U know I’m just putting together how it rly is smart that Thorin chose an oak branch rather than a piece of like, carved oak.
Oak has a tendency to split along the grain, which runs vertically across the wood. I’m using an oak branch, the grain runs parallel to his arm rather than perpendicular, which prevents it from splitting when a mace smashes into it when he holds it up to guard himself.
So yah. Neat.

Cleaned up the joints a bit to put it together. While it's actually pretty sturdy gonna add some glue and nails just to keep things tight.

Been working on a bunch of random projects recently and haven't really finished any of them... Got a nice make your own backsaw kit, been trying to get decent at saw sharpening, working on some jigs for making some stakes furniture, and been working on improving my hand cut dovetails. Also been reading some great books from Lost Art Press, the Anarchist Design Book and the Joiner and Cabinet maker have been adding tons of fun ideas of things to make.

So I was watching Scott the Woz rant about his collection of Arcade1Up cabinets and how they're expensive for the little that you get and all I could think of was, "I think I could make that, but better!" And all I started kinda figuring it out, but I don't have all the tools for it, but like, you can make your own Nintendo Switch powered arcade cabinet!
Tumblr media
All the complicated tech bits are off the shelf components that require no wiring or soldering or any of that. You've got 8BitDo's arcade controller plugged into a Switch dock where the coin mechanisms would be and then all that goes to a mini flat screen. You can plug those into a power strip mounted inside the cabinet near the back, and then the entire arcade cabinet runs on just one cable plugged into a wall.
I don't have the budget for the hardware or the tools required to fabricate the cabinet itself, but like, if you have the time and the tools, I'm pretty sure this could be built in a week especially with something like a laser cutter or a CNC machine.
Someone please build this!

Surface rust removal on the new (to me) Delta table saw using a method I saw on Inheritance Machining. Cover the surface with shop paper towels, soak with evaporust, then cover with cling wrap and leave overnight. We’ll see how it does!
The saw is in surprisingly good shape for the amount of rust on top, the trunnions are smooth and the lift/tilt wheels and gears spin freely.

long time no post! Here's a 3-piece set I created this semester! I created a series of pieces based on a sacred item, which I chose as a childhood necklace of mine!
From top to bottom: We have a carved and stained poplar trinket dish- then a simple white oak standing cabinet (the patterning and rays are GORGEOUS)- and then finally, we have a mixed cherry and walnut tea tray with a laser-etched design!
This was my (second) first time working with wood as a medium, and it was so much fun! Hopefully I will be able to post more woodworking projects in the future!

Sanded off the old finishes to get things a little more uniform and neat.
The wood was from some old abandoned shelves when I worked at an antique mall, and a discarded work bench surface from when I worked retail. I used the shelves to stabilize some metal shelves, and the benchtop on my old folding work table, until a basement leak caused both to warp a bit. As well as ruin many other things.
The warping isn't as noticeable when I rip it down thin though, so, just making use of things the best I can instead of tossing them.
