Big week for news about âmountain lions wandering back into historic habitat where they were once persecuted to extinctionâ in February 2023.
---
Central Texas:
Headline and screenshots from: Priscilla Aguirre. âPotential mountain lion sighting in San Antonio area raises awareness.â My San Antonio. 14 February 2023.
Excerpt from this article: Officials at the San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department are asking others and the surrounding areas to be cautious about potential mountain lions in Central Texas. Officials said the message comes after the department received a call about a potential sighting of a mountain lion at Upper Purgatory Creek Natural Area in San Marcos on Sunday, February 12. [...] In Central Texas, itâs extremely rare to see a mountain lion in person, according to a report from the San Antonio Express-News. [...] Only one mountain lion has been confirmed in Bexar County in the past decade, on November 24, 2013, according to TPWD. [End of excerpt.]
---
Great Plains and Nebraska:
Headline and screenshot from: Damon Bennett. âNebraska mountain lion now looking for a name after 700-mile journey.â Lincoln Journal-Star. 16 February 2023.
Excerpt from this article: A Nebraska mountain lion that found itself in a sanctuary in Indiana after a 700-mile journey through four states is now looking for one last souvenir: a name. Back in the fall, the big cat made its way from the scenic Niobrara River valley all the way to suburban Springfield, Illinois, according to the GPS tracker that Nebraska Game and Parks had tagged it with a year prior. "A lot of people were watching him," said [the director of an âexotic feline rescue centerâ] in Center Point, Indiana, where the mountain lion has been since October. When the lion overstayed its welcome near Springfield, it was sedated by federal wildlife officials, who offered to return it to Nebraska. Nebraska declined.â [...] "I'm incredibly impressed with this animal; he crossed both the Missouri and Mississippi rivers [...]." [End of excerpt.]
---
Ozarks and Missouri:
Headline and screenshot from: Julia Wilson. âMountain lions in Missouri? Weâre seeing more than usual this winter.â Columbia Missourian. 16 February 2023.
Excerpt from this article: Footage from a trail camera taken Jan. 3 confirmed that a roaming mountain lion made a rare appearance in northern Boone County. Since then, the Missouri Department of Conservation documented three additional sightings around the state last month â one in Callaway County, another in Montgomery County and a third that was hit by a vehicle south of St. Louis. Reports of mountain lions, also known as cougars, pumas and panthers, have increased over the past decade in the state. Between 2013 and 2022, a total of 65 were counted around Missouri. Compare that to the years between 1994 and 2006, when only 12 were spotted. [...] The animals may come from an established colony in the Black Hills, cross Nebraska and wander into Missouri, according to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Missouriâs extensive forest coverage, which includes 35% of state acreage, then becomes an ideal destination for the animals. Mountain lions have roamed Missouri since pre-settlement times. Their range crosses the western hemisphere from Canada to southern Chile. [...] Although they are seen across the state, over half of all sightings have been documented within 40 miles of Mark Twain National Forest in southeast Missouri. [...] Trophy hunting by early colonists wiped out most of the population east of the Mississippi River. [...] Except for the recent encounter in Franklin County where a lion was hit by a vehicle, the last documented human contact occurred in December 2021 during another vehicle collision. [End of excerpt.]

Canadian Grand Prix: Max Verstappen would like Fernando Alonso to win if he cannot
Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso have been on the podium together five times so far this season Venue: Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal Dates: 16-18 June Coverage: Live text updates and radio commentary of all sessions on the BBC Sport website & app, with live commentary of the race on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds app from 19:00 BST on Sunday. Full details Max Verstappen says that if he cannot win any race this year, he would like to see Fernando Alonso win it instead. Verstappen's Red Bull team have won all seven races so far this year and he says it is possible they could win them all. But the Dutchman said: "If you ask me one driver who I would like to see win a race, it's him." Verstappen, who leads the drivers' championship by 53 points, said Alonso "deserves it - he is a real racer". Alonso, a two-time champion with Renault in 2005 and 2006, last won a race for Ferrari in 2013. He spent four uncompetitive years with McLaren from 2015-18, stepped away from Formula 1 for two years to compete in endurance racing and at Indianapolis, before returning with Alpine in 2021 and then moving to Aston Martin for 2023. He is third in the championship and has finished on the podium in all but two races so far this year. Verstappen said: "I like him. He never gave up and you can see he loves the sport. Sometimes, after so many years of only having a car that is capable of driving in the midfield, maybe you lose a bit of that love but he is a real racer. He is an animal." Alonso said he was optimistic that Aston Martin would be more competitive in Canada this weekend than they were at the last race in Spain, when they had their weakest performance of the season. "It should be a good weekend," said Alonso, who qualified his Alpine second on the grid in the rain in Montreal last year, with wet weather predicted again for Saturday. "But we also had expectations in Barcelona and we didn't perform that race. We have a couple of new parts. Hopefully we can be a little bit more competitive than Barcelona." Verstappen is hot favourite to win on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Sunday and a victory would be the 41st of his career, drawing him level with Ayrton Senna's total, with just Alain Prost, Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton ahead. Verstappen said it was impossible to compare the two achievements. "People always have different kind of careers," he said. "Maybe some drivers get into a race-winning car sooner than others. Nowadays, we have more races than back in the day so I never really look at the number but as a kid I would never have imagined to be in that list. It is an amazing career for sure but you can't compare it." Verstappen said he understood why those watching F1 would be finding his domination of the sport a turn-off. "It is nice sometimes to have good competition," he sad. "For the sport in general, I understand of course if people get a bit bored if only one team is dominating. We have seen it also in the past with Mercedes and Ferrari and Red Bull. "For sure, I hope that more teams can get together. At least then, even if you have a little issue or whatever or you can't get the set-up fully at 100%, there is another team to win. "It is all about hard work. I appreciated what they were doing. It was super impressive at the time. I never really felt you had to stop that. It was all about trying to work harder and catch up. via BBC Sport - Formula 1 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/

Mrs. Roper Returns to Dragon Con
New Post has been published on https://esonetwork.com/mrs-roper-returns-to-dragon-con/
Mrs. Roper Returns to Dragon Con
by Jen âLilâ Bitâ Schleusner
Come and knock on our door
For the second year in a row, the Mrs. Roper Romp took over Sunday night at Dragon Con. I must admit, itâs a refreshing change of pace to see the confused looks on attendeesâ faces as they try to figure out what characters this lively group in curly wigs and caftans are, instead of the usual âWhat anime or video game is that from?â
Full disclosure before we dive in, as of a few weeks ago the originator of Mrs. Roper at DC, Dee Coble, has passed the baton to myself. So I am now one of the leads for the group and will help to plan next year and beyondâs festivities and group photo.
2024 Ropers, photo by Tres Indermark
Who is Mrs. Roper?
For the uninitiated, or those wondering why and how Mrs. Roper has become so popular, hereâs a bit of backstory. The viral trend of âRoper Rompsâ is a fun and nostalgic homage to Helen Roper, the character from the 1970s and 1980s sitcoms Threeâs Company and The Ropers. Helen Roper, played by Audra Lindley, was known for her vibrant caftans, curly red (or sometimes strawberry blonde) hair, and chunky costume jewelry.
Where did the Roper Romp come from?
The origins of the Romp go back to 2013 during the Southern Decadence parade in New Orleans, where a group of 50 people dressed up as Mrs. Roper. Since then, it has grown in popularity, with events popping up across the United States and Canada.
What happens at a Romp, you might ask? Participants, often referred to as âHelensâ regardless of gender, dress up in Mrs. Roperâs iconic style and gather for pub crawls, parties, and parades. These events are known for their carefree, vibrant energy, and theyâre often shared widely on social media. Increasingly, itâs not just Mrs. Roper youâll see; participants come dressed as Stanley, Jack, Chrissy, the staff of the Regal Beagle, Mr. Furley, and more. (Although, come to think of it, Iâve yet to see a Janet!)

Why Mrs. Roper?
Part of what makes Mrs. Roper such a standout character is her unapologetic nature. She speaks her mind, never lets her husband Stanleyâs curmudgeonly attitude get her down, and doesnât care what others think of her. She embraces aging gracefully with a carefree, IDGAF attitude. And, rare for her time, she displayed a sense of sexual agency to younger generations, owning her desires without shame.
Mrs. Roper has become a symbol of fun and freedom, especially for older women who admire her free-spirited, unapologetic attitude. The trend has also been embraced by the LGBTQIA+ community for its playful subversion of traditional gender roles. And as a bonus, at Dragon Con? Caftans are incredibly comfortable, and the possibilities for creative mashups are endless. Various Mrs. Ropers seen this year: The Stanley Hotel, Nightmare Before Christmas, Star Wars, our beloved resident Klinger and more.
The Mrs. Roper Romp is a great example of how a beloved TV character can inspire a joyful and inclusive community event.
Weâve been waiting for you!
What could have been a one-off event at Dragon Con has continued to grow. In 2023, the inaugural Romp had around 200 participants with an increase this year. Social media numbers tell the same story: at the time of writing, the con-specific Facebook group Mrs. Roper Does Dragon Con has 650 members eager for next yearâs Romp, while the larger, original Mrs. Roper Romp group, has 63.6K members and the International Order of Mrs. Ropers boasts 24.5K.
And you donât have to wait until next yearâs Con to join the fun. Roper Romps are increasingly popping up in more cities and states, and thereâs a good chance thereâs a local chapter near you. So whether you venture out to a Romp in your area or join us at Dragon Con in 2025, grab your caftan, curly wig, and get ready to shout âHi Helen!â alongside hundreds of like-minded folks.
