Good Dog, Bad Dog (Black Sheep au)

Here's some angst and hurt/comfort for your Sunday (or whatever day you find this) from the black sheep au. Thank you to @ca44en for giving me some ideas for this AU! Also there's some background Amandawn too, as a treat

Anetra knew she had one main job on the farm, and it was to protect others at all costs. She had her humans to protect and the other animals. It’s what good dogs do; they have to earn their keep.

She never knew that protection meant for her until she saw a black sheep wandering off to the neighbor’s house on a late summer day.

She spotted Mirage far outside the closed gate, walking to the neighbor’s dairy cows on the other side of the road. Mirage had made friends with two cows through the fence earlier that year. Anetra has always caught the sheep and herded her back to the pasture.

When she saw the black sheep walking down the path towards the road, Anetra sprang into action. She snuck underneath the gate of the closed pasture and made a beeline across the front lawn of the farmhouse,

Mirage was getting closer and closer to the road, and Anetra’s worry grew. She gave a few loud barks to the sheep, which went ignored.

Anetra hated having to bark. Her old owner told her she was a bad dog when she barked. She tried her best not to be a bad dog anymore.

Bad dogs got their collars taken away and dumped off in the woods far from home. She felt lucky enough to get a second chance to be a good dog again.

Mirage was halfway across the road when Anetra finally caught up to her. She stood in front of the sheep, blocking her path. Mirage tried to dodge her and go in a different direction, but Anetra was there to stop her every move.

Eventually, Mirage gave up on going to the other side of the road and turned around to go back to the farm. Anetra watched her walk up the path toward the pasture. Soon, one of the farmhands will notice and lead her back inside.

As Anetra watched the sheep follow the path up to the pasture gate, she barely registered the sound of a motor getting closer. She started to cross the road and got to about a foot away from the shoulder of the road when a flash of a white pick-up truck appeared in the corner of her vision.

Without any notice, Anetra felt a horrific shooting pain coming from her back leg as she lay on the ground. She didn’t even feel the truck knocking her just off the road until she tried to get back up, but the shock and the pain prevented her from moving.

Good dogs were more careful to watch the road for any cars. Good dogs didn’t get hurt so they could continue working and protecting the property.

She messed up her chance to be a good dog again. She can’t protect everyone on the farm anymore.

She could hear the voice of her old owner, “Bad dog, getting into the road. You know better than that. You getting hurt will cost us more than you’re worth.”

Anetra hoped Sasha wouldn’t say the same thing.

Anetra tried to push the pain away and ignore it as she sat up, only being able to lift her head off the ground. She was just off the road now, hearing footsteps and concerned voices nearing where she lay.

“Asshole didn’t even slow down.” said a female voice coming closer.

“I got his plate number for later, in case we need to make a police report.” said another feminine voice.

Two women kneeled on either side of Anetra. The blonde looked at her injury as the redhead looked at her collar.

“I think this is the Colby’s dog.” The blonde said, then looked at the other woman. “Dawn, I think you should go get Sasha. This looks pretty bad.”

Anetra tried to sit up again to get a better view of the woman, but her muscles felt like they were on fire. She somehow managed to push through the pain and was able to sit with her head up, still in a lying position. She let out a few pained whines as she adjusted into a better position.

“If that little black sheep didn’t start freaking out, we wouldn’t have even known you were out here.” the woman told her as she gently scratched her ears. “You didn’t even make a noise when you got hit. You aren’t much of a barker, huh?”

She didn’t even notice that Mirage had seen her get hurt. She barely recognized anything around her when she was registering what happened after the truck hit her.

Anetra felt thankful for Mirage getting the neighbor’s attention, even if she may have tried to cross the road again.

The woman sat by Anetra until Dawn returned with Sasha and Kerri following her. She tried avoiding any eye contact with her owners as they got closer. Anetra felt instant worry that Sasha would punish her for not being more careful.

“Oh, my…” she heard Sasha say as she sat next to her. “What happened, sweet girl?” she said with sweetness in her voice, gently stroking her head.

Anetra looked at Sasha, seeing her green eyes trying to keep the tears at bay. She was surprised that Sasha wasn’t angry with her right now. She was the one that got hurt and couldn’t work anymore, why was her owner being nice?

She was a bad dog, she didn’t deserve her human’s kindness.

“Her leg is looking bad, I’m going to call the vet,” Kerri said as she kneeled over Anetra’s back end, carefully looking at her injury. “I don’t even think she can walk on it, or even get in the car.” she pointed out with concern before taking out her cell phone and stepping away.

As they waited, Sasha gently stroked Anetra’s fur as she cooed kind words softly to the dog. It didn’t help the pain, but it did make Anetra feel calmer now that someone familiar was nearby,

“Raja said she can open the office in a few minutes since it’s an emergency,” Kerri said as she started walking back. “Do you think we can get her in the car?” she asked.

Sasha looked at the blonde woman, “Do you think you can help us out, Amanda? You and Dawn are more used to transporting animals than we are.”

“Of course, let’s see if she can stand up,” Amanda said as she and the other women stepped back, giving Anetra room to try standing.

It was a slow and painful process of getting back on her feet. She put most of her weight on her good leg as she tried to regain her balance on three legs.

“What a good girl.” Sasha smiled, but her eyes still had some worry. “C’mon, I know you can do it.” She encouraged Anetra as she slowly led her to Kerri’s small SUV.

Anetra started walking, slow and steady. Amanda and Dawn followed behind her, but her eyes stayed on Sasha. Sasha gave her gentle, encouraging words as she walked backward in front of her. Sasha told her to go slow and take her time, which was exactly what she did.

Eventually, she got to the open door of the backseat. Amanda carefully got her arms around Anetra, minding the broken leg. She let out a whine when the pain got too much but relaxed when she got into the car and lay in the backseat. Her leg felt like it was throbbing in pain now.

Kerri drove carefully down the road as Sasha sat with her in the backseat, Anetra’s head in her lap. The smooth drive and exhaustion caught up to her, and Anetra was slowly lolled to sleep.

She listened to Sasha and Kerri talk as her eyelids grew heavier and heavier.

“I hate seeing her in pain like this. Maybe if I kept a better eye on her-”

“Mom, it’s not your fault. She was just doing her job of getting the sheep out of the road.”

She heard a pause before Sasha spoke again, “I just hope she’s going to be okay.”

“She will be, she’s a pretty strong-willed dog.”

The last thing Anetra saw before falling asleep was Kerri reaching behind with an open hand, squeezing Sasha’s hand in comfort.

Anetra woke up feeling very drowsy, in an unfamiliar metal kennel with a closed cage door. She saw a woman with dark hair with blonde highlights facing the other direction, writing something on a clipboard.

She sat up, but the leg that she remembered was broken felt bigger and blocky. Anetra looked to see a hard cast that reached the top of her thigh, wrapped in bright red tape.

She watched a tall woman walk into the room with long silver hair. She wore a crisp white coat, and Anetra remembered her as the lady who jabbed her with a bunch of needles last year in an unfamiliar building away from the farm.

But the woman also gave her a peanut butter-flavored Milkbone right after, so this woman wasn’t all bad.

Anetra figured that this was the Raja lady that Kerri called earlier.

“Looks like Colby’s dog is ready to go, Manila,” Raja said as she looked over her shoulder at the paper. “Got her discharge papers ready?” she asked.

“Just about,” Manila answered, taking the papers off the clipboard, “I’ll go get them signed.” before she left the room.

Raja kneeled to see if Anetra was awake and opened the cage door. “You were a great patient, but I bet you’re ready to get back home,” she said as Anetra took the open door to leave the kennel. Her back leg felt tender, but the pain wasn’t nearly as bad as she remembered.

The vet put her on a slip-lead and walked her into a lobby area, with Sasha and Kerri sitting in hard plastic chairs. They both looked relieved once they saw Anetra walk towards them.

Sasha put Anetra’s leash on her collar in place of the slip lead and spoke to the veterinarian, “Thank you so much again. “ Sasha said as she and Kerri led her outside to the car.

“This dog is going to hate being stuck inside for the next six weeks,” Kerri said as Sasha let Anetra onto the nearby grass.

Sasha gave an amused look to Anetra before looking back to her daughter, “If she gets bored, she can always try to herd Marcia in the house until she can get back to work.”

Current obsession: clonesclonesclonesclones forever. I haven't had a special interest/hyperfixation this deep since I was like 12-14 so like this is one of the most important things in my life tbh. Specifically like thinking about how their culture would work, and their solidarity, internal conflicts, shared trauma and how that would relate to those things. Their ideas about personal and cultural identity and how that would vary individually. Things like how their upbringing must have felt, how that affected them and who they became later in life, the things they're taught vs what they truly come to believe once they're out on the field, the psychological effects of O66 on the clones who survived and the devastating impact it must have had- Bro stop me or I'll keep going forever like. I'm in deep and tbh? I wouldn't change it for the world.

Do you believe in life outside of Earth: Oh absolutely. There’s all these galaxies with planets there’s definitely one with some living organisms. Blobs just vibing or something. Idk it makes the universe feel less empty somehow like a few galaxies away some alien is probably eating dinner or something.

What is your favourite planet: I'd have to say Saturn for reasons that are slightly embarrassing.

If you had to bring an item with you to space, what item would it be: Some ibuprofen. I feel like I'd need it.

What is your favourite celestial body: I find nebulae so gorgeous.

Do you believe in life outside of earth: Maybe not life as we understand it on Earth, but it'd be some degree of hubris to think that we're entirely alone in the universe.

What is your favourite piece of space themed media: It's loosely space themed and might be related to my first answer to these questions – Sailor Moon. It's always a good comfort to watch and I've loved it in every iteration that I've consumed. Currently I'm enjoying something that's a bit more space related – 23.5. It's such a cute little Thai drama.

What is the moon phase while you're answering this: It's a new moon tonight <3

What are your big three signs: Pisces Sun, Cancer Moon, Cancer rising.

What do you think of astrology: It's a good deal of fun, but not something I base my life around. It's pretty useful for writing fanfiction though, so in that regard it's great.
