Weights for Calibrating Balances: Why Is This Necessary?
Be it factories, large industries, small companies, or any other manufacturing plant, mixing the ingredients in the right quantities is crucial for producing quality goods. In laboratories, it becomes even more important. Imagine creating a 5 mg solution. There is no space for a mistake because it can harm someone’s health and your staff.
There are different kinds of balances and weights in labs. This is because each weight goes through a lot of handling through the daily routine and loses some part of it.
Thus, calibration becomes important in laboratories, and calibration weights are used to calibrate them. This blog will help you learn the importance of calibration weights in Los Angeles and how they are non-disposable during weight calibration.
Biotechnical Services Inc. is known for weight calibration in several parts of California. For accurate calibration, contact us today!
Why Do Balances and Weights Need Calibration?
Scales and weights are used to measure ingredients and chemicals in laboratories. Various mixtures and ingredients are measured, and their quantities are usually tiny, such as a 1 ml solution for an injection or a 0.5 mg tablet.
Thus, laboratories use tiny weights for measurement.
If you have witnessed weights, you will agree that they wear off with time. The daily usage and hazardous environments result in them losing weight over time.
If a 20 kg weight loses 10 grams, it is negligible, but a 1 mg weight can’t afford to lose any of it.
First, they are kept in highly safe environments and used with great care but keeping them intact over time is impossible.
Weight calibration measures the accuracy of different weights and determines whether they are fit for laboratory use. It is only possible with the help of balances.
Read on to learn the importance of standard balances.
What Is Balance Calibration?
Balance calibration is comparing actual weights against standard weights to determine the difference. It is a quantitative comparison to ascertain the true value of weights against the standard ones.
The process of weights calibration requires a weighing scale, standard balances, and actual weights that you use in your laboratory.
What Role Do Weights Play in Calibration?
The entire process of calibration depends on standard weights. Since the actual weights are calibrated against standard weights, the balances are required to be accurate. Unless they are accurate themselves, the entire process of calibration is useless. When inaccurate balances are used, the results can be disastrous as these small weights are of the greatest significance, and ignorance on this front can lead to dangerous consequences.
Experienced calibration laboratories, such as Biotechnical Services Inc., perform weight calibration. It is the responsibility of the team to ensure that they use only authorized standard weights for calibration.
Also, it lies on the shoulders of laboratories to ensure they have an experienced calibration laboratory team onboard to perform regular weight calibration.
Benefits of Balance Calibration
The process of weight calibration and using standard weights highlights the importance of the process, but here are certain benefits that result from the process.
Cost Saving
Cost saving is the first and foremost benefit of using calibrated balances. You cannot use faulty balances as they render products useless and require change. It results in the redundancy of processes and the application of resources. Accurate balances ensure quality production and save costs.
Compliance
Every laboratory, whether it is a chemical lab or a testing lab, must adhere to the compliance regulations set by authorized regulatory bodies. Using weights for balance calibration regularly is also one of them. Therefore, every laboratory must undergo balance and scale calibration to avoid violating the rules and facing legal and regulatory consequences.
Reliability
Daily, balances weigh hundreds of weights. So how do you know that the weights you read are accurate? Accurate balances give you confidence so you can rely on the measurements with certainty. Besides, the weights’ reliability and accuracy are paramount in laboratories.
Identification of Defective and Aging Balances
It is only through the help of calibration weights that any defective and aging weights can be identified. Thus, all laboratories must undergo balance calibration using calibration weights in Los Angeles so timely action can be taken.
How Often Should You Calibrate?
It is a common question that must be bugging your mind, as well as how often you should calibrate your balances.
The general answer is that you should calibrate your balances once a year. The time of once a year is considered standard frequency.
But one must not assume that the fact always holds true. The frequency of calibration is defined by the probability of the balances going wrong and what their impact can be. For example, a laboratory that does not use weights above 1 kg is not required to calibrate its bulky weights often. But if the same laboratory uses smaller weights and the laboratory is a Biotech, pharmaceutical, or hospital lab, then the professional calibration lab must determine the calibration frequency.
Biotechnical Services Inc. is an experienced laboratory specializing in understanding your business and assessing your calibration needs so you are always on top.
What if Balances are Inaccurate?
If balances are inaccurate, they are changed as the adjustment is impossible. But there are tolerance limits. Balances can be used in the future if the differences are within tolerance limits.

scandalous star: gary cooper -an analysis
“I don’t like to see exaggerated airs and exploding egos in people who are already established. No player ever rises to prominence solely on talent. They’re molded by forces other than themselves. They should remember this – and at least twice a week drop to their knees and thank Providence for elevating them from cow ranches, dime store ribbon counters and bookkeeping desks. ” - Gary Cooper
He didn’t say much, but when he did, it carried a lot of weight. He was the archetypal hero of the Old West; the quintessential masculine ideal of the stoic and “strong silent type” that most Taurus men are. But for famously laconic Gary Cooper, his good looks and earnest, haunted eyes for decades made him the quintessential lonely American of motion pictures. He was a more equanimous, human protagonist versus boisterous, bigger-than-life Hollywood supermen. He was renowned for his quiet, understated acting style and his individualistic, emotionally restrained, but at times intense screen persona, which was particularly well suited to the many Westerns he made. He was a man’s man...as well as a ladies’ man. Cooper became a hero to many, even as he developed a reputation as one of the most notorious philanderers in Hollywood. Privately a debonair ladykiller with a taste for high society, he crafted an image as just the opposite from his prototype cowboy image he materfully portrayed on the silver screen. He was insatiable, before and during his marriage. How did he reconcile his moral righteousness onscreen (Taurus sun) with his philandering offscreen (Sagittarius moon)? That was the work of the fixers, gossip magazines, and the studio system at large, which ensured that Cooper was never caught, never denounced, and held up as a paragon of American values.
Gary Cooper, according to astrotheme, was a Taurus sun and Sagittarius moon. He was born Frank James Cooper in Helena, Montana, the second son of an English farmer from Bedfordshire, who later became an American lawyer and judge, Charles Henry Cooper (1865-1946), and Kent-born Alice (née Brazier) Cooper (1873-1967). As a child, he met a freed slave woman named Mary Fields, otherwise known as Stagecoach Mary, and so awed by her was she that he later wrote an account of his memories of her in Ebony magazine. His mother hoped for their two sons to receive a better education than that available in Montana and arranged for the boys to attend Dunstable Grammar School in Bedfordshire, England between 1910 and 1913. Upon the outbreak of World War I, Cooper’s mother brought her sons home and enrolled them in a Bozeman, Montana, high school. Upon graduation, he eventually matriculated at Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA, where he attempted to nurture a passion for drawing - until a serious car accident ended his college days in the summer of 1920. He would recover from his severely injured hip through an odd but painful therapy, horseback riding.
When his father retired from the bench and moved his mother to Los Angeles, Cooper gave up agriculture classes to try his hand as a Hollywood extra. Cooper played an extra in a handful of silent films before arriving on the set of The Winning of Barbara Worth in 1926. The actor cast as the second male lead didn’t show, and someone shoved Cooper into the part. He appeared with Clara Bow (who soon became one of his conquests) in her star-making film It, but it was his appearance in another Bow vehicle Wings, released later that same year, truly launched his career. He plays a World War I flying cadet, and although his screentime was still relatively short, there was one scene — an extended close-up shot, the light streaming in from outside — in which he looked gorgeous. In 1929, he filmed The Wolf Song with Lupe Vélez. He soon had an affair with Velez, who purportedly claimed that Cooper “has the biggest organ in Hollywood but not the ass to push it in well.” For more on their relationship, read my star analysis on Lupe.
Cooper filmed The Virginian — his first real “talkie,” and the film was a major hit and cemented the foundation of Cooper’s image. His ability to project elements of his own personality onto the characters he portrayed, to appear natural and authentic in his roles, and to underplay and deliver restrained performances calibrated for the camera and the screen helped make him a cinematic success, often lauded by those he worked with. However, his good looks and charisma made him a success with women, whether he worked with them or not. Over the next few years, Cooper was paired with the most gorgeous and promising female stars in Hollywood —with Carole Lombard in I Take This Woman (whom he slept with), Claudette Colbert in His Woman (whom he allegedly slept with), Marlene Dietrich in Morocco and Desire (who he famously slept with more than once), and Joan Blondell in Make Me a Star (who he allegedly slept with). In 1932, Cooper and his Paramount “rival,” Cary Grant, were cast against Tallulah Bankhead in Devil and the Deep (1932). Like Lupe Velez, Bankhead was a loose cannon, with most famous quote being:
“The only reason I went to Hollywood was to fuck that divine Gary Cooper.”
Amidst all his public and private action, Cooper began courting Veronica “Rocky” Balfe, a starlet who went by the stage name of Sandra Shaw. She was also best known as the blonde dropped by King Kong. The two were wed in late 1933. Balfe retired from the screen to become a wife and mother, with her giving birth to their only child, Maria, in 1937. Cooper portrayed a new type of hero—a champion of the common man—in films like Mr. Deeds Goes To Washington and 1941′s Sergeant York (which won him his first of two Best Actor Oscars). Cooper met Ernest Hemingway at Sun Valley in October 1940 and they were friends for the rest of his life. He co-starred with Ingrid Bergman (with whom he had a year-long affair with) in a the film adaptation of Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls. He kept starring in more films and bedding his female co-stars until he got more than he bargained for when he made The Fountainhead. Naturally, the 47-year-old Cooper had an affair with his co-star, the 21-year-old Patricia Neal. However, this time things got crazy: Neal wound up pregnant with Cooper’s child. He insisted she have an abortion. When Cooper’s long-suffering wife found out about the relationship, she sent a telegram demanding he end it. This didn’t work; he also confessed that he was in love with Neal, and continued to see her. Cooper and his wife legally separated in May of 1951. Cooper’s daughter Maria, by then in her early teens, famously spat on Neal in public. Neal later claimed that Cooper hit her after she went on a date with Kirk Douglas. Neal ended their relationship in late December 1951. Amid all this drama, Cooper starred in what is now regarded as his defining role: the beleaguered sheriff in High Noon, which won him his second Best Actor Oscar. In later life, he became involved in a relationship with the costume designer Irene, and was, according to Irene, "the only man she ever loved".
Maybe all his previous actions had an affect on him because Cooper converted to Catholicism in 1958, and reconciled with his wife and daughter. Also, he began starring in films that centered around searching for redemption, such as Friendly Persuasion (1956) and Man of the West (1958). In 1960, Cooper fell ill with prostate cancer, which quickly spread to his colon, lungs, and bones; he died of it shortly after his 60th birthday in 1961. A year after his death, Irene committed suicide by jumping from the 11th floor of the Knickerbocker Hotel, after telling Doris Day of her grief over Cooper's death. Regardless of his philandering, regardless of the arduous work of his studio’s publicity departments, there was something plaintive, almost childlike, maybe even innocent about Cooper, so he can easily be forgiven his sins. He acted out what mattered to millions of people, and that act made him a star beyond measure.
Next, I’ll focus on his former paramour Lupe Velez’s arch nemesis. A woman who happened to be wife of MGM art director Cedric Gibbons (Gary Cooper’s wife Rocky’s uncle). She was another pioneer of Mexican cinema who was arguably the first Latina to successfully crossover to Anglo audiences: Leo Dolores del Río.

Overall personality snapshot: He was torn between an instinct to roam free and a determination to find security and make a solid, lasting contribution to the world. As he repeatedly changed horses in search of both ultimate certainties and high-spirited adventure at the same time, he could find himself deeply divided and uncertain. He sought to earth the fire from heaven and put it to work, but he found all too often that it would not let him rest. In his search for stability and security, he became a farmer and was immediately confronted with the changing seasons. He embraced the solid certainties of geology and are hit by an earthquake. He liked to feel the solid earth move. He sought certitude and permanence, yet his endless inquiries constantly confounded yesterday’s certainties. When he got his own uncertainties together (by accepting he wanted the best of both the changing and the unchanging worlds), he could have been a brilliant teacher, conversationalist, counselor, entertainer, wit, creative artist or entrepreneur – in fact he could have been anything he wanted. Once focused, he could be a human dynamo, and wonderfully humorous, witty and entertaining with it. As he discovered, his quest for solid material certainties did not make a happy bedfellow for his yearning for excitement and larger religious and spiritual understanding. In one way or another, be it through philosophy and the spiritual quest or through writing, music or art, he needed to put together and formulate a total vision of the universe which is based on unassailable facts yet satisfying to his idealism.
Constantly seeking, he was a natural agnostic, applying the criteria of science to counter woolly speculations, yet at the same time highly skeptical of the limited and statistical pronouncements of unthinking science. The danger, if he did not marry these elements within him, is that he would swing from one to the other and undermine the virtues of both. A restless changing of jobs, careers, partners, visions or aspirations left him drunk with his own spinning. When he deliberately tried to remain sober and commonsensical, it seemed to make matters worse for there was something of the gambler in him. This all-or-nothing streak can temporarily overcome your natural caution and enable you to burn your bridges (though you will usually ensure there is something tucked away for a rainy day). He felt an impulsive need to do things on a grand scale, to live with commitment, to feast on the world, and to understand what it was to be alive in all possible ways. He seemed to be called both to explore the reaches of the imagination and to build secure foundations. He brought far-reaching visions into manifestation, and these visions injected his conservative desire for stability and security with flair and colour. His vision of tomorrow and the larger world gave spice to any project he undertook. He saw endless possibilities and wanted to make them real. In this he could be the natural entrepreneur who saw economic opportunities at every turn, an inspiring counselor and teacher, and a stimulating companion whatever he did.
His well-shaped body displayed a warm attractiveness and ripeness. In his later years, he may have needed to watch the tendency to gain weight too easily. His strong broad shoulders supported a very large neck size. His most outstanding feature was his eyes and his gentle smile and voice. He was big-boned. He enjoyed dressing well, preferring soft colours. He was practical, steady and patient, but he could be inflexible in his views. One thing he did have was plenty of common sense and good powers of concentration, although he tended to think that purely abstract thought was a waste of time. His thought processes weren’t as quick as others, but his decisions were made with a lot of thought behind them. He also had the welcome ability to bring people together. He needed to be able to show his originality and independence in any job for complete satisfaction. His work should also satisfy his scientific bent and humanitarian leanings. He needed scope for his inventiveness, because he was able to bring a fresh view to any job. Ideally, his work should permit him to express the idealistic side to him character and allow him to help as many people as possible. He could be extremely efficient in the way that he tried to get maximum result out of minimum effort. He didn’t like extravagance and waste. He was a thoughtful and resourceful person, who was well-informed on many subjects. Success came gradually and as a result of hard work. Success and growth, for him, were expressed by material and financial achievements, bringing status and prestige.Worldly success was well within his reach, because he possessed all the necessary talents to gain power, influence and status. He was practical, determined and patient. When there were hitches in his plans, he simply worked around them. He knew where he was heading to, and had already figured out the best way to use his talents to reach his goals.
Although he could be fairly pessimistic about life in general, it didn’t put him off aiming for the top. He could be very single-minded about reaching his goals, and was prepared to put his career interests above his personal happiness. He was extremely aware of his own worth. He was prepared to work beyond the call of duty. His strong sense of ambition gave him a certain rigidity, arrogance and selfishness in the eyes of others. He belonged to a generation with fiery enthusiasm for new and innovative ideas and concepts. Rejecting the past and its mistakes, he sought new ideals and people to believe in. As a member of this generation, he felt restless and adventurous, and was attracted towards foreign people, places and cultures. As a member of the Gemini Neptune generation, his restless mind pushed him to explore new intellectual fields. He loved communication and the occult and was likely also fascinated by metaphysical phenomena and astrology. As a Gemini Plutonian, he was mentally restless and willing to examine and change old doctrines, ideas and ways of thinking. As a member of this generation, he showed an enormous amount of mental vitality, originality and perception. Traditional customs and taboos were examined and rejected for newer and more original ways of doing things. As opportunities with education expanded, he questioned more and learned more. As a member of this generation, having more than one occupation at a time would not have been unusual to him.
Love/sex life: His sexuality was a wonderful combination of sensuality and basic laziness. He let himself be carried along by his pleasure-seeking instincts, greeting every new experience with fresh eagerness and then slowly draining from that encounter all the joy it has to offer. This passive, easy-going approach to sex not only made for good technique, it also conceals the egocentric strength and stubbornness that was at the core of his erotic nature. People don’t realize that beneath all that luxurious hedonism he was always the person in control. He was a conservative lover for whom appearances were always important. There may have been occasions when his sensuality lured him into indiscretions but he was quick to cover his tracks and hide the evidence. The quiet practicality of his sexual nature served as a handy antidote for his Martian braggadocio. He knew that he was the best there is but he was willing to sit back and let the world find out the good news on its own. In his youth Cooper was endorsed by several female “experts” of the time (such as Clara Bow, Marlene Dietrich and Tallulah Bankhead) as Hollywood’s sexiest man. His soft spoken and manly sex appeal projected just as well on the screen. After marrying at age 32, Cooper’s sex life became somewhat more sedate though he never lost his ability to attract women.
minor asteroids and points:
North Node: Scorpio
Lilith: Scorpio
Vertex: Libra
Fortune: Capricorn
East Point: Taurus
His North Node in Scorpio dictated that he needed to be careful not to let the more emotional side of his personality overwhelm him. Instead, he should have set out to consciously develop his more practical abilities. His Lilith in Scorpio ensured that he was dangerously attracted to those women who seduced and conquered on a daily basis; who liked life intense and was judged for her sexuality and general vibe and learned early on how to deflect moral judgments. His type of women may have been tried in the court of public opinion but no way were they going to show up for the sentencing. His Vertex in Libra, 6th house dictated that he llonged for a union of souls that was based on a model of pure peace and justice. Images come to mind of a mythical life on Venus, the planet of love, where there is never a discordant beat between lovers, but rather, continual harmony even if played in the minor chords. Physical lust was certainly a necessary aspect of two beings eternally intertwined, but the platonic component far outweighed it in importance for him. He had an attitude of duty, obligation and sacrifice when it came to heartfelt interactions. The negative side was the tendency to become hypochondriacal or martyristic to get the love he so desperately wanted. There was a need for others to appreciate the sincerity of his intentions, to the daily tasks he executed in a conscientious and caring way and for others to know that his actions, no matter how routine they may seem, were based on devoted love. His Part of Fortune in Capricorn and Part of Spirit in Cancer dictated that his destiny lay in creating practical and long-lasting achievements. Success came through hard work, determination, responsibility and perseverance. Fulfillment came from observing his progress through life and seeing it take a form and structure that will outlive him. His soul’s purpose guided him towards building security in his life, both emotional and material. He felt spiritual connections and the spark of the divine within his home and family. East Point in Taurus dictated that he was more likely to identify with the need for pleasure (including the potential of liking himself) and comfort.
elemental dominance:
earth
fire
He was a practical, reliable man and could provide structure and protection. He was oriented toward practical experience and thought in terms of doing rather than thinking, feeling, or imagining. Could be materialistic, unimaginative, and resistant to change. But at his best, he provided the practical resources, analysis, and leadership to make dreams come true. He was dynamic and passionate, with strong leadership ability. He generated enormous warmth and vibrancy. He was exciting to be around, because he was genuinely enthusiastic and usually friendly. However, he could either be harnessed into helpful energy or flame up and cause destruction. Ultimately, he chose the latter. Confident and opinionated, he was fond of declarative statements such as “I will do this” or “It’s this way.” When out of control—usually because he was bored, or hadn’t been acknowledged—he was bossy, demanding, and even tyrannical. But at his best, his confidence and vision inspired others to conquer new territory in the world, in society, and in themselves.
modality dominance:
fixed
He liked the challenge of managing existing routines with ever more efficiency, rather than starting new enterprises or finding new ways of doing things. He likely had trouble delegating duties and had a very hard time seeing other points of view; he tried to implement the human need to create stability and order in the wake of change.
house dominants:
12th
9th
8th
He had great interest in the unconscious, and indulged in a lot of hidden and secret affairs. His life was defined by seclusion and escapism. He had a certain mysticism and hidden sensitivity, as well as an intense need for privacy. Traveling, whether physically across the globe, on a mental plane or expanding through study was a major theme in his life. He was not only concerned with learning facts, but also wanted to understand the connections formed between them and the philosophies and concepts they stood for. His conscience, as well as foreign travel, people and places was also of paramount importance in his life. He loved the totality of the human experience and embraced the whole cycle of human life, including birth, sex and death. His darker side, and the complexes and emotions that he preferred to keep hidden, even from himself was a theme throughout his life. His ability to undergo deep personal transformations and spiritual regeneration was also highlighted.
planet dominants:
Venus
Saturn
Sun
He was romantic, attractive and valued beauty, had an artistic instinct, and was sociable. He had an easy ability to create close personal relationships, for better or worse, and to form business partnerships. He believed in the fact that lessons in life were sometimes harsh, that structure and foundation was a great issue in his life, and he had to be taught through through experience what he needed in order to grow. He paid attention to limitations he had and had to learn the rules of the game in this physical reality. He tended to have a practical, prudent outlook. He also likely held rigid beliefs. He had vitality and creativity, as well as a strong ego and was authoritarian and powerful. He likely had strong leadership qualities, he definitely knew who he was, and he had tremendous will. He met challenges and believed in expanding his life.
sign dominants:
Taurus
Sagittarius
Capricorn
His stubbornness and determination kept his around for the long haul on any project or endeavour. He was incredibly patient, singular in his pursuit of goals, and determined to attain what he wanted. Although he lacked versatility, he compensated for it by enduring whatever he had to in order to get what he wanted. He enjoyed being surrounded by nice things. He liked fine art and music, and may have had considerable musical ability. He also had a talent for working with his hands—gardening, woodworking, and sculpting. He sought the truth, expressed it as he saw it—and didn’t care if anyone else agreed with him. He saw the large picture of any issue and couldn’t be bothered with the mundane details. He was always outspoken and likely couldn’t understand why other people weren’t as candid. After all, what was there to hide? He loved his freedom and chafed at any restrictions. He was a serious-minded person who often seemed aloof and tightly in control of his emotions and her personal domain. Even as a youngster, there was a mature air about him, as if he was born with a profound core that few outsiders ever see. He was easily impressed by outward signs of success, but was interested less in money than in the power that money represents. He was a true worker—industrious, efficient, and disciplined. His innate common sense gave her the ability to plan ahead and to work out practical ways of approaching goals. More often than not, he succeeded at whatever he set out to do. He possessed a quiet dignity that was unmistakable.

Actor Gary Cooper was born on May 7, 1901, in Helena, Montana. Spanning from the silent film era to the early 1960s, Academy Award-winning actor Gary Cooper built much of his career by playing strong, manly, distinctly American roles. The son of English parents who had settled in Montana, he was educated in England for a time. He also studied at Grinnell College in Iowa before heading to Los Angeles to work as an illustrator. When he had a hard time finding a job, Cooper worked as a film extra and landed some small parts. After his appearance in
The Winning of Barbara Worth
(1926), a western, Cooper's career began to take off. He starred opposite silent movie star Clara Bow in Children of Divorce (1927). Cooper also earned praise as the ranch foreman in
The Virginian
(1929), one of his early films with sound. Throughout the 1930s, he turned in a number of strong performances in such films as A Farewell to Arms (1934) with Helen Hayes and Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) directed by Frank Capra. Cooper received an Academy Award nomination for his work on the film. Cooper continued to excel on the big screen, tackling several real-life dramas. In Sergeant York (1941), the played a World War I hero and sharpshooter, which was based on the life story of Alvin York. Cooper earned a Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of York.
The next year, Cooper played one of baseball's greats, Lou Gehrig, in The Pride of the Yankees (1942). Again, he scored another Best Actor Academy Award nomination. Appearing in a film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls, Cooper starred opposite Ingrid Bergman in a drama set during the Spanish Civil War. This role garnered him a third Academy Award nomination. In 1952, Cooper took on what is known considered his signature role as Will Kane in High Noon. He appeared as a lawman who must face a deadly foe without any help from his own townspeople. The film won four Academy Awards, including a Best Actor win for Cooper. In addition to his excellent on-screen performances, Cooper became known for his alleged romances with several of his leading ladies, including Clara Bow and Patricia Neal. The affair with Neal, his co-star in 1949's The Fountainhead, reportedly occurred during his marriage to socialite Veronica Balfe with whom he had a daughter. Their marriage seemed to survive the scandal. By the late 1950s, Cooper's health was in decline. He made a few more films, such as Man of the West (1958), before dying of cancer on May 13, 1961. (x)

“It’s been a gentle start to the day,” Harry Lloyd says with a smile, speaking at a subdued volume while his six-month-old baby naps in the other room. We’re chatting on a Saturday afternoon, and Lloyd’s tousled hair is silhouetted against the sunlight streaming through the hotel room windows. It’s a warm day in Los Angeles, a stark contrast to the subzero chill that he braved for last month’s photo shoot in New York.
On screen, the English actor’s piercing gaze bespeaks a calculating persona, an agenda beneath the charm. Offscreen, there’s an unguarded, guileless ease to Lloyd’s manner—he’s thoughtful and genuinely engaged in the questions posed to him.
Lloyd is perhaps best-known for his portrayal of the unscrupulous, throne-obsessed Viserys Targaryen in HBO’s Game of Thrones. Since his character’s macabre demise, the 35-year-old has been plenty busy. Among other screen and stage projects, Lloyd played the classmate and confidante to Eddie Redmayne’s Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything; a brilliant (and womanizing) novelist in The Wife (Lloyd mentions that he’s thrilled for Glenn Close’s Oscar nomination); and an intelligence officer, opposite J.K. Simmons, in the Starz original series Counterpart. His latest undertakingthe reason he’s in LA—is the Marvel comics-based series, Legion. For the third and final season of the FX show, Lloyd will play the role of David Haller’s father and X-Men leader, Professor Charles Xavier. (In so doing, he joins the ranks of Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy, who portrayed Professor X in the film series.)
Our conversation starts with Counterpart, the sci-fi/espionage thriller. A Cold War experiment in East Germany has splintered the timeline, and two formerly identical worlds now exist in an uneasy and rapidly unraveling détente. Each character in the show has an “other” self—a counterpart on the other side—and crossovers between the two dimensions wreak geopolitical havoc. There are slick diplomats, hapless bureaucrats, a contract assassin—and at the center is Peter Quayle, the director of Strategy in the Office of Interchange, a sort of United Nations-meets-MI6 outfit.
The morally obtuse Quayle is not exactly a sympathetic figure, but Lloyd embodies the character with a subtlety that allows the vulnerability to seep through the cracks in the bravado. As Quayle’s carefully-calibrated life crumbles, you feel for him—a national security strategist who’s in way over his head, blind to the fact that his own wife is a mole. Those pale, elegant hands are not meant to be dirtied fumbling about dim halls and holding rooms—and that’s not even getting into the subplots within the plot twists.
Lloyd’s enthusiasm for the project is clear. He calls Counterpart one of the favorite things he’s ever worked on, and credits Justin Marks, the creator of the show: “The writing is excellent, which attracts really good actors.” Among the sterling cast is, of course, J.K. Simmons, who plays two Howard Silks—the placid paper-pusher, Howard “Alpha,” in dimension one; and the cocksure clandestine operative, Howard “Prime,” in dimension two.
“I was very scared of him originally,” Lloyd admits with a laugh when I ask about his experience working with Simmons, who garnered an Oscar for his portrayal of a ruthless music instructor in Whiplash. “But he [Simmons] has been so welcoming and makes you feel at ease. I’ve learned so much from him—and we have a lot of fun.”
The scenes with Quayle Alpha and Howard Prime are often tense, even claustrophobic, not just because they take place in dark cars and cramped rooms, but because we sense the stranglehold of identity—the underlying question of just how much of one’s self is the product of choice versus circumstance. If you put John le Carré and Jorge Luis Borges in the same room, they might come up with something like this—forking paths that diverge and converge, labyrinths of spies and alter egos.
Lloyd describes Quayle Alpha and Howard Prime as an “unhappy couple, both caught in this lie, who must rely on each other even though neither likes or respects the other.” On the flip side, Lloyd continues, “Quayle Prime and Howard Alpha have a completely different relationship” such that playing his character’s “other” feels “like a completely different job.”
There’s a cerebral, granular detail to Lloyd’s musings when I ask about the characters, fictional or real, that he draws from in portraying the two Quayles.
He explains that while on break between filming the Berlin and LA portions of season two, he and Justin Marks discussed the aesthetics of Alien 3. Marks envisioned Echo, the interrogation facility in dimension two, as a “penal colony, rather than a hospital or prison. The relationships between the inmates and officers draw on that” psychological dynamic.
In conveying Quayle’s “slightly unhinged” persona, Lloyd takes cues from other classics: Billy Bibbit from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a “somewhat childish figure who looks up to McMurphy,” and Dennis Hopper’s character in Apocalypse Now, who harbors a manic obsession with Marlon Brando’s Kurtz. Lloyd incorporates elements of these characters in Quayle Prime’s dynamic with Yanek, a warden at Echo—there’s an “evangelical fervor, where you sense [the character’s] loss of contact with reality.”
Season two of the show delves deeper into the deceit, paranoia, and existential quandaries inherent in navigating and manipulating two worlds. (It seems no coincidence that the writers chose Alexander Pope as the name of the character who trains sleeper agents—a little learning is a dangerous thing.) I ask Lloyd about the techniques he uses to keep his Alpha and Prime personas from getting jumbled.
“In terms of playing two parts for the first time, I’m lucky in that Quayle Prime exists solely in the Echo location, so we were able to do all that filming in a couple of weeks over the summer,” Lloyd tells me. “This season, we started filming in Berlin and ended in LA, so having a new location, new set,” helped keep the two characters separate.
Lloyd can’t discuss more details from season two without risking plot spoilers, so we pivot to other projects. I mention the internet speculation over whether Viserys Targaryen makes a comeback in the next season of Game of Thrones. “Really?” Lloyd replies with a mix of curiosity and incredulity. “That death seemed pretty final to me—I’m not sure how he comes back from that.”
I explain that the Reddit murmurings refer more to flashback scenes, and then ask Lloyd about filming his character’s grisly exit.
“That was pretty much the last scene I filmed on that show, and I remember that day very well,” Lloyd says—the amusement is pronounced in his voice. “It was freezing cold. We shot quite early in the morning, and I had to act drunk. Doing that so early in the day can go horribly wrong,” he explains, as you don’t want to overact it. But with a death scene like that, where the would-be king is “crowned” as molten gold is poured over his head, Lloyd could really let loose with the screaming—a finale that’s seared into fans’ minds.
Lloyd draws out nuances in his characters through deep-dives into their back stories. When filming the Game of Thrones pilot, he kept George R.R. Martin’s books under his chair for ease of consultation. As the filming continued, though, Lloyd wanted to get beyond Daenerys Targaryen’s narration of Viserys as the “brute—the petulant, unkind older brother.”
In Lloyd’s view, that perspective discounts the whole of Targaryen history: “This character feels the weight of his family on his shoulders. He’s had a terrible childhood; his parents are dead. He has no family apart from a little sister who doesn’t understand the gravity of the situation. He carries these scars, and by re-writing the narrative as the ‘Chronicles of Viserys Targaryen,’ we start to see how Viserys justifies his cruelty.”
Lloyd pauses briefly, mulling over this re-framing: “That’s the job of an actor—to give your character a mouthpiece” and guide the audience as to where our sympathies should lie.
“It’s a great time to be an actor,” Lloyd continues. “I’m lucky to be working with people I’ve admired for years, and to arrange projects [in a way that allows me] to explore different avenues. I hope it stays like this—there are so many more stories to tell.”
Our conversation drifts to more meta territory—how technological evolution continues to reshape the way we consume and relate to art and storytelling. Lloyd is democratic in his engagement with cultural mediums—he enjoys audio books and made-for-radio plays, and he’s fascinated by the future of VR. He loves the stage and recently played the lead role in The Good Canary, John Malkovich’s London directorial debut. Lloyd has also been on the other side of the camera, writing and directing “Supreme Tweeter.” The short web series, made in 2015, is premised on a cheeky concept that came to his co-creator (and now wife), Jayne Hong, in a dream: What if North Korea’s Kim Jong-un suddenly follows you on Twitter—what absurdity might ensue and what are the implications of treating your identity as a commodity, a “brand”? (I point out that this satirical take on social media as propaganda was an eerily prescient concept, given our current Tweeter-in-Chief—a topic that Lloyd diplomatically sidesteps.)
With streaming services supplanting cable and the proliferation of social media content, it’s a challenge, says Lloyd, “to hold erratic attention spans for more than a moment.” Among the tech-driven transformations that he references is how long-form television shows like Counterpart, with intricate plot lines and character arcs, are replacing the novel as a way of enjoying long-form stories. He also observes that interactive video games are looking more like films, with complex narratives and attention to visual detail and cinematic soundtracks, and vice versa—there are online films that contain a choose-your-own-adventure component with multiple plot lines. These various forms of entertainment may all be converging, Lloyd hypothesizes, as “new audiences have a desperate thirst for full immersion.”
For all these innovations, though, Lloyd jokingly refers to himself as a “fuddy-duddy” who loves to read books and has a record player back home in London. That doesn’t rule out throwback video games, though—for Christmas, Marks gave him a miniature version of the original Nintendo system, preloaded with all the old NES games. His favorite? “Super Mario 3, where Mario gets to wear the raccoon tail.” And continuing the theme of constant evolution, Lloyd points out that players now design new levels for these old games, which everyone can then upload to their own handheld consoles.
For now, though, there’s not much by way of free time. Lloyd is a new dad, and it’s entirely endearing how his tone and manner warm to the point of giddiness when discussing fatherhood. “Long story short, it’s phenomenal, beyond description,” he says. “There’s definitely a lot to learn,” but he’s enjoying the daily agenda, which includes “a lot of singing and chatting and mimicry” with the baby—spending time “staring at each other, making each other laugh, communicating in this pre-language way, just getting to know each other.”
As for audiences just getting to know Lloyd, the depth and versatility he brings to screen and stage promise many more dimensions beyond Quayle’s Alpha and Prime selves to be explored. Lloyd doesn’t rule out anything when it comes to collaborations and characters—as he puts it, “the more you give, the more you get out of the experience.” And more of Harry Lloyd is a very good thing.

I Was Normal 2 Great Danes Ago T-Shirt
Engine problems in the standard street so the special also gets a I Was Normal 2 Great Danes Ago T-Shirt bigger capacity engine course the nominal batch of the bike know a lot valve cylinder heads I know this is probably years ago they did just be able to deliver more performance more performance more smooth running pattern engine that’s more efficient that can meet admission standardsand other parts of the worldand this Milwaukee is just you just went Harley Davidson to make the enginesand the more smooth or a more well calibrated with the same engine is smoother it’s more quiet in terms of mechanical noise you actually hear more of that awesome exhaust potato potato salad than ever beforeand overall settlement whopping amount to tour the 11 tour Dunlop tire 11 foot pound of torque writer on 2800 RPM makes around 80 hp on the Dino so horsepower numbers are outrageous by any means elements found in appear but the tour is torque output is quite just amazing how much power is put out his cell phone to run through the 60 shit play their 45 between fury felt by wearily I get back to being playful but they actually are vegans are very playful specialists more 114 corner Harley Davidson hobby SATA or street glad 2006 talked about thatand in 2009 Harley Davidson in all nature you suspect can really refine the handling of this bike think I went on message adoption or maybe if you introduction believe that how well the big touring bike handleand fast forward to the kids today that is creating handling manners are still very much aliveand apparent in this motorcycle even though the frame itself is over 10 years old so very nice handling bike from Harley Davidson it’s important to note that a couple years ago when they went to the Milwaukee formation they also introduced a unique technology from their suspension supplier show off Harley Davidson’s been writing show suspension foreverand this by all the touring bike in the show is tool that being valve suspension technology what is basically instead of that how sad for having asked about a fluid movement these out to about they actually paid a floatand mail out different amounts of fluid transfer at different parts of the strokeand basically what bad guys is equates to a more controlled Ron so when you when you’re saying you’re putting a lot of pitch on the frontand with the front brake given gas on the push to get on a gas that the suspension is actually able to respond to those changes more accuratelyand a little bit with more consistent dampingand basically if you have more consistent to me of more more control of the motorcycle done with the addition of show it to open the valve issue on the father just rain here they lose yesterday as he made quite here in Southern California which is unusual control like God about that right now this is outfitted with Harley Davidson RVR option in the 1000 chargeand purchase on all the touring bike standard I believe on the live wireand premium CDL equipped Harley Davidson touring bikeand what authority are basically hurried Harley Davidson control which he also ordering ABS so Harley Davidson gun is actually fittedand you ship your iPhoneand other modern smart phonesand what that ship guys allows the motorcycle positional awarenessand ask why the planes so you got pitchand roll to the motorcycle now understands where it is in uses the informationand favorite ECUand if you give the motorcycle too much throttle for giving me that we know are vehicle conditions or conversely here leaned over too much with too much front brake input actually automatically reduce power or take outbreak pressure from the front brakeand move it to the back break or vice versa while you’re running it doesn’t automatically so it’s pretty impressive technology I mean this is technology that up until recently only high caliber sport bikes I mean the high caliber sport bike to just introduced this technology a few years ago 345 years ago so for Harley Davidson to be implementing this on their touring bikes it’s quite amazingand just that amount engineering timeand an enticing requires to develop that kind of system it takes a lot of time to get it right it’s amazing that Harley Davidson’s been able to introduce it so quickly implemented on these motorcycles we had a chance to really well on this motorcycleand corner in Iraq it really hard to actually vouch for how well it works but just during this commute ride it’s very effectiveand based on Harley Davidson’s ability to to testing engineer things I’d assume that works pretty good when you get to the twisty stretches of pavement a transition our back that means a lot tire you out final drive hydraulic cheer Harley Davidson’s always switch between manualand hydraulic manual I draw the hydraulic clutch in a while since I’ve her street glad that it written one of the new Milan streetlight with this hydraulic clutch in the clutch as well or feeland that the had in the previous generation touring bikes before I remember it was very hard on the clutch depressedand the motor was neutraland in your was in gearand there was not much battery need to deal this one more modulation it still a little bitand still a little bit all feelings impaired to other companies as well but still way more than I remember writing it Harley Davidson there’s some things you want which is silly but one have a little bit more clutch lever for you water is cool mechanical when you go to the gearbox located a clunk like the gearbox isn’t well made club that gives you a good secure mechanical feeling it’s almost like the top of an old watch from the 1800s like that is what kind of character these motorcycles possess very happily this party are stemming as the roads are very slippery see you there the traffic control like flash is satisfied that they really dive very regal ride loads over the funds very well represent very easy to experience his weight floating fairing moves with the bar so about right are very good good job of even when Harley Davidson used to have this back cover here this vent covers for reduced the turbulence of hair behind the right behind the fairing here previously we could actually open event but they they deleted that set up for 2020 not just fixed this bike include all LED lighting which really helps you stand out on the road also helps see what’s going on in front you instrumentation I love hobby SATA big color TFT display the analog gauges are very nice to them in their duality between the of an American motorcycle with these gaugesand then you are the modern function of the instrument face some major congestion which is quite normal. 3 ounce paint on this but rains pretty easily on this bike without much concernand on the same position isn’t overly harsh over like a lot of more performance focused bikes are great like this yellow strain on your ear resting on the restraining arrested upright not present a problem on the neonatal have when production I you really forward into the wind just a little bitand so that does mean that they don’t feel like you’re cussing holding onto the bars 70 or 80 miles an hour just to stay onand that Questar areas windshields available for the bikes so you a lot highway writing speed there’s a way to set I personally thought this bike anyone the first things I would do is probably an exhaustand intake I think that’s a precognitive evil to say that on this bike the character the engine in stock form is a little too sedate for the capabilities of the chassis when he met is that I think this chassis would really benefit from a lot of more rambunctious more red hot motorand there’s many ways to do that with the sportster Odyssey I usually like the hoteland build celebrity SR 1200 had in this chassis that motor be a really good fit personality wise for the chassis is now everything else is been upgraded performance lies like the suspensionand the brakes I think that the bike could really use a little bit extra grunt from the motor little more sound obviously I but also just a little more of a red happy nature so I just need a bike feel that more likely exhaustand intake unitsand goes a long way towards that sustainedand upgrade by a distaste to it some more star focus can so all in all I deathly recommend this for anybody looking for performance focused on I classic style bike I it’s it’s a really good option for that market I knew only hesitation I would have been recommending is if you do a lot highway writing it does have 5 feet is not to buddy out on the highway provided to stay in the low 80 miles an hour you’re trying to fasten I regularly get an ability to decide sustained speed onand then I say it does have a pretty healthy so if you’re just starting out it might not be the best bike to start with as it is I 500 poundsand is quite a policy so if it’s your first bike MS your tall guy or falling out I would recommend potentially starting somewhere else but that that’s just one word of caution it is your first bike view mirrorand mine is a day on the tall side item to see Lisa that Harley in the rest of the motorcycle market is not a particularly called bikes upand I don’t want to scare you away from that but definitely only use it to check one out I sit on itand make sure that you feel like it’s comfortable for you because is one thing that most of the feeling of sportster’ Guys now leave I hear you from the oldest largestand finest leadership in the greater Los Angeles area labor laws Harley Davidson so easily popular model so maybe doing a review etc. Come out as good a take right back to the sound that you guys had in the since you’re 15 years oldand all kinds of critics in all kinds of writing to say wow look at this we got this whole new sound that’s reminiscent of the Beatles back in the 60s while the party beat playing Gertz blobsand Zach doing as of right now that have new instrumentsand although rock ‘n roll was brand new when it came outand excited everybody was it had roots in bluesand jazz selling that way they would have their roots in the 60s 70sand possibly fed the back but you constantly rock ‘n roll in the 20s musical life you look for itand find out where it came fromand you can find that led Beatles music came from any musicand just like it has its history before we get into your your immigration statusand will bring Mr Wilds out at that time hoorayand that is a controversy for youand for people who would want you to stay in this country you been involved in some other mini controversies like the time that you were on the cover of the album

A Brief Guide for Standard Calibration Weights
Calibration weights ensure scales and other devices offer accurate results in the lab. However, they calibrate different instruments and are made of different materials.
They are given a class based on their accuracy. This article looks at various classes and considerations when choosing one.
What are Calibration Weights?
Calibration weights check a scale’s accuracy. They are commonly certified by industrial laboratories or bodies such as ISO, ANSI, NIST, and ASTM. Each weight often has a precise mass, ensuring the scale at hand is working precisely.
And to ensure they meet international or national standards; they will come with supporting documents. The documents contain information such as cavities, surface finishing, design, tolerance, and material.
Calibration weights can also check the accuracy of balances and weight cells. As you’d expect, the weights are used for different reasons, with those used in scientific labs having a higher benchmark.
Classes of Calibration Weights
Generally, there are three main calibration weight classes. They include NIST, ASTM, and OIML.
NIST
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) class F weights are standard in industrial settings. They verify Class III, Class IIII, and non-designated scales.
They are common in manufacturing and warehouse settings where large products are produced or shipped. Since they are not accurate enough, scientific laboratories don’t use them.
ASTM
ASTM International is a non-profit organization dealing with the production of voluntary consensus standards. The organization has developed ten weight classes: Class 000 to Class 7.
The Class with the lowest number has less tolerance. Laboratories will often use Class 000 to Class 4. ASTM classes are most common in USA laboratories.
ASTM Class 0 – 000
ASTM Class 0 – 000 is the most preferred class weight in most USA laboratories. This class range is, however, common with metrology laboratories. They are expensive compared to other classes and require a controlled environment for optimal results. Besides, they are high tolerance. A lab technician should handle them with tweezers to avoid damage.
ASTM Class 1
Ideally, semi-micro and analytical balances use readabilities of 0.01 mg and 0.1 mg, respectively. As such, one should use ASTM Class 1 to calibrate devices weighing a fraction of a gram. They are also used as a reference when calibrating high-tolerance weights. Like ASTM Class 0 – 000, they are delicate, and one should use tweezers or gloves when handling them.
ASTM Class 2
This Class is ideal for higher precision balances, ideally, those between 0.01 and 0.001 grams of readabilities. Such balances are standard in chemical compounding and pharmaceutical industries.
ASTM Class 3
The ASTM Class 3 is ideal for balances with readability between 0.1 and 0.001 grams. These scales are standard in commercial laboratories.
ASTM Class 4-6
ASTM 4 thru 6 calibration weights check the accuracy of Class III, IIIL, and unmarked scales. Scales in student laboratories often require this calibration class weight. They are ideal for readability lower than 0.1 grams.
ASTM Class 7
It is the Class with the highest tolerance. It is suitable for Class III, Class III, and non-designated scales. These scales are standard in industrial applications such as shipping, warehouses, and others.
OIML
The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) is an international organization dealing with the provision of standards and systems in the metrology industry. They ensure adherence to harmonic and legal procedures, with the lowest Class being the most accurate. OIML classes are E1, E2, F1, F2, M1, M2, and M3. They are popular outside the US.
OIML Class E1
It is the reference class for calibrating other reference calibration weights within a controlled and safe environment. Metrology and calibration laboratories or similar settings should use this class weight. It can calibrate Class I and Class II laboratory balances and analytical balances. The OIML Class E1 is identical to ASTM Class 00.
OIML Class E2
The OIML Class E2 is a reference standard for calibrating other weights. It is ideal for calibrating high-precision balances with readability between 0.1 mg and 0.01 mg. They can calibrate high-precision analytical balances like Class I and Class II. These weights are equivalent to ASTM Class 1 weights.
OIML Class F1
It is appropriate for calibrating balances with readability between 0.01 g and 0.001 g. It is suitable for high-precision top-loading Class I and II balances, making it ideal for digital scales and lab balances. ASTM Class 2 and Class 3 weights are equivalent to this Class.
OIML Class F2
It is appropriate for semi-analytical balances and student use. They should be used in a class setting where minimal calibrations are needed. They are suitable for calibrating Class III, IIIL, or IIII digital weighing scales.
OIML Class M1, M2, M3
These are primarily used in general-purpose industrial, educational, commercial, and technical sectors. They can calibrate Class III, IIIL, or IIII digital scales. Since they are made of stainless steel or cast iron, a little precaution is needed when handling them.
While these are the most common calibration weights, some manufacturers like Troemner have unique Class weights. They are UltraClass Platinum, UltraClass Gold, and UltraClass.
Obsolete classes
The following classes are no longer in use.
Class M
Class T
Class C
Class Q
Class S
Class P
Class S1
Factors to consider when choosing calibration weights
Material
Cast iron and stainless steel are often used for OIML Class M1 and M2, as well as NIST Class F and ASTM Class 6 and 7. Cast iron is recommended for weights that are 10 kg or heavier. If the weight is in metric units, it will have gold paint, while avoirdupois units will have silver paint.
Weights between 5 kg and 10 kg can be stainless steel, steel, or iron. For weights between 5g and 5kg, they should be of a material with a hardness of Rockwell B80 and above. All calibration weights should be of wear and corrosion-resistant material.
OIML E1, E2, and F1, as well as ASTM 000 – 4, are of a highly polished material such as stainless steel. As such, one should handle them with care. We recommend using tweezers or gloves.
Shape
Weight scale calibration uses classes of different styles, the most common being a leaf, cylindrical, slotted, and grip handle.
Grip handle weights
Grip handle weights are made of cast iron. They are for calibrating large scales, mainly in industries producing large products. Ideally, they fall under NIST (Class 6 and 7) or OIML (M1 and M2). Unlike other weights, one can place them in calibrated buckets during calibration.
Slotted
Referred to as nesting slab weights, they are appropriate for calibration requiring one to hang test weights. Thanks to their design, you can easily stack and slot them onto calibrated hangers. They fall under the same Class as grip handle weights.
Cylindrical weights
Cylindrical weights are 5kg and hence can be applied in different calibrations. Falling in the Class F weights, they are appropriate for calibrating the bench and other more minor scales.
Leaf weights
Leaf weights calibrate high precision and resolution balances. Since they are delicate, one should handle them with gloves and tweezers.
Measurement units
For best results, you should use calibration weights with similar units as those of the scale. For example, consider buying a metric weight if the subject is in metric units.
Magnetism
Avoid buying weights with magnetic material to avoid scale damage and incorrect calibration.
Test load configuration
To avoid errors, use a few calibration weights. For example, if the test point is 20 kg, use one 20kg instead of two 10kg weights.
Weights certification
The application will require calibration weights to come with a certificate. It confirms they are accredited, hence will offer accurate results. Some typical accreditations are:
ISO/IEC 17025
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a non-governmental organization with 164 national standard body members. The International Electrochemical Commission (IEC) sets standards in the electrochemical field. Together, they created the ISO/IEC 17025 standard that calibration laboratories use for accreditation.
NIST/NVLAP
NVLAP is part of NIST, created by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program. It offers accreditation to calibration labs. The NIST program follows the ISO/IEC 17025 standard.
Construction
Typical calibration weights are made of one cast metal piece. However, weights such as Troemner’s 1g and above UltraClass consist of two parts. The calibration weights consist of a knob and a body.

Will the 2020 BMW 228i xDrive Gran Coupe Win Us Over in a Year?
What is it? Who’s going to buy this thing? Why does it exist? Those are just some of the questions people asked (from a safe distance) about the 2020 BMW 228i xDrive Gran Coupe. With the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class as its only competitor, the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is a niche model. For that reason alone, we don’t blame consumers for asking so many questions about this oddball luxury sedan or for not knowing BMW even offers such a model.
Slotting below the legendary 3 Series, the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is the smallest sedan in the German automaker’s lineup. As BMW’s newest entry-level car, the 2 Series Gran Coupe has been tasked with luring new consumers—particularly younger ones—into the brand. That means the 2 Series Gran Coupe must compete with other luxury-badged subcompact cars and fully loaded mainstream models priced around $30,000 to $40,000, making its job that much tougher.
You won’t mistake the 2 Series Gran Coupe for anything else—even in a crowded parking lot. The exterior design was a point of contention during its 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show debut and remains the baby Bimmer’s most controversial aspect well into 2020. Like other BMW Gran Coupe models, the 2 Series Gran Coupe has a swoopy roofline. The compact dimensions and low-slung profile result in an oddly short decklid that suggests there may be a liftgate out back. (There isn’t.) You also get an X2-like mug complete with oversized kidney grilles that look like they could shred you to pieces.
In a surprise move, BMW gave the 2 Series Gran Coupe a generous list of standard equipment. That includes LED headlights, Apple CarPlay integration (Android Auto is promised in late 2020), 10-way power adjustable front seats, and the Active Driving Assistant suite, which bundles together lane departure warning, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, and front automatic emergency braking. Our long-termer also came with extras such as embedded navigation, tasty chocolate brown two-tone leather upholstery, two 10.3-inch displays, 18-inch wheels, and adaptive LED headlights. You can also get adaptive cruise control, an automatic self-parking system, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system, but our example didn’t come with those features.
The 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is the first FWD-based BMW sedan in the U.S., sharing the same UKL2 platform as the X1, X2, and Mini’s larger models. Although all 2 Series Gran Coupe models in the U.S. have all-wheel drive, the car operates mainly in front-drive mode, sending up to 50 percent of torque to the rear wheels only when you need extra traction. Our long-term 228i Gran Coupe also has the M Sport package, adding an M Sport suspension and special steering calibration. The 2.0-liter turbo I-4 makes 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, as it does in its SUV siblings. The EPA rates fuel economy at 23/33 mpg city/highway with the standard eight-speed automatic transmission. We’ll be putting the car through MotorTrend’s rigorous performance testing and EQUA Real MPG evaluation to verify its fuel economy once we’re past BMW’s 1,200-mile recommended break-in period.
We’re looking forward to spending more time with BMW’s new small sedan. The car’s niche yet entry-level positioning piques our interest, and we want to see how this formula fares in today’s ever-changing automotive environment. Will the 2020 2 Series Gran Coupe live up to the BMW badge adorning its hood, or will it divide opinions like the X1 and X2? Is the 2 Series Gran Coupe a better option than a base 3 Series? Will we find answers to the questions that people asked us about the car? We have a year to do all that. Along the way, we hope to find some surprises, too, so stay tuned.

MY MOMENTS OUT OF TIME IN FILM 2019
Instead of a Top 10 List, every year I like to honor a long-discontinued but influential annual column from Film Comment magazine. I couldn’t wait for my father to come home from work with the “Moments Out Of Time” issue. The writers would cite their favorite scenes, images, or lines of dialogue, even from films they may not have liked, because let’s face it, even bad films may have a great moment or two.
The year brought us so many wonderful films. Parasite wowed me with its ability to surprise while telling an important story about class divisions. I think Once Upon A Time In…Hollywood will stop me in my tracks over and over again with its immersive deep dive into late 1960s Los Angeles. The female-on-female gaze gets a workout in the stunning Portrait Of A Lady On Fire, while Jojo Rabbit masterfully walks a tightrope between hilarious and moving. Watching Eddie Murphy return firing on all cylinders in Dolemite Is My Name remains one of the most joyous movie experiences of the year. Yet, even I can’t see them all, but here, in no particular order, are my Moments Out Of Time in film for 2019:
A door opens, someone calls out “Honey?”, as the plot veers off in a jaw-droppingly unexpected, biggest WTF of the year direction, turning a light class comedy into something far, far, deeper- Parasite
Upon the assassination of JFK, his enemy, Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) orders the half mast flag in front of the Teamsters' Union to be raised back to its standard position. As Hoffa looks up at the flag, this chilling, diabolical scene feels like the end of civil society as we know it - The Irishman
“Climb in my fur” - my favorite line of dialogue last year, cementing Jennifer Lopez’s Ramona as an iconic film character who can take sexual innuendo and turn it into an invitation for friendship - Hustlers
“That was the best acting I’ve ever seen in my whole life” - dialogue runner up as a young actress (Julia Butters) whispers into the insecure but committed actor Rick Dalton’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) ear, causing him to weep uncontrollably and giving him the recognition he’s always craved - Once Upon A Time In…Hollywood
A boy spies a flitting butterfly and stands up to get a better look, notices a pair of shoes next to him, and in an instant his entire life heartbreakingly changes - Jojo Rabbit
A vacationing family looks out their window to see…themselves…lined up and waiting to invade their home - Us
A gate which will no longer close on its own. Two estranged parents and their child manually slide it shut with the barrier separating them from each other. The battle lines have been drawn with deft precision - Marriage Story
A woman stares at another across a theater. They have a history. The symphony plays a striking, propulsive piece which both women know so well. A searing two minute close-up of the women she sees betrays her anguish, the pain, the missed opportunities, and the suffering of a woman who society demanded could not be herself - Portrait Of A Lady On Fire
Best final scene of the year: Two best friends sit in a car curbside at an airport. They awkwardly exchange awkward pleasantries even though we can tell they’re really going to miss each other. A delicate cover of “Unchained Melody” plays over stellar performances of Kaitlyn Dever walking away and Beanie Feldstein looking forelorn, both conveying that painful moment when high school besties part. Then, suddenly remembering it’s a hilarious comedy, Feldstein almost crashes into Dever, who gets back in the car and they decide they have enough time to get pancakes. Feldstein yells, “F*ck yeah!” as we smash cut to black - Booksmart
While he’s wanted inside at his premiere, Rudy Ray Moore can’t walk away from the fans waiting outside the theatre, choosing instead to give himself over to them and melting everyone’s hearts, including mine, in the process - Dolemite Is My Name
Wait! This guy is at your Passover Seder? You’re related to him? Now I’m scared - Uncut Gems
A milked cow. A barn. A dogfight up in the skies above. A knife. Two soldiers foraging for food, safety, and a chance to survive the next minute. Everything changes. - 1917
Matthew McConaughey as Baker Dill (!) spends most of his time howling to the heavens or completely naked, and for these reasons, I will never forget this terrible, amazing film experience - Serenity
When she forgets the words to her signature song, the audience sings them for her, making us all realize that even though she was close to death, the memory of her will never fade away - Judy
Normally, I’d be delighted to open my window and see Isabelle Huppert staring at me from across the street, but here, it’s a hauntingly nightmarish image - Greta
Julianne Moore sings along to an Air Supply song in her car and somehow manages to make her lapse in taste seem heartfelt - Gloria Bell
I love comedic moments built from repetition or missed connections. When Jack (Himesh Patel) can’t get his parents to sit still for a moment so that he can convince them he wrote the song “Let It Be”, his incredulousness and frustration strikes comedy gold - Yesterday
A young writer negotiates her terms with a publisher, gloriously finding her voice and her power at a time where such bravery seemed impossible - Little Women
A drunk, lonely, middle-aged woman dances alone in a small town honky tonk to Leon Russell’s “Out Of The Woods”, giving us a glimpse into her less austere past - Diane
A dildo with a retractable switch blade - Knife + Heart
What do the sounds of Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s songs look like? A man crashing out of a window and joining a dancing flash mob at a carnival to “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting” felt alive and electric, Yet, even more so, in a moment achieving some level of transcendence, Elton (a fantastic Taron Egerton) falls sideways off of a diving board into a pool where his boyhood self plays the title song on a piano at the bottom. That we somehow end up at Dodger Stadium where a sparkly Elton greets his fans and flies up into the stratosphere makes his classic soar - Rocketman
A grunge pop star/recovering addict (Elizabeth Moss), not too dissimilar to Courtney Love, sits at a piano and performs a sober rendition of Bryan Adams’ “Heaven”, stripping away the outrageous bravado to quietly break out hearts - Her Smell
“Agency” seems to be on everyone’s lips when describing dynamic, plot-driving lead characters, but Leo’s (star in the making Félix Maritaud) choices don’t fit into a standard box. His decision, like it or not, is all his. - Sauvage/Wild
In a film filled to the brim with unforgettable, emotionally-laden images, its final shot of a man rowing a boat across turbulent waters moved me to tears - The Last Black Man In San Francisco
To learn from a documentary that the Ten Commandments monuments on display in front of many City Halls across the U.S. resulted from a Charlton Heston-led publicity tour for his 1956 movie epic is to realize, painfully so, that sometimes Hollywood and not the Churches, ruins everything! - Hail Satan?
Although, sooner or later, most of us will end up in a patch of dirt, some long for that moment more than others and find beauty in it - High Life
Watching Laura Dern pull off one of the most notorious literary scandals of modern times gives us one of the most original kicks of the year in a scene with an interviewer. She hides in plain sight as a novelist pretending to be the terribly British Manager to Kristen Stewart’s fake face of the same novelist in order to build mystique and sell more books - J.T. LeRoy
Who knew that a CGI-animated film for the whole family would have the most bone-chilling sequence of the year? But there it was in an antique store with Gabby Gabby and the creepy ventriloquist dummies - Toy Story 4
A woman enters her drab Chinese hotel room only to be asked if the U.S. is better by the anxious bellboy. Afraid to offend him, she merely tells him it’s different. The things we do to ease the pain of the less fortunate. - The Farewell
Three women. An elevator on its way to the chairman’s office. The sideways glances. The knowledge they all have of what awaits them. A silent sisterhood until Nicole Kidman’s Gretchen Carlson awkwardly comments, “Hot in here”. The year’s best calibrated scene - Bombshell
An out gay actor, Mark Patton, confronts the writer of the film which ruined his career and gets an apology. The years of pain written across his face don’t go away, but a little weight of the world gets lifted from his very relieved, very courageous shoulders - Scream Queen! My Nightmare On Elm Street
While Tarantino played around with historical revisionist wish fulfillment, director Mary Herron and writer Guinevere Turner tapped into female rage in telling the story of the Manson murders. When Hannah Murray as Leslie Van Houten carries out one of the murders, screaming as she plunges a knife into someone, we get a rare glimpse into finally understanding what brought her to that point - Charlie Says
After Lily Collins’s Liz demands, “ Release me…what happened to her head?” as a way for doomed serial killer Ted Bundy (a chilling Zac Efron) to admit his guilt, he finally writes with his finger on the glass prison visitor’s window which separates them, one frightening word, “Hacksaw” only to wipe it away immediately - Extremely Wicked Shockingly Evil And Vile
A gay white man and his straight, non-English speaking Latino handyman bond over Madonna’s “Borderline” in the back seat of an Uber. Matt Bomer’s angsty character finally relaxes and connects with this adorable man (Alejandro Patiño) doing ridiculously cute seated dance moves - Papi Chulo
A young woman rushes to her apartment bathroom and in a seamless transition, she emerges down the aisle of a plane headed for Sweden - Midsommar
Sometimes one can derive great pleasure from a film by simply listening to how Adam Driver says the word “ghouls” - The Dead Don’t Die
An actress known primarily for her own murder gleefully watches herself on the big screen in a Westwood Village movie theater, and in that moment, we finally experience the gorgeous humanity and not the horrendous end of this lovely person - Once Upon A Time In…Hollywood
When you have an icy, almost robotic main character, you need Alfre Woodard to masterfully play drunk and show you all of her other shades - Clemency
I don’t care if the film felt like a xerox copy of the original or if the CGI ruined everything, because Billy Eichner’s Timon arrives at a now barren, picked apart Pride Rock and blurts out, “Talk about a fixer-upper. I think you went heavy on the carcass.” - The Lion King
When was the last time you saw a film where a character stops the action to demand of another, “I want you to know about me!”? - The Peanut Butter Falcon
A young Irish indentured servant in 1825 Tasmania watches helplessly as a soldier kills her baby just to stop its crying, and that’s only the beginning of a long line of justifications for her rage - The Nightingale
Nothing like a well-placed coffee mug to illustrate your main theme in the final image of your movie - Knives Out
Tracy Letts’ Henry Ford II feels the sheer power of one of his race cars and provides the most beautiful, unexpected crying scene of the year - Ford v. Ferrari
The funniest crossing a busy freeway scene since Eddie Murphy attempted it in 1999’s Bowfinger - Good Boys
A split second choice at what should have been a routine traffic stop changes the lives of our unlucky, racially profiled, sweet, smart but “not a match” Tinder date protagonists - Queen & Slim
A passport inspector asks, “Purpose of your visit?” The young man replies, “I’m going to see Bruce Springsteen’s hometown.” As he stamps his papers, the inspector responds, “I can’t think of a better reason to visit the United States than to see the home of The Boss” - Blinded By The Light
A horribly brutalized gay man wafts to shore only to see the haunting image of a scary clown reaching out to perhaps save him? Nah, he’s a midnight snack - It Chapter 2
A young child, caught between his parents arguing over the phone, conveys painful messages to the supposed adults in the equation - Honey Boy
Sometimes an unreturned text can send you spiraling so far out of control that you ruin your life and everyone else’s around you - Waves
That last moment of bliss between a husband and wife right before their quiet mountaintop hamlet gets invaded by the sounds of planes overheard and the Nazis arriving to recruit them - A Hidden Life
You may have gotten in shape, but without true growth, the fat girl inside you won’t hesitate to shame another - Brittany Runs A Marathon
Gabriel Luna wins the award for sexiest performance in a terrible movie as a new killing machine decked out in tight pants and a killer stare - Terminator: Dark Fate
A mentally disturbed aspiring comic turned homicidal maniac disastrously makes his late night talk show debut, posing ominously backstage, skipping out with a bizarre tap twirl flourish, and then…well…like a true comic…he kills - Joker
Alec Baldwin, in a stunning monologue, basically shows us the early rise of people like Donald Trump, as all sense of hope gets sapped away - Motherless Brooklyn
An old sailor and his new charge stare down the camera right at us, somehow letting us know that we have no idea what bleak is, so hold on tight - The Lighthouse
A farmer (a never better Bill Camp) barges in on a corporate lawyer to get him to investigate the dying cattle in his hometown. From such humble beginnings comes something which affects every single one of us - Dark Waters
An aspiring Scottish country singer sneaks away from her Grand Ole Opry tour group to sing alone on the main stage and perhaps get discovered. When she learns that everybody does that, she realizes she isn’t that special after all - Wild Rose
Biggest cinematic moment of dread: When a Chinese billionaire reopens a shuttered Ohio GM plant and hires back some of the workers at half their salaries and without benefits, you know you’ve just boarded a slow moving train to hell - American Factory
Did he do it? Is he a terrorist? Or is he a good guy? How much of his tragic past is still present within him? That final image will keep me guessing forever - Luce
A devoted Chinese Communist Party Member and abortion specialist knows she can never redeem herself from the part she played in ruining so many lives - One Child Nation
You may take issue with the implications that her real life character traded sex for intel and that she’s no longer alive to defend herself, but Olivia Wilde gave one of the most vivid, exciting, ballsy performances of the year - Richard Jewell
An actual minute of silence in a film would normally be its death knell, but when Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers demands it, we rethink our own hurried, impulsive lives - A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood
Sure she overdid it. Yes she had an odd, hairy, uncanny face and strangely manicured nails for days. Overwrought doesn’t even begin to describe it, but when she hits that big note and belts out, “Touch me / It’s so easy to leave me / All alone with the memory / Of my days in the sun”, damned if I didn’t snot cry right along with her - Cats

Brooks Koepka is what pro golf needs because he makes you mad
Brooks Koepka’s going to win another major championship — and someone’s going to call him aloof or boring on a weekday talk show again this week. That’s dumb.
1. Today I drove four hours through the high Mojave Desert, the desolate, yet beautiful stretch from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. If memory stands to reason, it was roughly around Barstow, California where Hunter S. Thompson said the hallucinogens began to take hold. Perhaps that was from the LSD, but it might as well be from the sensory overload of the expanse. You are out there, alone, searching for some barometer for which to calibrate your being and the concept of time — maybe a rest stop, a building, whatever. There is none of that. Just you and your thoughts, contemplating your existence, biding the time until the end of the drive.
2. Perhaps this is what playing golf against Brooks Koepka is like on a major championship week. It might be any given PGA Championship or US Open or whatever three or five or eighteen more of these that are still on the horizon. Brooks Koepka will take you, throw you into some timeless black box that deprives you of any sort of calibration and beat you so badly that you have no idea what is up, down, left, right.
3. That thing? Yeah, it’s happening again. At the moment you woke up Sunday morning, Brooks Koepka is seven shots clear of the entire field at 12-under-par. No other player is better than five-under par. He will win Sunday. If you’re here for a dramatic finish, there’s no point in watching. He literally acknowledged there’s zero chance of loss on the press center dais Saturday night. His competitors have done the same. There is a late-stage Instagram automaton who’s evolved into his final form as a major championship cyborg. Go enjoy a walk, or your family, or a $7.99 Golden Corral steak. Whatever your normal non-major Sunday entails.
4. At the end of all the formalities, Brooks Koepka will have four major championship wins, all coming in the last nine majors. Golf is not supposed to work like this, not almost-even odds against a field of over 100 other players. Golf generally celebrates this kind of dominance, but Brooks Koepka is Brooks Koepka and capital-G Golf isn’t quite sure what to do with Brooks Koepka being Brooks Koepka.
5. He’s boring. Doesn’t care about golf. Thinks it’s for nerds. Isn’t concerned with your press conference questions, isn’t concerned with walking you through a shot-by-shot, thought-by-thought type of break down of a round others will give you. He works out too much. Allegedly lost too much weight so he could be diminishing-returns levels of hotter for a magazine shoot. He doesn’t fit the desired points. He isn’t Jordan Spieth. We can’t calibrate him. Boring.
6. But, perhaps, perhaps – that’s all wrong. What if Brooks Koepka is actually the most interesting man in the sport today? What if your press conference questions suck? What if the types that answer in overblown detail are the neurotic weirdos? At some point in the last couple of days, Fox Sports ran a segment asking if Brooks Kopeka is the Kawhi Leonard of golf.
7. Brooks Koepka is fun because he makes The Golf People mad. He talks shit in places where he’s supposed to be gracious, doesn’t care for being a golf nerd – but also cares deeply about what you’re saying about him. He reads your tweets and stories, and shares Brandel Chamblee photoshopped as a clown on his Twitter feed. Brooks Koepka wants to be exactly good enough at golf to be able to slide into Instagram DMs if he wanted to, and Brooks Koepka wants to be just hot enough to pull it off, if he wanted to.
8. Hell, let’s go further than mad, existentially uneasy. He’s just another proof-point that the Very Important Values of a professional golfer are changing – just as they are for recreational players throughout the country. Golf needs to be less stuffy, shorter, more open, and more like the other major sports in this country where character development can follow more than 2-3 templatized career arcs.
9. If you do watch Sunday, appreciate this, because Brooks Koepka is a star – and the kind of star golf needs. Golf doesn’t need a face and a voice cut from the same elitist, self-important cloth of the other Golf People. It needs a svelte, cocky destroyer of worlds who just so happens to really enjoy passing out likes to pictures of butts on Instagram. Leave Brooks Kopeka alone, let him be your version of boring, let him win roughly 25 majors.

Sum and Difference of Random Variables
When given two random variables X₁ and X₂, it is useful to consider the random variable that represents their sum, X₁ + X₂, or difference, X₁ – X₂.
Expected Value and Variance The expectation of the sum of two random discrete variables is equal to the sum of their expectations.
E(X₁ + X₂) = E(X₁) + E(X₂)
The expectation of the difference of two random discrete variables is equal to the difference of their expectations.
E(X₁ – X₂) = E(X₁) – E(X₂)
If the variables X₁ and X₂ are independent, then the variance of their sum is equal to the sum of their variances.
Var(X₁ + X₂) = Var(X₁) + Var(X₂)
If the variables X₁ and X₂ are independent, then the variance of their difference is equal to the sum of their variances.
Var(X₁ – X₂) = Var(X₁) + Var(X₂)
Independence Two random variables are independent if the knowledge of the value of one of the two variables does not affect the probability distribution of the other variable.
Therefore, X₁ and X₂ are independent if it is known that X₁ = x₁ provides no more information about X₂ than the information of X₂ with X₁ unknown.
Note that the condition of X₁ and X₂ being independent is only required for variance of the sum of the two variables to be equal to the sum of their variances.
Distributions of the Sum and Difference of Random Variables It can also be shown that, if X₁ and X₂ are both normally distributed and independent, then X₁ + X₂ and X₁ – X₂ are also normally distributed.
Let X₁ be the number of points per game scored by basketball player Lebron James. Suppose it is known that the mean and standard deviation of X₁ are μ₁ = 27.5 and σ₁ = 7.2. Let X₂ be the number of points per game scored by Kobe Bryant. Suppose it is known that the mean and standard deviation of X₂ are μ₂ = 25.2 and σ₂ = 6.3. The Cleveland Cavaliers are playing the Los Angeles Lakers. Let X₁ + X₂ be the total number of points scored by the two players in the game. a) What are the mean and standard deviation of X₁ + X₂? b) What are the mean and standard deviation of X₁ – X₂?
Assuming X₁ and X₂ are independent:
a)
μ₁ + μ₂ = E(X₁ + X₂) = E(X₁) + E(X₂) = 27.5 + 25.2 = 52.7 σ₁² + σ₂² = Var(X₁ + X₂) + Var(X₁) + Var(X₂) = 91.53 sd(X₁ + X₂) = √(91.53) ≈ 9.57
b)
μ₁ – μ₂ = E(X₁ – X₂) = E(X₁) – E(X₂) = 2.3 σ₁² – σ₂² = Var(X₁ – X₂) = Var(X₁) + Var(X₂) = 91.53 sd(X₁ – X₂) = √(91.53) ≈ 9.57
Weights of apples sold at a supermarket follow a normal distribution with mean 150 grams and standard deviation 20 grams. Weights of oranges at the supermarket follow a normal distribution with mean 200 grams and standard deviation 25 grams. If one apple and one orange was randomly selected, what is the probability their combined weight is greater than 400 grams?
Let X₁ be the weight of an apple and X₂ be the weight of an orange.
X₁ ~ N(150,20) and X₂ ~ N(200,25)
The weights of the apples and oranges is independent.
E(X₁ + X₂) = E(X₁) + E(X₂) = 150 + 200 = 350
Var(X₁ + X₂) = Var(X₁) + Var(X₂) = (20)² + (25)² = 1025
sd(X₁ + X₂) = √(1025) ≈ 32.015
z = (400 – 350)/32.015
P(X₁ + X₂ > 400) = P(Z > 1.56) = 1 – P(Z < 1.56) = 0.0594
The viscosity of a fluid can be measured in an experiment by dropping a small ball into a calibrated tube containing the fluid and observing the time in seconds it takes for the ball to drop a specified distance. For two different fluids, A and B, assume that X₁ is the time for the ball to drop to the bottom of the tube containing fluid A, and X₂ is the time for the ball to drop to the bottom of the tube containing fluid B. X₁ ~ N(20.2,0.5) and X₂ ~ N(19.8,0.3) The two times are independent. Each ball is simultaneously dropped into each of the two fluids and the time the balls take to reach the bottom of the tubes is measured. What is the probability that the ball dropped in fluid A lands before the ball dropped in fluid B?
E(X₁ – X₂) = 20.2 – 19.8 = 0.4
Var(X₁ – X₂) = (0.5)² + (0.3)² = 0.34
sd(X₁ – X₂) = √(0.34) ≈ 0.583
z = (0 – 0.4)/(0.583) ≈ -0.686
P(X₁ < X₂) = P(X₁ – X₂ < 0) = P(Z < -0.69) = 0.2451

Marching Bands Make Seismic Waves at the Rose Parade

Marching Bands Make Seismic Waves at the Rose Parade
Since 1890, Pasadena, California, has celebrated New Year’s Day with the Tournament of Roses, kicked off by the Rose Parade. Earlier this year, as horses, marching bands and flower-covered floats trekked down Colorado Boulevard, scientific research was happening right beneath their feet.
As the parade travelled down the route, fiber optic cables thinner than a human hair measured the way the ground shifted under its weight, Katherine Kornei reports for Science magazine. The results, published on May 6 in Seismological Research Letters, were gathered to calibrate the system so that it can later measure seismic activity like earthquakes.
The cables were originally installed for telecommunications, but lay inactive, or dark. When turned on, “suddenly, you have tens of thousands of sensors,” Zhongwen Zhan, a seismologist at the California Institute of Technology, tells Science magazine. “All you need to do is get permission to connect one instrument.”
The cable that Zhan used to judge marching bands’ volume is part of the Pasadena Array, set up by CalTech last November to measure earthquakes in the city and map the geological structure underneath.
“The Rose Parade, as a well-controlled event—no other traffic except the parade, traveling all in one direction at almost constant speed—provides a rare opportunity for network calibration,” Zhan explains in a statement. According to the university, the two 23-mile-long fiber optic cables provide the equivalent of 30,000 seismic sensors in a city that only has 11 traditional sensors.
To measure the seismic activity of the parade, the researchers pulsed near-infrared lasers through the cables. About once every few feet, there’s a slight imperfection in the light’s path, and the light reflects off of it onto a sensor. When the ground shifts around the cable, the imperfections move and the signal changes. That allowed the researchers to measure seismic activity that moved the fiber as little as a few nanometers.

The fiber optic cables are so sensitive, they could distinguish the seismically loudest marching band in the parade. The ground-shaking honor goes to Southern University and A&M College’s marching band—dubbed the “Human Jukebox”—from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, followed by Pasadena City College, Rancho Verde High School, Dobyns Bennett High School and the Los Angeles Unified School District bands, Ken Martinson reports for Marching.com.
The data gathered by the cables even show six minutes of seismic quiet caused when the “Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day” float got stuck at the corner of Colorado and Sierra Madre boulevards, according to the statement.
The idea of sensing vibrations with the movement of fiber optic cables originates in the 1980s, where it was invented for the military, per Science. But the applications are now expanding to anything that might be even the tiniest bit Earth-shaking. Last March, researchers working near Sacramento, California used repurposed dark cables to measure earthquakes in the region for seven months. Like the Pasadena Array intends to do, the Sacramento team used ambient seismic activity—in their case, from trains—to map the ground underneath, Rice University geophysicist Jonathan Ajo-Franklin told Kimberly Cartier at Eos last year.
The precise seismic measuring technique could have applications beyond earthquakes, too. Ajo-Franklin told Eos that the cables could be used to study a range of subsurface geology and the melting of ice sheets. And Zhan tells Science that the cables could pinpoint the location of anything moving nearby, so it could be used to record traffic patterns, identify leaking pipelines, and sense trespassers trying to dig under a barrier.
“We plan to keep the seismic array operational over the next few years, so we plan to do the same for future Rose Parades,” Zhan told Marching.com. “Hopefully with more information about the bands and even some outreach activities.”
