“This is Queen’s least good non-soundtrack album (respectfully ignoring Made in Heaven). It’s the one usually dismissed or derided by critics. And it’s understandable. Buoyed by the success of Another One Bites the Dust, featuring John Deacon’s grungy-funk bassline and semi-spoken word (ie ‘rap’) lyrics, as well as their second no 1 hit single collaboration with David Bowie, the phenomenal Under Pressure, Queen thought they’d go ‘disco’. But this is not a disco album by any stretch of the imagination, it’s early 80s pop-synths, taut funk-bass, occasional brass and drum-machines. . Ever since their third album, Sheer Heart Attack, Queen have delivered a wide range of musical styles on their albums, even if (mostly) their singles conformed to their heavy-glam-prog-rock oeuvre. So no true fan (ie someone who bought the albums not just heard the singles on the radio) should be all that surprised by Queen chancing it in this direction. Rather than an aberration I see Hot Space as having lineage and later influence. Body Language is the leaner (more naked) version of Get Down, Make Love from News of the World, Dancer is a rewrite of Fight From The Inside, Calling All Girls is a Roger Taylor classic in line with I’m In Love With My Car, Back Chat sees its echoes in The Miracle’s Invisible Man and Cool Cat is the full falsetto version of some of Deacon’s lighter songs like Who Needs You. Then there’s the more typical Queen song, A for effort from Brian May for Las Palabras de Amor which is the Argentinian counterpoint to his Japanese-honouring Teo Torriatte from A Day At The Races. . Where I think they went wrong with this album is in the song sequence, in particular starting with the somewhat turgid Staying Power which, despite the lovely horn arrangement, you really do need stating power to enjoy all 4 minutes of it. I have made an 86.4% improvement to the album by changing its order, but due to IG space restrictions you’ll have to go to my blog to read what this is. Queen’s 1982 album Hot Space takes the sound in a very different direction, which is a little jarring at first, but grows on you quickly. There’s a bit of a funky vibe, but it’s far more driven by the 80s new wave synth and glam sounds than anything else, and it’s just so upbeat. At times it feels like the score to a buddy cop movie, and that’s fantastic best advice I can give is to approach it without expectation, and really experience it as a stand-alone. Highlight tracks include Staying Power, Back Chat, Calling All Girls, Las Palabras De Amor, and Under Pressure (with David Bowie). Available on iTunes and Spotify. A little more before we start!

Just a small town gal trying to live and raise my kids in a suburban world. Decided it was time to talk about it. Real life. Real world. Straight out of my mouth like it is.

I do have a tendency to have a problem with that. Just saying things that fly out of my mouth and then hearing them afterwards and going crap. Did I say that out loud? Or please good Lord tell me it was in me head. Tell me I’m now the only one???! It has to be a mom thing. Just vomiting 🤮Words and then wondering wtf to do?

I’m tell you gals. Own it. Just own it. You already said. No back down. Pick you head up and just look right at then like hell ya I 💯 meant that and the smile. They just won’t know what to do and in the end have to respect you for being real.

It’s all about being real. Too many fake people around. That’s a whole different story not worth even a mention. Just be real. Be you. You be you. No matter what.

I hope you enjoy my page. We will have fun, laugh, maybe cry a little. But it will be real.
