“Cosmic Rodeo Queen: A Journey to the Valley of Dreams” Today felt like the kind of day only the stars could choreograph. The kind where every detail hums with a little extra magic. I caught a @lyft ride in a sleek electric Kia EV6, the AC set perfectly to 69°, gliding across the butter-smooth California freeways toward something secret — something sacred — a recording studio hidden between…

First visit of the 2024-2025 season at Bombay Beach along the Salton Sea, California.
A few new photos of some new art installations and old favorites on a nice sunny day spent minus 227 feet below sea level.

The Bureau of Land Management oversees an astonishing 245 million acres. "How on earth had I never heard of these lands?" asks Josh Jackson.
This week, Longreads shares an excerpt from Jackson's new book, THE ENDURING WILD: A JOURNEY INTO CALIFORNIA'S PUBLIC LANDS, out on June 24 from Berkeley publisher Heyday. In the book, Jackson sets off to explore California's overlooked wilderness. Our excerpt zooms in on Jackson's time in Bodie Hills in the Eastern Sierra, and he discusses the tragic legacy of gold mining in the state.
For many gold mining corporations, their practices can be distilled into a simple formula, as evidenced by a century and a half of environmental destruction and abandoned mines across the West: Find the mineral, devastate the landscape, take the money, and then abandon the site once profits inevitably dwindle.”
When viewed from the perspective of today, the harsh reality of boom-and-bust gold mining becomes clear: The brief boom benefited only a fortunate few. The bust was for everyone else.

Incredible rock formation on the side of Hwy 180 in Kings Canyon National Park, California.
This beautiful chevron pattern is just past Boyden Cave, near where the tours start. The rangers at the little gift shop there pointed it out to us. We wouldn't have known to look for it otherwise!

Road tripping through California. Stayed with a friend for two days out of the week trip and made them this in the first few days. Finished it up while at the beach. It was my first time going to the beach in years despite living pretty close… so much fun and I’ll always recommend crocheting in public. I forgot the pattern name but it’s my second time making it and it’s really well-designed.

Thinking about Matt and Neil going on their own country tour together during Matt's last year spring break where Matt has a big signing bonus for his team.
Matt: "Hey Andrew, you know how you and Neil have those cute couple road trips during school breaks?" Andrew: "We're not-"
Matt: "So I'm taking him this time and we're going to have our own cute couple road trip. Bye!"
What follows is Matt and Neil's cross country trip trying out all these fancy food places because Neil's relationship with food is still weird and Matt wants Neil to enjoy nice things.
