Over the few months that we’ve been studying visual musicianship I have learnt new skills like recording audio alongside video in logic as well as learning the importance of having a basic knowledge of video in music. It allows your audience to visualise what you are doing, how you make the music and it can even enhance the music. There are several musicians that have made a profession on youtube by using music and video.
For the assignment I was intent on making a music video that I could use in the real world as well as for an assignment. I wanted to make something that showed who I was and somewhat reflected my life. I was inspired by a handful of music videos including ‘Easy Easy’ by King Krule, ‘Love$ick’ by Mura Masa ‘Sunrise’ by Slaptop and ‘Doing Good’ by Milky Chance. All of these videos show friendship and how integral it can be to having a good and happy life. I then looked at rap videos, as that was the genre my song would be, like ‘Blue Suede’ by Vince Staples and ’95 till Infinity’ by Joey Bada$$. This displayed how MCs rap towards the camera in their videos while including shots of their friends and them living their day to day lives.
I used the easter holidays as my chance to record the video. I gathered up my friends, we had two DSLR cameras, a Nikon D3200 and a Canon EOS 1300D, as well as a couple phone cameras. Everyone who was there on the day had a chance to do some filming because 4+ minds are better than one and I think that paid off. We began by getting footage in my back garden and in a local park and then we went into central London together to capture more footage. I decided for us to do this because my house and local parks are places that me and my friends hang out a lot and every now and again we go into central London, get off at a random stop and just explore. I felt using these locations would best represent my life and my friends as well as the song which is about what I do, what I want to do and how important my friends are in my life.
Once I had all the footage I looked through it and deleted the files that weren’t usable or weren’t as good and noted down the best ones. After this I decided that I still didn’t have enough footage so I went out at night with a couple of my mates and I went out again the next day to a local park to capture more shots. When this was done I did the same process of deleting unwanted files. After a few days I came to the conclusion that I could’t wait to edit the footage at uni so instead I downloaded Final Cut Pro X to do my video as I am familiar with the software due to me using it in A levels for Media Studies.
First I dragged in the best clips that I had recorded, not all of them worked so my next strategy was finding the best clips for lines in the song. This was a lot more successful and the majority of the footage ended up falling into place because there were a lot of good shots that me and my friends captured. I found that cuts would be very effective in portraying the quick nature of the song especially considering the track itself is only one minute and twenty-six seconds. When I finally had a cohesive video for the song with no gaps I showed it to my friends who gave me a bit of advice on colour grading and replacing footage. I listened to their advice and made a few changes.
I showed my video to my lecturer and he gave me some more advice on colour grading. I made an attempt and I’m relatively happy about it but because I don’t have an extensive knowledge one video editing I couldn’t make something perfect. I’m happy with what I have done however I am very aware there is room for improvement. I’ve come away from this module happy that I can create a good video but I am certain that when releasing actual music videos in the future I will use someone who does that for a living.
