BRZRKR #3
BRZRKR #3 BOOM! Studios 2021 Written by Keanu Reeves & Matt Kindt Illustrated by Ron Garney Coloured by Bill Crabtree Lettered by Clem Robins * The shocking history of B is revealed as Diana digs deeper into his memories. * Meanwhile, the mysterious Caldwell makes his next move to take advantage of this information -- and put his master plan into motion. Now that we’ve been delving into his earliest memories I am finding myself loving this book more and more. There is this amazing depth and complexity to the story we see this issue that took me to church and made me preach! We know that his mother went to the cave of their ancestors and prayed for a gift, which was granted in the form of a child, Unute the village calls him, and his father trained the boy to be just what the villages describes. The characterisation that we see is bloody fantastic and just the overall way we see how the old adage, “absolute power corrupts absolutely” couldn’t be any more apropos. I read this three times before sitting down to write this and each time I couldn’t believe my eyes and my mind as it just gets better with each reading not mention with each issue that’s come out. I am rather enjoying the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well. The character development is mindbogglingly brilliant thanks to the dialogue, the character interaction and how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter. Now i’m not exaggerating the character development made me run the gamut of emotions as we connect on a very personal level with B. He is so relatable to from a wide variety of people of all walks of life based on what we see here. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story we’re brought into this in a strong powerful way. I am a huge fan of the way that this is being structured and how we see the layers within the story continuing to grow, evolve, strengthen and emerge depending on what avenues are explored or open up. This is where the hardcore characterisation is and how we see his rage take over adding to the rich depth and complexity of a complicated life. The way that everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is impeccably achieved. The interiors here are extremely interesting. The linework is incredible and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to create this kind of detail work is astonishingly well rendered. That we see backgrounds utilised as prevalent as we do makes me happy as they expand the moments and bring us this sensational depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling. The colour work is equally as amazing. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is magnificently rendered. From a series that at first glance was nothing but pure violence it’s turned into this massively character driven vehicle that just so happens to have violence as his outlet. An outlet that while he relishes and lives for is probably something he could do without as it’s the only thing he’s ever known and can remember. Plus that science cannot replicate his abilities because he’s literally a gift from the gods and they cannot be duplicated is something they won’t accept and soon he’s going to realise they are using him for purposes far beyond what they’ve told him and god help them when he does. This is a sensationally written and illustrated story that will take you to depths of one man’s soul and back again until you cannot help but feel as if you have your own highly personal connection to him.
