To add my own experience - I learned most of my theology from my parents, who found good pastors who post online, theology and apologetics curriculums, and taught me to read the Bible for myself. The physical church I attend, while better than a lot of churches I've heard of (actually teaches apologetics from time to time, spend an hour on Bible study and while it's watered-down it IS better and more expository than just five minutes, or rephrasing the verses, etc) I YEARN to be able to give this youth group (which is huge btw - like two hundred students) something better, or at least the option. God has given me a heart to help the youth and they do need it. There's little to no discussion for people to even hear more than the viewpoint of whoever is speaking at that time.

Getting into ministry is whole other problem, too - I've struggled very hard to get into service in any capacity, much less a teaching/discussion leader type role.

I spoke to multiple members of the youth leadership staff asking for ways to serve, if I could maybe help teach a class, anything - and they all just said 'no, you aren't ready' or 'other students might resent a peer being more knowledgeable and trying to teach them' or even 'well you need to learn stuff yourself, you don't want to miss the preaching just because you're busy serving' like sir, I go to SEVEN different sermons per week, not counting home Bible study. I asked around for other ways and places to serve.

About the only way students are encouraged to serve seems to be youth band. There was once a youth-wide recruitment announcement for tech team, and when I went to go join, I was put on emergency fill-in duty because they already had everyone they needed! Six months passed and I was not once asked to help.

I took a 'find your place to serve!' class and at the end my counselor said yeah, you'd do great in youth! But he had no power to actually get me there! He wanted to focus on getting me to serve in other places to build up my credibility. (By his program I was graduated by the time I'd get anywhere near the youth.) In the end it took me three years and a request for volunteers from a para-church organization our church hosts for me to get into ANY kind of service, ANYWHERE, where I could be remotely useful. Now I'm doing lights and stuff on the (not youth) tech team and apparently that whole time they'd been understaffed!!

Young, growing Christians not only have a desire for theology, apologetics, history - any context whatsoever for their religion - we also have a desire to serve Christ, whether that's by a calling to missions, teaching, preaching, spreading the word in a home country, encouragment and exhortation, etc - everyone has their gifts! We can't sit passive and absorb info all the time! We are told to seek knowledge, we are hungry for it - and then we want to share it!

I think the only thing a youth group needs to do is give students this knowledge through human interaction. Reading the Bible is great, but having someone teach it is so much easier and is often a stepping-stone to reading the Bible! Online sermons and flashy videos are nice, but what if I want something interactive? What if I want to learn by human contact and relationships the way we were designed to??

We have the reverse problem of 1 Corinthians 3:1-2, where students are longing for solid food, but we are only fed milk.

In my early twenties I know more theology than most men in the churches I've attended who are twice my age. This isn't a boast, I am no scholar. I say this in abject horror and despair.
