Spumoni
For the @tevanadvent2024 Day 16: Spumoni
Tommy opens his front door, surprised to find Evan on the other side. “Hey. I thought we were having movie night at your place?”
“Where were you last night?” Evan asks as shoulders his way past Tommy.
Tommy shuts the door and follows his boyfriend into the kitchen. “Last night? Did we have plans I forgot about?”
Evan leans against the counter and crosses his arms. “No.”
“Oookay,” Tommy drawls. “I was here, watching Dirty Dancing.”
“Oh, so you weren’t at LA’s oldest Italian restaurant?”
Tommy bites back a laugh. “Baby. I can explain.”
Evan taps his foot.
“I was craving spumoni.”
“And you went without me?”
Tommy laughs. “Evan. The last time I asked you to go…you said, and I quote, if Miceli’s was on fire, I wouldn’t call 911.”
“Yeah. Well. Maybe I would have wanted to split dessert. Did you ever think about that?”
Tommy opens the fridge, taking out a container, and handing it to Evan. “Yeah, I did.”
Evan looks at him in awe. “You saved half your spumoni for me?”
Tommy kisses his birthmark. “Of course I did. Now let’s go watch some movies.”

Buck can’t bake anymore.
He’s sick of it. Sick of lemon loaf waiting forever on the kitchen counter and of Baked Alaska melting in his fridge.
The sweet relief of the moment changed into bitter memories that feel like ash in his mouth now.
He can’t bake anymore. So he turned back to pasta, pancakes and omelette. Back to pans and spices and knives. He serves his meals at the firehouse, wiping his hands on his apron, nervously waiting for reactions. Because it seems to be good. But he can never be sure it’s good enough.
Will I ever be good enough for someone to stay?
“It’s really good, Buck,” Hen assures him. Chimney nods, his mouth full of lasagna. Bobby helps himself to a second serving already. Eddie licks sauce from the corner of his mouth, grins, and calls Buck a chef. “Is there something you’re not telling us?” He asks teasingly. “Were you offered a position at a 5-star restaurant?”
And Buck laughs dutifully. But inside, he still feels that ache that never quite goes away. It’s better now. But it’s still there. Not good enough. Not enough. Not enough for something that lasts forever. Not ...
“This smells delicious,” a new voice adds quietly behind him.
Buck’s head perks up. His breath hitches and his heart seems to stop for a whole beat before restarting at a more frantic pace. No. It can’t be. He can’t be here, right? Just … like that? Now?!
He slowly turns his head. And there he is. Tommy. He’s real.
He’s standing there, wearing his turnouts, wringing his hands, blue eyes flickering back and forth. And the first thing Buck feels is rage. Because … what the hell? Here? Now? Like this?
His first instinct is to yell. But he's frozen. Can’t decide what to say. Or do. He’s frozen. And after the initial shock, he has time to take Tommy in. Really take him in.
He looks ... drained. More gaunt than Buck has ever seen him. His hair is tousled and his posture expresses exhaustion. His eyes are redrimmed and his skin is a little too pale to pass as normal. In fact, Tommy looks like he's been through hell. Buck doesn't know what to think or feel. He just stares and Tommy fidgets and everyone around them is too quiet, the moment stretching until the silence roars in Buck's ears.
“Hey Tommy,” Chimney finally says, after swallowing a mouth full of lasagna, smiling after sharing a glance with Hen. “Are you … okay?”
So they can all see it too, Buck thinks. They can all see the numbness of terror in Tommy’s eyes. The too-thin line of his mouth. The ghostly paleness of his skin. They can all see it. Something happened. What happened? Or ... Is it the breakup? That angry part of Buck hopes it's the breakup. Hopes Tommy had his share of suffering, longing, wondering, breaking ... But he somehow feels like it's something different.
Tommy clears his throat. “I … I’m sorry. My phone is broken. I didn't want to intrude. But I drove by and I thought ..."
“Sit,” Buck says. Quietly. But sternly.
Tommy blinks. “I …”
“Sit. And eat.” Buck points at the free seat on the table. And - of course, it’s Tommy’s old place, he realises then. Sometimes it sends a chill down his back to think about the fact that he basically took Tommy’s place at the 118 only for them to meet years later. It could have been such a romantic fact. A string of fate connecting them through the 118. But … well. Tommy dumping him cut into that string like a knife.
Tommy is still hesitating. Looks like a deer in the headlights, a second away from turning away and running. Again. Just like he ran after he decided to end the relationship. Coward , Buck can’t help to think. That’s the angry part of him, he knows. The part that wants to punch walls, shatter glass and scream in Tommy’s face.
“You look like you could use some food,” Bobby says calmly. “Regain some energy,” Hen adds, matter-of-factly.
“It’s really good lasagna. You don’t want to miss it,” Chimney chimes in. “Especially not after a long shift.”
“I think I just heard your stomach growl, man,” Eddie says, pointing his fork at Tommy.
“Okay,” Tommy says, finally, his shoulders sagging with the relief of the decision.
He sits. Buck loads a massive lasagna heap on a plate and puts it in front of Tommy. After a moment and another subtle glance between Buck and Tommy, everyone starts talking again. They do their best to be a distraction. To make it seem like this is a normal thing. As if nothing happened. And Tommy eats. He finishes his plate. Then eats some more. He makes some small talk, smiles a few times, nods and even laughs one time about something Eddie tells him. But.
But Buck sees what no one else sees. He sees behind the facade of facial expressions. And what he observes makes the worry nag at him with sharpening teeth. It’s the way the smile never reaches Tommy’s eyes. They remain distant. Clouded and numb. Something happened. Something bad. And of course, Tommy isn’t talking about it. But it was bad enough to have him come here. Just like that. So it has to be really bad.
Eventually, Tommy clears his throat and pushes his chair back. “Thank you for the food. It was really good. I should go home now.”
“I’m going to drive you,” Buck says. It’s a heartbeat decision. Almost surprising himself. But it’s the right thing to do. He can feel it.
Tommy looks startled. “You … you don’t have to.”
Buck sets his jaw. “I want to.”
“My truck …”
“You can pick it up tomorrow,” Buck says. “Not a problem.”
The others fell silent and are watching the conversation between them, not saying anything.
Tommy swallows, his discomfort clearly growing now that so many people are looking at him. He’s already pushed his hands into the pockets of his jacket. Buck knows why. Of course, he does. He knows Tommy is fidgeting with something, trying to calm his nerves. Oh. He knows this man so well, doesn’t he? But apparently not well enough. Not well enough to be with him forever, like he imagined. The rage curls around Buck’s heart again. “Alright,” Tommy finally says, giving in.

Title: Pilot
Rating: M
Warnings: Severe injuries, Hospitals

Pilot
The call came during a rare moment of peace in Station 118’s rec room. Buck was sprawled on the couch, half-watching some old action movie, when his phone buzzed on the table. It wasn’t unusual for him to get messages during downtime, but the name on the screen made his stomach drop.
Harbour/217 🚁
He sprang up and snatched the phone from the table, his heart already racing.
“Hello?”
“Evan Buckley?”
“Yes, this is him. Who’s this?”
“This is Captain Ramirez from the 217. I’m calling about firefighter Kinard... there’s been an accident. His helicopter went down. He’s being airlifted to the Presbyterian right now.”

Buck has never been good at staying in one place, but moving to an old rickety cabin in The-Middle-of-Nowhere, Oregon might a stretch, even for him. That is, until he meets Tommy, who put down roots ten years ago and frequently toes the line between settled down and root-bound.

Bucktommy Advent: day eight

🎄 🎄 🎄
December 8th
A day-drinking sesh with Hen seemed like a good idea—until she turns on Buck.
“You didn’t tell us you asked him to move in,” Hen chides. “No wonder he panicked.”
“Just help me fix it. Please?” Buck looks imploringly at Hen across her dining table. “He said first relationships never last. Is that true?”
“Statistically? Most people don’t find forever love on the first try. Or Tommy’s first try might have ended badly.”
“Why was it so hard for him to open up?” Buck groans.
Hen shrugs. “Self-doubt, probably. Maybe he was born with it. Maybe it’s the gay trauma.”

It's love
“Evan said you were an ER nurse that's close enough.” “See you listen to him, most people get annoyed by him without listening. What you think you're suffering from, what you're experiencing, there's no cure.” Tommy laughed, “No?” Tevan Advent 2024 Prompts: Hope & "I'm no doctor but I'm pretty sure what you're suffering from is called" [BLANK] A fun flirty shopping trip leads to Maddie and Tommy bonding
Find it on Ao3 here or below the cut.
“You are simply dazzling tonight.”
Tommy’s hand snaked around Evan's waist, his fingers tapping out a rhythm on the other's hip. Evan let out a content sigh as the two walked past the many stalls.
“Oh yeah?” Evan asked, his breath rising in between them, painting the dark sky in broad strokes as a pink flush developed across his cheeks and nose. “You think so?”
Tommy tucked him into his side, his lips brushing against Evan's birthmark before landing on his cheek right beside his ear. “Oh I don't just think so,” he whispered, “I know so.”
Heat seared Evan’s body, burning a blazing trail from his head to his toes. He shuddered at the intensity and Tommy's arm tightening around him became the only barrier to the inevitable collapse that was heading his way. “How do you do that so easily?”
Tommy let out a soft chuckle. “Do what?”
Evan hit his arm gently, so gently in fact that Tommy barely felt it. “Affect me so easily, you dork!”
Tommy pulled him in tighter, as though Evan was a fish he was reeling in on a fishing rod. Both his hands encased Evan's waist, his chin resting on the top of the younger man's head as Evan himself let out a laugh. “So I'm a dork now huh?” He tickled Evan's sides causing him to squeal and Tommy broke into a smile, “that's not what you were calling me last night.” He turned so that he could place a kiss on Evan's lips.
Evan collapsed into him at the kiss as Tommy deepened it, oblivious to the looks from the crowds of people. “Mmhmm Tommy.” Evan muttered as he broke the kiss.
“Yes?”
“We're in public.”
Tommy placed a featherlight kiss on Evan's jaw, “Oh I know.”
“We're supposed to be shopping, come on we have to get Maddie and Chim's presents before we meet them.” Evan pushed him away gently, just enough so that the two could walk comfortably hand in hand. “Hey did you know that Christmas markets began in Germany in the late middle ages? This may be new here but they're a big thing in Europe.”
Tommy looked at Evan fondly, his eyes glimmering, “Is that right?”
“Yeah!” Evan grinned widely, his voice breathy in his excitement. “Some places world wide even have a Queer Christmas market. Imagine that! I mean a Queer safe space and a celebration of Christmas! How much better could it get?”
The twinkle in Evan's eyes was definitely competing with the many lights strewn through the garlands, over the huts housing the sellers stalls and on the tree visible from all angles of the market. Oh how Tommy wanted to kiss him again, the meeting time be damned. “I don't know, I just know you're adorable.”
Evan smiled again, his thumb drawing patterns on the back of Tommy's hand as they grabbed gifts for their loved ones. Tommy let himself sink into the soothing feeling it brought him, fighting the thoughts that told him to run, that he'd already screwed up with Evan before, that this was doomed to fail before it even began. “You know why I love Christmas so much?”
Evan's voice broke him away from his thoughts before he could spiral too much. “I’d guess it would have something to do with there being a lot of fire truck red in it's colour palette,” he teased, earning what could possibly be the world's cutest pout from Evan that he kissed briefly before turning serious, “I don't believe you've shared, no.”
“Well it's not the colour palette,” Evan confirmed, though that had already been rather obvious to Tommy. “It's because to me it represents connection.”
Tommy's brow furrowed, “And Thanksgiving doesn't?”
“Ah but Thanksgiving is an obligation, Christmas is a celebration.” Evan replied, “Sure you get together on both days with Christmas it's much more merry, you have the tree and everything and Thanksgiving demands you be thankful, with Christmas you can just vibe. When I was travelling on the road alone, it was always this beacon of hope that one day I would find somewhere I belonged, that its magic would bring me my people and from there more specifically my person.”
“That's a beautiful sentiment, Evan.”
“You are my person Tommy, I can't wait to celebrate you.” Evan's free hand reached up and stroked a line across his cheek bone. “Come on, let's go meet Maddie and Chim.”
Evan was sat curled up against Tommy as he waved down Maddie and Chimney from where they were walking in the door.
“Hey you two.”
“Hey sis.” Evan smiled softly.
Maddie slid into the booth opposite them and reached over to squeeze her brother's hand in greeting. “You two look cozy.”
“That's not the word I'd use.”
“Oh yeah Howie?” Tommy joined the conversation, giving Evan a brief squeeze for comfort. “What word would you use then?”
“Sickening.”
Evan frowned, Maddie on the other hand, whacked her husband's arm, “Chim!”
“What they're sickeningly sweet.”
“Oh come on!” Evan complained, “Like you were any better during your dates that you claimed were not dates.”
“I wasn't sick.”
“Neither am I.”
Tommy shook his head as Maddie subtly rolled her eyes at the two’s argument. “Typical Howie getting someone riled up.”
Maddie let out a little laugh, “Buck lets him get to him too easily, always has. It's just how he lives his life, always so open, you know?”
“That's what drew me to him in the first place.” Tommy admitted to her, “But I never thought we'd still be here now, it's scarier than stepping into a fire.”
“Well, yeah it would be, you have tools for the fire. There's no tools for what you're walking into now, though considering what Chim has described your movie taste as you're probably more prepared than most.” Maddie explained, “But you can't see that because you're a runner, you like to run from your problems. Hide away until they're fixed.”
“How did you know?”
“Runner recognizes runner.” Maddie smiles, “I had problems with my parents, I ran away into the arms of my abusive ex, I realized he was abusive, I ran to my brother, Jee slipped under the water during the blackout, I ran to the other side of the country. My brother isn't like that.”
“No he's accepting and adorable and funny as hell and looks at others as if they hung the moon.” Tommy replied, shaking his head. “I'm scared I'm not enough for him. That one day he's going to look at me and realize that he deserves better, that I'm not this cool guy he keeps saying I am, that I'm cracked and bumped and bruised. That he shouldn't be wasting his time.”
“You're really good for him, you look at him like he hung the moon.” Maddie replied, “Nobody else has given him the same courtesy. You care. Evan has such a big heart, I went radio silent on him for three years and he still sent me Christmas cards. A representation of his hope for reconnection I guess,” she met Tommy's eyes, “don't run. You know, I'm no doctor-”
“Evan said you were an ER nurse that's close enough.”
“See you listen to him, most people get annoyed by him without listening. What you think you're suffering from, what you're experiencing, there's no cure.”
Tommy laughed, “No?”
“No.”
“And what do you think it is?”
“It's Love Tommy.”
“I-”
“You love me?” Evan was looking at him with wide blue eyes. Holding on to never ending depths and sparkling like a diamond.
Don't run.
“Yeah. I do.”
Evan kissed him, “I love you too.”

Bucktommy Bones?
For the @tevanadvent2024 Day 3: Bones
This is 100% crack treated seriously
Tommy wakes to Evan furiously tapping away at his laptop keyboard.
Tommy squints at the alarm clock on this bedside table. “What happened to five more minutes?”
Evan barely spares him a glance. Tommy almost expects him to say, ‘not now kitten.’
“Are you on Substack again?”
“What? No. Reddit. Did you know—”
“Oh boy,” Tommy says. “Here we go.”
“There’s an entire—LAFD gossip network on here.”
“Uh huh,” Tommy mutters, wondering what’s got Evan so worked up. “And you found that how?”
Evan blinks. “Oh. Uh. That was like two hours ago, I can’t even remember. That’s besides the point.”
“What is the point?”
Evan frowns. “There’s stuff about us.”
Tommy raises an eyebrow. “What stuff?”
Evan’s shoulders droop. “That you’re just my”—he makes air quotes—”starter boyfriend.” He rolls his eyes. “Whatever that means. That you’re too old for me. That if I wanted to make out with a dude, it should be—” He shudders and turns back to the laptop, typing away. “I know that’s you, Rebecca Wilson from the 106.”
“Who?”
“The paramedic who hit on me at the badge and ladder the other night.”
“Well, you’re hot so—”
“That was after I told her I was taken and pointed you out across the bar. And then she started spewing some biphobic shit.”
Tommy grimaces. “I’m sorry, baby. Maybe it’s time you get some sleep.”
He huffs, “I can’t sleep, I’m too riled up.”
“Then we don’t have to sleep, but it’s time to put the laptop away.”
Evan smirks at him. “Ten more minutes?”
Tommy tries for a stern look, but he can feel how fond it must look. “Five minutes,” he counters. “And I’m topping.”
Evan laughs and then he’s lost again in the digital world. “Bucktommy bones?” Evan says with a huff. More furious tapping. “Bucktommy bones? You bet they fucking do.”

Day 12 of the BuckTommy Advent calendar! Tis the season folks!
Title: Fire
Rating: T
Warnings: None
Words: 1702
Fire
Buck hadn’t planned to be running on fumes by the time the latest call ended, but the shift had been relentless. The 118 had been bouncing from one incident to the next—a fender bender turned freeway pileup, a warehouse alarm malfunction, and a high-rise fire across town. By the time Bobby dismissed them, Buck was ready to collapse into bed.
Or, at least, he thought he was.
As he peeled off his gear, his phone buzzed persistently in his pocket. Hen’s voice floated over his shoulder as he fumbled to grab it.
“You’re not going to believe this,” Hen said, looking at her phone with wide eyes as Buck peeled off his gear.
“What?” Buck asked, freezing mid-motion, his heart already pounding.
Hen turned the screen toward him. “Athena just texted me. She said they’ve been trying to reach you—there’s a fire at your building. Looks like the 217 is on scene.”
