Blog Tour: Top 5 Reasons to Read SWEET NIGHTMARE by Tracy Wolff! #tbrbeyondtours
Welcome to Book-Keeping and my stop on the TBR and Beyond Tours blog tour for Sweet Nightmare by Tracy Wolff, the first book in the new Calder Academy series! This one released yesterday, so you can snag it ASAP! I've got all the details for you below, plus my top 5 reasons to read it. If you're a fan of YA paranormal, you're gonna love this one!
About the Book
title: Sweet Nightmare author: Tracy Wolff publisher: Entangled Teen release date: 7 May 2024
The scariest school on earth Is about to experience real fear… Most schools are about being the best. This school? It’s about being the worst. Calder Academy is where the rogue paranormals go. The ones who break the rules or lose control. And when that happens for vamps, werewolves, witches, and dark fae? It gets pretty freaking scary. I should know. Because I’m trapped here. Look, every seventeen-year-old girl thinks their mom is a tyrant. But mine just happens to run Calder Academy, which paints a giant target on my back. The way I make it through these dark halls is by steering clear of the things―and kids―who go bump in the night. Especially Jude Abernathy-Lee. But when a freak storm hits our isolated island, I’m stuck without a backup plan. The power is gone. The lights are out. And our worst nightmares are suddenly real―and out for blood. Now the only way to survive is to align myself with one evil to avoid the other. And the only thing worse than the idea of getting close to Jude? Secretly loving every minute of it.

Top 5 Reasons to Read
Sweet Nightmare evokes all the feelings of the old glory days of paranormal YA books! ANY fan of YA paranormal is going to want to read this one asap.
Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Okay, so I don't think there was actually a bear shifter...and not lions or tigers, but definitely other big cats with two leopard shifters! This book has alll the great paranormal creatures plus some I'd not seen before: vampires, fae, wolf shifters, mermaids, sirens, even manticores (no, I did not know what they were until this book, lol).
Clementine has a difficult relationship with her family, but there is so much found family here that it just warmed my heart. it's one of my favorite tropes, and the Calder Academy students came together for each other in the most difficult of circumstances.
Clementine and Jude have the most adorable friends-to-lovers relationship! My favorite thing about them is how Jude calls her by the name of every citrus fruit so she calls him by the name of Beatles songs, ahhhh it's just too sweet!
Although this is YA, Tracy is not at all afraid to put her characters in dangerous situations and make them, even as teens, work through it. These kids are put through the wringer! She does not shy away from the gore and even death such situations would bring either, which I personally would have loved as a teen reader myself.
Seriously, if you're at all a fan of YA paranormal books, including Tracy's Crave series and older standards like Twilight, pick this one up!
Check out the Bookstagram tour as well! My post can be found here, and the full schedule is here.

Review:
A deadly magical school, nightmarish creatures, a fractured relationship... can one girl brave it all or will her nightmares consume her? Calder Academy is the scariest school on earth. Its an academy for rogue paranormals, filled with fae, vampires, mermaids, phoenixes, werewolves and more... the student body is practically killer. Clementine Calder is the daughter of the headmistress and a manticore and she is grieving the death of her favorite cousin, nursing the broken heart her ex best friend left three years ago after he kissed her and then ghosted her, and also her strange visions that she's begun seeing. Clementine is a 17 year old girl and she's already got so much on her plate, from being forced to clean up after the deadly creature menagerie that her school has to being forced to work with Jude Abernathy-Lee, the one boy who destroyed her heart that she just can't seem to stop loving. When a giant storm hits the isolated island that the school is on, things only get worse as the power goes out, nightmarish creatures are on the loose, and now Clementine and Jude have to face their unresolved relationship and the fact that they keep kissing each other and then pushing each other away. Can they survive the storm as well as the feelings between them? Clementine is plagued by ghostly visions and she's also begun seeing the past, present, and future, (and she's been transforming into a manticore without any real reason... talk about brutal puberty). She knows June is hiding something, he claims he loves her but can't be with her because he has to protect her... but he keeps coming back for her, and she knows he's hiding a big secret that could destroy everything. This is the first book in a series and it was quite a fun read, it definitely gave off Wednesday (Netflix show) vibes! I think its a fun high school paranormal read and the relationship drama was so much fun to read. I am excited to see where the second book goes and what happens to the characters!
*Spoiler: Clementine finds out that June is the Prince of Nightmares and accidentally killed his father when he was 7 years old and was sent to Calder. June harvests people's nightmares and they become tattoos on his skin. Clementine's mother has been the one using the nightmares that june harvests to create the monsters that have been going around the school. June lost control when he first kissed Clementine and swore to protect her by pushing her away. Now years later, they finally confront each other and all the truths come out. Clementine and June find out they are mates. Clementine also finds out that she is part manticore part oracle, and that her father is an oracle.*
*Thanks Netgalley , The TBR and Beyond Tours Team, and Entangled Publishing, LLC | Entangled: Teen for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

Charm
by Tracy Wolff / 4.5 stars
It took me long enough to get through this one - but now that I've finished, I want to jump back into the series all over again! And I'm excited to see what might be awaiting us at Calder Academy, following Remy.
I feel like everything I could have hoped to be accomplished was in this storyline. While there are definitely adventures left to be had with these characters, they're going to happen from a firm standing. I'm so happy how things ended for everyone (though I do hope for some more good vibes sent Macy's way.)
Not much of a review, but if you've read the series up to this point, you won't be disappointed!

I have officially completed the Crave series by Tracy Wolff. Crave is a six book series that started in 2020 and when I didn’t have anything to do that year in April of 2020 I discovered the first book on book pages from Facebook and recommendations from TikTok before permanently deleting my TikTok account for safety reasons in my orbit back in December 2022, (RIP Allison’s TikTok 07/2019-12/2022) I got every book every time it came out besides Amazon giving me book 2 as a gift for reviewing books I ordered from the past. Incase your wondering what Crave series is about, it is Twilight meets Harry Potter and it has supernatural such as Vampires, Witches, Dragons, Werewolves, and Gargoyles that attend a boarding school. Here is the list order of each book I like from 1st-6th and the book number:
1st. Covet book 3
2nd. Cherish book 6
3rd. Court book 4
4th. Crush book 2
5th. Charm book 5
6th. Crave book 1
All Instant 5 stars rating which rarely happens for me to have all books with 5 star ratings.
Crave series is based on Grace’s point of view who is a Gargoyle.
I cannot wait for the spin off based on Remy’s side of the story who we meet in Covet book 3 and is a Warlock. I am excited we get to finally read a Warlocks point of view and the last time I read a book that has a famous Warlock I like in it is Magnus from the Shadowhunters chronicles by Cassandra Clare and I love love love Warlocks.
In the crave series the boarding school is called Katmere Academy and in the upcoming spin off will be based on the Calder Academy.
Spin off of Crave series “Sweet Vengeance” releases January 2024

Beginning After The End (Part 1)
This is a story about how Agnarr and Iduna’s friends, particularly Thea, move on after their deaths. Thea is an OC from When All Is Lost, a series about Agnarr and Iduna that @the-spaztic-fantastic and I have written together. This story wouldn’t have happened at all without @the-spaztic-fantastic contributing generously with ideas and edits and brainstorming sessions and the need to see Thea having a happy life after we killed off her husband in Into The Unknown (ok fine, that was mostly me but she was in total agreement it needed to happen!) Hubert first appears in The Color of Virtue which @the-spaztic-fantastic wrote for WAIL and I appreciate her letting me feature him in this story. I’ll post this in four parts over the next few days.
The stones rose up out of the ground and Princess Anna looked impossibly small against them, her hands clasped tightly and her head bowed in muted sorrow and reverence. Thea wished she had been as composed during the service for Elias a year ago instead of sobbing throughout, Sasha and Vadik clinging to her in a way she didn’t know a seventeen-year-old and a nine-year-old could cling.
Perhaps that was why Queen Elsa hadn’t come. Perhaps she too had been unable to stop her outward displays of grief and mourning that would have been too devastating for Arendelle’s citizens to witness from their teenaged monarch. Or perhaps it was now deemed too dangerous for the remaining members of the royal family to be in the same place. There had been a few assassination attempts over the years and rumors of ill health were always rampant. Especially this past winter which had taken so many in a sweating sickness including the elder Calders. Elias’ parents had both gasped his name as they died.
Too many gone.
Thea watched as the priest put a hand on Anna’s shoulder and said “Have courage.” Anna nodded, eyes downcast and Thea wished she had the energy to go tell her to have whatever she wanted: anger, fear, sadness, nothing. But when she took Anna’s hand in the receiving line, she knew it was something else she needed to say and she tried to hug Anna the way Iduna always had, both arms tight around her waist and head tucked against Anna’s.
“They loved you very much,” Thea whispered, only loud enough for Anna to hear, and then tightened the hug when she felt Anna’s breath hitch at her words. Thea made soothing sounds against Anna’s ear like she did for little Elias, like she did sometimes even for her older children who wouldn’t ask for it, but whose bodies relaxed at the noise when she tucked them back under covers after troublesome dreams. “They were very proud of you, and I am too.”
***
Thea dried her eyes with a handkerchief and linked her arm through Sasha’s as they left the service.
“It was longer than Father’s service. But not so long as Grandmother’s and Grandfather’s,” Vadik said as he reached for Thea’s free hand. Her heart seized at the thought that her ten-year-old son had been to enough funeral services in the past year to compare them.
“The music was beautiful. King Agnarr would have loved the violins,” Sasha said, sparing Thea the need to respond. “I bet the baby would have liked listening to the choir.”
Vadik giggled. “He would have tried to sing though. And clap.”
“If he did, Queen Iduna would have liked that better than any instrument,” Thea said and smiled in spite of the sadness. Little Elias did that for her, for them all. Delighting in his arrival and his first smile, first words, first steps; he pulled them all out of the pit of grief they so often found themselves in.
“Still, it’s best he’s home with the nursemaid. Cook has probably already fed him lunch. Should we -” Thea stopped and watched in confusion as Sasha dropped her arm and pulled away, walking with urgency towards a man still facing the stone pillars.
“Uncle Hubert! Uncle Hubert!”
Sasha pulled on his elbow and the man turned to her, smiling while wiping at his eyes and at his neatly trimmed beard and Thea saw that it was indeed Hubert. Hubert, who had grown to be such a close friend that even after Elias’s death they had continued to exchange letters.
There was more white in his beard than the last time they had seen him, and perhaps less of it on his head, but he still had the same tall, trim build of his youth. Thea’s eyes were trained on his beard, wondering if Elias would have also been starting to have streaks of white appearing in his hair had he lived to bury his best friend instead of preceding him in death. Thea swallowed painfully, a feeling like panic and longing fighting in her chest.
Hubert hugged Sasha and then shook hands with Vadik, exclaiming over how much the children had grown since he had last been to Arendelle.
“If you think we’re big, you should come see little Elias! He’s the chubbiest baby you’ll ever see and Mother says he’ll be bigger than me soon!” Vadik said and then looked at Thea.
Sasha had linked arms with her mother again as Thea took a deep breath past her mounting emotions and smiled at Hubert. “It’s good to see you, Hubert.”
“It’s good to see you, Thea.” His smile was a pained one that surely mirrored her own.
***
“How long did you know him? The king?” Thea asked. They had switched to French, a more comfortable language for Hubert and one Thea was eager to speak in. Speaking it reminded her of days in a Parisian finishing school when she had less responsibility and more time to pursue her artistic accomplishments, and though she had taught the children, they were never as eager to leave the ease of their native tongue.
Vadik and baby Elias had gone to bed, Hubert helping out with stories of trains and lullabies. Sasha had given him another hug before bidding them both good night and retiring to her room. Thea half expected to come downstairs and see Elias and Iduna and Agnarr in the sitting room, to take up the evening amusements as they once had while vacationing together in the Royal Sommerhus so many years ago.
But of course, it was empty.
The servants had left some spirits on a tray by the fire for her and Hubert and she poured him a glass of akvavit before pouring some for herself. She settled in a chair by the fire and he did the same.
“I knew King Agnarr for over two decades. I met him when I was twenty, assisting with a trade negotiation. He was a few years younger, but already so serious and earnest in doing the best for his kingdom.” He swirled the liquid in his cup and sighed. “When did you first meet? Was it Iduna you knew first?”
Thea took a sip of her drink and smiled. This dance of grief - fond memories that were no less happy for being remembered when sad - was something she had learned in the past year. For a while she had tried to avoid even thinking of the happy moments, afraid she would tinge them with an irreparable sadness now that Elias was gone. But the children wanted to be told the same stories about their father again and again, and even her mother-in-law and father-in-law could only be soothed by memories when in their sick bed.
It was a fresh wound, a bright one, still stinging, to think of Agnarr and Iduna. To add them to the trove of treasured memories that were now of a limited quantity.
“I had the opposite impression when I first saw him. It must have been around that many years ago.”
“Oh?” Hubert looked surprised, but intrigued, and settled back into his chair in anticipation of her explanation.
“The day I arrived in Arendelle from finishing school was the day he and Iduna crashed into the fjord on that ridiculous velocipede. I thought my parents had made quite a poor decision in starting a business here, even though my father had claimed it was ripe for a print shop with the new King’s Academy growing the demand for books and printed materials.”
Hubert was smiling and it was enough encouragement for her to continue. He clearly liked remembering them too.
“I saw the commotion and thought it was just some school children having fun until the sailors and the fisherman started addressing this boy as king. And then he refused to get out of the water until Iduna was safely lifted out and someone had fetched her a blanket. I thought it scandalous that a young king would put a lady in a situation like that, at worst in danger of drowning, at best in danger of catching cold. And then to learn she was a commoner and they weren’t even courting...it was Elias who explained it to me later, what he was really like. But, no, it was not a good first impression.”
Hubert laughed now. “This was before their courtship then. I remember Agnarr being inept in that area of kingship.” He leaned forward, placing his drink back on the tray and putting his elbows on his knees. “Did you know I asked him about Iduna after his eighteenth birthday ball? I had a dance with her and was enchanted. And he and I got along well so I knew he could tell me if she already had a young man courting her. But he didn’t tell me of his feelings for her! Instead, he told me where I could find her at work! She let me down kindly.”
Thea put a hand to her chest and laughed. “I never heard that story!”
Hubert nodded with a small grin. “It’s true. The next time I came to Arendelle they were courting and Agnarr apologized for not speaking of his intentions to me earlier. I told him it was no matter, as long as he had apologized to her for not speaking of his intentions earlier!” Hubert leaned back again and sighed. “So wise in some ways, and then so like a child in others. I’m glad he got to have his own family before...this. Before his end.”
Thea took a drink and nodded. “They loved each other so. It’s a good legacy they leave, though too soon to do it.”
Hubert looked at her steadily, and she wasn’t sure what to read there. He reached for his glass again and clinked it to hers. “Elias as well.”
***
Thea showed Hubert to a guest room, insisting he stay with them instead of on his ship docked in the harbor. The inns were full of foreign dignitaries paying homage to the king and queen and the idea of sleeping on a boat after talking about three loved ones who died on one felt like too heavy of a thing to bear.
She walked through the narrow hallways of the house, checking on each child. Vadik had thrown the covers off so she tucked him in and kissed his head, glad he couldn’t roll his eyes at this sign of affection while asleep. Sasha had fallen asleep with a book on her chest and Thea smiled as she tucked a ribbon into the pages as a bookmark and set it on her bedside table. In the nursery, little Elias was sleeping on his stomach. He looked even rounder in sleep. She pressed a hand on his back and breathed with him, the calm of his steady breaths finally making her feel sleepy.
In her room, she undressed by herself. Her lady’s maid had gone to bed hours before once Thea had assured her she could manage. The woman had been yawning before Thea and Hubert tired of reminiscing, the comfort of shared stories and dear friends a balm on this difficult day. She closed her eyes as she stepped out of the mourning gown, longing for the feel of Elias’s hands slipping underneath her chemise and kissing her throat as he unbuttoned and unlaced. With her eyes closed and her head a little fuzzy and warm from the akvavit, she could almost feel his breath on her neck and his hands at her waist, warm and eager on her skin.
She discarded the dress and hoped it would be a long time before she needed it again. As she pulled her own covers tight against her body, she began her regular nighttime ritual. Reaching for the memories she wanted to play across her mind until she surrendered to sleep, she thought about how Elias had explained the king’s behavior to her. It had been at the same ball Hubert spoke of, held in honor of Agnarr’s eighteenth birthday.
By then, Arendelle had weathered an outbreak of Rock Pox and fared far better than its neighbors. Thea had been impressed by the quick response of the crown to procure medicines and supplies for everyone in need, to compensate affected businesses, and to recognize Iduna with a medal and a council seat for her contributions to the quick containment of the illness.
She tucked her hands under her cheek and thought of the dress she wore the night of the ball. It was a brilliant green, the finest silk she had ever worn and one her parents were proud to be able to afford with their earnings from the print shop, now successful and producing more content than they had hoped. A footman had presented her and all of the other ladies from Arendelle with golden pins in the shape of wheat and she had held it in her gloved hand. Foreign princesses had already affixed crocus pins to their dresses, the more daring ones placing them very close to generous displays of decolletage.
It was the second time she had seen Elias.
The first time was that day at the dock, when the king and Iduna were treading water in the fjord. Thea had gaped at them from the deck of the French ship delivering her to her new home. What was this place? Where people watched as a king almost killed himself and a young lady? In the chaos, Thea remembered seeing a tall, dark-skinned young man and a shorter, light-skinned and more compact young man clapping each other on the back as they pointed to the king amidst fits of laughter. The taller one caught her eye, winked, and smiled. It had been a handsome smile. Wide and easy. She had turned her head, blushing.
And then she saw him again at the ball.
He bowed to her and asked her to dance and she shoved the pin into her reticule so she could take his hand.
When the music started, he steered them effortlessly and she followed him, grateful that he was a better partner than the clumsy boy she’d been assigned in finishing school.
“You’re that girl. I saw you the day the king fell in the water. I wondered if you had sailed right back out of Arendelle after that.”
She was a little breathless from the dancing, even though they had just begun. “I was arriving that day, sir, not departing. My family set up our print shop in Market Square. I’ve been busy helping them arrange business.”
“Oh, the Jorgens! Yes I believe my father knows yours. He’s the trade minister. Always needing duplicates made of various agreements. I’m Elias Calder. Welcome to Arendelle.”
She smiled and didn’t speak, concentrating on the steps, on the muscles she could feel coiled beneath her hand, on his smile, so winsome and open.
“You’re not like the other girls.” He said, suddenly.
She hmmphed and turned her head so she looked over his shoulder as they continued the steps of the dance.
“Is that rude? I’m sorry. I meant to pay a compliment.” His eyes were amused even though his apology sounded sincere and it elicited a flare of irritation in her chest.
“Either you meant to insult my sex generally or me personally. I'm not sure which is worse but either way it makes you a rude clout.”
“I’m sorry.” The amusement in his eyes had vanished, replaced with genuine worry. “I just meant - every other woman here is falling over themselves to get on Agnarr’s dance card, to show their appreciation for his gift, to wish him a happy birthday. But you’re not.”
She gave a small smile. It was an acknowledgement that he had been watching her and she recognized it for the compliment it was.
“I don’t want the pin to ruin my dress. And,” she leaned in closer to his ear and whispered. “I’m not sure the king is worth all that trouble.” She had meant to avoid her voice carrying, but the closeness brought a thrill that had nothing to do with fear of being overheard.
Elias looked puzzled as she pulled away from his ear and they continued the movements of the dance. “No?”
She shook her head, pleased her curls might be shown to good effect. She hoped he was watching. He was very handsome. And light on his feet. And if he winked at her again she might not turn away.
“He seems a very inconsiderate man to drag a woman on an adventure that ends with her in wet clothes in public. Does he not have high regard for his citizens? Does he think women not born of royalty don’t merit the same kind of attention and consideration as those you’d find in court? Or is he ignorant?”
Elias smiled at her. “I’ll tell you a secret.” He leaned towards her ear, whispering, and she could feel every one of the fine hairs on her neck as he did. “Agnarr is madly in love with her and we all have a bet going of when he'll finally realize it, summon his courage and ask her permission to court her."
"He wouldn't ask her father?" Thea had asked, hoping he would remember this hint for how to court a woman.
"Oh, um, Iddy - Iduna is an orphan too. We think it's part of why they get on so well. Mutual understanding of unspoken things and all that."
Thea nodded, considering this new information.
“When she moved to Arendelle from the orphanage, he welcomed her to town with a golden mortar and pestle.”
“Gold?” Thea laughed at the absurdity. “For a mortar and pestle?”
“So you’re right that he is ignorant in certain matters. But I think he genuinely loves her. He’s certainly devoted. There’s nothing untoward in his attentions.”
The dance ended and Thea watched as Agnarr walked back into the ballroom from the balcony, Iduna a few paces behind and clutching at a necklace.
Elias walked her over to the refreshments and ladled a cup of punch before bowing to her again. “I promised my sister a dance. But I hope to find you again soon, Miss. Jorgen. And perhaps you’ll let me learn your first name, as well as the proper way to court a lady in the French fashion.”
He winked and was off through the crowd and two decades on, Thea clutched at her pillow and hoped sleep would come before the tears.

Research VICTOR VASARELY
evasively was born in Pecks and grew up in Postmen (now Pisani, Slovakia) and Budapest, where, in 1925, he took up medical studies at Eotvos Loran University.
In 1927, he abandoned medicine to learn traditional academic painting at the private Pasolini-Volkmann Academy. In 1928/1929, he enrolled at Sandor Bortnick’s private art school called Muhly (lit. "Workshop", in existence until 1938), then widely recognized as Budapest's center of Bauhaus studies.
Cash-strapped, the muhly could not offer all that the Bauhaus offered. Instead, it concentrated on applied graphic art and typographical design.
In 1929, he painted his Blue Study and Green Study.
In 1930, he married his fellow student Claire Spinner (1908–1990).
Together they had two sons, Andre and Jean-Pierre.
Jean-Pierre was also an artist and used the professional name 'Viral'.
In Budapest, he worked for a ball-bearings company in accounting and designing advertising posters.
Vasa rely became a graphic designer and a poster artist during the 1930s combining patterns and organic images with each other.
Outdoor Vasarely artwork at the church of Palos in Pecks
Vasarely left Hungary and settled in Paris in 1930.
He worked as a graphic artist and as a creative consultant at the advertising agencies Havas, Draeger, and Defames (1930–1935).
His interactions with other artists during this time were limited.
He thought of opening an institution modelled after Sandor Bortnick’s muhly and developed some teaching material for it.
Having lived mostly in cheap hotels, he settled in 1942/1944 in Saint-Care in the Lot department. After the Second World War, he opened an atelier in Arcelia, a suburb about 10 kilometers from the center of Paris (in the Val-de-Marne department of the Île-de-France).
In 1961, he finally settled in Anent-sur-Marne (in the Seine-et-Marne department).
Vasarely eventually went on to produce art and sculpture using optical illusion.
Over the next three decades, Vasarely developed his style of geometric abstract art, working in various materials but using a minimal number of forms and colors:
1929–1944: Early graphics: Vasarely experimented with textural effects, perspective, shadow and light.
His early graphic period resulted in works such as Zebras (1937), Chess Board (1935), and Girl-power (1934).
1944–1947: Les Fusses Routes – On the wrong track: During this period, Vasarely experimented with cubistic, futuristic, expressionistic, symbolistic and surrealistic paintings without developing a unique style.
Afterwards, he said he was on the wrong track.
He exhibited his works in the gallery of Denise René (1946) and the gallery René Bertheau (1947).
Writing the introduction to the catalogue, Jacques Prévert placed Vasarely among the surrealists.
Prévert creates the term imaginaries (images + noir, black) to describe the paintings.
Self Portrait (1941) and The Blind Man (1946) are associated with this period.
1947–1951: Developing geometric abstract art (optical art): Finally, Vasarely found his own style.
The overlapping developments are named after their geographical heritage.
Defer refers to the works influenced by the white tiled walls of the Paris Defer – Rocher au metro station.
Ellipsoid pebbles and shells found during a vacation in 1947 at the Breton coast at Belle Île inspired him to the Belles-Isles works.
Since 1948, Vasarely usually spent his summer months in Gourdes in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
There, the cubic houses led him to the composition of the group of works labelled Gourdes/Cristal.
He worked on the problem of empty and filled spaces on a flat surface as well as the stereoscopic view.
Tribute to Malevich (1954), Ciudad Universitario de Caracas
1951–1955: Kinetic images, black-white photography’s: From his Gourdes works he developed his kinematic images, superimposed acrylic glass panes create dynamic, moving impressions depending on the viewpoint.
In the black-white period he combined the frames into a single pane by transposing photography’s in two colors.
Tribute to Malevich, a ceramic wall picture of 100 m2 (1,100 sq ft) adorns the University of Caracas, Venezuela which he co-designed in 1954 with the architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva, is a major work of this period.
Kinetic art flourished and works by Vasarely, Calder, Duchamp, Man Ray, Soto, Tonguely were exhibited at the Denise René gallery under the title Le Movement (the motion).
Vasarely published his Yellow Manifest.
Building on the research of constructivist and Bauhaus pioneers, he postulated that visual kinetics (plastique cinétique) relied on the perception of the viewer who is considered the sole creator, playing with optical illusions.
Supernovae (1959–61) in Tate Modern
1955–1965: Folklore planetaries, permutations, and serial art: On 2 March 1959, Vasarely patented his method of unites plastique’s.
Permutations of geometric forms are cut out of a colored square and rearranged.
He worked with a strictly defined palette of colors and forms (three reds, three greens, three blues, two violets, two yellows, black, white, gray; three circles, two squares, two rhomboids, two long rectangles, one triangle, two dissected circles, six ellipses) which he later enlarged and numbered.
Out of this plastic alphabet, he started serial art, an endless permutation of forms and colors worked out by his assistants.
(The creative process is produced by standardized tools and impersonal actors which questions the uniqueness of a work of art.)
In 1963, Vasarely presented his palette to the public under the name of Folklore planetaries.
1965–: Homage à hexagon, Vega: The Tribute to the hexagon series consists of endless transformations of indentations and relief adding color variations, creating a perpetual mobile of optical illusion.
In 1965 Vasarely was included in the Museum of Modern Art exhibition The Responsive Eye, created under the direction of William C. Seitz.
His Vega series plays with spherical swelling grids creating an optical illusion of volume.
Kedzie-Ga, 1970, Screen-print in colors, Edition of 250, 50.8 cm × 50.8 cm (20.0 in × 20.0 in)
In October 1967, designer Will Burton invited Vasarely to make a presentation to Burton’s Vision '67 conference, held at New York University.
On 5 June 1970, Vasarely opened his first dedicated museum with over 500 works in a renaissance palace in Gourdes (closed in 1996).
A second major undertaking was the Foundation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence, a museum housed in a distinct structure specially designed by Vasarely.
It was inaugurated in 1976 by French president Georges Pompidou, two years after his death.
Sadly, the museum is now in a state of disrepair, several of the pieces on display have been damaged by water leaking from the ceiling.
Also, in 1976 his large kinematic object Georges Pompidou was installed in the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Vasarely Museum located at his birthplace in Pecks, Hungary, was established with a large donation of works by Vasarely.
In the same decade, he took a stab at industrial design with a 500-piece run of the upscale Suomi tableware by Timo Sarajevan that Vasarely decorated for the German Rosenthal porcelain maker's Studio Linnie.
In 1982, 154 specially created serigraphs were taken into space by the cosmonaut Jean-Loup Chrétien on board the French-Soviet spacecraft Salyut 7 and later sold for the benefit of UNESCO.
In 1987, the second Hungarian Vasarely museum was established in Zach Palace in Budapest with more than 400 works.
He died age 90 in Paris on 15 March 1997.
A new Vasarely exhibit was mounted in Paris at Muse end Herbed in 2012.
In 2019, a temporary exhibition of Vasarely's work entitled Le Partage des Forms was displayed in the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
1970–1996: Vasarely Museum in the Saint-Firmin Palace in Gourdes, Vaucluse, France (closed in 1996)
1976: Foundation Vasarely, Aix-en-Provence, France
1976: Vasarely Museum, Pecks, Hungary
1987: Vasarely Museum, Zach Palace, Buda, Budapest, Hungary

CANTLON: OFF-SEASON HOCKEY VOLUME 11
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - The 2021-2022 hockey season is inching closer with each passing moment, and more and more activity is happening as teams look to complete their rosters. The AHL released the playoff format for this coming season, and 23 of the 31 teams will make the chase for the Calder Cup. Making the playoffs until recently was the benefit to a team's and a player's hard work. Now, it's being handed out to just about everyone. Also, the three-game playoff series makes its return allowing for more playoff revenue by trying to attract the marginal hockey fan but at the same time further dilutes the AHL product and makes the regular season meaningless. Read more about it HERE. RANGERS AND WOLF PACK NEWS The Hartford Wolf Pack search for a new assistant coach to replace Gord Murphy, elevated to the New York Rangers staff as an assistant to new coach Gerard Gallant last month, has been sourced and selected. However, an announcement should be coming shortly, according to head coach Kris Knoblauch. He declined to name the chosen candidate. Meanwhile, up in the Big Apple, the Rangers announced the hiring of John Lilly as the new Director of Amateur Scouting and Player Development. Lilley went to Boston University for a season-and-a-half in the early 1990s. He played in the NHL and spent the last 14 years in the same role with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Lilley, a Massachusetts native, played on the 1994 US Olympic Team with current Rangers President/GM and Wolf Pack GM, Chris Drury’s older brother, ex-Hartford Whaler, Ted Drury. How this hire affects Jed Ortmeyer and Tanner Glass remains to be seen in the new organizational scheme. Forwards Tim Gettinger, Ty Ronning, and goaltender Adam Huska all received new contracts. The trio each get one-year, two-way deals. Huska will make $750K in the NHL and $80K for his season in the AHL. Gettinger and Ronning will earn the same $750K as Huska in the NHL but will get $75K in the AHL. Ex-Wolf Pack Sean Day re-signs with the Tampa Bay Lightning on a one-year, two-way deal at $750K for playing in the NHL and $100K to play in the AHL. The Rangers' new Double AA affiliate, the Jacksonville Icemen (ECHL), lost their head coach, Jason Christie. He is no on the Buffalo Sabres' coaching staff as an Assistant Coach. Christie is the only coach in the team's franchise history and is the all-time winningest coach in ECHL history. Jacksonville team president, former CT Whale front office executive Bob Ohrablo, said a search for a new bench boss has begun. According to various reports, a new coach should be announced in about three weeks. MOVEMENT Six more AHL’ers are packing for Europe with their training camps starting in the next two weeks. Ben Street leaves the Binghamton Senators and signs with EHC Munich (Germany-DEL). Adam Mascherin departs the Texas Stars for Skellefteå AIK (Sweden-SHL). Theodor Lennestrom no longer flies with the Bakersfield Condors. He will join the Torpedo Novgorod (Russia-KHL). Skyler McKenzie of the Manitoba Moose signs with Västerviks IK (Sweden-Allsvenskan). Nathanael Halbert who played two games for the Laval Rocket goes to the Coventry Blaze (England-EIHL) and Keegan Kanzig, who played eight games for the San Diego Gulls, heads to EC Salzburg (Austria-IceHL). That makes 63 total players heading overseas. Six are off to Austria, while eleven go to Germany, which is second to Russia at 17, and nine go to Sweden. Former QU Bobcat Chase Priskie signs a one-year, two-way deal with the Florida Panthers. He'll earn $750K in the NHL and$70K for play in the AHL. Greg Printz (Selects Academy at South Kent Prep) signs the same deal with San Diego, and ex-Bridgeport Sound Tiger, Mason Jobst, signs an AHL deal with the Rochester Americans. KOWALSKY JOINS BRIDGEPORT ISLANDERS The New York Islanders have named Rick Kowalsky the new assistant coach for the AHL’s Bridgeport Islanders and their tenured head coach, ex-Wolf Pack, Brent Thompson (Milford). Kowalsky had been with the New Jersey Devils coaching staff the past three seasons, following eight years as head coach of the Devils’ AHL affiliates in Albany and Binghamton. He guided the AHL Devils to three Calder Cup Playoff appearances in 2014, 2016, and 2017. In 2015-16, Kowalsky earned the Louis A.R. Pieri Award as the AHL’s outstanding coach. He replaces the assistant coach of the last ten years, Eric Boguniecki (West Haven/Gunnery Prep-Westminster Prep). Boguniecki played for Bridgeport. Matt Carkner was the assistant for five years. Kowalsky served four seasons as Head Coach of New Jersey’s ECHL affiliate, the Trenton Devils and Trenton Titans. He received the 2009 John Brophy Award as the league's top coach. The Simcoe, ON native, was inducted into the ECHL Hall of Fame in January 2017. The Bridgeport Islanders signed their first minor league free agent. He is the sharp-shooting, swift-skating Chris Terry, who comes back from Torpedo Novgorod (Russia-KHL). He has 552 career AHL points under his belt and led the AHL in scoring with 71 points in 2017-18 in Laval’s first season at Place Bell. In addition, the Islanders re-signed five other players from last year’s squad. They include; Jeff Kubiak, Erik Brown, Felix Bibeau, Cole Coskey, and Kyle MacLean. DINEEN IN THE NEWS Former Whalers great Kevin Dineen was named the new head coach for the Utica Comets, now the New Jersey Devils affiliate. Dinneen’s contract wasn’t renewed by the Anaheim Ducks in San Diego, coaching the Gulls. The irony is that Utica is now the new ECHL affiliate of the Adirondack Thunder. Dineen played for the Binghamton Whalers for half a season. The Dineen family has been a part of Glens Falls AHL hockey and upstate New York hockey history. As a head coach, Bill Dineen, Kevin's father, won two Calder Cups in seven years with the Adirondack Red Wings, the second coming over the New Haven Nighthawks. He was the last WHA New England Whalers head coach and a scout for two years for the NHL Whalers. Gord Dineen, Kevin's brother, coached in Rochester and was a volunteer assistant at D3 Hobart College last year. A pair of ex-Nighthawks, Peter and Shawn Dineen, played in Adirondack, and Kevin's brother Jerry was the Rangers video coach for 17 years. He was let go this summer. In his playing days, he played at SUNY-Plattsburgh, a Division III school. MORE MOVEMENT Larry Pleau, the New England Whalers (WHA) great and a one-time Hartford Whalers head coach, was also a Rangers assistant GM/Director of Player Personnel in the mid-1990s and a senior advisor to the St. Louis Blues for the last 23 years, becomes a 76-year-old “free agent” and takes a job as the new senior advisor for the Arizona Coyotes. Former Rangers head coach and New Haven Nighthawks assistant coach John Tortorella signs to be a part of ESPN's new NHL coverage team as an in-studio analyst. Ex-Wolf Pack captain/Sound Tiger Greg Moore, the current head coach with the Toronto Marlies, has added a new assistant coach, in former head coach from the Newfoundland Growlers (ECHL), John Snowden. This leaves Newfoundland-native and current resident, former New Haven Nighthawk, and Rangers assistant coach Darryl Williams, the team's assistant coach, as the only staff member left. The new AHL coaching parade sees long-time AHL assistant for eight teams, Scott Allen, named the Hershey Bears' new head coach. The Iowa Wild names Nate Dicasmirro and Nolan Yonkman as the team’s new assistant coaches. Andy Chiodo was hired as the goalie coach for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. AND THE CHANGES KEEP POURING IN Former Ranger Rick St. Croix, the father of two ex-Wolf Pack in Chris and Michael St. Croix, retired from the Manitoba Moose. The Moose is also in the news for hiring recently retired goalie Drew MacIntyre as the new goaltending coach and scout. He finished his career last season, winning the Japanese Hockey title with the Oji Eagles. Ex-Pack and Ranger Gordie Dwyer was hired as the new head coach of the Saint John Seadogs (QMJHL). Ex-Wolf Pack Dave MacIsaac comes back to Danbury for the third time. He was named the new head coach of Danbury Hat Tricks (FPHL). He played for the infamous UHL Trashers from 2004-2006 and was head coach of the Danbury Mad Hatters (EPHL) in 2008-09. He has coached in Louisiana (ECHL), Björninn in Iceland for two years, and was the GM of St. Jerome (LNAH). His assistant coach Adam Blanchette (Berlin/CT Clippers-MetJHL/Danbury Titans-FPHL), was hired last week. Hamden’s Mike Lee (Gunnery/Sacred Heart University) re-signs with the Indy Fuel (ECHL). Former UCONN captain Miles Gendron signs a one-year AHL two-way deal (AHL-ECHL) with the Colorado Eagles-AHL/Utah Grizzlies-ECHL for the 21-22 season. Ex-CT Whale Mike Pelech, who split last season between the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL) and Indy (ECHL), signed a one-year deal with the Atlanta Gladiators (ECHL) for the 2021-22 season. Ex-Sound Tiger Justin Taylor returns to the Kalamazoo Wings (ECHL) after playing last season for the Tulsa Oilers (ECHL). Nick Hutchison (Avon Old Farms) goes from Indy (ECHL) to Adirondack (ECHL). AND THE SIGNING JUST KEEP COMING Greg Harney (East Haven/ND-WH) signs with Port Huron (MI) Prowlers (FPHL) after playing for four years at Framingham State (MASCAC). Ex-Pack Eric Selleck will play Canadian senior hockey for Gananoque Islanders (EOSHL) Eastern Ontario Senior Hockey League. Ex-Sound Tiger David Quenneville leaves the Rapid City Rush (ECHL) for IK Oskarshmamn (Sweden-AHL). Former Whaler/Ranger Dave Barr leaves the Canada U-18 hockey program and becomes the head coach with the Vienna Capitals (Austria-IceHL). Brandon Whistle, the nephew of former Nighthawk Rob Whistle, returns to play after a year off with the Leeds Knights (England-NIHL), whose Head Coach/GM is his father, David. Brother Jackson is playing for Belfast (Northern Ireland-EIHL) this season. UCONN hockey released their full 2021-22 schedule. The first two games will be at home at the XL Center on October 2nd against Sacred Heart University (AHA), a non-conference matchup. The school's first Hockey East contest is October 8th against Boston University. Read more HERE. Jason Fortier, a long-time Junior-A coach who was head coach/GM of the Odessa (TX) Jackalopes (NAHL) last year, was named the new assistant coach with the University Maine Black Bears (HE), replacing ex-Sound Tiger Ben Guité. Guité was named the new head coach of the ECHL Maine Mariners as Riley Armstrong is heading to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms to be an assistant coach. Guide’s, father Pierre, played in all seven years of the WHA. Ex-Wolf Pack Daniel Paille was upgraded from a volunteer assistant coach to a full-time assistant coach with Canisius College Golden Griffins (AHA). MORE SIGNINGS? J.D. Greenway completed his four years at Maine after transferring from Wisconsin. He signs with the Providence Bruins. After four years at Denver University (NCHC), Jack Doremus signs with the Tulsa Oilers (ECHL), and Quin Foreman Dartmouth College (ECACHL) signs with Indy (ECHL). These signings make 26 players from Hockey East schools who signed a pro deal and 16 from the NCHC. The breakdown for the other conferences is; Big 10 has 21, AHA and ECACHL seven each, WCHA (CCHA) four, and Division I Independent Arizona State two. Ludwig Stenlund of Niagara University (AHA) heads home to play for HC Vita Hasten (Sweden-Allenesque). Ashton Stockier from Mercyhurst University (AHA) and Division III Adrian College's (NCHA) Mike Finger are both going to HCB Ticino (Switzerland-LNB). Now 82 college players have signed in North America, 33 in Europe. 118 total college players from Division I and Division III are signed to pro deals in Europe and North America. 34 underclassmen have left school early. TRANSFERS 10 more college transfers for a hectic college hockey off-season. Grant Hebert transfers from the Robert Morris University (AHA) program canceled to the University of Maine (HE). RICHTERS MAKING MOVES William “Beanie” Richter, the youngest son of former Ranger goalie great Mike Richter of Greenwich, has committed to New Haven's Yale University (ECACHL) for 2023-24. The 16-year-old is currently enrolled in Brunswick School in Greenwich. Last year, Richter played just one game with the Penticton Vees (BCHL). He was also a 2020 QMJHL US Draftee by the Cape Breton (Nova Scotia) Eagles. About The Book: Title: BLOODFIRE ACADEMY(Cursed Magic #1) Author: Alexis Calder Pub. Date: August 24, 2020 Publisher: Alexis Calder Formats: Paperback, eBook Pages: 206 Find it: Goodreads, Amazon, Kindle Read For Free With A Kindle Unlimited Membership!
Book Summary: “When things go sideways, what a girl really needs by her side is a sexy wolf shifter, a steamy incubus, and a smoldering mage. Prove me wrong.
Everyone has heard of Bloodfire Academy. It’s an elite school that takes the best of the best in the supernatural world. The students at Bloodfire are the children of members of a secret order. Think Illuminati but for the magical world. But even more powerful.
Membership is inherited and it turns out my late mother was one of them. Who knew? Up until now, magic hasn’t really been my thing. But a girl can fake it, am I right?
There’s no faking it when I meet the sexy wolf shifter, steamy incubus, and smoldering mage. Seriously, this semester is going to be hot.
Then the attacks start. I thought I could figure out the magic part, but nobody said anything about monsters. Turns out Bloodfire Academy is more about survival than GPA.
Publisher’s Note: Cursed Magic is a full length, steamy, new adult paranormal academy romance where the heroine doesn't have to choose. This is book one of three in the Bloodfire Academy series.”
Excerpt: I shake myself from the thoughts and look up at the handsome man who wants to spend time with me. So far, what I know about Ethan is that he’s sweet and that he has a sister he loves, and he’s not old fashioned with the rules between the supernatural races.
That and he’s sexy as hell.
“Yes,” I say as I slide my arm through his. “Let’s go eat.”
He pulls me a little closer and the two of us walk arm in arm down the hallway. Being this close to him sends shivers down my spine. He smells clean, like soap mixed with something else. I’m not sure what it is, but it’s my new favorite scent. When we arrive in the cafeteria, he releases my arm so we can grab some snacks. I’m surprised how much I want to grab hold of him and feel his touch on me again. There’s a part of me that wants to press back into him, but I resist. Where breakfast had been set up there’s now a spread of fresh fruit, granola bars, and various snack foods. I had no idea they kept this stocked round the clock.
I grab an apple and a packet of almonds. Ethan has a plate full of food again. We find a seat in the nearly empty cafeteria and eat and talk for almost two hours.
Conversation with Ethan is effortless and I’m sad when it’s time to head to our next class.
“We should do this again,” he says as we clean up.
“Yes, please,” I say. I don’t say all the other things I want to do to him. Ethan is officially the best part of Bloodfire Academy. Who cares if there’s a lunatic mage girl who wants to destroy me?
The hottest shifter in school wants to spend more time with me. Which means, I definitely have to survive the sparring thing tonight.
About The Author:
Alexis Calder writes sassy heroines and sexy heroes with a sprinkle of sarcasm. She lives in the Rockies and drinks far too much coffee and just the right amount of wine.
