The park in Robin Hood is Bidwell Park in Chico, CA! They even themed the disc golf course after Robin Hood. The valley oak trees are super easy to spot in the film/stills and they're native to the California valleys. I'm sure you'd have fun if you made the trip!
thank you!

Hans Memling
Tommaso di Folco Portinari (1428–1501); Maria Portinari (Maria Maddalena Baroncelli, born 1456)
Oil on wood, ca. 1470
Image at bottom: Hypothetical reconstruction of the portraits of Tommaso and Maria Portinari with Hans Memling, "Virgin and Child," ca. 1470, oil on oak, (National Gallery, London).
A native of Florence, Tommaso Portinari was the branch manager of the Medici bank in Bruges. He probably commissioned these portraits from Memling around the time of his marriage to the fourteen-year-old Maria Baroncelli in 1470. The two panels originally formed a triptych with a central devotional image of the Virgin and Child.

California Botanic Garden, 1500 N College Ave, Claremont, CA 91711
Tumblr media
“California Botanic Garden is the largest garden devoted to California native plants.” The 86 acre garden contains over 6,000 species of native plants, including many rare plants (e.g., one tree only has six left in nature) that are found in very limited areas (e.g., on Catalina Island, Channel Islands, etc.). The garden started on Susanna Bixby Bryant’s estate in Orange County and was known as the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens. The collection moved to the grounds of Claremont College once she passed.
The garden is not highly manicured. Trees that die and fall over are left in the garden. Weeds abound. Some plants don’t look like they’re doing that well. But it is a nice, large garden to stroll in for an hour or two. Most of the paths are covered in asphalt.
There are various areas where you can see many trees (pine, junipers, redwoods, oak, Joshua trees, laurel trees, buckeyes, sycamores), some cacti, and bushes. Also, there’s an outdoor classroom, Tongva village, butterfly garden, ponds, wildflowers (e.g., California poppies), etc. We spotted falcons that are different than the ones we usually see in NELA.
There are various staff buildings and also some outdoor artwork. Many plants had descriptive signs.
General admission is $10 with discounts for seniors, students, and children. There is a small gift shop (kiosk) by the entrance, a nursery that’s open seasonally, events and classes, and free parking. There are only two restrooms and none are by the entrance, so plan accordingly. There is no café but they have picnic tables right by the entrance.

SKELETON ➝ NAVIGATE ➝ BIOGRAPHY
QUICK STATS:
Name: Noah James Leveson Age: Thirty ( 30 )  Birthday: March 8th, 1943  Gender/Ponouns: Cis Man & He/Him/His Height: 6 ft. 1 in.  Occupation: Manager/Supervisor Current Employer: Birch Bay Lodge Past Employers: StillWater Post, Ruby’s Diner, Valley Oak Drive-In, etc. Hometown: Stillwater, CA ( made some trips as a child with his family over to England from where is Mom was from )  Neighborhood: WillowDale Skeleton/Song: One Way Or Another ♪ FaceClaim: Jonah Hauer-King
SUMMARY:
tw: death, parental death
The first born to David & Ava Leveson on March 8th, 1943. David was a StillWater, CA native and a mathematics teacher at the local middle school. He met his wife, Ave, overseas on a study abroad program in England while at college. The two kept in touch and Ava eventually made the choice to move to the States, and she opened up her own clothing boutique store in town. Eventually, they joyfully welcomed two more children into their family.
Shortly after Noah had turned 12, his parents made one of their yearly routine trips on their own to visit Ava’s family in England and his grandfather on his father’s side, Samuel, watched the three children. Receiving tragic news had felt as if their world had come to an unimaginable stop, an accident during Mr. and Mrs. Leveson's vacation had become fatal for all involved. The children had no choice to attend a funeral for their parents and Noah realized he had to step up and be there for his younger siblings as much as he could as his grandfather wasted no time to apply to be their full-time guardian so they had a parental figure around.
As Noah got older and went through school, his jobs around the house to ensure his younger siblings were set in their daily lives only increased to help out his grandfather, which included taking multiple service job positions in local establishments around town. The regular tasks involved his once extraordinary grades rapidly decreasing, and it became apparent as everyone in senior year of high school was ready to go off to college and start their lives, Noah wasn’t going to be able to do so. But it wasn’t too difficult choice for him to accept, as he’d rather his siblings had that chance instead of him anyway.
The years rapidly started to pass, and Noah continued working multiple jobs and took on more chores around the home as his grandfather still helped as much as he could, but was also getting older and developed more health problems. His siblings had started to prepare for their own lives in the world, and he remained. His work ethic paid off as he went in for a manager/supervisor position at Birch Bay Lodge, which he was offered and was relieved to take, as it paid a bit more to help out his grandfather’s growing hospital bills and to try and keep eviction notices on their home from appearing.
He remains working at Birch Bay while his younger siblings are in out of the home at this point, even if would be nice to receive a thanks for them every so often, he knows they’re trying to figure out live for themselves. After all, there had never been any use to even think about what any of his own dreams would be, right? Or will the cracks deep within finally surface?

A collaboration between Paso Roble's Calwise Spirits and Firestone Walker Brewing Company is finally out! Introducing Axe Hole Single Malt Whiskey.
Tumblr media
Press Release
Paso Robles, CA: Calwise Spirits is excited to unveil its latest neighborhood collaboration with Firestone Walker Brewing Company—a special-edition “Axe Hole” Single Malt Whiskey, distilled from a mash of traditional brewing grains and aged for three years in American oak barrels.
Only 100 cases of Axe Hole Single Malt Whiskey ($75) were produced from a total of three barrels. It is available at the Calwise Spirits tasting room in Paso Robles as well as online at CalwiseSpirits.com.
The Axe Hole Single Malt Whiskey comes from an all-barley sour mash fermented by Firestone Walker and distilled by Master Distiller Aaron Bergh at Calwise Spirits, which is located just a mile from the brewery in Paso Robles. In keeping with the requirements of American single malt whiskey, it was aged in all-new American oak barrels prior to blending and bottling. Bergh also held some additional barrels back for a second bottling to come in 2025.
Tumblr media
“A lot of people associate single malts with the peaty character of traditional Scotch, but ours is closer to a bourbon with these vanilla and caramel notes that you get from the charred American oak,” Bergh said. “I love how smooth and unique it turned out, with these beautiful fruit and cola notes that can only come from the sour barley mash provided by Firestone Walker.”
Bergh added, “The brew side often gets overlooked when it comes to distilling, but it’s foundational. It was fun to get out of the way and let the masters of brewing handle that side of things, and its why this whiskey tastes so good.”
Tumblr media
This is the second collaborative spirit created by Calwise Spirits and Firestone Walker, following the limited release of “Old Tom” gin in 2022.
“These collaborations are another way for us to deepen our artisanal roots and share what we do with a friend and neighbor,” said Nick Firestone. “We’ve been working with spirits barrels for nearly 20 years to create our barrel-aged strong ales, and we see this as an extension of that tradition.”
# # #
Master distiller Aaron Bergh was destined for this adventure. During Prohibition, the Feds shut down his family’s moonshining operation—but not for very long. A century later, the law came knocking again, because the college authorities didn’t appreciate Aaron making hooch in his dorm. Calwise Spirits is Aaron’s ode to this renegade heritage, and a nod to his homeland of coastal California. Now established as one of the youngest master distillers in the world, he has created a line of premium spirits that embody the essence of the Golden State, infusing them with native ingredients that provide a pure taste of liquid California. Visit CalwiseSpirits.com.
Founded in 1996 by brothers-in-law Adam Firestone and David Walker, Firestone Walker is a second-generation, family-led brewery based on California’s Central Coast. Helmed by highly decorated Brewmaster Matt Brynildson, Firestone Walker's main brewery in Paso Robles produces a diverse portfolio including 805, California's #1 craft beer brand; Mind Haze, a top 5 national hazy IPA; and Cali Squeeze, one of the nation's fastest-growing beer brands. The Firestone brand family also includes iconic beers such as DBA, Union Jack, and Pivo Pils, as well as the storied Vintage Series of barrel-aged strong ales led by Parabola. As a California beer company, Firestone Walker also has two additional locations: the Barrelworks wild ale cellar in Santa Barbara County and the Propagator R&D brewhouse in Venice. Firestone Walker was recently named “Best American Brewery of the Decade” by Paste Magazine. More at 805beer.com and FirestoneWalker.com

Wow! Someone said it! I think a fair amount, actually, about how even the most hyperlocal native plant gardens don't have the same diversity of plants the actual forests and plains do, because they exclude the "ugly" (or even just marginally-less-showy) plants!
In my neck of the woods (northern CA - think oak woodlands and the southern reaches of the redwood forest ecosystem) there are a lot of un-showy and rarely-propagated plants that seem to dominate in the forest understory, including:
American Trail Plant
Tumblr media
Pacific Sanicle
Tumblr media
and Sweet Cicely
Tumblr media
These aren't big, showy plants, and but they're important members of the ecosystem. That doesn't even get into the many, many small 'weedy' annuals that are often left out even from restoration plantings, due to how easily they get overrun by invasive species. Popcornflower are some of these (there are over 100 species of popcornflower), but there are many more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Little guys also need love.
obvious but hard to realize for some reason: pollinator gardens should include inconspicuous and ugly small plants too
like, there are SO MANY plants that are tiny herbs without conspicuous flowers that are really hard to notice. And the most visually dominant/striking plants aren't actually the only ecologically important things, it would be hard to find an ecosystem with ONLY the showy plants that are intentionally planted in pollinator gardens, in fact maybe some random tiny weed is supporting the most insects
In a natural ecosystem spaces between larger plants are filled in by smaller plants all the way down to the tiniest mosses
It makes sense to include small, "uncharismatic plants" in a pollinator garden because it would be a kind of green mulch that lowers maintenance. The classic wood chip mulch doesn't provide the kind of habitat characteristics that are similar to a meadow
There's so many small details that it's like people can't notice because of the level of smallness. But think of how small many of the bugs are. Even the smallest characteristics of the organic matter on the ground could make it a totally different habitat for them, a leaf from one species vs. another could be like the difference between an abandoned parking lot and a luxury hotel
Also what about moss?? there are specific species of mosses for each tiny variation of habitat. Moss that likes growing on rocks won't grow on soil, moss that likes growing under pine trees won't grow under maple trees, moss that likes the branches of a living tree won't grow on a fallen log. Moss that likes to grow near creeks won't like it near ponds. Etc
