I have a small part in the 1987 television movie (failed pilot) version of The Man Who Fell To Earth. Lewis Smith played the titular character. Beverly D'Angelo played my mom, his love interest. (Fun Star Trek connection: Bob Picardo is also in it).
My character was a Troubled Youth, which I gotta tell you was not a stretch for me at all. I was deeply, deeply hurting at the time we made it. I was struggling not to suffocate on all the emotional and financial burdens my mom put on my shoulders, and fully aware of just how much my dad hated and resented me. You need a kid who doesn't want to be an actor, whose eyes can't hide the pain? I'm your guy.
Anyway, one of the scenes I was in took place in a record store, where Troubled Youth steals some albums, before he is chased by the cops and saved by the Man Who Fell To Earth, who uses a glowing crystal to save his life from ... some scratches on his face.
We filmed the interior of the record store at Sunset and La Brea, in what I think was a Warehouse, and at the end of the day, I was allowed to buy some records at a modest discount.
I was deep into my metal years, on my way from my punk years to my New Wave years, so I only bought metal albums. I know I bought more than I needed or could carry (I was making a point that I was allowed to spend my own money, mom), but the only ones I can clearly remember are:
Iron Maiden - Piece of Mind
Judas Priest - Turbo and Defenders of the Faith
W.A.S.P - The Last Command
(I know this was in March of 1987, because Turbo had just come out.)
Of those, Piece of Mind is the only one I never really stopped listening to, even through all the different it's-not-a-phase phases. I still listen to it, today.
Ever since I became an Adult with a Fancy Adult Record Player And All That Bullshit, I have kept my records in two places: stuff I want right now, and stuff I keep in the library because of Reasons.
Generally, records move in one direction toward the library, even if it takes years to happen. I just don't accumulate albums like I once did, because I'm Old and set in my ways.
Earlier today, I decided that I wanted to listen to an album while I cleaned up the kitchen, and because I wanted to make my life more interesting, I opened the library cabinet for the first time in at least five years.
There was the very same W.A.S.P album from that day in March, 1987. I don't have any of the others -- I looked -- but The Last Command was right there.
Before I really knew what I was doing, I put it on the Fancy Adult Record Player and dropped the needle.
I watched four decades of dust build up with a satisfying crackle, and there was something magical and beautiful about hearing all the skips and the scratches, realizing I remembered them from before.
The title track was just as great as I remembered it. It struck all the same chords in me that it did in the late nineteen hundreds. The rest of the first side was ... um. It just didn't connect with me, and for the few moments I spent trying to find a connection, I don't think it ever really did. I would remember.
But I did remember how much I loved making those mix tapes, and what a big part of them that song was. I did remember how empowering it felt to not just spend my own money that I earned doing work I didn't want to do, but to spend it on music my parents hated, right under their noses. I did remember how impressed Robby Lee was, when I showed him my extensive heavy metal album collection.
Remembering all of that, in one of those cinematic flashes of rapid cut visuals and sped up sounds, told me why I kept this record, while I gradually sold or replaced the other records I bought that day with CDs, then mp3s, then lossless digital files, before finally coming all the way back to records, where I started.
I didn't listen to the second side. I didn't need to. I took it off the Fancy Adult Record Player, and put it back into the library, next to the George Carlin records.

According to the description, this 1987 manor style home in Mcmurray, PA is newly remodeled to meet a Medieval Aesthetic. 6bds, 7ba, $999,900. Medieval? You tell me.
I do not recall the Medieval style having gold floral wallpaper.
Matching powder room.
I'm gonna say Italian Provincial, especially the gold angel above the fireplace.
Where the hell are they getting Medieval from?
Maybe the light fixture can loosely be called Medieval. I like the color of the double sink.
The cabinets and flooring are lovely. I like the black counters, also. Not sure about the wallpapered ceiling, though.
Wow, this is some fancy everyday dining area off the kitchen. When I saw the picture on the table, I thought it was an office.
This may be the fanciest laundry room I've ever seen.
Youch! Look at this dining room. Carved beams. There's a knight and stuff. I guess you could call this Medieval on Steroids.
Look at the bar. Wow, fancy Medieval style. They even have what looks like a church window from an architectural salvage yard. I'm disappointed that the rest of the house isn't like this.
Stunning wood in the office, plus a fireplace. Look at the ceiling. I imagine that this could be a library or den if you don't need an office.
The primary bedroom takes us back to the castles of Italy with the cherub mural on the ceiling.
Roman en-suite.
The bedrooms are very large. I wonder if this is the primary. It's very big and has a fireplace.
The en-suite has a vanity table and a marble tub surround.
Or, maybe this is the primary. I can't tell. The carpet needs to be stretched, there's an office in the corner and doors to the patio.
Look at the Zen statue in the niche and the and the etched mirrors. This is a serene retreat. This home's decor is all over the place, but that's okay.
A child's bedroom. Very sophisticated.
Interesting. An architectural salvage church pew and what looks like a confessional simulation.
Looks like we're in an attic family room.
Cool enclosed patio has a pool, hot tub, shrine, statues, sitting area, and a mural. Looks like a castle back here.
Very interesting home. I'd buy it. Looks like there's a tower- I wonder if there's a turret room.
.54 acre lot on a cul-de-sac.

Back side:
Some details - See You and It's called a heart in red:
This is my 7" DM singles collection, I put front and back side photos by the year of release order. I'm goint go buy three more rare singles tomorrow, I'll show them in another post (you can read full story here). I collect only original DM vinyls, I try to catch cheap pieces with a bit of luck. Some of sellers offer me lots of 12" maxi singles but I have to draw the line somewhere. I have only one, Live In Silence (11,5 minutes long version), I love it, I listened to it 100 times on youtube and it was very cheap because of the paper cover's bad condition. No CDs or DVDs - except... I found at the same sellers two late songs (Wrong; Only When I Lose Myself - see photos below), I sang this two songs endlessly times while I was practicing for karaoke party. And the DVD: I don't trust youtube as much as I trust something that is in my hand. I can watch my favourite videos anytime in the best quality.

Hey!
I majored in anth at a p awesome school for it (had a so fun class where we hands on used paleo to neo lithic techniques- from making stone tools to processing hides) but there wasn't much available for prehistoric art (+ I was a major switch from microbiology so bio anth, epidemiology and forensics stuff, made more sense with my course history). Been out of school for almost 10 years now and unfortunately doing nothing even remotely related, but I'm wanting to learn more about prehistoric art of all sorts. With search engines being overrun with AI misinfo I'm not really sure where to start other than Wikipedia. Do you have any favorite resources you'd be up for recommending?
Thanks a ton! Happy holidays, and may the new year be kind.
Hello! I should preface this with saying I am just someone with a general interest and not remotely an expert haha! Getting to do hands on stuff sounds really fun!
A lot of my reading has been restricted to Upper Palaeolithic Europe, and cave art at that, so I can't really recommend anything outside of that.
I've been concerned also with avoiding misinformation - there was a painting I saw a while ago where it was obvious the level of research involved was typing "Lascaux" into pinterest and just using whatever results came up (the art used was from Cueva de los Caballos and Mesolithic) and it's been driving me nuts. I've been sticking to books for information, almost everything I've read has been through Internet Archive, and majority are over 30 years old so could be outdated, can contradict each other, and should be noted are can be very racist.
Putting the list of everything under a read more as it's quite long, I hope there's something useful in amongst all of this! Happy holidays, I hope you have a good new year!
Books and other resources I've found useful in no particular order:
The Cave of Lascaux: The Final Photographs by Mario Ruspoli (1987) [Is on Internet Archive but currently unavailable, the German version is still up.] When Lascaux was closed to the public Mario Ruspoli was hired by the French govenment to document the entire cave on film and wrote this book afterwards. Even though it's focus is Lascaux I found it a good introduction to the topic of cave art. I have tried to find the footage online with little success so if anyone knows... do tell. This book brings you through the cave and gives a good idea of the layout and where paintings/engravings are in relation to each other. I would love if there was something like this for other caves but I'm not aware of anything 🤔
Lascaux Virtual Tour [Link here] The video isn't toally clear but it gives a good sense of the layout, and you can click the little 'i' icon to see clearer photos and get more details.
Images of the Ice Age by Paul Bahn and Jean Vertut (1988) [Internet Archive Link] This book is also a good starting point! There's also Journey Through the Ice Age which is the same book.
Cambridge Illustrated History of Cave Art by Paul Bahn (1998) [Internet Archive Link] I haven't gotten around to reading this yet but it appears to be a broader scope and not restricted to Europe.
Palaeolithic Cave Art by Peter J. Ucko and Andrée Rosenfeld (1967) The main appeal of this bok is that it goes through the different possible reasons for cave art. I had to buy a physical copy as I couldn't find it online.
Kindred: Neanderthal Life, Love, Death and Art by Rebecca Wragg Sykes (2020) [Aeon article link "Sheanderthal: Not all Neanderthals were ‘cavemen’: half were women. What can archaeologists tell us about how they lived?] Not solely focused on art but she does talk about what the neanderthals made including a large circular structure in Bruniquel Cave - there is footage of the cave in the recent netflix documentary Secrets of the Neanderthals (not great, at one point the narrator says neanderthals lived in the neolithic lmfao but the interviews with experts are interesting).
Don's Maps [Link here] Really great website. Some books will mention a painting/engraving/sculpture but no image, so my first place to check is Don's Maps as everything he includes is either from a book which will be referenced or from his own visits to caves.
The Neanderthal Museum Digital Archive [Link here] Despite the name is not exclusively Neanderthal, lots of photos of cave art in the Wendel Collection (including a photo of the one known instance of a saiga antelope in cave art that I hadn't been able to find a photo of before!).
There's also the Archaeology Podcast Network and sites like Academia.edu but I don't have any specific recommendations at present.

Tevan Advent calendar 2024 Day 3: Bones & "money can't buy me love but it can buy me [BLANK] “Make a wish Evan.” Tommy held a wishbone between his fingers, his free hand tugging lightly on the white pom pom at the bottom of his boyfriend's Santa hat. “A wish?” “It's tradition.” Or, Tevan have a Christmas meal with the Grant-Nash family
Find Advent stories here full story here or below the cut
Tommy slid out Evan's chair for him as the others mingled around Evan's dining table. “We really appreciate you hosting us Buckaroo.” Athena said, passing a carving knife to Bobby who had just pulled the turkey out of the oven. Behind her and Evan's backs, May caught Tommy's eye and made a whipped motion that both Tommy and Bobby who was determinedly checking that the turkey was cooked the full way through raised an eyebrow at.
“It's really no trouble.” Evan folded napkins with a wide smile, “I know it's not the same as being in the old house.”
“Harry, no peeking!” May pushed her seat back, marching over to where Harry was rifling through the stockings strung along the loft’s mezzanine railing.
“I want to see.”
“Those are for after dinner,” May stated, “we'll look at them later.”
Athena shook her head at her kids as the two devolved into bickering and Tommy's thumb found Evan’s hand where the other man let it rest after folding the last napkin into a swan. “It is nice to have us all together.”
“Make a wish Evan.” Tommy held a wishbone between his fingers, his free hand tugging lightly on the white pom pom at the bottom of his boyfriend's Santa hat.
“A wish?”
“It's tradition.”
“I know, it was brought over by the British.”
Tommy chuckles, “I love how much you know, Evan.”
“Even the random stuff?”
“Especially the random stuff.” Tommy kissed his cheek, offering the other side of the wishbone to him. “Tis the season, make a wish.”
Evan gripped the other half of the wishbone firmly. “Okay, ready?”
“1.” Tommy started the countdown.
“2.” Evan smiled softly.
“3.” They spoke together, tugging hard on their respective half of the wishbone.
As if in slow motion they watched the wishbone crack into two equally sized pieces and let out a laugh.
“Well look at that,” Tommy said.
“Yeah.”
“Guess we're both getting lucky.” Tommy hummed, twirling one of Evans curls around his finger.
Evan brought his lips to meet Tommy's in a tender kiss, his hand cupping the back of his neck. Tommy's hands slipped to his hips as Evan gently leant forward. Tommy broke the kiss just as gently, tugging Evan to him so that Evan's head rested in the space between his neck and shoulder.
“Hey lovebirds,” May called over from where the Grant-Nash’s were gathered around her laptop. “Maybe one of you knows the answer to this.”
Tommy smiles, “Go for it.”
“1987 Romantic Comedy starring Patrick Dempsey set in Tucson directed by Steve Rash.”
“That's ‘Can't buy me love’.” Tommy answered confidently, tucking Evan into his side.
“See I knew one of you would know it.” May typed something on her computer screen as the others crowded round her again.
Evan kissed Tommy on the cheek gently, “Well I for one I'm glad money can't buy me love.” His thumb stroked Tommy's cheek bone gently as he kept his tone soft, his world narrowed down to just them.
“Oh yeah?”
“Absolutely, you're better than anything I've seen in any shop. Besides maybe it can't buy me love but it can buy me all the ingredients to make all the sweet treats you're obsessed with.”
Tommy placed a peck on Evan's lips, “That is a good use of money.”
“I’m so glad you agree.”
Tommy just held him close, Evan felt his chest warm in contentment.

My ultimate film watchlist (1980s)
1930s-1940s | 1950s | 1960s-1970s | 1990s | 2000s | 2010s
Hello! This is part four of my ultimate film watchlist. To get the full explanation, please see part one until the 1930s-1940s link above. I assume you know what's going on by this point, so let's move on to the list!
The 80s holds a special place in my heart for films, tv, fashion, and beauty. The 80s definitely rivals that of the 50s in terms of quality of writing and filmography. I don't know where I would be if my mom had not been watching Dirty Dancing on our big tv when Patrick Swayze passed away. I don't think I would be so into films the way I am now. Please let me know if you think anything should be added to this list!
Also, I feel it should be said, I have not checked every single film for being soft-core pornography, so please be sure to look at reviews before watching any lesser-known films just to be sure it's appropriate for your viewing experience! If anything is seriously inappropriate, please let me know and I will add a warning or remove it from the list <3

Yesterday on the train I heard two middle school aged boys talking. They were on their way to the book fair, with their school class. "Maybe there's something cool you can buy," one said. "There's nothing cool there, it's a book fair!" the other replied. I snort-laughed so loud they noticed. Oh you young fools…
Anyway, anyway, I went there today, and as usual, dug my way through the antiquarian side. ^^ Here's my haul!
The first thing that caught my attention was an old book, from 1919… Finnish scifi! (from 1919! seriously!) Damn I wanted it, but it cost 120€. >_> Then I found another book from the same author, this one from 1922, and it was only 25€, so I got it. (Maybe it's so much cheaper cause there are also later editions available? That other one… you can't get it from anywhere. Even the library failed me. ;;)
At the Last Moment, is the title in English. It begins from the moment someone dies/has just died.
Then I found one Simak that I don't yet have! 💜 And damn I love these old covers! (I showed this to my friend, and she said, imagine cosplaying like that. Yep. XD)
Another favorite author, Ursula K. Le Guin. A short story collection.
And Leena Krohn is also among my favorites. I'd never even heard of this book though, and it came out in 1987. (So apparently it's not among her most popular ones, but whatever!)
And then, this. It was the author's name that caught my attention (a Finnish name). And it's something so utterly weird and random I just had to get it. XD
Seriously. Kalevala scifi? What the hell XD
And last but not least (or, umm, I guess it was the first thing I bought?) I got this badge XD Fits both the Covid times and my current RE obsession. ^^
