#HypsiglenaOchrorhynchaKlauberi in a defensive coil. #SanDiegoNightsnake, a subspecies of #CoastNightsnake. Beautiful little creature that I found under a flowerpot. It coiled only on itself to get as small and compact as it could and then slipped quietly under the house when I stepped away. It is has mildly venomous saliva that helps it digest small prey and is released gradually while it chews. The fangs that administer the venom are in the back of the mouth. So they’re only dangerous to small animals. And even full grown they’re only about a foot long. Look who I found in the hallway! I encountered this #AlligatorLizard in the kitchen the other night when I woke up to feed my cat but I couldn’t catch it. We just both awkwardly stared at each other like we’d caught each other raiding the fridge or something. It was much more exposed this time! I feel bad ‘cause you can tell it’s already lost its tail once. I hope it wasn’t my cat.
