TW: Pastry Porn. Cafe Gerbeaud in Budapest has been serving fine confections since 1858, even during the communist era. My choice was called cognac cherry dessert, filled with dark chocolate mousse and bits of cognac-soaked cherries. A memorable delight, for sure. The restaurant’s Old World ambiance is lavished with crystal chandeliers and velvety draperies, and accessorized with a macaron tower. https://www.instagram.com/p/CleP4pApbTX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Saccharine Habit: Gerbeaud Budapest
The Saccharine Habit: Gerbeaud Budapest
What’s better than dessert? Dessert with a history. With a penchant for travel, I find it even more alluring to find the history of culinary ingredients, tastes and rituals and how they impact people… and are preserved over time. Café Gerbeaud, situated at Vörösmarty tér 7 in Budapest, one of my favorite cities, is a traditional coffeehouse opened in 1858 in “Gründerzeit” style. Brainchild of…

Today's #GoodNeighborDay and I've told my neighbors to expect that I'll be testing out some new recipes! Here's another cake pic from my recent research "work"/pleasure trip to Hungary (see more with hashtag #KZ2021🇭🇺 ) I love the Hungarian cakes... Lots of interesting flavors. The one on the right is a cheesecake made with farmer's curd cheese with a bit of apricot inside. The one on the right is the famous "zserbo" which is the hungarian spelling for the French word Gerbeaud , named after the famous cafe, where i had the cake. The #zserbo is layers of sugar crust with walnut filling and apricot jam with chocolate on top. Luckily for you guys, I now have a Hungarian dessert cookbook, from which i can get inspired! #montrealeuropeans #europeancakes #mtlculture #mtlbakery #mtlcakes #hungariancake (at Gerbeaud Café) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUY4n-AjP4-/?utm_medium=tumblr

Budapest Winter Culinary Adventure Part 1
Below is part 1 of my culinary adventure list during my short business trip to Budapest:
1. Gerbeaud : Vörösmarty tér 7-8, 1051 Hungary
Enjoying a warm cup of latte and a delicious slice of cake at the popular Gerbeaud Cafe located at Vorosmarty ter.

2. Kollazs Brasserie & Bar : Széchenyi István tér, 1051 Hungary
Lunch time at Kollazs Brasserie & Bar with their signature lunch set consisting of lettuce soup, caesar salad, duck with lentils, and a chocolate mousse.
For me, the star of the meal was the simple warm bread accompanied by a delicious black olive dip.

3. New York Cafe : Erzsébet krt. 9-11, 1073 Hungary
Enjoying my tea break before a meeting at the world renowned New York Palace Cafe which is regarded as the most beautiful cafe in the world.
For my tea time, it was a selection of New York cakes accompanied by Hungarian coffee which is simply strong black coffee with a shot of alcohol. The dessert was not too bad though it is not a place that I will return again.

4. Barack & Szilva : Klauzál u. 13, 1072 Hungary
Dinner time with my team members at the cosy restaurant, Barack & Szilva, which serves delicious Hungarian cuisine with beautiful wine pairings. I selected the Hungarian traditional dinner menu with wine pairing which featured foie gras salad, goulash soup, duck fillet, and apple crepe with ice cream. The meal was memorable and comforting, and is a restaurant that I would proudly recommend to my foodie friends.

After the war let’s meet at New York!’ – The legendary coffeehouses of Budapest The coffee houses have a long history in Budapest. Coffee culture began during the time of the Turkish occupation in the 16th century, and flourished under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. While many think of Paris and Vienna as the café capitals of the world, Budapest rivals them both with its cafes filled with talented writers, poets, and artists. On the turns of the 19th and 20th century was more, than 300 coffees in Budapest, all of them having permanent visitors, who met sometimes only in their favorite coffee. There was a coffee for the journalists, vendors, butchers, carpenters, bankofficers, actors, artist..practically to all leyers of the society. The price of the coffee suprisingly was more or less the same in all of them, but the audience. Coffees – similarly to thermal baths – were the sceneries for social life. Though many were closed under the communism, several of the historical cafes have been restored and are once again teeming with life. Ruszwurm , located in the historic Castle district of Buda, is the oldest operating café in the city. Its famous cakes and coffee even caught the attention of the Austrian Empress, Elizabeth, who supposedly had Ruszwurm cakes sent to her for breakfast. Centrál Kávéház is considered one of the grandest of the historical cafes and was once a center of intelligence, attracting writers, poets, editors, and artists. New ideas were discussed and many literary works were born here. The first classic coffee house to reopen after the fall of communism in 1989, Centrál has recaptured the feeling of grandeur. Among Budapest’s coffees the legendary New York Café is probably the most famous. In the middle of the 30’s people told ‘After the war let’s meet at New York!’ told people to each other during WWII in Budapest. This elegant and glamorous historical coffee houses was opened in 1905, and After it’s opening it became headquarters to many of the great literature, there were constant rented tables for poets, writers, journalists who could drink there on credit, sometimes paying the bill with an article or poem. When taking an American friend for coffee there, she said that, “having coffee at the New York Café is like having coffee in one of the ballrooms of Versailles.” In the middle of the 30’s people told After theatre let’s meet at New York!’, but soon the phrase sadly changed to ‘After the war let’s meet at New York!’ In 2006 New York Café went over a total renovation, wich brought back its original shine and finery, gilding, chandeliers of Murano glass, restored murals and marbling. Similarly splendid is Alexandra Bookcafé, which actually was not always a coffee. This coffee is located on the second floor of the former Paris Department Store, which currently houses the Alexandra bookstore. The coffee – once upon a time ballroom of a casino seated here – is decorated with beautiful chandeliers and a fresco-style ceiling, painted by Károly Lotz. The grandiose, palace-like interior makes visitors feel like they are in the residence of an aristocrat who once used to live on Andrássy Avenue. What makes Alexandra Bookcafé particularly interesting is that both the building and its interior are fine examples of Art Nouveau, while the coffee is of neo- renaissance-style. And finally let’s talk about the Gerbeaud, which once upon a time was called „the meeting point of six elegant worlds”. In the success of the Gerbeaud the elegant interieur always played an important role. Everywhere fine woods, marble and bronze, the ceilings is decorated with rococo plaster work in Louis XIV style, while the chandeliers and wall lamps were created in Maria Theresa style. When opening Gerbeaud in 1881 had secessionist style tables sent from the Paris World Fair, and the coffee with whipped cream was served in fine China cups, the chocolates and cakes were offered on shiny silver trays. Over the past 150 years, Gerbeaud Café has numbered among its guests the cream of society and practically every famous person who has visited Budapest. Just a few names from the notable guest: Empress Elizabeth (Sissi), Ferenc Deák, Franz Liszt, King George of England, Edward, Prince of Wales; Josephine Baker, Princess Diana, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Elizabeth II, the former Austrian chancellor Franz Vranitzky, the former Czech president Vacláv Hável, Madonna, Ralph Fiennes, Melanie Griffith, Antonio Banderas, Brad Pitt… Historical coffee houses are not the only place in Budapest to experience the coffee culture. The Hungarian capital is filled with cafes and coffee houses to meet everyone’s personal taste. During warmer weather, many cafes open their outdoor terraces so you can sit and people watch while sipping your cup of coffee. Walking down any of Budapest’s pedestrian streets, you can find cafes filled with people, showcasing the vibrancy of the coffee culture.
