This is something I think about a lot. I've given Astarion two boyfriends, and they are the goodiest of goody-two-shoes. Kestrel is a Harper, and Caelnir is a very religious Bard/Paladin, and you'd think that a chaotic neutral (leaning toward evil lol) vampire would be the last person they'd associate with. But neither of them judge him for his vampirism, and they don't care if he bites people now and then, and they kill people sometimes too, so like. They're more neutral than they sound.

When they're looking for a way for Astarion to walk in the sun, they suggest curing him, and he says no. Without Cazador enslaving him, he actually likes being a vampire, aside from the sun thing. They both accept it, and find another way.

But they're half elves, so they would have a much shorter life span than Astarion, even if he were mortal. It's something none of them talk about, even as the two grow old and frail, while Astarion stays young.

I have a headcanon that half-elves sometimes have souls that are made up of shards of full elves. Kes and Cael carry parts of a shattered soul that is Astarion's soulmate. So when they die and are reincarnated, they'll find him again in their next life (whether they're still broken apart, or reborn in a single body again). And Astarion coasts on that knowledge for a long long time.

Then Caelnir dies of old age, and Astarion is DEVASTATED. He looks at Kestrel, who is only a few years younger than Caelnir, and probably won't be around much longer either, and Astarion doesn't think he can go through with watching them die over and over, in each reincarnation, while he stays the same forever.

He'd rather go with them to the other side, and be reborn with them. And while he could take off the object that protects him from the sun and wait for the dawn, he's afraid that being a vampire would prevent his soul (if he still has one) from going through the normal elven ritual of rebirth.

So that's when he starts thinking about finding a cure for vampirism.

Whether he finds the cure before his lovers are reborn or not is still up in the air. But I'm leaning towards it taking him long enough that they're reborn at least once while Astarion's on his quest.

This lets me keep my sassy vampire for a long long time, while also giving me the option of curing him. Best of both worlds, AND it comes with some angst. Win! 😆

Astarion and his Vampirism

Okay genuine question, how do people take on the idea of Astarion's vampirism post-BG3?

It can be for like his Origin path or as friendship, but I'm more wondering specifically if you romance him as Tav/Durge.

I've seen now people either being on the side of having his vampirism be cured or he accepts it as is.

For accepting, I can seeing that make sense. A lot of his dialogue is about accepting himself for who he is, for what he's lost and gained. Even dialogue for Tav/Durge towards the end and epilogue are about finding a way for Astarion to walk in sunlight but not necessarily to cure his vampirism. It also goes back to this idea that Astarion's vampirism is helpful for him since he has a way to protect Tav/Durge so I could understand why he'd be fine with it if that was the price.

On the other hand, curing his vampirism would be able to give him the ability to be the person he lost before Cazador. To enjoy things again, to not have to rely on blood. While he does lose vampire powers, we technically don't get to see too much of that because of the tadpole, so in a way, how we see him throughout BG3 is mostly his own skill.

I'm just curious since for me, I'm not sure how it'd play out since I romance him with a draconic sorceress half-elf so yes, there's an issue of her mortality for either option but she could potentially find a way to make herself live longer and all that kinda stuff.

So it's just about what Astarion would probably want I guess. What do you guys think?

I'm being very on brand today and having fantasies about Astarion in a bathtub with both of his boyfriends. Cael is sitting behind him, washing his hair, while Kes is straddling his hips, kissing him, writhing on his lap, causing water to splash over the edges of the tub. When Cael rinses the soap out of Astarion's hair, he tilts Astarion's head back onto his shoulder, stealing him from Kes, whispering into his his mouth how beautiful he is, letting Astarion nip his bottom lip and lick at the blood. They share a bloody kiss as Astarion comes inside Kes.

How would you describe Kestrel's personality?

Ray of sunshine, who sometimes slips behind storm clouds. He's always got a smile for people, and he wants to be friends with everyone he comes across. He's empathic, often seeing the core of someone before they're ready to reveal it, though he's careful not to reveal what he's learning about people too quickly; outside of his family that makes people nervous. He's not a mind reader! He's just very good at reading between the lines! And he likes to see people happy, so he does what he can for them, in big and little ways. He's flirty and loves to tease people out of bad moods.

From the outside it looks like he doesn't have a care in the world. And he's careful to keep it that way. His emotions are Very Big, and when the bad ones get out of control, so does his magic. Very few people see his anger and his sadness, and if he has his way, it'll stay that way.

What brings Kestrel joy?

Spending time with his brothers Caelnir and Demagh, cooking a nice meal for people, making people laugh. If the people around him are happy, Kestrel is happy. He loves to travel and meet new people, try new foods, new clothes, new languages. Exploring the world and meeting the people in it are his greatest joys.

What does Kestrel strongly dislike?

Seeing his friends and loved ones suffering. Or anyone, really. There's a reason he's a hero. And he hates anyone who causes harm deliberately. Slavers, thieves who target the poor, and anyone of that ilk.

Is Kestrel scared of anything?

He's terrified of spiders. When he was little, he lived in the underdark for a little while, and he got snatched up by a giant spider. He only survived because she was saving him for her hatchlings, and his older brothers managed to rescue him in time. But the spider and her hatchlings nearly killed him and both his brothers, so he has severe arachnophobia.

He's also afraid of being the reason someone is suffering. It comes from watching his mother grow ill when he was small, and feeling like he was doing something to make her that way. He understands that it wasn't his fault, but there's that seed of fear deep inside of him that sometimes blooms at unexpected times.

What is Kestrel's alignment?

Chaotic Good. He's kind and heroic, but he'll break rules and laws if he thinks they're unjust. For instance, he has no issue with stealing if it's from someone greedy or cruel, and he'll kill without blinking to save another life (though he'll try to find a way around it first). He's got a very strong moral compass, and he'll follow it before he follows the rules.

How would you describe Caelnir's personality?

Smart and curious and kind-hearted, and viciously protective of those he loves. He's easy to befriend, but is a very dangerous foe, who WILL hold a grudge. But he's also a caretaker, and can be incredibly gentle with those who need it from him.

What brings Caelnir joy?

His brothers, his music, and his goddess. Being with his brothers makes him feel whole in a way that he isn't sure how to explain, and he's very good with words, so that's saying (or not saying lol) something. There's nothing quite as delightful as that moment when a melody starts to form between his ears, and he's always got his mandolin nearby so he can start plucking it out and bringing it into the world. And when he puts on his prayer mask to commune with The Masked Lady, he feels deep comfort, all the way to his soul.

He also very much enjoys nipping a coin purse from assholes, or shooting a slaver in the eye. Simple pleasures lol

Oh, and pretty clothes. He doesn't indulge a lot, because it can get expensive, and his life on the road means he doesn't have the ability to carry a wardrobe with him. But oh, he loves a beautiful outfit.

What does Caelnir strongly dislike?

Injustice. He hates slavery, of course, but he also hates to see people ground down to almost nothing under the heels of the rich and powerful.

Is Caelnir scared of anything?

He has arachnophobia too; see previous answer about Kestrel's fears. And he's also scared of losing his brothers when he's not there for them. Because his mother left when he was 9, and came back 9 years later just to die, and he knows there's nothing he could have done to save her, but he could have had more time with her. (Don't be mad at his mom, she invited him to come with her, and he chose to stay with his dad.) It's why he follows Kestrel on his adventures. While he's very close with his older brother Dem too, he feels a stronger pull to stay at Kestrel's side.

What is Caelnir's alignment?

Neutral Good, but leaning sliiiightly toward Chaotic Good. He's more likely to follow laws, but it's because they can be used to help people if they're set up correctly. That being said, if he thinks a law is unjust, it's void in his eyes.

My dearest boys! I commissioned @purgatory-jar to do some portraits of Caelnir and Kestrel, and they turned out beautifully! I love her work so much, everything she's ever made for me is my favorite ❤️

• Race - Kes is half sun elf, Cael is half drow.

• Class - Kes is a wild magic sorcerer, Cael is a bard/fighter.

• Backstory - They're half brothers who have the same human mother and different elven fathers. Cael is older and raised Kes after their mother died. Kes is a Harper, and Cael trained for the Order of the Silver Dark which is a group that helps drow and other underdark denizens escape to the surface. (thanks for letting me borrow the Order @joasakura!)

• Personality - Kes is optimistic, cheerful, flirty, diplomatic, and patient. Cael is sarcastic, protective, the Dad Friend who absolutely tells Dad Jokes, and sometimes a little bit too paranoid (he grew up in the underdark, it's survival instinct!)

• Who they're romancing - they're both romancing Astarion because they don't mind sharing, and they can take turns being bloodless lol... Kes is also romancing Halsin and the Emperor.

• An interesting hobby they have - Kes likes to cook because it feels like magic that won't backfire on him. Cael is a music nerd to the core.

I saw @joasakura's post about her OC Dem's family and lineage and I decided it would be fun to do a post for his brothers, my OCs Kestrel and Caelnir 😁

Mother - Jayne Tav, human bard and Harper. Has an insatiable wanderlust and a weakness for sexy elves.

Caelnir's Father - Elamshim Mizzrune, Seldarine Drow and Paladin in the Order of the Silver Dark. He trains younglings who want to join the Order, and acts as a father figure for many orphans. Married to Jayne in the human tradition.

Kestrel's Father - Lurleath, a sun elf spy who might be from a noble family. His name might be a pseudonym. Jayne had a week long fling with him, and when she informed him later that she was pregnant, he denied the child was his then disappeared. Kestrel has never met him.
