I’ve read this passage so many times, but I never grasp how Bebe must have felt until recently.

When the realities, threats, and overall darkness of the art world are revealed, it can really shatter an artist’s spirit.

I didn’t think I would post Wayside fanart again, and I display it in rather a serious (although a bit heartwarming) tone. However, the creative world has been extremely rough lately, and I needed to release my stress in some way. This just turned out to be one of them.

The current state for artists (or any other kind of creative) in general has not been doing well: animation has been removed or cancelled by selfish corporations, D&D new OGL 1.1 threatens third parties, and AI art with its unethical methods stealing from hard-working human artists is on the rise (the last one is especially a problem, but at least there’s hope).

It’s getting real discouraging to do anything with art again with all this happening…

I’m just glad Bebe was able to bounce back as she continues to draw as shown in later books, and she has a great friend like Calvin for support.

The creative world has never been easy, but in dark times like this, we can at least hope.

A little fun fact to lighten things up: I’ve loved Bebe and Calvin’s friendship since I was kid because they really got each others back. I discovered them during a time when the boy-girl thing was big among my peers. So, to see a platonic boy-girl relationship without any of that drama was very nice.

SHE'S SO POPULAR: "I was the social butterfly. The only reason I went to school was because all my friends were going. I didn't go to learn. I only went because I had cheerleading practice and drama club."

I LOVE THE NIGHT LIFE: "I used to sneak out of the house with my girlfriends when I was a senior in high school and we'd go into San Francisco to the underground new wave clubs. Never got caught."

PURPLE HAZE: "I had purple hair at one point. Cellophanes were really big in the eighties. When they put it on my hair, my hair was so absorbant that it just sort of turned this burgandy/purpleish shade and I was known in high school as the girl with the purple hair. It's even in our yearbook."

CRUSH ON YOU: "When I was a kid, it was Donny Osmond. In high school, it was Scott Baio, baby, the JOANIE LOVES CHACHI years and Rob Lowe from St. Elmo's Fire. The best. Oh if i can share for you and the other anon! - Alot of the rumours came from Henrys fans who couldn't accept that Henry was simply no longer needed at DC. They tried to say Gunn and DC hated him because they announced the superman reboot on Henrys birthday, even though the reboot was for the very first Black Superman which is a character called Calvin Ellis, not Clark Kent.

Then last year his fans went crazy and said Henry was dropped by DC and Gunn after 5 weeks because they fired him but the truth is, he was never hired back. Henry announced his return before he'd signed any contract with DC to return.

There's a whole rabbit hole about the situation last year being the result of Dwayne 'the rock' Johnson trying to take over DC during his Black Adam movie (dwayne convinced Henry to come back for the black adam cameo + Henrys manager is Dwaynes ex wife and business partner.
