On fandom, shipping and boundaries

Since I have seen a lot of talk about boundaries and shipping over the last couple days, and because that has led to me doing a lot of thinking on it/ I just wanted to share my few cents on the topic.

For those who haven’t seen me talk about this before I should probably mention that I’ve been in fandom for over ten years and in RPF spaces for six years now. So that’s the background that informs my opinions.

So let’s get into this.

Most of the arguments I see center around the opinion that we as fans need consent from content creators to essentially do anything in fandom. Which is right where it starts for me to be honest.

Fandom is and has always been a subculture where fans of a thing meet and exchange their ideas and create art and fic and all sorts of other transformative works for each other. Emphasis on “for each other”.

As a fan I am in fandom spaces to talk to other people who like the same things I do, and I am in fandom spaces to share with other fans what I create based on the things we like (fanfic in my personal case).

Over the past ten years I have watched the increasing shift towards where fandom is more out in the open, and where fans apparently feel like they can and should approach creators with the things they used to share in fandom circles. Obviously some creators have made it clear that they don’t have a problem with that, have actively encouraged it, or admitted to seeking it out to some extend. I think the most famous example for this is probably Bryan Fuller and his enthusiasm about Hannibal fandom in general and Hannigram fanworks in particular, or Mads Mikkelsen, who to my knowledge has publicly admitted to reading (and liking) explicit Hannigram fic. They made that decision for themselves and I think that’s great for them.

Now here’s also the heart of the issue for me. Because I am a very strong believer in the fourth wall, meaning that there is fandom and then there is the spaces where we get to interact with the creators (cons, more recently social media accounts), and yes, sometimes those things intersect, but that does not mean the fourth wall is and should be disregarded.

Shipping especially (since that’s the reason I am writing this post) is a subset of fandom. Not everyone in fandom ships; not everyone in fandom wants to ship. And that’s completely fine. We’re all here to have fun and we all look for different things from what we do in fandom. But at no point does that entitle any of us to demand others to cater to what we personally want from fandom. And at no point does any of this mean we should feel like we have to ask for permission to do the things we do.

Fandom is not just transformative, it is transgressive. Modern fandom, especially modern slash fandom got popularised by women writing queer content about Star Trek in the 1970s (the first published slash story was published in a zine in 1974). And yes, there are cases where I would argue for being publicly transgressive, but I do not think that this should apply to fandom, and being transgressive means that I can and will do things without regard to what any creator wants me to do.

And this is where we go back to the fourth wall and the question of boundaries. I have seen a trend in Hermitcraft fandom specifically where people approach content creators to ask them what their boundaries are and compile lists of who is fine with what. And that in itself crosses a boundary for me.

See one of the most important things I learned in fandom in general, and in Hockey RPF specifically is that the fourth wall is one of the most important boundaries we have in fandom. Shipping is for us. Not for the creators or the professionals involved. And I will be honest with you, none of the shippers I know in Hermitcraft fandom actively share their shippy stuff with creators. In fact, a lot of them feel uncomfortable at the mere suggestion that any of the Hermits could read or see their shipping content.

Asking the Hermits (and other content creators) what they think about shipping and whether they are okay with it is crossing that boundary, and in my personal opinion it shows a disregard for the content creators these “fans” presumably care about. If you actually want to respect them, just keep that stuff away from them. They are adults, if they happen to find it they can decide to ignore it. And if they decide not to ignore it then that is their own decision. A decision they can make for themselves, because once again, they are adults.

But people will use even ambiguous statements or non-statements and twist them to mean what they think they should mean and then go and harass people who kept this content to their own circles and sharing it with others who want to see it and try to tell them what they can and cannot do. They will tell you “I don’t speak for them” and then tell you that the only way to read a statement is their way. The moment you take an ambiguous statement or a statement that has never been made and say "this means that" without letting the person in question clarify, you are attempting to speak for them. And no, this does not mean I want people to ask the Hermits for clarification. I want people to not bring this up with the Hermits at all

And I have seen the concept of consent being brought up in this context and I am just going to say it: The concept of consent does not apply here.

The concept of consent as used by anti-shippers and yes, also shippers insistent on respecting these boundaries, whether they are correctly interpreted or not, is the concept of consent we apply to s*xual encounters. And that concept does not apply here. At all.

Consent as applied to s*xual encounters is a legal tool used to determine whether an encounter was unconsensual and thus breaking the law, or not.

I have seen an analogy being thrown around where creating shipping content without being told by the person you create it about that they are okay with it is the same as walking up to a stranger and holding their hand without asking if they are okay with it.

This analogy is false.

A more fitting analogy would be this: You see a stranger and you would like to hold their hand. You walk up to them to ask if you can, potentially making them feel uncomfortable. This is what people asking Hermits about whether they are okay with shipping are doing.

Or you could quietly draw art of yourself holding the stranger's hands or write about it, and not show it to them, meaning they will never know, which has literally no effect on them whatsoever. This is what shippers are already doing.

We all have fantasies. It's human to have fantasies. There is nothing wrong with that. The moment this becomes an issue is when we ignore the boundaries of the objects of our fantasies and tell them about them unsolicited.

Another thing I want to make abundantly clear here is the following: The Hermits are not your friends.

They may be accessible online and they may even talk to fans online, but they are not our friends. We know as much as they are willing to share publicly. Nothing more and nothing less. What we know about and of them is a public persona. And yes, that persona may or may not include aspects of their real personalities, but at the end of the day they are effectively strangers.

Accessibility online does not mean we are entitled to cross boundaries we would not cross in real life either. And someone talking to you about something unrelated does not make you entitled to ask them frankly invasive questions about things they might not have encountered or put much thought into without you asking those questions.

Furthermore, I would like us all to remember what happened when ZombieCleo came out and told anti-shippers that they should stop harassing shippers. This fandom has a history and considering that history, I am not surprised when Hermits give ambiguous statements or try to avoid saying anything, even ignoring for a moment that it's invasive. If I had witnessed people bully my friend and that same community is now asking me to state my opinion on the same issue I would think twice about how to reply. Especially if I rely on that same community for part of my income.

b/c i was convo’ing about it with @meddyllnat​​ on twitter, i think that sometimes it can be hard to tell (from the reader side, or from the new writer side) what normal engagement looks like on ao3. this is based on my experience as an “average” fic writer across a handful of fandoms; no doubt other writers will have different experiences!

my ao3 fic stats screenshots and discussion thereof under the cut.

first, if you didn’t know: authors have access to a statistics panel, which gives us a basic rundown of hits, kudos, subscriptions, bookmarks, and comment threads on our fic. it’s pretty bare bones, but it’s a nice overview, and it can be drilled down by year or by fic.

by default, we get a daily aggregate email with new kudos, and separate emails for new comments. we don’t get any notification for bookmarks or subscriptions, and while we can see private bookmark totals we don’t see who created them. ditto subscriptions: we see a total count (on works, series, and on our author account) but not the subscriber. if you leave notes in a public bookmark, we only see it if we go click through the bookmarks the same way as anyone else.

i’m not a particularly popular writer, so my stats tend to be average. (at least, that’s my assumption!) the most popular fic i ever wrote was for john wick, and i wrote it verrrry slowly over a period of (mumble) two years due to some pretty big life upheavals. it’s a ten chapter work, with the first chapter published a few months after the second movie came out, and the last chapter published right before the third movie dropped, so i got a built-in bump there. i’m not “active” in that fandom (idek if there is an actual fandom there) but i had one fic i wanted to write so i did. anyway, the stats for it look like this:

meanwhile, my hockey rpf stats look like this:

unstraightening is the most popular, probably because it had a few things going for it: (a) written for a fic fest, (b) written in the fall off-season where we were all riding high between playoffs and hockey restarting, (c) while it’s for a rarepair, has a secondary not-rarepair to draw hits, (d) non-challenging content/feel-good storyline, (e) i put a lot more care into writing it than i did for say, covalence, where i had an idea i wanted to get out but i wasn’t interested in spending a lot of time refining it. if you contrast that with some of the other fics (situational dub-con! mostly sexual! first fic in the ship tag!) it’s pretty obvious why the stats shake out how they have. 

hopping fandoms, my omgcp list looks like this (and yes, i am still finishing second-hand emotion i promise lol): 

again, as expected. afterthoughts is the most popular by a mile. quarter-life closure is a weirder, darker fic than afterthoughts: it gives neither of the two fandom megapairings a happy ending and ends “unhappily”, so i am thoroughly unsurprised by the difference there. i’m honestly amazed as many people kudos’d all to the ground as they did (thank you!) since it’s a one-scene sketch. 

just to finish the list, though the rest of this stuff is all pretty niche:

the hits/kudos ratio on duly and indelibly is my worst by far, but (a) i think that’s typical for that fandom, and (b) it was a treat for an exchange, and the recip seems to have liked it, so i do not care. it was also my first foray into writing f/f in a long while.

overall thoughts: i generally like to see a ~10:1 hits to kudos ratio, regardless of fandom or overall numbers. sometimes i hit it, sometimes not. c’est la vie. other than that, i don’t sweat these stats too much, though obviously it’s always nice to see them go up. :) and of course getting a comment from someone “got” what i was trying to convey with a fic is always extremely nice. i recently (in the past week) got a comment like that on a reasonable amount of trouble, and it made my day.

Dark Fic? There’s a fourth wall in RPF, or the appearance of one. Meaning that we as writers and readers are using familiar faces, assumed personality traits, and a familiar structure to set the scene. But none of what we write and read is real because we are not those people, we are not friends or acquaintances with those people and everything is generally fiction. Some details may be true like timelines, trades, but the characters are not? So a dub-con, heat, breeding, winners room, non-con fic is dark yes, but not real.

When we cross that fourth wall it creates a problem. IE: Sending the people written about in the story the fic, believing that the fiction is describing how the person is in life, using real events to write speculative fiction, or taking actual steps to recreate a dark fic, or even harassing the real life people over fictional relationships etc. There are a few fics on hockey rpf that explicitly and realistically get into rape (I can think of two that were 😬😬 ) and those cut very close to that line for me, personally, where the event could happen in real life and that’s upsetting, it feels more speculative than fiction? I usually don’t read those and I don’t write those. Basically, it’s fiction and not real until you bring it beyond the wall. I don’t see myself not reading dark fic, and I don’t see myself not writing dark fic. But most of what I read/write is deeply fictional ABO/winners room/dynamic/forfeit/tentacle, which doesn’t exist in real life and makes it easier to compartmentalize.

Oh yes. Respecting the fourth wall is THE most important form of respect in the rpf world. Thank you for mentioning it.

Hmm. I'm starting to suspect that I'm in the minority in letting irl news problematize (is that a word?) or interfere with my relationship to fic. Might it have something to do with my own fic preferences? I prefer close to real world fic or realistic AUs, and sex based on realistic human bodies.

Fanfic has been my go to for entertainment since middle school (upwards of a decade) and I had my start reading about wholly fictional characters as most fannish people do.

Over the past few years I’ve come to read mostly Hockey Player RPF because the players, as is true for many other sports, are constantly in an emotionally charged environment which lends itself to interesting potential storylines.

As has been mentioned previously, as long as we as participants in fandom stay in our lane and don’t let our characterisations impact the lives of the people we write about or our judgements about them as real people, we aren’t causing them any harm, and if we aren’t causing harm then what we’re doing is not inherently bad.

There are reasons RPF in particular is an attractive source for inspiration, and while I often see discussions of the cons of this genre, I rarely ever hear people address why they enjoy reading and writing about real people. Writing about someone who exists in the real world can be great if you have trouble constructing characterisation from nothing. Indeed many fictional characters are inspired by real people in the first place. I personally find it easier to put myself in the shoes of someone I know exists for real than I do imagining an entire backstory of someone who does not. It’s easier for me to imagine the history and motivations of someone real and to write about them than it is to do the same for a someone who exists only as a concept.

RPF also holds appeal because the source inspiration does not have a finale date, there will always be new content to draw from. The person inspiring the character has experiences and interactions with the world that often differ to the way a character in a crime drama or fantasy novel would and this can lead to fresh takes on a storyline which otherwise often sees more cliche representation.

In sports RPF specifically there’s always a new conflict to write about, new challenges for the characters to face, aspects of the human condition to explore. The sense of continuity I get from it is a constant source of excitement.

I love how reading RPF gives me new insight to characters who progress and face real life issues that are often written in a way that is so steeped in cliches and tropes to the point that I can no longer relate.

TLDR: RPF feels fresh and lively and the way I relate to representations of real people feels different to the way I relate to wholly fictional characters and you’ll never run out of source material to draw from.

It sucks when you enjoy something that other people make you feel terrible about. It used to be true of fanfiction as a whole, but now that the genre is getting a bit more respect it seems like subsets of fic are still getting that same hate. 

If it’s something you love to do (and from your ask, it sounds like it really is) then I’d hate for you to give that up. We all need bright spots in our lives to get us through the day. These days, mine is roleplaying fictional characters with my best friend. Yours is writing RPF. I think you have healthy boundaries in place, and you know what you are and aren’t comfortable doing. 

If you can’t talk to your usual friends about it, try to find a community amongst the other RPF writers in your fandom - or even in other fandoms. There might be a discord server you could hop on or a subreddit you could subscribe to. Feeling alone just makes anxieties worse. Try to find someone you’re comfortable talking to. ❤

In reading - fanfic in general. In writing - DEFINITELY dolled up Sebastian Aho. I have no excuse for writing him in black thigh-high stockings, high heels and red lipstick in so many of my aho fics except that you gotta use those legs and that pretty little face, man.

K: What’s the angstiest idea you’ve ever come up with?

It’s football rpf, Ben Woodburn/Gareth Bale/Wales NT ensemble, dubcon/non-con, underage, all that crap. I came up with it last fall, after Woodburn had scored in a world cup qualifier against Austria as the youngest ever in Wales NT, and Bale said “We won’t let him sleep tonight.”

In my mind it collided nicely with the monthly prompt challenge that month, there was stuff like held down -kink, huddle for warmth -trope prompt and a thunderstorm photo prompt.

The idea was that the celebration had gone a bit too wild and sexual acts had been performed on the youngster, and he would be quite remorseful and repulsed and angsty about it the day after, not sure if his consent was asked and if he liked it. Bale finds him crying and on the verge of throwing up, soaked wet on an empty practice football field, hears him out, owns up his part of the situation and says if Ben feels what has happened is statutory rape / other violation and he wants to sue, he should, although the FA will make it hard.

But I knew I wouldn’t have time to write it within the challenge month and wasn’t motivated enough to push it through without it.

My reverse power dynamics daddy kink fic that ended up to be a part of my Wardo/Seabass series Sour grapes, Brut Rosé, was close to become a Ovi/Burky fic. Most of it would have fitted them just as well because André can be just that kind of a brat, but I had seen a wine-making video of Cam where he opened a champagne bottle with a sword and I just wanted to use it in a fic. Maybe I still should write it as a kind of a self-remix, idk.

This last year I had the pleasure of partaking in so many wonderful birthday bingos for so many wonderful people in our community! They were by far some of the most fun I had as a writer and I wanted to take this opportunity to steal that very idea from every single one of those lovely people.
