19 October - La Paz, Bolivia

We found an oasis of calm in the madness that is La Paz in a place called Café del Mundo. It's top floor, white/turquoise, modern setting made it entirely different to our other experiences and, unsurprisingly, it is frequented by many other travellers from around the world who also looking for a haven from the La Paz bustle. I had a chicken, mushroom and avocado toastie. It was the least South American thing I've eaten in three weeks and it was marvellous. The picture is of the lemonade, which was also gooooood. We wandered from Café del Mundo through the Witches Market (or "Mercado De Las Brujas"), which sells all kinds of weird things. Apparently you're supposed to purchase the dead foetus of a llama and bury it under the cornerstone of your newly built home, to bring you good luck. Weeeeeird. We did not purchase any such item. Walking further north past our hotel, we headed to the red line of the "Mi Teleférico", the cable car that connects La Paz with its sister (much poorer) city, El Alto. The infrastructure is supposed to increase social mobility for those in the poorer areas. In the meantime, there is not yet a two-tier pricing structure for locals vs. tourists so for only 3bs per ride (~£0.35), you get the most amazing expansive views over the city with the dramatic snow-capped mountains in the background. We had dinner in Restaurant 1700 with its funky decor and notoriously slow food service. Worth it though, and the walk back to Hotel Rosario to flop into bed was mercifully short.
