Dutch MQ-9 Reapers drones start surveillance operations on NATO's eastern flank
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 25/01/2024 - 14:00in Military, UAV - UAV
The Dutch Ministry of Defense announced the deployment of MQ-9 drones to strengthen NATO's surveillance capabilities along its eastern flank. The first two MQ-9 aircraft arrived in Romania two nights ago, with the final drone expected to arrive soon.
These unmanned vehicles will collect crucial information along the eastern NATO border, operating from the Romanian Air Base in Campia Turzii. These drones mark a significant step in the contribution of the Netherlands to NATO's security efforts.
Dutch military engineers are currently establishing a base camp on site to facilitate deployment. The control and operation of these unmanned aircraft will be carried out remotely from Vliegbasis Leeuwarden, in the Netherlands, where the collected data will also be processed.
The MQ-9 drones are prepared to conduct land and sea operations. This detachment not only improves the independent intelligence capabilities of the Netherlands, but also allows the sharing of critical information with NATO allies. This is particularly vital for the defense of the alliance's border areas.
Previously parked in Curaçao for training and anti-drug operations, these Reapers accumulated more than 2,800 hours of flight around the island. They have been instrumental in the preparation of Dutch Air Force personnel and have now been transported to Romania for their new mission.

The construction of the largest NATO base in Europe, Romania, begins at a cost of 2.5 billion euros
The base will have runways, hangars, weapons storage, fuel and lubricants, as well as training facilities, schools, kindergartens, shops and a hospital.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/18/2024 - 07:55 in Military
The construction of what is expected to be the largest NATO base in Europe, located in Romania, with a construction cost of 2.5 billion euros has begun.
The project will see the expansion of the 57ª Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base of the Romanian Air Force, covering an extensive area of 2,800 hectares with a perimeter of 30 kilometers. Once completed, the base should accommodate approximately 10,000 NATO soldiers along with their families, according to a report from the Euronews website. Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base currently houses approximately 5,000 employees from the U.S. and Romania.
Equipped with essential infrastructure, the base in Constance County is prepared to include runways, aircraft hangars, weapons storage and distribution facilities, fuel and lubricants, as well as training equipment, schools, kindergartens, shops and a hospital.
This new project follows previous improvements in air bases in Romania, with almost $300 million spent at Air Base 71, near Campia Turzii, in a training center in Cincu, and in Mihail Kogalniceanu.
Romania has become a strategic focal point for both the U.S. and NATO, as it seeks to strengthen the ability to carry out operations in the region. In addition to the fighters operating at Bases 71 and 75, the U.S. Air Force also routinely flies MQ-9 Reaper drones from Campia Turzii, providing greater surveillance capacity near Romania's border with Ukraine and the Black Sea.
In November, Romania opened the European F-16 Training Center (EFTC) at Gheorghe Mociornita Air Base in Fetesti. It is there that Ukrainian, Romanian and other NATO nations pilots will be trained to fly U.S. F-16 planes.
Dorin Popescu, a Romanian military and political analyst, said: “The Mihail Kogalniceanu base will become NATO's most important permanent military structure in the vicinity of the conflict in Ukraine. It is unlikely that this conflict will end this year, in 2025 or 2026. It is likely to be a long-term conflict."
Ukraine and NATO are prepared to establish the Joint NATO-Ukraine Center for Analysis, Training and Education (JATEC) in the Polish city of Bydgoszcz. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of this joint venture, stressing its importance both for Ukraine and for the alliance as a whole. Although the details about the operations of the center remain undisclosed, Stoltenberg highlighted its role in facilitating the exchange of experiences between member states.
Sweden has officially become the 32º member of the North Atlantic Alliance. The application for NATO membership was initiated by Sweden in 2022, after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, with most Member States quickly ratifying its accession. The challenges in obtaining the ratification of two countries, Turkey and Hungary, were eventually overcome, with Ankara changing its position after negotiations on its accession to the EU and the easing of US sanctions on sales of military technology.
The expansion of NATO also caused Finland to join the alliance, officially becoming the 31º member on April 4, 2023. Finland cited security concerns, especially due to its extensive border with Russia, which extends for more than 1,300 kilometers, as a key factor in its decision to join NATO. With the accession of Finland, the extension of the border of NATO member countries with Russia more than doubled, previously standing at 1,215 kilometers.
