Hi, audio drama fam! CrowdUltra narrowed it down from 1,000 nominations to these top five new audio fiction shows, and I guarantee we are the most indie title on that list. Many, many thanks for listening and supporting the show!!! If you're unfamiliar, here's the new logline for Hell Gate City (Comedy Fiction):

After using new technology to live-stream his nightmares for ratings and *accidentally* broadcasting a repressed memory of his dad’s murder, a news radio host in Hell Gate City, a dystopian cyberpunk NYC, must solve the crime before he becomes the next victim.

Season 1 is out and binge-able. Back to work on wrapping up Season 2!

P.S. Screaming Panda is our production co. But I'm torn about whether we should launch a blog named Hell Gate City. We have a handle it on for other socials; it's just the exhaustion of maintaining everything. Launch a Hell Gate City blog here or stick with Screaming Panda? 🙏

How do Saratoan names work?

Two short words (one to two syllables each) in CamelCaps, should seem like it implies some possibly poetic meaning but somewhat opaque to interpretation.

The in universe explanation is that a type of poetry caught on in their culture in which these combination words were used to produce new terms that only existed in the context of poetic meaning. These words started being used as pen names, and since poets were heavily valued, the names caught on in the general population.

Parents frequently make up their own on the pattern, aiming only for "sounds mysterious" - so some of their names have 800 year old histories with meaningful and important poetry and sometimes it's like "I dunno sounded cool"

I love lower-case letters. I also love initial caps. I also love the notion of capitalizing Nouns like in German. And how A. A. Milne likes to do in Pooh. I also like camelCaps.

y’know maybe i’m stupid, but if you’re supposed to use underline_spacing in a programming language instead of camelCaps, and you’re a college professor making videos to teach that language, especially videos that people are paying for, maybe use underline_spacing instead of camelCaps.

How are the creatures of your world named? What kind of thought process goes into giving someone a name?

Since I have a lot of different kinds of characters and don’t want to build a conlang (let alone a dozen as the setting would necessitate) I have simple rules for character names that I determine from the outset

Saratoans are named two short words with CamelCaps (DimeSpin, BoneLatch, AtlasKind) the two words are ideally nonsensical together but sound like they could be poetic or evocative. The first word of the two should be fairly functional as a given name

Dryads are named a given name that sounds like or literally is a surname, and while they don’t have real surnames, the name of their tree stands in as a surname (Renwick Alder, Luz Willow)

Alligator hydras are named short names that either are derived from names of birds, mnemonics and written transcriptions of bird calls or single syllables I think could fit with a name I already liked. Their names are written in [right hand twin] and [left hand twin] order for my own ease of keeping them straight (Ani and Adler, Kee and Buzz)

L. dexter worker bees are named numbers, but in their base 12 counting system which I created my own terminology for how to say the numbers. I choose numbers based on liking the sound of it when spoken. (Seizy, Threeda) Queens are named two words that are supposed to be evocative of the hive’s overall identity and could double as edgy honey descriptions (Amber Rust, Blood Gold) drones are named according to what would be in character for the queen to name him (Sugar, Vulture)

Sornal is a holdover from when I was trying to make up names whole-cloth, but I have since moved on with other book animals to names that I think a human MIGHT give a child (or themselves) but are still more on the fanciful side (Ipswich, Aurora, Vetiver)

Agents can be named anything. Some Agents are named by others and thus I went for a “name of a cryptid” feel (The Autumn Man)  The ones that named themselves I try to think of names that are basically irrelevant to anything about them, since their names are either random words they liked or trying to pull a single word from a name that’s basically an entire movie (Hat, Parker)

Magiphages can also be named whatever. I try to actually make their names more connected to their actual physical design or personality. Thus we have names like Roosevelt (rose field, she’s rose themed) and Hearth (literally has a hearth in his face)

Wax’s full name is Wax Poetic As All Else In Life Wanes and I cannot begin to explain my thought process there besides that deep in his nature he’s a drama queen, as is the custom for cats. I will probably never name another character AN ENTIRE SENTENCE so uh... enjoy that one.
