Quebec's language will have unexpected consequences on music retailers as they brace for major changes in the new year. As of June 2025, every label on every commercial product, from washing machines to a Marshal amplifier, will have to be translated into French. For the retail chain, Long & McQuade, the rule hit a sour note because it means that a lot of musical instruments and equipment could be pulled from Quebec stores. "After June 2025, we wouldn't be allowed to sell you a Marshall amp because it says volume," said Steve Long, the President of Long & McQuade.

There's an art series called Froid'Art in Kingston, Canada that is basically an outdoor exhibition of acrylic paintings frozen directly into ice. The exhibition is on from 'now until the snow melts'. And there's something so ephemeral and fleeting and in the moment about art that has this variable deadline on it: when the air warms up and your knees aren't knocking in the cold, will you be happy to feel a warm breeze or sad to watch a beautiful painting melt?
Anyway, it sounds like a great idea, I'm going to show you a few pictures from their websites and socials.
Tumblr media
The idea of the exhibition was to give people 'a reason to go outside for a walk' and to embrace winter. They etched with markers and acrylic paints onto transparent plastic mylar sheets, imagined everything from warm, summery scenes to Canada's most beloved band (and Kingston locals) The Tragically Hip, and froze them into 300 lb blocks of clear ice.
Tumblr media
"There is a depth and beauty to the finished work that we could not have envisioned. There, suspended, embedded, enshrined within this perfect ice, was our work. A frame of embracing cold that somehow could make you feel warm. The work took on new dimensions. It gained a holographic quality, it gleamed!", writes one of the artists, Lori Kallay.

Recently I've become obsessed with "The Last Saskactchwewan Pirate" after some glorious individual recommended it on that one post I made about Stan Rogers songs, but only just now did I realize the incredible comedic juxtaposition it has with "The Idiot."
One song is about a working class guy from somewhere in Eastern Canada but I'm gonna say somewhere near the Great Lakes or Atlantic because it's funnier, who loses his job in a recession but he's too proud to go on welfare so he moves to the prairies and gets a crappy job at an oil refinery that he hates.
The other song is about a working class guy from the Canadian Prairies who loses his farm in a recession and can't get a job but he's too proud to go on welfare so he... becomes a fucking pirate. And remains on the Canadian Prairies having the time of his life (except for winter when he goes down to New Mexico
I cannot stop giggling about the idea of the protagonists of these two songs meeting. Imagining the guy in "The Idiot" commuting home from his crappy job after another overnight shift when he sees a fucking pirate ship cruising down the river blasting sea shanties, and thinking that maybe he chose the wrong line of work.
And then he joins the crew

Attention non-Canadians!
Inspired by this poll on the subject, which (if any) of these other Canadian bands/musicians have you heard of?
(if you recognize more than one, vote for the one you think is the most niche and then tell me in the tags)
I tried to get a decent genre spread, but I almost certainly missed something important. Canadian mutuals if you have any other suggestions hmu, drop your music recs in the tags!

LEFT SIDE DRIVE | rel. 2011 SOLANGE ft. BOARDS OF CANADA
“It’s completely unofficial, and was just inspired by the song which I have had a deep love affair with for years,” she explained, adding, “I am a huge Boards of Canada fan, and got the chance to work with them on Sol-Angel on ‘This Bird’. Still feel honored to this day.” —Solange, 2011

Phlox paniculata (garden phlox)
As regular visitors to this blog may remember, my house is up for sale. Unfortunately, It hasn't sold yet but this gives me an opportunity to say a long, loving goodbye to a garden that has given me so much pleasure.
This species of Phlox is a perennial and it's been putting out these beautiful pink flowers for years. I'm planning to dig up a chunk, put it in a pot and see if it will grow on a balcony. When I sell, I'll look for a place that get's the morning sun. I think my pink garden phlox would prefer that.
