Fixing United: FM24 vs Real Life
Once upon a time, playing as Manchester United on Football Manager would be seen as an easy save. The same went for Real, Barca, Bayern, Chelsea... it was just a load of cash, a load of rep, and a stroll in the park with any vaguely sensible tactics.
These days though the likes of United, Chelsea, Ajax, Valencia are in disappointing form. Big name sides lower down the table than before. The upside though is that suddenly it's more of a legitimate challenge to take over one of these clubs on Football Manager and restore former glories.
Fixing United:
I'm currently in my second season at United, having won the League Cup twice and the Premier League and the FA Cup in my previous season. We also did alright in the Champions League, though lost to Barcelona and they ultimately lost to City in the final - can't stop the Blue Moon entirely eh.
The big changes to my side were RCB, RW, and RB. Todibo in from Nice replaced the outgoing Varane (Saudi league), whilst Diogo Dalot jumped before being pushed (to Arsenal) allowing me to bag United fan Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen - and for less money than I sold Dalot for. Bargain!
United's right side is very feeble. The game treats Antony as a good winger and supplier, but reality is yet to prove that point. I kept the Brazilian for the season, and also played Sancho (who remains) but I've brought in much more talent.
Mohamed Daramy from Reims is in - the Dane linking up nicely with Højlund. Johan Bakayoko (PSV) and Roony Bardghji (FCK) are both in but back out on loan at their former clubs for one final season of development, giving me time to sell Amad, Pellistri, and maybe Sancho - should a PSG/Barca bid materialise.
As you can see, I'm working on Højlund and Evan Ferguson (both ardent United fans) to be all-out complete forwards. Man of the Moment types. They have the skill set to be all United need, and so far so good.
Rashford plays left and only left. If he has a form drop, like real life, then Garnacho/Sancho/Daramy get his spot. Simple as that.
Bruno is currently the top scorer at the club with 28 goals and 13 assists. This is Ballon d'Or form.
Sancho quietly gets on with his football. Sports Interactive clearly don't know ball.
Mount as a roaming playmaker or a box-to-box midfielder is where I find him strongest. He did take time to establish himself though, so fans should give him this time in real life. There's a good, clever player there, and United need brains on the field.
Tchouameni was a fluke signing, having already bagged Joao Gomes from Wolves to replace the despondent Casemiro and to allow a more tekkie Kobbie Mainoo to work his way in as a Herrera type of DM/ball winner. Still, we take it, he's class, and everyone gets rotated.
The back 5 is obvious, with Frimpong in for AWB more often than not but also more prone to injuries due to his athletic approach and the skillset drawing fouls.
Beyond this the academy is doing well. Dan Gore (on loan at West Brom) has had a season like Jimmy Garner did at Forest IRL, so he's possibly ready to squeeze into the first team squad - especially if I do sell a few people. Mount can then rotate more in CAM with Bruno, and that opens my LCM creative position for someone like a Gore.
The interesting thing for me has been realising that United does have issues, for sure. RW and RCB are the crucial two spots that if you fix, the team really clicks into place, but also it's the depth of talent and the specifics of deputies. In real life we have Lindelöf and Maguire; able EPL defenders but not the same playstyle as Martinez or Varane. Ten Hag can't achieve with these deputies. Variety between a Dalot/Frimpong offense and Wan Bissaka defence... sure, that makes sense, but the footballing culture shift of high line passing defenders versus bruisers who sit deep and battle constantly... it's not it.
For United to turn a new leaf and escape the Banter Era there has to be consistency in both recruitment and development. United's squad and academy need to be working to the same hymn sheet of what Ten Hag's first XI need and how to fit it. The right wing suits me as classic winger, but ETH will be happy having a winger, an inside forward, an inverted winger ala Antony - whoever. Options are a good thing when they can still adhere to the core principles or tenets of a manager's style. For me, I like having a Rashford/Garnacho swing in off the left to double up with the CF, and the LB/RW being wide support.
Maybe Erik wants this too, maybe not, but FM24 has me as Master and Commander in the Fergie role. Ten Hag isn't about that, nor should he be. Sir Jim Ratcliffe needs to come in and establish this setup with reputable, reliable professionals who can be held accountable. With these people in place, then United can begin a 5-year project of overhauling the squad bit by bit. This is where you'll see young, suitable talent brought in at fair prices on fair wages to serve as backup to the starting 11.

stole this idea from @jackiexxgroenen but as the decade is over, here’s some of my favourite united moments in (mostly) chronological order or at least season order:
berba hattrick against liverpool for so many reasons. a) the bicycle kick was sexy but b) stevie g’s basic ass kissed the camera when they came from 2-0 down to 2-2 only for Berbatov to break their hearts. they were in the relegation zone after this iirc (I went back to check and they fell to 16th. sexy.)
7-1 against Blackburn for no other reason than the idea of a Manchester United side scoring seven goals in a single match seems completely unrealistic at this point.
Rooney overhead kick.
that one FA cup match against Arsenal in 2011 where we played 7 defenders and somehow still won easily. hilarious.
Rafael squaring up to Tevez. Truly hang Van Gaal for war crimes for selling him.
19 and that’s a fact. even more impressive considering we won a grand total of five away matches all season. AND even more impressive our dumb ass somehow was up for a treble all the way up till May.
I’d 8-2 be an arsenal fan. god bless arsenal for making us feel good about ourselves.
the 3-3 at the bridge because I was there and it was wild
truly still don’t know how we were so bad yet only managed to lose the league on goal difference that season
Van Persie scoring against Arsenal.
Fletch coming back from his illness. I forgot who it was against but old trafford being packed on his return in the reserves singing only one Darren Fletcher was proper tear inducing.
that rvp winner against city
SHINGI HATTRICK AGAINT NORWICH. again @ The Hague pls try Van Gaal for war crimes thank you.
Van Persie hattrick againt Villa. Also I forgot what season it was but the Rooney hattrick against West Ham. The “what? fucking what” hattrick.
Not nineteen forever. Also arsenal having to give Van Persie a guard of honor.
The 5-5 that sent fergie into retirement only because I still laugh about it to this day
I wanna tell you, I might as well do, about a boy who can do anything. He comes from Belgium, his name is Adnan. Januzaj, januzaj, Januzaj. Literally nothing else happened that season lmao.
Wait no. Beating Leverkusen 10-2 on aggregate was sexy.
evra’s goal against Bayern too
Juanfield
Somehow???? Beating???? Manchester City 4-2???? And then losing the next three games after.
Van Gaal’s drunk speech at the poty awards
Ohhhhh yessssss welcome to Manchester United, Anthony Martial!!!! everyone say thank you louis van gaal.
Rashford debut against........that danish team I’m not even gonna pretend to know how to spell. everyone say thank you louis van gaal (2).
RASHFORD PREMIER LEAGUE DEBUT. everyone say thank you louis van gaal (3).
rash against city.
MARTIAL AGAINST EVERTON AT WEMBLEY. let me tell you I actually cried at that.
winning the FA cup marred only by the fact that we sacked Van Gaal like two seconds after the trophy ceremony. also jesse’s goal at Wembley. 🥺
honest to god I felt like Mourinho was the one on his debut when he was dressed in that suit and spent an hour before kickoff taking pictures with fans at old trafford. still think about that daily.
Zlatan at United. Fever dream that.
Honest to god I care so little about the league cup but I’m running out of good things to list so why not.
Stockholm was really emotional even if it was a terrible horrible game. It was also the moment I kinda came to terms with the hostage situation with Jose. Stockholm syndrome innit.
It’s actually whack that the season we finished SECOND is the season I can’t think of any positives. 3-2 vs. city was nice when you just take it in isolation and not remember the fact that we handed the league to them like three days later by losing to west brom. hate this team.
getting a women’s team after so long
the 2-2 against Chelsea last season because a) martial brace and b) Mourinho fighting that random coach
Juve in Turin for no reason other than Jose
Lucozade bottles???
Ole’s debut against Cardiff
Paris away ignoring everything that happened after
The girls winning the second division at the first time of asking
the girls beating Liverpool and generally having a really good season in their first season in the top flight
Williams and Greenwood establishing themselves
Martial and Rashford striking up a beautiful partnership

Havertz opens up with regards to Tuchel
Kai Havertz has opened up with regards to his adoration for Chelsea supervisor Thomas Tuchel guaranteeing that he's been left stunned by how the German has had the option to make something happen at Stamford Bridge. The 22-year-old assaulting midfielder, who joined the west Londoners the previous summer for £71 million from Bayer Leverkusen, proceeded, by giving his supervisor acclaim.
He's an exceptionally extraordinary mentor, he disclosed to Frankfurter Rundschau. It's noteworthy how he's figured out how to make something happen in a large portion of a year at the club. He generally gives us alternatives. We generally realize what to do. Each player knows what the individual close to him is doing. That is in every case a large portion of the fight in football. He takes us all extremely far. Me by and by, as well.
Saul hailed by Neville
Saul Niguez joined Chelsea on an underlying credit manage an alternative to purchase from Atletico Madrid on cutoff time day in the end minutes. The 26-year-old midfielder, who has justified a €5 million (£4.3m) credit charge and a €40 million (£34.3m) sticker price for his long-lasting administrations, has been tipped to lead Chelsea to the Premier League title by Gary Neville.
The previous Manchester United safeguard talked on Sky Sports about the Spaniard's appearance featuring Saul's unimaginable involvement with the club and global level. Saul is simply one more superb player, said Neville. He has monstrous involvement with the highest point of La Liga, huge involvement with the Champions League and at worldwide level. To know more about Chelsea Football Tickets click here.
"That is Chelsea's model and you see what they've done in the exchange window, it's been one more commendable exhibition from them. Neville added, guaranteeing he accepts that Saul's appearance is a solid sign of purpose: That is a great group. A group that is prepared to win more."
Ziyech set to miss AFCON
Hakim Ziyech could be set to miss the Africa Cup of Nations after his Morocco public group supervisor openly jousted him before the Blues winger terminated back on Instagram. Vahid Halilhodzic, the Morocco lead trainer, announced that the 28-year-old winger pretended a physical issue trying to abstain from playing when getting some information about Ziyech's oversight from the side.
"His conduct in the last two matches, particularly the final remaining one, was not that of a public cooperative person who as an innovator in the group must be a positive good example, said Halilhodzic, in a question-and-answer session. "He showed up later than expected and from that point onward, he even would not work."
Without precedent for my training profession, I have seen conduct that frustrates me, he added. A player who won't play a game, honestly an agreeable, on the appearance that he is harmed. The clinical staff made a few assessments and said he could play. He then, at that point would not heat up in the second half since he was frustrated to be a substitute. As far as I might be concerned, that kind of conduct is inadmissible. You can't chat with the public group. You are 100% there or you are not.
Ziyech posted an answer utilizing his Instagram, suggesting the breakout of remarks made by Halilhodzic: Next time you talk, talk reality then, at that point. Should Ziyech eliminate any confusion with the Morocco chief, he would become inaccessible for Chelsea from January into February alongside.
Edouard Mendy, who will probably highlight between the sticks for Senegal at the competition. Be that as it may, with pressures arriving at the edge of boiling over, Ziyech could sever his ties on the global stage yet thusly become an instrumental figure for Tuchel over the colder time of year duration.
Kounde angry with Chelsea move
Jules Kounde was allegedly left incensed by the breakdown in talks among Chelsea and Sevilla concerning the long-lasting exchange of his administrations. The Spanish side had broken their verbal concurrence with the Blues and increased the asking cost by an extra €15 million (around £12.8 million).
The choice came following Chelsea's £29.8 million offer of Kurt Zouma to West Ham, which was set up to work with the Kounde's appearance. The pressing factor was then pilled on the Blues to fulfill Sevilla's new needs yet notwithstanding the club's deference for the 22-year-old, Chelsea chose to end their interest leaving Kounde profoundly miserable.

Liverpool fc fa cup fixtures - Liverpool's fixture change means they now have five cup finals to save season -
This is now his team and one which has tasted Champions League and Premier League glory in the past two seasons. The manager has built a supreme winning mentality and therefore cannot allow those particular standards to drop in any game, despite the ongoing injury turmoil and a map to this year's final in Turkey being laid out.
He will know that his team needs to finish as strongly as it can domestically as well as in Europe if they are to return to challenging for a 20th league title next term. Tottenham confirm one positive test in Premier League’s fifth round of coronavirus testing | Football News
1197 tests were conducted during the fifth round of Premier League coronavirus testing; Tottenham say the individual is “asymptomatic” and will “self-isolate for seven days”
Last Updated: 03/06/20 4:47pm
Premier League players have now undergone five rounds of coronavirus testing
Tottenham have confirmed they have received the only positive test for coronavirus from the fifth round of Premier League testing results.
The fifth batch of tests took place on Monday and Tuesday this week.
A statement from Tottenham read: “We have been informed by the Premier League that we have received one positive test for COVID-19 following the latest round of testing at our Training Centre.
“Due to medical confidentiality, the individual’s name will not be disclosed.
“They are currently asymptomatic and will now self-isolate for seven days, in line with Premier League protocol, before undergoing further testing.
“We shall continue to strictly adhere to the Premier League’s Return to Training protocol, which ensures our Training Centre remains a safe and virus-free working environment.”
It follows the fourth-round results which were published last weekend, in which there were no new positive tests indicated.
A total of 12 individuals tested positive for COVID-19 out of 3882 from the initial four rounds.
All 20 top-flight clubs, who have now returned to close-contact training, are continuing to adhere to the latest medical advice from the Government and Public Health England to enable a phased resumption of sport in the UK, as a return to Premier League matches behind-closed-doors approaches.
March 5 – Pre-match handshakes banned in the Premier League. March 11 – Man City vs Arsenal is first Premier League game suspended; Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid the last top level game played in England. March 12 – Man Utd, Wolves play away Europa League ties behind closed doors, Rangers host Bayer Leverkusen in front of fans. March 13 – Football suspended following an emergency meeting between PL, FA, EFL and WSL April 15 – SPFL clubs approve plan to end the Scottish Championship, League One and league Two seasons. May 15 – League Two clubs vote to end the season with immediate effect. May 17 – Premier League players and staff tested for COVID-19. May 18 – Scottish Premiership curtailed, with points per game determining league positions and Celtic named champions. May 19 – Premier League clubs return to socially distanced group training. May 25 – Women’s Super League cancelled, with title and relegation to be determined. May 27 – Premier League clubs vote to resume contact training.
The Premier League released the following statement on Wednesday regarding the latest test figures: “The Premier League can today confirm that on Monday 1 June and Tuesday 2 June, 1197 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, one has tested positive from one club.
“Players or club staff who test positive will now self-isolate for a period of seven days.
“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency. No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.”
If any players from Manchester City or Arsenal, and Aston Villa or Sheffield United return positive tests, it would almost certainly rule them out of the respective teams’ fixtures scheduled for June 17.
‘Project Restart’ rules require a player who returns a positive test to remain away from group activities for 14 days (subject to the return of a negative test).

West Ham manager David Moyes says playing friendly matches will help his squad’s preparations for the Premier League restart
In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News on Friday, Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said test results from the first three rounds had been “reassuring” and the number of positive cases were at an anticipated level.
Testing will continue on a twice-weekly basis as the resumption of the season moves closer.
PL clubs to meet on Thursday
Premier League clubs will discuss a number of outstanding topics over the logistics of Project Restart at a shareholders’ meeting on Thursday, ahead of a second due to be held on June 11.
The use of neutral venues – which could affect up to five games including the Merseyside derby at present, is on the agenda.
Ongoing questions about the prospect of scrapping relegation, using five substitutes – as the Bundesliga has adopted since its restart – and whether clubs can expand their existing 25-man squads to deal with the intensity of the last nine games of the season are all due to be discussed.
So too will the topic of VAR, which has proved a polarising topic in its first season in the Premier League. FIFA has given leagues the opportunity to scrap its usage upon their restart, but the Premier League wants to keep it – as clubs believe the integrity of the competition would be compromised if VAR was not used for the entire season.

Football in England has been suspended since March 13 following an emergency meeting between the Premier League, Football Association, the English Football League and the Women’s Super League. The last Premier League match before the shutdown was Leicester vs Aston Villa on March 9.
Thursday’s conference call was the second meeting of Premier League clubs in the last two days after they unanimously agreed to resume contact training.
There have been 12 positive results across the first three rounds of coronavirus testing at Premier League clubs. Four positive tests were announced on Wednesday evening.

“Premier League Shareholders also approved a proposal that would see all 92 remaining matches broadcast live in the UK by the League’s existing broadcast partners: Sky Sports, BT Sport, BBC Sport and Amazon Prime.
“The planned kick-off times in the UK for live matches will also differ from the traditional times.”
Positive to see further steps on the return of football today
I’ve been pushing for as many games as possible to be free to view & for the return of the top league to support the whole football family
We are still working on govt guidance before we green light sports’ return
— Oliver Dowden (@OliverDowden) May 28, 2020
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters added: “Today we have provisionally agreed to resume the Premier League on Wednesday 17 June. But this date cannot be confirmed until we have met all the safety requirements needed, as the health and welfare of all participants and supporters is our priority.
”Sadly, matches will have to take place without fans in stadiums, so we are pleased to have come up with a positive solution for supporters to be able to watch all the remaining 92 matches.
“The Premier League and our clubs are proud to have incredibly passionate and loyal supporters. It is important to ensure as many people as possible can watch the matches at home.
“We will continue to work step-by-step and in consultation with all our stakeholders as we move towards resuming the 2019/20 season.”

‘Testing has provided a degree of confidence’

Sky Sports News Chief Reporter Bryan Swanson says the Premier League have been given ‘cautious optimism’ after four positive coronavirus tests were announced from the third round of testing
Sky Sports News Chief Reporter Bryan Swanson says the Premier League have been given ‘cautious optimism’ after four positive coronavirus tests were announced from the third round of testing
Sky Sports News’ chief reporter Bryan Swanson:
‘As soon as a return to contact training had been approved unanimously by clubs, the next step was for a resumption of matches.
‘There has been a shift in perception in the couple of weeks that has been helped by the testing. The Premier League clubs have taken part in three rounds of testing and there have been 12 positives cases, but 99.5 per cent of those testing have returned negative results.
‘Every positive result will have to have been taken seriously, but the relatively low figures will have given a degree of confidence for those players and managers that they are returning to as safe an environment as possible.
‘A lot can happen in the next three weeks but what clubs now have is that definitive line in the sand, they know what they are aiming for in terms of Project Restart. In the case of four of those clubs, they are playing on June 17, with the rest taking part over the weekend of June 19, 20 and 21.
‘The expectation from the Premier League is that the remaining 92 fixtures will be completed in a six-week timeframe. A lot of other items remain under discussion, notably where all the fixtures will be played.
‘The Premier League are also discussing a Plan B – what happens if there is a second peak of the virus and those fixtures cannot be fulfilled at some point throughout June and July? But clubs have that June 17 target to focus on and that is what they will chase.’
Neutral venues still on the table?
Sky Sports News’ chief reporter Bryan Swanson:
‘We still await confirmation on stadia and venues. This goes back to the authorities and police to see whether the clubs will get their way to play matches at home.
‘There is perhaps a suspicion that some of the big remaining games, the more high-profile games, may be at neutral venues.
‘It has always been the Premier League’s intention to finish the remaining 92 games, and they have the broad agreement to do that, albeit in the restrictions of a behind-closed-doors environment.
‘Where the question goes now is the stadiums that can and can’t be used. Neutral venues were the key plan going forward, but clubs have been reassuring the authorities that fans will not be gathering outside their stadiums as had been feared.
‘What will happen to specific clubs is a question that still needs to be answered.’
Home advantage wiped out?
While venues are still to be confirmed, there appears to be a trend in the Bundesliga when it comes to ‘home games’. There have been only five home wins in 27 Bundesliga games played behind closed doors – suggesting home advantage is wiped out without fans.
That ratio represents a 25 per cent slump for success on home soil since the league restarted and underlines how fans in the stands are the key component to home advantage.
According to a study published by The Conversation, home teams win 46 per cent of games on average – but that figure is slashed to just 36 per cent for the 191 games played behind closed doors in Europe’s top leagues and competitions since WWII.
In England, the hosts have won 45 per cent of games in the Premier League this season, 43 per cent in the Championship, 46 per cent in League One and 42 per cent in League Two.

Neville: PL players will be fit for June restart

Speaking on The Football Show, Gary Neville says the lockdown may have helped the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United, with key players returning from injury
Speaking on The Football Show, Gary Neville says the lockdown may have helped the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United, with key players returning from injury
Gary Neville said this week that he thought Premier League players would only need “two or three weeks” of training to get up to speed.
Speaking on The Football Show, he said: “I don’t see players’ fitness being a concern – I don’t see them needing four or five weeks. Even when they’ve had six weeks off for pre-season, within 10 days of going back in they’d be playing games again in pre-season.
“They wouldn’t be 100 per cent fit but these are uncharted times. I wouldn’t expect the players to be absolutely perfect. I feel two to three weeks is about right to get them back playing again.
“We’re constantly told throughout the season that players are overworked, play too many matches. What we can’t have is a situation where the players have had an eight-week break to then say they need six weeks of training to get back to fitness. That doesn’t feel right.
“If Harry Kane was borderline fit for the European Championships and was going to be back two weeks before the tournament, he’d be saying he was fit and ready to go. I don’t see the difference with this situation.”
The fixtures left to play
The full fixture schedule, including dates and kick-off times, is still to be confirmed but there are plenty of big derbies and crunch clashes at top and bottom still in store.
Liverpool, so close to the title, have Manchester City to play again, as well as Merseyside rivals Everton, while a north London showdown between Arsenal and Tottenham is on the agenda.
The race for European qualification is on, with Manchester United just three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea and Wolves and Sheffield United in the chasing pack.
And while Norwich are adrift at the bottom, only four points separate 15th-placed Brighton and 19th-placed Aston Villa.
It’s all to play for.
Where could Premier League teams finish?
How high or low could your club finish in the league this season? With 92 games left to play, we reveal the best and worst scenario for every club.
Data guru Ben Mayhew has simulated every possible result from the remaining 92 games and calculated each club’s range of possible final league positions – in addition to probabilities for each standing.
The results reveal it’s all to play for in the race for Champions League qualification and the battle for top-flight survival…

How good or bad is your team’s run-in?
Even if the restart does wipe out home advantage, the form of the 20 teams across the season to date still stands – with some facing sides with a far higher, or lower, average position than others.
For teams such as Newcastle in 13th, they may be looking on eagerly with five of the bottom six left to play. Less so perhaps for Crystal Palace, in 11th, who have every top-six side left to face, except Manchester City.
The title may be all but decided – so we’ll leave that out of the equation – but the race for the Champions League still looks like it would have plenty of twists and turns. So what do the run-ins say about the chances of the runners and riders?

FYI: 8 reasons why CR7 is the GOAT, therefore better than Messi. - CR7 is a better overall goals scorer. Better goals per game ratio than Messi. - CR7 is a better free- kick scorer. - Messi never prove himself outside Barca. CR7 makes his team better. Messi always rely on Xavi and Iniesta. - Messi constantly dissapears with Argentina when his team need him. - Messi usually dissapears in relevant Champion' matches. - CR7 is a better header scorer. (To be continue)
(part 2:) - CR7 is a player with more goals and assists in the history of CL, he is more decisive in this competition. - CR7 is more decisive with his national team. In WC 2010 Messi score 0 goal even North Korea score more than him. In WC 2014 only scored in a group stage. Don’t mention Copa America, he just scored 1 goals and next year missed penalty. All the greatest players of all times have won with their national team. But Messi won’t. I hope this informations will get in your head. Keep crying.
—
I’ve avoided getting involved in this “debate” over the last few years or so, but since you took so much effort in trying to convince me of something that isn’t even an argument to me, I have some time & I’m more than happy pay you the same courtesy in explaining to you with facts why this is so. Let’s do it by looking at each of the points you’ve included this so-called “information” I’m supposed to “get in my head”:
► “CR7 is a better overall goals scorer. Better goals per game ratio than Messi.”
False.
All-time, club and country?
CR: 595 goals/852 matches = 0.70 goal ratio
Messi: 562 goals/698 matches = 0.81 goal ratio
All-time, just club?
CR: 524 goals/714 matches = 0.73 goal ratio
Messi: 504 goals/581 matches = 0.87 goal ratio
All-time, just country?
CR: 71 goals / 138 matches = 0.51 goal ratio
Messi: 58 goals / 117 matches = 0.50 goal ratio
CR’s ratio is 0.01 higher and he has had 21 more international matches played than Messi. Alright. Collectively though, that 0.01 doesn’t make him “better overall”.
Conversion rates since 2009:
CR’s conversion rate total/outside the box: 15% / 5%
Messi’s conversion rate total/outside the box: 21% / 9%
What about when they’ve been at their very best, goalscoring-wise? Most goals scored in a calendar year:
CR: 69 goals (ratio: 1.17)
Messi: 91 goals (ratio: 1.32)
Not only is Messi better in terms of quantity of goals, he is also a better goalscorer when context is considered. How do they perform under pressure/when the team needs them the most? From 2016:
CR conversion rate when team is winning / when team is losing or drawing: 25% / 6%
Messi conversion rate when team is winning / when team is losing or drawing: 22% / 20%
Here’s an infographic (although it’s only updated up to 2015) to help better illustrate the importance of context & goalscoring when it comes to Messi and Cristiano:
(credit to Grup 14 and Sarah)
Goals after 1 dribble/2 dribbles/3 dribbles/4 dribbles:
CR: 45 goals/10 goals/2 goals/0 goals
Messi: 115 goals/40 goals/15 goals/4 goals
Pre-assisted goals:
CR: 13 goals
Messi: 90 goals
► “CR7 is a better free-kick scorer.”
Not quite.
Since Messi and Ronaldo have been playing together in Spain (2009-10 season):
CR has scored 20 goals in 291 attempts. This creates a conversion rate 6.87%.
Messi scored 17 free-kick goals with 212 attempts, creating a conversion rate of 8.02%.
Since 2012:
CR has scored 17; conversion rate = 7%,
Messi has scored 23; conversion rate = 10.5%
Even more recent, just for fun:
Messi has scored 3 free-kicks in 2017 alone
CR has converted only 3 since 2015.
What about in big matches?
Total free-kick goals in El Clasico:
Messi = 2
CR = 0
Messi’s total free-kick goals in World Cup and Copa America matches: 2
CA = 1 (vs. Panama)
WC = 1 (vs. Nigeria)
CR’s total free-kick goals in World Cup & Euro matches: 0.
With 43 attempts. On average, he has had a shot from a direct free-kick every 67 minutes he has been on the pitch (with a total of 2,884 minutes at major international tournaments) and has a ZERO PERCENT conversion rate.
► “Messi never proved himself outside Barca.”
The old “but can he do it on a cold, wet Tuesday night in Stoke?” argument is easy to lean on because he hasn’t, but it doesn’t change that it’s an extremely flawed argument. Let’s look at why - specifically England, where CR has proved himself outside of Spain since we’re doing a head-to-head comparison.
Lionel Messi has scored more Champions League goals against English clubs than he has against sides from any other nation.
On the 25 occasions that he has lined up against English teams, Messi has scored a total of 16 goals.
Arsenal - 9 goals in 6 matches.
Manchester City - 5 goals in 5 matches.
Manchester United - 2 goals (which helped Barcelona claim Champions League victories in Rome in 2009 and at Wembley Stadium in 2011
Never mind him having big performances against Bayern/Leverkusen, PSG/Lyon, AC Milan/Roma, Celtic/Rangers and etc. So, something tells me the kid from Rosario - who also played very well through the rough conditions he experienced there - CAN do it on cold, rainy night in Stoke. If you think he cannot simply because he hasn’t, that’s up to you. You’re entitled to your opinion. But the stats tell us another story.
► “CR7 makes his team better.”
Sure he does, he is one of football’s greatest. But Messi makes his even better.
Messi’s total major club trophies: 29 TOTAL (including 2 trebles, one of those years winning the sextuple)
8 League championships
4 Champions Leagues
4 Copas del Rey
3 UEFA Supercups
3 Club World Cups
7 Supercopas de España
CR total major club trophies (RM+Manchester United): 16 TOTAL
4 League championships
2 Copas del Rey
2 Champions Leagues
1 Supercopa de España
1 FA Cup
1 EFL Cup
1 Community Shield
3 Club World Cups
1 Super Cup
Stats since 2009, when Messi and CR started playing together in the same league:
CR + RM: 9 major Trophies
+ 1 Liga
+ 2 Copas del Rey
+ 2 Champions Leagues
+ 1 Supercopa de España
+ 2 Club World Cups
+ 1 Super Cup
Messi + Barça: 20 major trophies
+ 5 Ligas
+ 3 Copas del Rey
+ 2 Champions Leagues
+ 5 Supercopas de España
+ 3 Club World Cups
+ 2 UEFA Super Cups
All-time assists, club and country:
CR: 195, in 852 matches
Messi: 230, in 698 matches
► “Messi always relies on Xavi and Iniesta.”
Another archaic myth that Messi has destroyed year after year. Crazy that people are still hanging on to this, even after Xavi has been gone for two years now and Iniesta has been on/off form while dealing with playing in/out of position. Meanwhile, Messi has continued to improve and remain the greatest.
This myth seemingly makes sense due to Messi’s lack of titles with Argentina compared to his achievements at Barca - but again, this is a very flawed argument. Messi is the greatest player in the world and Xavi/Iniesta are two of the greatest midfielders/were one of the greatest midfield duos of this generation. Together, the three of them contributed to a Barça that won everything a club can within a short span of time. But how can we say in the same sentence that “Barça is only successful because they rely on Messi” AND “Messi is only successful because he relies on Xavi/Iniesta”? Grasping at straws like this really isn’t necessary, because the truth of the matter is that they simply formed a brilliant partnership together. Barcelona successfully utilized the talents of these incredible players together to succeed. Some facts to further debunk this:
During Messi’s record breaking year when he scored 91 goals, he was assisted only eight times by Iniesta and five times by Xavi.
Neither Xavi nor Iniesta have even assisted Messi the most in his career. It’s Dani Alves.
Messi continues to have the most Barcelona assists himself since 2003/2004. At Barcelona, he has more assists alone than Iniesta and Xavi combined in their club careers.
But maybe assists alone cannot determine the impact Xavi or Iniesta has on Messi. Alright, what about pre-assisted goals (goals pre-assisted by the scorer)?
As we said before, as of 2016, 90 of Messi’s goals were pre-assisted. This means that in ~23% of his goals, he started the play with key passes that ended up back with him scoring.
While CR, surrounded by Modric, Kroos, Ozil, Di Maria, etc. (I’m not sure why people like to act like he hasn’t been surrounded by top players) throughout his career sits at 13 pre-assisted goals.
Not convinced? Then let’s look at Messi’s performances for Argentina, where he has no Xavi/Iniesta. You said….
► “Messi constantly disappears with Argentina when his team need him. CR7 is more decisive with his national team.”
Which is again, false. Of all the big name players that play for Argentina, you call the man who is, for his national team, the…
Top scorer in all international competitions, including friendlies
Top scorer in International friendlies
Top scorer from the penalty spot
Top scorer in all U-20 international competitions
Top scorer in FIFA World Cup qualification
Top scorer when looking at goals scored in one calendar year
Top hat-trick scorer in all international competitions, including friendlies
Top assister in all international competitions, including friendlies
Only player that have scored against all 9 South American Nations
Key contributor in terms of keeping possession, averaging 63 passes per game and converting 86.2 percent.
“disappearing”, “dependent on Xavi/Iniesta” and "indecisive”?
Argentina’s National Team Win % in 2014 and 2018 World Cup Qualification with Messi: 65%
Without Messi? 22%.
Not quite.
I would suggest reading and watching [this analysis] for a better perspective on this. There is a video there which compares how Messi plays for Argentina and how he plays for Barcelona and it reveals that there isn’t much difference between how he plays for both sides, but there is a difference in the behaviour of his teammates. The confidence that Messi receives from his teammates in Barcelona is far different from what he is offered by his teammates in Argentina. As I said before, Barcelona has been able to successfully utilize Messi’s talents/abilities and have reaped every award there is because of it - something Argentina has failed to take advantage of so far.
In regards to CR with this, a reminder:
CR goals international: 71 goals / 138 matches = 0.51 goal ratio
Messi goals: 58 goals / 117 matches = 0.50 goal ratio
A difference of 0.01, with CR playing 21 more international games.
International Assists?
CR: 23
Messi: 37 (in 21 less matches)
International Goal Participation?
CR: Every 113m + 25s
Messi: Every 99m + 12s
► “In WC 2010 Messi score 0 goal even North Korea score more than him. In WC 2014 only scored in a group stage. Don’t mention Copa America, he just scored 1 goals and next year missed penalty.”
It’s true that Messi didn’t score in WC 2010. He did get an assist (the same amount as CR in the tournament) and was named MOTM once (the same number of times as CR in the tournament). Funny you should mention North Korea though, the ONLY team Ronaldo scored against in WC 2010. Once. After Portugal was already up 6-0.
Also, I’m not sure which WC 2014 you were watching. I was watching the one where Ronaldo’s only goal in this tournament was also in the group stage (against Ghana), while Messi scored four times in the group stages, assisted Di Maria’s goal which carried them in the round of 16, and carried his team to the final.
And lol ”don’t mention Copa America”? Why? Because Leo carried his team to the final twice in two years?
In 2015:
1 goal, 2 penalties (including the ONLY one of his teammates to do so in the final)
3 assists
In 2016:
5 goals
4 assists
(If you want to compare to CR’s Euro 2016, where he scored 3 and assisted 3).
Again, carried his team to the final. But sure, summarize the tournament as a “missed penalty” to fit your narrative.
Also worth mentioning that in 2007, at age 20, he also set up the game winning goal against the US in the opening 4-1 win, scored the game-tying first goal vs Colombia in their 4-2 win, assisted their only goal against Paraguay in the beginning of the knockout stage, scored the second goal in their quarter-final victory, and another in their 3-0 semifinal win - which lead to the first of the three Copa America finals he’s played in.
► “CR7 is a better header scorer.”
Yes, a 6′1 CR is better at scoring headers than a 5′7 Messi (*pretends to be shocked*). CR just passed Aduriz for this record a few months ago actually, which isn’t surprising - Cristiano has shown he’s very good in the air. Nobody is denying that Cristiano has great qualities as a player. But as I’m sure you would agree, this argument alone, does not cement anyone as the greatest of all time. Also notable to mention that Barça as a team - tactics/style kept in mind - score less headers. Next.
► “Messi disappears in relevant Champions League matches.”
Did you even try with this one? A few examples of how wrong this is off the top of my head?
UCL Final vs. Manchester United, 2009
UCL Quarterfinals vs. Arsenal, 2010
Scored four goals in the second leg, the first three in just 21 minutes
UCL Semifinals vs. Real Madrid, 2011
Scored twice in ten minutes in the first leg. We advanced to the final 3-1 on aggregate.
UCL Final vs. Manchester United, 2011
UCL Semifinals vs. Bayern, 2015
Nobody will ever forget his two goals in this extremely ‘relevant’ match, as you put it.
Was also at the heart of Neymar’s second goal in the second leg.
UCL Final at Berlin against Juventus, 2015
Messi’s pass to Alba sparked the first goal scored by Rakitic
Messi was at the heart of the counter attack which gave Barca the lead again.
He wasn’t on the scoresheet, but he made his presence felt.
It’s true that our last two Champions League tournaments were not what we hoped they would be, but in our ‘relevant’ matches then, Leo still scored 3 against Arsenal over both legs and scored a crucial penalty in our historic PSG comeback this year.
I couldn’t help but notice how you didn’t have a counter-response about CR and ‘relevant’ CL matches. Could it have to do with numbers like this, from last season?:
^ (And again, credit to Sarah for this.)
And speaking of ‘relevant’ matches, why not mention ‘relevant’ league matches?
Credit to Grup 14 for the graph. Messi’s line (higher than CR’s in all aspects) shows a relatively steady performance in games (goals/assists) that isn’t affected by the quality of the opposition - so he’s there (more or less) regardless of ‘relevance’ of the match. Meanwhile, as we can see, CR follows an obvious increase in performance as the quality of the opposing team decreases.
► “CR7 is a player with more goals and assists in the history of CL, he is more decisive in this competition”
CR does have an advantage when it comes to assists in this competition (37 in 145 vs. Messi’s 25 in 115) - the only competition which he surpasses Messi in assists. And I’m certainly not denying that he’s decisive in this competition. Nobody could.
But with goals:
CR: 104 goals in 145 games = 0.72 goals/game
Messi: 94 goals in 115 games = 0.82 goals/game
And ultimately, titles:
CR: 3
Messi: 4
► “All the greatest players of all times have won with their national team. But Messi won’t.”
Cruyff. Raul. Puskas. Eusebio. Zico. Maldini. Ballack. Bergkamp. Figo. Gascoigne. Laudrup. And the list goes on.
The greatness of these players, all who have never won an international title, are not questioned. A list Cristiano was also on just last year. Did you create this entire argument after the goal Eder scored, which CR watched from the bench?Did that moment make you believe it can overshadow all of the facts above?
If you want to get technical, Messi won with Argentina in 2008, when he became an olympic champion and was highlighted as one of the standout players in the tournament.
Neither CR nor Leo has lead their team to a World Cup.
But it is true that Messi hasn’t won a Copa America, despite playing in 3 finals and standing out in each one of those tournaments.
► Other:
Most Ballons d'Or (5): Messi
Most consecutive Ballons d'Or (4): Messi
Most goals in La Liga history (347): Messi
Most assists in La Liga history (137): Messi
Most goals scored in a La Liga season (50): Messi
Most goals scored in a club season (73): Messi
Most goals in El Clasico history (23): Messi
Most assists in El Clasico history (13): Messi
All I have to say is that if after going through the facts, doing some reading (some suggestions = Lionel Messi is Impossible, Beyond stats and stunts - The gulf between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo widened in 2016, Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo - Who’s the best goalscorer?, Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo - What defines a big-game player?, and the Messi vs. Ronaldo resource), some watching/listening (check out Lionel Messi - The World’s Greatest, CruijffCast - Episode 7 - Messi x Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi vs. No Space, and Lionel Messi - The 10 Smartest Skills Without Touching the Ball), and maybe just watching some of Messi’s matches that will show you the things stats can’t fully capture… if you believe that headers in a differing styles of play and one international title can justify your entire argument, then there’s no more convincing I can do. This is why I like to stay out of this debate these days. Because for me, although CR is undoubtedly one of the great players of this generation, the greatest of all time isn’t debatable.
So if you haven’t guessed it by now, there are no tears over here. If you need a tissue though, let me know!
#imagine getting me started on this#imagine thinking i wouldn't be extra af in my response#anyway good night if u read through the whole thing you're the real 🐐 here#lionel messi#leo#Anonymous

Toe Poke Daily: Tottenham 2-7 Bayern isn’t the biggest Champions League defeat ever, or even the most goals
Craig Burley says Mauricio Pochettino got his tactics wrong and should shoulder the blame for Tottenham’s record-setting defeat against Bayern.
The Toe Poke Daily is here every day to bring you all the weirdest stories, quirkiest viral content and top trolling that the internet has to offer, all in one place.
Jump to: Gnabry gets 10/10 from L’Equipe | Two goals = two tattoos | Henry, Pires look away now
Bayern Munich’s ruthless 7-2 devastation of Tottenham in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday night is certainly right up there in the UEFA annals — Arsenal fans, don’t get too cocky about it as your team didn’t do much better — but it’s not the biggest single-match win in tournament history.
No, barring the preliminary rounds of the competition, the biggest margin of victory ever amassed in the Champions League is 8-0, while the most goals scored in one match is 12 — Borussia Dortmund 8-4 Legia Warsaw in 2016.
– Cristiano Ronaldo’s fitness secrets … pizza is OK – Ibrahimovic a master of everything … except bowling – Balotelli’s daughter a mascot for rival team
Real Madrid were the first to administer an octo-drubbing when they netted eight unanswered goals against Sevilla at the Bernabeu in the 1957-58 European Cup quarterfinals, but seeing as modern football has the Champions League starting in 1992-93, here are the top scoring games to date from the competition in its new format.
And here’s a list of the other seven goal margins:
7-0 – Juventus vs. Olympiakos — Dec. 10, 2003 7-0 – Arsenal vs. Slavia Prague — Oct. 23, 2007 0-7 – MSK Zilina vs. Marseille — Nov. 3, 2010 7-0 – Valencia vs. KRC Genk — Nov. 23, 2011 0-7 – BATE Borisov vs. Shakhtar Donetsk — Oct, 21, 2014 7-0 – Barcelona vs. Celtic — Sept. 13, 2016 0-7 – NK Maribor vs. Liverpool — Oct. 17, 2017 7-0 – Liverpool vs. Spartak Moscow — Dec. 6, 2017 7-0 – Manchester City vs. Schalke — March 12, 2019
Serge Gnabry gets 10/10
If you score four goals, you expect to be given a perfect 10 for your performance but it doesn’t come that easily for French paper L’Equipe.
The publication is notoriously stingy for giving 10/10 in its player ratings and has only done so 11 times previously in history — twice to Lionel Messi.
In fact, here is the full list:
Lucas Moura – Spurs vs Ajax, 2019 Dusan Tadic – Ajax vs Real Madrid, 2019 Neymar – PSG vs Dijon, 2018 Carlos Eduardo – Nice vs Guingamp, 2014 Robert Lewandowski – Borussia Dortmund vs Real Madrid, 2013 Lionel Messi – Barcelona vs Bayer Leverkusen, 2012 Lionel Messi – Barcelona vs Arsenal, 2010 Lars Windfeld – Aarhus vs Nantes, 1997 Oleg Salenko – Russia vs Cameroon, 1994 Franck Sauzee – France U21s vs Greece U21s, 1988 Bruno Martini – France U21s vs Greece U21s, 1988
However, after Serge Gnabry’s four goals for Bayern in the 7-2 win over Tottenham, you can make that 12.

Gnabry, a former Arsenal player, was delighted with the win over his former club’s rivals and used an old favourite to refer to the “red” of Bayern taking over London.

Arsenal were looking for a winger in the summer … just saying.
Two goals, two tattoos
Club Brugge striker Emmanuel Dennis was so certain that he wouldn’t be able to breach Real Madrid’s defence that he went all out and promised to get a tattoo if he scored at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night.
“This is a dream. A lot of people didn’t even think they would come here to play. If I score then I will get a tattoo on my skin,” he said during a video posted on Brugge’s Youtube channel before kick-off.
It took the Nigerian forward precisely nine minutes to break the deadlock, bumbling a shot past Thibaut Courtois to propel Brugge into a shock early lead.
Dennis then added a second goal shortly before the break, which he marked by mimicking Cristiano Ronaldo‘s trademark “Si!” celebration.

— Emmanuel B Dennis (@dennisblessed42) October 1, 2019
Real eventually restored parity to salvage a 2-2 draw, but that won’t prevent Dennis from sticking to his word and keeping up his end of the bargain.
“I guess I will now have to get two tattoos,” he told Belgian broadcasters RTL after the game.
That’s the rule. Two goals = two tattoos. It’s only fair.
Henry, Pires, look away now
It’s taken the best part of 15 years, but somebody has finally succeeded where Thierry Henry and Robert Pires failed all those years ago.
Indeed, Shakhtar Donetsk’s Under-19 side avoided the embarrassment suffered by the two aforementioned Arsenal legends by successfully dispatching a two-man penalty routine.

Henry and Pires made a horrible mess of the same Cruyff-inspired manoeuvre during a game against Manchester City back in 2005.
Nice to see that it’s still exactly as awful as we remember it being.

Liverpool’s defeat to Arsenal last night represented yet another blow to this team’s quest for greatness, with another potential unique selling point of this title victory chipped away.
Despite looking for so much of this season like one of the greatest Premier League teams ever, and indeed winning the title with a record-breaking seven games to spare, there’s the sense now that the Reds have not quite achieved a place in footballing folklore as they might have done.
On the 17th of December, the quadruple dream ended with defeat in the Carabao Cup; on the 29th of February, defeat at Watford ensured Arsenal remain the only Invincibles of the modern era; on the 3rd of March, defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup meant the treble had to be scratched off the list; eight days later Atletico Madrid’s surprise win at Anfield prevented a title and Champions League double; and now, Liverpool can no longer mathematically break Manchester City’s record for 100 Premier League points.
MORE: Video: Jurgen Klopp blames other Liverpool players for Virgil van Dijk howler vs Arsenal
Luckily for those who care about these things, Liverpool can add one more record to the list before the campaign comes to a close – a record points margin is still in sight if they can win their final two matches and City drop points. Pep Guardiola’s side hold the record with a 19-point margin when they won the league in 2017/18, with Jurgen Klopp’s men currently 18 points clear at the top.
Still, while the debate about the very greatest sides necessitates picking apart the finer details of their glory, it does seem like football is heading in a worrying direction of this is a conversation we’re going to be having every year.
The very fact that the same super clubs dominate in ways that they never did before now means that winning on its own is no longer enough – fans crave something to make their success stand out, whether it’s a treble, an unbeaten season or a record points total.

Liverpool can still break one Man City title record this season, but does this obsession with greatness reflect a worrying trend in football?
July 16, 2020 10:41
Thankfully in England, we’re not quite yet in that territory as, of course, the fact that Liverpool have won their first league title in 30 years this season is enough of a story in itself, and we had the Leicester City miracle of 2015/16, but in general the same clubs tend to dominate the top four spots and the domestic trophy wins; in the last twenty years of the FA Cup, once lauded for its ‘magic’, the final has been won by one of Manchester United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool on all but just two occasions, with one of those teams also being the runner up on eight occasions. It’s a similar story in the League Cup, which, paradoxically, has never been particularly highly valued by the biggest clubs, but as such has almost grown in importance as part of the collection, as part of a ‘domestic treble’ because winning a league title on its own is no longer exciting enough.
This is even more true in other leagues: Bayern Munich have just won their eighth Bundesliga title in a row, something that had never been done before, with four different teams winning the eight titles prior to that; in Serie A, Juventus are probably going to make it nine titles in a row this term. When winning what was once considered the most difficult and impressive trophy become so routine, it’s little wonder it no longer feels that satisfying.
It’s telling that there was never really any talk of points totals, winning streaks or unbeaten runs until the super club era really took off in the last decade or so.
This interaction between Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane earlier this season sums up how much the conversation has changed.
When Carragher talks about this Liverpool team finishing on more points than United’s treble winners, Keane responds: “Let’s not go down that road. That’s ridiculous. You talk about points, but the bottom line is that when you win the trophy, you get one medal. You don’t turn the medal over and it tells you how many points you won the league by.”
It feels like this Liverpool team deserves to go down as one of the greats, and it might still take one more record to cement that, but fans should relish this team’s success regardless, or we’re perhaps all guilty of feeding a footballing culture that could soon suck all the joy out of the game.

Bundesliga Season Preview Part One: Mid-tablers, strugglers and newcomers
VAVEL UK takes a look at nine of the teams hoping for big things this year.
Hertha BSC Team Photo. | Photo: Ottmar Winter/Bongarts/Getty Images.
After a long wait, the Bundesliga finally makes its return this summer and it will be a welcome relief for German football fans after the failure of the Germany squad at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Many will be wondering if this is the season that someone finally manages to topple the supremacy of Bayern Munich. The rest will laugh off such delusions. But even if the status quo at the top remains, there’s European places to be won and the dreaded drop to be avoided.
In the first part of our season preview, we look at last season’s lower-half finishers – Hertha BSC, Werder Bremen, FC Augsburg, Hannover 96, 1. FSV Mainz 05, SC Freiburg and VfL Wolfsburg, as well as the newly-promoted pair of Fortuna Düsseldorf and 1. FC Nürnberg.
Hertha BSC
Last season: 10th
Manager: Pál Dárdai
Pre-season friendlies: RSV Eintracht 1949 (7-0 W), SC Westfalia Herne (2-0 W), MSV Duisburg (1-0 W), MSV Neuruppin (9-1 W), FK Dukla Prague (3-2 W), Atalanta (3-2 L), FC Liefering (4-1 W), Aiginiakos (7-0 W), Hallescher FC (4-1 W)
DFB-Pokal First Round: 2-1 win vs Eintracht Braunschweig
Opening game: Home to Nürnberg (25 August)
Transfers in: Valentino Lazaro (Red Bull Salzburg), Javairô Dilrosun (Manchester City U23), Lukas Klünter (1. FC Köln), Pascal Köpke (Erzgebirge Aue), Marko Gruji? (Liverpool, loan)
Transfers out: Mitchell Weiser (Bayer Leverkusen), Julian Schieber (Augsburg), Genki Haraguchi (Hannover), Nils Körber (VfL Osnabrück, loan), Maximilian Pronichev (Aue, loan)
The pressures of a failed campaign in Europe helped to stop the upward moment of die Alte Dame under Dárdai, but they rarely slipped much lower than their eventual finishing position of tenth, sitting comfortably in mid-table for the majority of the season.
It’s difficult to foresee things being any worse this time around. Their new signings have been unspectacular but all have the potential to be big hits, with the signings of Dilrosun and Gruji? particularly interesting. The latter, on loan from Liverpool, may even start the opening game against Nürnberg despite only joining training this week. Klünter has also shown promise for Köln whilst Köpke provides another option up top, especially with Davie Selke out for the first couple of months of the season.
Weiser is the only notable departure, meaning that Dárdai will be under no pressure to bed in the new faces straight away, and that should stand them in good stead, especially in the early stages of the season, to push for a third top half finish in four years, provided that last year’s plateau was only a temporarily blip.
Werder Bremen
Last season: 11th
Manager: Florian Kohfeldt
Pre-season friendlies: FC Eintracht Cuxhaven (8-0 W), OSC Bremerhaven (5-0 W), 1. FK P?íbram (1-1 D), Duisburg (1-0 W), Köln (1-0 L), Rot-Weiss Essen (1-0 L), Huddersfield Town (1-0 W), Arminia Bielefeld (1-0 W), FC Groningen (0-0 D), VVV-Venlo (1-1 D), Villarreal (3-2 L)
DFB-Pokal First Round: 6-1 win vs VfR Wormatia Worms
Opening game: Home to Hannover (25 August)
Transfers in: Kevin Möhwald (Nürnberg), Yuya Osako (Köln), Martin Harnik (Hannover), Felix Beijmo (Djurgårdens IF), Jan-Niklas Beste (Borussia Dortmund U19), Davy Klaassen (Everton), Claudio Pizarro (Köln), Stefanos Kapino (Nottingham Forest)
Transfers out: László Kleinheisler (FC Astana), Sambou Yatabaré (Royal Antwerp), Zlatko Junuzovi? (Salzburg), Leon Guwara (FC Utrecht), Thomas Delaney (Dortmund), Jérôme Gondorf (Freiburg), Justin Eilers (Apollon Smyrnis), Ulisses Garcia (BSC Young Boys), Robert Bauer (Nürnberg, loan), Lennart Thy (Büyük?ehir Belediye Erzurumspor), Niklas Schmidt (SV Wehen Wiesbaden, loan), Fallou Diagne (Konyaspor)
Last season took an almost clichéd feel. An awful start, which resulted in the current boss being replaced by the young coach of the under 23. He did enough to earn a permanent appointment, and Bremen flourished in the spring to turn attentions from battling relegation to dreams of Europe that never quite came to pass. That was the story of 2016-17 just as much as it was of 2017-18, although the revival wasn’t quite so dramatic this time around.
But can Kohfeldt succeed where Alexander Nouri failed and take Bremen to the next level? There are reasons to be optimistic on the Weser. No matter how much he struggled in England, Klaassen was a glamour signing suited to an upwardly-mobile club, whilst they are so bursting with attacking options that the re-signing of Pizarro is more a sentimental luxury than a necessity.
If they can avoid the early-season blues that have seen both of their previous head coaches, than a return to Europe after nearly a decade could well be possible. They are more reliable at the back then they have been in recent years, with Ji?í Pavlenka a top class goalkeeper. Further forward meanwhile, there will be goals if they can find the right combination around new skipper Max Kruse. All being well, this will be their best season for some time.
FC Augsburg
Last season: 12th
Manager: Manuel Baum
Pre-season friendlies: SC Austria Lustenau (1-1 D), Würzburger Kickers (2-0 W), Middlesbrough (2-1 W), Sportclub Olching (3-0 W), Borussia Mönchengladbach (2-1 L), Newcastle United (1-0 W), Athletic Club (1-0 L)
DFB-Pokal First Round: 2-1 win vs TSV Steinbach Haiger
Opening game: Away at Düsseldorf (25 August)
Transfers in: Schieber (Hertha), André Hahn (Hamburger SV), Felix Götze (Bayern Munich), Fredrik Jensen (FC Twente)
Transfers out: Ioannis Gelios (FC Hansa Rostock), Gojko Ka?ar (Anorthosis Famagusta), Marwin Hitz (Dortmund), Moritz Leitner (Norwich City), Daniel Opare (Antwerp), Marcel Heller (SV Darmstadt 98), Takashi Usami (Düsseldorf, loan), Tim Rieder (Darmstadt, loan), Shawn Parker (SpVgg Greuther Fürth)
Augsburg seem perennial pre-season contenders to go down, but it’s been a while since they’ve been in a genuine relegation dog-fight. Last year was little different, and if they had won more than two games in their last 13 games, they would have ended up a lot higher in the table than they eventually did.
Losing Hitz is of course a blow, leaving Andreas Luthe and Fabian Giefer to battle it out over who plays in goal, but much will be unchanged in front of them this season. Philipp Max is one of the most dangerous players in the league, despite being a left-back, and will have a point to prove having been snubbed by Joachim Löw so far. Further forward, Alfreð Finnbogason will hope to add to his tally of goals last season, despite currently being injured. He’ll have plenty of support too, especially with Hahn returning to his spiritual home.
There is little cause to believe that Augsburg will struggle this season, and if some of the bigger clubs struggle there could even launch another challenge for European football, but mid-table seems to be the most likely destination once again for Baum’s men.
Hannover 96
Last season: 13th
Manager: André Breitenreiter
Pre-season friendlies: Eiderstedt-Auswahl (14-0 W), SV Ramlingen-Ehlershausen (7-0 W), TSV Havelse (4-0), FSV Wacker 90 Nordhausen (2-0 W), PEC Zwolle (3-1 W), Wolfsberger AC (3-2 L), Udinese (5-1 W), Udinese (2-1 W), Athletic Club (2-0 W)
DFB-Pokal First Round: 6-0 win vs Karlsruher SC
Opening game: Away at Bremen (25 August)
Transfers in: Josip Elez (HNK Rijeka), Leo Weinkauf (Bayern II), Takuma Asano (Arsenal, loan), Kevin Wimmer (Stoke City, loan), Genki Haraguchi (Hertha), Walace (Hamburg), Bobby Wood (Hamburg, loan)
Transfers out: Elias Huth (1. FC Kaiserslautern), Felix Klaus (Wolfsburg), Salif Sané (Schalke 04), Charlison Benschop (FC Ingolstadt 04), Kenan Karaman (Düsseldorf), Harnik (Bremen), Sebastian Maier (VfL Bochum), Florian Hübner (1. FC Union Berlin), Manuel Schmiedebach (Union Berlin, loan), Jonathas (Corinthians, loan)
Making their return to the Bundesliga after a year away, a strong start last season gave Hannover the credit in the bank they needed to avoid any serious concerns over possible relegation. Their strong home form helped as way but an unremarkable squad did struggle at times, including a five-game losing streak in the early spring.
Klaus, Sané and Harnik are all big loses, and a lot of their new faces all struggled with their old clubs last season, including the Hamburg duo of Walace and Wood, plus Stoke’s Wimmer, with all three suffering relegation with their clubs. They have kept last season’s top scorer Niclas Füllkrug though, despite strong interest from Gladbach, with speculation that he’s on the verge of signing a new deal.
Any sort of drop off from last season will see Hannover fighting to avoid a return to the 2. Bundesliga, meaning Breitenreiter will face a big test of his coaching skills to get the best out his side. Another 15 goals from Füllkrug would serve them well and they will hope young talents like Ihlas Bebou can take off as well.
1. FSV Mainz 05
Last season: 14th
Manager: Sandro Schwarz
Pre-season friendlies: DJK SV Phönix Schifferstadt (12-0 W), Rhein-Nahe Auswahl (10-0 W), VfB Ginsheim (5-1 W), KFC Uerdingen 05 (2-1 W), Royal Charleroi Sporting Club (2-0 W), Köln (5-3 L), West Ham United (1-1, lost on penalties), Athletic Club (0-0, won on penalties), Fiorentina (0-0, lost on penalties), Celta de Vigo (2-1 W)
DFB-Pokal First Round: 3-1 win vs Aue
Opening game: Home to VfB Stuttgart (26 August)
Transfers in: Phillipp Mwene (Kaiserslautern), Jean-Philippe Mateta (Olympique Lyonnais), Pierre Kunde (Atlético Madrid), Moussa Niakhaté (FC Metz), Aarón Martin (Espanyol, loan)
Transfers out: Jonas Lössl (Huddersfield), Suat Serdar (Schalke), Leon Balogun (Brighton & Hove Albion), Marin Sverko (Karlsruhe, loan), Abdou Diallo (Dortmund), Kenan Kodro (FC Copenhagen), Nigel de Jong (Al Ahli SC), Yoshinori Muto (Newcastle), Aaron Seydel (Holstein Kiel, loan)
Mainz were perhaps fortunate that there were worse teams than them in the league last season. They spent most of the Rückrunde in the play-off spot, and couldn’t string two wins together until the matchdays 32 and 33, although those wins over RB Leipzig and Dortmund were enough to keep them up, although they finished with their worst points tally since they went down under Jürgen Klopp in 2007.
Nevertheless, they didn’t panic into sacking Schwarz and they clearly thing enough of him to give him a second crack. It won’t be any easier though. Serdar, Balogun and Muto will all be missed, whilst there are several injury concerns already. They will be hoping their new players will take off, although Niakhaté couldn’t have had a worst start, getting sent off in three minutes in the cup against Aue.
Alexandru Maxim had one of his better days in that game, scoring twice, and a good season from the Romanian will help their cause. 20-year-old Ridle Baku will be one to watch after he burst onto the scene late last season, scoring twice in his first three league games for the club. It will be tough for him, and the other youngsters, to thrive if Mainz struggle though.
SC Freiburg
Last season: 15th
Manager: Christian Streich
Pre-season friendlies: FC Waldkirch (15-0 W), SC Lahr (8-2 W), Kehler FV (7-1 W), TuS Efringen-Kirchen (14-2 W), FC Ravensburg (9-1 W), Swansea City (3-0 W), Regio-Auswahl (2-1 W), RC Strasbourg Alsace (3-2 L), Real Sociedad (1-1 D)
DFB-Pokal First Round: 5-3 win on penalties (after 2-2 draw AET) vs Energie Cottbus
Opening game: Home to Eintracht Frankfurt (25 August)
Transfers in: Mark Flekken (Duisburg), Dominique Heintz (Köln), Luca Waldschmidt (Hamburg), Philipp Lienhart (Real Madrid), Gondorf (Bremen), Brandon Borrello (Kaiserslautern)
Transfers out: Julian Schuster (retired), Marc Oliver Kempf (Stuttgart), Georg Nierdermeier (Melbourne Victory), Fabian Schleusener (SV Sandhausen, loan), Mats Møller Dæhli (FC St. Pauli), Rafal Gikiewicz (Union Berlin), Jonas Fohrenbach (SSV Jahn Regensburg¸ loan), Aleksandar Ignjovski (1. FC Magdeburg), Mohamed Dräger (SC Paderborn 07, loan), Karim Guédé (Sandhausen), Lucas Hufnagel (SpVgg Unterhaching), Vincent Sierro (FC St. Gallen, loan), Patric Klandt (Nürnberg), Jonas Meffert (Kiel), Caglar Söyüncü (Leicester City)
After surprisingly qualifying for Europe in their first season back in the Bundesliga, last season was always going to see a drop-off, especially after losing several key players. In the end they did well to stay up, finishing just above the relegation play-off place, with the goals of Nils Petersen crucial for maintaining their Bundesliga status.
There was never any question of replacing Streich, a cult favourite and the longest-serving coach in the league. It is easy to see last season as a hangover from the one before, and with some canny new recruits brought in over the summer to freshen up the team, they will be confident of being closer to mid-table security this time around.
To do so though, they have to tighten up at the back, and handle the departures of Kempf and Söyüncü at the same time. They cannot depend entirely on the goals of Petersen, with Waldschmidt, Janik Haberer and the fit-again Florian Niederlechner needed to take their share of the responsibility. If they fail in those key goals, as well as rectifying their awful away form, they could very easily drop out of the league again.
VfL Wolfsburg
Last season: 16th (won play-off)
Manager: Bruno Labbadia
Pre-season friendlies: Veltins-Auswahl (8-1 W), KSV Baunatal (7-0 W), Lupo Martini Wolfsburg (3-0 W), Norwich (1-1 D), Lyon (2-1 L), AFC Ajax (3-0 W), Napoli (3-1 W)
DFB-Pokal First Round: 1-0 win vs SV Elversberg
Opening game: Home to Schalke (25 August)
Transfers in: Marcel Tisserand (Ingolstadt), Klaus (Hannover), Pavao Pervan (LASK Linz), Wout Weghorst (AZ Alkmaar), Daniel Ginczek (Stuttgart), Jérôme Roussillon (HSC Montpellier)
Transfers out: Max Grün (released), Daniel Didavi (Stuttgart), Landry Dimata (RSC Anderlecht, loan), Victor Osimhen (Charleroi, loan)
With Hamburg out of the way, Wolfsburg are in prime position to become the league’s biggest perpetual crisis club. It is still only three years since they finished second and won the DFB-Pokal, two since pushing Real Madrid all the way in an UEFA Champions League quarter-final, but they finished the last campaign facing a play-off for their Bundesliga survival for a second year in a row.
Labbadia guided them to victory against Kiel, but beforehand he hadn’t been much more effective than Andries Jonker or Martin Schmidt before him. Above him, Jörg Schmadtke and club legend Marcel Schäfer have been installed in administrative roles, and between the three of them it will be interesting to see if things will be any different this year.
Excluding Tiseerand, who are already been on loan, Ginczek is the only new signing that isn’t an unknown quantity in German football, and they will be hoping he will give them the goalscorer they so desperately lacked last season, even before Mario Gómez left, despite his injury problems and modest recent record. Others, most significantly Maximilian Arnold, will know more is expected of them as well. Will they avoid the bottom three this year? Possibly, but not many are convinced.
Fortuna Düsseldorf
Last season: 1st (2. Bundesliga)
Manager: Friedhelm Funkel
Pre-season friendlies: Sportfreunde Eisbachtal (9-1 W), VfB Wissen (10-0 W), TSV Meerbusch (9-0 W), FC Wegberg-Beeck (5-0 W), Watford (3-1 L), Al-Hilal (2-0 W), Fiorentina (1-1 D), FC Remscheid (8-0 W), NEC (3-0 W), VfL Benrath 06 (13-0 W)
DFB-Pokal First Round: 5-0 win vs TuS Rot-Weiss Koblenz
Opening game: Home to Augsburg (25 August)
Transfers in: Benito Raman (Standard Liège), Alfredo Morales (Ingolstadt), Jean Zimmer (Stuttgart), Karaman (Hannover), Diego Contento (Girondins de Bordeaux), Kevin Stöger (Bochum), Aymen Barkok (Frankfurt, loan), Marvin Ducksch (St. Pauli), Davor Lovren (Dinamo Zagreb II), Matthias Zimmermann (Stuttgart), Dodi Lukebaki (Watford, loan), Takashi Usami (Augsburg, loan)
Transfers out: Kemal Rüzgar (Altinordu), Jerome Kiesewetter (released), Julian Schauerte (KAS Eupen), Axel Bellinghausen (retired), Lukas Schmitz (Wolfsberger AC), Marlon Ritter (Paderborn), Emmanuel Iyoha (Aue, loan), Justin Toshiki Kinjo (Thespakusatsu Gunma)
Not many people were tipping Düsseldorf for promotion last season but Funkel and his team got the balance right as, along with fellow Bundesliga newcomers Nürnberg, they proved to be one of the best and most consistent teams in the league to return to the top flight after five years away. They won the second-tier title in dramatic fashion though, beating Der Club in the final day showing with a stoppage time goal from Kaan Ayhan.
It is little secret that they are operating with one of the smallest budgets in the league but they have strengthened their side smartly. Raman, Zimmer and Lovren have now signed permanently after loan spells last year, whilst Usami is back for another. They have signed some of the best performers in the 2. Liga last year in Stöger and Ducksch, the league’s top scorer whilst on loan with Kiel. Lukebaki looks a promising performer for them as well.
Do they have enough to survive though? They certainly have flair, and a strong team spirit, and often the latter can be enough. Most sides who survive in their first season in the Bundesliga are those that bounced back within a year or two, and it will be a big step up for side without huge amounts of Bundesliga experience. Düsseldorf look as likely as anyone to go down, but they have the talent to avoid that fate.
1. FC Nürnberg
Last season: 2nd (2. Bundesliga)
Manager: Michael Köllner
Pre-season friendlies: FSV Erlangen-Bruck (5-2 W), SV Seligenporten (3-0 W), Halle (2-1 L), Regionalauswahl (4-0 W), Würzburg (4-0 W), TSV 1860 Rosenheim (4-1 W), Bologna (1-0 L), Real Valladolid (1-0 W)
DFB-Pokal First Round: 2-1 win vs SV Linx
Opening game: Away at Hertha (25 August)
Transfers in: Törles Knöll (Hamburg II), Kevin Goden (Köln U19), Christian Mathenia (Hamburg), Timothy Tillmann (Bayern II, loan), Bauer (Bremen, loan), Klandt (Freiburg), Yuya Kubo (KAA Gent, loan)
Transfers out: Möhwald (Bremen), Laszlo Sepsi (released), Miso Brecko (released), Enis Alushi (released), Thorsten Kirschbaum (Leverkusen)
Nürnberg are back in the Bundesliga, again. Germany’s ultimate yo-yo club are back after a four-year spell in the second tier for a ninth separate spell in the top flight. They suffered the usual blip after losing the Relegation play-off with Frankfurt two years ago, but after Köllner came into ensure they avoided going the other way, he proved to be the man to lead them back to the promise land as they finished second in his first full season in charge.
Unsurprisingly, many are tipping them to suffer a record ninth relegation, and there does seem to be doubt over whether they are equipped well enough to survive, especially as they are not financially strong enough to have been able to make any high-profile signings. Mathenia and Bauer do add some Bundesliga experience though, whilst Ond?ej Petrák is the sole survivor from the 2013-14 relegation season.
Most of the squad have been solid performers in the 2. Bundesliga, and if Enrico Valentini can prove as effective on the wing, Mikael Ishak can rediscover the scoring form he had before getting injured in February and the entire squad can prove to be greater than the sum of the parts, they’ll have every chance of staying up. It’s likely to be an almighty scrap, however.

This week in Spurs 15th-22nd September
Swansea review
Spurs’ disappointing Premier League form at Wembley continued as Spurs came away from Saturday with a 0-0 draw. Safe to say that Swansea goalkeeper and ex Arsenal stopper, Lukasz Fabianski had a very good game against the Lilywhites as he produced ten saves in this game. Pochettino’s woes were furthered by the fact that Spurs took 26 shots at Swansea’s goal with no end result. It was also fairly evident that Swansea were basically playing for a draw as Spurs dominated possession having a total of 74.9%, but as we know possession doesn’t always win games. Looking at Leicester’s average possession during the 2015/16 season, Ranieri’s side won the league with an average possession % of 47%. This metric was further supported by Tottenham’s win prior to the game vs Borussia Dortmund, where the Lilywhites won 3-1 with only 32% possession.
A very apparent absentee for the Swansea match was Serge Aurier who was extremely impressive against Dortmund on the prior Wednesday. Aurier’s impressive defensive contribution and ability to “Serge” up and down the flank is a sight I’m sure we can expect to see more of this season. It’s apparent that Aurier may not have been up to full fitness after the Dortmund game as he was rotated for Trippier on Saturday as Spurs’ hectic fixture list continued with another four games to play in the next two weeks. Without procrastinating much more and despite it being very early to make a statement like this, Aurier seems much more suited to the right wing back spot than Kieran Trippier as he is a better player defensively and is still good going forward despite Trippier’s solid crossing ability. In the coming weeks and month I expect to see Aurier become first choice.
Somewhat bizarrely, Pochettino opted to play Heung Min-Son at the left wing back role for the first time since the 4-2 loss to Chelsea in the FA Cup Semi Final. There is no doubt that Sonny is an extremely talented player but is extremely inconsistent talent. Son’s usual position is as a left winger which is where he mostly played at Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen although he was known to play on the right and sometimes as a striker. Danny Rose is still injured and likely won’t play for Spurs again due to his comments in the summer, Ben Davies was rotated for this game meaning that the other full back at Spurs being, Kyle Walker-Peters was left out. The young full back proved at the England under 20 World Cup in the summer, that he is very capable of occupying either flank as he played largely on the left side as Everton’s Mason Holgate occupied the right flank and both players put in good performances throughout the tournament and should’ve been a reason to at least include him on the bench vs Swansea.
In typical Premier League pundit style, big talking points were the numerous penalty shouts that went against Spurs that were missed by Mike Dean who again refereed a Spurs game who has been jokingly labeled a Spurs fan. The first came from a cross which came off of Martin Olsson’s arm which was overlooked by Mike Dean despite not tucking his arm in or flailing it around so this was a hard call to make so Dean could be given the benefit of the doubt. The 2nd was a clearer push to the back of Serge Aurier deep into the 2nd half and was definitely a penalty with the benefit of replay but seemingly cost Spurs the three point.
Barnsley review
Ultimately not a whole lot of talking points from Tuesday’s 1-0 win vs Barnsley in the Carabao cup as the game was relatively uneventful other than Dele’s goal. Although, Juan Foyth and Fernando Llorente did make their full senior debuts. Foyth looks a very confident player on the ball in a similar mould to our own Toby Alderweireld. Despite having a few shaky moments, the young Argentinian is certainly an exciting prospect for the future. As most fans expected, Pochettino played a second string team with the exception of Dele, Sonny, Trippier and super Jan, giving most first team players a break before the West Ham derby on Saturday. Honestly this seems like Spurs are in the best position they’ve been in for a while in terms of squad depth as it only really feels like Spurs are lacking another creative number 10 as a back up to Christian Eriksen.
The game saw a crowd of roughly 26,000 Spurs fans at Wembley and they only had to celebrate a 2nd half winner scored by Dele tapping in a goal inside the six yard box. Dele seems to have regained a bit of form despite all the rumours surrounding his agent situation as he currently is without an agent with superagents, Mino Raiola and Jorge Mendes circling the 21 year old to potentially get him a bumper wage deal at Spurs or a potential deal away in the coming years.
The Barnsley match also saw GK N-Koudou made his return from injury, as he made a brief substitute appearance. The young, French winger really needs a run of games this season as he made very few appearances last season and his pace is something that Spurs do lack late on in the game if Son starts. Here’s hoping that GK has a better season this year.
Talking tactics
Spurs have been lining up in 343 and 4231 in the past two games as they have done for the past 2 seasons and they are formations that transition between each other very nicely as Eric Dier or Victor Wanyama would typically start as a holding midfielder but were able to transition into a half back/sweeper role. When Spurs start in 343 this season they typically start with Davinson Sanchez so they typically stay in a 3 at the back system while the midfield can adapt into a diamond formation as of late. 352 is a system that could potentially benefit Spurs as Son would be an extremely useful 2nd striker as he has played at striker at Hamburg and Leverkusen on the odd occasion. The South-Korean’s skill set would be very beneficial in the second striker role as his lightning fast pace, solid dribbling ability and impressive, if inconsistent, finishing ability. Spurs wing-back situation is also benefitted in the 3 at the back formations as Kyle Walker-Peters is an extremely useful being able to play on either flank and his pace is an asset that really can benefit when Davies is rotated as Son is wasted whenever he is deployed at Left wing-back.
West Ham preview
West Ham started the season in torrid form but have started to pick up some form after getting a goalless draw vs West Brom at The Hawthorns. The hammers then went on to batter Premier League new boys, Huddersfield, 3-0 so they are in better home form than Spurs at the moment. Spurs’ away form this year has started off better than it did last year as Spurs have picked up 6 points out of a possible 6 with a 2-0 win away to Newcastle and a 3-0 thrashing at Goodison park vs Ronald Koeman’s Everton. This game should be a game that Spurs win but after losing last year it will still be a complicated game. My prediction is a 2-1 Spurs win.
