“I know a lot of kids who’ve endured Civil wars and famines These kids are wise Aware And they’re searching for a little beauty in the world Because life without beauty is unbearable”
– Jordan Tannahill, Concord Floral
~*~
Imagine for a moment, the process of a songwriter. One picks a key, uses the notes within the key, and tinkers with the piece until it sounds pleasing, familiar; until it sounds like anything.
All art is, to some extent then, structured and formulaic. So if that is the case, is there any ‘magic’ in art’s rigid form? In practice, art disrupts the very foundation of its being; creating something out of nothing. Hence, is there any true value—under the nihilistic impression that life bears no meaning—in pursuing art if it, at its core, has no purpose? Where could one derive significance from the way notes scatter on the staff, when it holds no initial meanin–
Logan Fray cursed as he slammed his pen into the counter. He gripped onto the surface of the paper he was writing on, crumpled it, and squeezed it out of the spiral binding of his notebook. Without looking up, he hurled it towards the garbage can to his left. He heard the soft sound of it hitting the metal rim and sighed, flicking his wrist without much thought.
A small spiral of shimmering navy dust shot out of his index finger and caught the balled-up paper before it could fall. He glanced over to his left, realization clicking in his head. Logan sighed and, annoyed, steadily moved his finger across his line of sigh. The crumpled piece of paper followed suit until it hovered over the garbage can.
Logan narrowed his eyes at his magic. The blue coated the creased edges of the balled-up paper, as if contemplating the survival of this draft and its feeble grasp on the edge of the tin-can cliff.
“Oh isn’t this quite the show!”
The loud, triumphant voice behind him jolted Logan forward. He lost concentration on his spell and the paper dropped helplessly into the bin.
Logan pushed his glasses up to pinch the bridge of his nose.
“Christ, Roman…”
“Sorry, sorry! Didn’t want to disturb the almighty Wizard Fray and the extraordinary use of his powers! Fray and Far Fables is in for a treat today, fellas!”
Logan rolled his eyes, spinning around in his chair and watching as the small, fairy-like form of Roman floated in front of shelves. Roman’s red magic formed some sort of feather duster.
“Anyway, don’t mind me! I don’t mean to be a heckler — just doing some spring cleaning!” He exaggerated a flick of the magical duster against a book.
“You don’t have to dust the spines of books, Roman,” Logan drawled. “It is illogical. With your magical wards, nothing here collects dust. And even if it did, your size and your...general aura deems you an ineffective housekeeper.”
Roman gasped, twirling around in the air to float over to Logan’s face. He hovered in front of his nose with his hands on his hips.
“I will pretend you did not just hurt my feelings just then!” Roman smiled smugly as he dusted Logan’s nose. Powder puffs of his red magic fogged Logan’s vision. “I will instead pretend you said ‘thank you, Roman, oh dashing bookkeeper!’”
“A happier reality, I’m sure,” Logan huffed, rubbing his nose and holding back a sneeze. Roman floated back to the shelves.
“Besides, someone has to tend to the nooks,” Roman hummed pointedly, landing on the edge of the shelves and leaning against one of the book spines. “Each one is a ghost town at this point.”
“They were always ghost towns,” Logan gritted out, annoyance growing. “There’s nothing in there.”
“Yeah yeah.” Roman stuck out his tongue. “ ‘Art has no meaning in a meaningless life’ or whatever, which means there’s nothing in art and there’s nothing in books, yada yada yada – you keep telling yourself that, Specs.”
“I am not the only one saying that. If you read Virgil Aries’ work on nihilism and its implications on art as a sort of void—”
“Yawn, Logan,” Roman groaned, “uber yawn. I’m not going to read some sad philosopher’s existential crisis.”
“Virgil Aries was not sad, he was brilliant–”
“I’m sure he was.”
Logan sighed, standing up and sweeping the books off the counter and into his arms. He walked around the counter and across the store, placing the books back on the other shelves. Roman flew closely behind him.
“It is nice to see you using your magic again, even in pitiful displays." Roman nonchalantly tilted his head up. "Almost thought you forgot how to.”
“It was just an impulse, Roman,” Logan muttered, letting Roman dust the floor of the shelves before sliding the books into their proper place. “I was deep in thought and wasn't thinking I will not make a habit out of it.”
“Ugh, when will you understand that I want you to make a habit out of it– I want to have cool magic duels with you!”
“More the reason why we don’t need these ‘pitiful’ displays of magic. First of all, I’m not even supposed to be using my magic while we’re open. What if someone walked in? What would you say to them then, hm?”
“ ‘Hey, do you want to see the coolest thing in your flimsy, mortal life?’ ”
Logan rolled his eyes. “ ‘Cool’ is not how I would describe it.”
“Ouch!” Roman turned his red feather duster into a small, sparkly sword. He dramatically stabbed it into his chest, bits of his red magic exploding in a small puff around him. The sword dissipated upon contact. “What is up with your...your spiciness today?”
Logan slid the last book into the shelf and leaned against it.
“I’m just stuck on this speech again .”
Roman deflated. “Oh, here we go…”
“I just don’t understand what my problem is. I have all my research in place, I know what I want to say about art, I know what I want to do, but nothing I write has any substance! None of it makes sense. I can’t answer the fundamental question of my own damn argument.”
“Which is…?”
“ Why, ” Logan hissed, running both hands through his hair. “Why do people pursue such meaningless tactics of escapism if– if they’re escaping from nothing. That, in turn, makes art nothing. Right?”
“I don't know, Lo. Maybe that actually means it’s not entirely meaningless then,” Roman hummed idly.
Logan glowered at Roman, whose face was plastered with a shit-eating grin.
“I just need to get this speech done,” Logan stiltedly said, evening his breath. “If I get any of it done by the end of the month, I can be reassured that I won’t make a complete fool of myself at the university conference.”
“It’s a convention of sad, young nihilists with student debt. Everyone there is a fool.”
Before Logan could respond, the bells above the front door echoed across the shop. Roman and Logan exchanged frantic looks. Shit. Logan didn’t even realize what time it was.
“Book nook. Now,” he hissed. Luckily, Roman already beat him to it. Roman pressed his hand onto the spine of a nearby book on the shelf. His red magic spread across the surface until his hand could go through the spine. Then, with a small yelp, Roman tumbled into the book and disappeared from Logan’s view.
“Logan! Hi!” a peppy voice rang out at the same time. Logan spun around on his heel to face the front door and forced a smile.
“Salutations, Patton,” Logan replied, awkwardly leaning against the shelves. He snuck cautious glances to the book Roman had hid himself in, making sure he was completely out of sight.
“I’m here for a book!” Patton chirped, tipping his hat at Logan. He looked up at the shelves around Logan with a smile. “And I have a feeling you have just the one for me!”
“You come here every week, Patton. You do not have to repeat the same thing, I know what you are here for.” Logan, despite everything that was occurring, found himself smiling warmly at Patton. “Please roam around as you see fit.”
“I shall!” Patton said, moving past Logan and starting on the opposite end of the shelves Logan was leaning against. Logan’s eyes widened.
“Um, did you end up finishing the book you bought last week? The one by Elizabeth Gilbert?” Logan blurted out as he moved closer to Patton, his back covering the book he knew Roman was hiding in. Patton looked up at him and smiled.
“Oh! Yes, The Signature of All Things, right? I really enjoyed it! I can’t believe you made me enjoy historical fiction — I’d usually fall asleep a few pages in, but Alma’s life is just so interesting!”
Logan nodded tensely as Patton moved closer to him. He pressed his back against the shelves as if that could further hide Roman. “Truly.”
“And I actually brought you a painting!”
“Oh?”
“Yeah!” Patton fished through his messenger bag, his hat nearly slipping as his head tilted down to find it. Logan could hear a small thump! muffled behind his back. Logan winced. He hadn’t even considered the conditions of the book nook. While he knew none of them could ever hurt anyone—especially Roman—he definitely knew some were not ideal.
He tried to quietly grab the book Roman had escaped in, slowly turning around to take it off the shelves while Patton wasn’t looking.
“Here it is!” Patton exclaimed loudly, animatedly pulling out a rolled piece of paper. Logan jumped at the abrupt action, ducking to the side to avoid getting hit by Patton’s arm. “The book took me longer to read– I didn’t even think I’d finish it within a week– so sorry that the painting is a bit crude!”
“That is quite alright, Patton,” Logan said, adjusting his tie. “It is a gift that you do not have to keep giving yet...you do. So I appreciate the painting regardless.”
“Of course! Take a look and tell me how you like it!”
Logan took the paper out of Patton’s hand and unrolled it.
Sprawled across sketchbook paper was splashes of watercolour making up an array of botanical illustrations. The flowers and plants overlapped each other on the old-yellowed background in a way that didn’t seem too suffocated; each plant had space to breathe. Thin, cursive descriptions sprawled across their stems. It almost felt like a map of some sorts, navigating through each individual aspect of a garden.
“It’s a bit reminiscent of my collagist days,” Patton said with a small giggle. “But I like it! I actually drew a lot of inspiration from the cool sketches of all the plants scattered throughout the book.
“Evidently,” Logan hummed, smiling at the painting. He looked up at Patton. “It is very nice, Patton. You capture the book’s essence very well here.”
“Oh, well I know how you feel about the art stuff– but thank you for humouring me, Lo!” Patton giggled. Logan’s smile faltered, but he fought to keep it upright.
Logan kept observing the painting, idly walking away from the shelf, as if mesmerized by Patton’s work.
“Ooh, this book looks interesting!”
Patton’s voice suddenly snapped Logan out of his daze. Roman.
Logan turned around to see Patton standing in front of the book Roman was in. Instinctually, he shot a small burst of magic at the display table behind Patton, sending books tumbling to the floor with a loud thud!
“Oh!” Patton whirled around at the noise. He gave Logan a sheepish grin. “I must’ve bumped into the table or something! Sorry ‘bout that!”
“No worries,” Logan said with a tight smile. Patton crouched down to start picking up the books as Logan tucked the painting under his arm, quickly moving to the book Roman was hiding in. He pulled the book out slightly.
“Roman,” he hissed as quietly as he could. “Get out of there.”
Almost immediately, Roman hopped out of the book, all his clothes dripping wet.
“An unfortunate choice,” Roman muttered, shivering. Logan shook his head.
“You can clean yourself upstairs, just go now– ”
“There you go!” Patton announced, standing back up in a swift motion that knocked his hat off his head.
Logan watched as Roman, clearly panicked, jumped into the back cover of the book and flattened himself onto its surface. Logan, startled, pulled the book off the shelf and pressed it to his chest, attempting to cover the new picture of Roman on the back cover.
“Everything’s in its place!” Patton continued, brushing off his hands. His stare flitted over to the book in Logan’s arms. “Oh! That’s the book I was looking at! Do you mind– ?”
“N-No!” Logan blurted out. Patton frowned at him, and Logan squeezed his eyes shut, clearing his throat.
“I...I mean, no problem. That would be...no problem at all.”
“Cool!”
Patton took the book from Logan, who kept his eyes glued to the frantic 2D-Roman next to the book synopsis.
“Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë,” Patton read aloud. “Huh! Sounds interesting.”
“Y-Yes!” Logan slowly reached to grab the book back. “How about I get a bag for y–”
“Let’s see what this is about!”
Logan paled as Patton turned the book around, almost in bullet-time. Logan caught a glimpse of Roman’s eyes widening and, horrified, watched as Roman slid his flattened form into the spine of the book, becoming squished within its confines.
“ ‘The wild, passionate story of intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff’,” Patton continued to read. “ ‘Brontë captures the evocative, conflicted interplay of nature and culture in her’– wow, ‘masterpiece of English literature’!”
Patton playfully tossed the book in the air, catching it by its spine. “Sounds like I found a winner!”
Logan yelped, snatching the book back from Patton, who tilted his head to the side. Logan broke into a sheepish smile.
“Er, let me check you out!”
Patton winked. “If you insist!”
Logan flushed red, hurrying to the cash register. He crouched down behind the counter, lowering the book out of sight and disguising his attempts of freeing Roman as him grabbing a bag for Patton.
Logan knocked firmly on the spine, sending Roman disappearing through it and into the book. He then opened the book and Roman emerged with a gasp, as if he was swimming in the pages.
“Good Fantasy- Gucci–”
“Shh!”
“What was that?” Patton asked from above. Logan’s eyes widened as he stuffed Roman in his pocket, despite muffled protests.
Logan shot back up with a small paper bag and a forced grin.
“Shhhh-ure is a great day to buy a book!” An unnatural laugh escaped his lips. “That...that is what I said, heh.”
“Ah, it is!” Patton slid a few bills across the counter and brought the bag to his chest in exchange. “I’m excited for the new book! Sounds good for a rainy day.”
Logan tensely nodded, feeling his pocket slowly dampen. “Mhm.”
Patton’s stare floated over to Logan’s open notebook, his smile faltering.
“Still stuck on your speech, it seems?”
Logan blinked, following Patton’s gaze and sighing. “It appears so, hm?”
Patton nodded slowly.
“I know you explained it to me once, but I still don’t really understand your plan for the speech. Wasn’t the prompt supposed to be ‘finding the meaning of art’?” Patton’s stare flitted towards the shelves behind the counter with all of Logan’s various philosophy and aesthetic texts. “Yet you’re tackling what seems to be the opposite and...and I admittedly don’t get it. Just ‘cause it’s for a bunch of art students doesn’t mean it has to be all deep and dreary, heh.”
Logan shrugged helplessly.
“I just need something new to say,” he mumbled. “You can’t understand art’s meaning without understanding the implied lack thereof.”
“So you’re stuck in the lack thereof?”
Logan looked up at Patton and frowned at his slightly-amused smile.
“It’s a lot more complex than that.”
“Uh-huh.” Patton’s smile felt filled with pity, or perhaps sympathy. “Maybe the solution– just a suggestion– is to go outside? Touch the grass? Find meaning in the world rather than bury your nose in a book?”
“Ironic,” Logan scoffed, though regretted it instantly. Patton, however, just laughed.
“Touché.” Patton shrugged. As he was about to leave, he turned his head over his shoulder. “And hey, I’m sorry that I keep pestering you about the speech, heh. It’s just…”
Patton lowered his gaze, shifting on his heels. In an uncharacteristically hushed tone, he said, “I care about you, Lo. More than you think. I would hate to see you unravel yourself in trying to find the answers and...well, I fear that you already have.”
“That’s impossible,” Logan mumbled, though averted his gaze from Patton. “If I were to unravel, it would be because the answers ended up in me, in which case I would need to access them." Logan tugged his collar awkwardly. "But...but they are not.”
Patton rose an eyebrow. "Maybe we both need to get out there then.”
“ ‘There’? As in...the world?”
Patton grinned, holding his new book close to his chest. “And all the other ones too.”
The door closed swiftly, bells chiming in Logan’s ears. Logan heaved a deep sigh of relief as Roman floated out of his pocket, arms-crossed, unamused.
“We have to be more careful,” Logan muttered. “Who knows what would happen if he figured out about you, about the book nooks, about me… ”
“Come on, Lo. It’s Patton , we’re talking about.”
“Still.” Logan grimaced at the thought. “He could see everything in the wrong way and I would prefer to keep some things normal around here.”
Roman just nodded, shaking off like a dog. Small drops of water splashed against Logan’s cheek.
“Soooo….that Patton sure is a character, hm?” Roman eventually asked, looking at Logan coyly. Logan felt his cheeks heat up.
“That is what you want to focus on?”
“I just think he has a lot to teach you. And it seems as though your heart is telling you the same.” Roman winked. “Maybe it’s time for you to listen.”
Before Logan could rebuttal, Roman flew up the stairs to clean himself off. Logan shook his head, walking over to the door to close up early. On his way, he nearly slid on something on the floor. He frowned, picking the item in question up.
Patton’s hat. He must’ve forgotten about it.
Logan stared at the hat for a few seconds. He held it up and then, without really thinking, held it to his chest. He closed his eyes for a brief moment and then opened them to see a blurry view of the world outside his shop doors.
‘What does it all mean?’
Logan sighed, shaking his head as he flipped the door sign to ‘closed’. He stalked back to the counter, sitting back in his chair and tossing the hat to the side. With a flick of his wrist, a small stream of magic shot out of his index finger and landed on a book behind him, lifting it off the shelves.
He continued to levitate books without turning back, and Logan began to write once more.

Meta season 4 - part 1
This season ranks second on my list (number one just has to be season 2), partly because of Rory’s in between-ness, which highlights the reasonable flaws in the character, and Lorelai’s bold innkeeper journey, and basically every other character having really interesting and plausible arcs.
Ballrooms and Biscotti - Such a great episode, I’m laughing constantly AND finding out that Stars Hollow does celebrate Groundhog Day! (obviously)
The Lorelais’ first day at Yale - Copper boom. Need that on a t-shirt. Such an iconic episode. I remember watching it when it first broadcasted thinking, this is me and mý mother, me and my family. It could have, should have, been a defining moment for Rory; it’s going to be very difficult being Christine Amanpour broadcasting from Tehran with her mommy. You only get one life, and there are so many interesting paths for you to choose, just, you can’t possibly do them all, and sometimes, loving and needing your family is a gift, not something to overcome, but something to build your life around. To invest in the fact that you are a better, richer, person with them around. That’s what I realized at that same point in my life, anyhow. And poor Luke. His pain is so entertaining though.
The Hobbit, the sofa and Digger Stiles - An interesting episode.
Rory Gilmore subscribes to the Stars Hollow Gazette! Having her become Chief Editor in AYITL might have been one of the brightest decisions for the revival, at least if they had bothered exploring it for a bit. (They could’ve cut the inexplicable With a Little Help From My Friends-scene - copied right out of Across the Universe, if anyone has missed that - and given me more Rory Gilmore gets The Gazette up and running instead.)
And Emily and Paris being two peas in a pot! “Don’t you want people to owe you?” Until Paris decides she hates the party persona she’s trying on anyway.
Rory has to defend her staying in her room with a book; she’s not hiding, she’s actually enjoying it. I’m torn on this. Lorelai is great for reminding our girl to stay in the moment, but I also think that Rory has a point, and that she should be allowed to take on the world in her own pace and her own way, me and my mother have a similar dynamic. But sometimes I think Lorelai is a bit stuck on Rory experiencing all these big absurd things (biker parties, barn burnings) while she is real uptight about her experiencing more plausible things for her age; love, sex, more realistic and ultimately necessary adventures. And then it struck me that Lorelai herself didn’t really get to have those adventures, since she got pregnant so early.
Tana is adorable.
Jason is really interesting and actually my second favorite love interest for Lorelai, but more on that later. He’s like a combination of Logan and Christopher with some actual guts, not that it works out for him but it doesn’t for the other boys playing it passive either. And Emily recognizes the danger entering into business with him.
Rory puts off telling Emily what she really thinks about her buying stuff for the dorm room, adopting Lorelai’s way of dealing with her.
Chicken or beef - Rory has cut her hair. Like everything monumental on this show it doesn’t happen on screen.
Dean is getting married, which I do not need to mock, right? Repetitive and redundant.
I love the Zack and Brian dynamic. Also, them referring to Dave going off to California - Hilarious! And Rory schooling them on schooled rock ’n rollers - priceless!
Gosh darnit I have a weak spot for Dean, or more specifically: I’m really into the character arc. It’s so elegant and sh*tty. How he starts out a pretty decent guy and could’ve gotten to think that about himself that way his whole life if he just hadn’t fallen for our girl. He’s the perfect example of how love can wreck a person, and not even in an epic- but totally mundane and kind of icky way. I dig that (his happy ending in the revival was sort of a cop out). Jess actually has the opposite arc, which of course I dig even more.
Oh goodness! It’s Dean with crappy friends. Now, see, that’s plausible, him having stupid friends, quantity over quality, kind of like Logan (yes, I have issues with Finn and whatever the other guy’s name is, can’t believe they made it to the revival! With a little help from someone else’s friends... *smh*). One of the things that gets to me the most from Swan Song is how Jess can get away with his lie about the football with a buddy. He does not have friends outside of fictional characters and it always makes me sad that Rory buys into his bogus explanation when her obvious reaction should be: “What buddy?”
Oh, and that’s Leo, and Schmidt!
And Luke is the best. I’m getting teary thinking about how he’s a real mensch to just everyone and so rarely get credit for it. Love Luke.
“Why didn’t she love me?” I feel so bad for him, but then he marries Lindsey without dealing with anything.
And Rory just takes Luke’s word and doesn’t go to the wedding. A level of trust, or maybe she was looking for an excuse.

AO3 Version right here
“I know you want to,”said Dee, tilting his head towards the older sibling.
“What I want is of no one’s concern. Now please, let my brother and I leave. Our matters are much less trivial than imaginary playtime,” Logan spat. He had had enough of this.
“Lo, you seem a bit wound up. Wouldn’t chilling out a bit be beneficial? Remember what Patton said?” As if to resemble their happy, pappy, brother figure, Virgil straightened his sweater and stared Logan down with a large dopey smile: “All work and no play makes Logan a sad boy!” Logan had never seen anything so ridiculous come from Virgil.
“I have never seen anything so ridiculous come from your mouth, Virgil. I request you to refrain from imitating your friend in hopes of keeping the universe balanced,” Logan said.
A brilliant idea formed in Virgil’s mind. “I will...if you let us hang out with Dee”
Logan sighed and stared pointedly at the sky, hoping for some sort of escape from the two young boys in front of him. He really didn’t have a choice did he?
“....Fine. But if you happen to get hypothermia, you will be making your own soup.”
Virgil pumped his hand into the air before running to Dee’s backyard. “Thanks Lo!”
In all honesty, Logan had never seen him this ecstatic. Even on his good days, Virgil preferred an introvert’s lifestyle, huddled up in his room, watching videos until the crack of dawn, and diverting attention from him any chance he could get. However, it seemed that the mystery that was Dee and his mind(and backyard) entranced him more than his bed.
Logan shivered and burrowed further into his jacket beforing trudging through mounds of snow(the snow plows barely ever came through their area) to get to Dee’s backyard. Off in the corner of the wide space, he could see Virgil following Dee up a makeshift ladder, into a surprisingly well made treehouse. Even so, his brotherly instincts kicked when he heard the odd creaks and groans the treehouse gave when the two stepped in.
“Please be careful while you are up there!” Logan did not need another scolding on the same day.
“Oh don’t worry, Logan. Your brother is in safe hands,” shouted Dee. Logan was not convinced of course. If it hadn’t been for his lack of height, Logan would have been thoroughly intimidated by the young boy’s strange nature.
“Yeah, Logan! Don’t worry about a thing!”
“That is incredibly rich coming from you.”
“Oh, shut up,”shouted Virgil, sticking his tongue out at his brother. Of course, he was fully aware that he would be fine. He knew that whatever situation he could get into, Logan would always be there to catch him if he “fell”.
“Aren’t you gonna come up?”
“No thank you. I would much rather stand down here instead of accidentally fainting and plummeting to my death,” Logan deadpanned.
Virgil rolled his eyes before Dee spoke up. “That made so much sense, Logan,” he shouted, “I definitely appreciate your honesty but-”
“But don’t we have more important matters to discuss? Like what are we doing up here in a treehouse?” interjected Virgil. The frigid weather sent a cold breeze through the treehouse, reminding them both of where they were.
“Oh yes, of course. Virgil, what do you think about dragons?” asked Dee.
Logan was thoroughly confused. What did dragons have to do with 30° weather have to do with fire breathing, winged creatures?
“Uhh, they’re ok? I don’t know, I haven’t given them much thought,” said Virgil.
“Well, not to alarm you or anything but,” Dee lowered his voice and whispered, “but I think there might be one behind you.”
Virgil once again rolled his eyes but still complied to Dee’s little trick. “Oh really? I guess I’ll just have to turn around and see,” he said before turning around. Nothing but the wall of the treehouse faced him. Before he could tell Dee off for his antics, something was shoved in his face.
“There it is, Virgil! You must defeat it before it wreaks havoc on our home!” Dee cried.
For at least the third time that day, Virgil rolled his eyes, realizing that accepting Dee’s invite may not have been the best idea. “Oh no,” said Virgil in his usual monotone voice, “whatever will I do. Logan, could you please help me and Prince Dumbass over here defeat the evil plushie before it destroys our beautiful home?”
“Virgil...I would rather let an actual dragon assault me before helping either of you,” Logan replied with the same dry snark.
“Well aren’t you too just full of happiness and sunshine,” said Dee, clearly annoyed at the two brothers. Not to worry though, he could save the day yet!(he was clearly spending way too much time with Roman)
Dee grabbed Virgil’s shoulder and turned him around, telling him quietly, “Ok so, I have a stash of snowballs over there in the corner. How about we help Logan loosen up a little,” Dee said, smirking evilly.
Virgil was...not opposed to the suggestion. He had noticed how tense Logan had gotten over the past few weeks. What with taking care of himself, Virgil, and their entire house, Logan had had little to no rest. Maybe a snowball fight could help him let off some steam.
Virgil gave the same smirk. “Let’s do it.”
While each of them grabbed a handful of snowballs, Logan had noticed that it had gotten unnaturally quiet in the treehouse. Maybe they had decided to settle down for a few moments. If so, then he might as join them. He had begun to climb up the ladder but had stopped abruptly when he heard Virgil’s voice.
“Attack!”
And there he was, being pelted by almost a dozen snowballs before landing on his butt. He heard laughter coming from within the treehouse. And as much as he cherished the moments when Virgil would laugh, he was not amused at the reason for Virgil’s amusement. They were not getting away with that. He slowly got up and grabbed a handful of snow, shaping it into a compact ball, aiming at the window of the treehouse (hopefully physics could save him now) and shot.
Judging from the shrieks and laughter coming from within the structure, he could tell that he had hit one of them. “One point for me!” Logan had shouted before forming more snowballs, fully aware that they most likely had more snowballs formed in Dee’s treehouse.
“How do you aim so well?” Virgil asked, wiping snow out of his hair.
“Physics, dear brother of mine,” Logan shouted before throwing another snowball up.
“I didn’t realize he would attack back, Virgil. I’m impressed,” said Dee before throwing a snowball straight at Logan’s face.
“Yeah well, he has a lot of hidden talents. But, uhhh, you better watch out!” Virgil warned. Dee saw Logan getting ready to throw another ball before shouting and ducking under the window. He missed.
And so, the battle continued. Virgil and Dee continued to pelt snowballs down on Logan who replied with the same amount of enthusiasm. Logan hadn’t enjoyed an afternoon By the end, they were all covered in snow, hands practically numb, and noses running faster than any marathon runner. But all battles eventually end. They called a truce, knowing that if they continued, at least one of them would most likely catch an extremely terrible cold(something that none of them had the time for).
Logan was nearly breathless because of the fight. He weakly shouted up at the younger boys, “I believe it is time for you two to come down now. I am completely numb and in need of some warmth.”
“Fine, just let us catch our breath first,” yelled out Virgil who had laid down on the cold floor of the treehouse next to Dee. It took five more minutes of Logan’s nagging and the cold weather for them to finally manage to climb down the ladder.
Even if Logan appeared to be annoyed at their lateness, Virgil could tell that Logan was feeling much better. His expression was much more laidback relative the morning and he was occasionally bouncing on his toes(even if it was slightly). He knew Logan would enjoy the fight.
Logan gave Dee a slight smile, “I know I was hesitant at first but...thank you for inviting us.”
Dee gave him a shocked glance, Oh yeah, uhh, no problem. You two honestly just looked like such losers standing there in the snow by yourse-”
“Nevermind, I completely take it back.”
“I’m kidding, I’m kidding,” Dee chuckled, “But yeah, no problem. Come back but don’t forget Virgil. I like him better.”
Virgil snorted before smacking Dee’s head lightly. “Yeah sure, see you again Dee. Maybe you could come by our place sometime.” Virgil stared at Logan for his approval, who rolled his eyes and slightly nodded. Virgil quickly whispered a ‘yes’ before walking down the street and giving off a salute to Dee.
Logan nodded at Dee’s direction. Dee gave his own nod. “Come back soon.”
“We will definitely try.” Logan walked off in Virgil’s direction.
Maybe letting go every once in a while wasn’t so bad.

Logan Review (2017)
I remember when I first watched X-Men back in the year 2000. One of the most memorable scenes for me was Wolverine’s introduction. That moment of seeing those powerful claws put to use for the first time was a sight to behold. Flash forward seventeen years later, and Hugh Jackman has owned the role of Wolverine. Our beloved superheroes have had changes over the years. Superman, Batman, Spiderman, etc. have all been graced by different actors. Even our own mutants, the leaders of the packs themselves Professor X and Magneto have had different actors. (Although, I love James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender in those roles and I hope they continue them). The point is, there has only been ONE Wolverine on the movie screen, and that is Jackman’s Wolverine. There have been seven X-Men universe movies with Wolverine/Jackman credited in them, and nine if you want to count the surprise cameos in ‘First Class’ and ‘Apocalypse’. I enjoyed all the X-Men movies I have seen. ‘Days of Future Past’ was my favorite, ‘The Last Stand’ was my least but still enjoyable. However, ‘Logan’ separates itself from the others. It separates itself from other comic book inspired movies in the Marvel and DC Universe. It is unconventional, intense, gritty, heartfelt, dark, and violent. It is also very funny, with Jackman providing his famous grumpy and pissed off persona that made us all love this character. Another hats off props I want to give is to Patrick Stewart. Seeing him and Jackman on screen together as a kind of father/son relationship is always a joy. And in this movie, it really shines. If this is their last (they both have confirmed retirement from the roles, but one can still hope) time playing these two characters, they really gave it their all with this movie. ‘Logan’ was directed by James Mangold (The Wolverine 2013), also known for (’3:10 to Yuma’, ‘Walk the Line’) This movie takes place in the year 2029. Mutants are just about extinct. Logan works as a limousine driver, living in an isolated desert area near the Mexican border with Caliban and Professor X. (For all those non-comic book nerds wondering who Caliban is and what he is doing in this movie, this article could help https://moviepilot.com/p/who-is-caliban-logan-x-men/421864). Professor X isn’t well, he’s suffering from seizures and memory loss. He is cared for by Logan along with Caliban, and required to take medication at certain hours. It seems that this is the way their lives will all play out. That is, until Logan meets a mysterious woman with a plea for help. As the story unfolds, Wolverine and Professor X are on a journey to protect a gifted young girl Laura (played terrifically by newcomer Dafne Keen) and get her to safety. Logan and Professor X seemed to have just about had it with the missions, but I’m glad they had one more left in them. One thing that should be pointed out is this movie has an R-rating. If you wanted to see what Logan’s (and Laura’s) claws can really do, you won’t be disappointed. Also, the swearing makes things more believable as well mostly for Logan’s part. I grew up playing the X-Men fighting game on Sega Saturn back in the 90′s. What I liked about using Wolverine’s character was that he was straightforward- slash the heck out of your opponent. And it was awesome to see that play out on the big screen, with Wolverine and Laura going complete beastmode on the villains. The fight scenes we’re incredible and brutal (prepare to see lots of blood and flying limbs). This movie is an emotional roller coaster ride that will have you laughing in one scene and then feeling admiration and sadness in the next. The chemistry between Professor X, Laura, and Logan we’re so good. You can just tell they spent a lot of time together while filming this even while off camera. If I was to point out any flaws for this movie, it would be...honestly I really can’t. It would usually be the main antagonist, however I enjoyed Pierce’s character (played cunningly by Boyd Holbrook, hope to see more from him). Another would be if a character did something completely stupid and out of character, but I didn’t notice that either. I guess the only negative would be the confusion about Caliban for the casual X-Men fans, but that is a very small nitpick. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie, it was really good. Hopefully it opens the door for more unconventional approach to comic book based movies. Hugh Jackman gave an incredible performance, and if this is his last time playing Wolverine-standing ovation for all the work over the years. The next actor (if there is one) has some very big shoes to fill. And if you’re still feeling sad and wiping away your tears, there is always a glimmer of hope and X-Men will live on.
5 out of 5 stars.
Side Notes
My favorite comic film of all time is “The Dark Knight” but this one comes pretty close. I just like Batman and The Joker more than Wolverine, but I became a bigger Wolverine and X-Men fan that is for sure.
I really want to see more of Baby Wolverine aka Laura, such a bad-ass character. If they can somehow incorporate the new kids with the First Class X-Men Generation, *faints. If they can add Deadpool to the mix- double faints.
I’m still dreaming about a Quicksliver and Deadpool movie- *heart attack. http://movieweb.com/deadpool-quicksilver-x-men-crossover-movie-evan-peters/
Still planning on John Wick reviews, might start the first one today. Possible movies coming up- “Lion”, “Kong-Skull Island”, “Before I Fall”

off the rack #1237
Monday, November 19, 2018
Stan "The Man" Lee passed away last week at the age of 95. I am grateful for the stories he wrote when I first started reading comic books as a pre-teen. My favourite super hero is Spider-Man and his alter ego Peter Parker. Being the number one son of a Chinese family that whole responsibility motto resonated very deeply with me. I have read thousands of comic books in 50 years and the one issue that hit me the hardest was Amazing Spider-Man #33. This was where Spider-Man was trapped under tons of collapsed rubble and Aunt May was on her death bed. Peter had to free himself in order to save her. His resolve and herculean effort won out and I'll never forget the feeling I had when I got to that panel where Spider-Man lifts tons of wreckage off of himself. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko told an amazing story and made me a fan for life. Comic book fandom and the comic book creative community mourn his passing and I acknowledge their sadness. Me, I'll remember what a fun and upbeat man Stan was and I hope I can be as fun and upbeat as I get older.
Love is Love - Done by a plethora of writers and artists. My Jee-Riz partner Chris gifted me this anthology because I was too cheap to pay the $9.99 US when it hit the racks. This book was produced after the 2016 murders of 49 people in The Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida by a lone gunman. As much as I want to believe that Love conquers all, the reality is that fear and hate so easily overshadows compassion and love. A lot of these stories made me think about man's inhumanity and I hope that others reading this book try to make changes to make a better world.
Auntie Agatha's home for Wayward Rabbits #1 - Keith Giffen (writer) Benjamin Roman (art) Bryan Valenza and Beyond Colorlab (colours). Here's one that Chris recommended and we had leftover copies on the rack so that I could give it a look see. I'm sure glad I did. I haven't read anything new by Keith "close-up" Giffen in quite a long time but remember his hilarious take on Ambush Bug. This story about Julie and her aunt is also very funny. I love the anthropomorphic animals. I wish I didn't need a magnifying glass to read some of the word balloons but other than that, I had a hoot. This gets added to my "must read" list.
Firefly #1 - Greg Pak (writer) Dan McDaid (art) Marcelo Costa (colours) Jim Campbell (letters). I was late in my appreciation of Joss Whedon's TV show but was able to watch the whole series after it came out on DVD thanks to fanatical friends who bought it and lent them to me. If you liked the TV show and the Serenity movie you will like this new comic book. Even if you weren't a fan of the show, you'll enjoy this space western because Greg did a great job of introducing these characters. It's a good non-spandex adventure book.
Catwoman #5 - Joelle Jones (writer & art) Laura Allred (colours) Josh Reed (letters). Copycats part 5. Selina finds herself caught by the crazy Mrs. Creel. The big showdown is next issue and I can't wait.
Domino #8 - Gail Simone (writer) David Baldeon (art) Jesus Aburtov (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). The gals team up with Morbius to save the world from a deadly vampire virus. Jesus's art is awesome sauce.
Thor #7/LGY #713 - Jason Aaron (writer) Tony Moore (art) John Rauch (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). "Young Thor's Lament" is a great one issue story about the difference between gods and mere mortals. I love these old tales. They're a nice break from world shattering stories where everything is at stake.
The Unstoppable Wasp #2/LGY #10 - Jeremy Whitley (writer) Gurihiru (art) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). They never told us what was in the bag. I want to know what's in the bag. If they don't tell us what was in the bag in next issue's G.I.R.L. versus A.I.M. story, I'm checking out of this wasp's nest.
Uncanny X-Men #1/LGY #620 - Ed Brisson, Matthew Rosenberg & Kelly Thompson (writers) Mahmud Asrar (art) Rachelle Rosenberg (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Disassembled part 1. This title used to be my favourite Marvel comic for a long time back when Chris Claremont (writer), John Byrne (pencils) and Terry Austin (inks) were on the book. Then I got tired of reading about how the whole world feared and hated mutants and wants to wipe them out. Here we go again with the X-Men fighting to stop a vaccine from being released that can stop the mutant gene from activating. That's just flogging a dead horse to me. The final nail for me in this $7.99 US first issue was the 4-part back-up stories meant to keep me reading. If they had revealed who was behind all the madness and confusion in the main story, I might have decided to read the next issue but these vignettes only made the main story clear as mud. They felt like fillers used to pack a high priced comic book. This is another massive Marvel mutant event that I'm going to not care about.
Avengers #10/LGY #700 - Jason Aaron (writer) David Marquez & Ed McGuinness (main story art) Frazer Irving, Adam Kubert & Andrea Sorrentino (back-up stories art) Justin Ponsor, Erick Arciniega, Frazer Irving, Matthew Wilson & Giada Marchisio (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). First there's the big fight between war monger Namor and his Defenders of the Deep versus the Avengers. Then the new Russian Winter Guard butt into the fray. Much punching and bravado is involved. We wind up this $5.99 US issue with the introduction of the Squadron Supreme of America (because Justice League is already taken) who fill the void left by the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. for the US government. I had a "what the?" moment while reading the back-up stories when Wolverine showed up to rescue Loki from the Celestials. Wolverine's appearance eventually made sense only because I also read Thor and Logan was in that book recently. Jason Aaron is keeping this super hero team entertaining for me so I'll keep reading.
Fantastic Four #3/LGY #648 - Dan Slott (writer) Sara Pichelli & Nico Leon (art) Marte Gracia (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I must have missed reading #2 because I was surprised to see the team reunited and a whole bunch of other super heroes gathered to fight the Griever. No worries though. The villain is defeated and the universe is saved. Now the FF can return and we can move on to Ben and Alicia's wedding. Other recent weddings didn't go off as planned and I expect this one won't either.

WisCon 42 panel Comics Onscreen
Comic Books On Screen panel description:
Marvel and DC are currently battling it out on both the big and small screens for dominance with multiple movies coming out yearly, as well as new shows on various networks and streaming sites. There are also multiple shows on SyFy based on comics, as well as The Walking Dead and Comic Book Men series on AMC; Riverdale, which is based loosely on the Archie comics characters; and Amazon Prime has picked up a revival of The Tick. Let's dig in and discuss these tv and movie adaptations. Are we getting enough representation? Which shows and films are doing better, and which worse?
Moderator Alex Jennings with panelists Terri Ash, Erin Kelly, Jessica Plummer, and Cath Schaff-Stump.
Reminder that these panel notes are only my own recollections and the things I managed to write down - my notes are incomplete and likely faulty in places. Corrections and additions are always welcome. Especially please do correct me if I get names or pronouns wrong!
Also I name panelists as that’s publicly available information but not audience members unless requested by that person to have their named added.
[This panel was on Monday morning and I was so tired. So tired. This panel was a lot of fun and I mostly just listened and laughed a lot, so there are not a lot notes.]
Alex started things off asking about people’s dream adaptations. His was Ava DuVernay’s New Gods, which is actually happening. Also Jeremy Whitley’s Princeless [and then my notes read “funny She-Hulk stuff” so I am unsure if Alex was talking about wanting a funny She-Hulk adaptation of if he was being funny while talking about She-Hulk - IDK.]
Jessica answered with DC’s Blue Beetle and Booster Gold and something by John Rogers which I can’t read my own writing to see what it was [LOL I WAS SO TIRED, FOLKS.]
Alex talked about Green Lantern and there was a lot of discussion about that which my tired self did not totally follow.
Terri brought up Captain Marvel and how excited she is about that and everyone agreed.
Cath mentioned Sabrina the Teenage Witch and generally the horror comics in the Riverdale universe.
Alex said he is cautiously optimistic about the new Cloak and Dagger show, especially since it takes place in New Orleans. He is glad that the MCU is starting to decentralize NYC a little.
The next question was about adaptation disappointments. Alex said he already burned Green Lantern.
There was some conversation about the majority of the X-Men movies being disappointments with the exception of Logan.
Terri added that The Gifted is doing some interesting things.
Jessica said Arrow is a disappointment with it’s sad, dark, wannabe Batman narrative. The show started out trying to be political but just wasn’t smart enough to do it well. Also Flash and Supergirl started out good but got worse over time. On the other hand, Legends keeps getting better.
Terri said that she is loving Supergirl, but maybe that’s because she wasn’t a comics reader before watching it.
Erin talked about how at least Arrow birthed other interesting shows/characters. And also credit to Smallville for starting that trend.
Cath brought up Iron Fist and there was much complaining and venting about that show as a disappointment all around. Also comparisons with Dr. Strange.
Alex said that Into the Badlands is proof that Iron Fist didn’t have to be bad.
Some discussion about how Daredevil should have focused more on the law procedural aspect. Lots of Foggy love on this panel. Cath was surprised that anyone else liked Foggy. Jessica replied with - “oh my friend, come to tumblr.” Terri advised - “or maybe not... it’s a hole you maybe don’t want to go down.” Cath said - “if there’s Foggy down there, I’ll follow!” [lmao this panel was Wild for a Monday morning, folks.]
Terri vented about her Thanos issues - does he know life is going to reproduce? Jessica quipped “people gonna fuck”. Cath added - “or whatever that species does.” Jessica replied “spores gonna ... spore...” Terri added “beings gonna reproduce!”
There was a conversation about if Thanos had been doing it for love like in the comics, it at least might have made more sense. I believe the phrase “corpse bouquet” was used.
Erin talked about how fans were calling Thanos weak (and other more gendered slurs) for doing it out of love. Toxic masculinity caused them to seek another motive. [Yuck.]
Cath recommended Justice League Unlimited.
And wow that is all I managed to write down.
Before the panel, several audience members including myself held a little mini-panel about Riverdale. During the panel, both I and another of these audience members raised our hands and turned out we had the same question about non-superhero comic shows. Someone on the panel said “you can just say Riverdale.” There was also a quip about “just because The Walking Dead is on the panel description, doesn’t mean we have to talk about it, do we?” Anyway, Riverdale was discussed a bit but IIRC that was it outside of superhero comics. I think I want to write up a more general panel about adaptations for next year, but we’ll see.
This is my last formal panel write-up. Woo.
