Wu Cheng'en and Journey to the West (2010) 吳承恩與西遊記
Director: Kan Weiping Screenwriter: Wang Shuqiang / Ding Aimin Starring: Liu Xiaolingtong / Ma Su / Shi Xiaoqun / Sun Tao / Chi Chongrui / Ma Dehua Genre: Drama / Biography / Fantasy / Adventure / Costume Country/Region of Production: Mainland China Language: Mandarin Chinese Date: 2010-07-01 (Mainland China) Episodes: 46 Single episode length: 46 minutes Also known as: Wu Cheng En and Journey to the West / 吴承恩与西游记 Type: Crossover
Summary:
In the movie, the protagonist Wu Chengen is wise and foolish, advocating justice, suave, romantic, poetic, calligraphy and painting, and is unique through the ages; the characters of "Journey to the West" such as Sun Wukong, Tang Seng, Zhu Bajie, etc. It complements the original characters in the play; the rich and fantastic myths, fantasy, chivalry, bold and interesting artistic expression styles, and modern high-tech three-dimensional expression methods greatly expand the extraordinary imagination of heaven and earth. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, Wu Yue, a minor official in Shanyang County, Huai'an, Jiangsu Province, went to Yuntai Temple in Huaguo Mountain with his son, and talked with his old friend Puyin, hoping that his son Wu Cheng'en would be able to study and become an official and honor his ancestors. However, Wu Cheng'en, who has never forgotten his books and is very talented, fell in love with the lively monkeys in the Water Curtain Cave of Huaguo Mountain, and imagined that he could be as free, unconstrained, and omnipotent as the monkeys.
The 76-year-old old master Li has failed the examinations for more than 60 years. On this day, he entered the examination room with a rope and declared that if he failed to pass the first place, he would die. However, Wu Chengen won first place in this exam, and his friend Shen Kun came in second. Master Li, who failed the ranking, was full of regrets, but full of hope for Wu Chengen. Before he died, he asked Cai Ang, the official of the court, to discipline Wu Chengen more, so that he could be promoted to an official in the future, fulfilling his wish. Wu Chengen's elder sister, Wu Chengjia, was born beautiful. Luo Wanjin, a rich man in Shanyang County, relied on the relationship between Yan Song, the prime minister of the court, and tried every means to marry Wu Chengjia, but the Wu family refused; his son Luo Pang was jealous of Wu Chengen's talent and had nothing to do; The family formed an indissoluble grievance.
Wu Chengen's parents, sister, and wife Ye Yun are full of hope for him to study and become an official. Wu Chengen still goes his own way, reading monkey books, learning monkey steps, listening to monkey shows, and getting acquainted with monkey artist Niu Yufeng. Shen Kun and Li Chunfang, good friends from the same hometown, jokingly called Wu Chengen a monkey idiot. Although they tried their best to persuade him to cherish his talents and become an official, they couldn't resist Wu Chengen's unshakable stereotypes and his stubborn opinion that he didn't want to be an official. His friends have to let him take pleasure in monkeys, make monkeys their friends, and take writing Journey to the West as his own ambition. Accompanied by his beloved wife and a monkey, Wu Chengen traveled around the world and returned to Huaguo Mountain, which shocked the court and experienced many challenges.
However, Wu Chengen is determined, cares about the folks, and has fantastic ideas, how the Monkey King was born, the golden cudgel is like a wind, the monkeys make trouble in the Heavenly Palace, the friend Bajie refuses relatives. Yufeng, his wife, saves her husband by dripping blood, and the wits fight the old way such as Huang Feng, beating the Bull Demon King angrily, punishing pirates, and building a monkey garden in righteousness came into being. A mythological masterpiece "Journey to the West", which symbolizes the perseverance, optimism, and enterprising spirit of the Chinese people, full of ideals, great wisdom, and courage, has finally been completed under the pen of Wu Chengen.
Facing the manuscript of "Journey to the West" written by his late friend Wu Chengen, his good friend Li Chunfang sat upright at the table, wrote "Journey to the West written by Wu Chengen" on the front page, and murmured softly: Cheng En, you are the Monkey King, You are Sun Wukong! You say you are Sun Wukong! Ten years after Wu Chengen's death, his "Journey to the West" was corrected by Li Chunfang and officially published by Nanjing Shidetang in 1592. On October 8, 2005, the Wu Chengen Memorial Hall was completed and opened in Huai'an City, Jiangsu Province...

My DIY grain bowls
One of my favorite lunches to make (for myself) are grain bowls. It’s essentially a mishmash of a protein, some veggies and maybe shrooms, and a grain. Or to put it bluntly, it’s ang mo cai png lah. 😂
I finally found some bulgur wheat for cheap on my trip to Sydney and of course I hauled some back. Yes, people travel and do luxury or fashion shopping, I go to Woolies.
I had some leftover supermarket rotisserie chicken today, and that was the perfect excuse to put my new grains to use. This grain bowl contains: shredded roast chicken, Brussels sprouts, celery, oyster mushrooms, and bulgur wheat that I dressed in a faux beurre blanc sauce (more on that below).
For my grain bowls, I cook each ingredient separately, then dress them together at the end. It is actually less work than it sounds, in that I use a single technique and one pan to do the cooking consecutively. For all the veggies and shrooms, it’s just olive oil, salt, pepper - the key is in the correct application of heat to extract maximum flavors. I don’t wash the pan in between as it’s just oil, but I do wipe down with kitchen paper towel to remove any bits of food that’s stuck to avoid burning them in the next round of cooking.
I start with Brussels sprouts. Olive oil in a hot pan, throw in shredded Brussels sprouts and toss to coat thoroughly in oil. Then let it sit on high heat, and stirring occasionally only to prevent burning but you do want the leaves to brown - it’ll smell nutty and you know it’s going alright. Once done, remove all into a large mixing bowl.
Then it’s the celery. This doesn’t need browning but you do want to cook it just enough so it isn’t too raw but also not too done such that it’s soft and soggy. So this is pretty quickly done on high heat - almost like a Chinese stir fry, except to keep this dish dry, I don’t add water as there’s already a bit of moisture from the celery itself that would evaporate and lightly steam/cook the veggie. Dump into mixing bowl once done.
For the shrooms, use whatever you like. I find oyster and maitake mushrooms to be more satiating than button mushrooms. Like the Brussels sprouts, what matters most in cooking delicious mushrooms is high heat, lots of oil, generous salting, and resist mucking about in the pan and just let them sit to brown nicely. Rake them over occasionally to prevent burning. Again, they go into the mixing bowl once cooked.
Because my leftover chicken were refrigerated, I threw them into the pan to heat up gently. As the pan is already oiled and the chicken skin has fats, I don’t add oil at this stage. Remove when warm - be careful to not overcook and dry them out. I generally keep the heat on low for this stage.
While I was doing the shrooms, I also concurrently started cooking the bulgur wheat. I used 1/2 cup for 4 servings as I don’t like a lot of carbs - feel free to use more if you’d like. Follow instructions on the packet - mine said boil in water for 10 mins and drain. You just need to ensure the grain is cooked before you start the sauce.
Now the sauce. I call it a faux beurre blanc because while I used a technique typical of beurre blanc, I thin it significantly so that it’s more of a dressing than a thick creamy sauce, and I keep the shallots for texture. In a true beurre blanc sauce for seafood, the shallots are strained out so you get a smooth velvety cream. Anyway, away from the French kitchen and back here in reality — as there were some bits of chicken skin stuck to the pan from the stage before this, I deglazed it with some sherry vinegar, add a little bit of water, then added finely diced shallots to sauté. When the shallots are near done, turn the heat down super low, then add cubes of cold butter (one cube at a time, not all at once), and whisk gently until you get a thin sauce. If it’s too thick, just add a bit of water to thin it. Once done, throw in the cooked bulgur wheat to soak up the dressing, and add some chopped chives or parsley too (optional). Remember to salt the sauce especially if you butter is unsalted.
After this, it’s just a matter of mixing all the cooked ingredients well in the big bowl, then serve and enjoy. The butter sauce made this just decadent enough to obviously not qualify as a healthy meal, but enough to make this more than a boring, everyday plate of grub. The crunch and freshness of the celery also plays off well against the nutty Brussels sprouts and almost meat-like oyster shrooms. All in all a balanced meal that doesn’t feel mundane.
The health conscious ones among you might ask: can I use a different dressing and skip the butter sauce? Absolutely! My original plan was in fact to do a simple shallot vinaigrette but then I saw the butter in the fridge and that plan flew away. 😅
I made enough for 4 servings. But I’m the only one at home who eats like this, so it’s one for today and 3 more as packed lunches that I can take to work. I froze one and will see how that holds up.
Is this cheaper to DIY? Yes and no. It still costs me almost $5 per portion in ingredients to make this, so it isn’t a cheap lunch, and that’s why retail charges you $15 for a bowl. But I do this because I get to eat exactly what I want, and it is far tastier, and mostly because I do enjoy cooking and simple meals are all I have time for these days.

j.t. | 02/09/24 transcription below:
by tomorrow it will have been a year. is this what grief is? a snapped string of pearls that spilled out of my hands and now I’m turning up pieces in random corners —
the birthday ang pao you gave me that I forgot to deposit. my mother's fake orchids in the living room, crumbling apart. we used to be vegetarian once a month with you. my uncle teaching us mahjong with your tiles because you were too skilled and impatient to teach us yourself. that night was the first time that my mother ever told me stories of your childhood. rolling pastry dough in your kitchen for pineapple tarts. gently moulding your stiff fingers into a heart for the family photo. my garbled mother tongue lost in translation. your six children have always quarrelled at family gatherings. the blooming orchids in your garden that my mother wasn't allowed to touch. did I really know you? oversweet store-bought mooncakes that I refuse to eat. the only words of mine you understood were ho jiak. your soft smile and sweet laughter. I have so many things I want to tell you, so many questions to ask. eating around the mock meat in my cai fan. I didn't cry until the day after the funeral. endless birthday parties for the screaming herd of your great-grandchildren. nobody knows your birthday because you never had a birth certificate. my mother has had those expensive fake orchids for over a decade now. twisting beancurd skin around minced meat with my mother for your approval. were you a good person? the click-clack of mahjong tiles shuffled by inexperienced hands. we celebrated your birthday every year anyway. holding your hand on the way to the wet market. holding my mother as she saw your face one last time. by tomorrow it will have been a year. you were illiterate and uneducated but my mother said you were the strongest woman she ever knew.

Embracing Dharma Essence amidst Lunar New Year Celebrations
As the dazzling lanterns light up the landscape
and the vibrant energy of Lunar New Year sweeps in, it's not just about lively parades and sumptuous feasts. Every beginning is an opportunity to embark on a new chapter with a profound sense of purpose and hope. Infusing Dharma into your celebrations can provide you opportunities to cultivate merit and wisdom, making your Chinese New Year celebrations more fulfilling and meaningful.
Here are some aspects you can consider when approaching the new year:
Cleaning as a Form of Purification Before Chinese New Year, people spring clean their homes and offices to sweep away past negativities and to usher in auspicious new conditions for the new year. Our homes and living spaces are also a mandala for us to take care of. Buddha has taught that “cleaning our places of practice creates the cause for a clear mind in oneself”. Hence, cleaning these places are a great way of purification, to have a clear mind, and to accumulate merits.
Illuminate the Year with Light To usher in the new year with positivity, one can engage in the practice of making light offerings. This can take the form of butter lamps, vibrant lanterns, and other lights of veneration in the temple. By illuminating the world with lights, it signifies the dispelling of darkness of ignorance and the dawning of wisdom and hope.
Engage in Merit-making Activities Merit-making activities play a crucial role in celebrating Chinese New Year with meaning. Chinese New Year has many auspicious days such as Maitreya Buddha’s birthday, Lord Indra’s birthday, and Lantern Festival. There will be extensive prayers and offerings at the temple on these days. Take this opportunity to create abundant merits on these auspicious days by attending the Sutra recitations or making offerings to Buddha.
Practising Generosity and Kindness Chinese New Year presents a great opportunity to practice generosity and kindness for others. This can be expressed through the tradition of giving ang paos (red packets), gifts, or even a simple smile and greeting to others. Don’t underestimate the power of saying simple greetings like “Gong Xi Fa Cai” to someone. Wishing others and expressing good fortune, health, and happiness is a way to practice generosity and kindness too!
Cultivating a New Mindset Fostering a new mindset is crucial as attitudes, beliefs, and mindsets are akin to seeds planted in our minds. As the new year unfolds, individuals are encouraged to ask themselves, "What kind of seeds have I planted in my mind?" and “What kind of new seeds do I want to plant for this next year?”. The answer can come from personal reflections, guidance from our Guru, or from attending Dharma teachings. To have inspiration for how to cultivate this new mindset, do attend our first Dharma teaching of Chinese New Year called, “The Heart of Rejoicing” at the temple on the sixth day of Chinese New Year!
Making Virtuous Aspirations Chinese New Year is a time when people make wishes for the new year at the temple. Firstly, planning and setting goals for the new year will help one to have clarity in the aspirations that we seek for in the upcoming year. Secondly, seeking divine help and support for these plans to actualise in the future is vital for our aspirations to be successful. Set virtuous motivations that these aspirations will benefit self and others. This aligns your being with Buddha’s heart, bolstering the connection that we have with Buddha in actualising these wishes.
Grateful and Rejoicing Heart Have gratitude for what we have and rejoice for the successes of other people. Practice gratitude for having survived the past year and being alive in this present day for Chinese New Year. The various festivities and gatherings that we have is something that we can be grateful for. Seeing different people’s successes is also having a rejoicing heart and being happy for others.
Offering of the Senses During Chinese New Year, there will be a lot of celebratory performances, such as the lion dance, as well as many gatherings with an abundance of delicious food and beautiful decorations. One can offer these sights of beauty, festivity, and delectable tastes to Buddha. By offering our physical senses, this will provide an antidote to our attachment to these sense pleasures. Offering these sensorial things are also a great way to accumulate merits in our daily lives. We also hope that by offering these senses, all beings will also have the same causes for having the same happiness and abundance, and to have a joyful heart.
Acts of Compassion and Kindness Incorporating acts of compassion aligns closely with the principles of Dharma. How would you like to expand your capacity to give? During the Chinese New Year, extend kindness to others through charitable deeds, volunteering, or even simple acts of generosity. Embrace the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of those around you, fostering a sense of interconnectedness and compassion.
As Chinese New Year comes, the celebration takes on a deeper and more transformative dimension when infused with dharma essence. By incorporating spiritual practices, individuals can embark on a journey of auspiciousness and joy, creating a harmonious start to the Year of the Dragon.
If you are looking for meaningful activities, Thekchen Choling is a place that welcomes individuals seeking to participate in prayers and courses to deepen your spiritual life. May this Lunar New Year be filled with light, wisdom, and the boundless potential for positive transformation!
Check out our Chinese New Year festivities here.

Sigourney Weaver

Look how old I look. Grabe, napakanget kong tignan. Kitang kita ang jacket kong ngipin sa picture dahil naninilaw. 😭
Turning 30 na kami this year ng asawa ko. Advance celebration namin ng birthday niya. Thank you Lord. Na-extend pa ang aking buhay para makasama ko ang pamilya ko. Forever grateful at sana gabayan mo po kami Lord ng asawa ko sa journey namin. 🙏
