5 Things The £1,049 iPhone 11 Pro Can’t Do — But A £225 Android Can | Ditly

6 years ago I said that in around 5 years laptops and desktop computers will be a niche market due to smartphone capability advancing at a phenomenal rate. I said that we will get to a point where we will just purchase a phone, dock it to a screen and keyboard and that will also be our PC. Oh, how I was wrong. Over the past 5 years, we have seen smartphones advance at a snail’s pace, and frustratingly one of the slowest of them all has been Apple.

With the release of the new £1,049 iPhone 11 Pro, it’s even more prominent how far behind Apple is when a £225 Xiaomi Mi 9T has more capability and features. Here are the top 5 things the £1,049 iPhone 11 Pro can’t do but the £225 Mi 9T Pro can.

USB Type C Port

The USB type C port has become the well known standard charge and sync port across a multitude of devices, from laptops, phones, smart devices and peripherals. It’s strong, powerful and intelligent. Its physical design is robust, it can not be easily damaged or bent and as long as you buy a decent cable it shouldn’t fall apart. Its data transfer rates are incredible, with the addition of the thunderbolt standard it is capable of data transfer rates up to 40GB per second. It also has built-in intelligence meaning you can plug your laptop charger into your phone and it won’t blow up, not only will it not blow up, it will actually charge your phone just fine. This interchangeability and no need to worry about the right charger for the right device is the modern way of tech.

Apple, however, has decided to stick with the out-dated lightning connector for the iPhone 11. It’s a weak connector, can not reach anywhere near the data speeds of USB-C with thunderbolt and is also licensed and controlled 100% by Apple. This is a big one. Because the lightning connector is licensed by Apple, if any 3rd party company wants to manufacture cables or devices using lightening they must pay a costly licence fee to Apple. This is the reason why the choice of wired lightning headphones is very limited. USB-C, on the other hand, is an open standard that any company can manufacture cables and devices for.

Notch-less

The wide notch was being replaced by teardrop front-facing cameras on phones as far back as this time last year with the Vivo V11. The £225 Xiaomi Mi 9T has completely ditched the idea of a front-facing camera eating into the screen and have instead placed the camera on a pop-up mechanism at the top. This creates a stunning, full-body and nearly bezel-free display. Plus, you also get an ambient light on the pop-up camera so you can add a little splash of coloured light to your selfies — nice touch.

Apple, on the other hand, has just re-used the exact same form factor as the previous iPhone 10 with a huge notch at the top of the display which basically renders the two strips that extend up the sides as pointless. Apps still don’t fit within the notch very well and from one of the richest companies on earth, we expected more innovation.

Under screen fingerprint scanner

The iPhone 11 wouldn’t need such a big notch for FaceID if it reinstated FingerprintID right under the screen. That’s right, the £225 Xiaomi Mi 9T has an under-screen fingerprint scanner, meaning you just tap the screen in the middle and you’ve unlocked your phone. It’s fast, works when you’re lying down, wearing a big hat or even sunglasses. Surely, when a phone has a price tag of £1,499 it should be able to include a seemingly simple feature which exists on a £225 phone?

2 ‘Physical’ SIM cards

The ability to have 2 physical SIM cards in an iPhone is something I have wanted from way back when Apple was releasing the iPhone 4. But it never came. And it never came the year after, or the year after that. So I have given up. With the iPhone 10, they did launch the ability to have a virtual SIM card alongside the physical but that option isn’t always supported, it’s often complicated to set up and isn’t as interchangeable as literally popping a SIM card out and adding another.

Having the ability to run Dual SIM card in a phone has multiple benefits for many people. The obvious benefit is the work / personal split. Many people carry two phones, one for work and one for personal. Although it may sound fairly flashy at first, if you’ve ever had to do this you’ll know that it’s actually quite an inconvenience. Being able to have both your work number and personal in one phone with the addition of clever software to allow you to disable one or the other at any point would be super helpful to millions of people. The £225 Xiaomi Mi 9T knows that and that’s why it offers a dual micro-SIM card tray, so you can do just that. Plus, because it’s Android you can configure a multitude of options to allow you to cleverly alternate between to two SIMs using either stock software or third-party apps.

Headphone jack

Yep, it’s still on this list. The classic 3.5mm headphone jack. It was removed back in 2016 from the iPhone 7 but it is still causing waves of anger even now. At first, I wrote about how I thought it wasn’t much of an issue and I actually sided with Apple on the basis that consumers demanded more technology to be crammed into a smaller form factor, so something had to give. However, I was wrong. The removal of the headphone jack has frustrated me ever since for one core reason. Lightening. Unless you pay Apple’s, ridiculous £9 for a tiny lightning to headphone jack connector, it is almost impossible to get a decent connector or a decent set of headphones with a lightning cord. This means I’m forced to either use Apple’s out of the box wired lightning headphones or pay up for some wireless Bluetooth headphones. None of which I want to do as I really enjoyed using my relatively in-expensive Sony earbuds which provided a great quality of sound.

To also, counteract my own argument about there not being enough space to fit it in anymore, the £225 Xiaomi Mi 9T seems to be able to do it just fine, and it still has 4 cameras, a pop-up mechanism and motor, a huge screen, huge battery, 6GB of RAM and everything else that goes into a phone — so why can’t Apple do it? They can, they just don’t want to because they can make more money selling £199 AirPods.

Maybe it’s not all bad?

Okay, so I can’t just bash Apple and be pro-Android all day and be an avid user of all of Apple’s products, that’s fairly hypocritical of me. I still like Apple’s products, they’re engineered to a high standard and I trust that they will work reliably with free software updates for many years to come. I also still believe the “it just works” phrase still stands. Apple’s hardware to software integration is still silky smooth across all of their devices and that is keeping me hooked on my iPhone 8 and 7 year only Mac Book Pro for the time being.

However, the above rant all comes from someone who’s been a long term Apple fan but is frustrated at the rate of development combined with the increasingly high premium I have to pay to continue using Apple products. If Apple wants to charge £1,049 for its baseline iPhone 11 Pro, then that’s fine — but it should absolutely smash sub £300 Android phones out of the park with all of their features, and more, wrapped in Apple’s finely-tuned engineering elegance. But it doesn’t, and that’s disappointing.

Introduction

I recently switched from the NZXT H200i (mini-ITX, ~26L) to the Cerberus X (E-ATX, ~19L). After a few weeks of usage and testing I wanted to go ahead and give my thought process and results.

Purpose and Problems

I had been attempting to downsize my PC case while maintaining adequate thermals. More importantly, I wanted lower noise output as the case was going to be right next to my head.

I started with the NZXT H200i, which I bought at launch in December 2017. But that brought with it some unforeseen problems. The EVGA G2 PSU that I was using completely covered the bottom intake, while completely choking off the GPU from air. Temps were higher than expected and I tried several workarounds. If your PSU completely closes off the bottom intake, you're going to have a bad time. The GPU and PSU trap air between them, causing the GPU to cook itself. You need negative pressure and an open bottom filter to get that air out of there. And even then, the thermals/noise become only adequate. I wanted my PC to be as quiet as possible, and when a case is 2 feet from your head, you are going to hear fan noise.

To clarify, this is what I mean by fan noise. I've heard people tell me that the Noctua NF-A12x25 is silent up to ~1,500 RPM. Some claim it's quiet at up to 2,000 RPM. It's not. At least not when 2 feet from your head. I have to run mine at around 900 RPM for effectively total silence. So clearly, I have a more stringent definition of silence for my specific use case, so now you should have an idea of what I was going for.

The MSI GTX 1070 Ti Titanium that I was using, and it was running at 77-82° in World of Warcraft at up to 2,100 RPM on the stock fan curve. It ran cooler and quieter in other games, but still warmer/louder than I would like. There's something about WoW that pushes cards to a higher power draw despite not being a modern looker. Since this was my worse case scenario and the game that I play the most, it's what I'm using to measure temps with. Also, my case is above the forced air vent in my office, which is bi-directional. So in the summer it's fine with A/C blowing at it. In the winter? With heat blowing at it, it's a problem.

Enter the Cerberus X, manufactured and distributed in North America by Sliger. I had a few criteria for a replacement to the H200i, and they were:

Able to accommodate a wide range of parts, not too many compromises

White

Opaque panel so I didn't have to color-coordinate the interior

Ability to allow for good airflow without the need for liquid cooling

A small footprint so that it could remain on my desk

Support for ATX motherboards for the next round of upgrades

The Cerberus X appeared to be the solution to my problems.

Configuration and Results

I knew that I wanted to do air cooling exclusively, with a tower-style cooler. I opted to maintain my Cryorig H7 (which does fit, if you remove the included side bracket). This meant a few things. First, I'd need an SFX or SFX-L PSU, so I opted for the Corsair SF450 Platinum (I did try it in the H200i for about a week, and it didn't make an impact, surprisingly).

Then, I needed to come up with the case fans and layout. I opted for four Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM fans. I used two for the intake at the bottom, one as a front/bottom intake, and the last one to replace the stock fan on the H7. You can see the layout HERE. I apologize for the lack of cable management. The idea behind this fan layout is positive pressure (all 3 case fans pulling air in) plus convection cooling (heat rises), forcing most of the warm air either out the top vent or forced out the rear by the CPU cooler.

Finally, I needed to swap the GPU. The MSI GTX 1070 Ti Titanium was 140mm tall, but with the power connectors, it went past the 154mm allowed for the side panel. So I got the MSI RTX 2060 Gaming Z. This would be a sufficient side grade as GPU performance wasn't an issue for me. The rest of the system specs:

Intel Core i7-7700k

EVGA Z270 Stinger ITX motherboard

G-Skill Ripjaws V 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3000 CL 15

Samsung 960 Evo 1TB NVME

And that's literally it aside from the aforementioned PSU and GPU. I really could have gone with a smaller case, but I'll be switching to an ATX platform later this year or early next. Just getting ready.

First I ran the system with the MSI Titanium. I wanted to see if it cooled down. This was more like an open-air test bench as the side panel could not be put on. Temps dropped from a peak of 82° to 67°. Fan RPM plummeted. It was quiet. Mission accomplished. Time to put in the 2060, put on the side panel, and see how bad it gets.

The new card? 63° under full, sustained loads. I can get it to spike to 65° if the home heating is going full blast, but the card quickly knocks it back to 63°. Fan RPM is typically around or under 1,200 RPM, with an occasional push to near 1,300. It's quiet. In fact, it has one minor issue. For lighter gaming loads the temps will on rare occasion drop into the low 50s and the fans will eventually cut off, so you can hear them spin back up briefly when the temp surpasses 60°. But it's a short burst and not very loud.

My next concern was CPU temps. The setup that I have greatly favors the GPU. Using an extremely conservative fan curve on the Cryorig H7, gaming temps tend to be in the 50s (I can get into the 60s in Forza Horizon 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider). This is a few degrees warmer than the H200, but nothing to complain about. Using Handbrake, my most demanding CPU task, it fluctuates between 67° and 70° C. That's with the Noctua NF-A12x25 attached to the H7 running at only 1,335 RPM. This thing is silent! (CPU is not delidded, but I'm also running at stock speeds).

Imperfections

No case is perfect, so here I'm going to mention ALL of the flaws of the Cerberus X.

First, it's not a mass-produced case. As such, the price is higher than what a similar mass-produced case would potentially cost. However, there's no mass-produced competition so while the price is high, we can't say it's a poor value for what it gives.

Next is the overall design. It is not filtered (though you can order compatible filters), so dust will be a concern. I'm going to watch this and see how bad it gets, and if necessary, I'll move to the filters down the road.

Another issue with the design is that there is almost zero thought given to cable management. Basically, everything was put into making this as compact as possible while housing larger parts with fewer compromises. Yes, you can use an ATX mobo, an ATX PSU, a 280mm AIO, and a fairly large GPU. But there's no room between the rear-side panel and the mobo tray. Absolutely none. So you'll need to get creative with the cable management. No big deal for me (as you saw from the mess in the interior photo), but those who opt for the windowed panel will take issue with this to some degree.

While the case supports E-ATX, ATX, and ITX, there's no standoff holes pre-drilled for MicroATX. So keep that in mind if buying this case over the non-X version, which supports both MicroATX and ITX.

Finally, the top vent/panel. In white, I can see what look like black dots along the top, because the paint job is less than perfect. Basically in many of the holes, at the edge of where the hole meets the top, there's a small chip in the paint. This is in the majority of the holes and from where I sit it's quite obvious, and you can see it HERE (zoom in if needed), though it's more pronounced in person. I suspect this will be an issue with the white and red versions, but fine for the black and grey. I'm ok with it, but if you're OCD, get the black-top option for your white or red case.

In summary, the flaws are price, lack of included filtering, lack of included cable management options, lack of MicroATX support, and chips in the top white (and likely red as well) panel.

Conclusion

I outlined above what I was aiming for in a case. The Cerberus X met or exceeded every requirement. The flaws that it has either don't impact me, or can be mitigated through reasonable measures (separate filters, black top). Every time I purchase a product there's some form of compromise that I have to make. Not this time. After 4 cases in 3 years, I think I've finally found the successor to my Lian-Li K10B, which I used for 7 years (May 2008 - August 2015).

I highly recommend the Cerberus X for users who want an ATX tower that is extremely compact, won't make you compromise on every piece of hardware like an ITX chassis would, and offers solid thermals. Oh, and...so long as you can fit it within your budget ($235 - $360, depending on configuration).

One Plus 7T Review: An Incredible Phone for a Reasonable Price

Today, the OnePlus 7T goes on sale in the US, and I can safely say that if you’re in the market for a new phone, it should be a front-running contender. Loaded with flagship features, at $599 the 7T is almost a no-brainer. Let’s take a look at why I think this is the best phone for your money.

If you haven’t picked up a new smartphone in a few years, you’ll be in for a bit of sticker shock when looking at what’s available: Prices starting at $749.99 are the norm for mid-tier models with flagships starting in the $1000 range. :choke:

What’s a prospective buyer on a budget supposed to do? One excellent option has always been the phone models offered by OnePlus, a company who prides themselves on their tagline #neversettle. Over the last few years, they have really begun to enforce that promise.

The OnePlus 7T features a 6.55″ 3D Corning Gorilla Glass AMOLED display with a smooth 90 Hz refresh rate (like we saw on the recent 7 Pro). The 7T runs on the latest and most powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ mobile platform, and it comes with 8GB RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB user memory. The 7T has an excellent, accurate, and fast in-display fingerprint sensor, but it can also be unlocked via PIN or facial unlock (which is equally fast and accurate).

Included in the box are the OnePlus 7T, a 30W Warp Charge 30T wall charger, a USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable, a SIM tool, a quick start guide, a welcome letter, safety information, a warranty card, a OnePlus logo sticker, and a clear TPU case. A non-glass screen protector comes already installed on the phone right out of the box.

The OnePlus 7T measures approximately 6.3″ long by 2.9″ wide by 0.3″ thick, and it weighs 6.7 ounces. Its body is composed of 3D Corning Gorilla Glass on both the front and back; the side rails are aluminum. In hand, the phone feels really good; it’s sleek and well-balanced, and while the phone is elongated, it doesn’t feel top-heavy. I like that the display is flat rather than curved like the 7 Pro was. I’ve come to realize that although I like how curved edge glass looks on a device, for actual use I prefer a flat display. On the top center of the display, there is a little “waterdrop” notch that houses the 16-megapixel front-facing camera.

The 7T is available in either Frosted Silver or Glacier Blue I was sent.

Here’s a clearer shot of the notch; it’s really small and unobtrusive. At the top of the phone, there is a microphone. If you look closely, you’ll see the long narrow ear speaker that also functions as a second speaker for dual stereo sound. Speaking of stereo sound through the speakers, it’s actually pretty impressive. While it’s not loud enough to rock a room, the Dolby Atmos sound is rich and strong enough so that you can enjoy playing a game or listening to music without feeling like you need to stream to a better speaker; this also makes for an excellent speakerphone experience.

On the right side, there is a power button and a mute switch. The textured mute switch has three locking positions: ring, vibrate, and off.

On the left side, there is a volume rocker.

On the bottom, there is a Dual SIM tray, USB Type-C port, and the second speaker.

On the back, there’s a circular cluster that houses the triple camera lenses and the LED flash. The cameras include the main 48-megapixel lens, a 12-megapixels telephoto lens, and a 16-megapixels ultra-wide lens.

Battery Life

The OnePlus 7T has a 3,800 Lithium-Ion battery that can last for about 8 hours with my typical use which leans heavily on surfing, reading news sites, perusing and posting to social media, writing and answering emails, playing word games, taking lots of photos, and reading Kindle books. The good news is that when charging is required, the all-new Warp Charge 30T will get the battery from 0 to 70% in around a half-hour. The 7T doesn’t have wireless charging, but since that is more about convenience than speed, I’m okay without it.

Speed

I have zero complaints regarding the 7T’s speed. Between the 8GB RAM and the Snapdragon 855+, there are no stutters or stalling whatsoever; it is fast and smooth. Realize that I am not a huge gamer, but I am a power user — and I’ve had to suffer through weird stalls and stutters on other devices (:cough: Pixel 3 XL :cough:). The combo of 8GB RAM with the 855+ on the 7T is the virtual equivalent of a chef’s kiss. I like that the 7T comes loaded with Android 10 right out of the box, and OnePlus’s OxygenOS doesn’t add a lot of unnecessary bulk to the stock Android experience.

Camera

Judge for yourself! Each one of the photos below is a thumbnail. Click on one to open the gallery where you can see larger unedited photos. I’m in Hong Kong for the next few days, so I’ll add a few more as I take them.

The camera feature that really shines for me is the macro setting. I realize that this may be a niche request, but not many phones have cameras that can handle being so close to something and picking up as much detail. Check this out …

The Display

The OnePlus 7T’s AMOLED display features a 90 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and a 20:9 aspect ratio; this all combines to make for an excellent experience when watching movies, reading, or playing games. The notch is so tiny and unobtrusive, you can almost forget that it’s there.

Gotta love the near bezel-less display!

Depending upon what you are looking at, you may not even see it.

In bright sunlight, you will notice the screen is a bit harder to see, but that’s typical so I’m not holding it against the 7T.

Overall, the OnePlus 7T has proven to be one of the fastest, brightest, and most perfectly sized (for my hand, anyway) phones that I’ve ever used. When compared to my daily driver, the Pixel 3XL, I’m blown away by the 7T’s speed and how much bigger (and nicer) the screen is. The 7T’s features and build make it perform like a flagship phone, but the price makes it much more budget-friendly than most. If you are in the market for an affordable new Android phone with all the bells and whistles, the OnePlus 7T is the one to beat.

Well, it turns out, they have a decent lineup of rackmount cases, 6 in all; ranging from 2U to 4U, their flagship being the RM420.

First off, the RM420 is a rack-mountable 4U chassis with room for up to 20 hot-swappable SAS/SATA drives. The case measures 17.26″ (W) x 6.93″ (H) x 25.98″ (D) / 438.5mm (W) x 176mm (H) x 660mm (D), weighs in at 17Kg (37.5lbs), and has room for an SSIE-EEB or E-ATX motherboard. Some of the other notable features of the case include 4 x hot-swap 80 x 38nn PWM fans, 2 x USB 2.0 ports up front, room for a slim ODD drive, and thick 1.2mm steel construction.

The front of the chassis features the already mentioned 20 removable drive trays, 2 x USB 2.0 ports, the slim ODD tray, two handles, and a bunch of LEDs for various functions. The drive trays do not incorporate any locking mechanism, but I guess the idea is that this will be in a cage, which features a lock itself. When shipped, the trays employ a plastic tray to keep form and should remain present if no disk is present. When compared to my favorites, asustor trays, these pale in comparison. A plastic mechanism is used for latching, the rails are thin and flimsy, and I wish they were complete trays. However, they are light, and when you have 20 of them occupying your case, I can see why SilverStone decided to cut some of the fat.

The sides of the RM420 have some small cutouts for ventilation and a near tool-less rail system (rails sold separately). You can install the RMS04-20’s easily, and each is secured to the case with three Phillips head screws.

Around back, the case has a ton of cutouts to allow air to exit the case. The standard motherboard I/O cutout and seven expansion slots find a home here. Additionally, the case comes with a variety of plates to install a variety of types of PSU. For me, the standard ATX plate will serve me well enough; redundant PSUs are almost pointless when you have only one pole coming into your basement datacenter.

The entire top of the case is a removable panel, released by two buttons. Once removed all that SilverStone glory is revealed.

The first thing that really stands out to you is the drive cage and backplane. The RM420’s backplane is nestled comfortably behind the four removable 80mm PWM cooling fans and requires SFF-8087 connections to an HBA or RAID card; unless your motherboard has native support. In total, there are five SFF-8087 and seven 4-pin Molex power connections. When your system is installed, this space becomes incredibly tight and squeezing your fingers through to connect things can become difficult.

On the top of the drive cage, you will find three basic sections. One for either a slim ODD or a hard drive, the front I/O, and the third for a 2.5 or 3.5″ hard drive. If I had everything I wanted, I would as for an additional 2.5 space as the hard drive trays are not designed to equip a 2.5″ drive. This makes storage scenarios like Storage tiering more difficult.

I have to admit, when I first starting thinking about what a premier consumer case manufacturer would do with a rackmount case, I was a bit skeptical. Images of glowing lights and rash designs along with red LED fans were dancing through my head. However, what I ended up getting was a well-manufactured case that has all the things that we, as computer enthusiasts, should expect in a rack-mount case. Things like a great attention to detail, no sharp edges, high-quality components, thoughtful installation options, and much more. All this amounts to something that other companies should start taking note of.

SilverStone has set the standard for my expectations in an affordable rackmount chassis. Gone are the days of sliced fingers and bend away parts. I now expect something different. I expect everyone to take note and I will not drop my hard earned cash on anything less. Today, I looked at the RM-420 and found more than a case to hold 20 drives. Instead, I found a reintroduction of sorts. I was introduced, once again, to what we should expect from our investments. Seriously, who do we have to settle on inferior cases that cost the same amount of money when we have a company like SilverStone producing equipment like this?

Don’t get me wrong, there are some things I would like to see change about this case. For one, I would like to see drive trays that can accommodate 2.5″ and 3.5″ drives as well as locks. Additionally, I would appreciate some sort of card retainer implemented to keep my expensive SAS HBA/RAID and Expander cards from bending under the pressure of cabling. Also, call me nitpicky, I would have also liked fewer 92mm or 120mm fans incorporated instead of the 80s and have them installed on the opposite side of the fan wall for easier replacment when a system is installed.

When all is said and done, I find it hard to think of many cases in this price range that can compete. There is the NORCO offering (RPC-4220 and RPC-4224) and a couple from iStarUSA, but outside of that… the rest of the competition is at least double in price.
