Tips on Campervan Rental Needs in Japan
Are you an adventurous soul planning to explore the captivating landscapes and cultural marvels of Japan? If so, embarking on a campervan journey might just be the perfect way to experience this beautiful country up close and personal. Campervan rental in Japan offers the freedom to navigate scenic routes, hidden gems, and iconic landmarks at your own pace. To ensure a smooth and memorable road trip, here are some essential tips to consider when opting for campervan rental needs in Japan.
1. Early Planning and Booking
Securing your campervan rental well in advance is crucial, especially if you're planning to visit during peak travel seasons. Spring (cherry blossom season) and autumn (fall foliage season) are particularly busy times. Booking early not only guarantees you a wider selection of campervans but also helps you snag more competitive rental rates.
2. Choose the Right Campervan
Japan offers a variety of campervan options catering to different travel preferences. From compact camper vans to larger motorhomes, you'll find vehicles suitable for solo travelers, couples, families, and groups. Assess your needs and select a campervan that accommodates your group size comfortably and suits your budget.
3. Verify Driving License Requirements
Before hitting the road, ensure you possess a valid international driving permit (IDP) along with your home country's driving license. This permit is required by law for foreigners driving in Japan. Make sure to carry both documents with you at all times while driving.
4. Familiarize Yourself with Traffic Rules
Driving regulations and traffic rules may differ from what you're accustomed to. Study up on Japanese traffic rules and road signs to ensure a safe and smooth journey. For instance, in Japan, you drive on the left side of the road.
5. Plan Your Itinerary
Japan's diverse regions offer a plethora of attractions, from tranquil countryside scenes to bustling cityscapes. Draft a rough itinerary that highlights the places you want to visit, the routes you'll take, and the camping spots you'll stay at. Be flexible in case you come across unexpected gems along the way.
6. Camping Sites and Facilities
Research and identify the camping sites along your chosen route. While campervan-friendly sites are abundant in Japan, some may require reservations, especially during peak travel seasons. Look for sites that offer essential facilities such as clean toilets, showers, waste disposal, and water refilling stations.
7. Language Barrier
While English signage is common in urban areas, it's beneficial to learn a few basic Japanese phrases or carry a translation app. Communication might be a challenge in rural areas, so having some language tools can help you navigate and interact effectively.
8. Packing Essentials
Pack appropriately for your trip, considering the weather conditions and activities you plan to engage in. Don't forget essentials like bedding, cooking utensils, toiletries, clothing for different weather, and electronic adapters.
9. Fuel and Toll Costs
Japan's toll road system is efficient but can be expensive for long journeys. Budget for toll costs in your travel expenses. Additionally, fuel costs can vary, so research fuel stations along your route to ensure a smooth refueling process.
10. Respect Local Customs
Japanese culture places a strong emphasis on respect and etiquette. When camping in public areas, be sure to clean up after yourself and follow the rules set by the campsite. Dispose of trash responsibly and respect the quiet hours.
Embarking on a campervan adventure through Japan offers an unparalleled way to experience the country's natural beauty and cultural richness. With careful planning, choosing the right campervan, understanding driving regulations, and respecting local customs, your journey will be one of unforgettable exploration and discovery. Book your campervan rental early, prepare your route, and get ready to immerse yourself in the wonders of Japan from the comfort of your home on wheels. Whether it's the iconic cherry blossoms or the serene countryside, Japan's diverse landscapes await your discovery.

Cannot wait...
Still a month away from watching these two be their adorable goober selves together:
Tumblr media
I keep telling everyone around me I'm going to be insufferable for a while, with Jimin and Muse coming soon and then these two together, week after week ... makes me giddy. Sorry, not sorry.
We'll get teasers. I'm going to squee over all of those as well. Again, sorry, but not very sorry at all actually.
All of it takes me back to when I realized JK's 2022 Vlog was going to be centered around camping. Honestly? I was a little surprised. He has never come across as the outdoorsy type to me. But he'd never had the chance to express much of what interests him outside of BTS and outside of what we saw on various content through the years either!
This series of vlogs helped us see each member doing things they chose to do on their own and helped kick off the "solo" era in 2022.
Tumblr media
Jungkook's delight in stopping at Korea's version of Buc-ee's and buying gas station food and eating to his heart's content was oddly satisfying. Maybe because I take great pleasure in doing such simple things too, after all, the best part of a road trip is stopping to buy snacks along the way, am I right? The service area where they stopped is called the Gapyeong Service area on the Seoul-Yangyang Expressway (60). These places are like a food court/mini mall. Just like Buc-ee's.
Tumblr media
I am already laughing at the thought of he and Jimin stopping at a grocery store to buy deli pizza in Connecticut... IT'S GOING TO BE WOEFULLY SUBSTANDARD I FEAR!
In his 2022 vlog, Jungkook helped set up the camper he slept in and cooked and sat around the campfire drinking. And we know in past Bon Voyage seasons and other content, they've pitched tents and slept outdoors. All of these things he must have immensely enjoyed if we might be seeing them again soon with Jimin.
Then there's the recent story going around about someone spotting he and Jimin returning their rental car in Japan and learning Jungkook was driving... Jungkook got to drive on the "wrong" side of the road in Japan! He put that international driver's license to use finally!
From the preview clip the other day, it appears Jungkook also got to practice his motorcycle handling skills. Handling a Harley Davidson is a bit trickier than handling a smaller motorcycle. Those things are heavy. And it's a little different when you have a passenger sitting behind you. The two Harley helmets we saw sitting on the edge of his sofa last year... yep, he's had practice.
TMI: I was today year's old when I learned that motorcycles are banned on major roadways in Korea.
Are we going to see how Jimin scraped his knuckles while snorkeling on Jeju?
Tumblr media
And that nekkid-in-bed live when Jungkook was begging him to come over and Jimin told him to look at the photo he sent... did Jimin get a black eye from being elbowed when they were sleeping?
And as I was running through my blog posts, I realized all of these things I previously said last year:
Me wondering if their trip to Japan was unstructured and spur of the moment...
I wondered if Closer Than This was a pre-release to an upcoming album...
I'm thankful to Tae for bringing JK along with his Wooga friends to that ski resort back in 2022. We can't know if JK had ever snowboarded before that but it appears he loved it enough to want to stick around long after they left him there. And now he had the chance to do it again with Jimin! I know they had so much fun together. At the beginning of this year, I pointed out some fun facts about Sapporo...
Skiing? Snowboarding? All of the above?
And save this for future reference, it's the onsen resort image we heard about and I mentioned in a weekly Bangtan report this past February....
Tumblr media
Maybe none of the above will be accurate, but thinking about how much fun they had anyway has me very excited for August 8.

TOILET SIDECARS.....DERRIERE POWER WASHING
Paper shortages return. Second time in recent years. Especially toilet paper and paper towels. Some supermarket shelves totally empty. Some partially. Shortages expected to be a disaster by Christmas.
Paper towels we can do without. Toilet paper another story. A “necessity.”
There is a replacement/substitute however. The bidet.
Jokingly referred to as the “toilet sidecar” and “derriere power washing.”
The bidet came first. Historically in use prior to toilet paper. Prior to either, one’s cleanliness depended on leaves and sticks.
The advent of toilet paper was introduced as a “luxury.” As well as a necessity, it continues to be considered such. In each paper shortage, there has been “panicked toilet paper hoarding.”
COVID-19 has spurred recent shortages.
The shortage problem has been partially solved with the U.S. discovery of bidets. Bidet sales have boomed this past year.
Bidets are perfect for cleansing the nether regions with a gentle jet of water. Its powers considered vastly superior to toilet paper.
Bidets have been popular outside the U.S. for years. Bidets are called “Toto Washlet” in Japan. Eighty percent of Japanese homes are equipped with bidets. In 1975, Italy mandated their presence in every home.
Their slow U.S. growth has been moved along in the past year because of the pandemic. Two type bidets are in popular use. One is an actual toilet appearing structure, minus a seat, which sits next to the toilet in a bathroom. The other a “bidet attachment.”
The attachment has received rapid acceptance this past year. Probably due to cost. $39.95. The attachment is attached to the bottom of the toilet seat. Connected to a water supply by a simple attachment beneath the toilet itself.
Cheap to purchase. Simple to attach. Easy to use.
Bidets actually pre-date modern rolled up toilet paper. Rolled toilet paper was patented in 1891. Bidet roots go back to the 17th or early 18th century in France.
Various designs were in use which led to today’s model.
Bidets grew in popularity prior to World War II in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and South America. Not in the U.S., however.
Initial bidets were wood constructed. Sat along side toilets. They were faucet fillable sidecars in effect. Water was run into the bidet. Hands required to wash the backside.
As models advanced, nozzles were added that applied a light spritz of water, thereby eliminating hand washing.
The U.S. was not impressed. The primary issue was size. A bidet is almost the size of another toilet.
Many Americans viewed the bidets as symbols of French indecency. Bidets had become popular in French whore houses for use by the ladies for cleansing purposes and birth control.
Bidets are hygienic. Cleansing with water rather than paper more logical.
Following the water spray, a hand towel can be used for drying. Not cleansing. The cleansing already accomplished by the water spray.
U.S. citizens find it difficult to adapt to change. They are not fans of change. Sometimes such can be a “bummer.”
My personal experience with bidets has been extensive. The first home I purchased in Key West I lived in for 23 years. The master bathroom came equipped with a bidet. I used it. Found it to be absolutely the best for cleansing! Better than toilet paper!
I presently live in a rental. Four years. No bidet the first 3 years. Relegated to toilet paper again.  I was not a happy camper.
Last year, I came across the $39.95 attachment on the internet. Purchased it.
Happiness returned!
Enjoy your day!

All the Tiny Spaces Belong to Japan!
Tumblr media
While the Japanese have been stereotyped as an overworked, falling-asleep-on-their-feet kind of people, what they’ve actually built is a way to coexist with each other while maintaining the efficiency of Japan’s modern cities. Downsizing dwellings has been the name of the game and it is now becoming increasingly common in places like Tokyo for adults (and sometimes even small families) to live in residential units that measure just 9.46 square meters or even less. The miniaturized dwellings may not be for the claustrophobic, but they are cheaper to rent and they provide the essentials of what you need: a place to sleep, and a place for all your stuff. The channel Living Big in a Tiny House sums up how you can “live big” despite having limited dwelling space. You organize your stuff well enough, you don’t buy stuff you don’t need, and you perfect creating just the right spaces for the things that you need to do. The resident in the episode above is from Australia and she’s still pretty happy despite the drastic shift from a regular-sized dwelling to a miniaturized one that just contains the essentials. Japan has long practiced downsizing of houses because of the soaring cost of real estate, and as you may already know, not everyone can shell out millions of yen to buy a house. So tiny house living was a logical option, and the current trend now is for small rental units to be small, but compensating with height as many of them have lofts. This tiny home in the heart of Tokyo is the size of a garage, and a couple lives in it. It has all of the modern amenities that one could ask for, albeit in a very downsized fashion. It was designed like a traditional Japanese home, with a shoe-changing area when you enter the vestibule. A massive French window allows natural light to stream in, illuminating the central spaces of the house. The French window also gives the tiny home the illusion of additional space by “merging the outside” with what is inside. By putting a large window that faces the street, the small house feels less claustrophobic. The owner states that the small plot of land where their tiny home stands is all they can afford to buy, which explains why they settled for the special, one-story house. The husband proudly presents their collection of full-sized vinyl records, which just shows that no matter how small your space is, there is always space for your passions in life. Japanese master craftsman Tagami Haruhiko is well-known for his dream project: creating the very first full-sized house on wheels. While mobile campers and RVs have been common in the United States for decades, the concept of the crafted “small home” is a truly Japanese invention. Tagami’s creations are made of a variety of materials (but build predominantly with wood) and were initially intended to be upscale camping units. Later on, the master craftsman decided to expand his vision and create true homes that can be hitched to cars and trucks and brought wherever the owner wishes to be. Tagami’s creations weigh an average of just 500 kilograms. The craftsman is proud that with his design, an owner of such a home can park in a regular parking slot and drive across narrow country roads with no problems at all. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Angela Bailey (@bails.at.large) on Jun 19, 2018 at 3:49pm PDT Going vertical is the name of the game, and being able to fit more people into a limited space has been addressed by moving things up, literally. A 9.46 square meter rental unit costs around ¥66,500 ($607), excluding utilities and other fees. Ito, an IT engineer living in Tokyo, says that “so far it’s been comfortable. I keep my belongings to a bare minimum, and it’s easy to get around since everything is literally within arm’s reach. It gets cramped when friends visit, however. One person has to sit on the floor, while another goes up to the loft.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dearly Desiana / Ibu Jari 👍🏼 (@dearlydjoshua) on Mar 29, 2016 at 1:56am PDT The strategic shrinking of living spaces extends to hotels themselves. Capsule hotels abound in Japan, especially in busier cities like Tokyo, near airports. Capsule hotels offer an alternative means of accommodation to travelers who are just staying the night in a city, and plan to travel the next day. They’re more cost-effective, definitely no-frills, and they are extremely popular especially to backpackers and global tourists who want to see more of the country at lower cost. New Zealand Camper and New Zealand Motorhome hire online
If you always have the fuel needle in view, you can't run out of fuel. There are petrol stations everywhere in New Zealand, if there is a petrol station further away - such as on the west coast or in the center of the islands - there is usually a sign that indicates that the nearest petrol station is xy kilometers away. But based on our experience, I can give you the tip, always fill up roughly! when the tank is still half to max.

Information about the possibility of parking. Here a thick sign 'not for long vehicles' was enthroned at the entrance to the parking lot. Exemplary new zealand motorhome service in the Visitor Center !! Christchurch and Wellington, on the other hand, are more advanced, with plenty of parking for campers and RVs. Wild camping is common in New Zealand. It is sometimes the cheapest form of camping in New Zealand. However, there is the requirement to have a self contained camper.

These are these sprayed low budget campers. We already had a wicked camper in Australia for 2.5 months, so we got a nice discount for NZ. The wicked campers are special. But if you can live with astonished looks and absolutely rudimentary equipment, there is nothing better. There are some bus companies in New Zealand.
The campers in New Zealand have quite good heating, but the nights can still get pretty cold.

This region is our favorite in all of New Zealand. Nothing blew us away like the milk-blue glacial lakes Tekapo and Pukaki and the unique mountain panorama of the New Zealand Alps. Mighty mountains, fabulous views and milky glacial lakes, in which huge chunks of ice float, await you here.
Tumblr media
On smaller hiking trails you sometimes have to look a little, because there is not always so much space. If there are hikes or attractions that you definitely want to do 100%, we recommend arriving early. New Zealand is pure nature and there are really many places where we wished we could stop short. There are numerous viewpoints in New Zealand. However, we have often seen that the points are often in uninteresting places. • Almost all motorhome rental companies allow one-way rentals so that you can start in Auckland and fly back in Christchurch. The surcharge outweighs the double ferry trip between North and South Island.
