copyright hurts me as an indigenous person because dead white people own the likenesses of my ancestors faces in photos. they own the little history of ours that is written down in old books and newspapers, i cannot access for copyright reasons. they came and captured our faces for "science", for their own personal interest and now we are owned after death
I'm sorry.
I don't know much about this this issue, but here are a few links for people who might like to know more (leaning heavily on legal sources and focusing mostly on the U.S. - other people please feel free to add more links and information).
One recent example of white people copyrighting and selling language back to Lakota peoples that received a fair amount of news coverage:
A 1996 paper about Native American's potential right (and lack of rights) to request or demand the return of photographs held by museums:
An ABA article from this year that discusses in broad terms the lack of protection for Native American culture and traditional knowledge in the U.S.'s current intellectual property system, and the need for such protection:
An article about the 2018 Music Modernization Act could affect recordings of Native American songs, stories, and languages, that includes a broader critique of the fundamental assumptions of U.S. copyright law:
A similar discussion out of Canada:
Which links to another horrifying story of theft stories, history, and language, and details how the law made such a theft possible:
And a recent law review article proposing a path to increase protection for Indigenous works under current law, which isn't quite on point but contains some interesting discussion of the legal landscape and potential practical suggestions (although I am skeptical as to how likely or effective they could be):

pn character name post...TWO! last name edition and also the random psychonauts around the motherlobe who i didn't feel like including in the first one
including ones that aren't real surnames but are real words/clearly plays on real words. if one is missing assume either it doesn't mean anything/I couldn't find a meaning or I didn't think it needed explaining (e.g. Sweetwind, Doom)
Aquato - clearly a play on "aqua"
Nein - "no" in German
Zanotto - from a diminuitive of Zane or Zani/Zanni, the Venetian form of Gianni, which is short for Giovanni, which is the Italian form of "John" (God is gracious, Hebrew). unrelated but "Zanni" is also where we get the English word "zany"
Oleander - a flowering shrub that is grown as an ornamental or landscape plant despite being poisonous
Cruller - a kind of twisty donut :)
Boole - possibly from a Middle English word for bull
Canola - genericized trademark of a brand of cooking oil. the "can" is short for "Canada"
Zilch - German surname of uncertain etymology, slang for 'nothing'
Athens - after the Greek city, which Athena was probably named after, not the other way around
Lutefisk - Norwegian word for a traditional Nordic fish dish. it's soaked in lye.
Bulgakov - son of Bulgak (Bulgak being a surname in its own right that means "restless" or "troublesome"). Mikhail is probably named after the Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov, best known for The Master and Margarita
Fir - as in a fir tree
Phage - short for bacteriophage; a Greek suffix meaning "eater"
Bubai - Mandarin word meaning "invincible"
Tripe - animal stomach lining prepared for food; figuratively used to mean nonsense or valueless ideas/writing
Fideleo - possibly from Latin "fidelis", faithful/loyal
Cooper - barrel maker (English)
Soleil - "sun" in French
Houndstooth - a fabric pattern (that Becky does not wear)
Rolls - likely alluding to fat rolls
Bonaparte - French-ified version of Buonaparte, an Italian surname meaning "good match" or "good solution"
Teglee - derived from famed black velvet painter Edgar Leeteg; "Leeteg" was originally "Lütig", which I can't find a straight answer on what that means
Inflagrante - from "in flagrante", a shortened version of "in flagrante delicto", a Latin term that literally translates to "while the crime is blazing" and basically means "in the act"; it can refer to being in the act of doing something bad but particularly when shortened also means. well. in the act of Doing A Sex
DeLucca - alternate spelling of Italian De Luca, "[child] of Luca"; Luca ultimately meaning "from Lucania"
Pokeylope - pokey (slow) + lope (to walk slowly). good turtle name
Loboto - clearly a play on "lobotomy"
Forsythe - man of peace (Scottish Gaelic)
Natividad - Spanish for "nativity", meaning birth but particularly referring to the births of Mary or Jesus. a common name in the Philippines in addition to Spanish-speaking countries
Martinez - son of Martin (Spanish). "Martin" is derived from "Mars", Roman god of war and root of the word "martial"
Joseph - "he [God] will add" (Hebrew)
Gette - variation of Goethe, derived from "Gott" (God in Middle High German as well as modern German)
Neriman (also spelled Nariman) - a name of Persian origin, possibly meaning "brave mind"
Potts - topographical name. if you lived near holes in the ground you might have gotten called Potts
Malik - "king" in Arabic and various other Semitic languages; as a surname, is most common in India and Pakistan
OKAY now for the miscellaneous motherlobe NPCs
Brianne - "hill" or "power" (Celtic)
Chet - short for Chester, "fortress" (Latin)
Colin - young dog (Scottish)
Crenshaw - possibly "twisted wood" (Old English)
Dustin - from Thorsteinn, "Thor's stone" (Old Norse)
Evan - from the Welsh form of John
Forrest - take a guess.
Frank - Frenchman, more or less
Hawkins - diminuitive of Hawk or of Hal (from Henry, "home ruler", Germanic)
Jared - descent (Hebrew)
Kim - diminuitive of various names
Kramer - shopkeeper, merchant (German)
Lance - land (German/Old Saxon)
Larry - short for Laurence, "from Laurentum" (Latin)
Lori - short for Laura (laurel) or Lorraine (kingdom of Lothar, a Frankish king)
Sherri - from "cherie", French for darling
Susan - lily (Hebrew)
Thad - short for Thaddeus, Greek name of unclear origin
Whitlatch - "white path" or "white stream" (Old English)

Happy Birthday Gregory Edward “Greg” Hemphill born 14th December 1969 in Glasgow.
I think the majority of us will know who Greg is, one half of the successful partnership with partner, Ford Kiernan that is Still Game.
The family left Scotland when Greg was twelve years old, and he spent much of his childhood in Montreal, Canada. Greg returned home to study at Glasgow University, in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, graduating MA in 1992.
Greg made his acting debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1990. His work includes roles in God Plus Support in the Theatre and Only an Excuse. He is a regular on the comedy circuit. He also ventured into radio as the original presenter of football show, Off the Ball on BBC Radio Scotland and The Eddie Mair Show. As well as writing for Still Game and Chewin The Fat he has written for Channel 4 programme Space Cadets, BBC’s Pulp Video and The Ferguson Theory.
Still Game has transferred successfully onto the big stage and has sold out countless times at The Hydro. The third and final run of the shows Still Game: The Final Farewell was officially announced on 1st November 2018. The ninth and final series of Still Game was screened in 2019 The show won an ‘Outstanding Contribution’ TV award at Scottish Baftas that year.
Away from his work Greg is a bit of a card shark, he plays in competitions, he has won over thirty thousand dollars in competitions and was third in the Scottish Championships in 2002
Greg has been kind of quiet of late, but the good news is he returns to our screens on Hogmanay with a new sketch show. The show is set to bring up all the biggest talking points of this year – from COP26 to the wild swimming phenomenon. The show titled “Queen of the New Year” will star Greg and Robert Florence along with Barbara Rafferty, Clive Russell, Gayle Telfer Stevens, Louise McCarthy, John Gordon Sinclair and Juliet Cadzow, so some familiar faces from Still Game and Burnistoun.
Greg is married to Balamory star Julie Wilson Nimmo, 46, they announced they are to their own production company launch Blue Haven Productions Limited. The latest from Greg and Julie who live in the West End of Glasgow, is they will be teaming up who live in the West End, are appearing together in Olga da Polga, the first-ever television adaptation of Paddington creator Michael Bond’s beloved books. The new 13-part, live-action and animation series is produced by Glasgow-based production company Marakids, and it has been made with the full support of the Bond family.
Greg and Julie have been married since 1999, they met while both were working on the 90s sketch show Pulp Video. Greg says of them;
“We met on sketch shows, and we always laughed a lot. We still do. There are lots of laughs, lots of carry on when we work together.”
Greg and his Still Game sidekick Ford Kiernan launched a whisky, named after their characters Jack and Vioctor a few years back, and the knobs at Jack Daniels objected after the pair later applied to register the name as a trademark for whisky and other drink-related services. The matter ended up going to an arbitrator. The Tennessee-based company claimed the drink, named after Still Game’s two main characters, could confuse customers and make them think they were endorsing the Scotch blend.
The firm argued the name could allow the Scottish whisky to cash in on the recognition of the well-known brand.
Hemphill, who plays the character Victor, provided evidence during the dispute while managing director Justin Welch provided evidence for Jack Daniel’s.
Hemphill said Still Game was a popular show across the UK, particularly in Scotland, arguing that “Jack and Victor” has become synonymous with the BBC programme.
It was a great triumph for the small guy versus golliath, Jack Daniel’s was ordered to pay £3,200 to Jack and Victor Limited, the company used to market the whisky earlier this year.
Greg returned to our screens last spring in Dinosaur Scottish comedy drama television series set in Glasgow the series was nominated for four BAFTA Scotland awards, a second series is in the pipeline. Greg and Robert Florence's sketch show Queen Of The New Year is returning to BBC Scotland on 1st January for the fourth year running.
Looking for a perfect Scottish christama stocking filler, Still Game returns in comic book form titled "Still Game: He Who Hingith Aboot Getteth Hee Haw".

alright so I need help with something. One of my friends believes that everything Cartman has done is okay because Stan and Kyle are on the same level of malicious as him.
I told my friend that Cartman is constantly racist, antisemitic, transphobic, etc etc., but he says that Cartman shouldn’t be held accountable for his actions and is innocent. He says that Kyle is just as bad as Cartman because Kyle picks on Cartman back, when in reality Kyle is just standing up for himself. He also brings up a few small bad things Stan and Kyle have done to try and argue that they’re just as bad as Cartman, but most of his excuses can be summed up to the fact that Stan and Kyle are eight, and don’t have the best parents. My friend also argues that Cartman is just young and not raised well, but Stan and Kyle aren’t racist or antisemitic or homophobic/transphobic or anything like that, and Stan’s dad is one of the worst parents. Stan and Kyle never dressed up as hitler or fed a guy his parents.
But still, my friend thinks Cartman is innocent and just a victim. I need help proving why Cartman is basically just a vessel to be hateful.
ok, so i’m first going to link you a great post by one of my mutuals that i think explains the concept really well, just to give you even more to work with!: https://www.tumblr.com/amporella/712879294897094656/those-posts-floating-around-about-how-all-the-boys
also this got way longer than i expected it to so here’s a read more lmao
what i will say is that, crucially, when characters like stan and kyle do anything particularly bad, it’s shown as something that stands out in contrast to other things they’ve done in the show, and usually the consequences they face are less slapstick and silly than the ones cartman faces bc, well, they’re not usually bad people! like in Super Hard PCness, kyle’s actions leading to nuclear war with canada doesn’t just affect the world at large but also his personal life. his relationship with ike is damaged. his relationship with stan is damaged. you’re supposed to see it as distinctly WORSE than how kyle usually acts!
cartman, on the other hand, quite literally exists to do bad shit. when he does terrible things, it’s not supposed to contrast his character, it is his ENTIRE CHARACTER. stan and kyle are (usually) the mouthpieces for what matt and trey think of as “good,” whether we see it that way or not. for a WHILE it was a south park trademark to end with kyle (or sometimes stan) saying “i learned something today,” because they’re the moral compasses that you’re supposed to relate to and empathize with. cartman never learns. why should he? that’s boring! if there are characters who are stand ins for what matt and trey see as the opinion that you should have, there must also be a character who stands in for the character who represents something they see as stupid or reprehensible. this is—most of the time—cartman (sometimes randy or mr garrison, but NOT stan and NOT kyle!)
now, as far as kyle’s picking on cartman being just as bad, i’ll say this: antisemitism has a body count dating back thousands of years. it is one of the oldest forms of discrimination and it harms jewish people to this day on many MANY levels. when cartman is being antisemitic, is quite literally cannot be compared to kyle making fun of him being fat or being fatherless or being stupid. it just can’t. i know it’s taboo to compare oppressive systems but let’s just be real here: kyle calls cartman a fatass. cartman thinks that kyle’s entire ethnicity and religion are bad. he treats kyle differently because he’s jewish. you’re not supposed to equate these! and you know this because the worst kyle’s fatphobia gets is using cartman as reality tv fodder in Raising the Bar. the worst cartman’s antisemitism gets is attempting to raise the townspeople up in a revitalized nazi movement in Passion of the Jew. if i need to explain how THAT isn’t the same, idk what to tell you!
now, a lot of people see cartman as innocent or a victim because he’s a kid. his dad being absent, his mom being an enabler, the many implications of csa, etc. the thing about this things are that matt and trey didn’t write these in as something for you to feel bad for cartman over. stan has multiple episodes where you’re supposed to feel bad for him re: his relationship with his dad. kyle has the same. and the majority of kenny centric episodes literally exist to make you feel for kenny. many of these are even played straight! this is not the case for cartman. this is because cartman doesn’t have the level of three dimensionality that the other characters do. sure, he has episodes where he is given a bit more depth, like most recently i’d point to the Vaccination Special. but these are VERYYYY rare, especially when compared to the other members of the main four, who actually do grow and change throughout the show. unlike cartman, who sometimes changes and grows, like in s20, but then he immediately reverts back to how he was by s22. this is not something that happens w the other three!
this is getting rambly so i’ll try to wrap it up here: cartman isn’t a character who you’re supposed to empathize with. you’re supposed to laugh at him. you’re supposed to be shocked by him. you’re supposed to find it funny when he does fucked up things but also cheer when he gets his comeuppance. cartman is INTEGRAL to the plot and the show itself. south park wouldn’t be south park without him! but this is because of how distinctly horrible he is. to say that anyone is as bad as cartman is not only disingenuous, it’s missing the point.
EDIT: i lied i have one more thing to say. you wanna see a character who does bad shit and becomes progressively worse than the other kids throughout the show who it can be easily explained by victimhood? butters. that’s why butters exists. if you want a character who does a lot of shitty things but you can still empathize with and pity due to the awful hand they’ve been dealt, they literally wrote one of those for you. ok now i’m really done. probably. you never know.
#hope this is even remotely coherent bc i just finished writing a research paper for 4 hours so my brains a little fried#meta#cartman#asks

Took some time and put some punctuation in this one 🙂. I have really been trying to capture my experiences and put them to verse.
I take ownership because my mistakes are mine. I don't like leaving loose ends. I may migrate from my problems like goo-ses from Canada, yes Canadian geese's. Didn't rhyme there you see back to the thesis. Audibly if I were spitting I would bend some of these words. To navigate the twist and turns like DQ I got that trademark swirl. Hungry for success like a dog barking at every squirrel. These are lyrics at best, but back to the plot. I temporarily lost my grip, fell off my bicycle, missed the peddle and slipped. Happy to just get back up and try instead of quitting. Like if I grabbed my scraped wrist, and exclaimed ick, time for me to quit, this bicycle thing is sick. Just like John wick, this candle end is lit. This is no diss. These are my experiences. In my younger days, I never acted my age. I would just say things to spray, behind a counter all day. I didn't value words, I just learned what to say. Burned them in a hot fire and smelted a dagger. Now I feel like I can lighten up a room like Mick Jagger. Not trying to be conceded, just taking ownership because I know I dropped the ball. Keeping my head up just like the Philadelphia Eagles because I know there is a new set of downs waiting for me next fall.

I wanted to do Canada, but they covered their tracks really well
"The National Flag of Canada is a red flag, twice as long as it is wide (proportion 2:1, or 64 units in length and 32 units in width or depth, as shown in the accompanying diagram). In its centre is a white square the width of the Flag, with a single stylized 11-point red maple leaf in the centre. The flag is horizontally symmetric.
In order to be considered proper representations of the National Flag of Canada, depictions of the flag must respect the correct proportions (2:1) and colours (red and white), and feature the stylized 11-point maple leaf in the centre. The flag and its maple leaf are protected symbols under the Trademarks Act."
This is the best I could do:

Happy Fathers Day Celebration!
Happy Fathers Day Celebration is tomorrow and there are many ways to celebrate Father’s Day in Canada. Each family has their own way of celebrating, but some common ways include giving gifts, treating dads to a special meal, watching movies, going fishing, and going to parks or other places of interest. Additionally, Canadians would also say “Happy Father’s Day” to their fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, fathers-in-law, foster parents, uncles, and other men who stand and act as a father figure to them.
Happy Fathers Day Celebration Some people also participate in Father’s Day fun runs and other events in which the proceeds go towards charity or prostate cancer research. Give you Dad a hug! Prepare him a home cooked meal!

On July 5, 1908, a small church in West Virginia held the first public event meant to specifically honor the fathers of their community. The day was held in remembrance of the 362 men who were killed the previous December in a mining explosion at the Fairmont Coal Company. 5. Roses were originally a big part of the Father’s Day celebration but the first Father’s Day included a church service where daughters would hand red roses to their fathers during the mass. 6. 60: Nash the Slash // And You Thought You Were Normal
And You Thought You Were Normal Nash the Slash 1982, Shanghai (Bandcamp) If ever an artist deserved a slot in any gonzo-friendly record collection, it’s Toronto’s Nash the Slash. Nash was never seen without his trademark Invisible Man-style swaddling of bandages and black sunglasses, typically costumed in a white tuxedo and top-hat and wielding an electric violin or mandolin like a sparking angle grinder. He hollered more than sang, usually through some manner of vocal processing than gave his voice the watery snarl of a monstrous burn victim out for revenge. The music of his ’80s hey day fell somewhere between the synth-driven prog of a Mike Oldfield or a Jean-Michel Jarre and the broody synthpop of Gary Numan, though as you might gather Nash’s music was far more biting than any of those acts.
Many of his artistic peers loved him—Numan and Iggy Pop invited him to open for them, and he provided the score for early films by Canada’s great indie filmmaker Bruce McDonald (Roadkill, Highway 61). But, despite said fans and peers saying the appropriate platitudes re: their bewilderment that he didn’t become a bigger star, it seems transparently obvious why he remains a cult figure: he was a weird misanthrope from Toronto who chose to wear a horribly uncomfortable and visually unsettling costume and made weird misanthropic music. I’ve known a number of crusty, narrowly brilliant old artists who’ve felt they deserved a better shake from the world—and also would’ve burned their own work before allowing someone who seemed like a square to buy any of it.
That’s an accounting criticism, not an artistic one. And You Thought You Were Normal is Nash the Slash at his best. It eschews the snarky classic rock covers he leaned on for Children of the Night and American Band-ages, leaving more space for bent pop originals (side one) and expansive instrumental compositions (side two). As usual, Nash plays everything himself and produces all but one track, the exception being a young Daniel Lanois on the boards for robot party highlight “Dance After Curfew” (a club hit in Iron Curtain-era Poland!). Of the songier songs, “Vincent’s Crows” is the other winner, an improbably beautiful ode to the dissolution of the self featuring Nash’s most impassioned vocals and violin.
Your mileage may vary with side two, depending on your taste for the soundtracks of violent ‘80s science fiction films, but I find it to be even more fun than the flip. When I first put it on my table, I sent a series of increasingly lengthy voice memos to my friend Haakon (who’d recommended it), freaking out to them about how sick Nash’s shredding is on “Stalker,” a fleet-fingered showcase that is even cooler than I thought Joe Satriani’s “Surfing with the Alien” was when I was 14.
You’ve read enough. Time for you to fall into a live video hole. Start here, and as you do, reflect on the fact that they put this on Canadian TV in the 1980s:

ok here you go
marcus lore under the cut!! (warning this shit is LONG.)
// CW for a suicide mention and other dark themes
he’s in a band called pesticide, which involves marcus himself (guitar, vocals), ichiro (main vocals), asahi (drums), and lili (bass)
(asahi belongs to phos .. eheh)
pesticide is almost as famous as clash at the demonhead
ANYWAYS about marcus himself
he was born into a wealthy family, the winston’s were a head of a medicinal company, with their only child, marcus. he was mentally stable when he was little ….. actually having friends… going great in school… normal /lh
dad and his side of the family migrated to canada from russia shortly before he meets marcus’s mom, he’s your typical big scary russian guy /hj
anyways dad dies in a helicopter accident, and not even a week later, his mother kills herself out of grief, marcus is the one who finds her body in the garage. brain blown right out of her head. (he’s like. 11 btw)
custody of him transferred to his grandmother (mother’s mom), his mental health was slowly deteriorating, and he was resorting to rebellious acts to cope. his grandma was so sweet but she obviously wasn’t super fond of his change in demeanor over the years.. (he kept great grades though! surprisingly. he’s a whizz kid, super smart because of super smart and successful parents. it’s in his blood /hj)
no matter how horrible his mental health was, he kept trucking in school, i don’t know how
(OH also ichiro from pesticide i mentioned earlier. he and marcus r childhood friends. ichiro moved from japan to toronto when he was 10-ish, and he and marcus met during a class, and they’ve been friends ever since)
anyways, grandmother dies of age complications, which.. just worsens everything for marcus. (he’s 15 when this happens)
THEN. this is where things get. BADD. um. custody transfers again, this time to his uncle and aunt (uncle works for the same science medicine company marcus’s parents owned. he’s the mad scientist archetype. experiments on animals and bugs and shit. ‘i can concoct better drugs than my brother and sister-in-law did’.
he wants to prove that he’s smarter and better than them. and he ALSO wants to show marcus that HE is way more capable than he gives off (he is, but he chooses the absolutely worst way to present this)
so marcus’s uncle (his name is jack) invites him on experiments and stuff!!! makes him his guinea pig for concoctions. this is going on for like 7 months. one day he gets called into the lab trademark after school. jack is all like “ok buddy i have this MIND BLOWING experiment and i need you to try it first BECAUSE ITS GONNA BE AMAZING‼️”
it’s a medicine that gives you animal traits to like. aid you in specific situations. you probably can tell where this is going. /hj
he takes in the vaccine and turns into a shapeshifter!! his shifts r uncontrollable for the most part, and sometimes run on emotions….. it is NOT what jack was expecting. and jack doesn’t have a cure.
a month later marcus’s AUNT gets in a car accident and dies in the hospital like a day later. his cousin confronts him at her funeral and he’s all like “dude do you kill every person you’re around??? you’re a fucking murderer” and marcus goes BEAR MODE (he shifts into a bear beast when his anger is heightened) and almost kills HIM. it’s so scary. ichiro finds him and is able to ground him.. they share a special moment… this is when ichiro finally finds out about the whole shapeshifting thing… ichiro is all like “i still love you man, and i’ll help you out however i can”
the cousin is respectful enough (surprisingly) to not say anything abt marcus bear-ing out and almost killing him (it’s also mostly bc he’s scared it’ll happen again if he does)
after the funeral marcus tells jack about the confrontation :(
then marcus and ichiro finally decide to pursue in their band, they’re starting to get more popular and stuff with debut songs, things start turning around
but THEN a year later marcus gets a step aunt. she’s a BITCH. mentally abuses him behind jack’s back. it’s so bad.
BUT things finally get brighter when ichiro and marcus r heading off to college together.. marcus… and the one safe space he’s had for going on 9 years…
their band grows, both in popularity and in. actual members. they gain a new member, lili!! who can play bass!! she’s ibuki core.. ehehe
the three of them tend to hangout and practice on campus grounds. they frequent a street food vendor for lunch on campus too (the owner of the vendor happens to be another college student, asahi… smiles evilly) eventually asahi joins the band as a drummer bc they r in need of a drummer…
that’s.. tbh that’s abt all i have so far HASBAHSHA
I TYPED OUT A WHOLE MARCUS LORE THING.
