“No way in hell am I going skiing. What if I break my leg or something? Who’s going to explain that to Bedsy?”
“Nathan, there’s this thing called fun. You should try it sometime.” EJ chirps back, clapping a hand on Nate’s shoulder as the Canadian rolls his eyes.
“Just don’t break your leg, Nate. Simple as that. We’re doing this in the spirit of team bonding! It’s a team holiday trip.” Gabe says in response with a genuine smile on his perfect face.
“Yay! Team bonding!” Newy exclaims, a little over the top which makes several of them laugh including Cale.
“Can we get hot chocolate after?” JT chimes in, voice serious but hopeful like that’s the only thing that can convince him to get on the slope.
“Sure. Hot chocolate after. Now let’s go!”
Nate shuffles forward, grumbling to himself and the sight makes Cale chuckle. He’s not the biggest fan of skiing either, but he always enjoys any time he can spend with the guys. No matter what activity it includes.
This time, it just happens to be skiing at a resort in Vail. Gabe decided a team retreat would be a fun idea leading up to the holidays and you can’t say no to the captain.
So here Cale is, awkwardly standing in the lobby dressed in his ski gear and surrounded by his teammates who all have mixed reactions to what’s about to happen.
He’s just about to ask Nate if he even knows how to ski, because if not they might actually have to think up a reason to give Bedsy just in case, when a flash of bright red hair catches his eye near the entrance of the lodge.
At first, Cale thinks it’s the resident ginger of the team. But JT is ahead of him, being jostled around by Newy and Bo, so it can’t be him. Why does he care anyway?
But then, as he looks back to hopefully get another glimpse, he realizes why he cares. He realizes why the splash of red captured his attention in the first place. Because it was that exact red hair he used to see every day, run his fingers through and adored so much. Cale is frozen in place, gaze locked on the girl he still loves with his entire being. The one who got away.
Before he can think or see the confused look on Nate’s face, he’s leaving the group behind and trudging across the lobby towards the familiar red hair. He’s nervous, really nervous, but he hasn’t seen her in a few years now. And if he misses this opportunity, he wouldn’t ever forgive himself.
“Evelyn.” Cale doesn’t even recognize his own voice. He gently taps her on the shoulder and all the wind is knocked out of his lungs. Maybe it’s the time apart or Cale’s simply forgotten how gorgeous she is, but when she looks at him, he swears she is the most beautiful person he’s ever seen.
“Cale?” She asks in shock, brows furrowing for a moment before a beaming smile blossoms across her lips. “Cale! Ohmygosh, how are you? It’s been so long.” Evelyn gives him a quick hug and suddenly, Cale is thinking about how he’s going to have to thank Landy for this silly idea.
“It’s nice to see you.”
“You too! I didn’t know you skied. A new hobby?” Evelyn teases. It’s like nothing ever happened, no time has passed. But Cale knows that’s too good to be true.
“No, no. A team bonding trip.” Cale explains, nodding towards the door where the team left moments ago. “I’m not very good anyway.” He can feel his cheeks heating up with blush, the familiar pink becoming apparent in mere seconds.
“Oh, please. I’ve seen you skate and know you’ve got balance and coordination like no one else.”
“Uh, well, thanks.” He murmurs shyly, rubbing the back of his neck. Cale knows the inevitable end of conversation is coming. Where she tells him how great it’s been to see him and she disappears from his life again. His mind is whirring to find something to say just to keep her talking, to keep her in front of him.
He isn’t quick enough.
“It’s been nice seeing you, Cale. And I’d love to catch up more, but I have to go. Have fun on the slopes and tell everyone hi for me!” Evelyn says cheerfully, giving him the smile that he still loves before he gives his own goodbye and she’s gone.
“Dude, who’s the redhead?” Nate’s voice snaps Cale back to the present. Of course, Nate stayed behind and saw all of that. “And why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost? You’re not gonna get a girl looking that terrified.”
“Geez, thanks.” Cale mutters, turning to face Nate who’s wearing a look of concern mixed with curiosity.
“Who’s the redhead?” He asks again. Nate is nothing but relentless, Cale should know this by now, and he’s going to have to explain in order for the topic to be dropped.
“Her name is Evelyn. We dated for awhile back when I was at UMass and we tried to keep it going long distance when I came here, but it didn’t work out.”
“But you’re still in love with her.” It’s not a question, but a statement.
Damn it. Why couldn’t EJ have seen the whole interaction? He would’ve just teased Cale about having a thing for gingers. Or even Gabe who would’ve given him some kind of pep talk. But no, Nate had to be the witness and he’s so observant that nothing can be hidden from him.
“Yeah, I’m still in love with her.” Cale admits, voice full of defeat and longing.
“Then why didn’t you just make your move?” The question falls from Nate’s lips with a tone of incredulously and Cale sighs. There’s so much more than them just being exes.
“She just got out of a long term relationship. They were together for a year and half or something like that. Mom told me. I can’t just jump in there like she’s okay and the last thing I want is to be a rebound.”
But Cale can’t help but wonder what exactly Evelyn is doing here. Last he heard, she had graduated from UMass and returned home to Calgary where she got her first big job and her own apartment. Plus, she had told Cale himself when they were trying to make long distance work that she couldn’t see herself living in Colorado. Yet she’s here.
Does she live here now? Or maybe she’s just visiting. That’s more realistic. But who would she be coming to see? She doesn’t know anyone in the entire state of Colorado besides him. At least that Cale knows of.
“Cale?” Nate’s voice is soft, but snaps the defenseman back to the present.
“Huh?”
“I think you should talk to her. You never know what could come of it. And you still love her! Doesn’t matter what happened in the past, I think she needs you more than you realize right now, especially coming out of a relationship like that.”
“Thanks, Gabe.” Cale says pointedly, giving Nate a look that’s supposed to be mean but he doubts it comes across the way he intends. Nate’s smile gives that away. “When did you become so wise and captain-like?”
“Just-” Nate starts, putting a hand on Cale’s shoulder shaking his head at the chirps before continuing. “Think about it. Okay?”
That’s easy, but Cale doesn’t say that out loud. All he’s going to be doing until he sees her again is thinking. Thinking about her.

Cale gets answers to all but one question when he calls his mom the next day. He barely gets through saying hello before the news bursts out.
“Mom, you’ll never guess who I saw yesterday.”
“Who?” Laura asks with curiosity.
“Evelyn. Eve, like my Eve.” The nickname rolls off his tongue naturally. Cale’s the only one who ever got to call her Eve and saying it now feels so right. Like there’s still a chance she could be his Eve again. Not Evelyn like she is for everyone else. Eve.
“Oh, honey. Did you really?”
“Yeah, we’re on this mini team retreat right now, Gabe’s idea, and I saw her in the lobby before we went skiing.” He explains, taking a deep breath. “Did you know she would be in Colorado?”
It’s a loaded question, Cale knows that, but he has to know. He’s known Evelyn pretty much his whole life and even after they broke up, their families still stayed in touch. He just needed to know more about why he saw her in the last place he ever would’ve expected.
“Um, not exactly.”
“Mom!”
“I didn’t know, Cale! Her mom said that after the breakup, Eve decided she needed a fresh start and left Calgary. That’s the last I heard. But apparently she landed in Colorado if you saw her.”
Cale is silent for a moment, absorbing everything Laura just said. Nate’s words from the other day become clear again and he knows what he’s going to do next.
“I know it might be out of nowhere, but I think she could use a friend, Cale. She’s taking this really hard and I can’t imagine how scary it might be also being somewhere completely new too. If you see her again, ask if she wants to get a coffee or something simple. You know how she loves the wintertime and that might be tainted now with everything going on.” Laura says softly and Cale knows she’s right. In fact, that’s almost exactly what he’s thinking.
“Okay, you’re right. Thanks, Mom.” Cale replies before they exchange the usual love you’s and see you soon’s. He lets out a sigh of relief and leans back against the couch. It might not have been the answers he was looking for, but now he at least knows what he has to do.
And if there’s any chance of getting back together, even just the tiniest little sliver of hope, Cale has to know. But first and foremost, he has to be the friend that Eve needs more than ever.

Not even a week into the new year, Cale finds himself back at the ski lodge where the team was during the holidays for Gabe’s grand idea. He has no idea if he’ll see Eve here again, like maybe the run-in was some twist of fate and only destined to happen once, but he has to try. As he’s running through all the options of what to say to her, Cale spots the familiar flash of red hair and his heart starts to race.
Now or never.
He walks up to the front desk in the lobby where Eve is talking to someone on the opposite side, her sweet smile on full display. Before Cale can even say anything, she senses someone next to her and turns to offer a kind look but then realizes who it is.
“Cale! How crazy is this?” Eve says, her voice full of happiness. She guides him away from the front desk, thanking the employee she was just talking to and that’s when Cale seemingly loses control of his tongue.
“Eve, hi. It’s really great to see you again.”
“You too. Do you come here often? I didn’t think you’d have a lot of time to take up skiing or anything else with how busy your schedule is with hockey.” She asks, her big brown eyes holding Cale’s gaze.
“I- uh, no, I don’t. I was hoping to see you again actually.”
“Really?”
“Yeah,” Cale starts, unsure of how to phrase what he wants to say, but Eve is looking at him so fondly and he can’t put a single thought together. “Look, I heard about what happened and I’m really sorry things ended that way. You don’t deserve that and even after all this time, I still care about you. A lot. Plus, you’re new to Colorado so I wanted to let you know I’m here for you and would be happy to show you my favorite places around here or maybe do some of the things we used to do together to cheer you up. It’s up to you.” He trails off, hoping she doesn’t notice how nervous he is.
Eve doesn’t say anything for a moment and Cale worries he already messed this up. He’s ready to face the rejection and continue on with his life as if this never happened, until Eve’s smooth voice cuts through his thoughts.
“You’re just as sweet as you were at UMass. Nothing’s changed.” She whispers, her cheeks becoming a deep color of pink. Cale swears he’s never seen anyone so adorable. Her beaming smile is directed at Cale for the first time in years and he doesn’t want that to change. “I would love that. Whether it’s seeing your favorite places or doing what used to be our favorite things. Sounds perfect to me.”
“Yeah?” Cale asks, trying to mask any shock in his voice.
“Yeah. So when do we start?”
“What about right now?” He giggles as Eve nods with excitement. It feels a lot like the old days when they would spend any possible moment together, laughing and sharing kisses without a care in the world. That kind of happiness is one Cale wants back and hopes Eve feels the same way too.
“Okay, then let’s go, Makar. We’ve got quite a lot to catch up on.”
And just like that a new routine is born. Every waking moment the two of them have is spent together. They start with seeing Cale’s favorite places around Denver, spanning between the variety of tourist attractions and the little hidden gems of the city.
Slowly, but surely, Evelyn opens up about the breakup and it physically pains Cale to see her hurting over some stupid guy who just lost the best thing that would ever happen to him. He offers nothing but his support and kind words because despite the feelings he might have for her, he still cares about her more than anything.
An unspoken list of things they used to do together, especially during the winter time, is put together. Driving around to see the Christmas lights while drinking hot chocolate, making cinnamon rolls, playing crib, a spontaneous snowball fight and so much more. The more time spent together, the more it feels as if they’re back at UMass and completely in love.
Cale doesn’t push. If all he gets is Eve as a close friend, he’ll take it. She’s back in his life and he couldn’t ask for anything more.
But with each passing day and activity done together, Eve remembers exactly why she fell in love with Cale in the first place. And it’s more obvious than ever that her feelings for him never fully disappeared. Her heart seems to be healing because of him and although she can’t admit she wants to give them another try just yet, there is something she’s ready for that Cale hasn’t mentioned once since they saw each other again at the lodge.
“Hey Cale?” She asks softly, looking up at him across the table. The cafe isn’t that busy during this time of day and Eve learned quickly this place has the best breakfast so this morning her and Cale decided to grab a bite before he had to go to morning skate. This used to be a regular occurrence for them back in college. Getting up early, sharing breakfast together while giggling over everything and then going their separate ways until Cale was back from practice. Eve starts to feel a weird sense of deja vu, but pushes through.
“Hm?” Cale hums in response, taking a sip of his coffee before meeting her gaze. He looks so adorable in the early morning light that she can’t stand it. Cheeks rosy as always, wearing a warm knitted sweater and his hair is just the perfect kind of messy, sticking up in all different directions.
“How’s the team doing? Do you like playing here?” The questions tumble off her lips innocently, but shock Cale for a moment.
“You- sorry, you want to talk about hockey?” Cale shakes his head in disbelief, blue eyes searching Eve’s face for any sign of worrying emotions.
In the last few weeks, there hasn’t been a single mention of the sport Cale plays despite the two of them planning around his practice, game and travel schedule. Eve hasn’t addressed it yet because in the end, hockey is what took him away from her, it’s what broke their relationship when it couldn’t have been better. But now, realizing she’s falling in love with him again, Eve knows talking about hockey isn’t going to ruin anything.
In fact, now, she can’t wait to hear about Cale’s career here in Colorado.
“Yeah, I do. If this,” Eve gestures between the two of them, “is going to work, I can’t be scared of something that we had no control over in the past even if it’s the thing that separated us. Plus, it’s such a big part of your life so I want to know everything, Mr. Norris and Conn Smythe Trophy winner.”
Cale laughs, that beautiful smile overtaking his face and pure joy radiating off of him. “Well someone has been keeping up, huh?”
“Please, it’s hard not to when everyone back home couldn’t stop talking about you during the playoffs and then your day with the Cup…”
Without any hesitation, Cale jumps right into telling her about everything hockey related since he got to Denver. Joining the team during the playoffs, winning the Calder, all the fun and not so happy moments with the guys over the years, how he’s trained in the offseason and of course, the biggest moment of all, winning the Cup last season.
Cale’s in the middle of telling a funny story about Nate, one of thousands, when he catches a glimpse of the time on Eve’s phone. 9:15.
“Oh shit. Eve, I’ve got to go. Morning skate.” He says quickly, kissing her cheek and making sure the check is paid for. “I’m sorry, I totally lost track of time. You’ll hear the rest of the story later I promise.”
“It’s all good, Cale. Have fun at practice! I’ll see you later, okay?” Eve says, her voice soft and Cale feels his heart swell. “And thank you for telling me about hockey again. I’m so proud of everything you’ve accomplished.”
“Anytime, Eve. And thank you.” With that, he offers her the kindest smile before heading out to the rink.

Cale is late. Well, not technically since morning skate doesn’t start until ten, but by his standards he’s late. He already missed the usual routine of getting ready with Nate and catching up with Devon. And the worse part is, he doesn’t have a single clue about how he’s going to explain this to the guys who will definitely be asking him what happened.
But Cale knows he isn’t good at lying and at the same time, there’s no way the team can know what he’s up to. Even if it’s making him way happier than usual.
Which of course, EJ notices right away as he’s hustling into the locker room.
“Look who decided to show up! Nice of you to join us, Caler.”
“Sorry,” Cale mumbles in response, heading right to his stall to get ready for practice. But he feels his cheeks heat up and knows it’s a dead giveaway.
“What took you so long? You’re usually here with this maniac way earlier than need be.” EJ pushes, gesturing to Nate for a moment before all his attention focuses on Cale. A beat of silence lasts too long and somehow EJ knows exactly what’s going on.
“It’s a girl, isn’t it?”
“EJ,” Nate warns, ready to step in since he knows Cale has been talking to Eve again, but everyone knows EJ is mostly all talk. The chances of him overstepping is slim to none. It’s just fun and games. Except Cale’s lack of response and rosier than usual cheeks say everything he doesn’t put into words.
“I just got coffee and breakfast with a friend. We’ve been catching up lately after not seeing each other for a while.” Not a lie. That’s partially true and he hopes it’s enough to convince the team to lose interest.
“With a girl!” EJ says with a laugh, clapping him on the shoulder. “They grow up so fast, don’t they?”
And just like that, everyone moves on. Almost everyone. While the rest of the team filters out of the locker room to hit the ice, Nate gently taps Cale with his stick and gives him that same knowing look that he did a few weeks ago.
“How’s it going? With… ya know?”
Cale kind of wishes the floor will swallow him, but he knows Nate is being nice. He’s just not used to talking about his love life with any of the guys because there hasn’t been much of a love life to talk about.
“Really well actually. Nothing’s happened and neither of us are pushing, but it’s been great just spending time together again. I miss that, you know? It’s great to have her back.” Cale explains, cheeks becoming pink with blush as he talks. Nate offers a genuine smile in response and bumps his shoulder.
“That’s good. You deserve her. So I’m rooting for you.”
“Thanks, Nate. Means a lot.” He shrugs softly, trying not to let his thoughts wander.
“Just an idea though, maybe see if she wants to come to a game. She might like seeing you play.” Nate says out of nowhere and Cale just nods, unable to think of a proper response. They walk out to the rink together and the moment Cale takes the ice, all his worries fall away.
But beneath it all, Cale can’t help but think about how Eve has just started asking about hockey again. And he’d be lying if the idea of her in his jersey, cheering him on in the stands and waiting to greet him afterwards didn’t make his heart race.

This is crazy and Evelyn knows it. She hasn’t seen Cale play since college when she would sit with her friends and the other girlfriends in a much smaller rink. He might not like her being at a game even if that sounds far fetched. Yet, here she is right against the glass on the Avs side of the ice at Ball Arena.
The sign she’s clutching in her hands is another reminder of how insane this whole idea is. Although it will help her blend in among the other fans who have brought their own homemade signs as well. But it’s too late to back out now, and if there’s one thing Eve is sure of, it’s how she feels about Cale.
So she waits at the glass in anticipation of seeing the team skate out for warmups. The same giddiness that used to run through her veins when she attended the games on campus returns and realizes she’s missed this feeling without even knowing it. Sure, she’s watched the Avs games at home from the comfort of her couch, but this is a whole different experience that she is happy to have back.
The only person that knows she’s here right now is Nate. He's the only one who knows more than he should about her and Cale, which she didn’t think was ideal until she came up with this bright idea. Nate only encouraged her and even helped organize all the details to ensure everything about the surprise goes according to plan.
That also means he’s the only one who won’t have an outrageous reaction to her sign.
Eve snaps out of her thoughts as the lights begin to come up, illuminating the ice in the usual brightness that she has grown accustomed to. Her eyes focus on the tunnel next to the bench while pressing the sign against the glass. She has no idea if Cale will even see it, but everything in her is hoping he does and if not, one of his teammates points it out to him. He’s followed in Nate’s footsteps of being zeroed in during warmups and the fan interaction falls to the wayside in terms of importance.
Tonight will be different.
The team skates out onto the ice and cheers erupt from the crowd. An instant smile spreads across Eve’s lips when the familiar number eight steps onto the rink, immediately skating around effortlessly. As the guys settle into their usual warm up routines, Eve keeps an eye on Cale as if she could look anywhere else. Nate skates by and taps his stick against the glass, a beaming grin of his on display.
“He’s going to flip out.” Nate says, shaking his head and tapping a fist bump against the glass. Eve does the same with a giggle before he skates off to continue with drills.
It’s then when she spots JT and Mikko whispering to each other opposite of where she’s standing. Mikko’s got that mischievous look in his gaze as the ginger next to him can’t stop smiling. They’ve noticed the sign and Eve feels her nerves spike. It’s only a matter of time before they bring it to Cale’s attention.
“Hey, Caler! Why didn’t you tell us you finally invited your girl to a game?” JT calls out, giving Cale a playful bump to the shoulder.
“What?” Cale responds, looking up from his stick handling in confusion. “I didn’t invite anyone.”
“Well, that sure looks like Evelyn to me.”
“JT, don’t be- ohmygod. It is Evelyn.”
As an unbelievable amount of shock rolls through him, Cale can’t help but beam in her direction. He would recognize her fiery hair color and beautiful smile anywhere. She’s here at one of his games. She’s really here. He’s been waiting to have this back for so long. His eyes never move away from her even if he can hear JT and Mikko chuckling nearby.
Despite the happiness coursing through his veins as he slowly skates over, he tries to take in every detail of this moment. Eve is wearing what she called her “lucky jersey” from Cale’s time at UMass. Seeing her in the familiar maroon and silver jersey with the number 16 on the sleeves and a simple A on the chest makes Cae’s heart soar. His last name is on the back of that jersey and even better, she’s kept it after all this time even if it’s been years since she saw him play in Massachusetts. Cale doesn’t even have enough time to process all this when he realizes what is written on the sign she’s pressing against the glass.
“Even in burgundy and blue, my heart still belongs to you #8!”
All the air in his lungs is stolen away and everything else seems to fall away except for Eve. Not only is she here at a game, but her sign holds the confession that Cale has been wondering about since they ran into each other again.
She still loves him. He doesn’t know if her feelings ever went away or she fell in love again, but Cale can’t believe this is happening. After all this time, her heart still belongs to him just like his belongs to her.
“Hi,” he murmurs, pressing his hand against the glass when he comes face to face with Eve. She waves in response and the smile he gets in return rivals the sun. He pulls a puck over and flips it up onto his stick before tossing it over the glass. The moment she catches it, looking up with the most hopeful expression on her face, Cale takes the leap of faith. “I love you so much.”
Evelyn doesn’t think she can smile any bigger and swears her heart might explode with pure joy. This beautiful, sweet, amazing boy just said the three words she’s been waiting to hear since the day things ended. Cale loves her. Nothing else in the world matters more than that.
“I love you too.”
Cale taps the glass a few more times before ever so slowly skating away. His cheeks are pink with blush and the smile on his lips won’t be going away anytime soon. Eve gives him a wave, holding the puck to her chest where her heart is racing. With his mind on his girl, Cale returns to the usual warmups and knows this game is a must win more than it was before.
Because of Eve.

The Avs win 4-1 and Eve doesn’t think she’s ever had this much fun before. All of Cale’s games at UMass were an experience, but that doesn’t even come close to how happy and excited she is when the buzzer sounds and the boys spill onto the ice for hugs and celebration.
Cale scored two goals and had a three point night which isn’t unusual for him, but he seemed to be playing on a whole other level. She is beyond proud of him for making it to the biggest stage in hockey and it’s no surprise that he’s thriving because he’s just that good.
“Evelyn, do you want to come with us to the tunnel? We wait for the guys down there after the game, if you want to see Cale.” Mel asks softly as the rest of the wives and girlfriends start filtering out of the suite.
“Oh, yeah, I’d love that. You’re sure it’s okay?” Eve responds, trying not to let any sign of nerves seep through her words.
“Of course it is. You’re part of the family now! We all see how that boy looks at you. It’s only a matter of time before he makes it official.” Mel chuckles sweetly, looping her arm through Eve’s to show her the way through the arena. Eve feels a tiny smile creep onto her lips after what her new friend just said, but the giddiness running through her about seeing Cale so soon takes precedence.
In no time, the small group is waiting outside the locker room and Eve can’t seem to stand still. Anxious thoughts run through her mind. How does she greet Cale after their mutual confessions during warmups? What if he didn’t mean it? Where do they go from here?
Before she can get lost in the whirlwind of anxiety and what if’s, the door to the locker room opens and the guys start to filter out. She says hi and congratulates each of them on the win, including Nate who tells her Cale will be out in a few before bumping her shoulder playfully and giving her a knowing look.
And just like Nate said, Cale is the next player to exit the locker room. His bright blue eyes are searching the area like he’s looking for someone specific. Then he sees her.
“Eve!” Cale calls out, hurrying over with open arms to scoop her up in the tightest embrace. She can’t help the giggles that escape when her feet leave the floor for a quick moment as Cale spins her around.
“Hey bubs, you played so well! I missed seeing you out there. And I already knew it, but you’re one hell of a player.” Eve says, cupping his rosy cheeks in her hands as they maintain eye contact. The close proximity is enough to make her dizzy, but the look on Cale’s face steals her breath away.
“Thank you. It was a big surprise seeing you out there, but I’m so happy you came.”
“Me too.”
Everyone is probably watching the moment as it’s happening, but Cale doesn’t care. His girl is in his arms and there’s a tension in the air that he needs to get rid of which means he has to ask the thing he’s been wondering since he saw her during warmups with the sign that changed everything.
“Also noticed your creative spark for making signs hasn’t disappeared either.” Cale hints, a smirk tugging at the corners of his lips.
“It wasn’t my best work, but I couldn’t wait to tell you something so important.” Eve giggles, hands sliding up to lock behind Cale’s neck. “And it’s still true.”
“I know,” Cale mumbles under his breath, just loud enough for her to hear. “And I meant what I said. I love you more than anything, Evelyn. I never stopped. Not when I left for Colorado or when we decided to end things. Not even when I found out you had moved on. It’s always been you and I don’t plan on letting what we have slip away again.”
Tears begin to spring up as Eve listens to Cale speak and she can’t even begin to find words to properly express her emotions. Instead, she closes the space between them with a long awaited kiss that’s soft and gentle, but full of love. Cale pulls her impossibly closer and feels her smile against his lips. Time seems to stop and neither of them can believe how lucky they are.
“You’re it for me, Cale. I love you so much. Even if it’s a thousand miles away from where we started, I want this. I want you. There’s never been anything I’ve been more sure of in my life.” Eve says quietly, pressing her forehead against his for a brief moment before the team, who has been watching the whole moment, erupts in cheers. “Ohmygod.” She whispers, hiding her face in Cale’s chest.
“Finally!” EJ yells, shaking some of the guys in excitement.
“You might want to give Gabe a really big thank you for that stupid team bonding trip. None of this would’ve even happened if we weren’t dragged there.” Nate laughs, taking in both Cale and Eve who are glowing with nothing but pure happiness.
And years down the line, if Gabe gets the first invite to their wedding at that very same ski lodge, no one has to know.

A LITTLE LATE

TAYLOR'S AVS NIGHT!
35. "kissing their bruises and scars" (from this prompt list)
tw: drunk!cale
the walk down to the ice felt like a long one. you were walking behind his family and when they spotted him, they attacked him in a hug. you smiled, watching from the sidelines.
after congratulating him, they all took a step back so he could give you all his attention. he rammed into you, almost knocking you over.
"we did it!" he hugged you so tight.
"yeah you did." you pulled away so you could look him in the eyes. you reached up and caressed his cheek, "i'm so proud of you." he pulled you back in.
after waiting, you finally got your turn to take pictures with it and it felt like a dream come true. from a young age, you watched player after player lifted it and never thought you'd be doing the same. granted, not as a player, but it's all the same.
"holy cannoli," you muttered as it was placed in your hands. cale laughed at your choice of words. he lifted it with you as his mother took pictures.
after a night of partying, cale was drunker than drunker. a few guys had to help you get him into bed. after helping him get unready, you crawled into bed next to him.
you carefully pressed a kiss to his knuckle, where you knew a bruise had been settling in for a couple days.
"i love you." he slurred.
"i know." you laughed, "i love you, too."
"can we talk?"
"no, it's a little too late for that. we'll talk in the morning."
"but i have so much to tell you." he whined.
"i know you do, but it's late. i'm tired, you're tired, we're both a little drunk, one of us more than the other. it's time for sleep." you stated.
he pouted, "fine."
okay, i'm sorry this was so bad. i'm just trying to get this done and my brain is only halfworking.

The night we met
I said I wanted to cause chaos and I messaged @raysofcrosby about it and she didn't tell me not to so I did
Warnings: Mentions of drinking
WC: ~2.1k
This is only partially proof read because it's 2:30 in the morning and I need to go to sleep, so that's the only thing I'm sorry about. Have fun! ____________________________________________
The patio of the restaurant was loud with the laughter of your friends, the music blaring from the band your fiance found, the stories being told as you and Erik reminisced about your relationship up until that point. You couldn’t believe that you were set to be married in a matter of months, the engagement party you had waited to have until after his season was over finally happening.
The restaurant was covered with photos, from the selfie you took on the first night you met, both of you way too drunk to even remember taking it, the picture from your graduation when he surprised you by flying home from his road trip early so he could be there for you, a picture from when he met your family for the first time, holding your baby cousin like he was part of the family already. Everything you saw brought you joy, Erik especially.
You felt a hand wrap around your waist, pulling you close to him as Erik nuzzled his chin on your shoulder, placing a soft kiss against your neck. “What are you thinking about?” he whispers.
You reach up, your hand gently grazing his cheek as you turn to kiss him. “The first thing we’re going to do when we get home," you tell him, giggling against his lips as he kisses you again.
“Oh? What’s that going to be?” You feel his grip tighten around you, pulling you as close to him as he can.
“Open all of the presents and start writing the thank you cards,” you tease him, pulling a laugh from him, listening to him mumble about all the things that were 'more fun' that he wanted to do instead. “Go talk to your friends, there are some people I want to say hi to.”
He waits for another moment before he releases you, trying his best to hold on to you for as long as he can, pouting like a child the entire time. You can't help but smile as he mingles with everyone around him, looking proud as he kept gesturing over to you with every person he talked to.
You walk around, pulling different friends from different points in your life into conversation; friends you haven’t seen in a while asking to see the ring Erik got for you in person, your friends from work in awe of Erik's teammates and asking which of them were single for their own purposes, your family who couldn’t stop gushing about how happy they were for you after watching you go through partner after partner that ended in heartbreak. You finally get over to Erik’s teammates, finding Cale standing in the corner with a box in his hands, wrapped to perfection in silvery-white paper.
“Hey!” you greet him, pulling him in for a hug. “Look at everything you’ve done,” you tell him. He was the one that had introduced you to Erik all those years ago, encouraging you to date him, ensuring you that your friendship wouldn’t get complicated if you were dating one of his teammates, helping Erik plan his proposal, even agreeing to be on your side of the wedding party instead of Erik’s because of how much you loved him. Cale was your favorite person on the team besides Erik.
Cale lets out a nervous laugh, nodding as the two of you watch everyone having fun around you. “Yeah, it’s great. I’m really happy for you guys,” he says, the fake cheeriness unable to hide in his voice.
You look at him, his cheeks more red than normal, clearly something off about him. “What’s up with you?”
“What?” he looks at you, obviously panicked. You knew this boy almost as well as you knew Erik. You knew how he showed his emotions on his face, you knew what he was feeling when he was feeling it, you knew when he was hiding something from you, just like he is now. “Oh, nothing. I’m just tired. Didn’t sleep well last night.”
“Cale,” you try to press, knowing he wasn’t telling the truth.
“I brought you this,” he says, changing the subject as he thrust his gift at you.
“Oh, um,” you start, clearly taken off guard. “I’ll go put this with the others.”
“No,” he says, his hand on your arm to stop you from turning away. You both look at his hand as it lingers, Cale ripping it away before you could process anything else. “Could you open it now? I want to see your reaction.”
You don’t argue with him, bringing him over to one of the tables with your free hand so you can sit and open it. You knew he didn’t wrap it himself, the work done too nicely for it to be his, the bow tied in too pristine a manner for anyone who wasn’t somehow trained in the art of bow tying to do ti themselves.
Inside the box were hand towels in your favorite color, your initial and an E, a J in the middle for both of you. “Towels?” you ask him, a confused look on your face.
“Do you remember the first night we met? You were so drunk that-”
“You took me home with you so that you knew I was safe,” you finish his sentence. You remembered that night like it was yesterday; you had way too much to drink and had only met Cale earlier that day, but you immediately felt close to him. You felt like you had known him forever despite your forever only beeing a few hours. He took you home with him, let you take his bed and made sure that you were safe instead of trying to find your own way home when the rest of your friends were already long gone for the night.
Cale lets out a laugh. “You kept asking me for a towel, over and over again. I have no idea why.”
“I think in my mind that was the way I was going to clean up whatever mess I was.”
The two of you laugh some more over how ridiculous you could get when you were really drunk, which happened much more often than you would like to admit back when you were younger. Cale was always the first one to be by your side when he thought things were going south for you, slowly being substituted with Erik as the two of you became closer and closer as you fell in love. Cale was still always there for you.
“I figured you would need towels now that I won’t be there to get them for you,” he tells you.
You look at him as he stared at his feet, unable to make any eye contact with you. “Thank you, Cale. For everything,” you say to him, pulling him in for a hug.
He hesitates for a second, his arms staying by his sides before he finally pulls you close, holding you as if letting go for him meant losing you forever. He knew that he was going to anyway.
You pull away from him, staying there with him for a moment as you scan the venue. Your guests were in their own worlds, enjoying the party that you and Erik had planned to celebrate the impending nuptials.
“I still can’t believe I’m getting married,” you break the silence between you and Cale, wrapping and unwrapping one of the ends of the towels in between your fingers, the plush material feeling comfortable in your hands. “Especially to a guy like Erik.”
“You deserve it.”
“How did you know that he and I would work so well?”
Cale looks at you, then to Erik, then back to you before inhaling. ‘You both care about others in a way that you even the best writers couldn’t begin to put on paper. You can read people and get to know them better than they know themselves. You both make sure you put others first but you know to make sure you’re fine as well. You both have that balance of care for others and care for yourselves. He loves you.”
“I love him, too.”
Someone starts clinking the edge of their glass, signaling that they wanted to make a toast. You see Erik get up on a chair, scanning for you in the crowd. His face lights up when he sees you, waiting for everyone around you to to quiet down enough for him to talk.
“Five years ago today, I was introduced to someone who didn’t know how much alcohol should be consumed in a signel night, and always managed to take it one drink too far,” he starts, earning a laugh from everyone around you as you rolled your eyes at him, not hiding the smile that was growing on your face in the meantime. “I met the person that would become my best friend, the one I cared about the most. You were the first person I would say ‘I miss you,’ to and actually mean it. You made me forget all the hurt that was caused by other people because everytime I look at you, I can’t imagine a time in my life when you weren’t the person I wanted to spend all my time with.”
Erik continues to talk, standing above everyone by only looking at you. He breaks eye contact at one point when everyone around him can’t stop laughing, him unable to stop beaming as he talked about you. You look over at Cale, a pained look convering his face.
“Hey, will you please tell me what’s up with you?” you whisper to him. “I know you’re not just tired.”
“I can’t tell you.”
You stare at him, trying to figure out what would be so secretive to him that he couldn’t tell you when he told you everything. “What do you mean? Cale, are you ok?”
Cale swallows, still unable to look you in the eye. “I don’t want to ruin what you and Erik have.”
You could feel the panic setting in. “What did he do? Did he cheat on me? Did he lie to me about something else?” you start asking, trying to figure out what he could mean.
“No, no!” Cale says quickly. “Erik would never do that. It’s not about Erik at all.”
“Then who?”
“Me.”
You look at him, searching his face for any indicated as to what he was talking about. “What could you possibly do that would ruin what Erik and I have? Cale, you’re my best friend. You can talk to me about this.”
“That night we met.”
“What about it?”
“Do you remember everything about it? And I mean everything? Because I do.”
“I was lucky that I remembered who you were after the twelve drinks they somehow served me that night.”
“When I got you back to my place, made sure you were ok and all that, you told me you thought I was cute. That you couldn’t get over how sweet I was and how you always thought that I was the type of guy you would end up with.”
You had no idea you said any of that. You didn’t even remember that night the next morning, let alone almost five and a half years later. “Ok. So? How does that potentially ruin what Erik and I have?” you ask him jokingly. If you had mentioned potentially liking someone else one time before you even knew him, there was nothing wrong with that. What happened before him didn’t matter when you had to look forward to everything with him.
“That always made me regret introducing you and Erik.”
You can’t help but laugh, partially out of confusion. “Really?”
“I regret not asking you out instead.”
“Oh,” was all you could let out. “Why didn’t you?”
“Because when you care about someone, you have to do whatever is best for them. Even if it sucks for you.” You couldn’t think of anything else to do but stare at him. You didn’t even notice that Erik was done with his speech, down from the chair and approaching you.
“Hey, babe,” he says, pulling him close to you as he did earlier that night, the way he had been doing for five years. You had no idea that in those five years, your best friend, his teammate, someone who was like his brother, was wishing that he was the one pulling you close instead. You couldn’t help but wonder what your life would be like if Cale had actually asked you out, if he had introduced you to Erik later in your life.
“I can’t be in your wedding. I can’t come at all,” Cale lets out, leaving both you and Erik standing there, unable to say anything else.

Next part
////////////////
You hated hockey players. Okay maybe not hate, but strongly disliked them. Except for your brother Charlie, he’s okay. No one else. Actually you take that back, girl hockey players are fine but not the guys. Nope, not gonna happen. Well not gonna happen again. Yeah, bad idea. It’s the same story everyone hears about hockey boys: you knew they were bad news but you could hang with your brother’s teammates because not a chance they’d ever want to date you and vice versa. Until Gabe came along. He was different and nice and not a jerk like the other guys on the team. So you gave him a chance. It was a great few months of cheering for him at games and rituals before said games and date nights that felt like a dream. Then you found out about Sarah. Sarah was his other girlfriend. You met her at an away game that you surprised him at. Almost the whole team knew. Charlie and two of his buddies were the only ones who didn’t. So yeah hockey boys suck.
Flashforward to the present. Cale -the new guy- is next to Charlie, hand out to shake yours. Practice had just gotten over. You were a figure skater so between that and Charlie being on the team, you practically lived at the rink. It also helped that you worked there too. There was a local restaurant inside the rink that you worked at along with being a social media person for the hockey teams that practiced there. Yeah disliking hockey players and being a videographer for them at the same time didn’t make sense, but it paid well. Anyways Cale was essentially the replacement for Gabe. Cause he moved to the team that was located closer to Sarah. Which totally didn’t bother you at all, no matter what your mom may think. Supposedly Cale was a stand up guy and an amazing defenseman. You couldn’t care less, so why Charlie decided to have you both meet didn’t make sense.
“Hellooo? Earth to Y/N?” Charlie was getting impatient, “this is Cale, he’s new to the team.”
“Yeah, heard that the first time when he said it and I remember it from when you were gushing about “the new awesome defenseman that the team is getting” it is legit seven in the morning so you’ll have to forgive me if I’m a little unresponsive.” You snarked back.
“Don’t get snappy with me you nerd. Coach wanted you to meet him cause when you media things and whatnot however that stuff works. Also he introduced himself so the proper response is?”
“Yeah yeah whatever. Hi Cale I’m Y/N, I work here at the rink restaurant, I do videography, and I’m a figure skater here. Before you complain like all the others, no I don’t make holes in the ice just to annoy you guys. If I do make a hole in the ice I fill them and if I happen to miss one it’s an accident so don't go complaining to my coach so I get in trouble. It doesn’t work like that here. I’m sure you’re probably a perfectly nice guy and whatever, but I’m not here to be your friend. Sometimes I’ll hang out with you guys, but mostly I’m only around here to do my job. Speaking of my job, if I ask you to do something for content or anything, don't complain. I’m not gonna ask you to do anything crazy so you’ll be fine. Just remember I’m doing my job, not trying to make you miserable. Sorry if that’s a lot for your probably mouse sized brain to comprehend but get used to it. I’ve got to go work, but it was nice to meet you I guess.” You said the last part while putting on your blade guards before walking in the direction of the locker room.
~~~~~||
Cale POV
“Uh she’s intense.” There was no other way he could describe you. Except maybe aggressive, but that seemed a little much.
“Yeah she doesn’t really like hockey players. Don’t take it or anything she says personally, she’s had a bad experience with one guy. The guy you replaced actually.” Gabe responded.
“What do you mean by that? If you don’t mind my asking.”
“He was new and different, pretended to be someone he wasn’t. Cheated on her and the whole team except John, Tyson, and I knew. So yeah she’s not super close with the team anymore. Also as a figure skater getting harassed by hockey players her whole life she wasn’t too fond of us in the first place.”
“Ahh okay. That sucks a lot.”
“Yeah, she’s over the whole cheater thing but she definitely agrees with the douchebag stereotype for us. Anyways we gotta get to practice.
“Yeah.” Cale’s mind was on anything but practice. He wanted to be your friend. He agrees with the stereotype most of the time. There’s only a few exceptions obviously. But he thinks you and him could be great friends if you give him a chance.
~~~~~~~~~
Your POV
It had been a week since you first met Cale. There have been a few interactions since then because of introductions on the socials for him, but other than that no more conversations. You were glad he seemed to have respected your boundaries, that was much appreciated.
You had just gotten done with your shift at the restaurant and it was nine o’clock. The day started with a six o’clock practice then some editing while eating breakfast, then some practice pictures of the guys and a few TikToks of the guys, ending with a seven hour shift at the restaurant. Walking out of the break room, you grabbed your duffel and fished your car keys out of the outside pocket.
The stars were really out tonight. That was one of the perks of where the rink was located. On the edge of town and away from all the bright, crazy lights. Perfect for stargazing. Unlocking your car, you threw your bag in the seat next to you before putting the key in the ignition and turning it. And nothing. Not even a little sputter. Of fucking course. You dropped your head to the steering wheel. Charlie was in the next town over with your parents helping your grandparents pack to move. None of them could come get you. Shit shit shit. Today of all days. Of course on the day you had been running all day and just wanted to relax before having to study and edit all of the next day. You popped the hood and got out of the car. After checking the oil and transmission fluid and finding nothing wrong there you were racking your brain for what it was this time. This car was a hand me down and had issues in the past, but you had just got it back from the shop. You were pissed. The shop you went to was a new one because the one you usually went to moved. The new shop was definitely getting a call in the morning. Closing the hood and wiping your hands on your leggings you turned to get back in your car when you saw Cale.
“Hey, uh I don’t mean to bother you but it looks like you’re having some car trouble, do you have anyone you can call? I can wait with you while you do. It’s late and it would feel wrong to leave you here without knowing you can make it home.” He said.
“Yeah I don’t have anyone to call, my family is in the next town over and all my friends don’t have cars so I don’t really have anyone to call. I figured I would walk home and get it towed in the morning, I don’t live that far.” You shrugged, not like you haven’t walked home by yourself before. Not the safest thing but you gotta do what you gotta do.
“I could give you a ride. Home I mean,” you could’ve sworn you saw the redness on his face, “I haven’t lived here long but I assume it’s like everywhere else in the world, not the safest place for anyone, especially a girl to walk alone, especially at night. Also that came out super high handed so I apologize. But please let me take you home.”
You thought about it. The pros outweigh the cons here. It had been a long day and you were tired, plus he wasn’t wrong about the fact that it wasn’t safe, “Yeah that would be great thanks. Let me just grab my stuff.”
He nodded and you got your stuff before locking the car. While following him to his car you texted Charlie, he’d answer before your parents, and let him know what was going on.
“Uh this is my truck.” Cale stood there awkwardly while he waited for you to look up.
“Okay, I was just letting Charlie know what happened. Thanks again.”
“Yeah of course not an issue.” He nodded before opening your door before walking over to his side and hopping in.
The ride was in silence except for the radio playing softly in the background and you occasionally giving home directions.
“Sooo why were you at the rink so late?” You were over the silence, plus the less noise the more likely of you falling asleep which is the last thing you want.
“I was working on some drills. They do stuff a little differently from my last team so I’m just trying to get comfortable with it.”
“Fair enough. Are you liking it here? Also turn right at Walnut.”
He turned before he responded, “Yeah, I like the way stuff is run here. A lot more strict than my old team, but more efficient and with better results. The guys aren’t too bad, but I mostly hang with your brother and John and Tyson. Everyone else is kind of douchey. That was rude of me to say, please ignore that.”
“It’s the house all the way at the end on the left. And no you’re totally right. They’re assholes. What team did you come from?”
“I came from the Bulldogs a few towns over.” He responded as he pulled into the driveway.
“Ahh cool. Alright this is me. Thanks again for the ride. You’re not half bad. Don’t make me regret saying that and don’t let it get to your head. See you at Monday practice.”
“Night Y/N.” He called out his window as you walked away.
He didn’t leave until you shut the door behind you. What you said wasn’t a lie, he wasn’t like the other guys. Though you’ve been there before. He’d be a great friend though. Heading upstairs to get ready for bed you texted Charlie and asked him for Cale’s number to thank him before you passed out.
Thanks for the millionth time lol - Y/N

all I need - Cale Makar
REPOST from @cale-makar
Summary: you fall for Cale Makar, but keeping it hidden from your brother, Ryan Graves, is harder than it looks
Word Count: 4k
Warnings: language, vague/brief mentions of sex
a/n: If there are any big errors please let me know! I’m very sorry I couldn’t make this a gender neutral reader, but I didn’t describe any features, just said ‘sister’ five times and ‘she’ twice. The games in this story actually happened in early November 2019, but this fic takes place in early 2020. Tell me what you think!!
~
“What are you doing here?” Cale’s face wasn’t what you expected to see when you opened the door late one night. He held a plastic Walgreens bag in his right hand, but that wasn’t what you were focused on.
“I was heading home and decided to stop by,” he said sheepishly, his shoulders shrugging, the bag swaying.
“What if Ryan were here?”
“Well, he’s not.”
“How do you know that?” you scoffed at his careless behavior.
“‘Cause I was just down the street at his apartment,” Cale easily replied. A small ‘oh’ fell from your lips and you opened the door wider to let him in. In your eyes, you could never be too careful.
“I’m sorry, I just-” you began, but Cale shushed you before you could get another word of the almost memorized excuse you had for your worries.
You first got your job at iHeartRadio in Denver back in 2017, working as an intern. When your brother, Ryan Graves was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, he moved in just down the street. It wasn’t long before you got to know more of his teammates, but it was Cale Makar who caught your attention.
“I know, I know,” Cale sighed, setting down a Walgreens bag on the coffee table. “Do you remember when we first met?”
You were heading downstairs to greet Ryan before a weekly dinner at your apartment, but he was in a conversation with someone else in the lobby.
“I didn’t know you and my sister were neighbors,” Ryan remarked. The other man shrugged. You made your way over from the elevator, bumping your hip into Ryan’s.
“Oh! y/n this is Cale, Cale, y/n,” Cale greeted you with a warm smile, and you raised a hand in return.
“I don’t think I’ve seen you around the building yet,” you questioned, tilting your head.
“I’m new to Denver, actually.”
“Well, my door is always open,” you said. Any friend of Ryan’s was a friend of yours. “In fact, why don’t you come up for dinner?”
Ryan nodded in agreeance, but Cale hesitated.
“Are you sure?” he asked.
“Of course!” you reassured him. “I made extra anyway.”
The night went well from there, the three of you sharing the chicken and potatoes. But it was something that Ryan said towards the end of the night that stoked the swirling fire of guilt in your head.
“You better not date my sister, Calesy.”
“How could I forget?” you started. “Ryan literally told us not to do what we’re doing right now.”
“Which is exactly why I understand what you’re worried about,” he wrapped you into a tight hug, silently easing your nerves. “Now, what do you want to watch?”
~
It was a few weeks later when Cale and Tyson were scheduled for a radio interview with the sports station located in the same building as the channel you worked for. It wasn’t planned to see Cale that day, but when he brought you food during your lunch break, you were happy nonetheless.
“I wasn’t sure what you ordered,” he explained. “I hope you like it.” You could tell from the smell alone that you were about to have the best lunch break ever.
“Aw, baby, thank you,” you said graciously. “I didn’t think I’d get to see you today. Here, take my seat.” Cale eased into the plastic rolling chair as you settled yourself into his lap, back against his chest.
“How’s your day going?”
“It’s, uh, goin’ okay, I guess,” you sighed. “I’m supposed to be releasing Instagram story polls, but I don’t have most of the questions, so it’s been a rough morning trying to brainstorm. And two of the interns called off to-” he tilted your head back and kissed you softly, effectively cutting off your rant. You smiled into the kiss, just happy to have him here with you.
Your moments together were few and far between, with both of your hectic work schedules. Whenever Cale had days off, so did Ryan. It was complicated planning dates that aligned with your off days and Cale’s and making sure Ryan was busy so he wouldn’t show up unannounced.
His stomach grumbled, causing you both to laugh. You ate without any more interruptions until your coworker walked by and knocked on the cubicle wall, drawing attention to the time. Cale had to be in the lobby in 5 minutes.
Frowning, you pushed yourself up out of the chair and grabbed Cale’s hand, walking him to the elevators. He matched your slower pace and swung your clasped hands back and forth between your bodies. You pressed the down button and pressed yourself into his side as you waited. He led you into the elevator as you reached out to hit the ‘lobby’ button.
“I made dinner reservations next week,” you stated. Cale nodded in acknowledgment. Right as the doors were about to close, a hand stuck out to stop them before stepping in.
“Oh!” the man exclaimed, and you realized he was the producer for the show Cale was to appear on today. He shook Cale’s hand and introduced himself.
“It’s so good to meet you,” the man scanned your chest for your nametag. “And you, Miss Graves. Are you related to Ryan Graves?”
“Yes, he’s my brother,” you smiled. Cale coughed awkwardly next to you. The elevator cab slowed to a halt. The doors opened, revealing Tyson Jost sitting in one of the lobby’s chairs. You squeezed Cale’s hand as a goodbye while he walked through the doors to greet Tyson. The man in the lobby narrowed his eyes at you before sending a questioning glance to Cale. Before any more damage could be done, you hit the button for your floor repeatedly, avoiding his gaze.
“Was that Gravy’s sister?” Tyson questioned, now standing.
“Yeah, uh, she was in the elevator with us,” Cale replied, rubbing the back of his neck nervously.
“Huh, weird.”
“Yeah, what a coincidence.”
“Wait,” Tyson began. “Is that why you got here early?” Cale looked away in guilt as Tyson knowingly chuckled.
~
You were over at Ryan’s for your weekly, now monthly, dinner making the food with his girlfriend. Clare was a nice girl, and while you may have been skeptical of her at first, she was becoming one of your closest friends.
You had just twisted the burner to ‘Lo’ when the front door opened and revealed Ryan and-
“Cale?” you gasped.
“Nice to see you too,” Ryan said, taking off his shoes in the entryway. He waltzed into the kitchen, plopping a kiss on your forehead before greeting Clare and grabbing plates. Cale was still in the hallway, fumbling with his coat. You quietly walked over to help him hang it up, hoping Ryan would fail to notice your interaction.
“Is this okay?” he whispered. You nodded weakly and spun on your heel into the kitchen where Clare was dishing the food. Ryan always knew when you were lying, whether it was while playing cards or to your parents in your teenage years. How were you going to get through this dinner?
While seated at the table, Clare across from you, Ryan and Cale on either side, the conversation slipped into your dating life.
“When was the last time you were on a date?” Clare prodded. Realistically, it was last week when you took Cale out to his favorite restaurant in Denver, but you couldn’t tell this dinner table that.
“A few months, probably,” you admitted, picking up your fork for another bite. You hoped your chewing would disguise the lie.
“Then what was that photo you posted last week at the art museum?” she smirked. You knew she meant no harm, but her words were not appreciated. You smiled around the glass of water, hoping to douse your now flaming cheeks. Cale kept shoveling food into his mouth, trying -and failing- to disguise his knowing smile.
“Oh yeah, y/n,” Ryan probed, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table, chin in his hands. “Who took that picture?” You shook your head, leaning back in your chair. There was no way he was getting an answer out of you.
“What? Are you hiding a secret romance from us?” Clare smirked, placing her fork onto her almost empty plate. Ryan narrowed his accusatory eyes at your flushed face.
“Wouldn’t that be something, huh?” you said sarcastically, grabbing your plate and leaving the awkward atmosphere you created. Cale coughed and reached to grab the rest of the plates, following you into the kitchen.
“Let me do the dishes,” he said, placing a hand on your shoulder. He stared into your now watery eyes. Ryan hadn’t reacted well, and it filled you with even more guilt.
You sniffed. “You’re a guest, just let me finish these.”
“Technically, this is Ryan’s apartment,” Clare stated, bringing in the empty glasses. “He should be the one washing up.” You turned away from her prying eyes, wiping your face with the fabric of your sweater. Cale’s hearty laugh calmed your nerves, but you still couldn’t stand to be in the same place as him and Ryan any longer.
Tugging on your shoes, you were calling out your ‘goodbyes’ before they could question your actions. Of course, Cale wanted to walk you home, and on any other night, you’d let him, but not tonight. Regret and doubtful words filled your mind through the brisk walk home, and you didn’t realize the tears were falling until you felt a warm, familiar hand on your back.
“Woah, woah, woah, slow down, it’s okay,” The comforting arms engulfed you into a hug, the hands pressing your face into a chest. Cale’s familiar scent submerged you into the calm, away from the flame of remorse. You openly sobbed into his chest.
“We have to tell him,” you decided once you slowed and regulated your breathing. “I can’t take the guilt anymore. Lying to him is so hard.”
“Me too,” he said, releasing you from his arms but still grasping your hand. “I’ve never been good at hiding things. Especially not how I feel about you.”
You pulled him down, pressing your lips to his. Your arms wrapped around his broad shoulders, his hands grabbing at your hips. At that moment, who cares who could see you. All that mattered right then was you and Cale.
~
“So does Sandra Bullock actually tell his family they’re engaged?” Cale’s voice rumbled through your chest. His head was resting on your chest, your arms curled around his neck, both your heads craned towards the tv in his living room.
“Her name is Lucy, and shhh, you’re missing it,” you chastised. He chuckled against you, and you lightly tugged on his hair.
You turned your focus away from the movie, appreciating the way his stomach pressed into your thighs with each breath. Things were becoming tenser between the two of you. A quiet night in watching While You Were Sleeping was exactly what you needed.
“I will marry you!”
“OH, shit!” Cale startled, tearing you out of your head. “He’s already engaged!?”
“Yeah, that’s the ‘Ashley’ Peter’s family mentioned earlier,” you replied.
“That’s not good.”
“Oh, it gets better. They think she’s pregnant, too.” Cale inhaled and reached up to grab your hand, pulling it down onto the couch next to you.
The movie progressed, further revealing Lucy and Jack, Peter’s brother’s, romance. It was right when Peter woke when Ryan’s ringtone rang from the coffee table. Cale sighed and went to get up, but you clutched his shoulder, pressing him back.
“No, stay, you’re warm,” you whined. You reached over to pause the movie and grab your vibrating phone.
“Just stay quiet. Hey!” you spoke warmly into the phone. Ryan’s torn voice came from the other end.
“Hey, can I come over? I need some advice about Clare,” guilt immediately consumed you. “We got into an argument and I don’t know how to make it up to her.”
“Oh, I’m a bit busy now,” your body tensed, and Cale began rubbing up and down your thighs. “Maybe you can come over for breakfast?”
“Oh, uh, yeah, sure,” he mumbled. “I’ll see you in the morning, then.”
“Yeah, see you tomorrow,” you hung up the phone and pressed ‘play’ on the remote, relaxing back into the pillows.
“Do we need to talk about it?” Cale questioned, poking you in the side. You shook your head.
It was when he didn’t hear you laugh at the dialogue that he noticed the wet streaks on your cheeks.
“Woah, hey- stop, baby,” Cale sat up, pulling your legs over his lap.
“No, I know, I’m sorry,” you rambled. “It’s just hard to lie to him.”
Cale pulled you fully into his lap, pressing your body against his. “Shh, he’ll be okay.” He laid back, maneuvering you on top of him, effectively swapping places from earlier. You sniffed into his shirt, slowly drifting asleep.
“Ashley was already married?” burst Cale. You stirred on his lap and clutched his shirt. He went back to brushing circles beneath your sweatshirt. Suddenly tired, Cale turned off the tv and reclined into the couch, pulling a blanket over your tangled bodies.
A sharp knock pulled you from sleep hours later. You felt an aching crick in your neck from the awkward position atop Cale’s chest.
“y/n? I brought coffee!” Ryan!
You jolted up from the couch, accidentally knocking into Cale’s chin.
“Shit, shit, shit,” you muttered. Your legs caught in the blanket, and you tripped over the coffee table. “Just a second!” Cale rubbed at his eyes, running a hand through his hair.
“Go to my room and hide,” you whispered, grabbing his hands to drag him up.
You hurried to the front door, kicking Cale’s shoes into the closet and shutting the door. Ryan knocked again right as you pulled open the door. The first thing you noticed was the dark circles under his eyes.
“Good morning!” you greeted, plastering on a fake smile. “Let me, uh, get dressed, and we can go somewhere to eat.” Ryan nodded and followed you inside, opting to wait in the kitchen. You hoped you didn’t leave anything out that could reveal Cale’s presence.
Walking into your bedroom, you noticed Cale sitting at the edge of your bed, typing away on his phone.
“I’m so sorry,” you apologized. Lifting his arms, you settled onto his thighs and held his gaze. “You know I hate hiding you, but we remember what Ryan said.”
“Would he really be angry?” Cale said, keeping his volume low.
“Yes, ugh- it’s hard to describe, he just would be upset,” You pressed a small kiss to his nose. You slid off him and went to the closet, pulling on a different pair of pants and swapping out your hoodie. “I’ll call you later.” You ran your hands through your hair, aiming to tame it as you pulled on your shoes.
“You ready to go?” Ryan asked.
“Yep!”
Cale heard the front door closed and scrunched up his face in remorse.
~
Your phone buzzed on the table in front of you, showing a text from none other than Cale.
“You talk to Makar?” Ryan questioned.
“Uh, yeah,” you stuttered. “We talk sometimes, I guess.” Ryan reached and grabbed your phone, reading the text aloud.
“‘Hope you have a good day’ it says,” Ryan’s face contorted in confusion.
“Huh, weird.”
“Yeah, that is pretty weird,” he scoffed. You leaned forward and snatched the phone out of his hands.
“What, am I not allowed to be friends with your teammates?” you snapped.
“No, that’s not what I meant at all-” fortunately, the waitress walked up and asked for your drink orders. You rolled your eyes and looked up towards the ceiling. Why did this have to be so difficult?
~
You were at John and Steve, your coworkers’, house to watch tonight’s home game against Nashville, your Makar jersey hanging from your frame. Usually, you’d be cheering for your boys from the stands, but a work obligation caused you to stay late and you would miss the first period with the commute. The plan was to go out with your coworkers, but the three of you were far too tired for a bar, settling for their house. The jersey was stuffed into your bag last minute as this was one of the few times you got to wear it. Steve sent you a questioning glance when you pulled it over your work polo before you left the office, but John failed to notice.
“I’ll order a pizza,” John declared in the car. You hummed in agreeance from the backseat, your eyes closed and head resting against the headrest. A famous singer was scheduled for an interview the next day but had to reschedule for a day earlier, causing panic in the office. You were exhausted.
John turned the tv on in the middle of the second anthem, with only minutes to spare. You just settled in with a plate of pizza when Cale scored with an assist from Ryan less than a minute in. You cheered around the bite of pizza, standing up and jumping around with Steve.
You checked your phone after sending a quick text to Cale and noticed that John tagged you in a story. It was a still image of you and the other man dancing around with the caption “look at these idiots.” You smiled and quickly added it to your story, focusing back on the game.
“Bet you’re glad you wore that jersey tonight,” John remarked from the other end of the couch, drawing a laugh from you. Nashville scored after that, but Mackinnon put Colorado back in the lead and that brought an end to the first period.
You went to get another couple slices of pizza during the break and noticed you had a text from Ryan. ‘r u watching?’ it read. You responded with a short ‘yes’ and went into the bathroom to change out of your work attire now that you had time to spare.
The second period began with two goals from the Predators, bringing them ahead by 1. The lead was soon squashed by Donskoi, tying the game 3-3. Not 20 seconds later, your brother shot from the blue line and brought the team to a 4-3 lead.
“FUCK YEAH!” you shouted, doing the practiced victory dance with Steve. He grabbed your hands and you jumped three times before twirling each other beneath raised arms. John was taking a video this time and caught your gleeful expression, posting it to Instagram again. In your excitement, you didn’t notice how it showed off your #8 jersey when you reposted it.
The Avs ended up winning 9-4 with 6 consecutive goals in the second and a final one by Donskoi in the third. It was later, before you went to bed, when Ryan sent you a link to a tweet followed only by a series of question marks. Your Instagram account was public, so someone must’ve saved the video of your celly and uploaded it to Twitter for the rest of the world to see. The caption was “Graves’ sister wearing a Makar jersey?”
How were you supposed to explain this one?
‘forgot my jersey at home and borrowed john’s lol’ You hoped he believed you.
~
The energy in the Pepsi Center a couple nights later was unparalleled. Obviously, you had swapped your Makar jersey for one that showed your own last name across the back. You eventually took the story down, but the damage was already done. It was a weekend, so you were able to attend this game. You sat in the family box with everyone else’s family waiting for the game against Columbus to begin.
It was off to a rough start with Ryan getting a holding penalty and the Blue Jackets scoring. You sat anxiously, knee bouncing, hoping anyone would tie the game. Sam Girard came in clutch with a power-play goal, but Columbus scored again with less than a minute left in the first, bringing them to a 2-1 lead.
You went to get drinks with Clare during the break, hoping it would tear your mind away from the stress of the game.
“So what was the deal with the jersey on Thursday?” Clare asked while you were waiting in line.
“I forgot mine at home so I had to borrow my coworker’s,” you said, the rehearsed excuse falling easily from your lips. She sent you a look that clearly meant she didn’t actually believe you. She had nothing to show against your claim otherwise, and you were saved from explaining further when it was your turn to order.
Halfway into the second period, Cale scored off a pass from Ryan, and again not five minutes later. You cheered and danced with Clare this time. You were happy to be here supporting in-person instead of sitting at home in front of a tv screen.
The boys snagged a 4-2 win, and you were anxious to get downstairs to greet them. Cale made it out of the dressing room first, so the two of you could share your moment before everyone else was crowding the hallway.
He wrapped his strong arms around your waist, hugging you tightly as you murmured praises into his ear. You rocked back and forth, taking your time in appreciating Cale.
“Can I kiss you?” he whispered. You leaned back, still in his arms, and shook your head no. There were too many people around. But you reached up and pecked his rosy cheek instead. A low whistle partnered with a hearty laugh broke the small bubble around the two of you. Josty and Compher walked out of the dressing room and saw you and Cale in a tight embrace.
“Young Gravy, what are you doing here?” Tyson yelled. You laughed at the nickname.
“Great game,” you said, ignoring the question and creating distance from Cale.
“Yeah, it was!” J.T. shouted. “Our boy, Calesy, got two goals!” He wrapped an arm around Cale’s shoulder jostling him around a bit. More cheers and hollers followed his comment as more of their teammates came through the double doors, including Ryan.
He came over and hugged you tightly, lifting you into the air a few inches as he cheered into your ear. The taller man set you down and patted the name on your back, moving on to greet Clare.
“You good?” Cale mouthed. You nodded, biting your bottom lip anxiously. You’d become too careless, Ryan had to be suspecting something.
~
“I’m exhausted,” you groaned into the phone. The boys were on a long road trip, and you missed both of them so much. It was out of your routine to not hang out with either of them at least once a week, and it stressed you out. You were used to waking up to Cale’s sleepy face in bed or Ryan passed out on your couch. “Miss you so much.”
“I know, y/n,” he mumbled. “I’ll-uh- we’ll be back next week.” Cale was sitting in his hotel room in Vancouver, trying not to fall asleep when the door opened.
“You awake in here?” Ryan’s voice came from the doorway.
“Look, I gotta go,” Cale hushed into his phone. “Talk to you later.” He hung up the phone, abruptly ending your conversation.
“Sorry, man, didn’t know you were on the phone.”
“It’s all good, I was gonna go to bed soon anyway.”
“Who are you even talking to this late? Got a girlfriend you aren’t telling us about?” Cale tried to deny it, but his flushed cheeks sold him out. “Nice, man! When can I meet her?”
“Not sure,” he stuttered. “She’s, uh, shy.” Ryan nodded and dropped the topic, opting to turn off the lights and pass out.
The next morning, Cale was eating cereal at breakfast when he felt a sharp poke in the neck.
“Is that a hickey?” Burky bellowed. A chorus of shouts and praises erupted, and a few guys patted him on the shoulder.
“Cale juice gets some?”
“Better than you!”
“Yeah, Calesy!”
But it was a shout from Tyson that silenced everyone.
“Hey, Gravy! How’s your sister?”

Mistletoe Magic
Author: Mila Player/Team: Cale Makar - Colorado Avalanche Prompt: #10 - Mistletoe Requested: Yes No || Word Count: 1107 || Rating: Pg
TW: None! A/N: i'm back!! i've been obsessing over cale lately so have this :) let's just pretend this one takes place in pre (or post) covid times lmao also requests are open, so send me asks for imagines/ships/etc.!
"I'm so sorry I was late! There was an accident on the highway, and I-" you said through ragged breaths. "Hey, calm down! It's okay. You didn't miss anything. Just take a moment to breathe, though. I don't want you passing out on me," your best friend Cale grabbed your shoulders and gently squeezed them to try and stabilize you. Little did he know that it only made you feel weaker. You smiled painfully and tried to catch your breath while he took your coat. The Avs were having a Christmas auction where bidders could buy some of the guys' old stuff - sticks, pucks, jerseys, the works. All of the proceeds were going to the children's hospital. While the guys, of course, had to be there, they were also encouraged to bring their significant others or friends. According to Cale, they were told to "invite as many people as possible". The more people attending, the more money to donate to the charity. Plus, nothing helps publicity more than a nice wholesome family vibe. While you weren't family or Cale's significant other, you were his best friend. And to be honest, there was no one he would have rather invited that night. The dress code was formal, so you were wearing a gorgeous dark green outfit that complimented your skin and hair colors perfectly. Per your request, you had coordinated outfits beforehand with Cale, so he looked absolutely dashing in a dark black suit with a green tie to match the same deep green as your outfit. Once you'd shrugged your coat off, Cale held out his elbow and you gently took it. "What a gentleman you are, Cale," you said with a grin. "I can be when I try," he responded, and you giggled. He led you to a table where you had some snacks and drinks. Champagne, wine, and beer were all available. Cale had a bottle of beer and you decided on a glass of champagne. Neither of you would know the difference between a high quality brand of alcohol or a low quality one, but it didn't make much difference. Sitting there with Cale, drinking and looking fabulous, you felt so very happy. He didn't know, but you had been crushing on him hard for three or so years. You wanted to say something many times, but you just couldn't bring yourself to actually do it. Instead, you just laughed at his jokes and spent as much time with him as possible - without being weird. Now that he was playing for the Avs, he was gone much more frequently than he used to be and finding quality time to spend together was hard, especially in the winter. You were more than overjoyed when Cale had asked you to be his date to the Avs charity auction. After snacking and sitting through the auction, Cale left you alone to take some pictures and sign some merch for the fans who attended. You talked with some of the other players' partners and then just rested at the table until Cale returned. When he got back, some games and a little bit of dancing had broken out. He offered you his hand, and you took it. "Want to play Connect 4?" he asked, and you laughed. "Not particularly. Do you want to play cornhole?" "Not particularly," now it was his turn to laugh. You had been too busy to notice the group of Cale's friends standing in front of you, but when they started hooting and hollering you turned your head. It was Nathan, Gabe, and Mikko. You awkwardly waved as Cale introduced you and said hello. “So, are you gonna follow the rules or give us all bad luck?” Gabe asked with a chuckle. “What are you talking about?” Cale asked with a laugh, and Gabe pointed above you. You followed his finger to see a tiny sprig of mistletoe hanging above your heads. It was taped to the ceiling with white hockey tape, which made you giggle. You glanced down at Cale to realize he was also taking in the meaning of everything. You were standing under the mistletoe. Both of you. And now both of you were flushing furiously. Cale’s pink cheeks were now a deep shade of burgundy, and you imagined yours weren’t far away on the color spectrum. You folded your arms across your chest and avoided eye contact while the boys roasted Cale. Eventually, you gained
enough courage to lift your eyes. You met his own, and he sheepishly grinned. “Well…if it’s bad luck…” he said and stepped closer to you. You couldn’t move, your feet firmly planted on the ground. When his hand cupped your cheek and the other slid around your waist, you felt your body go even stiffer, if that was possible. He gently leaned down and pressed his soft lips against yours. They were slightly cold, but thanks to your burning embarrassment it was a welcome temperature change. You pressed back against him and let your hands rest on his chest. As his lips began to pull away and head turn down, you felt yourself moving further into him. When he finally broke away, you noticed his moment of hesitation before the air cleared between you. You heard the boys even though your eyes were closed. They let out a chorus of “oohs” and “awwwws”. When you finally let yourself look, you saw Cale standing across from you with the biggest smile on his face. You had both felt that the kiss was special, and you had the urge to tell him. You had to tell him now, before this moment was ruined or expired. You reached out and grabbed his hand, but as you opened your mouth he spoke first. “I like you,” he said, and you started. Before you had a chance to respond, he continued. “I really like you, and I have for a while. I’ve wanted to kiss you for so long. And I want to kiss you again and again and again. If you’ll let me.” You hesitantly glanced toward the hoard of grown men watching your drama like it was a reality tv show or an episode of The Bachelor. “Of course I’ll let you, dummy. I would want nothing more than for you to kiss me for the rest of my life!” you finally responded and threw yourself into his arms. He squeezed you tight, gleeful laughs spilling out of your lungs. As he twirled you around, you only laughed harder when you saw the puppy dog expressions plastered all over the boys’ faces. Mistletoe really is magic.

DECEMBER 24, 2020 - 9:24 AM
“Thank you babe.” Cale says as you hand him a coffee you had just made him. “You’re welcome!” You say as Cale smiles adoringly at you. “So.. are you ready to go to my parents house?” You ask, sitting down next to Cale at the kitchen island. “Yeah. This is like the 4th Christmas I’ve been to at your parents house, but I’m glad I get to go with my favorite person in the world.” “What about your mom?” You ask giggling, looking up at him. “Whatever.” He says, rolling his eyes playfully at you while getting up from the island. “Start getting ready babe! You know how strict my mom is about being late!” You say jokingly, yelling after Cale, still laughing. “Yes ma’am.” Cale says, turning around and giving you a wink before turning around and continuing walking to the kitchen to the shared bedroom.
11:30 THAT SAME DAY
Cale steps into the house with you right behind him as your whole family starts greeting you two. “Cale! Y/N! How are you?” Your mom says, walking out of the kitchen. “Hey mom!” You say stepping in front of Cale to hug your mom. “Hi Mrs. Y/M/N!” Cale said as he hugs her after you go to your dad and start hugging him. “Hey Cale.” Your dad says as Cale and your dad do that little handshake guys have. You then start talking to the rest of your family, not noticing that Cale, your mom, and your dad had stepped away into a more private room.
“What's up Cale?” your mom asks with her hands resting on her hips, standing next to your dad and in front of Cale as Cale shuts the door. Cale takes a deep breath. “I have a question to ask both of you.” Cale says, cheeks heating up. You parents look at each other before looking back at Cale. “Y/N is the most beautiful, intelligent, and kindest person I’ve even met. We’ve been together for almost 5 years and I can’t imagine spending my life with anyone else but her. I’ve known I want to marry her for a while now, so I am here to ask you guys for your blessings. ” Cale says nervously, waiting for your parents response. It takes a moment for your parents to say something. “Y-yes!” Your mom says, tearing up while hugging Cale. “Please take care of her.” Your dad says. “Yes sir.” Cale says while shaking his hand. You three went back into the room and went on with the day.

APRIL 4, 2021
“You ready, gorgeous?” Cale asks while standing in the doorway of the bathroom, looking at you though the mirror while you put the last finishing touches on your hair. “Mhm!” You say, walking out of the bathroom. You were wearing a short flowy red dress with a pair of black sandals. A few minutes later, you were walking out of the apartment you and Cale shared. You had no idea where you and Cale were going. All you knew was that Cale looked really handsome in a suit he usual only wears to games and he wanted to show you something in this really pretty park he had found. You had no idea how he found it or why he wanted to go while it was dark outside, but here you two were, on the way to the park but little did you know, Cale had big plans. He had hired the best photographer he could find and had lights set up at the park in the gazebo.
A few minutes later you two were walking hand in hand down a little dirt path. Cale started swinging your hands back and forth when you spotted the pretty gazebo wrapped in fairy lights. You gasped. “Babe! That is so pretty!” Cale chuckled as the photographer who was hidden behind some bushes got a picture of your reaction to the pretty gazebo. You and Cale had finally reached the gazebo and stepped inside. You started looking at your surroundings, facing in the direction away from Cale as he got down on one knee and pulled the ring out of his back pocket. The photographer got a few pictures of that too. You turned back to face Cale when you found Cale on one knee. You covered your mouth with one hand as you started to cry happy tears. The photographer came out of the bushes and started taking pictures. A lot of pictures. “Y/N Y/L/N, will you make me the happiest hockey player in the world and marry me?” Cale said smiling up at you. You nodded your head rapidly while Cale stood up and slid the diamond ring on your finger and pulled you into a kiss. A few moments later, you had stopped crying the happy tears but couldn’t stop staring at your ring. “I still can’t believe we’re engaged!” You said, jumping up and down like a little kid while Cale laughed. “Me neither baby, me neither.” Cale said wrapping his arms around your waist while you burring your face into his chest. “I love you Cale.” “I love you too Y/N. More then you’ll ever know.”

into you
request: 51 w Makar? I love that smiley guy sm !
prompt: “Smile.” - “No.” - “You’re smiling, though!” / number 51 off of this list with Cale Makar.
summary: Cale’s teammates like you, but that doesn’t mean they’re not going to chirp him for how into you he is.
warnings: none
word count: 1.8k
“I don’t know how you managed to trick me into this.” You huffed as you exited your apartment, your ever-smiley best friend waiting patiently for you to lock your door.
“Because you love me?” He offered, just enough teasing in his voice to have you grinning despite the sleepiness that still had its grips on you. Cale, the redheaded boy who occupied most of your thoughts, led the way to the elevator, chuckling softly to himself at your response, which was little more than an annoyed grumble.
See, you couldn't let him know just how accurate his teasing response was. You had been head over heels for the sweet boy the moment you saw him offer to pay for an old lady's coffee at the small cafe you worked for. He was cute, sweet, and the way he stumbled over his words as he ordered endeared him to you almost instantly. After him coming into the cafe a few more times, he was brave enough to ask when your shift ended so you could get a cup of coffee with him. You wasted no time in agreeing to go with him, hoping that it would be an impromptu first date, but he gave no sign that he was interested in being anything other than friends. So, you remained in his life, but as the supportive best friend.
Which was how you found yourself in your current position, waking up early on your day off just to go shopping for a charity event that you weren't even sure you wanted to go to.
The charity part wasn’t the problem, the whole getting up early to shop for a completely new outfit was why you were so annoyed. And since Cale insisted that he paid for you, no matter how vehemently you told him no, he had to come shopping with you.
Cale, bless his heart, was doing his best to find something you liked. You had given him a gist of what you were looking for, and he finding pieces that actually fit your style. Still, he not everything his picked were winners.
“What about this?” Cale asked, brows furrowed as he studied the fabric. You knew he was serious, but the clothing his picked out was so absolutely ridiculous, you couldn't help but giggle.
“Cale, it’s neon yellow.” You explained when he looked to you to explain what was wrong with his choice. The redhead’s cheeks turned even more rosy, and you turned back to the rack to try and distract yourself from intrusive thoughts telling you red was now your favorite color.
He was going to be the death of you.
A few days later found you all dressed up and following Cale into a ballroom packed with people. Your hand was clasped tightly around his wrist as he used his hockey frame to maneuver you through the crowd. A few times you were stopped by someone usually thirty years Cale’s senior to talk to him about hockey statistics and all things related.
You could tell he was just humoring everyone while looking for an escape. His usual smile replaced by a tight-lipped one that told you he wanted to be anywhere but where he was, though he would never admit it.
Just because he had to entertain the old men didn’t mean you had to, and when you spotted three blondes standing off to the side, somehow avoiding attention, you knew it was your one chance to get away. Waiting until it was Cale’s turn to talk, you squeezed his forearm and whispered that you were going to talk to Mel before separating. He shot you a pained look that only you spotted, and you grinned mischievously at him. You both knew what you were doing, but it didn't make you feel bad about leaving the redhead with the men that were asking a thousand and one questions.
As soon as she spotted you, Mel Landeskog was calling your name. Her husband Gabe was standing next to her, arm wrapped securely around her waist. Beside them, Erik Johnson stood, having decided this was an occasion to wear his fake teeth. Shortly after your friendship with Cale developed outside of the cafe you worked at, he introduced you to his team. They were fun to hang out with and you grew close to Mel like she was your older sister, with Gabe and EJ being the annoying brothers.
“You look fantastic.” Mel complimented, pulling you into a hug as soon as you were within arms reach. You returned the sentiment, Gabe and EJ both taking turns to embrace you annoyingly tight after. The smug look on both of their faces almost made you want to turn back and rejoin Cale in the stifling conversation about Colorado’s third period goal statistics and how to improve them.
“You two make me nervous.” You chuckled, looking between the boys before raising a brow at Mel for an explanation. You knew you were screwed when you saw she was also grinning at you with a mischievous look on your face.
“So you’re the rookie’s date, huh?” EJ started, wiggling his brows dramatically and in a way that made you cringe.
“We're just friends, Johnson.” You huffed. Your relationship status with their defenseman was always a topic of interest between the two blondes, and it got even worse when the rest of the team jumped in on the joke—Burky could be relentless in his teasing when he wanted to be.
“Mhm.” He hummed, looking thoroughly unconvinced, much to your chagrin. Instead of taking the bait like you knew he wanted you to do, you rolled your eyes and turned to Mel, engaging her in conversation about anything other than hockey and boys, more specifically, hockey boys. To give Gabe and EJ credit, they knew when to draw the line and take a step back. Well, at least you thought they did when they let you and Mel be for all of two minutes before their teasing started up again. Only this time, it wasn't directed at you, though you still were at the center of attention.
“How’d you get such a good-looking date, Cale?” Gabe started, unable to resist the jab and a chance to cause his teammates cheeks to darken. Cale appeared at your side, cheeks just as rosy as you figured they would be but he was taking the chirps in good humor. You, on the other hand, were getting a little annoyed. With the boys constantly making jokes it would only be a matter of time before Cale put together the fact you had a massive crush on him. You were dead set on the idea that of he found out about your feelings, he would be weirded out and you would lose one of your closest friends.
“I asked nicely.” Cale teased, earning a barking laugh from his teammates. You rolled your eyes at his adorable comment, having expected nothing less from him.
“I’m not that good-looking.” You absentmindedly commented, causing Cale’s head to whip around to face you. Your own cheeks started to get rosy, and you could only meet his confused look with one of your own.
“You look amazing, I’m lucky that you came with me.” Even more so, your face flushed at his compliment to the point where you were certain that you matched the color of his hair.
“Oh, my god. I’m just going to tell them.” EJ sounded so exasperated, but there was still traces of his smug grin. You and Cale both looked to him for answers, but he was just looking to Gabe and Mel. Gabe seemed to be on the side of EJ spilling whatever it was but Mel was shooting him a stern look. There was some silent discussion, Mel nudging her husband’s shoulder in reprimand for a fault you weren't sure he had made.
“Remember what we were talking about the other day after practice?” Gabe turned his focus to Cale, who for a moment looked at his captain dumbly. You watched with confusion as Cale registered what Gabe had been talking about, before nodding slightly, his lips set in a firm line. Gabe gestured with his thumb over his shoulder towards the balcony, and Cale nodded once more.
You tried not to jump out of your own skin as Cale threaded his fingers through yours and tugged you in the direction his captain had just suggested. You shot Mel a look over your shoulder, but the blonde only gave you two thumbs up, and encouraging smile on her face.
The Denver night was cold, but it felt nice against your flushed skin. Once the balcony door was shut, Cale dropped your hand and moved to stand at the railing, his grip tight on the metal. Your heart was pounding in your chest as you moved closer to him, placing a shaky hand on his bicep to try and silently coax an answer of what was going on out of him.
“The guys chirp me a lot.” He leads, and you stay quiet, knowing that was not what he needed you to follow him outside for. “Mostly because I’m the rookie, but also because of you.”
“Me?” The question fell past your lips in little more than a whisper. Cale nodded, turning to face you. You weren’t sure if he meant that his teammates didn't like you, but you felt like that wasn't the reason. At least, you hoped.
“I’m like, so into you, and they give me so much shit for it.” He confessed, and you felt the corner of your lips turn upwards.
“I mean, if you’re being sappy then I don't blame them.” You couldn’t help but tease, and you could tell he knew you felt the same when you noticed you beaming up at him. He groaned at your comment, dropping his head back at your comment as he cheeks turned red. “Smile.”
“No.” He shot back, but despite his comment you could tell he was grinning widely.
“You’re smiling, though!” He chuckled at you comment, tilting his head forward to look at you once more. His smile was soft, gaze flicking from your eyes down to your lips and back up. You leaned forward a bit and that was all the invitation Cale needed to duck down to your level press a gentle kiss to your lips.
The kiss was slow and sweet, just as you expected it to be with Cale. Ever the gentleman, his hands found home on your waist but never explored any further. When you pulled away for air he used his grip on you to anchor you to your spot right in front of him. You weren't sure who was grinning brighter, but you were certain an argument could be made on both of your behalves. Cale was the first to break the silence, you were still too shocked to do speak.
“Yeah, I am smiling.”

Cale Makar - New brother
Cale makar angst
Author’s Note: I made Cale, a little older than he is, also I’m not really sure who he is so I apologize if this sucks.
Kinsley, might not have been planned but you would be lying if you said he wasn’t yours and Cale’s whole world.
He looked just like his father, same light blue eyes, same sandy color hair and the infamous rosy cheeks. He was always smiling and never failed to make yo or Cale laugh. However, that all changed when you told Kinsley he was going to be a big brother.
“No thank you momma.” He said in his three year old voice.
“Well you don’t get to pick buddy. Momma, is already carrying your baby brother or sister.” Cale smiled as he kept coloring.
Kinsley, stop mid color, looking up at you two. He thought for a moment before laughing. “Nooo.”
You looked at Cale with a worry. You knew what it was like to be told you were having a new sibling, but you still worried that it might not all go well. You and Cale were still young, but you two have been trying for another baby for a while. The thought that Kinsley wasn’t happy, killed you.
You left your two boys in the dining room and walked into the bathroom. You were already an emotional wreck, but this was just icing on the cake. You knew that he didn’t mean it. After all he was only three. There was a soft knock on the door, before Cale popped in.
“Hey my peach.” He said pulling you in for a hug.
You couldn’t help the tears that spilled out and on to your husbands shirt. You felt a soft kiss to the top of your head every once in a while. All you could do was hold onto Cale and cry.
“He’ll be fine once this little bean comes out. He just doesn’t understand yet.”
9 months later
“He’s so beautiful Cale.” You smiled down at your new bundle of joy.
“He looks just like his momma.”
“NO! All our kids look like you.” You joked. “Not that I’m complaining.”
“Ohh where is my new grandson!” You mom gushed as she walked in the room with Kinsley.
Cale, help up his new son. “Say hi to your nana, Cellin Lewis Makar.”
“Oh will you look at those chubby cheeks.” You mom said as she took Cellin in her arms. “Kinsley, look at your baby brother.”
“No, thank you.” He said sitting on the bed next to you.
You looked over at Cale, who already was looking at you. You began to worry again. Cale and your mom saw your face.
“Having a little brother is super fun though Kins. You get to watch them grow, and teach them how to do all sorts of stuff.” You mom tried.
Kinsley, looked un-amused still. That’s when Cale took his hand and took him outside. All you knew is when they came back in the room Kinsley was all happy about having a new brother. Later on when your mom took Kinsley home you finally asked your husband what happened.
“I just told him that having a sibling was cool.” He said as he fiddled with the tv.
“Cale..”
“And I might have told him that he gets a new room.” He blushed. You smiled as you placed a palm on his cheek.
“Thank you.”
“For?”
“For being a wonderful dad and a wonderful husbands. I couldn’t have do this all without you.”
“I mean you could have but it might not have been as fun.” He laughed.
“CALE!”

Cale Makar #1
Requested by Anon: A cute cale makkar one please!!!
*This is situated sometime in the future! Something cute headed your way! Enjoy. :)*
Word count: 793
Cale poked his head out of the bedroom and you swallowed a snort, trying so hard to look serious. You bit your bottom lip from laughing, and you bit it quite hard, but a little giggle slipped out. Sorry, you just can’t help it.
Your boyfriend frowned, his bottom lip jutting out, “no?”
You shook your head, “no,” you pushed him back into the room, “this is your first NHL game, babe,” you giggled, “you’re not playing dress up with your dad’s twenty-year-old suits.”
He swiftly turned to face you, his cheeks turning pink, “I’ll have you know, this is a brand new suit.”
“Doesn’t look like it to me,” you tugged on the white dress shirt he had on, “it’s ill-fitted and you look like you’re the host of some high-end restaurant who’s had one too many drinks before they open.”
He scoffed, his eyes widening, “I love how detailed you are with your imaginings.”
You got on your tippy toes and kissed his cheek, your hand resting on his chest for balance, “I hope I can say the same thing about your suit.”
He turned around fully now, his head hanging low, “is it really that bad?”
Wrapping your arm around him, you chided, “not if you have the body of Brent Burns,” you said, motioning to the jacket which is two sizes too big, “it’s your first NHL game, you’ve waited your whole life for this,” you tugged on his tie, “I think I speak for your mom when I say I’m not gonna let you go there looking like this.”
He bit his bottom lip, “lucky for us, the game’s not until tomorrow.”
You walked over to his closet and picked out a slim looking jacket and matching pants, “that was a good idea, eh?” you handed him the suit jacket you picked out, “making you put on your game day suit?”
He shrugged, “no one’s really going to give a crap about what I wear.”
You jumped on his bed and stretched, “definitely the people on Tumblr,” you pointed out, “thay have thos GIFs of players walking to the locker rooms, they will immortalize your embarrassment.”
He took off the jacket he was wearing before jumping in beside you, “I don’t want that.”
“If you trust my fashion choices,” you rested your chin on the back of your hand, “then it won’t happen.”
He gave you a big smile, “I trust you.”
“You should,” you laughed, tangling your legs with his.
A few beats passed, Cale grabbed your free hand and squeezed, your legs still tangled with his, he turned his head sideways until your eyes met his.
He gave you a small smile, “don’t tell anyone this but I’m nervous.”
Kissing the top of his nose, you whispered, “you’ll be fine.”
“What if I score a goal on my own net?” he asked, terrified at the thought.
“I’m pretty sure Semyon Varlamov will make sure it won’t happen.”
“Or worse,” he choked, “what if I go into the rink with my skate guards on?”
You shifted so you were facing him, “Jonathan Drouin and a number of players have already done that, that’s nothing new. And besides, you have Gabe Landeskog to make sure it won’t happen,” you kissed his temple, “stop overthinking.”
He ran a hand through his hair, “I just feel like there’s a war in my belly and I’m always on the verge of puking.”
You squeezed his hand, “you’re Cale Makar,” you reminded him, “you were born for this,” you grinned, “no need to be nervous.”
“I was born for hockey?” he asked, quirking an eyebrow, “but I always thought I was born for you?”
You covered his face with a pillow, “you suck,” you snorted, “but you’re cheesy and I like it.”
He moved the pillow until both his eyes were peeking out. When he talked, his voice was still a little muffled, “you really think I’m going to be fine?”
“As long as you wear a better outfit,” you nodded, “then yes, you’ll be okay.”
“What if I don’t score a goal?”
“Not everyone is Auston Matthews, Cale, you’re a defenseman,” you rolled your eyes, “everyone you’re allowed to not score on your first game,” you put your cheek against his chest, “but when you finally do, I’ll be there to cheer for you,” you told him, “front and center.”
You got up and pulled him with you, “though, I’ll still be there even if it takes you three seasons before you finally score a goal.”
“Let’s wish that won’t happen,” he grumbled.
“It won’t,” you told him sincerely, “no need to be a nervous Nancy,” then you joked, “but if it does…”
He poked your arm, “it won’t,” he laughed.

12. from the dialogue prompt list with cale makar? i love your writing!!!
JACKET
TAYLOR'S AVS NIGHT!
12. "it looks good on you." (from this prompt list)
you and cale started right before the season started, which wasn't the best time due to the fact that he was gone for a good period time of the year.
so it was your first season as a wag. you had gone to a game before but with friends and not as a girlfriend. being part of the wag squad, meant you also got special merch.
the first piece of clothing you got was the illusive jacket.
it was a denim jacket with different little pieces of art all around it, but what really grabbed your attention was the bedazzled '8' and 'makar' plastered on the back.
with the upcoming game, all the girls had planned to wear the new jackets. you decided not to tell cale to surprise him. and what a surprise it was.
after the game, you were talking with a few other girls as you all waited for the guys to come out. all the guys piled out and greeted their partners before heading for the exit.
cale finally came out and when he saw the jacket, he froze. his brain stopped working and his legs stopped moving. when his brain finally started working, he quickly made his way over to you.
you smiled, "you okay? you looked like a toy robot whose batteries just died." you joked.
"yeah, i'm fine." he ran his hands over every detail of the jacket, "is this new?"
"yeah, got it a few weeks ago and we all decided to wear them today." you smiled nervously, "do you like it?"
"like it? i love it. it looks good on you." he smiled, his cheeks turning red. the smile on your face grew and you leaned up, pressing a kiss to his cheek.

Fire Escape
I'm officially incapable of being nice to this boy in a fic and I'm not sorry.
Word Count: 1.5k, it's short oops
Warnings: I'm mean
__________
Pizza.
The one thing on her mind was getting some pizza, the late-night pizza place’s neon ‘open’ sign borderline burning Emeline’s retinas and worsening her already throbbing headache that was bound to turn into a hangover before she even woke up the next morning.
“Cale,” she yells over the music, grabbing his hand and pointing out the windows of the bar across the street. “We need pizza.” Cale nods, not saying a word as he takes her hand and drags her out of the bar, forgetting their friends in the meantime as they drank the night away without a care in the world.
He steadied her, clearly more sober than she was as they stumbled across the street to get the food she wanted, Cale paying for it despite Emeline’s protests, handing it to her while wrapping his arm around her waist as they walked back to her apartment. He was sure she could feel his heart beating, swearing that ti was beating so loud that he could barely hear the words that she was mumbling.
“I have never wanted anything more in my life,” she says, walking up the stairs to her door, handing the box to Cale to get her keys out. She opens the door, music blasting from inside. She shuts the door, turning faster than Cale can realize, both of them freezing as he has her pinned against the wood, his breath syncing with hers for a second despite his heart beating out of control before clearing his throat and stepping back.
“What’s wrong?” he asks her, praying that the red in his cheeks had been there before the moment he was close to her.
“Frankie has girl in red playing,” Emeline tells him, referencing her roommate.
“And?”
“That means she has a girl over.”
“And?” he repeats.
“The last time I walked into the apartment when she was playing girl in red that loud, she was with a girl on the couch but their clothes were somehow in the kitchen sink.”
“How does that happen?”
“What was I supposed to do, say, ‘Excuse me?’ and interrogate them about their clothes?” she says, surprisingly quick, catching Cale off guard
“So how do we get in?”
Emeline tries to think for a second, her head cloudy as she forces herself to remember what she did the last time she came home to this scenario. She remembers scratching her leg on something and telling Frankie she was lucky she didn’t need stitches, but she couldn’t, for the life of her, remember what had happened that lead her to that. It finally dawns on her, a sly smile on her face as she grabs Cale’s hand.
“Emmie,” Cale lets out, causing her to pause for a second. No one called her that except her mom, catching her off guard, despite Cale not noticing her reaction. She hated when people called her Emmie, but not when it was Cale saying it. “Where are we going?”
“Do you trust me?”
He smiles at her, his heart skipping a beat as she grabs his hand and leads him back outside and around the side of her building, listening to her yell at him about the pizza and keeping it safe. “The fire escape?”
She laughs as she jumps up, missing the first few times before finally grabbing the ladder and pulling it down, Cale standing there and admiring her as she reached for the pizza. “Oh, come on,” she says when he holds it away from her.
“Emeline, no.”
“Why not?”
“You’re going to drop it if you try to get up the ladder with it.”
“Oh, and you’ll be better?”
Cale goes in front of her, unable to hide the smile on his face as he moves on the ladder, one hand trying to keep his balance, the other hand holding onto the box of Emeline’s sacred pizza.
“Don’t let it tip,” he hears her yell, “You’re going to let all the cheese slide off and you’ll ruin it.”
He lets out a laugh, pretending to start to drop it to tease her, Emeline yelling at him again. “You care more about the pizza than you do about me, don’t you? What if I were falling and the pizza falling too was the only thing that would save my life?”
“Right now, yes.”
He gets to the top, giving his hand out to Emeline to help her up the final steps for the two of them to climb into her bedroom window. “You really should have this locked when you’re not home.”
“Frankie unlocks it for me if she thinks she’s going to have a girl over.”
“How many times have you done this?” Cale asks her, watching her as she wiggled the heavy window open, practically folding herself in half to get in while trtying to keep the window up.
“Enough times that I can somehow do it while drunk, not enough times that I could remember that this is the way to get back in.”
Cale watches her in awe as she does this with ease, wondering if she would be more graceful when she was fully sober. He felt the heat rush to his face, hating that he had this reaction seemingly whenever he thought of her. There was no reason for him to think of her like this. He doubted she thought of him as often as he thought of her, her smile appearing in his mind when he was doing the most mundane things, her laugh interrupting his thoughts when he was trying to go through drills, her face on random people in the crowd during games distracting him when he was trying to get focused for the period.
“Are you coming in, or do I have to keep this open all night to talk to you?” Emeline asks him, snapping him out of his trance. He swings his leg over the sill, trying not to mess with her precious pizza. He hands it off to her before he fully gets in the window, Emeline turning back to him just as his other foot catches the sill, Cale losing his balance, taking Emeline with him as they both fall to the floor. Before he can comprehend his arms wrapped around her, the way she fits perfectly underneath him in every way he imagined before, Emeline bursts out laughing, her drunkenness taking over, pushing him off her. “Well, that’s one way to do it.”
Cale tries to collect himself, situating himself next to her while she opens the box. She takes in a whiff, Cale watching her as she closes her eyes, the smile on her face growing as she holds the pizza close to her face. She looked so happy, Cale mirroring the smile on her face. “This is the best thing I’ve ever seen,” she tells him, not taking her eyes off the box.
“It really is,” he says, looking at her.
She looks at him, the softness of his expression making her melt slightly inside, looking back at the pizza and biting her lip, hoping that it would pass as her concentrating on ripping into the food in front of her. She hands him the slice, taking her own. “This is the best thing ever.”
Cale nods, agreeing with her more than she knew. There was no reason why he should be here with her on the floor of her bedroom other than he wanted to be. He could feel his phone buzzing in his pocket, his friends probably wondering where he had gone off to instead of being at the bar with them like he had promised he would be. He couldn’t keep leaving them for Emeline, but everytime she looked at him and told him he wanted to leave with her, he had to say yes. He would regret it every time he said no, for whatever reason it was that he had to say no, being with Emeline was always the better option.
“Your phone keeps going off.” Emeline’s voice takes him away from his thoughts, seeing her look at him.
“It’s probably just the guys.”
Emeline’s eyes shift back to the pizza, knowing that he wasn’t telling her the truth, whether he meant to or not. She didn’t know why she felt upset over who was calling him or texting him. There was no reason to. “You should check your phone.”
He pulls his phone out of his pocket, hoping that he was right about it being his teammates. Three missed calls, one voice, four texts, all from Saylor asking where he was and why she couldn’t find him at the bar.
Emeline glances at his phone before he sighs and tucks it away. “You should probably call her.”
“It’s fine.”
“Cale.”
“Emmie.”
She takes in a deep breath, the nickname suddenly making her feel very different coming from him. “If your girlfriend is trying to contact you like that, you need to go call her.”
“I’ll do it tomorrow.”
“You should go, Cale.”
He stares at her, watching her try to fiddle with the edges of the pizza box, trying to figure out if she’s serious. She doesn’t show any sign that she’s joking, trying her best to not look at him. He takes in a deep breath, knowing that she was right. He gets up, going back out her window and down her fire escape, leaving her alone on her bedroom floor.

Different Skates: Cale AU - Pt. 2

A/N: Okay, so a couple of things: 1.) I know this wasn’t super anticipated but still I apologize that this took so long to write (I started it the day after I posted the first part, that was in Oct), 2.) it’s Thanksgiving themed and I’m very aware that it is way past that but I didn’t want to have to go back and change a bunch of stuff, 3.) there’s supposed to be a couple more parts and with how I have it planned out other already passed holidays will be in them, 4.) this is very unedited and I’m sorry if it’s choppy like i said it’s been written over multiple months which is very not me (normally i write everything in one sitting), 5.) I hope y’all like it!
Once again thanks to that irl friend for the peer pressure and for the much asked for peer pressure from @typical-simplelove and to @savoies for being my soundboard
Warnings: swear words, she/her pronouns for the reader, if I missed anything let me know!
Word count: 4,402 💀
—————-
“Okay great practice today guys. Go home and rest up, don’t forget tomorrow night at my house, team dinner. Be there by seven and please dress decent for pictures.” Charlie was just finishing up as you walked out of the break room you used to edit in.
Tomorrow night was Thanksgiving dinner with the whole team. So tonight you get to help cook everything that can be cooked ahead of time. Charlie was helping too, but only with the stuff that doesn’t require the stove or oven. He complains every time we don’t let him use them, but in our defence he almost burned the house down. He’s not allowed to have candles either. He’s mostly gonna help our dad put up tables and chairs; after they move the furniture and clean the living room.
The boys are so loud in the locker room that you can hear them all the way out here in the lobby. You're doing some last minute touch ups to some game shots before posting them to the team Instagram while you wait for Charlie. You hear footsteps approaching and look up. It’s Cale. He looks over just as you look up.
“Hey Y/n, how are you?” He asks with a smile.
“I’m okay, you?” You’ve decided to be civil with him since he’s been nice to you so far.
“I’m pretty good, excited for a couple days off to rest.”
“Yeah that’s fair.” You don’t really know what to say after that so you just kind of sit there.
“Hey Caler, you still coming over tonight to help move stuff?” Charlie looks at Cale as he walks up beside him. Also what? You knew nothing about this.
“Yeah of course. Just gotta go home to drop my stuff off then I’ll head your way.” His eyes flick from you to your brother and then back again.
“Awesome, thanks dude. I’m not sure Pops can help move the furniture anymore, even if he thinks he can.” Charlie’s not wrong. Your dad has had some issues with arthritis for a long time but it’s gotten a lot worse in the last year. You just had figured you’d help this time around.
“Yeah not a problem. I’m gonna head out now, but I’ll see y’all in a bit.” He gives you a little
wave before heading to the parking lot.
“You warming up to him yet?” Charlie asks as you head to his car,” “he’s a really nice guy.”
“I know, he’s alright. I thought I was helping you tonight?”
“That was the plan, but I was talking to him about tomorrow and mentioned Pops not being able to move stuff anymore and he offered to help.” Charlie shrugs as he turns the key.
———————-
You were elbow deep in the turkey (literally) when the doorbell rang. Your mom yelled for Charlie to get the door. His footsteps thundered down the stairs as he ran to let Cale in.
This turkey was the most annoying thing to deal with, and you still had a second one to go. Your mom loves to go all out for the team dinners, especially since she knows not all of the guys have family that does. This year she decided to let you deal with the turkeys instead of the sides. Which fair but you were more of a dessert kind of gal. You didn’t mind doing the turkey, you know it’s your mom’s way of passing the torch; but you’d rather be making pies and cookies right now. Your mom just insists on plucking and dressing and all of that ourselves instead of just getting a frozen one, why you have no idea but it’s a pain in your ass right now.
“Hey Ma, Cale and I are gonna move furniture so we can set up the tables!” Charlie yelled before disappearing into the living room.
“Alright just be careful!” She yelled back before turning to the doorway, “ Hi Cale, how are you sweetie?”
“Great Mrs. Y/LN, you?” When you looked up he was standing just outside the kitchen door, he caught your eye and smiled. Giving him a small smile you looked back to the turkey you were violating. Gosh this is going to take forever. You blow a piece of hair out of your face before it gets totally in your view.
“I know told you to call me Melissa, and I’m fine dear. You better run off and help Charlie before he decides he can move that heavy furniture by himself.”
“I’m on it, don't worry.” Is the last thing he says before he disappears into the living room.
“He’s such a sweet boy. Your father wasn’t happy about us deciding he wasn’t helping but we compromised with him being able to “supervise” whatever that hell that means.” She shook her head before walking to the over to pull out two of the pies.
There is so much food that we still have to cook, you were just glad that your mom has it figured out perfectly. You’re still gonna be up a couple more hours but there’s enough to do you won’t even realize.
——————-
The boys are watching a game in the living room. The only reason you can tell is cause of the yelling. They finished setting up all the tables and chairs an hour ago. Both turkeys are ready to be cooked and the only thing left to do tonight is clean up and set stuff out for tomorrow morning. Thank goodness, you felt like you could take a nap right there on the kitchen island. You’ve had a long day between editing, two practices (both dance and skating) the gym, and some schoolwork plus cooking; you were ready to curl up in bed and sleep the night away.
“Okay we’ll take a quick break then clean up. Everything we need for tomorrow should be set out so that we don’t have to worry about it. All the desserts are in the fridge or are covered and on the counter. The only thing for tomorrow is the sides and setting out places. Good work kiddo. The turkeys look great.”
“Thanks Ma, pies look good too. Can’t wait to dig in tomorrow.” Dessert was by far your favourite part of the holidays. Best food group in your opinion.
You both plopped down on the stools at the island. Grabbing the remote from the counter, you turn the tv on to some Christmas movie. It was one of your mom's favourites so you turned the volume up so she could hear it better. Not even five minutes in you heard the boys head towards the kitchen. Charlie no doubt on his way to steal a cookie or six.
“Really?! Christmas movies already? It’s not even Thanksgiving?!”
“Hush Charles, you know Christmas starts on the first in this family.” This argument has been going on between your mom and Charlie since he was ten. You and your pops stayed out of it.
“Christmas starts in October for my family.” You look over to Cale, who’s leaning against the island right next to you.
“Bro what? That’s even more crazy than my mom.” Charlie was gobsmacked.l, “What about Halloween?!”
“Oh yeah we decorate for that too, but the movies and music start then.”
“Dude there is something so wrong with you people.” Charlie shakes his head before sneaking towards the counter by the fridge. Where the desserts were set.
“Charlie, you leave the food alone or you will be cleaning the whole kitchen tonight.” Mom says without looking from the TV.
“Fine.” He heads back to the living room where your dad was still watching the game.
“I can help clean up tonight.” You looked back to Cale after he said that.
“You don’t need to do that, me and Y/n have got it, we just needed to rest a bit. Plus you’ve done enough.”
“Please Melissa, I insist. You’ve done so much for the team, it’s only fair at least one of us helps.”
“Fine, but Y/n will help. You don’t know where everything goes and she won’t mind.” Your mom gets up to head to the living room, stopping to kiss the top of your head and pat Cale’s arm as she walks by.
A little bit of an assumption there mother but okay. You didn’t really mind honestly, it wasn’t fair the Cale was cleaning up in someone else’s house. Even if he insisted.
“You don’t actually have to help, you’ve done a lot today too. Just tell me where stuff goes and I’ll put it there.” Cale is now looking down at where you’re still sat on the stool.
“It’s not fair that you’re cleaning up our mess, I’ll help. I’m not even that tired.” You stand up from the stool and move over to the sink. You let out a big yawn before making eye contact with Cale. He’s trying not to smile.
“You sure about that?” He’s totally smiling now. And you’re a little surprised to find that you’re smiling back.
“Okay maybe I am tired, but I still should help.”
“Yes, you can help by telling me what to do. All I have to do is do it. Teamwork makes the dream work.”
“That is the cheesiest thing you could’ve said, but fine you win. This time.” You hop up on the counter.
“Okay where should I start?” Cale turns to look at you expectantly.
“Hmmm dishwasher would probably be best.” Was your reply.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Okay now that all that is done, what’s next?” Cale looks at you again. Those pretty blue eyes meeting your own. He tilts his head a little. That’s when you realised that you were kind of starring.
“Oh yeah! That’s it, I don’t think we have anything else to do tonight. Everything else we have to do in the morning. So you can go hang out with Charlie. I think he’s still in the other room watching the game. Thanks for all your help today.” You hopped off the counter and walked to where he was standing by the island.
“Okay, I actually think I’m gonna head out. I can come help out in the morning. I’m not the best cook but I think I can handle it.” He’s giving you a half smile and between the Christmas music from the movie still playing and the low lighting in the kitchen; he looks entirely too attractive right now.
“You don’t need to do that. You’ve done a lot already.”
“Ah no it’s fine. I got nothin else to do.”
“Alright. I’ll see you in the morning then. We’re gonna start at about eight since dinner is gonna be at noon. Just come over whenever after that.”
“I’ll be here at eight then. See you in the morning Y/N.” He gives you a nod and a smile before heading to the front door. You hear him stop and say goodnight to your family before the front door shuts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You’re totally dragging. It’s too early to do this. Not even changing out of your pajamas, you head downstairs. There’s already a mix of smells happening. Your mom must have put the turkeys in early.
Walking into the kitchen you slowly register everything going on. Your mom is checking the turkeys in the oven, your dad is drinking coffee and reading the paper from last week at the island, there’s a Christmas movie playing and Charlie is nowhere to be found. Figures.
Twenty minutes later, you’re slightly more awake, breakfast has been eaten, you’ve started helping with the sides, and Charlie’s just now walking through the kitchen door. And Cale is right behind him.
“Morning loser,” Charlie says as he bumps you into the counter where you were chopping potatoes.
“Charlie, stop messing with your sister. She’s helping me, unlike you.” She gives him a pointed look as he heads back to where Cale is standing, “ morning Cale, how are you?”
“I’m okay, would be better if my truck had started this morning.” Ah so that’s why Charlie was gone.
“Ah yeah Charlie said that’s what happened. Will you be able to figure out what it was?”
You tune out their conversation and continue with your task.
~~~~~~~~
Cale’s POV
When I walked into the kitchen I was not expecting to see a very tired and annoyed looking Y/N. Who definitely just got more annoyed when Charlie bumped her into the counter. Who’s still in her pjs. That have reindeer all over them.
She’s so freaking adorable.
Yesterday I felt like we might’ve gotten a little closer to that friend line. She laughed at most of my horrible jokes when I was cleaning up the kitchen last night. Honestly I cut it pretty close to my curfew. I probably shouldn’t’ve stayed, but Melissa looked tired and as much as I could hope Charlie would’ve helped clean up; I know better than that. So I stayed way later than I should’ve and had to rush home.
Shaking my head I answer Melissa’s questions about my truck. It wouldn’t start this morning. Charlie and I both think between how old it is and the cold front that moved in last night, that my truck might not be starting for a while. He offered to take me to practice and school, so that helps at least.
~~~~~~~~
A couple hours later your mom is at the door welcoming all of the boys in. Between Charlie and Cale helping you and your mom, everything got done so you had extra time to get ready and hide in your room for a bit. At least you can wear something comfy. You have to look nice for pictures so you grabbed a sweater to go with your leggings.
The boys were all really loud and you were kind of over it already. Your mom wanted you downstairs at least. She understood why you didn’t exactly want to be around them. So you were sitting on the kitchen counter; reading a book. The only guys that had sought you out to greet you were John and Tyson. They both gave you a hug and asked how you were before joining the rest of the team in the living room.
You were about halfway through your book when somebody hopped up across from you on the island. Looking up you realise it’s Cale.
“Why are you in here?” It came out a little harsh but he didn’t seem bothered by it.
“They’re getting really loud and I get headaches easily.” Cale shrugs, “I can find somewhere else to hang out if you want me to.”
“No you’re fine, I was just wondering. Why do you get headaches easily?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cale’s POV
When she asked why I was in here I panicked a little. I mean I was mostly in here for the quiet, but also kind of to see her. I don’t even know why. I think she’s just nice to be around. Especially compared to the guys.
“Oh, it’s cause of all of the concussions I’ve gotten in the past.”
“Hmm” that’s all she gives me before going back to her phone.
I feel kind of awkward just looking at her. I’d love to ignore the world and be in my phone, but it’s almost dead, plus it would make my headache worse. It’s quiet in here, not awkward but almost… comforting. Honestly it’s kind of nice. I end up looking out the window above the sink. My eyes catching on the snow flurries outside.
“It’s snowing.”
Y/N looks up from her phone before setting it down on the counter and jumping down. Walking over to the sink, she stares outside.
“I love the snow. It’s so pretty and peaceful.” She sounds wistful as she says it.
I have to fight myself from saying she is too, “Me too, winter is my favorite season because of it.”
“Same here.” She turns around and meets my eyes, “this is off topic but if I’m going to be completely honest would rather be skating than here right now.”
“Well if I had to be completely honest, I’d say the same. Why do you not want to be here?” I have a feeling I know what her answer is going to be.
“I assume Charlie told you all about what happened, I’m also going to assume you’re smart enough to connect those dots,” I nod and she shrugs, “honestly you don’t seem all that bad. I know I came off harsh, Charlie told me all about that. I’m sorry. I am trying to be nicer, especially since you don’t act like an asshole like the rest of them. Just know that, that doesn’t mean we’re friends, just that you’re not a total jerk. Anyways, why don’t you want to be here?”
Her statement relieves me. I’m glad I don’t come across like an asshole. I didn't think I did, but it’s always nice to hear. Especially from someone as biassed as her.
“Well mine’s kind of similar, I don’t really want to hang out with the guys. I Know it’s good for camaraderie and whatever, but they annoy the hell out of me. And they all are in fact a bunch of assholes. Even to teammates. Plus skating is so much more fun than sitting here doing nothing.”
That got a smile out of her. She turned back to the window.
~~~~~~~~~
“Dinner was good as always ma, thanks for inviting the team.” A chorus of the rest of them following Charlie’s thanks.
I ended up seated between Cale and Charlie. I think they did that on purpose. Especially since John and Tyson were across from me too. They totally surrounded me so I didn’t have to sit next to the jerks. I’m totally grateful but I wanna be anywhere but here. I lean over to Charlie.
“Hey you going anywhere later?”
“I’ll probably go hang with the guys but Tys will drive.”
“Okay, I’ll have the car then.” Charlie nods before continuing his conversation.
Now I have to figure out a plan to dip after pictures so I can get to the rink.
~~~~~~~
Cale’s POV
It’s picture time. And nothing against Melissa, but she has no control over any of this. She’s currently standing behind the camera and trying to get us lined up so we all fit. It’s not going well, Charlie is nowhere to be found and Y/N looks like she’d rather be anywhere else. Can’t blame her, I’m feeling the same way.
“Hey hey everyone chill out and listen.” There’s Charlie. I can hear him but I can’t see him. He’s still shouting orders when I look back over to Y/N. She sees me, rolls her eyes and shakes her head. Then she walks towards the couch, and steps up so she’s standing on it.
“EVERYONE SHUT THE HELL UP! I UNDERSTAND NONE OF YOU WANT TO DO THIS CAUSE I SURE AS HELL DONT. BUT THE FASTER EVERYONE LISTENS AND DOES WHAT THEYRE SUPPOSED TO DO AND THE WUICKER YOURE OUT OF HERE AND OFF DOING WHATEVER THE HELL YOU IDIOTS WANT TO DO!”
Every single person in the room turned to look at where she was looking down on all of them. Silently everyone moved where Melissa had originally placed them. Y/N got down from the couch and walked over to where I was standing on the outside of the group.
“I’m glad that worked, I was tired of standing there.”
“Me too, ready to go home and change and do nothing the rest of the day.” I whisper back as I move to tuck in next to John. She moves right next to me so that she’s in the shot too.
“About that, I was planning on heading to the rink after this. I normally would prefer to go alone but you mentioned wanting to skate earlier so…” she kind of trails off and I turn my head to look down at her, “would you want to go with me? Totally cool if not, just thought I’d offer.”
I can feel the smile stretch across my face.
“I would love to go to the rink. I’d have to get my skates from home first though.”
“We can stop on the way to the rink.” She gives me a small smile and I nod.
“Cale! Y/N! Look at the camera please.” We both follow Melissa’s directions and everyone is excited to be released from the pictures from hell.
“Cale?” I turn to see Y/N still next to me, “I’m gonna go talk to my mom then I’m ready when you are.”
“Okay, meet you at the front?” She nods and is gone.
Now I just gotta figure out what to tell Charlie. He invited me to go hang out with him, John, and Tys later. But if so much rather go to the rink. I look around the room before I spot him by his mom and make my way over.
“Hey Charlie I’m gonna head home. Thanks for inviting me to go out but I’m not feeling it today.”
“That’s alright, do you need a ride?”
“Nah I got it figured out.” I kind of hate lying to him. Not that I’m lying technically, but it sure feels like it.
“Alright man. Let me know if you need anything. Have a good night.” He holds his hand out to shake and I do the same.
“Thanks Melissa for dinner. You and Y/N did really good. I had fun.” Not a total lie but not a truth either.
I turn to head to the front door when someone pokes me in the side. I look down and lock eyes with Y/N. Who’s smirking like she just caught someone in the act.
“You’re a liar! You did not have fun.” She whispers to me as we head out together.
“I did have some fun, I wasn’t totally miserable.” We both climb into Charlie and hers shared jeep.
“Uh huh sure. I totally believe you. But did you really like the food?” She looks over at me as she puts the key into the ignition. She looks a little nervous. I wonder why. Then it clicks in my brain. Charlie said something about it being her first time doing the turkey. That makes sense.
“Yeah everything was really good. I liked the turkey a lot.” I give her an affirming nod.
“That’s good, I was a little worried I’d fuck it up somehow. I’ve seen mom do it a million times, but I definitely was not confident in actually doing it myself.” She turns to back out of the driveway then looks at me before she continues.
“I have absolutely no idea where you live.” I laugh a little before directing her to my house.
~~~~~~~~
By the time you pull up to the rink, the sun has disappeared from the sky and there’s only a few other cars in the parking lot. Perfect. You’d have the ice to yourselves mostly. Which is great because you really wanted to work on your triple lutz. It was the hardest move in your program and it showed. You needed it to not show. And if you could get your coach off your ass about it, you definetley wouldn’t be mad.
The moment your blades hit the ice, you feel so much better. The last couple of days have been a lot. Being on the ice just made everything better. You could hear Cale cut through the ice behind you. Pushing yourself off, you started some lazy laps. There was a couple of kids on the ice too, so you kept an eye on them to make sure there was no collisions. Skating over to the corner you made sure the coast was clear before marking your jumps. Starting small at first before making it to the bigger jumps. There was no way you were going to go full out on everything you did tonight, you just had to make sure you were warm before going for the triple. Feeling warm enough, you went for it.
And landed on your ass.
“Fuck.” Starring at the ceiling you went over it in your head. Knowing it was exactly what your coach had said (that you didn’t have enough momentum) you got up, shook it off. And went again. And landed on your ass again. And again. And again.
“You good?” Opening your eyes you saw Cale’s face, right above you. Oh right. You had got in your head and forgot he was there.
“Yeah, I’m good.” Taking the hand he offered, you pulled yourself up, “I’m gonna go again so you might want to watch out.” Cale wisely backed out of your way. By now all the kids were gone, and it was just the two of you.
Taking a deep breath, you pushed off. Up in the air you went. One, two three. Hell yeah. Now you just had to stick it. And you did, kind of. Your hand touched the ground to steady yourself, but it was improvement.
“That was so cool!” Cale looked a little awed. Had he never seen a skating program before? It was kind of cute the way he looked so excited.
“I’ll agree with you there, but I need to work on that landing. I at least got three full turns. I’ve only done that once before.”
“Well I mean that's an improvement right?” You shrug, “I think that calls for a break” he gives you a mischievous smile.
“What were you thinking for this break?”
He doesn’t say anything as he slowly skates towards you, until
“TAG!” He barely touches your arm before he’s off.
~~~~~~~~~~
By the time you get home after dropping Cale off and taking a shower, you’re exhausted. There’s a smile on your face though.
Before falling asleep you send Cale quick text.
You: I had fun tonight :)
Cale: me too :)
you couldn’t help but gain a great attachment with the small, kind and rosy boy in your kindergarten class. you were very socially anxious, which is valid considering you were being forced to submerge yourself in just the beginning of an insanely toxic social structure. and for what?
he made everything better. he was so sweet with you, it’s safe to say even too sweet. he almost always focused his attention on you, and you never understood why. when you felt like you didn’t belong anywhere, he would quite literally grab your hand and drag you everywhere with him. you always wondered why he wasn’t like all the other stupid boys playing soccer and bothering the other girls. why he always, at any opportunity, chose to spend every minute of his time with you. he invaded your space everyday with his blaring sunshine personality and even if you bothered him whenever you could, you knew you needed him.
so you and cale grew up together, and you two were always learning every possible thing there is to know about each other. that also meant that you two were going everywhere and experiencing everything together. you could list every single shitty thing that's happened to you so far throughout your life, but then you can also list everything cale has done to help you through it. and it goes both ways. cale often shares his gratitude for your ability to take him out of stupid situations, or help avoid them all together. he can be quite naive sometimes, which always makes you feel the need to defend him because you couldn’t possibly see him not have that fluffy ass smile plastered on his face.
he has come to know you aren’t necessarily the most exuberant person, which is also supposedly a reason for your incapability of keeping relationships (per a handful of stupid assholes). but cale, unlike the others, never minded. he always told you how he loves the way he can break you. since he has, making his favourite sight in the whole world: a smile creeping up on the end of your lips — it’s absolutely picture perfect if he miraculously gets a giggle too. if you must say so, nobody has had a higher “breaking y/n count” than cale himself. he just adds it to all of his other impeccable stats.
once cale left for umass, it was embarrassingly obvious how you began spiralling, and it presented you with an epiphany. the main point: you are a complete simp for him and it’s honestly disgusting. you can’t even say the exact day you fell in love with him, because there wasn’t a day that you didn’t. so in conclusion, cale is the only person you need by your side, because you are entirely positive you would go insane if otherwise. even if you sometimes act like that’s not the case.
so you drove to massachusetts one day to go visit him. that night, you two headed to a campus party where cale ended up quaffing far too many drinks. dragging his mumbley ass to his room, he slumped down and laid half on the bed and half on the floor. you gave out a small laugh, not without rolling your eyes, as he was trying his very best to tell you a story he could barely make out.
that was until he started muttering things about you. you stopped fixing his room and sat on the floor beside him. he turned to look at you, his head dangling off the bed now. “i wanna tell you sm’thing” you nodded, “what does your blabbermouth wanna tell me now?”
he giggled, before he spat out everything he wanted to say, all at once. telling you how he can’t get you out of his mind, how he misses someone waiting for him after games and practices, or the way you make fun of him, and your laugh, “oh that fuckin laugh you have it kills me y/n, in the best way.”
“i think the blood is rushing to your head.” you said, almost instinctively and you didn’t know why. your self-sabotage started to seep in, and you hated how you always made yourself feel as if you aren’t worthy for someone like cale to reciprocate your feelings.
but you were so grateful for his slurred confessions, as it eased your worries of looking like a total fool when you end up telling him what you came to say. he stared looking at you, waiting for your reaction. “do you hate me now?” he asked.
“no.”
“i should’ve just shut up. oh fuck no i messed it up, im s’stupid. ugh you’re always so right i'm such a dumbass. fuck-” he began mumbling, as he sat up and rubbed his face.
“cale stop.” you demanded. “you’re not stupid. you’re stupid for thinking you're stupid.”
“thanks” he said, softly. a pinky shade started to itch up on his face.
you turned to him and looked into his glossy eyes as he nipped on his lip. “okay. i miss you. i need you. i need you so much. i always knew that but i tried so hard to act like i don't. but life’s shit with you over here” you said, while you internally cursed yourself for the incoming wave of tears.
“nobody’s ever made me feel the way you make me feel. i’m not this bitchy, grumpy asshole when i’m with you. you don’t piss me off, not like you might think. no, i love you too much to think you're annoying.” you ranted.
you heard cale sniffle, as you looked up at him you saw tears falling down his face far more than yours — predictable. you laughed at him, reached for his hand and pulled him down to sit with you. “i love you, s’much” he said, as he pulled you in for a tight hug. and you loved it, feeling like you could just finally melt into him after discarding the weight off your shoulders.
cale felt the same. he thanked the far too many beers he had to give him that push. it didn’t end up going as he had rehearsed for years, but he didn’t lose you and he was so grateful about that. “it’s been a privilege that you let me accompany you through everything, all these years. i gotta say it’s something so very special to see you, you, oh you, let yourself be, you, with me. the really you.” cale told you, his head buried in your hair. you smiled, he wasn’t really making sense but you understood.
just as much as he’s always understood you.
—
it’s an average frigid and snowy day in colorado, and you find yourself cuddled up on your couch, watching a show on crave. you were wrapped up in the custom made quilt your now boyfriend gave you when you were both in middle school. it might sound corny, but god it was comfortable.
the freshly decorated christmas tree lit up the dim apartment. it was already mid-december when you were semi-forced to set it up, despite the fact cale originally wanted to put it up in november. cale was in the kitchen cooking up dinner for the two of you. you could hear him humming tunes to himself, something he often did which you love cause he always made sure to remind you, you weren’t alone. even if you teased him that you appreciated his absence when he was on road trips, he knows you always missed his stupid humming or his frequent whining, and yeah even his heart warming hugs that he would always refused to end.
he walks over with the bowls of food in hand. organizing the plates on the coffee table in front of the two of you, he can finally accompany you in finishing what you were watching. not forgetting to gently kiss your temple as he sat down beside you. and you may or may not have devoured his “classic home cooked meal, made with love” faster than cale himself, which he immediately laughed about since you had earlier mentioned you weren’t “that, that hungry”.
your pleasantly snug state started to diminish when cale mumbled the plans for tomorrow. “what? absolutely not!” you quickly stated, as cale made his way back to you. his team was hosting their annual family skate, which you often tried to dodge since cale always seemed to somehow embarrass you in front of everyone with your lack of skating abilities. and now, the catch this year? it would be in a huge outdoor rink.
“oh come on, everyone’s gonna go. it’s gonna be adorably decorated and… don’t forget you still need to learn how to actually skate,” cale says, booping your nose. “and, look, we already finished watching everything on our list, so we gotta make a whole new list and we can do that sunday.”
“no. no, look how cold it is outside! and i don’t recall being chilly in the cozy comfort of my own home.”
you fall back when cale tries to reach his hands out to grab yours. “i’ll give you the warmest hoodie i have so you can add it on top of the 50 layers you already habitually put on. i promise, baby ” cale reasons, as you try to fight him off so he couldn’t pull you up. you shoot him a look as he pouts at you, “you love hot chocolate, with whip cream. and i’ll make sure they have marshmallows too, of course.” he continued trying to convince you along with his sweet smile.
rolling your eyes at him. “fine.”
“fine? yes? perfect! oh honey, you’ll have fun, i promise. don’t worry baby.” he says, pulling you into his chest and kissing you everywhere. you scrunched up your face, trying to move the opposite way of his attacking lips. “you let me fall, makar?” you say, sternly pointing him down and giving him a warning look. he throws his arms up, his cheeks beginning to blush naturally, “i won’t, i won’t. never would. you know that.” you scoffed, “you better say that.”
as you made your way to grab some juice, cale sneaked up behind you. “wanna go to costco?” cale suggests enthusiastically, before snuggling his nose into the crook of your neck while wrapping his arms around your waist. you shook your head, “cale, you do know you’re literally the only one that loves going there. not me.”
“lies, you love their selection of snacks and you always eat allllllll the ones i buy. if you didn’t love costco, you wouldn’t eat their — well priced — stuff either.”
“i still prefer sam’s club” you unhesitatingly denote.
cale gasps, dramatically holding his chest as you look up at him. you moved your head down to pour the juice into a cup, and you couldn’t help but break into a tiny smile. he was such a kid.
“y/n, take that back” he whiningly utters. you walked to him, mockingly booping his nose “no”
but you couldn’t hold the smirk back, and cale knew you were just teasing, like always. even if you did hate going to costco, especially because of the impeccably large crowds and the fact that the promoted samples never seem to actually be ready to grab, cale loved it. and you know you always want cale to be happy.
—
the following day, you did not hesitate to grab the hoodie cale mentioned you could use from his closet. as you stand in the mirror, what’s accompanying the sweater and your puffer jacket, is a “heat tech” t-shirt, a thick long sleeve, some long johns below your fleece sweats and your long and fat scarf wrapped around your neck. you also quickly yanked cale’s favourite beanie from his drawer which was a compromise he was willing to make despite having to dig for another hat to wear.
cale couldn’t help but laugh at the sight of you struggling to put your thick boots on with your million layers. “i don't have to put them on, you know.” you taunted him. “no i’m sorry, i’m sorry. let me help you, here” he said, as he got on his knees to loosen the laces on each of the boots.
when he held one out for you, you snickered. “what? what happened?” he asked innocently, looking up at you. “i like it when you’re on your knees. specifically for me.” you say, running your hands through his hair and tugging just a bit. his reaction was predictable, his cheeks immediately turning flush as he cleared his throat and proceeded to tie your laces back together. you often take much enjoyment in getting him all flustered with your suggestive comments. he just looks really cute.
—
once you arrived at the outdoor rink, you found out it actually wasn’t as cold as you made it seem, but you weren’t going to let cale use that against you so you stayed with every layer you had put on. even if a part of you admits that you admire his cheeky smile whenever he knows he’s right.
before heading towards the ice, cale asks you if you want some hot chocolate first, as you noticed many other couples were heading to the little hut. you said you were fine, preferring the idea of smudging whip cream on his face after skating just in case he does end up dropping you.
sitting on the bench, cale helped you put on your skates before his. a few of his teammates were happy to see you. ej had a mischievous grin on his face as he greeted you. “just let me know when you wanna gang up on your boy.” he whispers in your ear, making you smirk and nod. ej was a gem, he always liked how you would affectionately bug cale. and he was always ready to help you.
“you better look like a stanley cup champion out there.” you tell cale as he grabs your hand. he laughed, “oh i will!”
gripping on his forearms, you finally step onto the ice trying to not immediately slip. cale starts skating backwards, as he lightly pulls you in to follow him, in which you do at a seemingly better rate than the first time he took you to a rink. continuing with the movements, and gaining more confidence on the ice, you mimicked some of cale’s skate tricks seeing where it would take you. you simper as you learned how to take a long stride and break on your own with a ‘t-stop’. and then again but with a ‘plow stop’. though, cale catching you before you could fall.
“see, you are having fun.” cale mentions as he smiles, turning to skate beside you again. “yeah yeah. whatever. i mean it’s more fun when you don’t fall.”
doing laps around the rink, you catch ej looking over at the two of you. so you tilt your head, signalling he could start to fool around. but before he could even make his way over to you or cale, your skate gets caught on a dent in the ice making you swing your arms, sending cale falling back.
he fell on his back, his head didn’t touch the ice — but you didn’t know that. “oww” he whines. you turn to him, softly chuckling at the sight of his sprawled out body. but then he closed his eyes, and held his hand to his head, groaning. “oh shit, cale!” you yelp, falling to your knees to look at him. “did you hit your head?? fuck i told you they should give out helmets here.”
“mm god my head is pounding.” he mumbles, trying to get up. “don’t get up, you could have a concussion. you should know that.” you tell him. he groans once again so you start to internally panic. you just pushed, and potentially injured, your boyfriend who has to go back and play in a couple of days. “shit. cale don’t die. fuck don’t die you have a game in four days and i can’t have your coach hating me for this.”
nate comes around, “hey cale, you okay?” he asks. cale doesn’t move, nor says a thing. you shake his arm, and nothing. “cale!!” you call out. he’s limp.
“oh god i killed him, nate. fuck i’m screwed. no cale wake up. please wake up. come on you rosy cheeked sunshine boy. fucking get uuuuup.” you whine at him, shaking his entire body as much as you can.
“BOO” cale yells, jolting up and grabbing you. you let out a tiny shriek, scrunching your shoulders and closing your eyes. he was in a fit of giggles. “CALE DOUGLAS MAKAR NEVER FUCKING DO THAT.” you cry out.
“i got youuuu” he mocks. you smack his shoulder, not as gently. he smiles, “it’s cute that you thought i died.”
“that’s not funny. i thought you smacked your head.”
“it’s kinda funny.”
“no it’s not.”
pulling him up, everyone else laughed at you two. ej truly surprised cale turned the tables on you. nate patted cale’s back before you started heading over to go get hot chocolate.
“two please.” cale orders before shaking off the snow on his pants. the lady hands you both your cups and you head over to the bench. “so you didn’t hit your head?” you asked cale quietly, looking at him with soft eyes. he smiled, “no, and you didn’t see so i took advantage.” you sneer at him.
as cale blew his hot chocolate, you scooped a bit of the whip cream and hid your hand. “hey, it’s pretty h-” cale began saying before you took a small sip and acted like you burned your tongue. you whimpered in pain, shutting your mouth. “hot it’s pretty hot. are you okay?” he asks, wrapping his arm around you to pull you closer.
that’s when you lifted your hand and smeared the whip cream all over his face, cale gasped. “y/n!!” he exclaimed, wiping off what fell on his eyes. you started laughing at him.
“how dare you. i didn’t even let you fall”
“it’s funny.”
he laughed, despite the way he was still cleaning his face. “it is funny.”
“glad you think so.”
he grabs your cup and moves it behind him with his own, “that’s enough for you.” you still had a smile on your face. he moves his finger and dabs a bit of whip cream from his face onto yours. so you grab his blushy cheeks and pull him in for a kiss. his lips were warm and soft and you couldn’t help but feel all lovesick inside. “i love you” you murmured. “i love you more, grumpy”
