Family Charms
In the city of New Capenna on the plane of the same name (though it wasn’t always named that way), five crime families run every operation. Each of these families was run by a part-demon head and has a symbol that functions as a taglock.
The Obscura (WUB) are the detectives...that use the information they gain to extort people. Their leader is the sphinx demon Raffine. The Obscura symbol is a hand, keyhole, and dagger.
The Maestros (UBR) are the art aficionados and museum keepers...who also think murder is art. Their leader was the vampire demon Xander, who has since been murdered and passed leadership to Anhelo, his vampire second-in-command. The Maestros symbol is a chalice and two crossed knives.
The Riveteers (BRG) are the construction and maintenance crews...who may have “accidents” on the job. Their leader is the dragon demon Ziatora. The Riveteers symbol is a hammer and an anvil.
The Cabaretti (RGW) are the entertainment, the druids, and the celebrities...who aren’t above extortion and keeping politicians in their pockets. Their leader is the leonin demon Jetmir, whose second-in-command is his adopted elf daughter Jinnie Fay. It’s unclear if Jetmir survived in canon as of writing this. The Cabaretti symbol is a leonin mask.
The Brokers (GWU) are a law firm...that make demonic contracts. Their leader is the aven demon Falco Spara. The Brokers symbol is a quill in an inkwell mixed with a bird's head/wings and a shield.
For these charm spells, you will need the following:
Three (3) energy sources, each aligning to one of the three colors of each family.
A symbol of the family: a picture of their symbols, pictures of their founders/heads, or imagery of the charm cards.
A chant written for the family in question (some examples included here).
In order to cast any of these, hold the first energy source for the family and say the first line of the chant. Then hold the second one and say the second line. Finally, hold the third one and say the third line. Close out the spell as you normally would.
Obscura Charm
This spell is to reclaim your energy from a spell cast for someone else, counter a spell sent against you, and then return someone’s bane to them.
Selenite, sodalite, and obsidian will be the White, Blue, and Black sources for this spell (respectively).
By the Obscura, I recall my old energy. By Raffine’s guidance, I protect myself from your influence. By the power of the sphinx, I return your harm.
Maestros Charm
This spell is to determine what’s coming at you, drain an enemy’s energy, and burn them for trying to hurt you.
Amethyst, obsidian, and jasper will be the Blue, Black, and Red sources for this spell (respectively).
By the Maestros, I will see what’s coming. By Xander’s gifts, I will drain the energy of what tries to hurt me. By the power of the vampire, I burn those in my way.
Riveteers Charm
This spell is to fuck someone up, get ahead of them, and keep them from getting ahead of you.
Obsidian, bloodstone, and malachite will be the Black, Red, and Green sources for this spell (respectively).
By the Riveteers, fuck you and what’s yours. By Ziatora’s flames, I will get ahead. By the power of the dragon, you will be blocked.
Cabaretti Charm
This spell is to strengthen your allies, be they other magical practitioners, servitors, thoughtforms, spirits, or whatever, as well as gathering more aid to your side.
Jasper, bloodstone, and selenite will be the Red, Green, and White sources for this spell (respectively).
By the Cabaretti, my allies and I burn you. By Jetmir’s influence, I strengthen my allies. By the power of the leonin, I summon aid to my side.
Brokers Charm
This spell is to empower yourself, break someone’s influence over you, and figure out your next step.
Bloodstone, white onyx, and amethyst will be the Green, White, and Blue sources for this spell (respectively).
By the Brokers, I strengthen myself. By Falco Spara’s rulings, I destroy your enchantment. By the power of the aven, I find guidance and resources.
Post Notes
Other variations of this spell can be crafted through what the charms can do. You can even narrow down the spell to each single effect that the charms are capable of in-game.
Jinnie Fay or Anhelo could be invoked in place of Jetmir or Xander (respectively). If invoking Jinnie Fay in place of Jetmir, replace the third line with “By the power of the elf, I summon aid to my side.”
When doing one of the charms to see what’s coming at you, make sure to follow up the casting with a divination session using a method of your choice.

If/When: 3-color charms cycle that has CD, DE, and EC effect. (P.S. When I saw Cabaretti Charm in preview, I thought it was such a cycle.)
If. The ability to do that across an entire cycle, and have all the cards play well, is a a longshot.

Notable Cards of: Streets of New Capenna Part 2/2
#11: The Charm Cycle
Pretty much every one of the Charms in New Capenna is decent aside from perhaps Cabaretti Charm. My favorites are Riveteer, Maestros, and Obscura. Riveteer Charm is just straight gas that can amass a lot of value, particularly with the impulse draw mode being used at an opponent’s end step. Maestros Charm is another card interesting in Arclight Phoenix decks since the first mode can allow the card to dump any Phoenixes you find into the yard and draw a card. Obscura Charm is notable for being able to resurrect a few notable permanents at instant speed, such as Kaito, little Teferi, and another card I’ll mention later.
#12: Endless Detour
This can be a potentially vile card in a hard Control deck. If you pack at least two of these in a deck, you can use the first one to respond to a threat, and then use the second one to put the first one back on top of your library. And then do that again. And again. This lets a Control deck never draw out, which can be a miserable win condition as seen when big Teferi was in Standard.
#13: Workshop Warchief
Thragtusk’s communist cousin. There’s not much to say here. Its Thragtusk with upside aside from the lack of blink synergies and a little less life gain… and I guess it requires an extra green mana to cast. Thragtusk is still a decent Magic card in slower games, and this is probably also good.
#14: Obscura Interceptor
There’s actually a surprising amount of tempo to be had with this creature. Its individual parts are underwhelming, but all combined together can make for a rather decent tempo play while also generating a 4/2 lifelink body at instant speed. Its probably not fast enough for older formats, but is quite a good card in slower formats and EDH.
#15: Riveteers Ascendancy
This a work horse of a card in sacrifice decks. Lots of restrictions, but it can give its user a ton of value, particularly in EDH where there are more turns in one go around. Combine this with a sac outlet, and then have the bottom of your chain be something like a Doomed Necromancer. This can let a deck constantly cycle between a selection of cards over the turn cycle and generate tons of value. I think all but the most Spike-y of sacrifice decks want this in EDH, and I could even see it one day working in Standard or Pioneer… hell, maybe even Modern.
#16: Maestros Ascendancy
Kess but without legs and an added cost. This can be pretty easy to build around since cards like Young Pyromancer automatically generate sac fodder in these colors. The ability to cast spells again from the graveyard has always been valuable. This is no exception. It not being a creature also means it can recur board wipes without hitting itself.
#17: Void Rend
Abrupt Decay but it can hit anything and is in better colors to be pitched to free spells like FoW, FoN, and Solitude. Cards like Murktide Regent require decks in any format to be able to hit creatures of any mana value, and this can’t be stopped aside from spells that bounce spells. A very valuable tool to have in any Esper deck’s arsenal.
#18: Raffine, Scheming Seer
And finally, Raffine! Am I biased? Maybe. But this is a valuable and potent attacker that can generate a ton of “card movement” across zones while also becoming a very large threat. The ward cost also means free spells cannot hit this for free. It can just be very hard for an opponent to cleanly answer Raffine, and the longer they wait the more absurd value she generates.
Honorable Mentions:
- Giada, Font of Hope
- Ledger Shredder
- Tenacious Underdog
- Ognis, the Dragon’s Lash
- Sanctuary Warden

Streets of New Capenna Part 1
Today officially kicks off spoiler season for Streets of New Capenna and I have to say it looks like an interesting set. I like the whole 1920s Prohibition-era U.S.A. feel to go with the whole theme of the set being crime families. Elspeth looks like she was ripped straight from that era in her regular frame Planeswalker card. Supposedly this plane is her home plane and except for New Capenna it’s completely dead (according to Vivien Reid).
And what would this set be without Ob Nixilis who appeared on the teaser art? Supposedly his goal is to take over New Capenna by taking out all five families but knowing Wizards and the way they write their stories he won’t succeed.
With the last set having a Phyrexian praetor a lot of people aren’t surprised that Urabrask is in this set. According to the wiki Tezzeret makes an alliance with him in an attempt to double cross Elesh Norn and sends him to New Capenna to find Elspeth because her presence on New Phyrexia could turn the tides in favor of the Mirrans. If that’s not a hint at a return to New Phyrexia I don’t know what is.
Now onto the mechanics. Casualty is a perfect mechanic for Grixis colors. This is another reason I’m disappointed that Grixis didn’t go to the family of mages because it’s perfect for them. I guess with the Maestros being the family of assassins a mechanic like this fits them since it sacrifices creatures to copy spells.
We got a sneak peek of connive when all five family leaders were spoiled but now that we’ve seen some of the other mechanics it looks like an interesting one.
For the Riveteers I like this one. It reminds me of Dash from Fate Reforged but with the downside of the creature being destroyed at the end of the turn. I can’t wait to see what other cards have this mechanic.
For the Cabaretti (the party family) a mechanic like Alliance suits them. It works good in token decks which I assume this set will have a lot of cards that make them, especially Cabaretti cards. On a side note I love the flavor text on Devilish Valet.
And finally the Brokers mechanic. I’m not sure if this is it or if there’s another one but shield counters are an interesting concept. The only downside I can see is that you don’t have a choice on whether or not you can remove it so if a creature with more than one toughness takes even one point of damage it triggers causing you to lose the counter. From today’s previews the Brokers rely on different kinds of counters so this fits right in.
And finally this one. This card reminds me of a card in Yugioh caller Dark Brine that negates a spell or trap but let’s your opponent draw a card. It used to see a lot of play but as the meta became more combo-focused it stopped being played because letting your opponent draw a card started to become too risky. I doubt this will see a lot of competitive play because even though it has a mana value of one giving your opponent two treasure tokens is too much of a downside.
I can’t wait to see more of this set. So far the only cards I have my eyes on are the Maestros tri-land, Maestros Charm, and Urabrask for my Phyrexian praetor collection.

To be honest Marcel would find the city of New Capenna, with it towering skyscrapers cutting up the sky and nature confined to small pots of land, rather stifling. Though no where near as suffocating as Ravinca. It is also dose not help that it is hinted that the land outside the city is a phyrexian wasteland.
The gardens of the Cabaretti are a wonderful repaved from the claustrophobia Marcel feels being so wall it though. It in one of these quite gardens he would be given the moniker Wall Flower by a rather charming jewel thief, who took a shine to Marcel and his Mox.
Though Marcel had not come to New Capenna from the rambunctious party throwers, no he was here for the Maestros. The twisted reflection of the aristocracy of his home plane, or perhaps a vision into what they would become if things stayed the same. He found it rather easy to charm the blue bloods what attending their art galas, after all he had a lot of experience with though that keep up a veneer of artistic refinement to hide their true nature.
And this is what got him in trouble.
You seem Marcel had been operating as a back ally doctor while on the plane. A very don’t ask don’t tell operation what would see him patching up Riveteer prize fighter and Obscura snoops in the same night. He was very good at what he did and quickly earned the nickname Doc White for the well tailored white suits he wore that never seemed to get a drop of blood on them.
So when the other families noticed this powerful healer cozying up the the Maestros, they let their displeasure be know.
So Marcel skipped town, so to speak.
I have this idea for Marcel involving New Capenna... Of young men with more ambition then brains bleeding out on the floor of his hotel room. The taste of halo bubbling across his lips, as a feline with a smooth smile and sticky fingers gently calls him wall flower. Of quickly finding him in over his head trying to charm his way among the old money that reminds him far to much of home. Ending with the good Doctor White vanishing into the night like so many before him.
Ooo sounds like a tale of romance, and intrigue, and murder! :O It’s the perfect setting for it! How do you think Marcel would like the more modern world of New Capenna? Especially now that you are focusing more on his natural connections and there is a lot less nature there?
