First Post in Notes from Dundee
The other day, I decided to resurrect an old Tumblr blog I abandoned in 2017. I've given this a new name too: NOTES FROM DUNDEE. I don't intend to write essays, poems, or short stories here. I'll leave those for my main blog (where my RAINSHINE series will return in January 2024):
In this new blog, I will just write a few rough notes on people, places, books, events, and other things I think about.
In this first post, I want to say a little about the ways the world can sneak up on you and bash you on the head. I mean the effect of very sad news. I'll start with a Dundee death I wasn't expecting. No one was expecting it. When trade unionist, mental health campaigner, Northern Soul aficionado, and all round great guy Phil Welsh passed away, suddenly, just a few days ago. I was shocked and had to re-read a post on Facebook a few times before it sunk in. I stayed shocked but also very moved as I watched videos of the funeral cortege the other day, flanked by dozens of Phil's friends on scooters.
When someone you know and admire suddenly passes away, it shakes you up. It reminds you, in the strongest possible way, that life is fragile and brief, and every moment is an incalculable treasure. I felt a similar blow earlier this year - when I heard of the passing of Sinead O'connor, and later the passing of singer Rodriguez, who I was lucky enough to see performing in Edinburgh, just a few years ago. I'm planning to write about all of those people in a RAINSHINE post next year. And, as I earlier announced on social media, all 12 of my monthly RAINSHINE posts next year are respectfully dedicated to the memory of Phil Welsh.
It takes me a while to adjust to any time when the world bashes me on the head. I'm sure most folk are the same. And, the phrase 'a while' is usefully elastic. Sometimes, it means - a long time. For me, one way I try to process the world bashing me on the head is to write about it. Here, it's just roughly. Like writing a wee note in a cafe, but sharing it, because maybe it'll matter to someone else who has also got bashed on the head.
As I write these words, bombs continue to fall in Gaza, and hundreds of people are dying. Many of those people are children. I cannot even describe those scenes as me getting bashed on the head by the world. It is more the case that it involves countless innocents being killed, and as I see what's happening, the feeling of sadness and hopelessness seems almost overwhelming. Like millions of others, I feel I am being bashed deep in my soul. I heard a man speak at a peace demo last week. His most powerful statement was in the moment when he was unable to speak, and he simply shook his head, at the horror of it all.
Life and death, horror and injustice, can seem overwhelming at times. All we can do is support each other in all of those moments when our ability to function as human beings is challenged. In the face of brutal wars, we must continue to campaign for peace. For ceasefire. For aid. For Hope, which can never be crushed. And, we must support each other to go on and recover from personal losses. To remember with huge respect all those lives which were spent striving to make this world a better place.

Been a Son: Krist Novoselic
The future bass player for Nirvana was born on May 16, 1965 in Compton, California to Croatian parents. Due to the rising cost of real estate in California, his family would move to Aberdeen, Washington in 1971. In 1980, Novoselic moved for one year to Croatia, then returned to Washington state. Growing up, the guitarist listened to bands like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, The Who, Van Halen, but he also listened to Yugoslavian bands such as Zabranjeno Pušenje, Prljavo kazalište and Azra. During his short stint in Croatia, Krist was introduced to punk rock mainstays like the Sex Pistols and the Ramones. He has said that his primary influences relating to how he plays bass included Paul McCartney, Geezer Butler, John Entwhistle, and Gene Simmons. Novoselic’s brother Robert actually introduced him to Kurt Cobain. The future Nirvana lead singer was hanging out with Robert at their house when Cobain heard loud music coming from upstairs. His brother soon informed Kurt that it was Krist playing punk rock music. Cobain and Novoselic soon became friends as they shared a love of music especially local band, the Melvins. Cobain gave the guitarist a copy of a demo tape from his former band called Fecal Matter asking if he would like to start a new group. After quite a few months, the bassist finally listened to the demo tape, and liked it well enough to agree to start a band with Cobain. The first band for this duo only lasted a few weeks before breaking up. The two tentatively agreed to move on, but quickly changed their mind when they learned that the Melvins were paid $80 a night for their shows. They quickly started a Creedence Clearwater Revival cover band, where Cobain played the drums, while Novoselic played guitar and sang vocals. This cover band did not last long at all, then a new group was formed after meeting drummer Aaron Burkhard. Although they never officially used the name, this technically became the first instance of Nirvana as a band. Burkhard would quickly leave the group, but they were able to get the drummer from the Melvins, Dale Crover, to fill in as they sought out a replacement. Chad Channing next joined the group as they would go on to record Nirvana’s debut album, Bleach. Krist contributed to the songwriting, always willing to share his ideas with Cobain. After the band recorded the album, it was Novoselic who drove to various record labels looking to sign with someone eventually choosing DGC Records. In 1992, Nirvana played the MTV Video Music Awards, where Novoselic attempted a bass toss, which went awry. He was not injured at the time, but the bassist pretended to be knocked out, which prompted Brian May of Queen to see if Novoselic needed medical attention. The bassist would many times sing backing vocals at Nirvana’s live shows and certain tracks from their albums. He would later say, "I kind of discovered my voice for the first time, and the more I did it, the better it got." In 1994, Nirvana got together for what would be their final recording session over the course of three days. Cobain was only present for the last day, but Novoselic and Dave Grohl worked on their own songs during the first two days. One track they played would be “Big Me,” a future hit for Grohl’s Foo Fighters. On that final day, Nirvana would record the track “You Know You’re Right.” After the tragic death of Cobain, Novoselic maintained privacy with his only public appearance being at the MTV Video Music Awards to pay tribute to the lead singer.
After the end of Nirvana, the guitarist continued to collaborate on music projects, the first being a new band called Sweet 75 in 1995 with Venezuelan born Yva Las Vegass. The duo would release a self-titled album in 1997. In 1996, he joined Johnny Cash, guitarist Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, and drummer Sean Kinney of Alice In Chains For a cover of “Time of the Preacher, which went on a Willie Nelson tribute album. In 1998, Krist directed his first film, L7. The premise represented a pseudo documentary offering up concert footage from three American cities shot in 1997. In 2002, Novoselic performed backing vocals for the Foo Fighters track “Walk The Line,” which stood out as a tribute to Kurt Cobain. Around that same time, he joined with Meat Puppets singer Curt Kirkwood, and former Sublime drummer Buddy Gaugh to form the group, Eyes Adrift. They were soon informed that another band from Australia had that name, so rather than paying any sort of license fee the group was called in America: Bud, Curt, and Krist. They would release a debut album in 2002 that was self-titled, but after touring they quickly broke up as the record failed commercially. For his next move, Novoselic announced that he would be stepping away from music for a while because he did not like all the promotion related to a new record. He still worked on musical projects, but mostly for himself, not for release. In 2006, the guitarist joined the band Flipper as their bass player for two years. He even worked with them on a new album, but left because the rest of the group was based in Ireland and England, not America. In 2011, Krist played bass guitar on a track for the Foo Fighters album, Wasting Light. A year later he played on the song “Cut Me Some Slack” with Paul McCartney and Dave Grohl at the 12-12-12 Festival. The recording would later be released winning a Grammy in 2014 for Best Rock Song. Allmusic had this to say about it: A tune with an “immediate hook [and] melody.” The collaboration would be given the nickname Sirvana, which referenced Sir Paul McCartney. Novoselic's current band is Giants in the Trees formed in 2017. They would release an album that same year.
Since high school, Krist Novoselic has always shown a strong interest in being politically active. In the early 1990’s, the state of Washington attempted to pass a bill called the Erotic Music Act, which made it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to purchase an album if the record was deemed too erotic. A lobbyist group was soon formed to prevent the bill from passing called the Washington Music Industry Coalition. Nirvana actively campaigned in support of the group, even playing a benefit concert to raise funds. In 1995, the state legislature tried to pass the same law as part of a new bill called the Matters Harmful to Minors Bill. At this time, Novoselic proposed that the music industry in Seattle start a political action committee called JAMPAC (Joint Artists and Musicians Political Action Committee). Over the next few years, this committee fought for change related to a number of laws including an antiquated 1985 law called the Teen Dance Ordinance. This meant that anyone under the age of 18 could not attend a concert without a chaperone to supervise him or her. The more involved Novoselic got with politics, his priorities seemed to move away from music. In 2004, he even considered running for lieutenant governor of Washington, but in the end decided against it. In 2008, he was named chair to the board of FairVote, an organization looking to reform electoral voting in this country. He would support Barack Obama in 2008 for president, but soon after that the guitarist decided to break from the Democratic Party in order to identify himself as an independent. He would continue to remain active in politics speaking his mind in various forums. Krist would write a column for a Seattle weekly newspaper blog from 2007 until 2010. The bassist would correctly predict how large a part social networks would soon play in the area of politics. In June 2020, Novoselic made some comments praising then President Donald Trump for his speech following the George Floyd riots. The musician would receive significant backlash causing him to release the statement. “As an avowed independent, I don't endorse a major party or candidate. And it feels insane to have to say this, but I don't support fascism, and I don't support an authoritarian state. I believe in a civilized society and that we all have to work toward that." Since then, Novoselic has made his Facebook page private and deleted his Twitter account.
In other forms of media, Krist Novoselic published a book in 2004 called Of Grunge and Government: Let's Fix This Broken Democracy! The book served as part autobiography and part political opinion. In 2009, he made a brief cameo in the film, The World’s Greatest Dad starring Robin Williams. The director Bobcat Goldthwait previously had opened for Nirvana. The guitarist has been married twice, 1989 and 2004. His current wife is Darbury Ayn Stenderu, an artist with whom he has two children. He resides in Deep River, Washington. “I live out in the country now and it's quiet and it's a place where I can think a lot."

EMBODY (CBS, New!) - Chai Hecht has sold a potential drama to the Eye in which "after a mission gone wrong renders her permanently blind, a special agent volunteers for an experimental government program that can temporarily transfer her consciousness into someone else's body, giving her the ability to see through their eyes as she infiltrates high-stakes situations and takes down criminals from within." It's viral nature demonstrated by the 135,000 retweets and likes it received, dwarfing creator Ben Skipper's 2,000 followers.

@PoliticsUKTD is one of the Twitter accounts powered by Tweetsdistilled, Lissted’s unique real time Twitter curation application.
The application had been dormant since the Tweetsdistilled experiment was ended back in February.
We decided to turn the PoliticsUKTD account back on when the snap UK General Election was announced as we were curious to see what it would highlight as being signficant.

Data and analysis
PoliticsUKTD’s results were based on the tweets of thousands of the top influencers in relation to UK Politics from right across the political spectrum. During the campaign period (18th April 2017 - 7th June 2017 inclusive) these influencers tweeted over 3 million times, including retweeting and replying to over 200,000 other accounts.
The Tweetsdistilled application tracked every tweet in real time, seeking out the ones that looked to have the most potential for influence. This assessment is based on a number of factors including who is reacting and the scope and velocity of that reaction.
This means to rank highly a tweet needs to be getting the attention of a lot of influential people, the wider Twitter community or preferably both.
Out of these 3 million tweets over 27,000 (around 500-600 per day) were rated of high significance. Based on an analysis of key terms used over 14,000 tweets from 2,756 different Twitter accounts were assessed as directly or indirectly related to the campaign. Between them these tweets were retweeted or liked over 21.2 million times.
NB: Unsurprisingly, a signficant number of high rated tweets in the campaign period were related to the tragic events in Manchester and London. Tweets that referenced parties and/or their leaders in relation to the attacks were included within the 14,000+ tweets used to produce the lists.
We summarised the 14,000+ high rated tweets into three Top 100 lists. To qualify for consideration an account needed to have a minimum of four tweets rated as high significance with an aggregate retweet and like count of greater than 1,000.

‘Kong’ Beats His Chest On Saturday: Weekend Opening Now At $61M – Sunday AM Final | Deadline

Reviewers already knew Kong: Skull Island was a fun ride different from other Kongs, and for moviegoers to believe it, they simply needed to experience the movie. Kong could capitalize on another recent B.O. trend: Well-reviewed movies like Universal/Blumhouse’s Get Out and 20th Century Fox’s Logan have experienced decent first Sunday holds (both those titles dipped 22% from Saturday). Tarzan legged out to a 3.2 multiple off its 3-day of $38.5M to $126.6M, and Kong could generate a similar multiple with an end result well north of $150M stateside (Beauty and the Beast will definitely take a bite out of his legs next weekend all around the world). BARNS COURTNEY - a biography (first published 2017)
“I always knew I wanted to perform somehow,” says Barns Courtney. “There are photos of me at three years old, with my teddy bears all lined up, singing into a plastic microphone. Music is just an inherent part of me, and it was something I couldn’t help but pursue.”
Suddenly, that pursuit has exploded into one of the most exciting music stories of recent times. The young artist went from working part-time jobs and sleeping in his car to scoring hits on both sides of the Atlantic.
“Fire,” Barns Courtney’s first U.S. single, took off at SiriusXM’s Spectrum channel and ultimately charted in the Top 5 at Triple A radio and within the Top 15 at the Alternative format. Bradley Cooper and Harvey Weinstein personally tapped it for use in the film Burnt. “Fire” was subsequently heard in advertising campaigns for the Showtime network, the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack and BOSE Soundsport Wireless Headphones.
Meanwhile, “Glitter & Gold” went to No. 1 on the Spotify UK Viral Chart. Soon Barns Courtney found himself opening for The Who at London’s Wembley Stadium and also supporting such artists as Ed Sheeran, Elle King and Blur.
Growing up in Seattle, Barns Courtney’s passion for music was apparent early on. “I’ve always written songs, for as long as I can remember,” he says. “I wrote songs before I could play an instrument, just little poems or whatever, as young as six or seven years old.
“I liked to make the other kids laugh, making up silly songs or doing comedy, but my school was so serious that it didn’t even have a drama department, so I couldn’t see any outlet for who I was.”
The first album that really captured his imagination was Nirvana’s Nevermind, which he listened to every day for a year while walking to school. Courtney wasn’t aware, though, that the band shared his hometown, or the importance of Seattle as a musical hub. When he was 14, an aunt gave him a guitar, which proved to be a pivotal event.
He began performing, bouncing between various bands, and also expanded his musical palette. “My music is based in Americana,” he says, “but I was definitely into the Libertines, the Fratellis, Arctic Monkeys, all those British indie bands.”
Barns Courtney dedicated himself to his songwriting. “I knew that what I was writing was terrible,” he says, “but I thought that if I kept working, by the time I was 20, I might be alright.” He signed a recording contract straight out of high school, but when that deal fell apart, he went through several years of struggle.
“I had no qualifications, and I was the guy who had kind of forgotten to grow up,” says Barns Courtney. “For three or four years, I was working in clubs and at a computer store. It got really scary. But I never thought about giving up—it’s important to put all your chips on one number or how do you rise above the competition? When I was being honest with myself, I realized the importance of pursuing the thing that you love.”
His frustration fueled the songs he was writing. “They were all about aspects of the same feeling, a desperation to get back in touch with the burning passion I had when I started out,” he says. “That huge, defiant feeling—‘I’ll show them, I’ll get there somehow,’ a sense that burns in your gut.”
Over time, Barns Courtney cobbled together a demo tape and sent it around as best he could. It turned out that a friend of his was also a friend of a booking agent, who fell in love with the songs. And miraculously, once they started circulating within the music industry, the floodgates opened. The producers of Burnt put in their offer for the anthemic, propulsive “Fire” at the same time that the BBC started to play “Glitter & Gold.” More television offers followed. “After so long with nothing happening,” he says, still expressing his disbelief, “everything erupted at once.”
Released in February 2017, his debut EP, The Dull Drums, contained “Fire”—which has more than 12 million streams globally, with half of those in the U.S.—and “Glitter & Gold”—which has more than 8.5 million streams worldwide—plus three brand new songs. Paste Magazine hailed him as “The Best of What’s Next” and noted, “There’s confidence. And then there’s the swaggering self-assurance displayed by raspy-throated…blues rocker Barns Courtney on his recent single ‘Fire,’ a swampy, Gospel-steeped stomper.” Baeble Music highlighted the track “ “Hands” as one of its “Songs We Loved This Week” and observed, “Courtney has that something that you just don’t get to hear enough of anymore.”
Now Barns Courtney is at work on his full-length debut. “I want to make an Americana, blues-inspired record,” he says of the sessions he is co-producing, “but I also love Kanye West and the way he’s taking old blues influences and bringing them into modern age.”
Meantime, he’s also trying to learn from the reaction he’s getting from live audiences, as he introduces to them to material they’ve never heard. “The feedback has been so good, it really gives me a new perspective on the tunes,” he says. “I’m realizing that it may be important not to compartmentalize or define my songwriting—that my voice can really be the unifying component for this set of songs.”
For Barns Courtney, an overnight sensation who was years in the making, the greatest pay-off for his work comes when he takes the stage each night. “It’s nice to have people like my music, but that’s fleeting,” he says. “The real reward is that exchange of energy when the singer and the crowd are both on the same level—when there’s an equal playing ground and we’re all in it together.”

The difference between inbound and outbound marketing lies in how businesses communicate with potential customers.
Outbound strategies confront an audience with information to persuade or encourage a purchase. Consider it like a public speaker shouting at passersby – the aim is to communicate their message clearly, but not necessarily stimulate dialogue. Long-standing forms of media advertising, like print ads, billboards and television commercials, follow this tactic.
Inbound marketing strategies, meanwhile, follow a softer approach, addressing an audience’s pain points or knowledge gaps with direct engagement and relevant content. This way, consumers come directly to your business for help with their problem.
Harking back to our prior example, imagine this public speaker is now completely silent, but instead inviting the public to sit and discuss their message in an open debate. This allows people to decide for themselves whether the speaker has something worth listening to. In internet marketing, this translates digital content, social media posts and email marketing campaigns.
While inbound marketing seems more indirect than its outbound equivalent, it can deliver better results. HubSpot’s 2017 ‘State of Inbound’ report found that nearly half of businesses said inbound marketing offers the highest ROI, compared to just 12 per cent which claimed outbound worked better. Further, those surveyed by HubSpot thought inbound strategies delivered the highest quality leads to point of sale (59 per cent) than equivalent outbound campaigns (16 per cent).

This head-to-head is made even more one-sided when you account for the opinions of those implementing marketing campaigns limited to outbound tactics alone. More than half of outbound marketers thought their organisation’s existing campaigns weren’t as effective as they could be (HubSpot).
The modern marketing strategy needs to do more than just shout information at potential customers and hope for a response. While traditional outbound advertising still has a place, a complete marketing campaign needs to bring its audience into the conversation.
1) The changing role of advertising
Advertising has had a prominent effect on society for over half a century. This is partly because the signs are everywhere you look! Billboards, the sides of buses, posters stuck to benches and walls – every available inch is a canvas on which enterprises can showcase their products/services.
This approach to marketing has followed business practice into the digital world too – the online advertising sector’s global value is expected to surpass $500 billion by 2023, according to research agency eMarketer. Additionally, digital ad spending is forecasted to increase by nearly 18 per cent in 2019 alone.
The spend on online advertising campaigns is based on one factor – reach. Millions of people worldwide can see a well-placed ad, while traditional advertising is often limited to potential customers in an immediate geographic area. A broader base of potential customers often means more people converting to sales.
However, online users can simply ignore your marketing efforts with ad blocker tools. Market research company Global Web Index claims nearly half of internet users now use one, with this figure even higher in Asia-Pacific. If the time and resources you devote towards paid marketing promotion might be reduced long-term, it’s vital you supplement outbound tactics with inbound.

2) Original and informative content remains king
Developing original content that prioritises fixing users’ problems is central to any internet marketing strategy. This is reflected by the fact that more than half of marketers said blog content creation was the primary inbound goal for next 12 months, according to HubSpot.
Articles highlighting key trends in your industry or focused on remedying ongoing customer issues is often the first port of call for improving content marketing efforts. But there are many other types of content that can be built into an internet marketing campaign. High value pieces such as whitepapers and visual guides can act as a critical differentiator between prospects and leads. Defined by reps as the hardest part of a sale (HubSpot), prospecting by determining your user’s level of interest means you can better target those close to conversion.
Similarly, info images and videos are an engaging way of letting your customers know your business aims go beyond just sales. Producing visual content helps to inform new and existing customers about your business and products/services. Making this easily accessible also allows users to share the content across social media platforms and email, bringing more people to your business with less direct and aggressive marketing efforts.

Back in November, the weekend before the election, a major voice over event took place.
I held my annual VOICE OVER REVOLUTION event.
This two day event was different this year.
Dave Fennoy, one of the top VO artists in the world, agreed to partner with me.
The result?
The two of us combined to create a learning experience that was packed with very specific, how to information.

In case you don’t know me, I’m Bill DeWees. I’m based in the “Chicago Area”. I’m a business and media veteran. I’ve recorded thousands of commercials, corporate projects, promos, and audiobooks.
