“The 2nd most eventful day in my life, as regarded feelings, for I felt almost as if it were I that was being married over again, only much more nervous, — A thick fog, & a sharp frost early. — Whilst dressing dear Vicky came in to see me, looking, composed, & in a fine, quiet disposition. This relieved me greatly. We went down to breakfast with dear Alexandrine. Of course Fritz, whom I tenderly embraced, & who was much moved, was there too. The dear Princess also came in for the moment. — My Dressing room was arranged for Vicky & she began dressing at about 1/2 p. 10. Our hair was done by Nestor, one after the other. When she was ready she came through in her bridal attire, looking very pretty & nice. Her dress was of white moire antique, trimmed with 3 flounces of Honiton lace & wreaths & spray of orange flowers & myrtle. The wreath & veil were to match & the train was the same as the dress. My dress was of mauve moire antique & silver, trimmed with Honiton lace. I wore my Regal Diadem & the crown diamonds. My train was of velvet also trimmed with lace. Vicky was daguerreotyped in my room, & she & her dear father & I, together, but I trembled so that it has come out indistinct. Then, it was time to go.

The sun shining brightly, 1000s out, since very early, — shouting, — ringing of bells, &c. — Albert, Uncle & the 2 Boys went 1st, then the 3 girls in pink satin trimmed with Newport lace, Alice with a wreath of cornflowers & marguerites, the 2 others only with sprays of them, in their hair. The 4 Boys wore Highland dress. The Hall was full of people. The flourish of trumpets & cheering of thousands, made my heart sink within me, & I could hardly command myself. Vicky drove in the carriage with me, sitting opposite. At St. James's Palace we want into a prettily arranged retiring room, where Uncle, my dear Albert & the 8 Bridesmaids were waiting. They looked so nice, in white tulle dresses with wreaths & bouquets of pink roses & white heather.

Then went into the Closet where Mama (looking so handsome, in violet velvet, trimmed with ermine), & the Cambridges were. All the foreign Princes & Princesses excepting Uncle, the Prince, & Pce Albert had already taken up their places in the Chapel. A Procession was formed, just as at my wedding, only how small the older Royal Family had become! Mama came last, just before me, then Ld Palmerston, with the Sword Of State, Bertie & Affie, — I, with the 2 little Boys (on either side of me), which they say had a most touching effect, & the 3 girls following. The Chapel, though too small, looked very imposing & well, filled with so many Clergy, Officers, in bright uniforms, & elegantly dressed Ladies.

The drums & trumpets played Marches, the organ playing others, as the Processions approached & entered. There was of course a slight pause between each, & the effect was thrilling & striking as one heard the music coming nearer & nearer. Fritz behaved with the greatest self possession, as he came in, bowing to us, & then kneeling down before the altar, in a most truly devotional manner. Last came the Bride's Procession, our darling ‘Flower’ looking very touching & lovely, with such an innocent, confident & serious expression, on her dear face. She walked between her beloved Father & dear Uncle Leopold, who had been present at both her Christening & Confirmation.

My last fear of being overcome, vanished, when I saw Vicky's calm & composed manner. It looked beautiful seeing her kneeling beside Fritz, their hands joined, her long train born by the 8 young ladies, who looked like a cloud of young girls hovering round her, as they knelt near her. How it reminded me of my having similarly, proudly, tenderly, confidently knelt beside my beloved Albert, in the very same spot. The Children, (the 3 girls) were a good deal ‘énnu’ & Alice cried dreadfully. The Archbishop was very nervous. Both Vicky & Fritz spoke very plainly.

When the service was over we tenderly embraced the young couple, & then Vicky went to her new Parents & we crossed over to the dear Prince & Princess, who were much moved. After this the Bride & Bridegroom left the Chapel hand, in hand, followed by their supporters, Mendelssohn's Wedding march being played, & we all went up to the Throne Room, where the Register was signed. Here there were general congratulations & shaking of hands, with all the relations. After all the Royalties had signed their names, the Clergy, Ministers &c. followed, & the young couple returned to Buckingham Palace together. I drove with Uncle & the Princess, whom I asked to call me ‘Du’.

Tremendous crowds, & cheering & we went with the young couple to the celebrated window, from which they stepped out on to the balcony to show themselves, we, Uncle, & the Pce & Pss also coming out. We all went to the White Drawing room, where we were met by Hélène Orléans, her 2 sons, the Aumales & Princess de Salerno, then, came the wedding breakfast 'en famille’, in which were included Pce John of Holstein & our 6 other Children! The young couple sat together, opposite us, but hid by a splendid wedding cake. I, sat between Uncle & the Pce of Prussia, Ld St. Germans, who sat at the bottom of the table, was the only other person there. The Band played. At dessert, Leopold & the darling Baby, dressed in pink, like her sisters, with a little bunch of cornflowers & marguerites in her cap, came in.

After luncheon we separated almost immediately, for the young couple to change their clothes. Huntingdon Wedding Photography - The George Hotel | Tori+Glen

I'm finally getting back into blogging again, it feels like starting back at work after a very long holiday.

Tori contacted me via Facebook after I'd responded to her post about looking for a photographer. I think a lot of people (and understandably so) only search for suppliers within their local area. Personally I love to travel, whether it's in the UK or further afield, so it really doesn't phase me. When I found out the wedding would take place in Cambridge (literally a stone's throw from my old house), and they would have their reception at The George Hotel in Huntingdon, I knew it was for me. I also got to visit my family who still live in Lincolnshire, so everyone was a winner.

The George Hotel is a beautiful 17th Century traditional coaching inn, right in the centre of Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. We started in the morning with the bridal prep, with hair and makeup by.... . The sun was shining giving the most amazing mix of light and shadow in their room. I always like the buzz of bridal prep, plus it's a great chance to get to know the bridal party and any other family members that are around.

The ceremony was held at the Cambridge Register Office, followed by some family shots on the lawn opposite, then came the dark clouds and rain just as we got into the cars to head back to Huntingdon and start the party. Tori and Glen are clearly a couple after my own heart, arriving fashionably late after a pit-stop at Costa on the way back.

I can honestly say that I had the biggest dinner (3 courses) that I've ever had at a wedding, and if I wasn't their photographer, I'd probably have needed a nap. I had a nice pot of tea, followed by a cheeky G&T, and it was time to party.

I know it's a fairly even split about whether to have kids at a wedding or not, and I know it's a personal choice, but I love having them around as they make for some awesome - and very often hilarious - shots! I've never seen a grown adult strut into the middle of the dancefloor with and inflatable guitar and rock out like they were an A List rock star.

Before I left I made sure I got a bag full of pick n mix (my treat for when I'm editing), had a few hugs and goodbyes.

Two weddings down, and this year is off to a cracking start.

As a Muslim, I struggle with the idea of homosexuality – but I oppose homophobia

I've made homophobic remarks in the past, writes Mehdi Hasan, but now I’ve grown up — and reconciled my Islamic beliefs with my attitude to gay rights.

’Tis the season of apologies – specifically, grovelling apologies by some of our finest academic brains for homophobic remarks they’ve made in public. The Cambridge University theologian Dr Tim Winter, one of the UK’s leading Islamic scholars, apologised on 2 May after footage emerged showing him calling homosexuality the “ultimate inversion” and an “inexplicable aberration”. “The YouTube clip is at least 15 years old, and does not in any way represent my present views . . . we all have our youthful enthusiasms, and we all move on.”

The Harvard historian Professor Niall Ferguson apologised “unreservedly” on 4 May for “stupid” and “insensitive” comments in which he claimed that the economist John Maynard Keynes hadn’t cared about “the long run” because he was gay and had no intention of having any children.

Dare I add my non-academic, non-intellectual voice to the mix? I want to issue my own apology. Because I’ve made some pretty inappropriate comments in the past, too.

You may or may not be surprised to learn that, as a teenager, I was one of those wannabe-macho kids who crudely deployed “gay” as a mark of abuse; you will probably be shocked to discover that shamefully, even in my twenties, I was still making the odd disparaging remark about homosexuality.

It’s now 2013 and I’m 33 years old. My own “youthful enthusiasm” is thankfully, if belatedly, behind me.

What happened? Well, for a start, I grew up. Bigotry and demonisation of difference are usually the hallmark of immature and childish minds. But, if I’m honest, something else happened, too: I acquired a more nuanced understanding of my Islamic faith, a better appreciation of its morals, values and capacity for tolerance.

Before we go any further, a bit of background – I was attacked heavily a few weeks ago by some of my co-religionists for suggesting in these pages that too many Muslims in this country have a “Jewish problem” and that we blithely “ignore the rampant anti-Semitism in our own backyard”.

I hope I won’t provoke the same shrieks of outrage and denial when I say that many Muslims also have a problem, if not with homosexuals, then with homosexuality. In fact, a 2009 poll by Gallup found that British Muslims have zero tolerance towards homosexuality. “None of the 500 British Muslims interviewed believed that homosexual acts were morally acceptable,” the Guardian reported in May that year.

Some more background. Orthodox Islam, like orthodox interpretations of the other Abrahamic faiths, views homosexuality as sinful and usually defines marriage as only ever a heterosexual union.

This isn’t to say that there is no debate on the subject. In April, the Washington Post profiled Daayiee Abdullah, who is believed to be the only publicly gay imam in the west. “[I]f you have any same-sex marriages,” the Post quotes him as saying, “I’m available.” Meanwhile, the gay Muslim scholar Scott Siraj al-Haqq Kugle, who teaches Islamic studies at Emory University in the United States, says that notions such as “gay” or “lesbian” are not mentioned in the Quran. He blames Islam’s hostility towards homosexuality on a misreading of the texts by ultra-conservative mullahs.

And, in his 2011 book Reading the Quran, the British Muslim intellectual and writer Ziauddin Sardar argues that “there is absolutely no evidence that the Prophet punished anyone for homosexuality”. Sardar says “the demonisation of homosexuality in Muslim history is based largely on fabricated traditions and the unreconstituted prejudice harboured by most Muslim societies”. He highlights verse 31 of chapter 24 of the Quran, in which “we come across ‘men who have no sexual desire’ who can witness the ‘charms’ of women”. I must add here that Abdullah, Kugle and Sardar are in a tiny minority, as are the members of gay Muslim groups such as Imaan. Most mainstream Muslim scholars – even self-identified progressives and moderates such as Imam Hamza Yusuf in the United States and Professor Tariq Ramadan in the UK – consider homosexuality to be a grave sin. The Quran, after all, explicitly condemns the people of Lot for “approach[ing] males” (26:165) and for “lust[ing] on men in preference to women” (7:81), and describes marriage as an institution that is gender-based and procreative.

What about me? Where do I stand on this? For years I’ve been reluctant to answer questions on the subject. I was afraid of the “homophobe” tag. I didn’t want my gay friends and colleagues to look at me with horror, suspicion or disdain.

So let me be clear: yes, I’m a progressive who supports a secular society in which you don’t impose your faith on others – and in which the government, no matter how big or small, must always stay out of the bedroom. But I am also (to Richard Dawkins’s continuing disappointment) a believing Muslim. And, as a result, I really do struggle with this issue of homosexuality. As a supporter of secularism, I am willing to accept same-sex weddings in a state-sanctioned register office, on grounds of equity. As a believer in Islam, however, I insist that no mosque be forced to hold one against its wishes.

If you’re gay, that doesn’t mean I want to discriminate against you, belittle or bully you, abuse or offend you. Not at all. I don’t want to go back to the dark days of criminalisation and the imprisonment of gay men and women; of Section 28 and legalised discrimination. I’m disgusted by the violent repression and persecution of gay people across the Muslim-majority world.

I cringe as I watch footage of the buffoonish Mahmoud Ahmadinejad claiming: “In Iran, we don’t have homosexuals . . . we do not have this phenomenon.” I feel sick to my stomach when I read accounts of how, in the late 1990s, the Taliban in Afghanistan buried gay men alive and then toppled brick walls on top of them.

Nor is this an issue only in the Middle East and south Asia. In March, a Muslim caller to a radio station in New York stunned the host after suggesting, live on air, that gay Americans should be beheaded in line with “sharia law”. Here in the UK, in February, Muslim MPs who voted in favour of the same-sex marriage bill – such as the shadow justice secretary, Sadiq Khan – faced death threats and accusations of apostasy from a handful of Muslim extremists. And last year, a homophobic campaign launched by puffed-up Islamist gangs in east London featured ludicrous and offensive stickers declaring the area a “gay-free zone”.

I know it might be hard to believe, but Islam is not a religion of violence, hate or intolerance – despite the best efforts of a minority of reactionaries and radicals to argue (and behave) otherwise. Out of the 114 chapters of the Quran, 113 begin by introducing the God of Islam as a God of mercy and compassion. The Prophet Muhammad himself is referred to as “a mercy for all creation”. This mercy applies to everyone, whether heterosexual or homosexual. As Tariq Ramadan has put it: “I may disagree with what you are doing because it’s not in accordance with my belief but I respect who are you are.” He rightly notes that this is “a question of respect and mutual understanding”.

I should also point out here that most British Muslims oppose the persecution of homosexuals. A 2011 poll for the think tank Demos found that fewer than one in four British Muslims disagreed with the statement “I am proud of how Britain treats gay people”.

There is much to be proud of, but still much to be done. Homophobic bullying is rife in our schools. Nine out of ten gay or lesbian teenagers report being bullied at school over their sexual orientation. LGBT teens are two to three times more likely to commit suicide than their heterosexual peers.

Despite the recent slight fall in “sexual orientation hate crimes”, in 2012 there were still 4,252 such crimes in England and Wales, four out of every five of which involved “violence against the person”. In March, for instance, a man was jailed for killing a gay teenager by setting him on fire; the killer scrawled homophobic insults across 18-year-old Steven Simpson’s face, forearm and stomach.

Regular readers will know that I spend much of my time speaking out against Islamophobic bigotry: from the crude stereotyping of Muslims in the media and discrimination against Muslims in the workplace to attacks on Muslim homes, businesses and places of worship.

The truth is that Islamophobia and homophobia have much in common: they are both, in the words of the (gay) journalist Patrick Strudwick, “at least partly fuelled by fear. Fear of the unknown . . .” Muslims and gay people alike are victims of this fear – especially when it translates into hate speech or physical attacks. We need to stand side by side against the bigots and hate-mongers, whether of the Islamist or the far-right variety, rather than turn on one another or allow ourselves to be pitted against each other, “Muslims v gays”.

We must avoid stereotyping and demonising each other at all costs. “The biggest question we have as a society,” says a Muslim MP who prefers to remain anonymous, “is how we accommodate difference.”

Remember also that negative attitudes to homosexuality are not the exclusive preserve of Muslims. In 2010, the British Social Attitudes survey showed that 36 per cent of the public regarded same-sex relations as “always” or “mostly wrong”.

A Muslim MP who voted in favour of the same-sex marriage bill tells me that most of the letters of protest that they received in response were from evangelical Christians, not Muslims. And, of course, it wasn’t a Muslim who took the life of poor Steven Simpson.

Yet ultimately I didn’t set out to write this piece to try to bridge the gap between Islam and homosexuality. I am not a theologian. Nor am I writing this in response to the ongoing parliamentary debate about the pros and cons of same-sex marriage. I am not a politician.

I am writing this because I want to live in a society in which all minorities – Jews, Muslims, gay people and others – are protected from violence and abuse, from demonisation and discrimination. And because I want to apologise for any hurt or offence that I may have caused to my gay brothers and lesbian sisters.

And yes, whatever our differences – straight or gay, religious or atheist, male or female – we are all brothers and sisters. As the great Muslim leader of the 7th century and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, Ali ibn Abi Talib, once declared: “Remember that people are of two kinds; they are either your brothers in religion or your brothers in mankind.”

Millennials are transforming India’s $50 billion wedding industry

MUMBAI— Priyanka Chopra hosted her nuptials with Nick Jonas last December, a time when the weather cools, and Indians often get married. The end of the year is also a more festive time in the calendar when extended family and members of the Indian diaspora often travel home. Given the demand, couples generally have to pay a premium to get married between October and December.

But tastes are changing, and weddings are now being held year-round, according to Sabyasachi Mukherjee, one of India’s leading couturiers. “Confident millennials want to get married when they do and have the weddings they want in a certain budget,” says the designer, who diverted his business away from ready-to-wear and now focuses almost entirely on bridal and occasion-wear.

The $50 billion Indian wedding market has had to revamp. The reward for getting it right is immense: Half of India’s 1.3 billion-strong population is under the age of 30, incomes are growing, and the ubiquity of social media has led to a showcase of aspirational weddings on Instagram. Euromonitor International forecasts that India’s $1 billion luxury fashion segment will register a 20.3 percent compounded annual growth rate over the next five years. The high-end jewelry category is expanding almost as fast. This year’s Indian Vogue Wedding Show, which kicks off in Delhi on 2 August, is expected to draw 6,000 high-income visitors from more than 100 towns, says Arjun Mehra, Condé Nast India’s chief business officer. (Condé Nast India is owned by the same parent company as Vogue Business.)

Year-round collections

Bridalwear designers now need to create clothes that work year-round and cater to more informal tastes. Decadent lehengas, a type of ankle-length skirt, are being ditched in favor of toned-down looks. “I am tired of hearing how the most expensive couture clothes in India are so uncomfortable that brides weep because they are miserable and cannot walk,” says Tarun Tahiliani, one of the country’s more established designers.

While houses will continue to offer bridal looks in the traditional red and pink palette, sheer fabrics, pastels, and lighter embellishments are also gaining popularity. “We make sure our designs offer looks for different seasons, especially for destination weddings,” says Anita Dongre, who has dressed the Duchess of Cambridge. “It is important to maintain the kind of look and aesthetic for the different seasons to create a wedding dream.”

Anita Dongre has an annual turnover of 700 crores (£82 million). Her bridal business has grown 30 percent over the past year.

With new lines dropping, there has been a commensurate increase in marketing. London-based retailer Aashni + Co, which stocks popular Indian brands like Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, will start selling pieces for year-round weddings in 2020. “[This has resulted in] year-round marketing spend over campaigns and social media. It is pretty much a spillover effect but with positive outcomes,” says founder Aashni Shah.

This has also translated to more year-round employment. Tahiliani is hunting for more factory space, having added 500 embroiderers and a few hundred other positions in related skills. Anita Dongre now has an annual turnover of over 700 crores (£82.2 million), after her bridal business grew 30 percent in the last year. She recently opened a luxury bridalwear store in Kolkata.

Outfitting the family

Indian weddings are large affairs. A guest list of 1,000 is not unusual. The wedding involves a minimum of three events before the actual ceremony, often followed by a reception. However, social media culture has upped the ante, particularly after the weddings last year of Bollywood star Deepika Padukone and Reliance Group heiress Isha Ambani. “Their endorsement is always a mover for sales and great business,” says Sandeep Khosla, one half of designer duo Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, which Ambani wore for her nuptials.

It is increasingly common for affluent Indians to spend on outfitting family members and even guests for the occasion — all the better to show off on Instagram. Brides are becoming more conscious about how weddings are documented, and with the aim of a uniform aesthetic, close family will also choose looks from the same brand. For example, Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s nuptials in Lake Como saw the bridal party in a variety of creations by Sabyasachi. “Wedding collections are no longer just about the bride,” says Mukherjee, adding that wealthy clients are willing to spend from $30,000 to $1.5 million on wedding wear.

Opportunities for international designers

Celebrity couples have worn a mix of traditional Indian designers and international labels at recent celebrations. Ambani wore an intricately detailed Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla ensemble for her big day, but events leading up to the wedding and reception parties saw her in Valentino and Giambattista Valli pieces.

While these were one-off pieces, there is space for non-Indian designers to tailor their offerings for local tastes. Giorgio Armani will soon release wedding-themed menswear in Indian cuts, and Jimmy Choo is planning to launch custom men’s shoes in India after making a pair for Indian actor Sonam Kapoor Ahuja’s 2018 wedding.

One early player was Canali, whose Maharaja style-inspired Nawab collection “continues to generate year-long revenue”, says Surabhi Negi, a spokesperson for Reliance Brands, which holds Canali’s Indian license. Another is the Nepalese-American designer Prabal Gurung, who has long dressed Bollywood celebrities and whose couture-like Atelier Prabal Gurung line has been used for bridalwear. Earlier this year, the designer created his first bridal lehenga for Indian-American client Anjuli Nanda Diamond, a red number that bore details of her relationship with her husband. “It is all managed through our private client business and is targeted for a client who wants to be hands-on,” says the designer.

“The revolution of luxury ready-to-wear fashion within the bridal market has seen tremendous growth,” says Shah. “The bridal space is running its pace in full glory.”

LONDON — One photograph was taken by the Duchess of Cambridge, his mother, when he was just 3 days old.

The other was taken on the third birthday of his older sister, Princess Charlotte.

He is Prince Louis, fifth in line to the British throne, son of Prince William and great-grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

Kensington Palace released the first two official photographs of the newborn on Sunday, and there enough details about the images to satiate the appetite of royal fans.

One photo shows Princess Charlotte, the prince’s sister, planting a kiss on his brow while he is sound asleep. That image was taken on Wednesday, the palace said, the day she turned 3.

She is wearing what the news outlets called a royal hand-me-down: a blue and white cardigan worn by her older brother, Prince George, 4, for a family portrait marking the queen’s 90th birthday in April 2016.

In the other photograph, Prince Louis, wide-eyed and looking calm, is clad in a white jumper previously worn by Charlotte soon after she was born, according to The Sunday Times. He is shown lying atop a cushion and a blanket embroidered with a rose.

That image was taken on April 26, three days after he was born, the palace said. (The duke and duchess celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary on April 29.)

The duchess, an art history grad, has released pictures to mark other milestones in her children’s lives, including George and Charlotte’s first days at nursery school.

Louis was born in the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in central London, weighing 8 pounds 7 ounces.

His full name — Louis Arthur Charles — was announced on April 27, and his parents formally registered the birth on Tuesday at Kensington Palace in front of an official from the Westminster Register Office.
