Viktor & Rolf | c. 2015 ・・・ Is fashion art, or is art fashion? That was the question Viktor & Rolf posed with their autumn/winter 2015–16 couture collection. Staged as a performance piece, the runway show featured a series of garments composed of painterly “canvases” affixed to hinged frames wrapped in fabric that suggests the appearance of gilt wood. Several designs were appliquéd with jacquard-woven images of Baroque and Rococo paintings from the Rijksmuseum’s in Amsterdam, including this dress adorned with fragmented portraits and embroidered and appliquéd “paint splatters.” As the presentation progressed, Viktor & Rolf removed select ensembles from the models and hung them like paintings on a wall. Since their debut in 1993, the designers have emphasized the consonance between art and fashion; with this collection they asserted that the boundary between the two remains fluid. I had such a great time in NYC thanks to Michael. He took me to the Met where I got to see the exhibit- Camp: Notes on Fashion, which I loved so much I went a little overboard in the gift shop. Here is a peek at my NYC haul. He took me to some his favorite neighborhood shops where Michael found me a yellow duck head umbrella, a vintage Vivian Westwood kerchief, and a vintage 80s yellow Polka dot blouse. Thanks for such an amazing short trip. I’ve never been full that many days in a row and I haven’t been to such massive vintage stores in a while. Jean Paul Gaultier | c. 1991 ・・・ Camp fashion would not exist with out queer culture and the adversity of life within it. The boom of gay gym culture was a direct result of the AIDs crisis. Many men began to pursue the idealized muscular physique. Not only did gyms provide a place for socialization after many queer oriented clubs were shutting down but displaying a gym-sculpted body wordlessly communicated a man was not (yet) afflicted with the disease. This, like many other cultural phenomena, carried over to fashion and the athleisure craze we have come to equate with the 80s. The physique one wished for is rendered three dimensionally of this Gaultier jersey jacket. The facile effect is that of seeing through clothing, but the super-effect is that of the idealizing fantasy. This trope is present for more than a decade in Gaultier's work.
