Imagine stepping into the shoes of a recruiter for Emirates, one of the world’s most luxurious airlines, tasked with identifying candidates who don’t just meet the criteria but truly stand out as potential ambassadors for the brand. Galley Gala No. 4 - Saudia
Okay, so Saudia's livery isn't fantastic. But their cabin crew uniforms? Top notch.
I feel like the first thing that pops into a Westerner's mind when considering what a Saudia stewardess might look like is "aren't women in Muslim-majority countries legally required to wear a hair covering?" And the answer for airline cabin crew is not only 'no', but actually a fairly emphatic one. Emirates and Qatar Airways actually both ban the hijab (the hair covering). This means that, if you're hijabi and hoping to be a flight attendant, British Airways or WestJet would be a better choice than the national airlines of countries where the majority of women are hijabi. That's bizarre to me, personally.
(It should be clarified that the majority of these countries actually employ primarily foreign cabin crew; while certainly many Saudia flight attendants would have always been Muslim, they only began hiring Saudi women in 2020. Before this, they were all foreigners. The majority were Filipino, Thai, or Eastern European. This is true of many fields in many countries in the Persian Gulf. The UAE and Qatar also have never required head coverings by law, and from what I've heard non-Muslim foreigners generally just don't wear them.)
Tumblr media
Saudia's cabin crew, until 2020, dressed in a very smart blue pantsuit with gold hardware and a crisp white shirt underneath. From the neck down, it is literally just a very nice-looking flight attendant uniform which doesn't come with a skirt option in order to preserve hijab (the concept).
Tumblr media
Underneath the jackets, there are these lovely light-looking shirts and matching blue vests. I would, in a heartbeat, wear exactly identical clothing to a pre-2020 Saudia flight attendant, except with different shoes. It's stylish! And it comes with these headpieces which have headscarves attached to them, in order to actually cover the wearer's hair. It's a pretty stylish and clever way to approach the task. The scarf blends really well into the vest without constricting the neck, so if it catches on something in an evacuation the wearer won't be horribly strangled. I fully approve.
In 2020, they released an updated version. In addition to incorporating cabin crew's feedback on comfort and practicality, it updates the appearance to something I think is very chic.
Tumblr media
These coats, with the brown gloves and shoes, are gorgeous, and I just adore the new darker blue. These are just downright nice outfits. If you asked me what job these women have, I would not guess that they're flight attendants - I would think they're working in some glamorous, high-profile job. Being a flight attendant in Saudi Arabia is not considered glamorous in the least, but you wouldn't be able to tell it from this updated look.
Tumblr media
In addition to the darker blue, the female cabin crew are now given the choice to wear skirts, and their suits are given a belted waist for a very 40s look. I like it a lot. I think these are some of the best looking 'traditional' flight attendant uniforms out there. This has all the features Saudia's livery should have, but doesn't.
Here's something a bit weird, though. I think Saudia may have just banned the hijab*?
*The literal headscarf. The rest of their uniform is still quite hijab-compliant as far as I, a non-Muslim man, can tell.
Tumblr media
So, there's this drapey bit. It's pretty similar to Emirates's uniforms (which I will discuss some day). Emirates bans the hijab. Emirates flight attendants are all required to remove their hijab for work, if they wear one. Saudi Arabia, until 2018, required all women, including non-Muslims and foreigners, to wear abaya. Since 2018, there is no legal requirement to wear a hair covering, and now their flag carrier seems to have banned hijabs for flight attendants.
The absence of a hair covering inbuilt in the uniform isn't equivalent to it being banned, of course. The reason I think it might be is that it's been three years now and I haven't seen anything to indicate that it isn't, despite other people asking the same question. When this is partnered with the habits of other carriers it begins to feel like it implies something. I don't know. I can't find Saudia saying anything on the topic. This particular headgear really looks almost identical to Emirates's in particular. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bit of active imitation going on, since Emirates is absolutely massive and Saudia is probably kicking themselves for not getting into imitating them earlier and buying A380s while they still could. Imagine the efficiency of all-economy A380 hajj flights. On the other hand, Saudia's low-cost subsidiary, Flyadeal, doesn't require head coverings but does allow them, so I ultimately just don't know what's happening and am sort of curious. If anyone reading this knows more than I do, I would love to hear from you.
Tumblr media
Anyway, all that aside, Saudia cabin crew look absolutely fantastic. These uniforms are elegant in their wide strokes and immaculate in their details, and are up there as one of my favorite uniforms that could be described in structure and vibe as "a suit".

Lyndsay Doran: Adding Sustainability Touches and Lifestyle Choices to Premium Apparel Products at L’Couture
Sustainable luxury apparel is the “New-Now”. Due to environmental concerns that have risen in the past years, almost all kinds of industries in the world are integrating and incorporating sustainability initiatives into their business operations, strategies, and brand products as well. For the fashion and apparel industries, the businesses, companies, and organizations working in this field, have adopted to use of sustainable methods and actions as alternatives to transition to organic, eco-friendly, zero-carbon strategies, and more. To combat environmental challenges as well as continue to operate businesses in the world, brands are driving towards a more eco-conscious clothing mindset as well as encouraging their loyal customer bases to lead a comfortable, healthy, safe, and sustainable lifestyle.
Tumblr media
We all know that there are some fashion and apparel industries where an individual or a group of people may love the design, look, and style, but end up finding that there’s no size match for them at all!! That disappointing feeling may cause negative feelings to rise toward one’s own body. Body dysmorphia or Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a genuine mental health condition that can stem from such an incident. This illness can arise from one’s constant worrying regarding the appearance and looks of their body. Although to no intentional fault of anyone, it can be said that it is high time that the fashion and apparel industries and brands in today’s world can be pushed to make clothes that are a Fit-All. Conscious consumerism practices by brands can lead and encourage customers to choose the desired style, and design, as well as the clothes sold by a brand that is on a mission towards ethical fashion choices. This way, diverse customers of all sizes can continue to fully appreciate, comfortably wear, look, and feel glamorously in their desired attire. Spreading awareness of body positivity in healthy ways can be encouraged in this way (not the only treatment for BDD).
Therefore in this article, we shall cover and discuss the story and journey of a premium sustainable fashion business in Activewear Lifestyle – L’Couture founded by Lyndsay Doran, who is a Dubai-based British woman-entrepreneur and businesswoman. The Athleisure brand encourages one to elevate their fashion, style, and fit with their premium and sustainable quality in Wardrobe Essentials.
Lyndsay Doran – CEO and Founder:
Lyndsay Doran is the Founder and the Chief Executive Officer at L’Couture (LC). Lyndsay founded the brand in the year 2019 and the business took off immediately.
“At LC – We Get It. Life moves fast, but that shouldn’t stop you from feeling your best.”
Before her founding and building of L’Couture, Lyndsay Doran worked as an Emirates Airlines Cabin Crew, her dream job. Her life changed when she met her husband – a fitness enthusiast, who gave her the idea and inspired her to open up a business for women’s clothing in Athletic Wear and to focus more on clothing styles and fashion that are limited or unavailable. Soon after investing all her savings and earnings from her employment as a First Class Cabin Crew, Lyndsay opened up shop – L’Couture in the Dubai Mall, Dubai, in The United Arab Emirates.

L’Couture – LC:
Founded in 2019 and established in Dubai, UAE by CEO Lyndsay Doran, L’Couture is a fashion and apparel business brand focusing on Athleisure Wear. Incorporating and integrating ethical fashion choices into their brand strategies helps the business move toward eco-conscious clothing initiatives that are sustainable and environmentally loving.
Mission Statement – “To develop premium lifestyle products that allow you to look and feel good, regardless of what life throws at you.”
L’Couture sources its fabrics and materials carefully and sustainably from Portugal and Thailand, through OEKO-TEX Factories (Sustainable Textile and Leather Production – STeP). Bearing ‘Comfort’ and ‘Functionality’ in mind, L’Couture manufactures and designs its clothing to produce ‘Un-matched’ and ‘Perfect Fit’.
 “High-Quality, Vibrant Workout-Sets.” – HAUTELIVING.
L’OFFICIEL – “L’Couture pieces are a perfect fusion of style and functionality.”
Although her business was initially taking form, the COVID-19 Pandemic that soon hit the year-end of 2019 and full-blown in 2020, prompted many people isolated at home to take up a fitness-conscious regimen and routine to just preoccupy themselves and/or to stay fit. This economic boost in a usually rather low and difficult time in the world, helped L’Couture and Lyndsay Doran in increasing their sales and profits. L’Couture has been recognized for its sustainable lifestyle fashion choices and has been featured in Grazia, The Modern East, a&e, Mojeh, Harper’s Bazaar, Emirates Woman, and The Cosmopolitan. L’Couture by Lyndsay Doran is all set to open new stores this year across the UAE as well as in the UK.

The Beginning of a Story ♡
The day was November 2021 when my mother pulled me back to my dream. Ok that being a cabin crew was never my plan A or B or C… it was neither my plan, first of all.
I used to hate aviation since my mother is also a cabin crew when was never at home. As a child, I used to see aviation as a truly villain, but me and all the cabin crew had a common dream: know the world. I even tried to achieve it walking another road, starting the law school, but I was unhappy and lost. So, the pandemic days…
My mother was on the balcony’s table when she said: “why don’t you apply to Emirates and become cabin crew?”. For a moment, I stopped and thought: “why not?”. As I said, it wasn’t even a plan, but I was not that little girl anymore who blamed aviation for everything. That moment was the moment I realized that I was lost all this time, and just now I was back home.
Home… that’s what aviation means to me. Just like all the kids who hate their home, but grow up.
On that day, I sat at my bedroom table and started to search about the career of Cabin Crew. And the more I read, more I was enchanted with the profession and realized that I was blind all this time. The Instagram showed me the airplanes and the flight attendants. But I was still a little bit worried, since I felt the same feeling before when I tried to apply to Navy and started my Law School. So I closed my eyes and said out loud to God that, if it was my destiny, to never pull out this flame inside of me. And He kept his promise…
Because of the COVID-19, I couldn’t keep the university and neither the internship, so I knew I had to look for some job. I tried first in a drugstore, where I stayed only for 3 days. Then, my mother’s friend tried to help me offering me a job at her friend’s Law Firm. After my first month, I found a paper on my things about a Flight Attendant Course, and again, my mother said “why don’t you try?”. That was funny because it was on a Friday and the class started on the past Saturday, so it was very quickly. And just like I wasn’t afraid about nothing, I took the bus and went to start a new chapter in my life. In my head, that would be good because, while I was preparing to Emirates, I would have opportunities in my country with the Brazilian Airlines, that asked the course, but the time showed me more than I was looking for. During the Course, I learned more about the profession’s history and also what is the profession of Flight Attendant. But that wasn’t all… I also fell in love with the airplanes and how it works. I was delighted about what was the aviation.
The funniest thing was that when I was a child, my favorite movie was “View From The Top”, that talks about a woman who had a dream to know the world and fell in love with aviation. After all, I just realized that my destiny was aviation all this time. Since my mother is a Flight Attendant and my father a Airline Captain, I lived so many moments with aviation just like traveling to somewhere, knowing the crew and the cockpit, seeing a takeoff at real and enjoying the way to the airport everytime I had a chance to join, don’t matter if it was on a National or International one.
During my course, I had the chance to apply to Emirates. On August 28th, 2022, I did my Screening Day that was applied by Flight Right and got a positive response. I remember that I felt ready to pack my bags and move to Dubai, because I was so confident that the second stage would be better. Every airplane passing by was a tear rolling down on my face, and I knew more than anything that it was my destiny. But when the day came, and the second stage started, I got my “No” and my world has collapsed. The feeling I felt that moment was like taking my heart out of my chest and crashing it with hands.
But God never let me give up. After that day I was taking a shower and looked through the window, so I closed my eyes and asked for a sign if that was really meant to be mine. Almost instantly my cousin screamed: “look! An airplane!”. I started to cry while I was listening the sound of the airplane, and told myself that I would never doubt again.
On January 5th, 2023, I took a bus that took me to Sao Paulo to apply again to Emirates Assessment Day, but not that confident anymore. Again, I had a “no” response and went back home, but this time, with a smile on my face. I knew that it was not my fault, so all I had to do was keep studying and improving my CV, so in the right moment, they would choose me too.
A week before I applied to Etihad, that was all an online application. Also, I applied to Airport Auxiliary in my hometown airport, at the same airline my mother started as cabin crew. That was one of the most incredible and unreal moments of my life. Plus I received an offer to work as English Teacher, and that was so unreal then everything. Thanks to this, I lived so memorable moments that I would pay to live them again, and I don’t know why but, different from what I imagined, that was far from being the best thing ever.
The day was July 20th, 2023, when I received the positive response from Etihad Airways and started my journey as Etihad Cabin Crew.

Europe’s best airlines revealed at ‘aviation’s Oscars’
Tumblr media
What’s the number one quality you look for in an airline? After a chaotic summer at Europe’s airports, punctuality is probably up there.
But there’s much more that goes into a good experience in the skies. Now with seven years at the top of the league table, Qatar Airlines appears to have the winning formula according to its passengers.
The Gulf state’s national carrier was voted the ‘World’s Best Airline’ at the 2022 World Airline Awards last Friday. Known as ‘the Oscars of the aviation industry’, it is run by UK-based consultancy Skytrax, with all awards based on a global customer satisfaction survey.
“Qatar Airways was the largest airline to have flown consistently throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with their network never falling below 30 destinations, and that determination has clearly been well recognised by customers with this award,” says Edward Plaisted of Skytrax.
The airline’s boss, Akbar Al Baker, gave the credit to its employees, whose “continued dedication and drive is to ensure our passengers have the best experience possible when they fly with Qatar Airways.”
Like any airline, Qatar doesn’t have a spotless reputation however. Its record on gender equality has frequently made headlines, especially concerning the carrier’s predominantly female crew.
Until recently, women could be fired if they became pregnant. In 2018, Al Baker suggested that a woman would not be able to do his long-held job as chief executive. And in 2020, several passengers were forced to undergo invasive gynaecological examinations at Doha Airport.
What is the best airline in Europe?
European airlines didn’t dominate in the global rankings with just a handful coming in the overall top 10.
Singapore Airlines came second in the World’s Top 20 Airlines – and also scooped the World’s Best Cabin Staff award.
UAE flag carrier Emirates landed third, followed by Japan’s ANA All Nippon Airways in fourth, and Australia’s Qantas Airways in fifth place. More than 350 airlines were included in the survey results.
The top-rated European carrier was Turkish Airlines with satisfied customers putting it in seventh position. This is despite the airline cancelling the most flights in at one point this summer, according to analysis by travel data firm Mabrian.
Air France, Swiss International Air Lines, British Airways, Lufthansa and KLM made the top 20 too, and British Airways was the winner of the Best Airline Staff Service in Europe.
The national airline of Latvia also triumphed at the awards. AirBaltic won the Best Airline in Eastern Europe for the first time, as well as the Most Improved Airline in Europe and the Best Airline Staff in Eastern Europe.

These Cabin Crew Uniforms Look Like They Came Straight Off the Runway
Tumblr media
There was once a point in our life that we dreamed of being able to travel frequently. Flight attendants are the ones realizing everyone’s dream, traveling everywhere from east to west. While flight attendants are required to look out for their passengers, they’re also required to look good while doing the job.
Over the years airlines have collaborated with different high-end designers to create pieces that would best fit with their image. Take a look at some of the standout cabin crew uniforms that would make you do a double take while they strut the aisle with style.
  Singapore Airlines
The Singapore Girls have been donning their iconic sarong kebaya-inspired uniform since 1968 and hasn’t changed since. The uniform was designed by legendary haute couture designer Pierre Balmain, who upgraded the traditional ensemble to a more chic and modern piece. The whole Singapore Girl look is so iconic that a wax figure was created in honor of the airline’s famed cabin crews.
  Hainan Airlines
The Chinese airline upped the cabin crew uniform ante when they unveiled their haute couture-inspired uniform in 2017. The airline launched its new set of uniforms at the Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week and was designed by Laurence Xu. The design shows the fusion of East and West, combining the aesthetic of a cheongsam, a traditional Chinese dress, and a Western-inspired double breasted suit.
  Emirates
One of the most iconic uniforms that we see up in the air, the cabin crews of Emirates has been wearing their quintessential uniform since 1997. Uniform manufacturer Simon Jersey gave the airline’s uniform a slight makeover, but their signature red hat, cream scarf and beige suit still remains.
  Air France
Air France first recruited air hostesses in 1946, and ever since the airline has collaborated with different designers and fashion brands for their uniforms. The airline adapted fashion fads over the decades, seeking fashion houses such as Balenciaga, Carven, and Christian Dior, all of which brought haute couture in the airline’s cabin crew uniform. Their current set of uniforms is designed by French fashion designer Christian Lacroix.
  Etihad Airways
The UAE-based airline launched their new set of cabin crew uniforms in the most fashionable way: a runway show. Milan based haute couturier Ettore Bilotta previously designed the airline’s cabin crew uniforms, but in 2014 the designer upgraded the airline’s sleek uniforms into a more runway-friendly look. To make it even more fashionable, the airline commissioned New York-based photographer Norman Jean Roy to capture editorial-like photos of the airline’s new uniforms set in Abu Dhabi’s picturesque Liwa desert.

EMIRATES RUNNING HUGE RECRUITMENT EVENTS ACROSS IRELAND FOR TAX-FREE JOBS
~CXL~
After multiple successful recruitment events held earlier this year around Ireland, Emirates is returning to hire more Irish staff for their tax-free roles.
According to its website, Emirates is returning to Ireland to run four separate recruitment events all over the country to find people to join its multinational cabin crew.
The Dubai-based airline kicks off its Irish tour with its first event in Cork’s International Airport Hotel this Saturday, June 29 at 9am.
But not to fear, they’ll be making stops in three other Irish cities too.
On July 13, they will set up shop at the Maldron Hotel at Dublin Airport from 9am.
Waterford is the next stop on July 16, however, a location is yet to be confirmed.
And finally, Emirates will finish its recruitment tour in Limerick on July 27 in the Absolute Hotel on Sir Harry’s Mall to fill any remaining spots.
The airline is looking for both men and women to fill its open positions which are a direct result of the continued growth of the company.
The only requirements are that all applicants must be at least 21-years-old and have an arm reach of 212cm when standing on their tiptoes.
We always have a fantastic response at our recruitment drives in Ireland so we’re looking forward to meeting more interested applicants,’ says Country Manager for Emirates in Ireland, Enda Corneille.
‘I encourage anyone who is looking for a rewarding and progressive career to make the most of this opportunity.
We ask that candidates are prepared to spend the full day at the venue if required,’ he added.
For the lucky recruits, they will enjoy staff incentives, tax-free income, free accommodation in Dubai, free transport to and from work, medical and dental cover, and shopping and leisure discounts in Dubai.
