9/16/24.
I was definitely on an Americana/country jag a couple of months ago. In the last couple of days, I've listened multiple times to three releases that, for me at least, fall into the Americana category. First, we have Steve Leon & the Accusations (Antwerp, Belgium). I can't help but think this is what Shane McGowan might have sounded like had he gone Americana.
Next, Skinny Dyck (Lethridge, Alberta, Canada). We posted about him nearly 4 years ago. I've always enjoyed listening to Skinny Dyck. This is released by Victory Pool and Sound Asleep Records.
And finally, Ba Da Bing Records is releasing "Descendent" from Glasgow, Scotland based band Snowgoose. Anna Sheard and Jim McCulloch (The Soup Dragons, and BMX Bandits) combine with sounds that, according to the Bandcamp write-up, recall 10,000 Maniacs and Pentangle. Click through to see the list of contributing musicians. It's a veritable Glasgow all-star lineup.

Well, it's the Olympics in the age of trans panic and I'm sure you can guess what that means. With that in mind, a few thoughts about gender and sport.
Okay, let's talk about the specific event that touched this off, Italy's Angela Carini abandoned a boxing match with Algeria's Imane Khelif after only 46 seconds, citing Khelif's strength and power. Some of the less reputable people in politics and media then began to speculate that she had some gender advantage despite having passed a gender and drug test which would have discovered something.
Look, let's get this out of the way at the start, Imane Khelif is a woman. She was born a girl and matured into a woman. She lives in and competes for a country where gender transition is illegal and there's no indication to any reasonable person that she's anything other than a woman who is very good at boxing. Perhaps she has some genetics that help her but, let's face it, every single athlete capable of competing at the Olympic level does; no one complained that Michael Phelp's low production of lactic acid was an unfair advantage! The only reason that there's any "controversy" at all is that people have this ingrained idea that women should NOT be too good at boxing.
And, ultimately, that's the biggest problem with this whole gender panic. There are three (count 'em, three) transgender athletes in the Olympics this year, Canada's Quinn (soccer), New Zealand's Laurel Hubbard (weightlifting), and the US's Chelsea Wolfe (BMX Freestyle - Reserve). Every other athlete in the Olympics was born in their assigned gender and has been tested as such in order to compete.
So why are people panicking about trans athletes? Simple, because their ideas about gender do not match the reality. Not every woman is physically smaller and weaker than every man, not every man has a hulking physique, and there is no clear dividing line between the testosterone levels of women and men. There's also racism at work, African and Middle Eastern women tend to have facial features associated with masculinity in the west while Asian men tend to have facial features associated with femininity in the west making it easy for white audiences without exposure to minorities to assume the worst.
Ultimately, though, the problem is this idea of a sharp gender binary as if men and women were two clearly different species with no overlap between them. Let's say this as clearly as possible: there is no way to define "woman" in a way that excludes all trans women and includes all cisgender women. There is simply too much overlap between men and women; biologically speaking, mammals in general have very small gender differences compared to other groups of species such as insects or certain groups of fish (look up the differences between male and female spiders or anglerfish sometime, THAT'S a gender binary).
What that means is that, no matter how you try to define "woman" or "man", you will always end up with a category that includes some people who every reasonable person would consider to be the opposite.
So here's the question I think we all need to answer before we go any further: what is the purpose of separating sports by gender? Is it so that inferior female athletes can get medals that would be denied to them by superior male athletes? Is it to reinforce our cultural gender norms? Is it another way to divide the competition for fairness like weight classes in boxing?
I suspect that different people have different answers to that question and, until we settle on a universal answer, athletes (who, by the way, are pretty much all outside of the averages for their age and gender by definition) are going to continue to be caught in the crossfire of one of the worst arguments to dominate our society.

15 Questions 15 Mutuals
I was tagged by @khaotunq 🫶🫶
Are you named after anyone? - Nope, I was actually named something else until I was born when I came out the wrong gender (they thought I was boy, scans weren’t great in the 80’s lol) So I was nameless for the first couple weeks of my life until my aunt named me, she thought the name she chose matched my sister’s name well, said we sounded like sisters.
When was the last time you cried? - Like six hours ago lol, I had an anxiety attack which usually involves some tears.
Do you have kids? - Nope, I cannot medically have children. If I did manage to get pregnant by some miracle, there’s a good chance I could die ☠️
Do you use sarcasm a lot? - According to medical professionals, I apparently use it as a coping mechanism lol!
What spots do you play/have played? - I haven’t played a sport since I was in school, ngl. I was on the girl’s travel soccer team and the shot put team. I also did gymnastics, swam and ice skated. I was big into BMX biking when I was a pre-teen too, it was a 90’s, that was super cool at the time.
What’s the first thing you notice about other people? - Height, eyes, lips, hands.
What’s your eye colour? - Dark dark brown, my eyes look black indoors and nearly gold in direct sunlight.
Scary movies or happy endings? - I enjoy scary movies more than anything, but I do tend to write happy endings. So… both 🤷♀️
Any special talents - I mean, I have one that tends to be a party trick that people want to see when they find out about it. I have zero gag reflex, no it’s not suppressed, no I don’t have to work past it, it’s just legit not there. I’ve had doctors look at me in shock when they basically stick their hand down my throat and I don’t blink an eye lol. @kellanwrites once watched me put an entire banana down my throat without even breaking eye contact 😉
Where were you born? - Ontario, Canada.
What are your hobbies? - Reading, crocheting, writing, baking, nail art, colouring, video games, sitting around and doing nothing while waiting for the cold hand of death to grip me and drag me away… too dark? That might have gotten too dark, sorry about that.
Do you have any pets? - A dog, a rabbit, and guinea pig and four cats.
How tall are you? - I’m 5’8, which is very tall for someone who’s AFAB, although I am one of the shorter females in my family, shockingly lol. My older sister is 5’11 and my mother is 6’ tall.
Favourite subject at school - English, science, art, music and history.
Dream job - Something where I wouldn’t have to interact with anyone, like stacking books or shelves in the back of a store. Counting out pills in a pharmacy, just a job where I could count/stack/arrange things quietly away from people. Maybe working in an archive of some sort 🤔
Oh no, help me, I need to see if I have 15 mutuals now lol!!! Sorry if you’ve already been tagged in this, feel free to ignore me and as always, there’s no pressure to play along 💖

7/22/23.
Super 8 is the vehicle for the music of Paul "Trip" Ryan (UK). We posted about their excellent collaboration with Lisa Mychols nearly 3 years ago.
"Hoopla" is Ryan's latest release and it is being handled by Ottawa, Canada label The Beautiful Music. The 2nd song - "Susan Revolving" is a cover of an unreleased Andy Partridge/XTC song penned in 1983.
Ryan cites a laundry list of influences on The Beautiful Music release page, but I would highlight The Beatles, Sonny Smith, and BMX Bandits. I still feel like his vocals have a J. Mascis feel to them.

SAINT-EUSTACHE, VILLE CHALEUREUSE
Tu as le choix!

Canada has a weird relation with BMX. It’s clearly a place teeming with a type of talent that makes a great underground type scene. Kind of like the US NorthEast and the UK in a way where the riding is very seasonal. Winter has a way dampening things for a while then Spring and Summer rolls around, the scene’s energy is renewed. Sure half the tricks you learned maybe gone but that type of energy is infectious in it’s own way. The struggle riding comes in and it’s all very creative and different compared to the media heavy Socal scene. Canada’s winter is certainly worse than the other places mentioned though that’s good and bad. It makes the riders who push through all that much more lifers but being a lifer is certainly a prestigious position that doesn’t necessarily equate to sales. I imagine being a snowboarder would be much more easier in Canada. Being BMX biker in Canada regardless how good is an uphill battle.
But the hardships in Canada show. Like Animal Bikes is the only thing really out of the American Northeast with longevity seems kind of concrete and lasting. There were plenty of other companies that tried to form but all of it fell out eventually. The infrastructure for even a place that is a small percent of America but encompasses a population probably probably more than five times more populated than Canada finds it hard to push. Canada has a similar problem I imagine but I don’t really necessarily get that struggle vibe from Atlantis Vancouver. I think the amount of regular content and being somewhat a focus for entire country that regardless has had a heavy presence in BMX past and present allows them to do so. Like any BMX brand is always gonna be a struggle but it’s certain brands that keep the scene alive and well, that make it. I don’t know if Macniel still exists and Seshin that defacto underground brand of Canada no longer does so it’s Atlantis Vancouver keeps that side of BMX going. in the country that made the pivotal post.
I think what I like about Canada and Atlantis Vancouver is that the scene is very self aware with it’s own status. It does’t try to be anything other than what it is and it feels that much more alive and the people involved seem that much more passionate to push it. It’s not like their trying to emulate anything directly or something like that. There is something very underground that is ingrained in their BMX culture and they thrive on that, something that Atlantis Vancouver captured. Like the local scene web videos Canada does an amazing job on and zines, DWOK, DVD’s stuff like that which really makes it something else. I hate using the word real to describe things but I guess what I’m gonna say instead is that true BMX culture thrives in this type of attitude and movement, I don’t have any empirical evidence but I’d like to think that there seems to be resurgence in the scene of Vancouver and Canada as a whole due to these efforts. Canada had a moment a few years back where it was really quiet but it’s kicking some dust now. Riders like Eli Taylor and Jordan Hango come from Canada and thier complete powerhousers like Dave Osato before. It’s cool to see.
