Canada PM Trudeau is likely to announce resignation, source says
OTTAWA, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is increasingly likely to announce he intends to step down, though he has not made a final decision, a source familiar with Trudeau's thinking said on Sunday.
The source spoke to Reuters after the Globe and Mail reported that Trudeau was expected to announce as early as Monday that he would quit as leader of Canada's ruling Liberal Party after nine years in office.
The source requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Trudeau's departure would leave the party without a permanent head at a time when polls show the Liberals will badly lose to the official opposition Conservatives in an election that must be held by late October.
Sources told the Globe and Mail that they did not know definitely when Trudeau would announce his plans to leave but said they expect it would happen before a emergency meeting of Liberal legislators on Wednesday.
An increasing number of Liberal parliamentarians, alarmed by a series of gloomy polls, have publicly urged Trudeau to quit.
The prime minister's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours. The prime minister's regularly published schedule for Monday said he would participate virtually in a cabinet committee meeting on Canada-U.S. relations.
It remains unclear whether Trudeau will leave immediately or stay on as prime minister until a new Liberal leader is selected, the Globe and Mail report added.
CALLS TO RESIGN GROW
Trudeau took over as Liberal leader in 2013 when the party was in deep trouble and had been reduced to third place in the House of Commons for the first time.
If he does resign, it would likely spur fresh calls for a quick election to put in place a stable government able to deal with the administration of President-elect Donald Trump for the next four years.
The prime minister has discussed with Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc whether he would be willing to step in as interim leader and prime minister, one source told the newspaper, adding that this would be unworkable if LeBlanc plans to run for the leadership.
Trudeau, 53, had been able to fend off Liberal legislators worried about the polls and the loss of safe seats in two special elections.
But calls for him to step aside have grown since December, when Trudeau tried to demote Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, one of his closest cabinet allies, after she pushed back against his proposals for more spending.
Freeland quit instead and penned a letter accusing Trudeau of "political gimmicks" rather than focusing on what was best for the country.
Trudeau propelled the Liberals to power in 2015 promising "sunny ways" and a progressive agenda that promoted the rights of women and a promise to fight climate change.
But the everyday realities of governing gradually wore him down and like many Western leaders, the need to deal with the effects of the pandemic ate up much of his time.
Although Ottawa spent heavily to protect consumers and businesses, racking up record budget deficits, this provided little protection from public anger as prices soared.
A botched immigration policy led to hundreds of thousands of arrivals, straining an already overheated housing market.

Big week for news about “mountain lions wandering back into historic habitat where they were once persecuted to extinction” in February 2023.

Excerpt from this article: Officials at the San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department are asking others and the surrounding areas to be cautious about potential mountain lions in Central Texas. Officials said the message comes after the department received a call about a potential sighting of a mountain lion at Upper Purgatory Creek Natural Area in San Marcos on Sunday, February 12. [...] In Central Texas, it’s extremely rare to see a mountain lion in person, according to a report from the San Antonio Express-News. [...] Only one mountain lion has been confirmed in Bexar County in the past decade, on November 24, 2013, according to TPWD. [End of excerpt.]

Excerpt from this article: A Nebraska mountain lion that found itself in a sanctuary in Indiana after a 700-mile journey through four states is now looking for one last souvenir: a name. Back in the fall, the big cat made its way from the scenic Niobrara River valley all the way to suburban Springfield, Illinois, according to the GPS tracker that Nebraska Game and Parks had tagged it with a year prior. "A lot of people were watching him," said [the director of an “exotic feline rescue center”] in Center Point, Indiana, where the mountain lion has been since October. When the lion overstayed its welcome near Springfield, it was sedated by federal wildlife officials, who offered to return it to Nebraska. Nebraska declined.’ [...] "I'm incredibly impressed with this animal; he crossed both the Missouri and Mississippi rivers [...]." [End of excerpt.]

Ozarks and Missouri:
Tumblr media
Headline and screenshot from: Julia Wilson. “Mountain lions in Missouri? We’re seeing more than usual this winter.” Columbia Missourian. 16 February 2023.
Excerpt from this article: Footage from a trail camera taken Jan. 3 confirmed that a roaming mountain lion made a rare appearance in northern Boone County. Since then, the Missouri Department of Conservation documented three additional sightings around the state last month — one in Callaway County, another in Montgomery County and a third that was hit by a vehicle south of St. Louis.  Reports of mountain lions, also known as cougars, pumas and panthers, have increased over the past decade in the state. Between 2013 and 2022, a total of 65 were counted around Missouri. Compare that to the years between 1994 and 2006, when only 12 were spotted. [...] The animals may come from an established colony in the Black Hills, cross Nebraska and wander into Missouri, according to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Missouri’s extensive forest coverage, which includes 35% of state acreage, then becomes an ideal destination for the animals. Mountain lions have roamed Missouri since pre-settlement times. Their range crosses the western hemisphere from Canada to southern Chile. [...] Although they are seen across the state, over half of all sightings have been documented within 40 miles of Mark Twain National Forest in southeast Missouri. [...] Trophy hunting by early colonists wiped out most of the population east of the Mississippi River. [...] Except for the recent encounter in Franklin County where a lion was hit by a vehicle, the last documented human contact occurred in December 2021 during another vehicle collision. Obscure Animation Subject #160: Glitter Force
Remember Pretty Cure? It’s an awesome anime franchise with a bunch of action, memorable characters and beautiful animation. Now, the series had different incarnations per year but the core heart is still the same. Now, what if I told you the series was dubbed before? The first season of the first incarnation did get its own English dub simply named Pretty Cure, season 2 wasn’t dubbed unfortunately. However, that was only in Canada. It wasn’t introduced in the States until 2015, when Saban and Netflix created an English dub based on Smile Pretty Cure!, under the title Glitter Force.
This title change was actually met with backlash among Pretty Cure fans, as the first season of the original was dubbed with the Pretty Cure name attached. However, this could be understandable in my perspective as different incarnations of Pretty Cure usually have different protagonists. While the original series had 48 episodes lasting from February 5, 2012 to January 27, 2013, this dub had 8 episodes cut and was split into two seasons, lasting from December 18, 2015 to August 26, 2016. Although 8 episodes isn’t the majority of the series, it resulted in plot holes with character development lost. You wanna know why 8 episodes have been cut? It’s because Saban want this dub to look AMERICANIZED, REMOVING JAPANESE REFERENCES, AND EDITING OR REMOVING EMOTIONAL SCENES JUST TO MAKE IT APPEAL TO LITTLE KIDS! Does that sound familiar to what 4Kids did to One Piece? I mean sure, the series is targeted at kids, and its original Japanese version did originally air on TV Asahi on Sunday mornings where children would be watching, but that’s because what Japan views kid shows is actually different when compared to the US. I’m actually okay if the names were changed as long as the content isn’t altered much, and yet there's a lot of alterations resulting in a lot of plot holes and character development being lost.
Really aside from the terrible Americanizing and cuts, the voice-acting is god-awfully annoying and don’t fit the characters at all. There are also very unnecessary pop culture references like a reference to The Wizard of Oz in one episode. It also tries to hard to be cool and hip with kids with slang such as "besties", "epic win", and "selfies". There’s also some unnecessary screen dimming as a way to reduce seizures but it ends up being a distraction, and besides, the original Japanese version wasn’t flashy due to the Dennō Senshi Porygon incident. So yeah, pretty bad. There are some good things it did like introduce Pretty Cure to a Western audience, and some of changes actually making sense such as in episode 9 were in the farewell note the class gives to Lily, Cornelius (the artist who bullied Lily in episode 3) apologizes for making her cry, something that was never done in the original, but it’s not saying much. Although it was panned by critics, the series did successful enough to the point where Saban decided to dub the next Pretty Cure series under the name Glitter Force Doki Doki.
The original version was titled as Doki Doki! Pretty Cure, which lasted for 49 episodes airing on TV Asahi from February 3, 2013 to January 26, 2014, in the same timeslot as its predecessor. Saban produced the English dub under the Glitter Force Doki Doki name, lasting from August 18 to November 10, 2017. It carries many of the same issues its predecessor had, awful Americanization, bad voice-acting, dimming in some scenes amongst other reasons. However, it’s actually a lot worse when compared to its predecessor, as it actually has little to no connection to it, I mean the shows are mainly standalone aside from the Pretty Cure branding, none of the events in the previous series get mentioned, at all. And just when you thought that 8 episodes getting cut off from its predecessor is bad enough, well, this dub cuts a stunning 19 EPISODES FROM THE ORIGINAL VERSION, NOW BRINGING IN JUST 30 EPISODES! Some were even cut because they had too many references to Japanese culture. This caused even more continuity errors and missing character development. In response to the failure of the series, Saban filed for bankruptcy, selling most of its assets to Hasbro, and shuttered operations on July 2, 2018. Hasbro still owned the English rights until licensing for both series expired by 2024, resulting in Netflix removing them from the service. Toei now owns the full rights to both series, indicating that both series will be streaming on Crunchyroll English subbed in the future.
It’s no wonder that Saban had to be killed off really, and it’s a shame because they gave us classics like Digimon and Power Rangers. Too bad its founder, Haim Saban, is a complete homophobe and is also pro-Israel. Remember, SAVE PALESTINE FOLKS!

Canadian Grand Prix: Max Verstappen would like Fernando Alonso to win if he cannot
Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso have been on the podium together five times so far this season Venue: Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal Dates: 16-18 June Coverage: Live text updates and radio commentary of all sessions on the BBC Sport website & app, with live commentary of the race on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds app from 19:00 BST on Sunday. Full details Max Verstappen says that if he cannot win any race this year, he would like to see Fernando Alonso win it instead. Verstappen's Red Bull team have won all seven races so far this year and he says it is possible they could win them all. But the Dutchman said: "If you ask me one driver who I would like to see win a race, it's him." Verstappen, who leads the drivers' championship by 53 points, said Alonso "deserves it - he is a real racer". Alonso, a two-time champion with Renault in 2005 and 2006, last won a race for Ferrari in 2013. He spent four uncompetitive years with McLaren from 2015-18, stepped away from Formula 1 for two years to compete in endurance racing and at Indianapolis, before returning with Alpine in 2021 and then moving to Aston Martin for 2023. He is third in the championship and has finished on the podium in all but two races so far this year. Verstappen said: "I like him. He never gave up and you can see he loves the sport. Sometimes, after so many years of only having a car that is capable of driving in the midfield, maybe you lose a bit of that love but he is a real racer. He is an animal." Alonso said he was optimistic that Aston Martin would be more competitive in Canada this weekend than they were at the last race in Spain, when they had their weakest performance of the season. "It should be a good weekend," said Alonso, who qualified his Alpine second on the grid in the rain in Montreal last year, with wet weather predicted again for Saturday. "But we also had expectations in Barcelona and we didn't perform that race. We have a couple of new parts. Hopefully we can be a little bit more competitive than Barcelona." Verstappen is hot favourite to win on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Sunday and a victory would be the 41st of his career, drawing him level with Ayrton Senna's total, with just Alain Prost, Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton ahead. Verstappen said it was impossible to compare the two achievements. "People always have different kind of careers," he said. "Maybe some drivers get into a race-winning car sooner than others. Nowadays, we have more races than back in the day so I never really look at the number but as a kid I would never have imagined to be in that list. It is an amazing career for sure but you can't compare it." Verstappen said he understood why those watching F1 would be finding his domination of the sport a turn-off. "It is nice sometimes to have good competition," he sad. "For the sport in general, I understand of course if people get a bit bored if only one team is dominating. We have seen it also in the past with Mercedes and Ferrari and Red Bull. "For sure, I hope that more teams can get together. At least then, even if you have a little issue or whatever or you can't get the set-up fully at 100%, there is another team to win. "It is all about hard work. I appreciated what they were doing. It was super impressive at the time. I never really felt you had to stop that. It was all about trying to work harder and catch up. via BBC Sport - Formula 1 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/

Justin Trudeau resigns as Canadian prime minister
🤥🥳🤥
Justin Trudeau has resigned as leader of Canada’s governing party and suspended parliament for three months following an open revolt by his MPs over the soaring cost of food and the country’s housing crisis.
The Canadian prime minister said he made the decision after discussing his future over dinner with his children on Sunday evening.
Mr Trudeau also confirmed he plans to stay on as party leader until the Liberals find a successor and that he has prorogued parliament, effectively suspending its operations until March 24.
It comes after his finance minister and key ally Chrystia Freeland quit over disagreements surrounding how the Canadian government should respond to the threat of sweeping tariffs from Donald Trump’s incoming administration.

Mr Trudeau subsequently announced a major shake-up to his cabinet, changing a third of his team in a bid to settle the political turmoil.
Before Christmas, Mr Trudeau faced a mini revolt by 24 MPs following the shock resignation of Chrystia Freeland, the deputy prime minister, finance minister and long-time ally to the prime minister.

For example, Trade Promotion Authority expired in 2007, as the chairman has pointed out. As a result, our trade negotiators lack the authority necessary to negotiate and conclude new trade agreements. Unfortunately, there has been no real effort by President Obama to secure TPA renewal. Members of Congress have fought to fix this problem. We pushed to for a vote on TPA renewal on the Senate floor 21 months ago. Unfortunately, that effort failed, largely due to lack of support from our Senate Democratic colleagues. To me, this shows that presidential engagement on TPA renewal is vital. Without the President's active leadership and public support for TPA, it is hard to see how our current efforts to renew. https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/blog/2015/04/16/bringing-trade-agreements-21st-century Bringing Trade Agreements into the 21st Century APRIL 16, 2015 https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/biden-raises-record-26-million-at-star-studded-new-york-campaign-event Result: Mar 29, 2024 Biden raises record $26 million at star-studded New York campaign event

His support, along with Jacques Parizeau played a role in Brian Mulroney's dominance in Quebec during the election. Đứng ở vị trí tầm Global Leadership, quốc gia đang được thử thách trong điều kiện: 1/ Canada's economy suffered a deep recession from March 1990 through May 1992, as it dealt with the fallout from tight monetary policy (forced through high inflation), a lagging response to technological change from Canadian firms, and fiscal belt tightening amid very large budget deficits. 2/ Black Wednesday, or the 1992 sterling crisis, was a financial crisis that occurred on 16 September 1992 when the UK Government was forced to withdraw sterling from the (first) European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM I), following a failed attempt to keep its exchange rate above the lower limit required for ERM participation. Lẽ tất nhiên, 1995 Quebec referendum dù có thành công thì vô ý nghĩa về pháp luật quốc tế. Như vậy, phương án gỡ bỏ status mấu chốt là Clarity Act (French: Loi sur la clarté référendaire), để là cơ sở pháp lý vững chắc cho On November 27, 2006, the House of Commons passed a resolution recognizing Québec as a nation. This resolution read as follows: "That this House recognize that the Québécois form a nation within a united Canada."

The 1990 Liberal Party of Canada leadership election was held on 23 June 1990 in Calgary, Alberta. The party chose former Deputy Prime Minister Jean Chrétien as its new leader, replacing the outgoing leader, former Prime Minister John Turner. https://youtu.be/CrT8HLP0M18?feature=shared https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_Liberal_Party_of_Canada_leadership_election https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_Canadian_federal_election
Despite the Liberals more than doubling their seat count from 38 to 83, the results were considered a disappointment for Turner, after polls in mid-campaign predicted a Liberal government. In an ironic reversal of most prior federal elections, the Liberals were kept out of power by their inability to make any headway into the overwhelming Tory majority in Quebec. Indeed, the Liberals actually lost five seats in Quebec. This second election loss sealed Turner's fate; he would eventually resign in 1990, and was succeeded by Jean Chrétien, who proved to be a more effective leader and when in government, accepted free trade with the United States and did not overturn CUSFTA. Despite the New Democratic Party enjoying their best result at the time (winning 43 seats), Ed Broadbent resigned as leader in 1989. Some NDP members were disappointed by the fact that they didn't become the Official Opposition.

Cụ thể: When Jean Chrétien won the leadership in 1990, he inherited a party that was disorganized and almost bankrupt. His support of the Conservatives’ Charlottetown Accord cost the Liberals in Quebec, but by concentrating on policy development and organization, the Chrétien Liberals were well prepared for the election of October 1993. Nếu xem xét kỹ 1988 Canadian federal election và 2006 Canadian federal election, sự thất bại của Liberal Party of Canada đều xảy ra khi lật đổ Jean Chrétien. https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/liberal-party The U.S.-Canada Softwood Lumber Agreement (SLA 2006), which was signed on September 12, 2006 and took effect on October 12, 2006, expired on October 12, 2015. https://www.cbp.gov/trade/priority-issues/trade-agreements/softwood-lumber https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_nationalism Quebec nationalism or Québécois nationalism is a feeling and a political doctrine that prioritizes cultural belonging to, the defence of the interests of, and the recognition of the political legitimacy of the Québécois nation. It has been a movement and a central issue in Quebec politics since the beginning of the 19th century. Québécois nationalism has seen several political, ideological and partisan variations and incarnations over the years. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Canadian_federal_election The 2006 Canadian federal election was held on January 23, 2006, to elect members to the House of Commons of Canada of the 39th Parliament of Canada. Harper formed the smallest minority government in Canadian history (in terms of proportion of seats), becoming prime minister. The New Democratic Party experienced a modest boost in support whereas the Bloc Québécois' seat count nearly stayed the same.
youtube
👄 Giữa Jean Chrétien và Brian Mulroney vẫn có điểm chung về mặt quản trị quốc gia, tuy nhiên, Jean Chrétien back up thêm Third Option (1972 pronouncement by Mitchell SHARP) để vượt qua khủng hoảng kinh tế 1997 Asian financial crisis, 1992 sterling crisis và Early 1990s recession. Trường phái của Jean Chrétien là không bảo thủ, vì quá cứng nhắc thì sẽ rơi vào tình trạng the fiscal imbalance — vertical and horizontal — within the Canadian federation.

Under its terms, Canadian lumber exports to the United States were limited to 14.7 billion board feet (34.7 million cubic meters) per year.

👄 Cái gốc bắt nguồn từ năm 1800s: The British North America Act received Royal Assent on 29th March 1867 and went into effect 1st July 1867. The Act divided the province of Canada into Quebec and Ontario - French and Indian War (1754–1763). Nhà Anglo và Franco, là ngang cơ nhau, kẻ thù của nhau mới hiểu nhau nhất. Canada Elections, luôn là mô hình thu nhỏ của Seven Years' War (1756–1763). Continuing colonial disputes between Britain and France in North America resulted in the outbreak of the French and Indian War in 1754. On March 18, 1985, at the Quebec Summit, I joined Prime Minister Mulroney in endorsing a Trade Declaration with the objective of liberalizing energy trade, including crude oil, between the United States and Canada. Both Governments recognized the substantial benefits that would ensue from broadened crude oil transfers and exchanges between these two historic trading partners and allies. These benefits would include the increased availability of reliable energy sources, economic efficiencies, and material enhancements to the energy security of both countries. Following this Declaration, Canada declared that it would permit Canadian crude oil to be freely exported to the United States effective June 1, 1985.

👄 Nếu 1988 Canadian federal election là Jean Chrétien ra đối kháng với Brian Mulroney, chắc chắn sẽ thắng, tuy nhiên, John Turner lại chơi chiêu để tranh thủ vị trí leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and leader of the Official Opposition from 1984 to 1990.
Tumblr media
Hơn nhau chỉ có 7,000 phiếu, tạm ước tính là 1% - 5%, mà có thể lật ngược thế cờ ngay phút 99.9 🤣😂 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_Canadian_federal_election https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_Landry Bernard Landry GOQ (French: [bɛʁnaʁ lɑ̃dʁi]; March 9, 1937 – November 6, 2018) was a Canadian politician who served as the 28th premier of Quebec from 2001 to 2003. A member of the Parti Québécois (PQ), he led the party from 2001 to 2005, also serving as the leader of the Opposition from 2003 to 2005. During the 1988 Canadian federal election, Landry backed the Free Trade Agreement. His support, along with Jacques Parizeau played a role in Brian Mulroney's dominance in Quebec during the election. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1958_Canadian_federal_election The 1958 Canadian federal election was held to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 24th Parliament of Canada on March 31, 1958, just nine months after the 23rd election. It transformed Prime Minister John Diefenbaker's minority into the largest majority government in Canadian history and the second-largest percentage of the popular vote. Although the Tories would surpass their 1958 seat total in the 1984 election, the 1958 result (achieved in a smaller House) remains unmatched both in terms of percentage of seats (78.5%) and the size of the government majority over all opposition parties (a 151-seat majority). Voter turnout was 79.4%. The lag between changes to international benchmark prices and domestic prices paid by Australian farmers is due to several factors, including: the time between energy production and its transformation into an input product the need to negotiate new contracts at the reduced pricing levels ongoing strength of the US dollar, which increases the cost of energy imports.

Canada PM Trudeau to announce resignation as early as Monday, Globe and Mail reports
Jan 5 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce as early as Monday that he will resign as Liberal Party Leader, The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday, citing three sources.
The sources told the Globe and Mail that they don't know definitely when Trudeau will announce his plans to leave but said they expect it will happen before a key national caucus meeting on Wednesday.
It remains unclear whether Trudeau will leave immediately or stay on as prime minister until a new leader is selected, the report said.
Trudeau took over as Liberal leader in 2013 when the party was in deep trouble and had been reduced to third place in the House of Commons for the first time.
😁Let's hope the Globe & Mail got it right and Trudeau is gone, don't want to see that ponce in the news ever again!

Mrs. Roper Returns to Dragon Con
by Jen “Lil’ Bit” Schleusner
Come and knock on our door
For the second year in a row, the Mrs. Roper Romp took over Sunday night at Dragon Con. I must admit, it’s a refreshing change of pace to see the confused looks on attendees’ faces as they try to figure out what characters this lively group in curly wigs and caftans are, instead of the usual “What anime or video game is that from?”
Full disclosure before we dive in, as of a few weeks ago the originator of Mrs. Roper at DC, Dee Coble, has passed the baton to myself. So I am now one of the leads for the group and will help to plan next year and beyond’s festivities and group photo.
2024 Ropers, photo by Tres Indermark
Who is Mrs. Roper?
For the uninitiated, or those wondering why and how Mrs. Roper has become so popular, here’s a bit of backstory. The viral trend of “Roper Romps” is a fun and nostalgic homage to Helen Roper, the character from the 1970s and 1980s sitcoms Three’s Company and The Ropers. Helen Roper, played by Audra Lindley, was known for her vibrant caftans, curly red (or sometimes strawberry blonde) hair, and chunky costume jewelry.
Where did the Roper Romp come from?
The origins of the Romp go back to 2013 during the Southern Decadence parade in New Orleans, where a group of 50 people dressed up as Mrs. Roper. Since then, it has grown in popularity, with events popping up across the United States and Canada.
What happens at a Romp, you might ask? Participants, often referred to as “Helens” regardless of gender, dress up in Mrs. Roper’s iconic style and gather for pub crawls, parties, and parades. These events are known for their carefree, vibrant energy, and they’re often shared widely on social media. Increasingly, it’s not just Mrs. Roper you’ll see; participants come dressed as Stanley, Jack, Chrissy, the staff of the Regal Beagle, Mr. Furley, and more. (Although, come to think of it, I’ve yet to see a Janet!)

Why Mrs. Roper?
Part of what makes Mrs. Roper such a standout character is her unapologetic nature. She speaks her mind, never lets her husband Stanley’s curmudgeonly attitude get her down, and doesn’t care what others think of her. She embraces aging gracefully with a carefree, IDGAF attitude. And, rare for her time, she displayed a sense of sexual agency to younger generations, owning her desires without shame.
Mrs. Roper has become a symbol of fun and freedom, especially for older women who admire her free-spirited, unapologetic attitude. The trend has also been embraced by the LGBTQIA+ community for its playful subversion of traditional gender roles. And as a bonus, at Dragon Con? Caftans are incredibly comfortable, and the possibilities for creative mashups are endless. Various Mrs. Ropers seen this year: The Stanley Hotel, Nightmare Before Christmas, Star Wars, our beloved resident Klinger and more.
The Mrs. Roper Romp is a great example of how a beloved TV character can inspire a joyful and inclusive community event.
We’ve been waiting for you!
What could have been a one-off event at Dragon Con has continued to grow. In 2023, the inaugural Romp had around 200 participants with an increase this year. Social media numbers tell the same story: at the time of writing, the con-specific Facebook group Mrs. Roper Does Dragon Con has 650 members eager for next year’s Romp, while the larger, original Mrs. Roper Romp group, has 63.6K members and the International Order of Mrs. Ropers boasts 24.5K.
And you don’t have to wait until next year’s Con to join the fun. Roper Romps are increasingly popping up in more cities and states, and there’s a good chance there’s a local chapter near you. So whether you venture out to a Romp in your area or join us at Dragon Con in 2025, grab your caftan, curly wig, and get ready to shout “Hi Helen!” alongside hundreds of like-minded folks.
