Gastown of the 1990s, a realist painting of Water Street and the Gastown Steam Clock by Paul Rupert. Paul Rupert (1946-2013) was a Canadian realist painter who trained under Arthur Lismer of the Group of Seven. From his obituary in the National Post:

Paul obtained his formal training at the school of art and design of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, where he studied under the late Arthur Lismer (Group of Seven) and at Concordia University. His unique use of the palette knife and oil paints earned him worldwide recognition in such noted collections as: Royal Bank of Canada, Corby's Distilleries, International Bankers Club in Hong Kong, Molson Breweries, Montreal Stock Exchange, Canadian Embassy in Washington, Governments of Alberta and Ontario, Canada House and Ontario House in London, England, The National Gallery, The Claridge Collection, Lower Canada College and many others. Paul was commissioned to paint many of North America's renowned golf courses including The Royal Montreal Golf Club, The Shaughnessy Golf Club in Vancouver, Nicklaus North, Chateau Whistler, and The Augusta National Golf Club.

You can date the painting to around 1994 or beyond, not from the cars which are mostly from the 1980s, but from the Starbucks located at Water and Cambie Streets. This location operated there from 1994-2022, when it was announced in January it had closed permanently after 28 years at this location.

I don't see many other paintings around Vancouver by Paul, and I can't find a record of any major shows he had here, though it is quite likely he did exhibit work here at some point, especially with this poster as evidence, and his work with the Shaughnessy Golf Club. If you spot more of Rupert's local work, let me know!

Jan Pieter van Bredael (II) - Winter - 

Jan Pieter van Bredael the Younger or Jan Peeter van Bredael the Younger (27 July 1683 – 1735) was a Flemish painter known for his cavalry battle scenes and landscapes with genre scenes of village festivals and fairs.

Like his father and brother Jan Pieter van Bredael specialized in representations of cavalry encounters. In a time of increased conflict with the Ottoman Empire there was a significant demand for paintings depicting battles between Christian and Turkish forces. His patron Prince Eugene was an important general in the war against the Ottomans and commissioned from Jan Pieter several pictures on this subject as well as of hunting scenes. As van Bredael also painted battle scenes from the Spanish War of Succession (1701-1714) in which Prince Eugene did not have a command, it can be assumed that Prince Eugene was not the only patron of the artist. Most of the cavalry compositions depict generic ambushes and skirmishes not specifically related to any particular battle. Jan Pieter’s cavalry pieces are characterized by their lively palette and relatively loose brushwork.

Jan Pieter van Bredael also painted many landscapes with villages and popular revelries, games and celebrations. An example are the pair of compositions of Winter and Summer (Sold by Cambi on 13 March 2013, lot 258) depicting winter and summer activities in respectively a Flemish and an Italianate village.

He usually signed his paintings with the monogram 'J.P.van:Bredal'.

In his 1885 publication recounting his exploration of the City of Florence, author Emilio Bacciotti, described Ulise Cambi, who died on April 7th, 1895, as “one of the old glories of the Academy of Fine Arts.” (p.29). He continued by listing many of the most famous works of the artist including a number of portraits of famous men including his “living and speaking statue” of the Carlo Goldoni and his depiction of Benvenuto Cellini in the Uffizi portrait gallery. Cambi is praised for the way that his work combined neoclassical form with naturalism. It was this synthesis that led to his Love as a Beggar, to be displayed at the 1855 Exposition in Paris.

Born on September 7, 1807, Cambi, the son of sculptor Pietro Cambi who studied first at the Accademia di Belle Arti e Liceo Artistico in Florence, was, by 1833, in Rome. By 1841 he had a professorship at the Accademia and had begun work on a number of projects including his funerary monument to Luigi Sabatelli in Santa Croce. His popularity grew based on the success of that, and other, projects.

No dare mas detalles, pues esta historia es muy personal y solo lo saben muy pocas personas, y lo quiero asi, pues me falta un largo camino por recorrer para que sea perfecta.
