03/06/2022 - Here we Caen.

A 3am start and 122 miles later we arrive at Portsmouth harbour to catch the ferry to Caen. But no trip doesn’t have it story of inconveniences. My father had mentioned about the 3rd Covid jab and that I’ll likely need one… which I assumed I’d didn’t as I’d had 2 already. Cut a long story short 2 security refusals and a panic drive to get a bespoke lateral flow test, we managed to board the ferry after the 3rd attempt.

Surrounded by WW2 willies jeeps driven by enthusiasts wearing officer garments, You can definitely tell it’s the D-Day anniversary week. The ferry trip itself is about 6 hours long, but feels a lot longer with lack of decent entertainment and mediocre food. Luckily I had my work laptop, so i could crack on with outstanding jobs.

We disembark the ferry and head to accommodation located at Golf Omaha Beach just west of Port-en-Bessin-Huppain. Here we had a mooch around the fishing town(s) Port-en-Bessin and Huppain are actually two towns. Interestingly a battle took place here between the 7-8 June June 1944 where Royal marine commandos were tasked to capture the fortified port as part of operation overlord.

As a result the commandos had 136 casualties (46 killed, 70 wounded). We were fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time witnessing a flyby of a Dakota - Douglas C47 which was pretty rad. The ports bars/restaurants were brimmed with WW2 soldiers and officers with GMC and Chevy trucks parked outside.. it was impressive.

We head back to the hotel, consume wheat beer and an artisan 3 course meal. Today wasn’t even the start of the WW2 tour.. the real fun begins tomorrow.

Market Garden is commemorated every year. The airborne landings that had to conquer the bridge at Arnhem during the second world war. Prior to this commemoration there was an exercise with, among other things, air cargo droppings from military cargo planes.

Various air forces took part during the parachute drops on the Ginkelse Heath near Ede. In addition to the Dutch, British, Romanian and German air forces, the Italian air force was also among the participants this year with a C130 Hercules.

This week is the 75th anniversary of the Operation Overlord, the landings at Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944. This particular Douglas C-47 Skytrain (the RAF called them Dakotas, so the names are pretty much interchangeable these days) is probably the most famous and historic aircraft on the warbird air show circuit today. This particular aircraft named "That's All Brother" was flown by Lt. Col. John Donalson, commander of the 438th Troop Carrier Group, as the lead aircraft of an 800-aircraft formation that air dropped the 101st Airborne Division inland from Utah Beach in the middle of the night on 6 June 1944 before the main invasion force landed on the beaches at 0630. "That's All Brother" also flew paradrop missions in Operation Market Garden (invasion of the Netherlands), Operation Anvil/Dragoon (invasion of southern France) as well as resupply drops during the Battle of the Bulge. Sold on the civilian market after the war, it changes hands several times before ending up in a Wisconsin scrapyard where the Basler company planned to rebuild the aircraft into a modern turboprop, unaware of its historical significance. That changed when USAF historians who were researching Lt. Col John Donalson's service history inquired if Basler had come across 42-92847, the serial number of "That's All Brother". Basler was surprised to have actually had the aircraft and a crowdfunding campaign allowed the Commemorative Air Force to buy the aircraft in 2015 and have Basler restore it to its original flying condition and in the markings it wore on D-Day. Few aircraft have impacted as many lives and made as much of a difference around the world as the venerable Douglas DC-3 / C-47. The DC-3 revolutionized air travel and transport when it was introduced in the 1930s and ‘40s. Over the years, many pilots have stated that the only plane that can replace a DC-3 is another DC-3... A claim to which there must be some credence, as even now, at over 70 years old, this type of aircraft is still a workhorse in many remote locations and austere environments around the globe. . . . . This particular airframe used to be operated by Catalina Flying Boats and was a staple in the skies over Long Beach, CA.
