Who is James McConnell? 18-year-old midfielder training with Liverpool first team
Tumblr media
Who is James McConnell? 18-year-old midfielder training with Liverpool first team James McConnell has been making the most of his time since joining Liverpool, and it's no surprise that he has now been recognized as part of the first team. Alongside more experienced players, McConnell and a group of young players have been invited by Jurgen Klopp to participate in the team's pre-season training camp in Germany. Although McConnell, who is 18 years old, may not have had as much exposure at the senior level as Bobby Clark, Ben Doak, and Melkamu Frauendorf, nor does he have the football legacy of Lewis Koumas, or the high transfer fee that brought Calum Scanlon to Liverpool, those who have been closely following the Academy have always recognized McConnell's potential. He is known for his energetic and attacking style of play, and he first made an impression when he joined Liverpool's under-18 team at the age of 16 after transferring from Sunderland's U15 team. McConnell made a strong impression during his first start in the U18 Premier League North, scoring a great goal that contributed to a 2-1 victory against Stoke City in February 2021. Throughout the 2020/21 season, under the guidance of U18s coach Marc Bridge-Wilkinson, he consistently played at that level and showed progress, leading to him signing his first professional contract shortly after his 17th birthday in September 2021. During that season, McConnell showcased his versatility by playing in various midfield positions, both in attacking and defensive roles. He even played on the left side and scored a goal in the 4-0 win over Everton U18s in the derby match. However, it was the following season when McConnell truly excelled. He started the campaign as a key player in the central midfield for the U18s and scored in the 4-2 victory against Manchester United. His contributions extended to Liverpool's UEFA Youth League run, where he made a significant impact in the 2-1 win against Napoli, setting the tone for the team. He went on to start six out of eight games in the competition, helping Liverpool reach the quarter-finals. In addition, McConnell had the opportunity to play for the U21 side in the EFL Trophy. He played the full 90 minutes in an unusual right-back position during a narrow 1-0 defeat against Rochdale in September. Liverpool's confidence in McConnell was further demonstrated when he signed a new long-term contract the following month. He then made his debut in the Premier League 2, playing in the second half of the 2-1 victory over Everton in the mini-derby. However, McConnell experienced a setback when he suffered an injury, which kept him sidelined for several months. Fortunately, in February, he made his return to the U18s squad and immediately made an impact by scoring goals in consecutive games against Manchester City and Nottingham Forest. "We have missed James when he has not been available due to injury," said Bridge-Wilkinson after an impressive showing by McConnell in a 4-0 win at Newcastle United in April. "I thought he was really good at Newcastle. Obviously he is one of the older players in our group and he played with a mature head. He has got a lot of quality and I thought he showed that." Towards the end of the U18s campaign, McConnell continued to make an impact by contributing a goal and an assist in a subsequent match. He also achieved another milestone by scoring his first goal in the Premier League 2 when he came off the bench and headed home the only goal for the U21s in their final match against Crystal Palace. With upcoming friendly matches against Karlsruhe on Wednesday and Greuther Furth the following Monday, McConnell will aim to impress Jurgen Klopp and the coaching staff in the hopes of earning playing time. Given his track record, it would not be surprising if McConnell adds another notable achievement to his growing list of accomplishments during these upcoming days. The Reds’ transfer news as of late has included some of the finest names in world football, with the likes of Dayot Upamecano, Eder Militao, Perr Schuurs, and Milan Skriniar to name a few. However, the club’s first bit of business this season has come in the surprising form of Birmingham City youngster Calum Scanlon, with the club reportedly agreeing on a six-figure deal for the 15-year-old to join the Reds’ academy. An England youth international and Birmingham City academy starlet, Scanlon is a real talent in the eyes of Jurgen Klopp and the Reds to want to shell out that amount of money on the youngster – Klopp is clearly looking tot he future and it would be wise to do so considering the recent academy talent to break through into the first team this season with many names making a great impression on the fans. Who is our best midfielder? Gini Wijnaldum Vote Thiago Vote Fabinho Vote Jordan Henderson Vote Players such as Caoimhín Kelleher, Curtis Jones, Neco Williams, Rhys Williams, and Nat Phillips have all been impressive this season when called upon, with injuries to players such as Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Thiago, and Naby Keita at times had led to chances in the starting XI for the aforementioned five – with all of them slotting in extremely well into Klopp’s side. The 15-year-old can play in the left side of defence and in midfield, with his versatility and talent something that could mold him into a fantastic player for the club. Football fans will instantly think towards former Birmingham youngster Jude Bellingham who joined Borussia Dortmund in the summer and has done extremely well, with the midlands club’s academy clearly doing something right with churning out some fantastic players as of late – and hopefully, Scanlon will do the same. What do you think Liverpool fans, could Calum Scalon be a future star or is it too early to tell? Liverpool set to sign Newcastle teenager Bobby Clark | Goal.com

Liverpool CorrespondentLast Updated30 minutes ago11:15Jul 23, 2021Link copiedCommentsInstagram/Bobby_Clark10The 16-year-old winger is expected to move to Merseyside in the next few weeks, but highly-rated Ethan Ennis is off to Manchester UnitedLiverpool have agreed a deal to sign teenage winger Bobby Clark from Newcastle, Goal can confirm. The 16-year-old, regarded as one of the brightest prospects at the Magpies’ academy, is expected to move to Merseyside in time for the new season, where he will join up with Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s U18s side. Liverpool will have to pay a compensation fee for Clark, and if a deal between the clubs cannot be agreed then it will be settled by a tribunal. Editors' Picks Who is Bobby Clark?Clark is the son of former Newcastle, Sunderland and Fulham midfielder Lee, and made history in 2019 when becoming the youngest player to feature for Newcastle’s U18 team, aged just 14 years and 206 days. He has represented England at schoolboy level, and has regularly been linked with some of Europe’s top clubs. Indeed, his father was forced to deny reports a deal had been agreed with Tottenham, while Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are also said to have been keen. Newcastle, it is understood, have made Clark an offer to stay at St James’ Park, but he is instead expected to move to Liverpool in the next few weeks, once the finer points of the switch are finalised. Where will he play at Liverpool? He will begin under Bridge-Wilkinson with the Reds’ U18 side, which is set to feature a host of new faces as several members of last season’s team, which reached the FA Youth Cup final, move up to the U23s. Kaide Gordon, the 16-year-old signed from Derby in January, is with Jurgen Klopp’s senior squad at their pre-season camp in Austria, while the likes of Tyler Morton, Conor Bradley and Billy Koumetio are expected to move up.Article continues below Two more January signings, Stefan Bajcetic and Calum Scanlon, should feature prominently for the U18s this season, as should the likes of Oakley Cannonier, who made his return from injury in the first friendly of the summer, a 2-0 win over Birmingham at Kirkby on Wednesday. Ethan Ennis, meanwhile, is set to leave the club, with Manchester United likeliest to sign the 16-year-old attacking midfielder, who scored five times for Liverpool’s U18s last season. Ennis has also been attracting interest from Chelsea. Further reading Link copiedComments Read the full article

Liverpool ‘have bid accepted for Birmingham and England youngster Calum Scanlon’
Liverpool are reportedly close to signing Birmingham and England youth international Calum Scanlon after the Championship club accepted a bid for the 15-year-old.
The Reds are looking to strengthen their academy ranks and have identified Scanlon as a promising talent.
According to The Times, Birmingham have accepted an undisclosed offer, which thought to be around £500,000. The versatile youngster can play at left back or in midfield.
Liverpool have had a bid accepted for Birmingham and England youngster Calum Scanlon
Jurgen Klopp is looking to add the promising 15-year-old to the Reds’ academy set-up
The report says Birmingham have recently conducted an internal review of their approach to developing their young players and are considering remodelling their academy. However, Liverpool’s interest in Scanlon is said to predate that decision.
The Championship side sold Jude Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £25million in July and he has already broken into the Bundesliga side’s first team.
Bellingham, who only turned 17 in June, also made his England debut in November.
Birmingham sold Jude Bellingham, 17, to Borussia Dortmund in the summer and he has since gone on to make his senior England debut
Scanlon is another youngster from the midlands club who is considered to have a bright future.
He received his first international call-up when he was selected for England U15 for a friendly against the Republic of Ireland in December 2019.
His family are now considering whether a move to the Premier League champions would be the best move for his development.
Jurgen Klopp has shown his commitment in promoting academy players to the first team with Curtis Jones and Neco Williams both featuring in the league this season.
Caoimhin Kelleher was trusted to deputise for goalkeeper Alisson while he was injured at the start of December while defender Rhys Williams has stepped up in the absence of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
