okay since you reblogged that "anonymously tell me why you follow me" post i think it's time for me to come clean. you followed me first and i was like "oh nice a new follower! i may or may not follow back at some point, idk" and then one day i took out my phone on my break at work and you were just. on my dash and listed in my notifs as a mutual. i dont know to this day if it was a misclick or a tumblr glitch or an act of divine intervention but regardless i'm glad it happened :-)
I like to look who's in my notes, and if it's a decently personal thing someone followed me for, then i end up stalking them to see if we can be friends, and I'm not sure exactly who wrote this ask (sorry!) but I absolutely love (/p) all my mutuals, so it definitely wasn't a misclick! (Btw I'd love to know who this is so you're welcome to dm me abt this:-) Unless you want to keep the mystery then all good!)

There is no reason for "Andor" to be as good or radical as it is, given that it is a Disney property, and it even sets itself apart as far as torture.
Lots of shows from the so-called Golden Age of Prestige Television made you root for horrible people due to how those shows were structured. If you wanted to see more "Breaking Bad," then Walter White had to keep doing horrible things. "Andor" does some of the same things: it effectively humanizes the fascist characters, really makes you empathize with them, and structurally even root for them to overcome adversity — such as Deedra Meero fighting against misogyny — but then it doesn't leave you with that because it's given you other characters to meet who experience the results of fascism, empire, and domination.
The torture scene in "Andor" a callback to the original "A New Hope" scene where protagonist Princess Leia is tortured offscreen.
For all of the shortcomings George Lucas has, politically and otherwise, your sympathies are always supposed to be with the rebels fighting against tyranny rather than the state agents torturing helpless people for information. The creators of "Andor" carried that forward as well.
(Scene from S1E9 "Nobody's Listening!")

DR. GORST:
Oh, the restraints are nothing to be feared. It's much safer for you to be tethered as we engage. There's nothing intrinsically physical about this process, but we've had some early trails that were a bit chaotic. There's an Outer Rim moon called Dizon Fray. There was a sentient species there. Quite unusual. Extremely hostile to the concept of an Imperial refueling center that was being planned. I say "was" because they created such a stir that the local commanders were granted permission to use any means necessary, and, um, well.. What's important for our purposes here today is that the massacre of the Dizonites was broadcast and recorded as proof of mission. They make a sound when the die. A sort of choral, agonized pleading. It's quite unlike anything anyone has ever heard before. There were three communications officers monitoring the documentation, and they were found hours later huddled together in various states of emotional distress, in a crawl space beneath the ship's bridge. We've taken the recordings and modified them slightly. Layering, adjusting. And we found a section of what we believe are primarily... children, which has it's own particular effect. Doesn't take long. It won't feel that way to you, inside. Let me know when you're willing to cooperate. Oh, and if you're having difficulty speaking, just shake your head from side to side.
DEDRA MEERO:
You'll want to be sure of that, Bix, that you're cooperating fully. It's repeat listenings that cause the most damage.
A show like "24" with its protagonist Jack Bauer in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks was almost cartoonish in its propaganda repeatedly showing torture to be necessary, moral, and effective.
Even in "Andor," something unrealistic about it is that the character Bix Caleen actually does know something that she ultimately can (and does) reveal to her torturers. Writing conventions are such that things we're watching are supposed to have stakes, and each scene is supposed to matter. Even when characters are suffering, we want them to have agency such as holding some information back. Bix correctly points out that it doesn't matter what she says since they're not going to believe her and keep torturing her anyway, and it would have been nice if that's all it had been. Eventually, everyone who is tortured tells the person hurting them what they want to hear in the hopes it will make them stop, but that doesn't make what they're saying useful.
"Rogue One" gets a little closer in that the tortured character, Imperial defector Bodhi Rook, is just trying to tell the rebel partisans something truthfully from the start, but he isn't believed until subjected to sci-fi magic probing from a psychic species. That film is a mess overall and it's a miracle it came out as good as it did, but it is one of the few fictional works to portray torture as being completely meaningless in terms of gathering information.
In typical fiction rules, when our protagonist is engaging in torture and threats against a person's life, the point is that it's effective, and they're cowards who will ultimately reveal the critical information. Whereas when our protagonist is the one being tortured, the point is that they are brave and will resist revealing the critical information.
We have been trained to think that the truth is less dramatically satisfying: that torture is an expression of power and domination. It's violence by those who can against those who are helpless. Torture doesn't help gather reliable information unless the person asking the questions already knows all of the answers.
We need more of that in fiction. Not torture with a pornographic eye or meant for entertainment like so many horror films were for that period in the mid-Aughts but "torture as it is," with all sympathy and full point of view for the people being harmed, with most examples being people who know nothing or know nothing useful.
this graph from Jacob Geller's new video depicting the ratio of good characters torturing people on screen to bad characters torturing people on screen within the Call of Duty series is driving me crazy

Los Angeles (Day 3)
The weather is still being rather British, but I was in no mood to be held at bay by mere rain! However, I didn’t think heading to LA itself would be worthwhile in current conditions – even more so when I saw a tornado had passed through part of downtown.
Instead, I headed north into the nearby mountains; Mark had told me about a ski resort that he’s frequented which sits behind them, so I decided to take a drive around the mountains and through Angeles National Forest with the intention of getting some great views. While I did, in retrospect my clockwise approach was the wrong way to go, as the roads eventually became impassable in a normal city car and I was forced to turn back. I knew I would have reached the resort sooner if I’d gone the other way, but I chose my route because it got me into the mountains quicker.
Not that I’d call it a wasted trip; I was treated to verdant valleys, misty mountains, and even snowy surroundings further up! As the rain turned to snow, the road signs gradually became more ominous, and although I would have loved to complete my circuit through the mountains, I channelled my inner Sid (“no thankth, I choothe life!”) and turned around. I clearly didn’t do sufficient research before setting off, but I partly blame that on the weather disrupting my original plans.
Upon returning to sea level, I tried another American staple for lunch - Olive Garden, which specializes in Italian food, namely pasta. I had the nicest meal of my Cali trip thus far: chicken & gnocchi soup followed by shrimp Alfredo, accompanied by their famous breadsticks – which are more like fully fledged loaves!
I was running out of gas a little after such a hearty meal, and it was still rainy, so I returned to base and had a delicious nap before spending the rest of the evening chilling with Mark and DeEdra. I had some of DeEdra’s own homemade chicken soup for dinner, which for the record knocked my Olive Garden one out of the park.
#the Gap of Rohan was closed#the road goes ever on and on#I suggest you take the shortcut#are you threatening me?#chicken soup for the sole Brit#OG recipe#500

Islamic Groups Keep ‘Punking’ the FBI
Note: Originally published on Creeping Sharia April 4, 2009
And the CIA, DHS, immigration, the Democrats, Republicans, the U.S. Navy, Special Forces (see al-Amriki), judges, juries, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, gays, women…wait, who don’t Islamists punk with their taqiyya and stealth jihad? From the Islamist Watch blog.
Islamist Groups Keep 'Punking' the FBI
by David J. Rusin
A coalition of Muslim groups, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), has threatened to suspend outreach efforts with the FBI following news of the agency planting informants in California mosques. That the man under investigation has been charged with a host of crimes and allegedly was recorded discussing jihad is apparently irrelevant. According to the coalition, the FBI has lost the trust of Muslims by seeding mosques with “agents provocateurs.”
Putting aside the irony that CAIR might cut off the FBI after the FBI cut off CAIR, these events raise a vital question: to what degree have prominent Muslim groups assisted the FBI in keeping America safe? Indeed, history shows that CAIR has been less of a help than a hindrance.
A 2006 article by Daniel Pipes and Sharon Chadha demonstrates how “CAIR encourages law enforcement in its work — so long as it does not involve counterterrorism.” The authors quote the head of CAIR’s New York office complaining that the FBI is “pursuing suspects much more actively than it is searching for community partners.” Pipes and Chadha also recall CAIR’s “Muslim community safety kit” from 2003, which advised Muslims: “You have no obligation to talk to the FBI. … You do not have to permit them to enter your home. … Always have an attorney present when answering questions.” Then there is this nugget:
CAIR discourages Americans from improving their counterterrorism skills. Deedra Abboud, CAIR’s Arizona director, approves of police learning the Arabic language if that lowers the chances of cultural and linguistic misunderstandings. “However, if they’re learning it in order to better fight terrorism, that concerns me. Only because that assumes that the only fighting we have to do is among Arabic speakers.”
In addition to highlighting how CAIR uses its “sensitivity training” to foster hesitancy among security officials, Frank Gaffney points out another damning example: a document in which a local CAIR leader “describes how she limited the scope of a meeting FBI agents had with a Muslim doctor. She coached the latter to withhold information from FBI agents: ‘I advised him specifically not to address any questions relating to violence or terrorism.'”
Of course, CAIR’s uncooperative history pales in comparison to that of Abdul Alim Musa, a prominent imam in Washington, DC. Known for praising terrorists during an interview with Sean Hannity, Musa is also famous for a 2007 sermon entitled “How to Punk the FBI,” available online in separate parts, in which he refers to federal agents as “sissies” and instructs Muslims on “such ‘counter-harassment techniques’ as asking an interrogating agent if his mother bought him his shirt.” Furthermore, he accuses the FBI of causing strokes to silence black Muslim leaders.
At the time of that sermon and up until very recently, Musa sat on the governing body of the Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA) — one of the coalition members threatening to cut off contact with the FBI for allegedly disrespecting Muslims.
Frank Gaffney says it best: with friends like these, the FBI needs no enemies. ~end
A coalition of American Muslim groups the media ignores has issued a statement of its own commending the FBI. Here
We, the undersigned American Muslims, have long known the true character of CAIR and its allies. Therefore:
We observe that they denounce “terrorism” in general terms but not the specific actions of Islamist groups like Hamas or Hezbollah. They denounce violence but not the ideologies behind it.
We observe their commitment to radical aims, their attempts to chill free speech by calling critics of radical Islam “Islamophobes,” and their false, ugly accusations against moderate American Muslims who disagree with their agenda.
We reject any claim that CAIR and its supporters are legitimate civil liberties advocates or appropriate partners between the U.S. government and American Muslims.
We congratulate the FBI for adopting a firmer attitude toward CAIR, as a defense of Americans of all faiths from the menace of radical Islam, including Muslims of all backgrounds – Sunni, Shia, Sufi, secular, etc.
We call on the U.S. Department of Justice to affirm and continue this decision.
We call on the entire United States government to follow suit in rejecting relations with the Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Instead, the media darlings like CAIR, and many of the groups signing the statement against the FBI, are Muslim Brotherhood subsidiaries.
AMT is an umbrella organization that includes American Muslim Alliance (AMA), American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA), MAS-Freedom, Muslim Student Association-National (MSA-N), Muslim Ummah of North America (MUNA), and United Muslims of America (UMA). Its observer organizations include the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) and the Islamic Educational Center of Orange County (IEC). Source
