Église San José de Cachi, Argentina: Cachi is a charming little town with homes and buildings built of adobe and lies just above the Rio Calchaqui with views of the snow capped mountains in the distance. In the tranquil Central Plaza there is a Spanish colonial church, Iglesia San José, a National Historical Monument and a small but very good archaeological museum, Museo Arqueológico de Cachi Pío Pablo Díaz. Nice place to take a stroll ...stop by a café for a coffee and enjoy the fresh air... Cachi is a small city in Salta Province Argentina. It is the capital of the Cachi Department. Wikipedia

Cachi to Cafayate
Today, we drove from the small town of Cachi to Cafayate, which appears to be a center of wine production.
Before we headed out, we stopped at the local museum, which was unexpectedly closed. So we stopped in a local shop which had lots of local crafts, which we are suckers for. Since we are trying to avoid bringing a lot of stuff home, we can always say my sister Barb would like that!
Then we headed south. Cafayate is 160km (100 miles) south of Cachi, and the Google estimate is 4 hours. This seemed generous, but given the condition of the road and the scenery, it was actually low for us. We were over 5 hours.
The road is almost entirely unpaved. It's not dirt or gravel; it is just graded into the area's rocky soil. It's also extremely winding and of varying widths, from ~30 feet wide to 10. For most of the route, 40km/hr was fast; in some areas, it was much slower.
But the scenery was varied and impressive. The only problem was finding a place to stop and take a photo. The best scenery was where the road was one lane wide and on a blind curve.
The whole route follows the Calchaqui River valley, so the overall grades were moderate. But there were times when, on the crest of a hill, we could see nothing of the road ahead.
The river bottom is green and lush, completely contrasting with the surrounding terrain.
The cacti were starting to bloom and we saw masses of them.
At the start of the trip, the cardon cacti filled the hillsides.
A common house plan was a long building with a porch on the front and only one room deep. We saw these still in use and abandoned.
Mountains were on both sides of the river, but the ones across the river were most visible.
The road might be in the rover bottoms but more often on the hillsides above. That meant that it often was on the steep side of the hill.
As we headed further south, vertical sandstone outcroppings became more frequent.
Across the river, the mountains became composed of twisted and deformed layers.
Then, we crossed the river and headed into those layers.
The rock was tilted at severe angles, creating an amazing landscape we wound through.
Luckily, there was little traffic, and we could stop briefly for photos. But we still needed to avoid blind spots by checking the rearview mirror before stopping.
It was really a fantastic drive!
The bridges were also one lane! One even had wood planking! This is on a national highway.
The varying contortions of the stone were continuing surprises.
At last, we hit pavement and vineyards and knew we were close to Cafayate.
For the next four nights, we are staying in a beautiful hotel surrounded by grapevines. We will take day trips, visit local vineyards, and relax.

Calchaquí can be seen andando en patas most of the day, not only in the bureau, but everywhere in general. If he gets surprised by the battle, he will run barefoot because no nail or glass can stand in his way.
