It was hard. Fighting a feeling so demanding, yet they knew just how exhausting it would be to give in.

Either way, it was tiring.

For once it wasn't pretending to be others, playing along in a game Vio could care less about.

Yet instead, it was the hellish war they never win. Even as the others came by, knocking on the locked shut door, voicing concerns of whether it was gonna eat, sleep, needed something, was okay.

It wasn't that either. Maybe food was always a struggle, maybe it was really hard to eat more than a single bite some days, but everyone was used to that. They were all patient, and respecting of the struggles, yet this was somethint ze wouldn't voice concerns about.

Something that ate, and nagged at Vio in the worst ways. Always taking advantage when he lay alone, or just, was alone. When it was vulnerable, the voice always crawled deep inside their fucked up head. Pleading for ze to listen.

Yet they always fell for it, they always caved in, and listened.

The first time they were caught, late at night, when Shadow walked in. Shadow instantly panicked. Someone he was going to betray, someone who thought the world of their only ‘friend’ who was going to get stabbed in the back and killed later on…. Someone who shouldn’t have cared, cared more than believable.

For the longest time, since that one mistake of being caught, Shadow’s been the only one who knows. Who recognizes, even after the rough patches, and betrayal, and months it took for them to have even a sliver of trust again after the revival, knows a bit about what Vio’s fucked up thoughts lead to.

Which is almost funny, someone who shouldn't have trusted ze again, is the only person who knows just how pathetically vulnerable they can be.

Vio always found it stupid, how pathetic they could be to fall for something so illogical, until the voices got stronger. Until it finally opened its eyes to the truth.

They deserve this.

The knife is right there…

So close-

So tempting—

Just enough to make them bleed!

Just this once-!

Just—

The knife ze didn't even realize they were holding clattered to the ground before them.

Shadow’s arms, now wrapped around him from behind- behind him? Shadow…? They didn't even realize the familiar sound of it teleporting in, or the presence of magic they carry, or the way he-

“No Vio. Not this time.”

His voice is commanding, yet soaked in a pit of worry.

Except, Vio listened this time.

Ze doesn't deserve to bleed, and if they cant trust themselves-

They can trust their friend. They can trust Shadow.

Ze will fight those thoughts tonight.

Tonight, for the first time, maybe they weren't able to do it alone, yet they win. This once.

They win the battle.

Because they don’t. They don't deserve to bleed.

They are worth so much more than what its own thoughts have tried to downgrade them too.

So much more.

Shadow was alive.

It was alive, and that fact made Vio feel sick.

Shouldn’t they be happy about that? Red sure was, brightening up with joy when Shadow returned from the dead, dripping with shadows and light shining through the still healing cracks running across its body. Vio had felt the flipping feeling then, but, once they recovered from the spontaneous split that had occurred as soon as Shadow appeared, distracted themself analyzing Red’s out of character reaction.

They came to the conclusion that, just as the knowledge of the others’ adventures had rubbed off on Vio when they recombined, Vio’s emotions must’ve rubbed off on Red and something similar must’ve occurred with Blue and Green.

However, after Vio came to that conclusion they had nothing else to ruminate on, other than their own reaction to Shadow. They couldn’t even ponder Shadow coming back to life, as Shadow itself explained that it wouldn’t die till Link did and simply had to build up enough magic to manifest itself again. That had also explained Vio’s other problem he was trying to figure out for the past few months, which was why Link’s magic levels were unusually low in that time.

They tried to read, but they couldn’t focus. Shadow was alive, and Vio wasn’t spending time with it. Even Blue managed to spend more time with Shadow than they did, but it was mostly just her being protective over Red and Green.

Vio wanted to ask Shadow so many questions, to take it to get extra magic from Zelda to help it recover faster, maybe even to just sit next to it. But they just… couldn’t. It looked so happy with everyone else, building new relationships instead of trying to fix a broken one. They still remember Shadow’s expression whenever it discovered Vio had never been its friend. That moment had haunted Vio’s nights for weeks.

…Well, they know why they felt sick, now. Red was the one that was supposed to be feeling things, not Vio.

Vio sat in the guilt that oozed from their pores, watching Green and Red laugh as Shadow teased Blue. They will never get to have that. They don’t deserve it.

Había sido hombre de poderes y misterios, era cosa de no creer. Su mirada abría o cerraba heridas y despertaba o desmayaba bichos y cristianos. En un clavar de ojos dejaba bobos al potro más bravío y al toro más toro.

Ventura, el vaquero andante de Minas Gerais, pasaba como viento. Tenía muchos rumbos y muchas mujeres y casa ninguna.

Se le conoció un solo amigo, que los dos fueron tientos del mismo lazo.

Deambulaban por el secarral. Llevaban varios días sin probar bocado. Defendiendo alguna causa perdida, se habían quedado sin caballo y sin rumbo. Nada para comer: lagartijas, espinas, arbustos sin fruto ni sombra. Ventura tenía costumbre, pero su amigo no daba más. Y cuando el amigo se tendió a morir en aquellas soledades, Ventura se hizo tigre para salvarlo del hambre. Antes de entigrarse, entregó al amigo una hoja azul, con puntas de estrella, que no era hoja de árbol conocido, y le dijo:

—Cuando vuelva, me pondrás esta hoja sobre la lengua.

Y le dijo que no había otra manera de desentigrarse.

Se fue lejos, pasó la noche cazando.

Regresó al alba, con la primera luz blanca, cargando un venado sobre el lomo. Cuando el amigo lo vio venir, cuando vio venir al tigre aquel con las fauces abiertas, huyó despavorido. El tigre lo miró correr. No lo persiguió.

Por donde él andaba, nada vivo quedaba. Partía las piedras, demolía los montes, desplomaba las barrancas. Echado entre los altos pastos, el tigre alzaba la cabeza y olía el viento y rugía su rabia triste; y nadie dormía.

Fue largo el acoso. Un ejército de buitres, que le seguía las huellas, delataba su paso al ejército de hombres que se lanzó tras él.

Y el cerco se fue cerrando, sudor de caballada, estrépito de avíos de guerra, trueno de voces y ladridos, hasta que una noche de luna el tigre pegó su último salto, en el aire alto, y bramó y cayó. Y ya estaba muerto de mucho balazo cuando el amigo de Ventura le hundió el caño del fusil en la boca y apretó el gatillo.

Muy lejos de allí, Ventura despertó. Despertó todo sucio de sangre seca y atormentado de dolores desde el sombrero hasta los pies.

Hasta respirar dolía. Caminar fue muy difícil, enorme sombra tambaleante, y recordar fue muy difícil. ¿Cuándo? ¿Dónde? ¿Quién? Luna alta, mala luna. Había caído la noche, dentro de él había caído la noche, y la noche ya no era la hora del amor ni de la guerra. Sus ojos habían perdido el habla, y sólo tenía oídos para las goteras de la muerte. Puta vida, vida sin fuego. ¿Sobreviviendo? Sobremuriendo. Quiera Dios soplar esta ceniza.

Blanco de polvo, negro de mugre, rojo de sangre, viene Ventura por el callejón. Pesado de dolores, arrastra los pies. Mal cargan las piernas este demolido cuerpo de gigante. Ventura atraviesa el mercado, sordo al clamor de las vivanderas, y pestañeando vislumbra, allá, al fin de todo, la cantina. La cal de la cantina brilla al pie de la cresta de dragón de los cerros, y más acá brillan de sudor los caballos atados a los palenques.

Bajo el portal, un ciego canta las noticias. La boca del ciego canta lo que han visto sus oídos, mientras una alcancía de lata va marcando el compás. El ciego canta las coplas del tigre del horror, maldición de estos campos, que ha muerto matando y que muchas muertes debía.

Con mano tembleque, Ventura alza el ala rota del sombrero, se limpia el sudor que le nubla la mirada y ve: ve la piel del tigre, colgada de un alambre, secándose al sol. Es imposible contar los agujeros. Poca comida han dejado las balas a las polillas.

Y entra en la cantina.

El amigo lo ve venir, ve venir esta piltrafa, y el vaso de caña le resbala de los dedos y se estrella contra el piso.

Todos callan, calla todo.

Fanny Corbaux, Marie Françoise Catherine Doetger (1812-1883) pintora y comentarista bíblica británica. También fue la inventora de la kalsomina (calcimina), cal con óxido de zinc añadido.

Nació en París, hija de Francis Corbaux, un estadístico y matemático de origen inglés, autor del Dictionnaire des Arbitrages des Changes y de la Doctrina del interés compuesto, que pasó gran parte de su vida en el extranjero. Cuando tenía unos quince años, su padre se vio reducido a la pobreza y, a pesar de una formación artística mínima, se vio obligada a utilizar su talento para la pintura para ganar dinero.

Rápidamente desarrolló su talento y en 1827 recibió la gran medalla de plata de la Sociedad de las Artes por un retrato en miniatura original, la medalla de plata Isis por una copia de figuras en acuarela y la paleta de plata por una copia de una grabado.

En 1828, una composición original de figuras en acuarela le valió nuevamente la medalla Isis de plata, y un retrato en miniatura, expuesto en 1830, la medalla de oro.

Durante estos años estudió haciendo copias en la National Gallery y la British Institution. En 1830 fue elegida miembro honorario de la Sociedad de Artistas Británicos y durante algunos años expuso pequeñas pinturas al óleo en su galería, pero luego abandonó el medio y se unió a la Nueva Sociedad de Pintores de acuarela, en 1839.

Expuso 86 obras en la Royal Academy entre 1829 y 1854, quince en la British Institution y 48 en la Society of British Artists.

Dibujó una serie de ilustraciones para Perlas de Oriente (1837) de Thomas Moore y otra para Cuentos de la prima Natalia (1841).

Los diseños de las "Perlas de Oriente" fueron litografiados por su hermana, Louisa. Un crítico de la Literary Gazette dijo que Corbaux había "representado la belleza oriental en todas sus variedades de voluptuosa languidez y fascinante vivacidad".

En 1839, Corbaux obtuvo una patente, junto con Francis Gybbon Spilsbury y Alexander S. Byrne, por lo que se describió como una "mejora en el modo de aplicar colores al temple, utilizando albúmina o gelatina como vehículo, a fin de hacerlos más duraderos". , y conservar el mismo cuando no se desee para uso inmediato."

Corbaux también se ganó una reputación como crítica bíblica por sus contribuciones a publicaciones periódicas y sociedades literarias sobre temas relacionados con la historia de las Escrituras. Incluyeron sus Cartas sobre la geografía física del Éxodo, publicadas en el Athenæum, y una serie sobre los Refaim para el Journal of Sacred Literature. También escribió una introducción histórica y cronológica a The Exodus Papyri, de DI Heath (1855).
