how would the companions react to sole adopting a few rats?

Honestly, I don't think they'd mind that much. For the rats, I'm going off with the ones in Far Harbour or something similar. I'm sure some have seen Molerats as pets before so nothing too dramatic of a change. Yeah, them having either light peach fuzz all around them or having patches of fur on the rats is a bit different than usual and they're a lot smaller, but it's all normal to them.

I think out of all of them MacCready would actually like the rats the most. He'd play with them, carry them around, or even have one on his shoulder. The rats like to steal toys and treats from other rats, making the rats chase to get them back. Whenever something like this happens MacCready loves watching the chase and simple "fights."

I also think Hancock would like them, to a degree. One or two rats at a time are the most he can handle. He just prefers to either sit down and play with them or just watch as they play and scurry around. He loves giving them food too. Giving them food or treats and seeing them run to hide and eat while others try to take the food back is absolutely hilarious to Hancock.

Strong though, he has to be, and I mean *has* to be monitored when holding and playing with the rats. It's all fine and dandy, holding and petting them, up until he wants to try and eat one. Just have a water spritzer around, and if Strong tries it just spray him and he'll be too shocked and confused to fight to keep his chosen rat snack in his possession.

Honestly, though, Cait would probably be the one most hesitant with the rats. She's fine looking and being around them. She'll even pet one a bit when someone is holding it. As soon as the rat tries to get her is when it shows she's not a big fan. Cait jumping away and backing up from it is pretty funny.

Yeah Piper is the only one whose romance doesn’t feel predatory. There’s also only 3 (4 of you count Ada) female companions to 13 male ones…

I can’t bring myself to do any of the romance options in Fallout 4. Something feels creepy and predatory in the ones I have encountered so far and I absolutely hate feeling that way because so far I’ve had only female companions. But all of them feel like they are inexperienced, insecure, or vulnerable and that they are written assuming these traits provide openings to flirt with them. Is it because they were written assuming the male Sole Survivor would be the default person with interest in the female companions? Is that vulnerability a ‘signal’ to the men who wrote the game?

Some of them also come forth with their tragic backstories in a sudden way that makes me feel uncomfortable, too. Cait in particular with her high-risk behavior and drug addiction, casually tells you on her second friendship talk about being enslaved and implies she’s a rape survivor because she feels she ‘owes’ you for being nice to her. Is she doing this as another high-risk behavior, almost hoping she gets knocked down? Is the game smart enough to portray someone with impulsive decisions realistically? I can’t feel like I can trust the writing. Meanwhile you can build rapport with Cait quickly just by being naked. While there certainly are hypersexual people in real life, people with addiction and people who engage in high-risk behavior in real life, I feel scummy when I think about how all this leads up to a romance option. Even if you help her ‘recover’ I feel that I had an inordinate amount of power over her during a period in her life where she had little personal agency or could have easily been coerced.

I have a girlfriend of my own and I can say that insecurity, trauma, or inexperience are not very sexy. When we struggle with mental illness or general lack of confidence we put sexy things on the back burner to address maybe more pressing psychological needs.

Codsworth likes to imagine being a father to a little robot son. Hang on, buddy, I’m getting my six hundred pounds of scrap metal out of storage.

MacCready seems to have lived in Bigtown for some period of time, or at least visited enough to have memories there. Also, the Lone Wanderer (or one of their companions/Sidney) told him about their encounter with Button Gwinnett.

Despite having little empathy for the people of the Commonwealth, Cait often becomes distressed imagining the victims of the bombs, especially when children are involved.

Danse believes that pre-war healthcare and scientific research should have been publicly owned. He hates corporations in general, especially Vault-Tec.

Nick not only loves poetry, but he’s also able to recite several famous poems such as Ozymandias and The Raven. He’s very sad to see destroyed books at the library.

It’s been confirmed by a non-Deacon source that he spent a month as a ghoul. (Somehow.) NPC dialogue implies that he was telling the truth about disguising himself as a woman for awhile, too.

Apparently Piper was a complete nightmare as a child. She would steal her dad’s pistol, shoot the combat inhibitors off robots, and let them run through town.

There’s some sort of debate in the fandom about whether Curie was originally a Miss Nanny or a Mister Handy, but she confirms in dialogue that she was a Miss Nanny.

Nick can feel pain! :(!

Deacon likes molerats, hates killing them, and wishes he could domesticate them. He should visit Sloan.

A probably incomplete list of things Danse wishes he could do: Fishing, watching a movie, playing/watching baseball, seeing a show at an amphitheater, bowling, shopping

TBH I was wrong on the last post. Preston doesn’t like swimming, his dialogue is tagged as sarcastic there. In my defense, he’s got depression and tends to speak flatly. That means that not one single companion likes to swim, except Strong who doesn’t care.

Despite maintaining there’s a difference between robots and synths, Nick believes in robot rights and often encourages robots not to think of themselves as slaves.
