🎶 MUSICAL NOTES — what type of music does your oc like? do they listen to music very often? 💯 HUNDRED POINTS SYMBOL — share three random facts about your oc that others may not know. 💤 SLEEPING SIGN — is your oc a light sleeper or a heavy sleeper? how are their sleeping habits?

🎶 - she likes sludge metal, particularly when it hails from the south. bands like eyehategod, acid bath, and soilent green. she likes some country music, mostly old, 1960s country. that's the type she was raised on: hank williams, tammy wynette, loretta lynn, johnny cash. she also likes folk music, especially murder ballads.

💯- 1. she cannot sing to save her life. calista had been an excellent singer, a classically trained soprano. when cricket takes her place, she has to turn down a lot of auditions and offers for musical roles. 2. she definitely has ptsd from the years and years of abuse inflicted on her by her father-- she has vivid nightmares, flashbacks, and panic attacks if something reminds her of him. a random man wearing the same aftershave he had, for example, will send her reeling. but she's never been to a psychologist or diagnosed with anything. 3. she's got lots of homemade tattoos (stick n pokes) scattered all over her legs, she does them herself, and they're not very well done at all. it's something to pass the time when she's wide awake at three am and bored to pieces, having already cleaned every inch of her home and taken apart every remote control and given up on putting them back together.

💤- when she does sleep, she's crashing. so she can sleep for days at a time, usually up to a full week. and it's a very heavy sleep. like a coma. she usually avoids this, though, meth keeps her up for days and days on end.

Announcement!

I am publishing another novel under my pseudonym, Calista Lynne, and I am so excited.

When I was 16, I wrote a novel about asexual teenagers. It was magical and sweet and very obviously written by a child. Nevertheless, it was published by Harmony Ink Press and I’ve had a difficult relationship with it ever since.

I grew up. I moved to a different country. I worked in all aspects of the publishing industry and theatre. I found myself, and now I’ve written another novel.

This next one guarantees more queerness and magic, but this time written by someone with two degrees and a lot more experience!

Books with Flowers on the Cover | Top Ten Tuesday

The topic this week is Books with Nature on the Cover! Spring is finally in full swing! The topic this week was more generally about nature but I wanted to focus on flowers. Flowers just feel like the quintessential spring thing. I realized while picking books that they’re not AS common as I thought they were on covers and that roses far out number any other represented flower. Roses are tired…

About halfway through the month and I’ve managed to wrap up my March read for @bookbandit‘s #tbrbusterchallenge, This month’s read was We Awaken by Calista Lynne.

Basically this book was about a girl, Victoria who had lost her father in a car accident, which also left her brother in a coma. While in his coma, he sends Ashlinn, a metaphysical being who gives pleasant dreams to people, to deliver messages to Victoria in her sleep. Victoria is drawn to Ashlinn and builds relationship with her, but she has to question whether being with a girl she can only see in her dreams can last.

I think this book had a lot of potential and an interesting idea, but very poor execution and development. It was too short, the characters too flat and uninteresting, and the conflict didn't nearly have the right amount of time to linger, build, and actually feel like a threat. The closest thing this book has to an antagonist pops up in one chapter and then that's all we see from her. And yes, the relationship is very instalove and comes out of  nowhere. If anything, we have no idea why Ashlinn finds Victoria appealing or even why she started talking to her brother in the first place. It just happened, and we're just supposed to believe that's enough reason. Also, I'm so tired of best friend characters that are just assholes in disguise and, when they do get called out for their behavior, their apologies seem so insincere. Victoria’s best friend, Ellie, didn't even try to understand where Victoria is coming from concerning her asexuality and it reads as if she doesn't even want to make an attempt. That and she seriously needed to understand boundaries and ugh, I could rant on about this character but it's really not worth the effort.

While the story itself wasn't very engaging, i have to say this is probably one of the better books that have asexual representation in them. We have two asexual characters, with their relationship being the focus of the book, and honestly I have RARELY seen two asexuals in a relationship in any media. Being asexual myself, I really appreciated Victoria trying to navigate her identity as an asexual person and even bringing up concerns and questions I had when I was figuring that part out of myself. The book does go out of its way to explain asexual relationships and the various nonsexual ways that people can be intimate with each other. The representation was the only reason I gave this book more than one star on Storygraph and I desperately wish it had the chance to be in a better story. 

And that wraps up this month’s book. I’m probably going to create a poll y’all can vote on to decide next month’s read sometime this weekend so keep a look out for that!

Sooo, after seeing a tumblr post about it and getting real interested i went ahead and ordered We Awaken by Calista Lynne. I literally just opened the package, so I didn’t have time to start reading yet (also I have to finish my paper for university so I guess reading fun stuff will start in April...) but I’m super excited!!!

The cover is just magical, I love it <3 also put the ... umm...back text?? (What do you call that in English? In german it’s Klappentext, but anyway) so you can get an impression on what it’s about. Go get a copy, it’s like 15dollars.

I mainly bought it bc girls! And also bc asexuality!! (Tho im not asexual myself, i still felt like I wanted to read a story with asexual protagonists bc I just never have and it sounds real cool, you know, get new perspectives, expand my horizon.)

WE AWAKEN by Calista Lynne I finally got around to reading this, I’ve been looking at it for about a year now probably but I had been on the fence because 1. It’s pretty expensive for a book that’s less than 200 pages and 2. I’ve seen a lot of bad reviews for it But honestly I thought it was a cute little story, some things were over explained occasionally, and I was able to predict the ending, but I still enjoyed this book
