The Sammy Guevara thing

If you need a recap of the history between Sammy Guevara and Mercedes Mone, these articles from Sports Illustrated and Cageside Seats sum it up pretty well. The gist is that Sammy said something inexcusable about her in 2016, it resurfaced in 2020, and he apologized to her.

As it stands, we don't know if Mercedes accepted Sammy's apology, or if she forgave him. We don't know if they're on good terms. We don't know if Sammy was an issue in Mone's negotiations to join AEW. We don't have any reason to assume Mercedes had anything to do with Sammy's current suspension. All we know for sure is Sammy apologized to Mercedes four years ago, and now they're co-workers.

We're not going to find out if Mone and Guevara can co-exist in AEW until Sammy returns from his suspension. If Mercedes has a problem with Sammy, then I do believe she'd have the stroke at this point to keep him away from her. But in that scenario, I don't think AEW would bother with a suspension, or with misrepresenting the reason for the suspension.

There's already an established pattern in AEW for this sort of situation, because we saw it when Tony Khan tried to keep Colt Cabana away from CM Punk. Colt was never fired or suspended--they just let him sit at home unbooked, and then almost let his contract run out, and then made sure he worked on different days than Punk. That didn't work out, because there was a compelling argument that Colt didn't deserve to be treated like that, so people went to bat for him. But Sammy wouldn't have such a defense--everyone knows what he said, so it'd be a PR disaster to suggest Mercedes should "get over it" if she doesn't want to.

The bottom line is that Mercedes has all the leverage here, whether she uses it or not. The only problem that exists here is for Mercedes stans and Sammy antis who need for her to apply that leverage and annihilate his entire career. The fact she can do this, and chooses not to, short-circuits the parasocial relationship people have with these two celebrities. So you end up with fans inventing a reality where Mone is trapped in a situation she can't control, and she needs the fans' help to somehow protect her from Guevara by complaining about him on the internet.

To be clear, I'm not defending Guevara or making excuses for him. He made his bed, and now he has to lie in it. If Mercedes wants him out of AEW, all he can do is wait for the axe to fall. But if she doesn't see any need to destroy him, then I don't see any need to worry about it on her behalf.

Twitter posts from the time only link back to the cageside article and yahoo sports, which are broken and unavailable respectively. currently attempting to search Facebook but having no luck since Facebook search is so limited in its function. If anyone has a recording from the broadcast or saved the video back in 2014, upload it! The clip is likely from around September 13th to September 15th, 2014 on KATC in Lafayette, Louisiana, though it could be slightly earlier.I can give more info on how I searched some other time.

I've spent an entire evening looking for this. I am so tired. I just wanted to watch a funny bray wyatt clip :(
