Cigna’s nopeinator
I'm touring my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me THURSDAY (May 2) in WINNIPEG, then Calgary (May 3), Vancouver (May 4), Tartu, Estonia, and beyond!
Cigna – like all private health insurers – has two contradictory imperatives:
To keep its customers healthy; and
To make as much money for its shareholders as is possible.
Now, there's a hypothetical way to resolve these contradictions, a story much beloved by advocates of America's wasteful, cruel, inefficient private health industry: "If health is a "market," then a health insurer that fails to keep its customers healthy will lose those customers and thus make less for its shareholders." In this thought-experiment, Cigna will "find an equilibrium" between spending money to keep its customers healthy, thus retaining their business, and also "seeking efficiencies" to create a standard of care that's cost-effective.
But health care isn't a market. Most of us get our health-care through our employers, who offer small handful of options that nevertheless manage to be so complex in their particulars that they're impossible to directly compare, and somehow all end up not covering the things we need them for. Oh, and you can only change insurers once or twice per year, and doing so incurs savage switching costs, like losing access to your family doctor and specialists providers.
Cigna – like other health insurers – is "too big to care." It doesn't have to worry about losing your business, so it grows progressively less interested in even pretending to keep you healthy.
The most important way for an insurer to protect its profits at the expense of your health is to deny care that your doctor believes you need. Cigna has transformed itself into a care-denying assembly line.
Dr Debby Day is a Cigna whistleblower. Dr Day was a Cigna medical director, charged with reviewing denied cases, a job she held for 20 years. In 2022, she was forced out by Cigna. Writing for Propublica and The Capitol Forum, Patrick Rucker and David Armstrong tell her story, revealing the true "equilibrium" that Cigna has found:
https://www.propublica.org/article/cigna-medical-director-doctor-patient-preapproval-denials-insurance
Dr Day took her job seriously. Early in her career, she discovered a pattern of claims from doctors for an expensive therapy called intravenous immunoglobulin in cases where this made no medical sense. Dr Day reviewed the scientific literature on IVIG and developed a Cigna-wide policy for its use that saved the company millions of dollars.
This is how it's supposed to work: insurers (whether private or public) should permit all the medically necessary interventions and deny interventions that aren't supported by evidence, and they should determine the difference through internal reviewers who are treated as independent experts.
But as the competitive landscape for US healthcare dwindled – and as Cigna bought out more parts of its supply chain and merged with more of its major rivals – the company became uniquely focused on denying claims, irrespective of their medical merit.
In Dr Day's story, the turning point came when Cinga outsourced pre-approvals to registered nurses in the Philippines. Legally, a nurse can approve a claim, but only an MD can deny a claim. So Dr Day and her colleagues would have to sign off when a nurse deemed a procedure, therapy or drug to be medically unnecessary.
This is a complex determination to make, even under ideal circumstances, but Cigna's Filipino outsource partners were far from ideal. Dr Day found that nurses were "sloppy" – they'd confuse a mother with her newborn baby and deny care on that grounds, or confuse an injured hip with an injured neck and deny permission for an ultrasound. Dr Day reviewed a claim for a test that was denied because STI tests weren't "medically necessary" – but the patient's doctor had applied for a test to diagnose a toenail fungus, not an STI.
Even if the nurses' evaluations had been careful, Dr Day wanted to conduct her own, thorough investigation before overriding another doctor's judgment about the care that doctor's patient warranted. When a nurse recommended denying care "for a cancer patient or a sick baby," Dr Day would research medical guidelines, read studies and review the patient's record before signing off on the recommendation.
This was how the claims denial process is said to work, but it's not how it was supposed to work. Dr Day was markedly slower than her peers, who would "click and close" claims by pasting the nurses' own rationale for denying the claim into the relevant form, acting as a rubber-stamp rather than a skilled reviewer.
Dr Day knew she was slower than her peers. Cigna made sure of that, producing a "productivity dashboard" that scored doctors based on "handle time," which Cigna describes as the average time its doctors spend on different kinds of claims. But Dr Day and other Cigna sources say that this was a maximum, not an average – a way of disciplining doctors.
These were not long times. If a doctor asked Cigna not to discharge their patient from hospital care and a nurse denied that claim, the doctor reviewing that claim was supposed to spend not more than 4.5 minutes on their review. Other timelines were even more aggressive: many denials of prescription drugs were meant to be resolved in fewer than two minutes.
Cigna told Propublica and The Capitol Forum that its productivity scores weren't based on a simple calculation about whether its MD reviewers were hitting these brutal processing time targets, describing the scores as a proprietary mix of factors that reflected a nuanced view of care. But when Propublica and The Capitol Forum created a crude algorithm to generate scores by comparing a doctor's performance relative to the company's targets, they found the results fit very neatly into the actual scores that Cigna assigned to its docs:
The newsrooms’ formula accurately reproduced the scores of 87% of the Cigna doctors listed; the scores of all but one of the rest fell within 1 to 2 percentage points of the number generated by this formula. When asked about this formula, Cigna said it may be inaccurate but didn’t elaborate.
As Dr Day slipped lower on the productivity chart, her bosses pressured her bring her score up (Day recorded her phone calls and saved her emails, and the reporters verified them). Among other things, Dr Day's boss made it clear that her annual bonus and stock options were contingent on her making quota.
Cigna denies all of this. They smeared Dr Day as a "disgruntled former employee" (as though that has any bearing on the truthfulness of her account), and declined to explain the discrepancies between Dr Day's accusations and Cigna's bland denials.
This isn't new for Cigna. Last year, Propublica and Capitol Forum revealed the existence of an algorithmic claims denial system that allowed its doctors to bulk-deny claims in as little as 1.2 seconds:
https://www.propublica.org/article/cigna-pxdx-medical-health-insurance-rejection-claims
Cigna insisted that this was a mischaracterization, saying the system existed to speed up the approval of claims, despite the first-hand accounts of Cigna's own doctors and the doctors whose care recommendations were blocked by the system. One Cigna doctor used this system to "review" and deny 60,000 claims in one month.
Beyond serving as an indictment of the US for-profit health industry, and of Cigna's business practices, this is also a cautionary tale about the idea that critical AI applications can be resolved with "humans in the loop."
AI pitchmen claim that even unreliable AI can be fixed by adding a "human in the loop" that reviews the AI's judgments:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/23/maximal-plausibility/#reverse-centaurs
In this world, the AI is an assistant to the human. For example, a radiologist might have an AI double-check their assessments of chest X-rays, and revisit those X-rays where the AI's assessment didn't match their own. This robot-assisted-human configuration is called a "centaur."
In reality, "human in the loop" is almost always a reverse-centaur. If the hospital buys an AI, fires half its radiologists and orders the remainder to review the AI's superhuman assessments of chest X-rays, that's not an AI assisted radiologist, that's a radiologist-assisted AI. Accuracy goes down, but so do costs. That's the bet that AI investors are making.
Many AI applications turn out not to even be "AI" – they're just low-waged workers in an overseas call-center pretending to be an algorithm (some Indian techies joke that AI stands for "absent Indians"). That was the case with Amazon's Grab and Go stores where, supposedly, AI-enabled cameras counted up all the things you put in your shopping basket and automatically billed you for them. In reality, the cameras were connected to Indian call-centers where low-waged workers made those assessments:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/29/pay-no-attention/#to-the-little-man-behind-the-curtain
This Potemkin AI represents an intermediate step between outsourcing and AI. Over the past three decades, the growth of cheap telecommunications and logistics systems let corporations outsource customer service to low-waged offshore workers. The corporations used the excuse that these subcontractors were far from the firm and its customers to deny them any agency, giving them rigid scripts and procedures to follow.
This was a very usefully dysfunctional system. As a customer with a complaint, you would call the customer service line, wait for a long time on hold, spend an interminable time working through a proscribed claims-handling process with a rep who was prohibited from diverging from that process. That process nearly always ended with you being told that nothing could be done.
At that point, a large number of customers would have given up on getting a refund, exchange or credit. The money paid out to the few customers who were stubborn or angry enough to karen their way to a supervisor and get something out of the company amounted to pennies, relative to the sums the company reaped by ripping off the rest.
The Amazon Grab and Go workers were humans in robot suits, but these customer service reps were robots in human suits. The software told them what to say, and they said it, and all they were allowed to say was what appeared on their screens. They were reverse centaurs, serving as the human faces of the intransigent robots programmed by monopolists that were too big to care.
AI is the final stage of this progression: robots without the human suits. The AI turns its "human in the loop" into a "moral crumple zone," which Madeleine Clare Elish describes as "a component that bears the brunt of the moral and legal responsibilities when the overall system malfunctions":
https://estsjournal.org/index.php/ests/article/view/260
The Filipino nurses in the Cigna system are an avoidable expense. As Cigna's own dabbling in algorithmic claim-denial shows, they can be jettisoned in favor of a system that uses productivity dashboards and other bossware to push doctors to robosign hundreds or thousands of denials per day, on the pretense that these denials were "reviewed" by a licensed physician.

that picture🥲 definitely a baby girl that matches connor’s vibe so well, girl dad realness
can we talk them getting back together?
I love that picture. Connor and Lucie are at brunch, waiting for a table and their baby is fussy. So Connor just flips her over and rocks her to sleep.
We can only handle the angst for so long eh?
Lucie meets Connor at the doctor's office for their first ultrasound. They may be broken up, but she wouldn't deny him the opportunity to show up as a father. Connor is running a little late because traffic getting across the river was insane.
"Sorry, I'm late." He whispers to her in the waiting room. Her heart crumbles in on itself when she sees him. He came from practice, his curls are still damp and wild from the wind. She wants to run her hands through them and collapse into his chest. Have him hold her until this all feels like a bad dream.
"It's okay."
"How are you doing? How is the baby?"
"Fine."
They call her name and they both head back into the room.
They put on a show as happy, doting parents. Everything looks good with the baby. No concerns at this time and the next appointment is scheduled for a month. Connor puts it in his phone, happy to see he will be in town. If he was playing for the Devils, he would have been in Calgary.
"Do you want pictures?" The tech asks.
"Yeah, can we get two sets?" Connor asks. For some reason, this makes Lucie cry. They should only need one. "Hey..." He grabs her hand, squeezing her fingers. She pulls away. "Lu." When they get the pictures, Lucie practically sprints from the room.
"Do you need a ride?"
"No, I was going to walk."
"Let me drive you. It's too cold for you to be walking that far." Lucie can't fight anymore and he's not wrong. Winter's chill has gripped the East Coast.
"Baby, I hate this." Connor whispers when they get stuck behind a moving truck backing into a space.
"This guy sucks at driving." She mutters.
"I'm not talking about the truck." She turns to face him.
"Well, I'm not over what happened."
"Lio is fine."
"Yeah, but what you said to me after wasn't okay."
"I didn't mean it. I was caught up in the emotions of the night... the rivalry.. how mad you were at me."
"It hurt, Connor. And it felt like you turned into somebody else." He closes his eyes.
"Lucie, I can't live without you. And we're having a baby... I'll do anything to have our family back." Lucie can see the sincerity in Connor's face.
"Tell me you'll never leave us."
"Never. Not even if you try to push me out the door." He runs his fingers through the side of her hair, then grips her neck gently. Lucie closes her eyes, turning her face so her mouth kisses his palm. Her hand holds his wrist there. When her brown eyes open to meet his, Connor sighs in relief, knowing she is coming back to him. Connor throws the car in park and kisses Lucie like it's the first and last time.
Cars honk, Connor lifts his middle finger out the window at them as Lucie laughs against his mouth.

Procedures & Aftercare
Kensington Clinic offers medication and aspiration abortions, as well as procedures to help you manage a miscarriage. For your convenience and privacy, pre-operative services including ultrasound and labs, are provided at the clinic on the day of your procedure.
bortion
There are a few types of procedures provided at Kensington Clinic:
Medication Abortion from 6 to 10 weeks
Aspiration Abortion from 6 to 16 weeks
Dilation and Evacuation from 16 to 20 weeks
It is important to know the duration of your pregnancy. This is measured by the number of weeks from the first day of your last normal menstrual period. If you are travelling a long distance from Calgary, or your pregnancy is 12 weeks or more, we recommend you obtain an ultrasound before coming for your appointment to ensure we will be able to provide the care you need. When you book your appointment, a receptionist will ask for the first day of your last menstrual period, and which type of procedure you are booking for.
Medication Abortion
Medication abortion is done in Canada using a combination of medications, together called Mifegymiso. Mifegymiso includes two medications that are taken over two days.
If your pregnancy is between 6 and 10 weeks (70 days), counting from the first day of your last normal menstrual period, you may choose either a medication abortion or an aspiration abortion. Please read about both types of procedures before booking your appointment.
All assessments including ultrasound and lab work (including a blood test for Rh type and pregnancy hormone) are done on the day of your appointment, meaning you do not have to go anywhere other than Kensington Clinic for the evaluation of your pregnancy.
Before you receive the medication, we will do an ultrasound to confirm you are no more than 10 weeks (70 days) pregnant. If you are eligible for a medication abortion, you will meet with our counsellor to discuss the steps in detail. You will then meet with a nurse who will take your medical history and do blood work. After this, the physician will start the treatment.
Mifegymiso
Mifepristone: You will take the first medication, mifepristone, in the clinic. Mifepristone will destabilize the lining of your uterus to end the pregnancy. Once you take this medication these effects are not reversible.
Misoprostol: You will be given the second medication, misoprostol, to take home on the day of your appointment. You will insert the misoprostol tablets into your vagina or into the cheeks of your mouth 24-48 hours after you take the mifepristone. You may choose the time of day you take the misoprostol, but be aware that you will start to bleed heavily within 1-4 hours. As you can expect to have heavy bleeding and strong cramping, you should choose a time when you are safe to rest. The bleeding and cramping may continue for several hours. After that, bleeding may continue off and on for up to 6 weeks.
There is a 2-5% failure rate with these medications.
Side Effects
Most people will need pain medications such as extra strength ibuprofen and acetaminophen to help with the pain associated with medication abortion. Heavy bleeding resulting in soaking 1-2 large pads every hour may occur for several hours, with on and off bleeding for up to 6 weeks. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, headaches and fatigue are common side effects of the medications. Some people will find these side effects to be intense. If you are unsure you are can manage these symptoms at home, you should choose an aspiration abortion instead.
Medication Abortion vs Aspiration Abortion
Please consider carefully which type of procedure best suits you. Although there is bleeding and cramping with both aspiration and medication abortions, bleeding and cramping will be more intense and of greater duration with a medication abortion. Our staff will be happy to answer any questions you may have before you make your decision. However, if you book for one type of appointment and change your mind on the day of the appointment, you will have to rebook an appointment on another day. Please read the Comparison of Early Abortion Options
Medication Abortion Aspiration Abortion
How far along in the pregnancy can I be?
6 to 9 weeks (63 days) from the first day of
your last menstrual period.
6 to 20 weeks from the first day of day of
your last menstrual period.
Is it safe?
With both medication and aspiration abortions, there is a small risk of complications, but
abortion is at least 10 times safer than continuing a pregnancy.
Is follow-up required?
Yes. You will need to complete follow-up in 6
weeks to ensure the pregnancy has ended.
This will involve a urine test, a blood test or a
vaginal ultrasound.
No. The doctor will ensure the abortion is
complete during your appointment. You are
not required to return to the clinic for followup unless you have concerns.
How is the abortion done?
Medication causes the abortion. Heavy
bleeding with clots is common as the
pregnancy is passed, and this can continue
for several hours.
The doctor opens the cervix and removes the
pregnancy from the uterus using instruments
and suction. This usually takes 5-10 minutes.
How painful is it?
Cramps can be very strong for a number of
hours during the medication abortion. Pain
medication (such as Tylenol and Advil) can
help.
You will be given local anesthetic and IV
sedation during the procedure, and this will
help relieve pain. You may feel some cramps
during the procedure and right afterwards.
How much will I bleed?
You could have light to heavy bleeding for 1-4 weeks after either type of abortion.
Can the abortion fail?
The medication works 97% of the time. The aspiration is successful over 99% of the
time.
Can I still have children afterwards?
YES. Neither type of abortion lowers your chances of getting and staying pregnant in the
future.

dizziness.
3. Other side effects of the medication
include flu-like symptoms which may
be unpleasant.
3. You cannot drive yourself home as you
will be sedated (legally impaired for 24
hours).
4. You may need to take more time off
from work or school to manage the
side effects.
4. You need to fast (no food or drink) on
the day of the procedure. You can eat
and drink normally once it is over.
5. You may see the pregnancy tissue as
the abortion happens at hom Aspiration Abortion / D&C
An aspiration abortion is done entirely in our clinic on the day of your appointment. All assessments including an ultrasound are done in the clinic so you do not have to go anywhere other than Kensington Clinic for evaluation of your pregnancy. After the ultrasound, you will meet with our counsellor to discuss the procedure in detail. You will then meet with a nurse who will take your medical history prior to your procedure. During the procedure, you will receive sedation that helps makes you feel comfortable and relaxed.
6 to 12 weeks — If your pregnancy is between 6 and 12 weeks, the doctor gently opens the cervix a small amount in our comfortable procedure room. Once the cervix is opened appropriately, the doctor uses gentle suction to clean out the contents of the uterus. The doctor may use a spoon-shaped instrument (curette) to check the walls of the uterus for any tissue that may remain. The doctor will check to ensure all of the pregnancy is removed and the procedure is complete. The procedure will last less than 10 minutes, but your appointment will take 3 hours.
13 to 16 weeks — If your pregnancy is 13 weeks to 16 weeks, you will first be given a medication before the procedure called Misoprostol. Misoprostol softens the cervix and makes dilation easier. Misoprostol takes about 2 hours to work, so you will be given a recliner to rest in. The procedure will last up to 15 minutes as described above. Your appointment will take 4-5 hours.
You will rest in the recovery area after the procedure is over. There is generally no follow-up required after an aspiration abortion. Most patients return to normal activities the following day.
Medication Abortion vs Aspiration Abortion
Please consider carefully which type of procedure best suits you. Although there is bleeding and cramping with both aspiration and medication abortions, bleeding and cramping will be more intense and of greater duration with a medication abortion. Our staff will be happy to assist you and answer your questions and concerns before you make your appointment. However, if you book for one type of appointment and change your mind on the day of the appointment, you will have to rebook an appointment on another day. Please read the. Dilation and Evacuation
16 to 20 weeks — If you are over 16 weeks, the procedure will occur over 2 days. The cervix needs to be opened by inserting laminaria (osmotic dilators) the day before the abortion. These absorb moisture and expand, gently opening the cervix. They are left in overnight. Plan to be in the clinic 2-3 hours on the first day.
The next morning you will return to the clinic and be given Misoprostol tablets to aid in softening the cervix. These take approximately two hours to work, so you will be given a comfortable recliner to rest in. When you are ready, the physician will remove the laminaria and complete the procedure. On the second day, the procedure will take 10 to 30 minutes. Expect to be in the clinic for 4-5 hours on the second day.Miscarriage
Kensington Clinic offers timely care for treatment of miscarriages and fetal demise.
Your physician may refer you or you may book your own appointment.
When a pregnancy ends on its own, it is called a spontaneous abortion or miscarriage. Miscarriages are common, occurring in 25% of pregnancies. A miscarriage usually cannot be prevented and is no one’s fault.
There is no right or wrong way to emotionally feel about a miscarriage. Experiencing a miscarriage holds different meaning to everyone. Some want to explore ways to remember the pregnancy. Others may want to just focus on getting through the procedure on the day of the appointment. You can speak with a counsellor at Kensington Clinic if you want to explore ways to feel supported, remember the pregnancy, care for the pregnancy remains, or discuss a plan for further support after the surgical procedure. Our staff can provide resources and referrals in the community for support after a miscarriage. One organization is the Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support Centre.
You have options when it comes to caring for pregnancy remains and a counsellor will support you with whichever feels right for you. Options include:
The Silent Hopes Memorial is a program where pregnancy remains lost to miscarriage are cremated and interred at a memorial garden in Calgary. There is no charge for this program.
Private arrangements including burial or cremation can be arranged through a funeral home of your choice or the clinic will recommend a local funeral home to support you with this.
The clinic will care for the pregnancy remains in a regulated manner and no further involvement is required on your part.
If your pregnancy is very early, your doctor may have given you options to treat your pregnancy loss, including:
Waiting (expectant management) for the pregnancy to expel on its own.
Treatment with a medication called Mifegymiso will cause your uterus to contract and help your body expel the pregnancy. This is successful about 90% of the time within 2-3 days of taking it. Heavy bleeding and cramping are normal with this process. If unsuccessful, you may require a D&C.
Treatment with a procedure (D&C) to remove the pregnancy from your uterus. A procedure for miscarriage involves the removal of the pregnancy and placental tissue from the uterus. This is called Uterine Aspiration or Dilation and Curettage (D&C) for pregnancies up to 15 weeks by ultrasound.
If you are over 16 weeks by ultrasound when you miscarried, the procedure to remove the pregnancy and placental tissue is called Dilation and Evacuation (D&E). You can read about the risks of these procedures here.
If you have chosen to treat your miscarriage with a D&C, or your pregnancy is at a stage where your safest option is to be treated with a D&C or D&E, your doctor can refer you to a hospital or Kensington Clinic for the procedure. You may also book your own appointment at Kensington Clinic. At Kensington Clinic we will make every effort to see you within a few days of your referral or request.
Procedures are done using IV sedation. You may feel very drowsy and not remember much after, but you will not be completely asleep. For procedures under 16 weeks, you can expect to be in the clinic for 2-3 hours. For procedures over 16 weeks, your stay in the clinic may be closer to 4-5 hours, or you may be required to come for two appointments on consecutive days. When you book your appointment, we will let you know what you can expect. You must arrange to have someone drive you home.
We will require copies of all the diagnostic investigations that have determined your pregnancy has ended or is non-viable. If you and your doctor have established you are eligible for genetic testing to determine the cause of your miscarriage, your doctor will need to forward the appropriate requisitions for the tests to us and Kensington Clinic will ensure this is done.
For more information or to book an appointment,Risks of Procedures
Aspiration Abortion or D&C
Uterine aspiration, D&C, and D&E are some of the most common procedures in Canada. The rate of complications is less than 2% and most complications are minor and easily treated. If compared to pregnancy and childbirth, these procedures have fewer complications. However, like any procedure there are risks you should be aware of.
Infection in the uterus occurs in 0.1 to 2% of aspiration procedures. You will be given one dose of antibiotics before your procedure to help prevent this from happening.
Retained tissue (some pregnancy tissue is left in the uterus). This occurs in 0.5 to 1% of aspiration procedures. Further medical care may be necessary.
Continued pregnancy or failed abortion. This is rare with aspiration abortions and more likely if the uterus has an unusual shape, if the pregnancy is very early (less than 6 weeks), or if the pregnancy is not in the uterus. You may have to return for another visit or be referred to another physician. With a normal pregnancy in a normal uterus, there is less than a 0.1% chance of this occurring.
Post-abortion hematometra. This is a rare condition where blood builds up more quickly than it can come out. It is unpleasant but is not dangerous, and is treated by repeating the uterine aspiration procedure. This condition occurs in about o.1% of procedures.
Excessive bleeding or hemorrhage. Occurs in about 0.1% of procedures. It is sometimes caused by failure of the uterus to contract or by retained tissue. Usually this can be controlled by medications in the clinic. If heavy bleeding cannot be controlled in the clinic, transfer to hospital would be required.
Injury to the uterus or other internal organs occurs in less than 0.1% of procedures. Transfer to a hospital and surgery to repair the injury may be required. Removal of the uterus is required in approximately 1 in 10,000 procedures.
Allergic reaction to any of the medications given to you, or to latex or other materials in the clinic. Most reactions can be treated in the clinic. A very severe reaction would require transfer to a hospital.
The risk of death related to surgical abortion is about 1 in 1,000,000. Most deaths are related to general anaesthesia or other medical circumstances. The risk of death during pregnancy and childbirth is ten times greater.
Medication Abortion
Retained tissue (some pregnancy tissue is left in the uterus). This occurs more frequently in medication abortions. Sometimes the uterus is unable to expel the tissue and further medical care is necessary.
Continued pregnancy or failed abortion. There is a 2-5% failure rate with these medications and if they have failed to induce an abortion the doctor will discuss a treatment plan with you.
Excessive bleeding or hemorrhage. It is sometimes caused by failure of the uterus to contract or by retained tissue. As this will be happening outside the clinic, you should contact the clinic if you are experiencing hemorrhage, and you may need to proceed to the hospital for medical care.
Infection in the uterus occurs rarely. You may need antibiotics to manage the infection.
Allergic reaction to any of the medications given to you can rarely occur. A very severe reaction would require visit to a hospital.
The risk of death related to abortion is about 1 in 1,000,000. Most deaths are related to excessive bleeding. The risk of death during pregnancy and childbirth is ten times greater

Maternity Photoshoot Calgary: Capturing the Beauty of Motherhood
Newborn Photographer Chestermere is a special way to capture the beauty and wonder of pregnancy, preserving memories of a momentous time in a woman's life. In Calgary, the growing trend of maternity photography allows expecting mothers to embrace their journey and celebrate their transformation with stunning, personalized portraits. Why Calgary Is a Great Location for Maternity Photoshoots Calgary offers an impressive variety of scenic backdrops for a maternity photoshoot, from the breathtaking Rocky Mountains to peaceful urban parks and vibrant cityscapes.
Whether you're drawn to the tranquility of nature or the excitement of the city, Calgary has a location that can perfectly match your vision. For nature lovers, places like Fish Creek Provincial Park, Nose Hill Park, and Prince's Island Park are ideal for photoshoots that highlight the natural beauty of the region.
These parks offer lush greenery, serene walking paths, and picturesque lakes, which provide a peaceful and soothing ambiance. In winter, these locations transform into winter wonderlands, making for magical, snow-dusted images. Alternatively, for those who prefer an urban vibe, downtown Calgary provides a blend of modern architecture and historic charm. The unique buildings and murals found in neighborhoods such as Inglewood or the East Village create bold and artistic backdrops. Choosing the Right Photographer One of the most important decisions for your Maternity Photoshoot Calgary is selecting the right photographer.
Calgary is home to many skilled professionals who specialize in maternity photography and understand how to bring out the best in every mother-to-be. Look for a photographer with experience in this type of photography, as it requires a particular sensitivity to lighting, angles, and comfort. It's essential to communicate with your photographer about your vision for the shoot. Whether you want a dramatic, glamorous session or something more relaxed and natural, finding a photographer who aligns with your style will help you achieve the best results. Most photographers will offer packages that include consultations, multiple outfit changes, and different location options, allowing for flexibility in crafting the perfect session.
Timing Your Photoshoot The ideal time for a maternity photoshoot is between 28 to 36 weeks of pregnancy. This window captures the perfect balance where the baby bump is prominent, but the mother is still comfortable enough to pose for photos. Every pregnancy is different, so it's important to schedule a session at a time that works best for you.
Additionally, consider the season when planning your photoshoot. Calgary experiences all four seasons distinctly, each offering unique photo opportunities. Spring and summer are popular for their vibrant colors and warm weather, while fall offers striking foliage. Winter, though colder, can create some of the most memorable images, with snowy landscapes and cozy, bundled-up looks. Incorporating Personal Touches A maternity photoshoot is a deeply personal experience, so incorporating elements that are meaningful to you can make the photos even more special.
Some women like to include their partner, children, or pets in the shoot, creating a family-focused session. Others may choose to showcase items that are significant to the pregnancy, such as baby shoes, ultrasound images, or even nursery items.
Outfit choices also play a crucial role in shaping the tone of the photoshoot. Flowing dresses are a popular choice for their elegant and ethereal look, but some women prefer fitted outfits that emphasize the curves of pregnancy. Neutral colors often work well, but don’t be afraid to experiment with bolder shades that reflect your personality. Props, too, can add an extra layer of meaning.
Floral crowns, blankets, or balloons can give the photoshoot a whimsical or celebratory feel, while simple props like a comfortable chair or a vintage suitcase can help set the scene without overwhelming the focus on the mother-to-be.

The Role of Physiotherapy in Recovering from Motor Vehicle Accidents in Calgary
Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are a common occurrence in Calgary, leading to a range of injuries that can significantly impact an individual's quality of life. The road to recovery after an MVA can be long and challenging, but physiotherapy offers an effective solution to help individuals regain their strength, mobility, and overall well-being. In this article, we will explore the role of physiotherapy in recovering from motor vehicle accidents in Calgary, discussing its benefits, the types of injuries it can address, and the various techniques used in treatment.
Understanding the Impact of Motor Vehicle Accidents
Motor vehicle accidents can cause a wide array of injuries, from minor bruises and sprains to severe trauma such as fractures, spinal injuries, and whiplash. These injuries can lead to chronic pain, reduced mobility, and a prolonged recovery period. In Calgary, the cold and icy winters further increase the risk of MVAs, making it crucial for residents to have access to effective rehabilitation options.
The Importance of Early Intervention
Early intervention is key to a successful recovery following an MVA. Prompt physiotherapy treatment can help prevent the development of chronic conditions and ensure a faster, more efficient healing process. In Calgary, numerous physiotherapy clinics specialize in treating MVA-related injuries, providing personalized care tailored to each patient's unique needs.
Benefits of Physiotherapy for MVA Recovery
Physiotherapy offers a multitude of benefits for individuals recovering from motor vehicle accidents in Calgary:
Pain Relief: Physiotherapy techniques, such as manual therapy, massage, and electrotherapy, can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation, providing much-needed relief to MVA victims.
Restored Mobility: Through targeted exercises and stretches, physiotherapists can help patients regain their range of motion and improve flexibility, essential for performing daily activities.
Strength Building: Injuries from MVAs can weaken muscles and joints. Physiotherapy focuses on strengthening these areas, promoting overall physical fitness and preventing future injuries.
Enhanced Healing: Physiotherapy stimulates blood circulation and promotes tissue repair, accelerating the healing process and reducing recovery time.
Customized Treatment Plans: Each MVA injury is unique, requiring a personalized approach to treatment. Physiotherapists in Calgary design customized rehabilitation programs to address specific injuries and individual patient goals.
Common Injuries Treated with Physiotherapy
Motor vehicle accidents can result in a variety of injuries, all of which can benefit from physiotherapy. Some of the most common MVA-related injuries treated by physiotherapists in Calgary include:
Whiplash
Whiplash is a common injury resulting from the sudden jerking motion of the head and neck during a collision. Symptoms include neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and dizziness. Physiotherapy for whiplash typically involves manual therapy, gentle stretching, and exercises to strengthen the neck muscles.
Soft Tissue Injuries
Soft tissue injuries, such as sprains, strains, and contusions, are frequent outcomes of MVAs. These injuries can cause pain, swelling, and limited mobility. Physiotherapists use techniques like massage, ultrasound therapy, and specific exercises to promote healing and restore function.
Fractures and Dislocations
Bone fractures and joint dislocations often occur in serious MVAs. Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation process by providing exercises to rebuild strength and mobility, preventing stiffness and ensuring proper healing.
Spinal Injuries
Spinal injuries can be severe and may lead to long-term complications. Physiotherapy for spinal injuries focuses on pain management, improving spinal alignment, and enhancing overall mobility through targeted exercises and manual therapy.
Physiotherapy Techniques for MVA Recovery
Physiotherapists in Calgary utilize a range of techniques to aid in the recovery of MVA victims. Some of the most effective methods include:
Manual Therapy
Manual therapy involves hands-on techniques to manipulate and mobilize muscles, joints, and soft tissues. This helps reduce pain, improve flexibility, and restore normal movement patterns.
Exercise Therapy
Exercise therapy is a cornerstone of physiotherapy, involving a series of tailored exercises to strengthen muscles, improve balance, and enhance overall physical fitness. These exercises are designed to suit the specific needs and abilities of each patient.
Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy uses electrical currents to stimulate nerves and muscles, reducing pain and promoting tissue healing. Techniques such as TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) and ultrasound therapy are commonly used in physiotherapy clinics.
Heat and Cold Therapy
Heat and cold therapy are simple yet effective methods to manage pain and inflammation. Applying heat helps relax muscles and improve blood flow, while cold therapy reduces swelling and numbs pain.
Education and Lifestyle Advice
Physiotherapists also provide valuable education and lifestyle advice to help patients manage their injuries and prevent future problems. This includes ergonomic recommendations, posture correction, and guidance on safe physical activities.
Choosing the Right Physiotherapy Clinic in Calgary
Selecting the right physiotherapy clinic is crucial for a successful recovery from an MVA. When choosing a clinic in Calgary, consider the following factors:
Experience and Expertise: Look for clinics with experienced physiotherapists who specialize in treating MVA-related injuries. Their expertise ensures you receive the best possible care.
Comprehensive Services: Opt for clinics that offer a wide range of services, including manual therapy, exercise therapy, and electrotherapy. A holistic approach to treatment is essential for comprehensive recovery.
Personalized Care: Each patient's injury and recovery process is unique. Choose a clinic that provides personalized treatment plans tailored to your specific needs and goals.
Convenient Location: Accessibility is important, especially if you require frequent visits. Select a clinic that is conveniently located in Calgary to minimize travel time and ensure regular attendance.
Summary
Recovering from a motor vehicle accident in Calgary can be a daunting journey, but physiotherapy offers a proven and effective path to regaining health and well-being. With its focus on pain relief, restored mobility, and overall strength, physiotherapy plays a vital role in the rehabilitation process. Blog Post #7 - Rationale Roughs
The Calgary Stampede Event Poster
Print Design
The Calgary Stampede, a 10-day iconic event in Alberta, known as "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth," celebrates western rodeo culture and attracts global visitors. The challenge was to create a poster capturing the event's spirit. The design draws inspiration from rodeo events and cultural experiences, featuring a bold colour palette symbolizing Alberta's blue flag, Canada’s red maple leaf, and the golden yellow wheat fields of the prairies. Iconic symbols like cowboy boots and horseshoes convey the essence of the stampede, while a minimal, high-impact design inspired by vintage beer cans and postage stamps adds a touch of tradition and heritage.

Nude - Fragrance For All Packaging Design
Packaging Design
NUDE is a unisex fragrance line embodying inclusivity, diversity, quality, and sustainability with a cruelty-free ethos. Challenges included appealing to both genders while maintaining a balance between affordability and a high-end feel. I opted for recyclable glass bottles with wooden lids, ensuring a sustainable vessel. The 2-piece box, featuring an outer recycled cardstock and a coloured inner portion, enhances the product's eco-friendly appeal. Each coloured box represents a unique scent with corresponding icons, facilitating easy differentiation. The final result is a high-quality product, with the organic texture of the wooden lids and recycled cardstock conveying sustainability, while the bold colours and icons contribute to a distinctive aesthetic. The 2-piece box enhances the consumer experience, requiring engagement with both the product and its thoughtfully designed packaging.

3. Madrona Imaging
Branding and Print Design
Madrona Imaging, situated in Nanaimo, BC, is a health clinic providing x-ray, ultrasound, and mammography services. The challenge was to craft a distinct brand identity aligning with their core values of integrity and precision, setting them apart from other healthcare providers. The logo features a sleek, squared sans-serif typeface alongside an abstract brand symbol. One half represents a Madrona tree, while the inverted half symbolizes a commitment to transparency and integrity in healthcare.
The color palette comprises Ocean Teal, blending the calming essence of blue with the invigorating qualities of green, signifying clarity and renewal. Electric Lime exudes liveliness, and Crisp White provides a clean and professional grounding. Integrating these elements into the clinic's interior was essential not only to distinguish Madrona Imaging within the healthcare sector but also to demonstrate their commitment to prioritizing patients' well-being. The curated interior space reflects a professional, modern, and inviting atmosphere.
