Japanese QL Corner

We are back in the flood, with three (!) new Japanese QLs starting this week (we will be patiently waiting for @isaksbestpillow’s excellent subs on the new GL, so I’ll cover that next week), on top of our three ongoing shows. Three of these are streaming weekly on Gaga, with two provided via fansub (feel free to ask if you don’t know where to find them).

Love in the Air Koi

The much anticipated Japanese remake of Love in the Air is here, and it's off to a strong start! I'm a fan of the Thai original despite its flaws, and I am hopeful that a remake can elevate the core of the story while shedding some of the sillier plot aspects and filler. This first episode did exactly that, executing all the important beats of the original first episode in half the time, and establishing our core characters and their dynamics quite well. The casting is good all around, but Nagumo Shoma is perfect as Arashi, and he and Rei have good chemistry. I will look forward to this one every week.

Our Youth

Another strong start right out of the gate! This drama seems to be a second chance romance of sorts. We begin with Minase in present time (narrating about how he and Hirukawa can only communicate via letters, which I suspect may be incarceration-related?) before traveling back six years to high school to see their relationship unfold. Minase is a wealthy but lonely top student who teachers adore, Hirukawa is a poor and abused kid who teachers have already written off as a lost cause, and they are inevitably drawn to each other when Minase witnesses some of the horrible things Hirukawa is dealing with and keeps his mouth shut about it. This drama feels confident about the story it's telling and it's so beautifully shot. Hirukawa already has my heart. I especially like that his characterization feels nuanced and specific rather than archetypal; he is troubled but he's not a bully, and rather than rejecting care, he seeks it out from someone he perceives as trustworthy. I am along for this ride and excited to see where Minase's perspective takes us.

Smells Like Green Spirit

Ow, my heart. This week town gossip spread like wildfire about Mishima and Kirino's supposed romance, and both had a heart to heart with their mothers about it, with wildly different results. While Mishima's wonderful mother affirmed that she knows who he is and wants him to be happy and live his truth, Kirino was shamed and guilted by his homophobic wreck of a mother. We already know how much her grief weighs on him, and her inability to accept him will surely make things hard for him going forward. It was lovely to see he and Mishima escape together to their Shangri-La, however briefly, but I also felt sad that he kept his painful experience to himself rather than confiding in his friend. I just want them both to be okay. Yumeno also had a coming out of sorts, and while I was happy to see another supportive mother, I thought it overcrowded the episode to shove that in, too, especially with lots of time also spent on the villagers. I would have liked the focus to stay more tightly on our besties.

Love is Like a Poison

Welcome to the battle couple era!! Shiba and Haruto are settling into couple life (adorably), and Shiba is defiantly claiming Haruto as his partner for anyone who cares to know. And this week we get what we've been waiting for, as the story sets up the final boss, who appears to be an enemy of both Shiba and Haruto (the former professionally, the latter personally). Haruto is still not telling his Ryo-kun what he's driving after, but we got some helpful hints at the end of this episode about what is ultimately motivating his scamming. I am so excited to see them team up again to take this guy down.

Chaser Game W

I’ll keep this brief. This sequel season had little purpose, with a plot that changed randomly from week to week. They capped it off with a finale that made an insulting mockery of the homophobia real same sex couples in Japan face. This show sticks out like a sore thumb on this list of otherwise excellent Japanese queer media, and I’m very glad it’s over.

Servamp chapter 147 spoilers

I've had this in my drafts for a while, but I was busy with some stuff and I haven't been able to post... I mostly wrote about the references.

In the Mirror World, Lily is Mikuni's Servamp and he was named "Judith". (Book of Judith).

So Mikuni has 3 contracts? I guess it was just an assumption that Eves can only have one.

Another reference here is the name of the technique that was used. "Salome" (Girl Hell)

There are two women named Salome in the Bible and most likely the story of the one who requested the beheading John the Baptist was the one the technique was based on.

Girl Hell might be a reference to a collection of stories by Yumeno Kyusaku.

Mikuni: "Even with all the repetitions so far, it’s happened a few times.

When you and Kuro come into contact, it makes you remember the 'first loop' (he means the original timeline) and it looks like the Count’s magic isn’t very effective on the Servamps who were inside the shrine when it was activated. That’s why only your contact with Sloth causes the magic to come apart"

So yeah, that's why Kuro and Tsubaki remember the original world, but according to the previous chapters, only Tsubaki could tell that Mikuni "reset" the world a few times.

Uhm, hello? Did Mahiru and Tsubaki make a temporary contract? Is Tsubaki special and didn't need a name and item? Is it considered a temporary contract because only one of the conditions was met? Tsubaki wasn't given an item or another name, so...yeah. It could be that the same conditions don't apply to him?

Mahiru couldn't use magic because he died in the original timeline... His mother brought him back using a forbidden spell that she wanted to use for her parents... In the Mirror World, since Mahiru didn't die, he can use magic. Mikuni looks shocked doesn't he? Was that the first time Mahiru tried to use his magician power? Why didn't Mikuni try getting rid of Mahiru? I mean, he could have killed him using his Servamps and thus no danger of weakening the spell that he used to create the Mirror World. Perhaps, he can't.

Maybe it's a condition from Germaine? Like, c'mon, he's the creator of Servamps, is he really obeying Mikuni's every order? He must have given Mikuni some conditions and maybe not harming Mahiru is one of them because he's important to Kuro and Germaine might use him to get Kuro on his side. Just like Mikuni said, only Kuro and Mahiru are able to cause Germaine's spell to weaken.

So yeah...OMG, only two chapters left! :((

I got this a few days ago and I've been ruminating on it. I think I've finally settled on them? Plus notes on why I picked that song.

Here's the rules: Has to be from an official Disney Animated Classic (no Pixar, live action, or straight to vid sequels). Must occur within the run time of animation (no songs that only appear in the credits, ala True to Your Heart from Mulan). Only one song can be used from a particular film.

If The Next Right Thing is Trial 3 of the DRV3 Disney musical, This Wish is the end of Trial 6. This is Shuichi standing up and telling the villain that they're not going to give in to despair, honoring Kaede's wish with his own. Plus, it's a princess song. I gotta give the main protag the princess song.

Tenko doesn't have a complex about being strong and defending people, what gave you that idea?

A happy (mackerel eyed) family :) So uhm... I had this idea for an AU where Dazai takes his 'pupils' away from the Port Mafia after a change of heart (? Dazai is 17, Akutagawa 15 and Yumeno 6... or 7 o( ❛ᴗ❛ )o I think those are their canon ages :]

Get a bit of lore!! Or well just my thoughts on this AU hehe (its pretty recent). After knowing Odasaku for a while (like a year I think?) Dazai gets this idea on his head that to be 'happy' and 'a good person' like Oda he must be like him (? So what is it that makes Odasaku happy? His kids!! But then Dazai's like "but I don't have kids :(" until he remembers the poor kid he left abandoned in the Port Mafia basement and Akutagawa, who he knows has not treated well but... people can change right? :D He goes to Akutagawa "hey let's leave the port mafia just the two (and kyu) of us, your sister will be fine here don't worry" and of course he says yes to whatever Dazai wants (;w;) and then they both secretly steal Kyusaku from the basement™️and the kid's like "you literally were the one that put me in here" and Dazai "yeah but now I'm taking you out so the three of us can escape together :D" and Kyusaku's "yeah ok that sounds great :)" and inconspicuously run away from the mafia 👍 (Before this whole mission starts though Dazai goes to Chuuya asking him if he wants to leave the mafia and Chuuya's like "yeah right you obviously won't leave" but ahm... he does... and Chuuya ends up alone 👍) So the three of them are in the run because Dazai didn't really have a plan for more than a few days, this whole idea coming to him out in a whim (yes yes very ooc sorry orz). Of course the whole mafia is looking for them but it is Odasaku and Ango who find them first!! (in that very ditch from the drawing hehe). He ends up telling him the whole 'plan' and in the end Ango reveals himself to them as a double agent and speedruns Dazai's connection to Taneda. At the end, Dazai, Akutagawa and Kyusaku end up in the care of the ADA :D (or maybe they stay under the government's wing for a while until Fukuzawa is ready to take them) I'm guessing that now that Odasaku knows about Ango maybe he gets the courage to also leave the Port Mafia before all that Mimic fiasco (〃＾▽＾〃) (Thank you if you read this far!! <3)

Potential spoiler for future, or perhaps just a red herring? Either way, I'd like to know your opinion or what you speculate about this since you can read kanji and I can't lol. Unrelated but I like how Evil Line Records went "BTW we're not giving you guys Genny's past name, but we WILL give you some clue about it which potentially isn't legit. So you guys can figure that out on your own. We wont tell you tho."

I don't have a copy of the booklet myself, but I did see it a photo of it in a now deleted Tweet. I confirm that it's real and not just an internet hoax.

Saitou Souma is listed as the voice actor of character "夢野夢太郎" -- Yumeno Yumetarou. (Fwiw I would normally trust linktieria's Japanese comprehension over mine, but I assume it's Yumetarou because that's a real name. Then again, this is is Hypmic. Literally who the hell knows what reading they'll give it. I've seen other speculations of Mutarou, Boutarou, and (my personal favorite) Doriimutarou.) I think it's less that Hypmic is playing coy about the name and more that Hypmic's naming conventions are so batshit no one feels comfortable definitively asserting the reading.

The "yume" is the same "yume" from the brothers' last name. His name is like... DreamBoy DreamField. Little brother of IllusionBoy DreamField. I'm sensing a theme here lol.

Note: Once again, these are based off my own interpretation on their personalities. One of the things I wanted to do when writing these was to slightly mirror these four off of their counterparts when it comes to behavior and traits as a yandere.

Part One — Kaede, Shuichi, Kokichi, Kaito

✧Harukawa, Maki✧

Maki was wary of these unhealthy feelings at first. She thought it'd stay innocent since she values you so much. Despite what everyone else says, you've taken your time getting to know her. Because of that, she fully trusts and deems you as a keeper. The friendship was innocent and some of the best moments of her life. She wanted more. Maybe it was selfish of her to daydream about holding your hand and you confessing to her one day. It was all just fantasy, right? It wasn't, actually. It was a longing.

You're the only person she hangs out with, and she's okay with that. You have her deepest secrets (not entirely...) while she has yours. Maki always promises to never tell a soul about what you've confided to her. What is spoken under your home stays there, after all. She'll take everything she knows about you to her grave. She doesn't believe anyone else would know you on the level she does. That's preposterous. They were never the shoulder you cry on, the one who knows how you like your breakfast or that you'd like a certain meal at a specific time of day...only Maki would know. She's stuck to you—by the hip.

It's no secret how much she detests people entering your life. Calm as ever, she tolerates them for the time being. You assume Maki is uncomfortable meeting new people due to her social skills. Your assumption is partially correct. She is uncomfortable around these new faces, but at the same time, she hates them. If they as so much as look at you in a way that insinuates affection beyond friendship, Maki's blood will be boiling. You're busy talking to this person, yet her mind is elsewhere. All she can think about is how this person can be snuffed out. It's so violent, the confines of her mind. She was someone who was into violent and bloody video games and stories, but...she never considered the possibility of it happening in real life.

It stays on the back burner for a while. Could she really have the capability to enact these gruesome thoughts? Maybe...she thinks to herself as she watches on intensely. It would be necessary, in her own words. Losing you would be worse than someone else losing a friend, son/daughter, or whoever this person is to others. Maki needs to ensure you're by her side for years. Just enough for you two to date, get married, and have a family. A family that she has always wanted since the day she played house as a kid. 

✧Yumeno, Himiko✧

Himiko takes much time to love someone as deeply as any yandere would. Even more so than the more stubborn ones. It's not like she doesn't care for others. She's just tired and always in some form of slump. She goes through life the same way without a shred of change. Just how she likes it. Himiko goes with the flow of things and makes no effort to form friendships or long-lasting bonds. Content with her life, she spends many hours alone with her interests. That is until she meets you, her darling.

You actually scare her. Almost terrifies her. Being in your presence makes her remember you're the embodiment of her life, changing its course. For better or worse, she doesn't know. It does not matter since it's still a terrifying thing to face. So Himiko avoids you for a while. There are moments when you run into her, and some part of her mind says to stay. She's very conflicted and isn't willing to get out of her comfort zone. That's fine. She'll come around. When she does, it'll be similar to Maki. Himiko would be attached by the hip and follow you around. She strangely feels safe rambling about her fixations to you. The amount of time she puts into them is unhealthy, but it distracts her from thinking about things in life. You're a distraction as well...she's happy with that.

She's excessively codependent on you. Which is why rivals frustrate and scare her to death. Himiko has this overwhelming urge to burst into tears when you show signs of 'favoring' this person over her. She wouldn't consider herself a crybaby at all, but now crying is something she feels like doing when your bond is threatened. She won't admit to having these fears, choosing to bottle up her true emotions until they burst. When that happens, she vents everything to you. Unintentionally guilt-ripping you severely since she mentions the bullying and thoughts of death. Sometimes life is a pain. It's not worth it anymore.

Himiko feels like you're the only reason she gets up in the morning. A reason to press on another day. She doesn't want to lose that since it would be like a part of her has died. So she makes sure you're focused on her a lot. You're not a cruel person; she knows that, so that's why it is safe to say that her mindset and unhealthy lifestyle will concern you. Himiko feels safe and comforted that you're worried about her mental health, and she'll keep it that way if that means your attention is solely on her. After all, she can't live without you.

✧Amami, Rantaro✧

Rantaro is another person who takes time before actually falling for a person. He is cynical and has seen the worst out of people left and right. He always assumes that people are only out for their self-interests. He hates the flowery words people throw at him for his looks alone. They’re so surface-level. So superficial. Just like his father. The only way Rantaro would ever fall deeply for someone is if the person is genuinely kind and isn’t looking for something in return. 

That is where you come in. Rantaro tests you after your first act of kindness. It has to be a one-time thing. He was actually caught off guard by your actions. You continue to surprise him, and in turn, he keeps you around. Oh no, don’t assume it’s for some surface-level bullshit like having you is a one-and-done thing. No. It’s permanent and something real to him. Anyone who thinks he’s that shallow knows nothing about him. 

He hates how people see him as a playboy, but sometimes that has its benefits. Using people he could care less for is pretty handy, especially when it’s for your sake. None of the words he says to them will ever amount to how he feels for you. If any of his admirers ever mess with you, he will confront them privately before destroying their self-esteem. Oh, and if he’s feeling a little sadistic about it, he will blackmail them. They really do have a loose set of lips to trust him with their secrets, huh? Just because they were wearing rosetinted glasses. 

The one thing in life Rantaro dreams of is traveling to escape his life. Now, he has you to share it with. He plans to take you with him one day when the time comes, but if you’re showing signs of not desiring such a thing…he’ll start small. You two don’t have to leave the country immediately, maybe in another city or a cabin somewhere out of town. You are coming with him one way or another. He will be frank when he says he is selfish because everyone else is. He has finally found something in his life that is worth his efforts, and no one is taking that from him. Not even you. 

✧Hoshi, Ryoma✧

Ryoma is pretty similar to Himiko in the sense where you are probably his only reason to get up in the morning. However, that'd be selfish to burden you with such knowledge. If you knew this, that'd bring concern. It's not like he hates pity or being cared for…it just makes him believe he's acting like a spoiled child. It's safe to say that Ryoma is a very selfless yandere. He doesn't see you in a bad light, nor does he accuse you of doing any wrong. Why? Oh, that's because you're the only person who was ever nice to him. 

It's a cruel world we live in and he has seen the worst some days. His appearance plays a big factor into how he's treated and the focal point of his insecurities. Ryoma does not feel capable of doing a lot of things because of it. Still, he does want to prove himself to you; that he deserves the right to stand by your side after putting up with him. Ugh, it makes him sick to his stomach how hopeful and clingy that sounds. He just wishes that he could be as cool as those guys he's seen in shows. The ones who are so unbothered but know when to take action; things he is not. 

Rivals scare and irk Ryoma. All his intrusive and self deprecating thoughts play in his mind when faced with them. It's awful. Why does he keep imagining standing above their corpses? Since that day, your life has changed.

You were strong. As strong as an adult. An adult, who was training every second of their lives.

Your parents were happy. They called you their superhero. Their precious child.

Your appetite grew with your strength. At the age of five, you were eating as much as three sumo wrestlers.

To distract yourself, you start playing games, watching anime and reading manga.

You looked in a mirror. You were planning to dye your hair again. Because, only tips of your hair remained [H/C]. The rest of your hair became pink/lime green again.

How did you manage to forget to dye your hair? Well, because you were busy. With moving in. And with fixing the house.

Fitzgerald bought a house large enough to fit all of you. Unfortunately, the house itself need some serious fixing.

So, with your hair covered with a scarf, you, and the others, were painting walls, fixing light and so much more.

That's how you missed the time of hair dyeing.

For one moment you thought, that you could let your hair be. Show others the real you.

While you were preparing hair dye, you heard a noise from the common room. You put a towel around your head, covering your hair, and come to investigate.

Common room, currently, were almost empty. Elise and Q were playing a game of tag there. Right now, they can run there as much as they want. There wasn't any furniture, besides a large wardrobe. The old, heavy wardrobe creaked menacingly.

The wardrobe came with the house. It was also heavily damaged. The wood was old and rotten. Unfortunately, it was impossible to be taken apart, without getting splinters. So, to get rid of it, it had to moved whole. Unfortunately, right now, Kenji's strength were needed in moving materials and furniture.

Q and Else were having fun.

Then Q lost their balance and slipped. They bumped into a wardrobe.

You heard a creak.

The wardrobe was falling right on Q.

You react Immediately.

Like a lightning flash, you ran towards Q. The towel was laying on the floor.

You ducked under the falling wardrobe, and caught it, with both hands.

Holding the old furniture above your head, you start moving towards the large back door.

You, with the wardrobe in your hands and your pink/lime green hair, 'paraded' before BSD Cast, who hurry to the common room, after hearing the loud creak.

You throw the wardrobe outside through the back door.

After finishing with 'cleaning up', you turned towards Q. Child were still laying on the ground, really shaken up. You carefully approached them.

"Q? Dear, are you okay? Are you hurt?"

Kyuusaku shook their head. They carefully stand up, blink a few times, then looked at you with an adoring look. Q hugged you.

"You saved me! And your hair is so pretty!"

"Is it new hair dye, [Y/N]?" you heard Kyouka's question.

(So this is just me putting down the talents that I have picked out for them right now (all canon talents, games, manga, or anime included), my expand upon this AU as time goes on. Most of the talents I picked out are either because I find the idea funny or because it makes since to me.)

Shuichi Saihara: Ultimate Fanfic Writer (Considering what little we know about his pregame-self, I find the idea of this hilarious.)

Kaede Akamatsu: Ultimate Photographer (Wanted her to still have an Ultimate that was artistic in nature, but still a specific interest like how she’s the Ultimate Pianist and not the Ultimate Musician like in canon.)

Kaito Momota: Ultimate Gambler (Specifically this, but his luck fluctuates like Nagito’s and the only reason he has the title is because of his crippling gambling addiction.)

Rantaro Amami: Ultimate Yakuza (From what we can gather, Rantaro is a nepo-baby. But I can’t imagine him being set against his family like Byakuya was, and I guess the mafia is about family? So Yakuza.)

Kokichi Ouma: Ultimate Magician (Though he’s secretly a phantom thief as well. Pushing the Kokichi Ouma Kaitou Kid agenda.)

Maki Harukawa: Ultimate Detective (Wanted her to still have an ultimate dealing with corpses, but didn’t want her to still be a “fighter” type.)

Gonta Gokuharu: Ultimate Animal Breeder (Instead of having an extreme love for bugs, he has an extreme love for animals. Though he still loves bugs.)

Korekiyo Shinguuji: Ultimate Adventurer (He travels the world, to experience different cultures everywhere.)

Himiko Yumeno: Ultimate Traditional Dancer (Wanted her to have a talent where she could still perform on stage. She still thinks she’s at least psychic though.)

Kiibo: Ultimate Pop Sensation (He’s still a robot, but you can’t tell off of first glance. Not to mention, I thought it would be funny if he was a singer considering in canon his singing traumatized Shuichi.)

Tenko Chasbashira: Ultimate Street Performer (Wanted her to still have an active talent, but didn’t want it to be a “fighting” one. Not to mention, dancing can translate really well to fighting.)

Miu Iruma: Ultimate Cook (Wanted something that was still remotely science related, but wasn’t at all related to her being an inventor. Settled on Cook since cooking and baking actually has quite a bit of science involved.)

Kirumi Toujou: Ultimate Nurse (Wanted her to still have an Ultimate where she was actively helping people.)

Ryoma Hoshi: Ultimate Lucky Student (Thought the idea of the suicidal guy having amazing luck was ironic, too ironic to not do.)

Angie Yonaga: Ultimate Pianist (I also wanted her to have an Ultimate that was still artistically inclined.)

Tsumugi Shirogane: Ultimate Gamer (I can just see her saying that she’s just a plain old gamer and that there’s nothing special about her. And this way, she can still make dorky references.)
