take collective action than at any other time in history, and collective action often incites change. With more people and more connection, more ideas are produced. However, the ideas being produced currently are those which allow us to continue to live how we want to with no environmental consequence. These are ideas like green energy, which are meant to provide an infinite source of energy for people to continue consuming. Consumption is inherently unsustainable and can cause collapse at high levels. These are the consequences of the exponential growth we are experiencing.
Collapse?
This begs the question, are we doomed for collapse? It seems that the greater power than humans have across the world, the greater the opportunity for such power to be damaging (Lewis and Maslin 2018, 378). As humans gain power, they also gain access to more technology and resources which have the capacity to ruin us. This is seen with our own country relying on “cheap” fuels to power us and keep us “efficient.” I quote these words because obviously coal is not cheap, when the full costs are considered and the efficiency of our country relies on cheap labor that laborers rarely reap the benefits of.
The book suggests that this is not even our biggest threat. “The central, pressing, existential threat to human civilization results from a core contradiction in today’s mode of living: it is powered by energy sources that are undermining the ability of today’s globally integrated network of cultures to persist” (Lewis and Maslin 2018, 378). Fossil fuels are considered a trap for progress because of the obstacles their emissions cause: climate change. “The rate and magnitude of climate change are closely correlated with the cumulative emissions of carbon dioxide” (Lewis and Maslin 2018, 379). But it’s not really the CO2 destroying the planet, it’s us. We emit the CO2 and are addicted to fossil fuels. This addiction must cease to exist in order for us to survive.
A huge problem lies in what our leaders are telling us, which is different everywhere. In some places, there is a huge shift to green energy and lowering of individual and collective footprints. In other places, this is a niche “belief” of some sort. It also is confusing when there is no real physical marker for the change, since our leaders are preaching that we limit our atmospheric warming from 1.5ºC to 2ºC. It’s hard to track something we are avoiding, I think. It would be much better for leaders to try and lower the current warming, rather than stick to the status quo. Especially because these proposed metrics are too high in some areas of the world for survival.
But as the chapter shows, event the current proposals are quite hard to reach, and will require “halving global greenhouse gas emissions in every decade going forward, doubling the share of renewables in the energy system every five years, ending deforestation, and reconfiguring agriculture and our diets (so we eat less beef and more plants)” (Lewis and Maslin 2018, 382).
Though we need to ban the use of fossil fuels everywhere, the only part I disagree with here is relying too heavily on green energy, because the configuration and support systems of the current green energy models still rely heavily on fossil fuels. Countries also don’t necessarily want to make the switch to clean energy because it costs more and does the same, if not a worse, job at providing livelihood. Fossil fuels have been long subsidized and these subsidies are hard to lift due to nationalization, that is, the state-owned oil companies make money for the governments that own them. Additionally, this plan overall is highly ambitious and requires all societies “to place the eradication of greenhouse gas emissions at the same level of importance as the pursuit of economic growth” (Lewis and Maslin 2018, 382). I wonder if this is truly possible is our ever growing capitalist society.
It is clear that the mode of living must change to avoid climate change and collapse. Otherwise, human societies will be unable to manage the consequences, and we will die. These consequences include, but are not limited to, food shortage (which will occur as a result of unpredictable climate ruining crops and our GMOs and pesticides have ruined the soil in irreversible ways), unlivable habitats (due to flooding as a result of sea level rise and unbearable heat), and of course civil unrest. The pentagon sees climate change as a threat multiplier, which means that the problems that already exist in our world will be exacerbated on unprecedented levels.
Equality is Necessary
I have long been weary of the communist socialist arguments toward climate change, thinking that agendas are being pushed that are unfavorable. However, I have come to realize that I have been privileged and conditioned to believe that capitalism is good because it has served me. I have been conditioned to believe that more is better.
Capitalism serves this message on a silver platter and has corrupted the human value system. In order to create a new mode of living, equality must exist in a variety of ways. Policies must limit climate change to avoid human suffering; we must focus on the human experience of all people, everywhere, and give value to their lives as well as our own. Everyone should also have access to information and education which will provide a more diverse global community to engage in collective action. Everyone in the global community should have access to healthy food; this should be a basic human right that is focused on more intently because food production currently is unbalanced and results in too much waste.
The unequal balance of economic power has historically favored the progress of the West and worsened the development of the global East. However, both East and West must work together to solve the climate crisis. The West has a larger debt to pay in this task because our emissions make up almost 100% of the emissions in the atmosphere. This was an interesting point since the textbook has repeatedly blamed poverty for rising temperatures. However, the West is hesitant to accept this reality, which presents a great challenge. The West is seemingly dependent on the East for resources, and they have become dependent on us for labor. This codependent relationship, as with any codependent relationship, is toxic and does not benefit either in the long-run. One way to reduce this dependency is with Universal Basic Income (UBI), which supports subsistence needs and covers healthcare. There would be no obligation to work, which would create an increase in autonomy and education. Equality is always a future aspiration, but it really shouldn’t be. We (the west) consume on irrational levels, so much that if global consumption was equal to that of the West, we would essentially be feeding the demand for 32 Billion people; this is impossible.
It doesn’t help that the most comprehensive international document to date, the Paris Climate Agreement, has no clear penalties for countries who do not perform their pledged actions. This is so commonly a reason why nothing ever changes; there are no consequences for the status quo! If the Paris agreement is truly implemented, the world will be transformed in ways that very few people understand or desire. Fossil fuel emissions won’t really be cut to zero, but rather managed in ways that aren’t truly sustainable and put a sort of band aid over the real issues.
The Stories We Tell Ourselves
The current story around climate action is that cutting fossil fuel emissions to zero is all good. However, the proposed methods of doing so are actually quite harmful to biodiversity and only exist to serve human nature. It is a convenient story which allows us to phase out of harmful choices, placing a large amount of ownness on the individual, rather than directly correlating the damage to fossil fuel industries. Using economic solutions to paint a picture of the future is ineffective because people exist in the physical state and numbers exist in the hypothetical. Policy-makers are relying on the economic story that is constantly told, that we have to phase into a greener world, and that story is destructive to progress. It doesn’t accurately highlight the severity of the issues.
Something I also did not agree with in this chapter is the part about the materials revolution. While I think this type of revolution is definitely necessary, it still supports the culture of consumption, especially a centered reliance on recycling. Recycling is the least productive of the 4 R’s and requires a large amount of energy, which is exactly what we are trying to avoid. Rather than focusing on the elimination of waste or the recycling of waste, I think we should be focusing on the elimination of production of wasteful products. If we create products that people can reuse over and over again, then recycling ceases to be necessary. The story of recycling is damaging and continues to perpetuate environmental issues.
Another story we tend to tell ourselves is that of “deserving.” We say, “I’ve been active all week, I deserve an ice cream cone,” or “I have been studying all day, I deserve to watch a movie,” and especially “I have worked so hard, I deserve a vacation.” UBI, as mentioned above, breaks the link between work and consumption, which in turn lessens environmental impact. It does this by giving money with no expectation of anything in return, and by allowing people a stronger sense of free will. UBI is a controversial idea, but it really shouldn’t be. It has been shown that entrepreneurship, future planning, and environmental benefit increases with UBI; that doesn’t sound so bad.
We also have distanced ourselves from our food, in a way which causes us not to value it. Products are cheap, so they exist in surplus, but the environmental cost is high. Placing cheapness at the center of our perspective on food is damaging because we waste it since we don’t see a high value in it. Yet another story we tell ourselves: food doesn’t matter, and we will always have it. How can that be true when the population is growing and we cannot survive without food? This is just one example of the values that must be transformed in order to create real radical change.
The planet can and will survive without us, but we cannot survive without it. I would like to believe we are experiencing some sort of transformation right now, while we are all stuck in our homes watching the world go on without us. We see pictures of massively lowered levels of pollution, and I hope we are acknowledging our destructive power. This is the first step, which hopefully can move us to transition to greener modes of life and economies. We need to rely less on innovation, and more on going back to basics and looking to nature to help.
Words: 2130
Question: Is it effective to be optimistic about the future of the human population? Can optimism create change?

A Tribute to the Fossmobile - 1897
As a little youngster, experiencing childhood in Fort Chambly, Quebec, now and again, I would hear accounts of George Foote Foss' (my grandfather's) innovation. Now and again, I would catch these accounts as my dad imparted the subtleties to companions and neighbors who were visiting our home. In any case, the accounts that I regularly heard came legitimately from my granddad, as we visited him as often as possible. I review affectionately, sitting on a hassock close to his feet as he sat in his enormous, agreeable seat, relating the means he took in tinkering, arranging and at last, fabricating a gas motor vehicle, which was to be the first in Canada - later named: "The Fossmobile."
In the mid-1960s (I was uniquely about age 7), I review that everybody around me was discussing a whirlwind of reestablished enthusiasm for his achievement. It was then that he was given two privileged enrollments: one from the Vintage Automobile Club of Montreal (VACM) and the other from the esteemed Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA). Just two Canadians have ever gotten this last respect. The other Canadian to get this was Colonel Robert Samuel McLaughlin, who began the McLaughlin Motor Car Company in 1907, which was one of the principal real vehicle makers in Canada.
With these two activities, there came a swarm of media consideration and I can review being demonstrated news sections, a large number of which despite everything I currently possess today. Not exclusively were there photos and articles expounded on his privileged participations, yet a large number of the nearby papers additionally republished his prior composition of: "The True Story of a Small Town Boy," initially distributed in 1954, by The Sherbrooke Daily Record.
Having a relative with chronicled centrality implied that the greater part of his relatives have wound up utilizing his development story and the different distributions about it, as a point for school ventures. I utilized his story as a point for one of my school ventures, both of my two kids did, and only a year prior my 6-year-old granddaughter did a "sharing time" at her school about her extraordinary incredible granddad's creation.
George Foote Foss (September 30, 1876 - November 23, 1968) was a specialist, metal forger, bike repairman and designer from Sherbrooke, Quebec. Throughout the winter of 1896, he built up a four-pull single-chamber fuel controlled car. In the spring of 1897, he finished his development: the main fuel controlled car to be worked in Canada, which was, later alluded to as the "Fossmobile".
It was in mid 1896, during an excursion to Boston, Massachusetts to purchase a turret machine for his extending machine shop, that my granddad saw his first vehicles. These autos, electrically determined broughams, were leased for $4.00 60 minutes. He paid the expense to have a ride, yet sadly, after a ride of just 30 minutes, the batteries kicked the bucket.
Coming back to Sherbrooke, he chose to manufacture a car that would address this issue. My granddad drove his vehicle in and around Sherbrooke, Quebec for a long time. He later moved to Montreal, Quebec, where the vehicle sat inert for a year before he sold it for $75 in 1902. He had recently turned down an idea to band together with Henry Ford who proceeded to frame the Ford Motor Company. He turned down the offer, as he trusted Ford's Quadricycle vehicle to be substandard compared to the Fossmobile. He likewise turned down money related sponsorship to mass-produce the Fossmobile, preferring to his naiveté to do as such, as he was just 21 years of age at the time.
I am regularly inquired as to whether I know whether my granddad had any second thoughts about not joining forces with Ford or not mass-creating his innovation. From all that I heard him state, he had no second thoughts. He appreciated a straightforward life and I heard him state time and again, that: "you don't carry on with a long existence with the worries of maintaining a major business." He passed away at age 92, so maybe his hypothesis was appropriate, in any event for him.
As of late, I re-opened the Foss family files, to all the more likely comprehend and precisely report my granddad's astounding achievement. My goal has been to discover approaches to impart this memorable Canadian occasion to car aficionados, history specialists and future ages of Canadians. To this end, I have set up a business, as a way to fabricate systems, encourage joint effort and offer significant recorded memorabilia.
As George Foss' grandson, I have conversed with certain visionaries and I am looking for the assistance of other potential specialists in "Vintage Automobile Restoration," for an extraordinary task. The objective is to utilize figuring out (the generation of a designer or maker's item), to make a "Tribute Automobile," copying as intently as could be expected under the circumstances, the particulars of George Foss' innovation of the principal gas controlled car worked in Canada: the Fossmobile. There are no unique drawings, so the Tribute Automobile should be founded exclusively on definite investigation of unique Fossmobile photographs.
I have started the way toward procuring vintage parts from the time, with the expectation of structure this vehicle, recreating parts just when it is completely important. I will give oversight to this procedure and work together with car students of history and specialists. En route, the adventure will be archived, while guaranteeing tender loving care.
The expectation is to respect my granddad's heritage and bring to more noteworthy light, this huge section of Canadian history. With its finish, this Tribute Automobile will be an unmistakable exemplification of the principal fuel vehicle worked in Canada. There is a developing enthusiasm for exhibiting the finished Tribute Fossmobile in exemplary car expos. Be that as it may, it will in the end be given to a Canadian exhibition hall to upgrade notable instruction for present and who and what is to come.
